Kazakh national holidays
National holidays of kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan with its vast territory contains many nationalities that have committed to the growth of the number of the Kazakh public holidays. Today Kazakhstan celebrates the holidays of the major religions in the country and the holidays adopted from Russians during the tsar period and later in Soviet time, added with some new holidays that have emerged after Independence.
New Year - January 1st
New Year is one of the biggest if not the biggest and most beloved holidays in Kazakhstan and all Central Asia. Originally, New Year celebration was adopted from the Russians in the mid 19th century from the Russians that were sent to Kazakhstan. Like the other post-Soviet countries, Kazakhstan is still celebrating widely this holiday with a compulsory Russian “Olivie” salad and decorations.
In the cities and villages open-air carnivals are hosted together with the midnight fireworks. Kazakh have their own Santa Claus but he is called Ayaz Ata and accompanied with Ayaz Kyz, who is a kind of granddaughter Snow Girl character. Kazakh Ayaz Ata is has a great alikeness with traditional Western Santa Claus, similarly bringing gifts for children but wearing a Kazakh white kalpak.
The celebration starts on the 31st of December with the preparation of the dining table which is the centerpiece of the party. As usually, m idnight is the main climax of the new year celebration, so before midnight all the close friends and families gather around the table and await the coming of the new year. When it comes a few minutes to midnight, everyone participate in the countdown and cheer the glasses with Sovetskya sparkling wine and exchange wishes in their toasts for success and happiness with one another.
Nauryz - March 22nd
“Nauryz” word originates from the Persian language, and the word literally means “new day”. It is celebrated on March 22 in all Central Asia, and it is considered the beginning of spring. Nauryz is also a symbol of renewal and the birth of a new life. It is also believed to be the day when day and night are equalized and it is actually not far from the spring equinox (19th, 20th or 21st depending on the year).
Kazakhs consider the beginning of the new year “Ulystyk uly kuni” – a great day for the people. Celebration traditions are aimed to show the best human qualities – openness, cordiality, mercy. Commonly, on Nauryz, Kazakhstanis wear nice clothes , go out, praise each other, have fun, sing and hold folk games . During Nauryz, you can also observe some national competitions such as horse races, aitys (akyns’ competitions), etc.
Nauryz kozhe is a traditional food during Nauryz. The dish combines seven ingredients: smoked meat, milk, millet, wheat, corn, water and butter. Today the recipe for “kozhe” is changing by including more ingredients in addition to the traditional ones depending on the cook’s taste.
Orthodox Christmas - January 7th
An official holiday in Kazakhstan since 2005, but not everyone celebrates it as only about 23% of the population of Kazakhstan are Orthodox Christian who celebrate the Orthodox Christian on the January 7th.
Across the country, the Church bells chime and festive rituals are recited in Orthodox churches. The celebration starts with the visit to the churches with the the biggest Assumption Cathedrals located in Almaty and Astana . After the service, it is common for believers to visit relatives and friends, praising each other with gifts, sweets and special Christmas presents.
Day of the capital - June 10th
Since Astana obtained the status of capital in 1998, Kazakhstan celebrated Capital Day in Kazakhstan on June 10. Whether it is a coincidence or not but 10th of June is also the birthday of the first and ex-president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev.
Astana is the only capital in Central Asia that was built and developed after Independence. The northernmost capital of Central Asia, located in Euroasia, it blends elements of both East and West. The most fascinating architectural structure is The Palace of Peace, Reconciliation and Baiterek. In 1999, UNESCO recognized Astana as “The City of Peace”.
Day of Kazakhstan's First President - December 1st
Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the official name of this holiday. It marks the first presidential elections that were held on December 1st, 1991 in Kazakhstan after the break-up of the Soviet Union. The day became an official public holiday in 2011.
The day marks the achievements of the first president and aims to strengthen the peace and harmony in Kazakhstan. Normally, it is celebrated with cultural events that are held throughout Kazakhstan and by the festive fireworks arranged in the evening in honor of the (ex) first president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Kazakhstan Independence Day - December 16th
Kazakstan became independent from the Soviet Union on December 16, 1991. Since this day a new period began in the history of the country. Independence day is one of the primary holidays in Kazakhstanis which is celebrated with feasts and fireworks.

Kazakhstan Independence Day – December 16, 2024
Kazakhstan’s biggest national holiday since 1991 has naturally been its Independence Day, celebrated on December 16. What makes it even bigger is the fact that it is often celebrated across two days — December 16 and 17. Not just that, if December 16 falls on a weekend, the following Monday is considered a holiday. The Kazakhs set up yurts, indulge in delicacies, and dance the night away to folk music! They also dress up in traditional fashion for the ceremony at Ak Orda Presidential Palace. They sure know how to celebrate; would you want to join in the revelry too?
