How to manage re-submitted assignments in canvas.
By default, students always have the option to resubmit their Canvas assignments, even after the Due date. If a student resubmits, they lose all access to any earlier submissions they have made —: including access to instructor feedback on the earlier submission. Instructors see re-submissions in their To Do list on the course home page and as ungraded submissions in the grade book. In Speedgrader, a toggle appears in the upper right corner if there are multiple submission by the student. The most recent submission must be graded, but the instructor can apply an earlier grade to it. If resubmitted assignments are not graded, the activity does not count towards the student’s course grade and there can be a different between the student and instructor view of the earned graded. Instructors can reduce this problem by limiting the number of submissions allowed and only grading after the activity has closed.

New tool available in the Canvas Speedgrader Submission Reassignments
March 21, 2021
The latest update of Canvas (March 21, 2021) introduced a new feature in the Speedgrader: Submission Reassignments.
SpeedGrader: Submission Reassignments (2021-03-20 Release) from Instructure Canvas Community on Vimeo .
In SpeedGrader, instructors can reassign an assignment with a due date to an individual student and ask them to redo their submission.
Change Benefit
This change allows instructors to provide feedback and reassign an assignment to an individual student, which places the assignment back in the List View Dashboard as another assignment to complete.
Affected User Roles & Behaviors
Instructors
For online assignments with a due date, instructors can view a Reassign button in SpeedGrader. If they require a student to redo an assignment, they can reassign the assignment directly to the student from within their grading workflow in SpeedGrader. The instructor must first provide feedback regarding the assignment, which will enable the button. The reassignment does not change the original due date for the student.
- The Reassign Assignment button is not available for External Tools (LTI), on paper, and no submission assignments.
- The Reassign Assignment button is only available for assignments with due dates.
- If an instructor returns to SpeedGrader after navigating away from the page, the Reassign Assignment button shows that the assignment has been reassigned.
- If the assignment’s settings do not allow students to make an additional attempt, the Reassign Assignment shows that the assignment is not able to be reassigned.
When an assignment is reassigned, students see the assignment in the List View Dashboard with the instructor’s feedback. Students can resubmit the assignment and submit for additional feedback from their instructor.

- How do I allow a student extra time to (re)submit an assignment submission?
Updated on Apr 19, 2022
In the event that a student needs to resubmit a file to an Assignment activity that is locked because the Available / Until dates have passed, instructors can update an Assignment's settings to provide the singular student access to re-upload their work.
Individual students may need extra time to submit or even resubmit files for a variety of reasons including:
- Accessibility Accommodations
- Instructor Approved Extension
- Multiple Draft Submissions
- Uploaded Incorrect File
- Uploaded Corrupted File*
- Navigate into your Assignment item and click the " Edit" button.
- In the Assignment setup page, scroll down to the " Assign " settings.
- Click the " +Add " button to add additional assign criteria.
This process assumes that your Assignment's Submission Attempts setting is set to Unlimited, which is the default for Assignments. If you have an Assignment with Limited attempts set to one (1), then you will need to first delete the student's submission, then follow the steps listed above before they can resubmit.
- In the new box that opens below the original Assign section, click into the " Assign To " field to select your student that needs to resubmit.
- Set the " Due " date and " Until " date to the day and time when the student must have their file resubmitted.
- When done, click " Save ."
*Students may sometimes upload a corrupted file intentionally, to give the illusion of an on time submission and thereby gain additional time to work on the assignment. Common ways of corrupting a file include changing the file extension (i.e. taking a .png file and changing it to a .doc to make it appear like a Word document), interrupting the Save / Compress file process, or downloading a file that looks corrupted when opened.

Can a student resubmit Canvas assignments?
Depending on your assignment settings, students may have unlimited or limited assignment submission attempts. As an instructor, you can decide how to handle assignment resubmissions.
You do have the option to set availability dates for each assignment. Availability dates can restrict the dates that an assignment can be submitted.
All assignment submissions can be viewed in SpeedGrader. Students will not be able to view their previous submissions after resubmitting unless you reupload the assignments to Canvas .
Note: The option to resubmit an assignment may not be available for external tool assignments.
Select Submission Attempts
If submission attempt settings have been enabled by your institution, you can select the number of submission attempts allowed for all students. In the Allowed Attempts drop-down menu [1], you can select if students receive unlimited submissions [2] or limited submissions [3].
If you select the Limited attempts option, you can select the amount of attempts allowed in the Number of Attempts field [4].
Note: If the Allowed Attempts drop-down menu does not display in your assignment settings, it either hasn't been enabled by your institution or the feature option may need to be enabled in your Course Settings.
Set Assignment Availability Dates
If you want to keep students from resubmitting assignments after a certain date, you can change the Assignment availability dates. Next to the date you want to change, choose the Calendar icon.
Set the date and time the assignment availability date by selecting a date [1] and time [2]. Click the Done button [3].
Save Assignment
Click the Save button.
Student View for Resubmit Assignment
If a student can resubmit an assignment, the Re-submit Assignment button displays in the assignment page [1]. If a student has used all their submission attempts, the Re-submit Assignment button will display as disabled [2].
View Assignments in SpeedGrader
Open the student's Assignment in SpeedGrader. When a student has submitted multiple submissions, you can view them by clicking the drop-down button.
Select Submission
Select the submission you'd like to view.
Viewing Older Submissions
If you view an older submission, Canvas will warn you that the submission you are viewing is not the most recent version.
Regrading Assignments
If you have already graded an assignment that a student has resubmitted, you have the option of using the same grade for the resubmission without doing any additional work. To apply the same grade to the new assignment, click the Use this same grade for the resubmission link.

Canvas Reassign Assignment: An Easy Way to Ask Students to Resubmit Work
Canvas has added a new tool in SpeedGrader to simplify your workflow. Imagine a student submits an assignment, but they dropped it in the wrong assignment or just grabbed the wrong document to upload. Previously, you’d message the student or leave a comment in SpeedGrader. The student would then need to see that note and remember to complete the request. Now Canvas has added a button in SpeedGrader that will add an assignment back to a student’s to-do list.
Before we get into the how of this feature, there are some limitations you need to know about.
- This feature is only available for some types of assignments. It’s not available for External Tool (LTI), on paper, or no submission assignment types.
- The assignment must have a due date in order to use this feature.
- This feature does not automatically extend the due date/close date for an assignment. If either of those need to be adjusted, you will need to do that manually.
Using the submission reassignment feature is simple. Navigate to SpeedGrader for an assignment. If your assignment meets the criteria above, you’ll see a greyed-out “Reassign Submission” button on the right panel below the feedback comment box. Enter a comment in the feedback box (we suggest something that includes instructions or context for what you want the student to do) and submit the comment. That will activate the “Reassign Assignment” button and send it back to the student’s to-do list.
