Basic resume tips
Let's start with the basic do's and don'ts when putting your resume together. Listing your skills is not the only thing that matters—choosing the right format and sections is equally crucial. Here are some tips for writing a resume from scratch:
1. Don’t try to cram every skill and work experience onto your resume
Think of your resume not as a comprehensive list of your career history, but as a marketing document selling you as the perfect person for the role you’re applying to. For each resume you send out, you’ll want to highlight only the accomplishments and skills that are most relevant to the job at hand (even if that means you don’t include all of your experience ).
This is called tailoring your resume and it helps anyone who reads it see exactly why you’re a match for a specific position.
2. But keep a resume outline with a full list of your qualifications
Since you’ll be swapping different information in and out depending on the job you’re applying to, save a resume outline —or maybe our resume worksheet —on your computer with old positions, bullet points tailored for different applications, and special projects that only sometimes make sense to include. Think of this as your brag file. Then, when you’re crafting each resume, it’s just a matter of cutting and pasting relevant information together.
3. Ditch the objective statement
The only time an objective section makes sense is when you’re making a huge career change and need to explain from the get-go why your experience doesn’t match up with the position you’re applying to. In every other case, resume objectives just make you look old-fashioned or out of touch.
Read More: 3 Reasons You Should Ditch That Resume Objective—and 3 Things You Can Do Instead
4. Put the best, most relevant information first
In journalism speak, “above the fold” refers to what you see on the front half of a folded newspaper (or, in the digital age, before you scroll down on a website)—basically it’s your first impression of a document. In resume speak, it means you should make sure your most relevant qualifications are visible on the top third of your resume.
This top section is what the hiring manager is going to see first—and what will serve as a hook for someone to keep on reading. If your most recent position isn’t the most relevant piece of your candidacy, consider leading with a skills section (such as in a combination resume format ) or writing a resume summary .
5. Choose the right resume format for you
There are lots of different ways to organize the information on your resume—like the functional resume or combination resume. But the good old reverse chronological —where your most recent experience is listed first—is usually your best bet. Unless it’s absolutely necessary in your situation, skip the functional or skills-based resume—hiring managers might wonder what you’re hiding.
6. Keep it concise
The two-page resume is a hotly debated topic, but the bottom line is this—you want the information here to be as short as possible, and keeping it to one page forces you to prioritize what really matters. If you truly have enough relevant and important experience, training, and credentials to showcase on more than one page of your resume, then go for two. But if you can tell the same story in less space? Do it.

7. Include relevant links
Can’t figure out how to tell your whole story on one page, or want to be able to include some visual examples of your work? Instead of trying to have your resume cover everything, cover the most important details on that document. Then, include a link to your personal website , your online portfolio , examples of your work, or a relevant, professional social media profile , where you can dive more into what makes you the ideal candidate.
Just avoid hyperlinking over words that are key to understanding your resume, since it can throw off the tools employers use to store and parse resumes.
8. Be aware of the ATS
You may have heard that employers are using computers to “read” your resume and decide who to hire and reject. That’s not exactly true. But most employers do use software called an applicant tracking system—or ATS—to parse resumes and organize them so that recruiters and hiring managers can search for the most relevant applications.
You should assume your resume will pass through an ATS at some point during your job search, so understanding how it works will help make your hunt more efficient. (All of the tips for resume writing in this list keep ATSs in mind as well!)

Resume formatting tips
Your resume's format matters as much as the content it holds. Aim for a simple and minimalist layout, without overwhelming columns, colors, or graphic elements. Here are some key resume formatting tips to help you stand out:
9. Keep your resume format simple
We’ll talk about getting creative in order to stand out in a minute. But the most basic principle of good resume formatting and design? Keep it simple. Make your resume easy on hiring managers’ eyes by using a reasonably sized default font like Helvetica or Arial and leaving a healthy amount of white space on the page. Your main focus here should be on readability for the hiring manager (and that pesky ATS).

10. Stand out with ATS-friendly design elements
Really want your resume to stand out from the sea of Times New Roman? Yes, creative resumes —like infographics, videos, or presentations can set you apart, but you have to make sure they actually get read. If you’re uploading your resume to a job application site or online portal, use ATS-friendly formatting elements like:
- Bold and italic text
- Underlining (in headings or over hyperlinks)
- Different text alignments
- Columns that can be read straight across
11. Avoid design elements that can’t be “read” by computers
On the flip side, it’s best to avoid design elements that ATSs are known to have trouble with such as:
- Logos and icons
- Images and photos
- Graphics, graphs, or other visuals
- Headers and footers
- Less common fonts
- Columns that can only be read from top to bottom
12. Make your contact info prominent
You don’t need to include your address on your resume anymore (really!), but you do need to make sure to include a phone number and professional-sounding email address (but not one affiliated with another job!) as well as other places the hiring manager can find you on the web, like your LinkedIn profile, plus your pronouns if you’d like to.

