Essay on “Good Manners” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Good manners.

Essay No. 01

If a man is bundle of habits, a gentleman is bundle of manners. As in the Middle  Ages in Europe, the highest glory of man was to call himself a Christian, so in the 21 st Century the highest tribute that can be paid to a man is to call him a gentleman.

A man of good manners is an ornament, but a rude man is a plague to society. Good manners have always been the hallmark of noble soul. Christ washed the feet of his disciples and Lord Krishna washed the feet of his Brahmin guests. George Washington took his hat off to a Negro who saluted him. A friend of his reprimanded him for showing so much regard to a Negro as to take off his hat to him, but he replied that he could not allow a Negro to surpass him in good manners.

Good manners  are indispensable to all. They are a better possession than wealth, beauty or talent. Civility of speech and action is the only thing required of man. A French woman went to the extent of saying that she could not tolerate a breach of good manner,  she could never be put out by insults. Thus civility and courtesy are of greatest value to man. A merchant, who is not courteous, soon loses his customers.  A public officer, who is not courteous, soon becomes unpopular. If a lawyer wants to succeed at the bar, he must be courteous to his clients; if a professor like to be popular, he must deal with his students in a courteous manner.

A man, who does not possess good manners, cannot become well bred man. It is very clearly expressed by Dr. Johnson when he said that the difference between a well bred and an ill bred man is that one immediately attracts one’s liking, the other, one’s aversion. You love the one, he observes, ‘till you find reason to hate him, you hate the other till you find reason to love him.” It is true “manners make a man and want of it, a fellow.”

Good manners lend charm to people. They enhance the mobility of one’s nature and beauty of one’s soul. A man may be very noble, but if he is not mannerly in his conduct and behaviour, he is liable to misunderstood  because he cannot be agreeable to those with whom he comes in contact. On the other hand a treacherous person may pass for a gentleman and win the love and affection of his behavior and is of amicable and sweet disposition. Such is the magical influence of good manners.

Essay No. 2

Good manners make a full man. They are very essential for human civilization. Without good manners, man is like a purse without money though it is very attractive from outside. They are the outcome of good breeding. A person who has been brought up in a good environment must have good manners. We may  call them the flowers of mankind’s garden. Good manners lend colour and grace to life. they make the machine of life run smoothly. Good manners are even more important than the laws of the state.

Good manners are not born with  us; they have to be learnt. If a child were not taught how to behave respectfully, he would grow up rough and rude like a savage. The only difference between a cultured and uncultured man is that the former is educated and knows good manners, while the latter is illiterate and behaves like a rude man in society.

The standards and ideals of good manners differ in different countries, for different nations have different customs. In India it is considered rube if the guests leave their host until he has given them permission to do so, but in England it is considered rude if a host asks his gussets to go after the entertainment. In England, it is considered a mark  of respect to take one’s hat off in a church or in another person’s house but in India good manners require that one should keep one’s headwear on.

What are good manners? The first principle that underlies good manners is that we should   have and show consideration  for the feelings of others. Good manners are the ornament of a gentleman; and a real gentleman will never try to hurt feelings of others. He will not say things that will hurt others; he will not speak in a rude way  to offend them. He will ever try to make everyone feel at his ease. He will care for the convenience, comfort, and happiness of others more than for this own. He will show proper respect for those who are below him, who are his equals, and who are superior to him. He will never try to be disrespectful to anyone.

One should be sympathetic towards the weak and old. Whenever we see an old person in need of a seat while travelling in a train or a bus, we should at once accommodate him. Besides, when we are cycling and   see an old man hesitating on a crossing, we should not call him an old food. Everyone must fall a prey to old age. Therefore an old person must be given a room in the progressive society. We should speak gently. Even if anyone is harsh to us, we should not use harsh words at all costs. We should give up evil thoughts for all time to come. Harshness is a sign of smallness and shallowness.

It makes  a man unpopular.

