Eligibility

Confirm that you and your nominating institution meet all the criteria below before you apply for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS).

Nominations that do not meet all of the eligibility criteria will be deemed ineligible.

Candidate eligibility

Citizenship.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

Eligibility to apply for a Vanier CGS

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:

  • be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota Footnote 1 ;
  • be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, MBA/PhD - if it has a demonstrated and significant research component);
  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution; For joint graduate research programs, only the PhD portion of the program is eligible for funding.
  • The doctoral program would begin after the completion of a master's degree. The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
  • The months of study are calculated starting from the date on which an applicant is officially registered in the joint graduate program. (For MA/PhD or MS/PhD, this will be the master's registration date).
  • The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
  • The months of study completed are calculated from the original master's enrolment date.
  • Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept Vanier CGS applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion.
  • cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral program.

Please note that only the PhD portion of a joint program is eligible for funding.

Eligibility of program of study

  • An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as requirement for a completion of the program.
  • Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Number of months of doctoral studies

Regardless of disciplines, all prior doctoral-level studies that started in Canada or abroad, are considered in the evaluation of eligibility, and are considered to be continuous, full-time, and uninterrupted unless otherwise confirmed by the institution (including the summer months, unless on official leave). The Vanier-Banting Secretariat will count two months of part-time study as one month of full-time study.

Students who studied on a part-time basis must outline their part-time study in the Other Application material task attachment. The information must also be reflected in the transcripts.

Joint graduate research programs

If you are registered in a joint graduate research program , and a master's degree is obtained as part of the program (for example, MA/PhD, MS/PhD), the months of study are calculated starting from the date on which you are officially registered in the joint program (including the master's portion of the program).

If you are registered in a joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD ), only the months of study in the PhD portion will be counted.

Nominating institution

The nominating institution must have received a Vanier CGS quota .

Eligibility to hold a Vanier CGS

Without exception, the Vanier CGS is tenable only at the eligible Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.

To hold the Vanier CGS, the candidate must:

  • be registered Footnote 2 in a full-time doctoral program (or joint graduate research program MA/PhD, MSc/PhD, or MD/PhD) at the nominating Canadian institution;
  • not hold a faculty appointment concurrently with a Vanier Scholarship unless they arrange for a leave of absence from the appointment;
  • remain enrolled and demonstrate continued satisfactory progress in their doctoral program;
  • not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral program;
  • not be concurrently holding any other CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC training award (note: Michael Smith Foreign Studies Supplement excepted); and
  • begin their award within 12 months of the earliest possible start date and start on May 1, September 1, or January 1 following the offer of award.

Part-time studies

A Vanier CGS may be held by students who are registered part-time due to disability, parental or medical reasons, or family and community-related responsibilities. Requests which fall outside these areas will be reviewed by the agencies on a case-by-case basis. For eligible part-time students, the Vanier CGS will be equivalent to full-time funding spread over a longer period of time.

Canadian federal government employees

Please refer to the Tri-agency policy on the use of funds for federal government employees applying to granting agency programs to determine eligibility.

Multiple applications

Eligible candidates may apply to both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program and other agency-specific doctoral-level scholarship/fellowships programs (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency) in the same academic year, provided that the research proposed in each application falls within the mandate of the federal granting agency to which the application is submitted. For more information, please refer to Identify area of research .

Note: since eligibility, evaluation criteria and competition deadlines are different; applications submitted to Vanier CGS are not considered in agency-specific doctoral award competitions. You must apply to each program individually.

Candidates who are successful in both competitions will have to choose which award to accept.

Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s allocations reflect new distribution of CGS scholarships across the federal granting agencies

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada today released the 2021-22 fiscal year institutional allocations for the Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s (CGS M).

This year’s CGS M scholarship allocations by institution are based on a refreshed formula for the distribution of both CGS M and doctoral (CGS D) scholarships across the three agencies. Starting in 2021-22, distribution of the CGS scholarships will be as follows:

Agency CGS M CGS D
CIHR 795 750
NSERC 840 990
SSHRC 1,365 1,260

The refreshed distribution formula is based on an in-depth tri-agency review and reflects the evolution of graduate student enrolment data from Statistics Canada. This formula was guided by the principles of transparency, reliability, accuracy, accessibility, data stability and representativeness of the student population.

This new formula supports equitable access to funding for graduate students across all fields and disciplines and is aligned with the Government of Canada’s 2019 20% increase in the number of permanent CGS scholarships. The distribution formula will be reviewed every five years to ensure the scholarships continue to support graduate students in their chosen fields of study.

The CGS program is a key pillar of the granting agencies’ strategy to build research talent and retain high-calibre students at Canadian institutions. They are part of a suite of tri-agency and agency-specific research training programs.

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Description

The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada (refer to  Eligibility for more information). This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline date
  • be enrolled in, have applied for or will apply for full-time admission * to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation
  • respect the internal deadline to apply for admission for your intended program of study—contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s) for more detailed information
  • have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application
  • a master’s program
  • a doctoral program that you are entering directly from a bachelor’s program without having ever been enrolled in any graduate programs (direct-entry)
  • a combined master’s-doctoral program
  • a master’s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program, either before or after award activation, with no master’s degree conferred (fast-track)
  • a master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program
  • or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award at that same institution, allowing it to be activated during the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are requesting funding
  • not have held or be currently holding a CGS M scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC
  • not have held or be currently holding an Indigenous Scholars Award and Supplement
  • Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept CGS M applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion
  • Note: Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained

*Refer to the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for details regarding part-time admission. **All studies credited toward the eligible program will be counted, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution. Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Program of study eligibility

An eligible graduate program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) as well as clinically oriented programs of study , including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Master’s programs that are based only on course work are typically not eligible since they do not include a significant research component, as described above.