13. Design your resume for skimmability
You’ve probably heard before that hiring managers don’t spend a lot of time on each individual resume. So help them get as much information as possible in as little time as possible, by making your resume easy to skim .
Work experience resume tips
Recruiters nowadays want to know more than a simple description of your responsibilities. They're looking for the results and impacts of your work, as well as the connection between your experience and the position you're applying for now.
That said, let's take a look at some resume writing tips for describing your work experience:
14. Keep your work experience recent and relevant
As a rule, you should only show the most recent 10-15 years of your career and only include the experiences that are relevant to the positions you’re applying to. Remember to allocate real estate on your resume according to importance. If there’s a choice between including one more college internship or going into more detail about your current role, always choose the latter (unless the internship was more relevant to the role you’re applying for).
15. Don’t forget your transferable skills and experiences
Don’t panic if you don’t have any professional experience that fits the bill. Focus your resume on your relevant and transferable skills along with any related side or academic projects , and then make sure to pair it with a strong cover letter telling the narrative of why you’re ideal for the job.

16. Write strong, achievement-focused bullet points
The bullet points under each job entry are arguably the most important part of your resume. They tell whoever’s reading it what skills you have, how you’ve used them, and how you’ve helped your employers in the past.
So start with a strong action verb , include relevant skills from the job description , and frame your bullets around your achievements—don’t just list your job duties . Tell them how your work benefitted your boss or company so they know what they stand to gain by hiring you.
Here’s a simple formula to follow:
- Compelling verb + job duty + key skills used = tangible result
So you might say: “ Developed an upgrade to the employee database, ensuring the smooth flow of critical operations, which led to a 35% increase in efficiency. ”
17. Curate your bullet points and experiences
No matter how long you’ve been in a job, or how much you’ve accomplished there, you shouldn’t have more than eight bullet points under it—and that’s only for your most recent and relevant job. Jobs further back should generally be limited to four to six bullets.
Read More: How Many Bullet Points Should Each Job on Your Resume Have?
18. Use as many numbers as you can
Use facts, figures, and numbers whenever possible in your bullet points. How many people were impacted by your work? By what percentage did you exceed your goals? Quantifying your accomplishments allows the hiring manager to picture the level of work or responsibility you needed to achieve them.
19. Don’t neglect non-traditional work
There’s no law that says you can only put full-time or paid work on your resume. So, if you’ve volunteered , worked part-time or as a temporary or contract worker , freelanced, or interned? Absolutely list these things as their own “jobs” within your career chronology—as long as they’re relevant to the job you’re applying for. The same goes for career breaks . Yes, really.

20. Use important keywords from the job description
Scan the job description, see what words are used most often, and make sure you’ve included them in your bullet points. For example, does the job description list “CRM” or “Salesforce”? Make sure your resume matches. Not only is this a self-check that you’re targeting your resume to the job, but it’ll also make it easier to search for your resume in an ATS.

Resume tips for including your education
Most hiring managers will want to know your education level, even if it's not necessarily relevant to the position you're going for. This section is especially important for those changing careers or applying for entry-level jobs—as your education can be an indicator of the skills you have.
Here's some resume tips and tricks for this section:
21. Put experience first, education later
Unless you’re a recent graduate , put your education after your experience. Chances are, your last couple of jobs are more important and relevant to you getting the job than where you went to college.
22. Also keep it in reverse chronological order
Generally, you should list your educational background with the most recent or advanced degree first, working in reverse chronological order. But if older coursework is more specific to the job, list that first to grab the reviewer’s attention.
23. Remove the dates from your education section once you’re a few years into your career
Unless you’re early in your career, don’t list your graduation dates. The reviewer cares more about whether or not you have the degree than when you earned it. And you don’t want to inadvertently open yourself up to age discrimination , which is an unfortunate reality in some job markets.
24. Highlight honors and achievements, not GPA
If you graduated from college with high honors, absolutely make note of it. Showcase that summa cum laude status, the fact that you were in the honors college at your university, a relevant project you completed, or an award you won. You don’t need to list your GPA —employers don’t care as much about GPA as they do what skills you gained in school.