We should be humble and polite. Politeness costs nothing it can win us many friends. Sweet words are essential for success in life. we should neither brag nor boast. We should be obedient to our parents and teachers. We should be industrious. We should never remain idle at all. We should be ready to help the needy.  We should show courtesy to everyone. We should talk only as much as is necessary. We should do our duty to mankind and to ourselves. We should pray to god and thus make ourselves pure. We should never tell a lie. We should not harm anybody.

Good manners also include table manners and general behaviour. We should not leave the table until others have finished. We must take our turn in queue. We must offer our seat if a lady is standing. We must not damage public property. We should not pluck flowers from public parks. We should not tear pages from library books or magazines.

Good manners are also important when we are in the company of our friends or some other people. When we speak to any one, one should speak clearly, distinctly and sufficiently loud for the person to hear. Good manners are really a form of unselfishness. No selfish person can have  good manners. One who always cares to have one’s own way and seeks own comfort, cannot be called a man of good manners. Good manners are also necessary for success and popularity in life. generally man who is polite, gently and courteous is liked by all. As we see ‘ A rude businessman or shopkeeper soon loses his customer’. Thus we see that Good Manners are an Important part of our good conduct and should be followed while moving in modern society.

Essay No. 3

If a man is a bundle of habits, gentleman is a bundle of manners. As in the Middle ages in Europe the highest glory of man was to call himself a Christian, so in the twentieth century the  highest tribute that could be paid to a man is to call him a gentleman.

A man of good manners is an ornament, but a rude man is a plague to society. Manners are the ornament of an action; as there is a way of speaking a kind word or speaking a kind thing, which greatly enhances their value. Good manners have always been the hall-mark of noble souls. Christ washed the feet of his disciples. Lord Krishna washed the feet of his Brahmin Guest. George Washington took his hat off to a Negro who saluted him. If a professor likes to be popular he must deal with the students in a courteous manner. If a principal wishes to manage his staff satisfactorily he must not forget to be courteous to them. A salesman requires it most to dispose of his goods. A students requires it if he requires to be respected by his class-fellow; and a master needs it if he wants his servants to work for him and hold him in high esteem.

A man who does not possess good manners cannot become a well bred man. Essay No. 04

`Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot.’ Clarence Thomas

The stature we enjoy or the respect we command in society depends on the way we interact with others. Good manners, as the ornaments of our behaviour, help us maintain a balance and order in such interactions and keep them healthy. They also ensure longstanding relationships, by making the people concerned happy and contended with one another.

Good manners should be developed very early in life. In childhood, as we are relatively immature, we behave in a carefree manner, without bothering about the consequences of our actions. We are usually frank in our talk and believe in expressing our opinions as they are. Though such frankness is tolerable, or, to an extent, even desirable in childhood, it cannot be encouraged as we mature. Childish behaviour in mature life will cause all-round embarrassment.

Children should practice good manners as part of their education. They should be taught how not to cause inconvenience to others and to conduct themselves gently and gracefully. Modest behaviour and politeness in conversation are other qualities that children should develop. They should also know how to behave suitably in different situations. They should be able to suppress their instincts where necessary, and to be lively and joyful where such behaviour is called for. In short, the knowledge and practice of good manners should exercise a control over behaviour.

Good manners are not a set of rules that have evolved independently; instead, they are closely related to our general character and tendencies. Even though attitudes, abilities and outlook vary from person to person, all of us share certain basic characteristics. Our emotions and sentiments are generally identical. Just as physical injury causes pain to all of us, so failure and disappointment create feelings of bitterness and frustration in everyone. Good manners are meant to free us of such inconveniences, as well as to serve as simple techniques, with which we may live civilized and trouble-free lives.

Though the aim of good manners is the same the world over, their form and practice may vary. Certain behaviour, that may be considered acceptable in some countries, may not be considered so elsewhere. In today’s world, since we have to deal with people from different regions, we should always be careful that our gestures and manners do not offend others. It is advisable in such situations, to deal with people only after acquiring as much knowledge as possible, about their customs and practices.

Just as good manners ensure healthy human relationships, so they enable individual success. A well-mannered person, who will deal satisfactorily with others, has a better chance of success at work than one who is ill-mannered. Professional success in modern times is achieved more through cooperation and coordination, than through individual perseverance alone. Since success in life is determined by how well we live in society, good manners come in handy to ensure successful lives too.