History of Kazakhstan Independence Day
Situated on the Eurasian Steppe, Kazakhstan is the biggest country in the region. As a result, it has been a melting pot of cultures, peoples, empires, and more. Neanderthals and their ancestors were also present in central Kazakhstan hundreds of thousands of years ago. After centuries of changes in weather, terrain, and rulers, Kazakhstan has turned out to be the beautiful country we know today. It’s a shame that it was only a couple of decades ago that the nation gained independence.
So, how did they gain independence after all? It all happened in the year 1991. Hoping to maintain unity within the Soviet Union, a referendum that March resulted in Kazakhstan voting 95% in favor of forming a new Union of Sovereign States. In August, communists of the Soviet Union made a failed attempt, the infamous August Coup, to take control of the country from Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet President at the time. Eventually, the Supreme Soviet – or ‘supreme council’ — of Kazakhstan then passed the Constitutional Independence Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan in December, finally declaring independence.
Kazakhstan was the last of the Soviet states to declare its independence, even though the Soviet Union collapsed rather swiftly. Soon after this, the Alma-Ata Protocol was put in place to form the Commonwealth of Independent States. This independence was marked by the era of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who established not only a new capital but also a new two-house parliamentary system. He would rule the newly independent Kazakhstan for nearly three decades.

Kazakhstan Independence Day FAQ s
How did kazakhstan gain independence.
In 1991, a referendum in March resulted in Kazakhstan voting majorly in favor of forming a new Union of Sovereign States. After the failed August Coup, the Supreme Soviet of Kazakhstan passed the Constitutional Independence Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan in December, finally attaining independence.
Who did Kazakhstan declare independence from in 1991?
The last republic to leave the USSR, the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Republic of Kazakhstan in 1991. The Soviet Union was disbanded later in December by the Soviet of the Republics.
Why did Kazakhstan leave the USSR?
With the collapse of the Communist Party seemingly inevitable, there really wasn’t any USSR left to be a part of. With Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus having withdrawn, Kazakhstan really didn’t have much reason to remain.
How to Celebrate Kazakhstan Independence Day
Stay indoors.
The Kazakhs tend to celebrate the occasion indoors, in yurts or otherwise, owing to the harsh cold of the winter season in the region.
Indulge in delicacies
Many villages set up these yurts, which are a form of traditional tents, under which local delicacies are served.
Dance with joy
The Astana Opera takes it upon itself to organize live concerts, featuring national orchestras that perform traditional music.
5 Facts About The Republic Of Kazakhstan
Welcoming people.
Kazakhstan hosts close to 120 ethnic groups and nationalities.
Russian border
The border that Kazakhstan shares with Russia is the longest continuous land border in the world, stretching a whopping 4,660 feet.
Kazakhstan is the world’s largest country that doesn’t have direct access to the ocean.
Uranium reserves
No ocean access, but Kazakhstan has the second-largest uranium reserves in the world.
Highest chimney
The chimney of Ekibastuz GRES-2 power station is the highest in the world, standing 1,377 feet tall.
Why Kazakhstan Independence Day is Important
Never forget.
Activists often use the occasion to remind the Russian government of its attempted genocide of the Kazakh population during the famine of 1932. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin also forcefully displaced the Kazakh population for more than two decades.
Always remember
It is also used as a day of remembrance of the 1986 Jeltoqsan protests against Gennady Kolbin’s government, which took place on the same date at Republic Square. By the 1980s, democratization in the Soviet Union started to rise owing to these protests.
Freedom ultimately
Obviously, every independence day of any country is ultimately important for the freedom of its people. After all, they are the ones who make the country.

Kazakhstan Celebrates Nauryz
By Rufiya Ospanova in Nation on 20 March 2014
The origin of this holiday, which has no direct relationship to Islamic traditions, is rooted in the pre-literate era of human history. It acquired an official status in the Achaemenid Empire as a religious holiday of Zoroastrianism. It continued to be celebrated after the Islamic conquests until the present time. In modern times, it is celebrated in days of the vernal equinox.
Nauryz is a very important holiday for Kazakhs as it marks the beginning of a traditional new year. Under the current law, it is celebrated for at least three days starting March 21, the day of the spring equinox. This year, because of the holidays falling on a weekend, the Nauryz is to be celebrated over five days, from March 21 to March 25.