25. Include continuing or online education
Feel free to include continuing education, professional development coursework, or online courses in your education section, especially if your resume feels a little light on relevant experience.
Best resume tips for showing off your skills
You shouldn't wait until you get an interview to showcase your skills—your resume can and should have a specific section for them. You can also leverage other sections of the document to incorporate what's relevant for the position.
Here are our tips for making a resume that effectively highlights your skills:
26. Don’t forget your skills section
Be sure to add a section that lists all the relevant skills you have for a position—especially those mentioned in the job description. Include technical skills like software and project management tools or specific knowledge of how to perform relevant tasks. Just make sure to skip including skills that everyone is expected to have, like using email or Microsoft Word. Doing so will make you seem less technologically savvy.
27. But don’t only put your skills in your skills section
Your skills section is an easy way for anyone reading your resume to confirm that you have required qualifications, but that shouldn’t be the only place that your important skills appear. Any skill that’s vital to you being hired should also be in your bullet points—where you can show how you’ve used it in the past.
28. Divvy up your skills for readability
If you have lots of skills that would help you with a job but aren’t necessarily in the same category—say, foreign language, software, and leadership skills—try breaking up your skills sections. Below your “Skills” section, add a subsection titled “Language Skills” or “Software Skills,” for example. Again, we’re going for skimmability here!
29. Show—don’t tell—your soft skills
Describing soft skills on a resume often starts to sound like a list of meaningless buzzwords. But being a “strong leader” or an “effective communicator” are important characteristics you want to get across. Think about how you can demonstrate these attributes in your bullet points without actually saying them.

Other resume section tips
Resume sections are not fixed like stone-written texts; they can change according to the job position you're applying for or the requirements listed by the company. Here are some examples of sections you can add—and more tips on writing a resume that stand out:
30. Include relevant certifications and licenses
If you have a certification or license that proves you can do some aspect of the job you’re applying for, include it on your resume. This is especially important if that certification or license is legally required to do the job—for example, in nursing, teaching, or driving jobs.
31. Show some (relevant) personality
Feel free to include an “Interests” section on your resume, but only add those that are relevant to the job. Are you a guitar player with your eye on a music company? Definitely include it. But if you’re considering including your scrapbooking hobby for a software developer job at a healthcare company? Best to leave it out.
32. Beware of interests and activities that could be controversial
Maybe you help raise money for your church on the reg. Or perhaps you’re dedicated to canvassing during political campaigns. Yes, these experiences show a good amount of work ethic or possibly other relevant skills—but they could also open you up to be discriminated against by someone who disagrees with the cause. So weigh your decision to include them carefully.
33. Add awards and achievements—when they’re relevant
Do include awards and accolades you’ve received, even if they’re company-specific awards. Just state what you earned them for, e.g., “Earned Golden Salesperson Award for having the company’s top sales record four quarters in a row.” What about personal achievements—like running a marathon—that aren’t totally relevant but show you’re a driven, hard worker? Consider the best way to include them (and if you should).
Resume tips for navigating employment gaps and other sticky situations
If you're an experienced professional, you might have some tricky information to explain. Job hopping, career gap, and short term jobs are examples of things that can make an applicant feel insecure when drafting resumes.
Is that your situation? Check on these good resume tips to explain sticky situations without jeopardizing your chances to get an interview:
34. Cut the short-term jobs
If you stayed at a (non-temporary) job for only a matter of months, consider eliminating it from your resume to avoid looking like a job hopper. Leaving a particularly short-lived job or two off your resume shouldn’t hurt, as long as you’re honest about your experience if asked in an interview. But if the short-term job is super relevant to this job, consider including it anyway.
35. If you have shorter gaps, be strategic about how you list dates
If you have gaps of a few months in your work history, don’t list the usual start and end dates with months and years for each position. Use years only (2018–2020), or just the number of years or months you worked at each position. Just keep it consistent throughout your resume and don’t lie if asked about gaps during an interview.

36. Explain serial job hopping
If you’ve job-hopped frequently, you can include a succinct reason for leaving next to each position like “company closed,” “layoff due to downsizing,” or “relocated to a new city.” By addressing the gaps, you’ll proactively illustrate the reason for your frequent job movement and make it less of an issue.
37. Explain a long break in jobs
Re-entering the workforce after a long hiatus? This is the perfect opportunity for a summary statement at the top, outlining your best skills and accomplishments. Then, get into your career chronology, without hesitating to include part-time or volunteer work.
38. Be intentional about career gaps
While career gaps are becoming increasingly common, you should still frame them in a way that’s relevant to a future employer, by talking about skills you gained or any professional endeavors you took on. If you didn’t focus on professional development, that’s fine too! But not every employer will appreciate it if you get too cutesy about that section of your resume.
For example, if you took time out of the workforce to raise kids, you might not want to creatively describe this parenting experience on your resume, à la “adeptly managed the growing pile of laundry.” Instead state what you did plainly and include any professional skills you may have grown or activities you may have done.