Though good manners are universally accepted, their effects need not always be satisfactory, because they may be used to deceive or mislead people. Many among us skillfully conceal their evil practices by conducting themselves impeccably in public. Modern crooks, as efficient confidence tricksters, play havoc with the judgment of unsuspecting people. Thus, while appreciating good manners, it is essential that we scratch their surface to ascertain that they are not fake.

Manner refers to a person’s behaviour towards others. Good manners imply polite social behaviour. They play an important role in one’s life. Good manners are the means for developing social relations. Good manners help a person in making good friends. They build one’s reputation as one grows up. The social standing of a person is judged by his manners. Polished and polite manners always create a healthy impact on the society.

Learning good manners should be done early in life. Good manners usually come from parents. It is necessary that parents should themselves be good mannered. They-should teach good manners to their children. Some parents go on meeting the demands of their children. They do not care to teach them good manners. Such children grow up as spoilt individuals lacking manners. Later on, the parents repent on their doing. Therefore, it is necessary that parents guide ‘their children at the right time to the right path. Good manners need to be cultivated. Children with good manners are liked by everybody. Ill-mannered children bring disgrace to their family.

Children also learn good manners froth their teachers, elders and good company. All round development of a child is possible only if it is groomed in good manners. Therefore, public schools lay great emphasis on the cultivation of good manners in their students. Children can learn a lot from good schools and good company. Good mannered people are appreciated everywhere. If a persons is dressed well, it does not mean that he must be possessing good manners. A man without manners is like a beast. Therefore, it is essential to have Good manners.

Courtesy and politeness are the key to good manners. Words and phrases like ‘I am sorry’, ‘Please’, ‘Kindly’, ‘Thank You’,  ‘Sir’, `Madam’, ‘I beg your pardon’, etc. should be often used. They create a healthy impact and a sense of respect on the minds of others. If they are spoken at the right moment in a soft and sweet voice, they work wonders. Even if something negative has to be said, it should be said in such a way that it does not hurt the feelings of others. One should also respond positively to a negative situation.

A man should be tolerant about the opinions of others. One should not raise one’s voice in anger or frustration. One should learn to disagree graceully. Good manners demand respect for the feelings and opinions of other persons. One should not be criticised for having a different view on a particular Subject. Discussions on controversial or sensitive issues lead to nowhere. One should avoid getting involved in such type of discussions.

A person should be very considerate to elders, ladies and the handicapped. One should always offer them a seat while travelling. An old lady or a blind man should always be helped to cross the road safely. While riding a vehicle, one should not blow the horn without need. One should not ridicule the blind and the lame or other handicapped people.

If one talks, one should listen too. It is a token of bad manners if one goes on talking and does not listen to others. One should not interrupt the others while speaking. One should avoid using slang language. Litter and garbage should be thrown only in the dust bin. One should not spit where one is sitting or standing. One should also develop good civic sense. You should cover your mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing.

Good manners enrich the personality of a person. Good manners enhance his value and make him perfect human being.

Good manners, often referred to as etiquette or politeness, are the social niceties that govern our interactions with others. Beyond being mere social conventions, good manners form the bedrock of harmonious human relationships. They are the lubricants that facilitate smooth social interactions and contribute to the overall well-being of society.

Positive Impression

Good manners create a positive first impression. Politeness, respect, and consideration for others immediately set a tone of cordiality and open communication.

Individuals with good manners are often perceived as approachable, trustworthy, and socially adept.

Social Cohesion

Good manners foster social cohesion by promoting a sense of unity and mutual respect among individuals. In a society where people treat each other with courtesy, there is a natural harmony that prevails.

Respectful and considerate behavior forms the foundation of strong and supportive communities.

Effective Communication

Politeness is integral to effective communication. Using “please” and “thank you,” active listening, and avoiding offensive language contribute to clear and respectful dialogue.

Good manners enhance the quality of communication, reducing misunderstandings and fostering healthy relationships.