Nauryz means “new day” and symbolises goodness and wealth, happiness and love. It is also a day that unites because it is celebrated by many nations.
During Nauryz celebrations, past offenses are forgiven and forgotten and everybody makes a wish to leave negativity behind and bring renewal to the New Year.
During the Nauryz holiday in Kazakhstan, large and small cities, as well as villages become festival centres, felt yurts – traditional nomad houses – are erected in city centres and a rich dastarkhan (table) is laid down in each of them.
City squares are filled with yurts and live performances. Visitors can learn about Kazakh culture, the lifestyle of nomads and see people wearing beautiful traditional clothing. They can also listen to Kazakh songs and play national musical instruments. Traditional gifts and souvenirs are also sold in the squares.
Young people usually also gather around Altybakan, a large hanging swing with colourful decorations, where songs are sung and traditional games are played. During Nauryz, many famous stars also give concerts in cities and the holiday is completed with fireworks.
The main dish served during Nauryz is Nauryz kozhe, which is also the main symbol of the holiday. Nauryz kozhe is special for its unique recipe. Traditionally, seven ingredients are added to Nauryz kozhe. They vary, but usually include water, meat, salt, milk or yoghurt, one type of grain, chosen from rice, corn or wheat and others. Seven ingredients symbolise seven virtues, such as joy, success, intelligence, health, wealth, agility and security.
During the celebration, the kozhe is offered to all guests in any Kazakh city or village. Other traditional Kazakh meals, such as beshbarmak, kuyrdak, baursaks and many types of meals made from milk (yoghurt, kurt, cream, butter and cheese) are also offered.
Between 1926-1988, when Kazakhstan was a Soviet Socialistic Republic, Nauryz was not officially celebrated in the republic. In 2009, three days beginning each March 21 were declared national holidays in Kazakhstan.
On Sept. 30, 2009, Nauryz was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Since then, March 21 has been known as the International Day of Nauryz.

Nauryz Holiday in Kazakhstan
Nauryz – Feast of Spring Renewal
March 21 - 23.
In Kazakhstan, the arrival of spring on March 21 st is celebrated with Nauryz, a holiday which welcomes not only the spring equinox but also the renewal of nature. For eastern nations, including Kazakhstan, New Year traditionally began not on January 1 st but on Nauryz, and even the name of the holiday translates from Farsi as “New Day”.
Nauryz is not considered a religious holiday in Kazakhstan -it was celebrated before the arrival of Islam, and in fact is a remnant of ancient pagan cultic traditions which honored the forces of nature. Comparative celebrations include Lori, the last day of cold, in India; Jam en-Nessim, the beginning of spring, in Egypt; Tu BiShvat ,the season of rain, in Israel; and Sumarsdag, the arrival of summer, in Iceland.
The Nauryz holiday in Kazakhstan symbolizes fertility, friendship and love. On this special day people dress up, visit close friends and family and offer well wishes to everyone around them. The day is filled with singing, dancing, national games and special foods, most notably kumys , a fermented dairy product made of horse milk, and the must-try traditional dish called nauryz-kozhe .
Kazakhs believe that if you indulge in nayruz-kozhe on Nauryz, your year is bound to be prosperous. Nauryz-kozhe is a nutritionally rich soup that is cooked from seven ingredients: meat, water, flour, butter, millet (may be replaced with rice or corn), salt and milk. Just as the Nauryz holiday in Kazakhstan is filled with symbolism, each component of nauryz-kozhe symbolizes one of life’s seven prosperous elements: growth, luck, happiness, wealth, health, wisdom and heavenly protection.
Since the number seven holds special meaning at Nauryz, the seven ingredients of nauryz-kozhe are combined and poured into seven bowls which are placed in front of respected older men called aksakals . On Nauryz, each person should invite seven guests to his home and visit seven other houses in turn.
Nauryz isn’t just about the food, however. Congratulations of “Koktem tudi!” (Spring is born!) are proclaimed, and traditional poets called akins compete in lively competitions. Other national contests prominent at Nauryz celebrations in Kazakhstan include kazaksha-gures (national wrestling), a logic game called toguz kumalak and Kazakhstan’s famous horse games, kyz-kuu and bayga . Theatrical performances are enacted in city plazas while girls and boys gather together to socialize and play on large log swings called altybakan .
Nauryz is not only a 3-day public holiday in Kazakhstan, it is also acknowledged by the UN as an International Holiday. Nauryz is celebrated in every country in Central Asia and other countries in the region, including Georgia, India, Iran, China and Turkey.