Tips on resume finishing touches
Writing a good resume alone isn't the only thing that matters. How you save and send it can also determine whether the recruiter will even take a look at it. To wrap things up, here are our resume formatting tips and other suggestions to boost your chances of getting noticed:
39. Ditch “References available upon request”
If a hiring manager is interested in you, they’ll ask you for references—and will assume that you have them. There’s no need to address the obvious (and doing so might even make you look a little out of touch!).
40. Proofread, proofread, proofread
It should go without saying, but fully edit your resume and make sure it’s free and clear of typos. And don’t rely on spell check and grammar check alone—step away for a few hours, then read your resume closely again, and ask family or friends to take a look at it for you.
41. Save it as a PDF or Word document
Unless a job posting specifically requests that you do otherwise, your resume should always be submitted as either a PDF or Word document (.docx not .doc). These are the formats that can be most easily opened and most easily parsed by an ATS.
The choice between the two is up to you (again, unless the company you’re applying to requests one format over the other). If you’re emailing your resume, however, PDFs are a bit more likely to maintain your formatting across different computers and programs.
42. Name your file clearly
Ready to save your resume and send it off? Save it as “Jane Smith Resume” instead of “Resume.” The hiring manager is going to have plenty of “Resumes” on their computer, so make it super easy for them to find what they’re looking for. You can even go a bit further and put the position title in your file name (e.g., “Jane Smith Marketing Analyst Resume).

43. Keep your resume outline fresh
Carve out some time every quarter or so to pull up your resume outline and make some updates. Have you taken on new responsibilities? Learned new skills? Add them. When your resume is updated on a regular basis, you’re always ready to pounce when opportunity presents itself. And even if you’re not job searching, there are plenty of good reasons to keep this document in tip-top shape.

How to Help Your Students Create ATS-Friendly Resumes: A Step-by-Step Guide for Career Coaches
Customers Interviewed by:
A Harvard Business School study found that over 90 percent of employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen and rank candidates. For university career centers, guiding students to craft ATS-friendly resumes is crucial. It’s not just about making a resume look good—it’s about ensuring it gets seen.
Despite best efforts, resumes might be filtered out before a human ever sees them, simply because of formatting issues, missing keywords, or improper file types. This can be incredibly frustrating for both your team and your students, especially when you know they’re perfect for the roles they’re applying for.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to convert resumes into ATS-friendly formats to boost visibility, get students noticed by recruiters, and increase their interview chances. This will help you to better assist your students in navigating the complexities of the modern job market.
How to Make Sure the ATS Can Read Your Resume
Over 97% of Fortune 500 companies rely on ATS to streamline their hiring processes and quickly sort through a vast number of resumes. But how can you ensure that the resumes you help create don’t get lost in the shuffle?
Here are the steps you can take to make sure the ATS can read and rank resumes effectively:
1. Keep the Layout Simple and Clean
ATS systems are not designed to appreciate complex designs. They scan for straightforward text and easily recognizable sections. Here’s how to keep it simple:
- Stick to Standard Fonts: Use readable fonts like Calibri or Cambria. Fancy fonts might look great but can confuse ATS software.
- Use Traditional Section Headers: Terms like “Experience” and “Education” are your safest bets. Creative headers may not be recognized.
- Avoid Graphics and Tables: These can disrupt the ATS’s ability to read the content properly.
Pro Tip: Instead of using a template with multiple columns or graphics, opt for a clean, single-column format that is easier for both ATS and human recruiters to navigate.
2. Choose the Right File Format
Not all file formats work well with ATS. Here’s what you need to know:
- .docx: The most compatible format with ATS systems. It preserves formatting and is easily readable by the software.
- PDF: While many ATS systems can handle PDFs, some might struggle with certain types of PDF formatting. Always double-check compatibility.
Example: Recommend that students use a .docx format whenever possible, as it’s the most universally accepted by ATS systems.
Keep in mind: The format can impact how a resume is parsed by the ATS. For best results, we recommend trying Jobscan’s resume scanner to see if the chosen format is optimized for ATS readability. This tool also highlights any formatting issues that could prevent a resume from being properly scanned and ranked.
3. Integrate Relevant Keywords
ATS systems filter resumes based on keyword matches. If a resume doesn’t include the right keywords , it might be filtered out even if the candidate is qualified. Here’s how to get it right:
- Analyze Job Descriptions: Extract the most important keywords from the job posting. These often include job titles, skills , and specific qualifications.
- Incorporate Keywords Naturally: Make sure the keywords fit seamlessly into the resume rather than stuffing them in awkwardly.
Actionable Tip: Show your students how to match their skills and experiences with the job description. For instance, if the job ad emphasizes “project management,” ensure that term is clearly featured in their resume.
Keywords Matter, But Keep It Real
While incorporating keywords is crucial for getting past ATS filters, it’s equally important to ensure that the resume remains authentic and easy to read . Instead of stuffing keywords in an unnatural way, think about how to integrate them naturally:
- “Project Management” rather than “Managing Projects of Various Scales and Types”
- “Team Leadership” instead of “Leading Groups to Achieve Common Goals”
If you’re looking for guidance on which keywords to include in the resume, Jobscan’s resume scanner is a great tool to use. It evaluates a resume and compares it directly with the job description a student is targeting.
After the scan, Jobscan offers a detailed score along with a report that highlights essential keywords tailored to the specific job, ensuring the resume is optimized for ATS compatibility.
Here’s a snapshot of how the keyword section of the scanner report is presented:
4. Avoid Headers and Footers
Information placed in headers and footers can be missed by ATS systems. Critical details like contact information should always be placed in the main body of the resume. Here’s what to avoid:
- Contact Information: Place this in the main body at the top of the resume.
- Avoid using headers for sections like “Experience” or “Skills.” These should be part of the main content to ensure the ATS reads them.
Quick Fix: Ensure that all important information is placed within the main content area to avoid any chance of it being skipped by the ATS.
5. Standardize Dates and Formatting
ATS systems need consistency, especially when it comes to dates and formatting:
- Use Consistent Date Formats: Whether it’s “MM/YYYY” or “Month YYYY,” keep it the same throughout the resume.
- Stick to Bullet Points for Clarity: Bulleted lists make it easier for ATS to parse information.
Example: Instead of using a mix of date formats like “May 2020” and “05/20,” standardize all dates to one format to avoid any potential confusion.
Remember: Consistency in formatting isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about making sure the ATS reads and ranks the resume accurately.
6. Double-Check with an ATS Tool
Before submitting a resume, it’s essential to run it through an ATS checker. This step ensures that all the hard work put into optimizing the resume doesn’t go to waste:
- Use Jobscan’s Resume Checker: This tool simulates an ATS scan and highlights any issues that could prevent a resume from ranking well.
- Make Adjustments as Needed: Even small tweaks can make a significant difference in how an ATS reads and ranks a resume.
Final Step: Always recommend running the resume through an ATS tool to catch any last-minute issues before sending it out.
Make sure: Jobscan’s resume scanner doesn’t just point out issues—it provides actionable insights on how to fix them. This way, you can ensure that your students’ resumes are in top shape before they land in the hands of a recruiter. Speak to our sales team to learn more.