Professional Success

In the professional realm, good manners are often synonymous with professionalism. Individuals who demonstrate courtesy, punctuality, and proper workplace etiquette are more likely to succeed in their careers.

Colleagues and superiors appreciate those who contribute to a positive and respectful work environment.

Building Trust

Trust is a cornerstone of any healthy relationship. Good manners contribute to the building of trust by creating an atmosphere of reliability, consistency, and sincerity.

Trustworthy individuals are more likely to form meaningful connections and collaborations.

Cultural Sensitivity

Good manners encompass cultural sensitivity and awareness. Understanding and respecting cultural differences in greetings, customs, and communication styles promote inclusivity. Individuals who practice cultural sensitivity contribute to a more tolerant and globally aware society.

Positive Role Modeling

Good manners set an example for others, especially for younger generations. Children learn by observing the behavior of adults, and the display of good manners instills in them a foundation for respectful conduct.

Positive role modeling creates a ripple effect, influencing a broader circle of individuals.

Conflict Resolution

In situations of disagreement or conflict, good manners play a crucial role in facilitating resolution. The ability to express one’s views respectfully and listen empathetically contributes to constructive conflict resolution. Individuals with good manners are more likely to navigate disagreements without causing lasting damage to relationships.

Enhanced Self-Esteem

Practicing good manners contributes to a positive self-image. When individuals are considerate, polite, and respectful, they often experience increased self-esteem and confidence.

Positive self-esteem, in turn, influences how individuals perceive and relate to others.

In a world characterized by diversity and interconnectedness, the importance of good manners cannot be overstated. They serve as the glue that binds individuals together, fostering a sense of unity, respect, and understanding. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, let us recognize the profound impact that good manners can have on our relationships, communities, and the overall fabric of society. 13 Good Manners for Kids to Teach Your Children, Please (Plus 10 Convos to Have RIGHT NOW!)

an essay on good manners for students

Manners for Kids: Having Good Manners is an Incredibly Important Life Skill

It’s hard, but developing your kids’ manners beyond Please & Thank You is critical. And like so many other things, getting kids into the habit of using manners at an early age makes things much easier in the long haul. As my kids age and begin to play away from home and interact with teachers and parents, I’m noticing that they don’t always use eye contact when speaking with others and they often forget to say “excuse me.” I’ve also noticed that simply telling them to practice these good manners isn’t enough. To develop good manners in kids, they need to know why this is important for them. When I explain the why behind certain manners, their eyes light up with comprehension. “Ohhhh,” they say. “Okay!” And they begin to practice it. To start working on good manners for kids, try to model the kinds of behavior you want to see in your children. Trust me—they are paying attention. (Even when you don’t want them to!)

Table of Contents

13 examples of good manners for kids.

Here are what I consider to be the 11 most important manners for kids and my reasons WHY they are important.

While many of these seem like common sense, kids don’t know what’s expected of them until you explain it.

Make your expectations clear, and then model it yourself so they can see these good manners for kids in action.

1) Say please. This shows consideration for others. 2) Say thank you. This demonstrates appreciation and gratitude. 3) Look people in the eye when you speak to them. It’s a good way to show respect for the other person. (**Please note that neurodivergent people struggle with eye contact. It’s smart to teach kids that not all adults will hold eye contact. It’s also wise to observe your child to see if they don’t maintain eye contact because they are simply unable to.) 4) Apologize & forgive when others apologize. It shows empathy and that you are taking responsibility for your actions. 5) Smile & have a good attitude. This makes everything better for yourself and others! 6) Make small talk. This is an important social skill for friendships and, later in life, getting and keeping a job. 7) Listen when others are talking . This shows respect and care for others. 8) Ask questions of others. This shows interest in others’ ideas and feelings. 9) Say excuse me. This shows consideration for others. 10) Look for opportunities to compliment others. This makes others feel good and helps with reciprocal relationships. 11) Share. This shows others you care, and helps you to think of others, makes you appreciate what you have. 12) Wait your turn. This shows consideration and is an important life skill. 13) Treat others the way you want to be treated. Covers all bases!

