The beloved beast's taxidermy remains sit in the natural history museum's cafe. .
In the early 1950s, a farmer caught a panda cub in the county of Baoxing, a part of the province of Sichuan, China . News of the cub’s capture reached the ears of local communist officials, and soon the rare creature was making the long journey to Peking (now known as Beijing ) to be exhibited in the national zoo.
The cub was christened Chi-Chi by her keepers, which translates as “Naughty Little Girl” in Mandarin. Chi-Chi was a crowd favorite. But in 1957, Maoist China’s then-ally, the Soviet Union, made a request for a panda to be exhibited in the Moscow Zoo, and Chi-Chi was sent away.
The Moscow Zoo hoped Chi-Chi would help them establish a captive breeding program. But Chi-Chi and An-An, the zoo’s male panda, refused to mate. Chi-Chi was subsequently returned to China, and was then purchased by a German zoo and sent to what was then East Germany .
Chi-Chi didn’t remain long in East Berlin before she was purchased by the Brookfield Zoo in the United States . However, before she could make the journey to America, the U.S. Treasury Department declared a trade embargo on China, meaning she was denied entry into the country.
As a consequence of being the only giant panda in Western Europe, plans were made for Chi-Chi to tour several countries’ zoos. The London Zoo decided to purchase Chi-Chi and give her a permanent home. The panda became an animal celebrity and was studied by notable zoologists.
Chi Chi died in 1972 at the somewhat young (for a captive panda) age of 18 due to an unexpected illness. Her remains were preserved for posterity, and she was put on display at the Natural History Museum.
The Natural History Museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. and entrance is free. Chi-Chi is located in the museum's Central Cafe, off Hintze Hall, where you can grab a coffee, tea, or a bite to eat and ponder pandas.
Chi Chi is in a glass case on the right at the back.

A. A. Milne’s ‘At The Zoo’ is a magical and funny nursery rhyme that imagines the zoo from the perspective of a child. The speaker ’s difficulty in describing what he sees allows readers to view each animal in a new way. The speaker repeatedly emphasizes that his favorite animal is the elephant to whom he gave buns.

‘At The Zoo’ is a poem about the speaker’s trip to the zoo. He describes his interactions with the various animals, particularly his favorite, the elephant. His mispronunciations and misremembering give the poem an amusing tone .
The speaker lists a number of animals he saw at the zoo, beginning with giant cats. He concludes each stanza by telling the reader that he chose to give buns to the elephant. The speaker describes a number of different mammals, many of whom do not communicate with the speaker in a way he feels is proper. The elephant, however, would seem to have the most satisfactory manners.
‘At The Zoo’ is a nursery rhyme consisting of three stanzas with 8 lines each. In every stanza, the second and fourth lines and the sixth and eighth lines rhyme. This gives the poem an upbeat quality typical of nursery rhymes . Each stanza also ends with the same two lines as a refrain .
There are lions and roaring tigers, and enormous camels and things, There are biffalo-buffalo-bisons, and a great big bear with wings. There’s a sort of a tiny potamus, and a tiny nosserus too – But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to the Zoo!
The speaker describes all of the animals he saw when he went to the zoo, beginning with “lions and roaring tigers.” Both are big, scary cats, and the lion, being the king of the animal kingdom, is particularly impressive to a little kid. He goes on to mention “enormous camels and things,” along with “biffalo-buffalo-bisons.” The word “things” emphasizes the speaker’s lack of knowledge of each animal’s name, while the compound “buffalo-buffalo-bisons” reflects his struggle to categorize exactly what he is looking at. Some of the animals the speaker mentions are easily identifiable, like a “potamus” or hippopotamus, along with a rhinoceros.
Others, however, are more confusing, like the “great big bear with wings.” These bewildering descriptions lend a greater sense of whimsy to the speaker’s perspective. The animals before him are so strange as to be fantastical. He eventually lands on the elephant, who is evidently his favorite because he gave him buns.
There are badgers and bidgers and bodgers, and a Super-in-tendent’s House, There are masses of goats, and a Polar, and different kinds of mouse, And I think there’s a sort of a something which is called a wallaboo – But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to the Zoo!
The speaker continues to list various animals. The alliteration of “badgers and bidgers and bodgers” reflects the speaker’s growing excitement. He is so enthusiastic about the zoo that he does not even stop to think about which of the names is right. The “Super-in-tendent’s House” might be that of the zoo owner, but the joy is in the mystery of it. Since we cannot see what the speaker is seeing, we have to take his word for it.
The hyphens in “Super-in-tendent” suggest that the speaker has to spell it out because the word is long and complex for him. He also capitalizes the word, along with “Zoo,” which lends each place a special importance in the speaker’s mind.
The speaker describes “masses of goats,” which creates an amusing picture, and a “Polar” or polar bear. The “different kinds of mouse” is an example of Milne asking the reader to look at the world in a different way. Many creatures are just some kind of variation of a mouse, but we often get caught up in categorizing them more specifically. The speaker then repeats that he gave buns to the elephants, again emphasizing his love for that animal.
If you try to talk to the bison, he never quite understands; You can’t shake hands with a mingo – he doesn’t like shaking hands. And lions and roaring tigers hate saying, “How do you do?” – But I give buns to the elephant when I go down to the Zoo!
In the last stanza, the speaker beings to explain why the elephant is his favorite. The bison “never quite understands” the speaker when he talks, so the speaker feels ignored. The “mingo,” or flamingo, does not like to shake hands, a type of friendly greeting. That the speaker knows the flamingo “doesn’t like shaking hands” perhaps alludes to some mishap or failed attempt in the past. The speaker explains that the big cats are rude as well because they never greet him. The elephant, however, would seem to be friendlier than any of the other animals.
That the speaker never explains why the elephant is friendlier or better behaved adds to the childlike logic guiding the poem. The speaker completely believes that each animal has a personality and that, if he tries, he can communicate with each of them. By showing readers the zoo through the perspective of a child, Milne helps us appreciate the magic of a zoo and the wonder that comes from interacting with different species.
‘At The Zoo’ was published in Milne’s first poetry collection for children, When We Were Very Young , in 1924. Milne’s collection was very well-received, and he followed it up with the even more popular Winnie-the-Pooh stories.
Some of the animals in ‘At The Zoo’ are easily identifiable, such as the “Polar” or polar bear, while others are more obscure. A “great big bear with wings,” in particular, does not seem to resemble known animals. This confusion, however, only adds to the whimsy and fun of Milne’s poem.
Milton wrote his poetry and Winnie-the-Pooh story collections for his son, Christopher Robin, and took inspiration from the way a young Christopher Robin described the world.
The tone of ‘At The Zoo’ is enthusiastic. The speaker seems to bubble over with excitement as he races to describe different animals. To the adult reader, the poem also has a tone of amusement that comes from the author himself.