How to Check Your Resume Against Job Descriptions: Tools & Best Practices
Published on October 4th, 2024
Aligning your resume with the specific job description is more important than ever, both for candidates trying to land their dream jobs and for recruiters looking to streamline the hiring process. The practice of tailoring resumes has become essential, particularly with the rise of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) , which automatically filter out resumes that don't match the job description criteria
For Candidates
Tailoring a resume to match the job description is crucial for candidates who want to stand out from the competition. Most companies today use ATS to filter through the hundreds, or even thousands, of resumes they receive. These systems scan resumes for specific keywords, skills, and job titles that align with the job listing.
Therefore, submitting a general resume for multiple jobs reduces the chances of it passing the ATS filter. By ensuring a resume is tailored specifically to the role, candidates significantly improve their chances of being noticed by recruiters.
When candidates check their resume against a job description using tools like Jobscan or Teal, they can identify missing keywords or areas that need improvement to meet the job's requirements. For example, if the job description repeatedly mentions "project management" but the resume highlights "team leadership" instead, the resume may not rank highly for that position.
Tailoring the language to mirror the job listing increases the chances of the resume passing the ATS and reaching a human recruiter.
For Recruiters
From a recruiter’s perspective, receiving tailored resumes saves time and effort during the screening process. When candidates take the time to align their resume with the job description, recruiters spend less time sifting through unqualified applicants.
This alignment ensures that resumes focus on the relevant skills and experience needed for the job, making it easier for recruiters to shortlist qualified candidates.
An ATS-friendly, tailored resume helps recruiters by filtering candidates who are more likely to meet the job’s core requirements. This drastically reduces the number of irrelevant resumes that recruiters have to review manually. Instead of wasting time on generic submissions, recruiters can focus on applicants who’ve already done the work of matching their qualifications to the specific job posting.
Aligning a resume with the job description is a win-win for both candidates and recruiters. Candidates can increase their chances of landing an interview by checking their resume against the job description , while recruiters benefit from receiving more targeted and qualified applications, speeding up the hiring process. As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, this practice has transformed from a best practice to a necessity.
Why Tailoring a Resume Is Crucial in 2024
In 2024, the role of resume tailoring has taken center stage in the job search process, particularly because of the widespread use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) . These automated systems have become the backbone of modern hiring processes, helping recruiters sift through large volumes of applications quickly and efficiently.
As a result, resumes that are not tailored to match the job description often get filtered out before they even reach human eyes. This underscores why it is essential for candidates to check their resume against job descriptions and ensure their qualifications align with the specific job they're applying for.
For Recruiters: Ensuring Candidates Match Role-Specific Skills and Experience
Recruiters rely heavily on ATS software to streamline the hiring process, particularly for roles that receive hundreds of applications. ATS software scans resumes for specific keywords and phrases related to the job description. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “project manager” with “budgeting” and “team leadership” skills, the ATS will prioritize resumes that include these terms.
This means that if a resume lacks the critical keywords outlined in the job description, even a well-qualified candidate could be overlooked.
By encouraging candidates to tailor their resumes , recruiters can reduce the number of irrelevant applications, ensuring that only those with the right skills and experience pass through the ATS filter. This improves the quality of candidates in the pool and reduces time spent manually reviewing unqualified applicants. Tailored resumes also make it easier for recruiters to compare candidates based on role-specific qualifications, enabling faster and more informed hiring decisions.
For Candidates: Increasing Chances of Passing ATS Filters
For candidates, a one-size-fits-all resume is no longer effective in today’s job market. ATS software is designed to compare a resume to the job description, searching for specific skills, qualifications, and experience.
A generic resume that doesn't reflect the language and skills mentioned in the job listing will likely result in a low "match rate" and may not get past the initial ATS screening.
This is why it’s crucial for job seekers to check their resume against the job description before submitting it.
Tailoring a resume involves identifying key phrases and skills in the job posting and ensuring these elements are mirrored in the resume, but naturally incorporated. Tools like Jobscan and Teal help candidates by comparing their resume with job descriptions and suggesting ways to improve the match rate.
By including relevant keywords and industry-specific jargon, candidates increase their chances of their resume being selected by the ATS and reaching the recruiter.