How to Teach Good Manners for Kids

Reinforcing good manners isn’t hard, but you have to be intentional about it.

Here are several ways to foster good manners for kids.

1) Cement Good Manners by Reading a Book About Manners

RECOMMENDED BOOKS TO HELP WITH MANNERS FOR KIDS Some of my favorites include Please Say Please , Perfect Pigs, Dude, That’s Rude, Are You Quite Polite, The Berenstein Bears Forget Their Manners , and The Thingamajig Book of Manners. Most should be available through your local library, bookstore, or using the linked images below.

Please Say Please

by Margery Cuyler

Reading Age: 3 – 5 years

Perfect Pigs: An Introduction to Manners

by Marc Brown

Reading Age: 2 – 8 years

Dude, That’s Rude!

by Pamela Espeland

Are You Quite Polite

by Alan Katz

The Berenstein Bears Forget Their Manners

by Stan Berenstain

Reading Age: 3 – 7 years

The Thingamajig Book of Manners

by Irene Keller

Reading Age: 6 – 8 years

2) Give Your Kids “The Talk”

Before going to school, the store, a friend’s house, or relatives’ house, emphasize the manners for kids that you expect them to follow. It sounds basic, but a quick reminder about what your expectations are for behavior can go a long way!

3) Create your own list of family manners

Focus on the ones that are important for your own family. State them in a positive way and post them somewhere as a reminder for everyone.

4) Host a manners competition within your household

Have a marble jar or a sticker chart for every family member and give each other points for using good manners. At the end of the week, let the winner pick dessert for the night, choose a fun family activity for the night, have the evening off from chores, or some other incentive of his or her choice.

5) Come up with a fun phrase or sound

Choose a sound to serve as a reminder for one another when manners are forgotten. Some ideas: a buzzer sound, “rewind,” “oops, you forgot something,” or “let’s try that again.”

10 Things You Should Regularly Talk About With Your Kids

Regular communication between parents and kids is not only the key to good manners, but it’s also important for their safety and emotional health.

Over my many years of working as a school social worker and many years as a parent, I have come up with a list of 10 things that all parents really need to talk about with their kids.

Yes, there are probably more than 10 conversations you need to have with your child over the course of their lifetime, but these are the biggies.

Some of these topics will be a one-time thing, but many of them should be more ongoing.

1) Believe in Yourself

Self-confidence might be the most important factor in life success and overall happiness.

And no, I am not talking about the overconfident trash-talking kid (or coworker!) that we all know and love.

Kids need to be able to recognize their talents and positive qualities.

They need your help to discover these things. Take the time to tell them how proud you are. Point out their positive qualities. Tell them that you believe in them. This will help them to explore, take risks, and find success.

Believe in Yourself

2) Appreciate What You Have

Whether you are super wealthy or barely getting by, it is important to remind your kids to be grateful for what they have.

My husband does a great job of pointing out the little things to our kids all the time. Warm pajamas, healthy food, bikes, great teachers, helpful neighbors, the ability to walk: all of these things are so easy to take for granted.

Help your kids notice the little things. Having an attitude of gratitude is contagious and makes you appreciate the little things.

Appreciate What You Have

While this may sound overly simple, it’s a great way to live.

I love wearing my “be nice” shirt. We even have a “be nice” sign on our wall at home.

It matters how you treat others.

Be nice to your siblings, be nice to your friends, and be nice to your parents. If you are nice to others, they will be nice to you. How…nice!

an essay on good manners for students

Regardless of your stance on guns, as soon as your kids start going to other people’s houses, you need to talk to them about gun safety.

Lots of people have guns in their homes and lots of people do not have them locked up. It is hard for children to understand how dangerous guns are. Tell them (more than once!) what they should do if one of their friends wants to show them a gun. Go through different “what if?” situations.

Teach them from a young age to listen to that little voice in their head. Tell them, “if something is telling you this doesn’t seem right, listen.” The same is true for alcohol, cigarettes, and a myriad of other scary and dangerous things.

It is important that your kids know what is acceptable and what is not and that you will always be proud of them for doing the right thing.

Make sure kids know your phone number and address!