Given the specific requirements of certain disciplines, institutions are invited to contact the appropriate agency for guidance on the eligibility of programs of study.

Eligible locations of tenure

Without exception, CGS M awards are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions .

Field of research and subject matter eligibility

NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

The Tri-agency is acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Black student researchers

The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers . CGS M applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated for specific groups may be able to receive this funding through a scholarship as part of this initiative. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS M awards reserved for this initiative.

For more information, consult the Frequently asked questions about the new Black scholars funding web page.

Application procedures

To apply to the CGS M program, you must complete and submit an application to up to three institutions using the Research Portal. Consult the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program: Instructions for completing an application for more information on how to apply.

Allocations

Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned a separate allocation of awards to offer from each agency. Institutions must respect the agency-specific allocation. Refer to the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s award allocations page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency.

Note: As the application deadline approaches, delays may occur due to a high volume of users on the Research Portal, which may prevent the timely submission of your application. It is your responsibility to strictly follow the instructions for completing an application . Requests to submit late applications will not be accepted.

Selection process

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each institution is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the CGS M applications. Refer to Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program information and instructions for scholarships liaison officers for more information on the selection process.

Your reporting on the 2024 Canadian federal budget’s announcement of substantial pay rises for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers ( Nature 629 , 19–20; 2024 ) notes a marked step in acknowledging the value of scientific research. Kaitlin Kharas presents the process of lobbying for the successful change ( Nature 631 , 256; 2024 ). However, we are concerned that there is a widespread misunderstanding among the student community about the extent of these increases.

Celebrating Excellence: Julie Godin, Recipient of the 2024 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

Julie Godin

Why did you choose to study at the University of Ottawa and the Faculty of Social Sciences?

For me, the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa is the perfect environment to pursue my reflections and work on violence against women, particularly among those with marginalized bodies. I will benefit from the UO's excellence in research and teaching, and the School of Social Work's specialization in health. The presence of the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies and the anchoring of the Feminist Anti-Violence Research Collective (FemAnVi) at the School of Social Work, a collective in which I am already involved, are also major assets in my choice of university, as their proximity will enable me to evolve in a multidisciplinary context.

Finally, one of the most important factors in my decision to pursue doctoral studies was the relationship I developed with my director Alexandre Baril, a professor at the School of Social Work. Right from the start of my time at the UO, he was supportive and genuinely committed to my success. As a specialist in gender and body studies himself, I benefit from his expertise and support in achieving my doctoral objectives. So, despite the distance between my home in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region and the University of Ottawa, all of these factors led me to want to study in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Can you tell us a little about your research?

Although it's commonly believed that it's unlikely that fat women are victims of sexual violence, based on grossophobic stereotypes of their sexuality, they report a higher rate of such violence than thinner women. They are targeted by such violence because of their weight, and the aggressions they suffer are linked to their fatness, for example with www.googrossophobic insults. The consequences of this violence affect all spheres of their lives, including their relationship with their bodies.

That's why this project aims to answer the following question: how does the sexual and grossophobic violence experienced by fat women in Quebec influence their relationship to their bodies? Through the mobilization of intersectionality, this project proposes the use of theories from fat studies, feminist studies and gender studies. It will employ two modes of data collection. Firstly, it will make visible the experience of these women and the consequences of this violence on their relationship with their bodies through 25 individual interviews with women who have experienced this violence. Secondly, participants wishing to be involved in the second phase of data collection will be invited to take part in two focus groups.

The aim of these groups will be, on the one hand, to enable them to reappropriate the knowledge generated during the interviews and, on the other, to give them a space to express themselves collectively on this issue.

In scientific terms, this project will make an original contribution to the fields of gender studies, fat studies, body studies, social work and psychology, by exploring the complex links between grossophobia and sexual violence. At the social level, this project has the potential to offer a new perspective on the experience and support of these women, by emphasizing the grossophobic dimension of certain assaults. How important has your time at the Faculty of Social Sciences been to your achievements?

Having started my PhD program in January 2024, I'm still in the early stages of my career at the Faculty of Social Sciences. However, the attentiveness, availability and solidarity of colleagues, professors and support staff are undeniable and have enabled me to integrate in a very short time, making it easier for me to adapt to this new context of study. The fact that I can benefit from quality teaching in French is also a lever for my success and makes me proud to be able to develop knowledge and carry out work in my mother tongue. What are your next steps?

All the steps leading up to the completion of my doctorate will enable me to pursue my reflections on the links between sexual violence and grossophobia on the relationship to women's bodies, but also on my position as a researcher and activist. Now, I'm halfway through my program, and my courses will be completed by the end of the fall 2024 semester. I'll then be able to embark on my comprehensive exam to consolidate my theoretical learning about my subject of study. In the summer of 2025, I'll be able to start developing the recruitment and data collection tools needed to present my project to the UO's Research Ethics Committee (REC) in the social sciences and humanities. This step is essential before I can begin collecting data from the women in my study population. Finally, the analysis of the data and the writing of my thesis