Moreover, a tailored resume not only helps candidates get past ATS systems but also shows recruiters that the candidate has taken the time to understand the specific role, demonstrating attention to detail and genuine interest in the position
In 2024, tailoring a resume to match the job description is no longer optional—it is a necessity. Candidates who take the extra time to customize their applications for each role they apply to significantly increase their chances of passing ATS systems and getting noticed by recruiters. Similarly, recruiters benefit by receiving resumes that are more relevant to the role, allowing for a more efficient and effective hiring process.
Understanding ATS and Its Role in Modern Hiring
What is ats.
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software that helps companies manage the overwhelming volume of resumes they receive for each job posting. It automates the process of sorting, filtering, and ranking resumes based on specific job requirements, often before a human recruiter sees them. ATS systems were developed to streamline hiring, especially in large organizations that receive hundreds or even thousands of applications for a single position.
ATS works by scanning resumes for specific keywords, such as skills, job titles, and qualifications, that match those in the job description. These systems are essential for recruiters because they help filter out unqualified candidates, saving significant time in the early stages of the recruitment process. However, this also means that candidates must ensure their resume is not only well-written but also optimized for ATS compatibility.
Common ATS Challenges
While ATS systems bring efficiency, they also present challenges, especially for candidates who may not be familiar with how these systems work. Here are some of the most common challenges candidates face when their resumes are processed by ATS software:
- Formatting Errors : ATS software struggles with resumes that contain unconventional formatting, such as tables, images, or headers and footers. If a resume isn’t formatted in a simple, ATS-friendly structure, important information could be overlooked or improperly parsed
- Keyword Mismatches : One of the most common reasons a resume fails to pass an ATS scan is the absence of relevant keywords from the job description. ATS systems rely on these keywords to rank candidates. If your resume does not include the exact skills, certifications, or job titles mentioned in the job posting, you could be filtered out even if you're highly qualified
- File Types : ATS systems often prefer certain file types over others. While modern ATS systems can handle PDFs, some still have difficulty parsing the text correctly. Resumes in .docx format are typically easier for ATS to read
ATS Optimization Tips for Candidates
To ensure that your resume is ATS-friendly and increases your chances of getting noticed by recruiters, it is crucial to follow best practices. Here are some tips that can help candidates optimize their resumes for ATS:
Use Relevant Keywords from the Job Description
One of the most important ways to optimize your resume for ATS is by including relevant keywords. These keywords should mirror the language used in the job description. For example, if the job listing emphasizes “project management” and “budget oversight,” make sure those exact phrases appear in your resume, assuming you have the experience to back them up
Avoid Keyword Stuffing
While it's essential to include relevant keywords, overloading your resume with too many keywords—known as keyword stuffing—can actually harm your chances. Not only does this make your resume difficult for a human recruiter to read, but it may also be flagged by the ATS as an attempt to "game" the system. Instead, focus on integrating keywords naturally into your descriptions of past roles and achievements.
Keep Your Formatting Simple
ATS systems struggle with complex formatting, so it’s important to stick to a clean, simple resume structure. Avoid using tables, images, and elaborate fonts. Stick to standard headings like “Work Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education” to ensure the ATS can parse the information correctly. Additionally, use bullet points and clear, consistent formatting throughout the resume.
Choose the Right File Type
Many ATS systems prefer resumes in .docx format, although some can handle PDFs as well. To maximize your chances of passing the ATS scan, check the job posting or company guidelines for preferred file types. If no preference is mentioned, submitting your resume in .docx format is generally the safest option
By following these optimization tips, candidates can increase their chances of passing through ATS systems and making it to the next stage of the recruitment process. For recruiters, having candidates submit ATS-friendly resumes ensures they receive applications that are closely aligned with the job's requirements, saving time and effort in reviewing resumes manually.
How to Compare Your Resume Against a Job Description (For Candidates)
Tailoring your resume to match a specific job description is one of the most effective ways to improve your chances of getting an interview, especially in a competitive job market where ATS systems are widely used. When you check your resume against the job description using specialized tools, you can ensure that your application aligns closely with what the employer is looking for, both in terms of skills and experience. This process allows candidates to optimize their resumes for both ATS systems and human recruiters, giving them a better chance of standing out.