5) Your Body Belongs to You

This one really ties in with the previous message about safety. While there are some discussions in elementary school classrooms about personal safety and good touch/bad touch, it’s not enough. Parents need to talk to kids about this, too.

Both boys and girls need to understand that their bodies are private and belong to them.

There is a very small group of people who should be allowed to see children naked.

Funny story: I forgot to mention to my kids that their pediatrician is someone who is on “the list” of approved people. My feisty little daughter just about kicked the poor doctor where it counts during her last well-child visit when he tried to pull her pants down a little bit to feel her belly. Oops!

If you’re wondering what unsafe situations for children look like, read this article about what constitutes abuse and when to report it .

6) Winning is Not That Important

We live in a competitive society. And let’s be honest, everyone likes to win more than they like to lose.

But winning isn’t the only point of competition. It breaks my heart to see kids in my son’s little league division (ages 9 and 10) already smashing bats on the ground, chucking gloves, and crying over a strikeout or a loss.

Allow your kids to lose at games and competitions (yes, I know that sounds mean) and teach them how to be a good sport.

Praise hard work, effort, and not throwing a fit when they lose.

Oh, and be a good example yourself!

7) Stand up for What You Know is Right

Teach your child to listen to that little voice in his or her head that tells them whether something is a good idea. And teach them to stick up for others who are being mistreated.

One of my proudest mom moments was when my 5-year-old daughter saw some kids being mean to her friend at the park and she marched right over to them, said, “You leave my friend alone!” and took her friend over to another part of the playground.

Do the right thing. Always.

8) Choose Good Friends

This is a tough one. Once your kids enter elementary school, they start to navigate the surprisingly tricky social world of childhood friendships.

I encourage my kids to have a lot of different friends.

While having a best friend sounds like a great idea, it’s really not when kids are young. Being completely wrapped up in one individual isn’t very healthy. If your child has a friend who they are getting into trouble with, try to get them to understand how that might not be good for them.

The more you can talk your kids through those situations (rather than telling them who they should and should not be friends with), the better off they will be in the long run (hopefully!).

choose good friends

9. Be Creative, Go Outside, Get Dirty

It saddens me to hear how many hours kids spend in front of screens. Video games have become a full-time job for so many.

While I enjoy playing the Wii as much as anyone (though my husband said I am about to be cut off because of my language when I play Mario Kart!), it’s important to have limits. Take a family walk or a bike ride. Have a picnic at the park. Let your kids play in the mud. Plant a garden. Go catch frogs. Finger paint. You get the idea.

Again, you have to set a good example for this.

10) Do What You Can to Make Things Better in the World

While you shouldn’t expect your kids to be raising thousands of dollars for charity or volunteering every weekend, it’s never too early to plant the seed of doing good in the world.

If you give your kids allowance, have them save part of it in a giving jar. Offer to help a neighbor pull weeds. Pay it forward at the drive-thru. Stop to help someone who has dropped something. Again, when your kids see you doing good for others, they will do the same.

I love this blog! I’m so glad I found it. I’m raising my kids to be polite and respectful, and this blog is a great resource. Thanks!

It’s great that you pointed out that it is important to model the behaviors that you want your children to have. I would imagine that at a certain age, children will start to notice that other kids sometimes will look different from them. It would be important to make sure that kids know how to treat others with kindness.

Here’s a huge one you failed to mention don’t touch things that don’t belong to you.

' src=

Ooh, yes! This is common knowledge, yet it is not talked about enough.

It’s great that you explained teaching your kids to be nice to others and they will be nice to you. My son was called to the principal’s office yesterday since he was bullying another child. We’ll remember these tips so we can teach him about being nice and how bullying can hurt kids.

Here’s one that doesn’t get enough attention. — Teach your kids that when they go over to a friends house, to acknowledge/greet the parents of your friend when they arrive and use their name using Mr. or Mrs. Shows respect. When they leave do the same and tell your friend and his/her parents thank you.

I can’t tell you how many times, my kids friends would come over, eat, drink, play and then walk right past me and my husband like we didn’t exist. No social graces.