Step-by-Step Process
Upload Your Resume and Paste the Job Description into Tools The first step to compare your resume against a job description is to use tools like Jobscan , Teal , or CVWolf . These platforms allow you to upload your resume and paste the job description directly into their system. They then analyze the text from both the resume and the job description, looking for keyword matches, formatting issues, and missing skills
- Jobscan , for example, offers a “match rate” score, which indicates how well your resume aligns with the job description. The tool provides detailed feedback on areas where your resume could improve, such as missing keywords or formatting errors.
- Teal and CVWolf also provide similar functions, allowing candidates to tweak their resumes to better match specific job listings, focusing on important areas like skills, work experience, and formatting.
Review Your "Match Rate" and Get Personalized Feedback After running your resume through one of these tools, you’ll receive a “match rate” score. This score is essential because it tells you how closely your resume aligns with the job description, which directly impacts whether it will pass the ATS filter
The tool will also provide personalized feedback, pointing out missing keywords, irrelevant content, or formatting issues that could prevent your resume from being successfully scanned by an ATS.
For example, if a job description mentions “data analysis” several times, but your resume only briefly touches on “data interpretation,” the tool may suggest adding more relevant keyword variations like “data analysis” to boost your match rate.
This targeted feedback helps you identify the gaps between your resume and the job description.
Modify and Optimize Your Resume Based on the Feedback Once you’ve reviewed the feedback, it’s time to optimize your resume. Start by adding any missing hard skills or soft skills that the job description calls for. For example, if the job listing emphasizes “leadership” or “project management,” and those keywords are missing from your resume, integrate them into your experience sections in a natural and meaningful way.
However, be careful to avoid keyword stuffing, as it can make your resume less readable and might even be flagged by the ATS.
Additionally, you may need to adjust the formatting of your resume based on the ATS’s preferences. For example, some ATS systems can struggle to read resumes with complex formatting like tables or columns. Ensure your resume follows simple formatting guidelines, such as using standard headings and consistent font sizes
Important Areas to Focus On
Keywords (Hard and Soft Skills) Keywords are critical for passing ATS scans. Both hard and soft skills listed in the job description should be mirrored in your resume as closely as possible.
Hard skills, such as “data analysis,” “project management,” or “software development,” should be integrated into the experience and skills sections. Soft skills, such as “leadership,” “collaboration,” and “problem-solving,” are equally important, especially for positions that require interpersonal skills.
Remember, the key is to use the same terminology as the job description. For example, if the job description calls for “customer relationship management” experience, use that exact phrase rather than a variation like “client management.” This helps ensure that your resume gets recognized by the ATS
Formatting: Headings and File Types (Word vs. PDF) Formatting can make or break your resume when it comes to ATS systems. Stick to standard resume headings such as “Work Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education” to ensure the ATS can easily parse your information
Avoid fancy layouts, graphics, or tables that could confuse the ATS and result in your resume being misinterpreted or discarded.
As for file types, while many modern ATS systems can read PDFs, some still perform better with .docx files. Check the job listing for any specific requirements regarding file formats, but when in doubt, use a Word document to maximize compatibility with most ATS systems
Adding Measurable Results to Work Experience When tailoring your resume, it’s important to add measurable results to your work experience. Recruiters and ATS systems alike favor resumes that quantify achievements. For example, instead of saying, “Led a team of sales professionals,” enhance this with measurable results like, “Led a team of 10 sales professionals, increasing regional sales by 25% within six months”
This adds credibility and makes your accomplishments stand out, both to the ATS and the recruiter.
By following these steps and focusing on these areas, candidates can significantly increase their chances of passing through ATS systems and getting noticed by hiring managers. Regularly checking your resume against job descriptions with tools like Jobscan ensures that your resume is consistently optimized for every job you apply for, improving your chances of landing an interview.
How Recruiters Can Use Resume Matching Tools
For recruiters, the hiring process can be time-consuming and often overwhelming due to the sheer number of resumes received for each job posting. Incorporating resume matching tools such as Jobscan and Teal into the recruitment workflow is one of the most effective ways to streamline candidate selection and ensure that the most qualified individuals are considered for a role. These tools allow recruiters to quickly compare resumes against specific job descriptions, saving time and improving the quality of their hiring decisions.
How ATS and Resume Matching Tools Help Filter the Best Candidates
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) have become essential in today’s hiring landscape. They automate the process of reviewing resumes, helping recruiters filter out unqualified candidates before a human recruiter even looks at the applications.
ATS tools use algorithms to scan resumes for relevant keywords, skills, experience, and job titles that align with the job description, ensuring that only the most relevant candidates move forward in the hiring process.
For example, Jobscan allows recruiters to upload job descriptions and automatically evaluate incoming resumes to determine their “match rate” based on the alignment of skills and qualifications
This functionality ensures that candidates who have tailored their resumes to the job description, using the correct keywords and relevant experience, are ranked higher by the ATS. Similarly, Teal offers recruiters a quick way to assess whether a candidate’s resume meets the specific requirements of a role, improving the efficiency of the screening process
By using these tools, recruiters can focus on the best candidates without manually reviewing every resume, saving time and reducing the likelihood of overlooking strong applicants due to the sheer volume of submissions. Additionally, automated resume matching ensures that resumes are evaluated based on objective criteria, reducing bias and increasing the fairness of the hiring process.
Why Incorporating These Tools into Hiring Workflows Improves Efficienc y
Incorporating ATS and resume matching tools into the recruitment workflow significantly boosts efficiency. Traditional resume screening is labor-intensive and often results in human error, such as missing key candidates due to fatigue or oversight. With tools like Jobscan and Teal, recruiters can quickly assess hundreds of resumes by checking them against the job description. This ensures that each resume is objectively evaluated based on the specific qualifications needed for the role
Moreover, these tools offer valuable insights that go beyond simple keyword matching. They can provide feedback on the formatting and readability of resumes, ensuring that only properly formatted, ATS-friendly documents are considered
This helps recruiters maintain a streamlined process by reducing the number of non-compliant resumes they have to manually review.
Additionally, by incorporating resume matching tools into their hiring workflows, recruiters can ensure that the candidates moving forward in the process are better suited to the role from the start, which decreases the time spent on unnecessary interviews and follow-ups with unqualified applicants. This efficiency not only saves time but also improves the overall quality of the hiring process, leading to better long-term hires.
Tips for Effective Job Descriptions
A well-crafted job description is the foundation of a successful hiring process. It serves as the primary document that both recruiters and candidates use to assess the suitability of the role. To make the most out of resume matching tools like Jobscan, recruiters should write job descriptions that are clear, detailed, and focused on essential qualifications.
Here are some tips for creating effective job descriptions:
- Use Essential Keywords : The key to ensuring that candidates tailor their resumes to the job is to include the right keywords. These keywords should reflect the critical skills, qualifications, and experience required for the role. Including both hard skills (like "project management" or "data analysis") and soft skills (like "communication" or "teamwork") ensures that the job description attracts a wide range of qualified candidates
- Be Specific About Required Skills and Experience : Vague job descriptions often result in unqualified candidates applying. By clearly specifying the skills and experience needed for the role, recruiters can help candidates understand exactly what is expected and tailor their resumes accordingly. This also helps resume matching tools accurately assess whether a candidate’s resume fits the position
- Incorporate Measurable Requirements : Where possible, include measurable criteria in the job description, such as “3+ years of experience in marketing” or “proven success in increasing sales by 15%.” Measurable requirements help both candidates and recruiters evaluate whether the resume is a good fit for the role
By crafting clear and specific job descriptions, recruiters can encourage candidates to tailor their resumes more effectively, which in turn helps resume matching tools like Jobscan deliver more accurate results. Ultimately, this results in a more efficient, streamlined hiring process that benefits both recruiters and candidates.
In conclusion, resume matching tools provide a crucial advantage in today’s fast-paced hiring environment. For recruiters, these tools enhance the screening process by quickly identifying the most qualified candidates based on job-specific criteria. By writing clear, detailed job descriptions with essential keywords, recruiters can improve the effectiveness of these tools and ensure they receive resumes tailored specifically for the role.

Best Practices for Candidates When Matching Resumes to Job Descriptions
Matching your resume to a specific job description is a critical step in improving your chances of passing through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and catching the eye of recruiters. To make your resume stand out, there are some key best practices that every job seeker should follow. Tailoring your resume not only demonstrates that you’ve taken the time to understand the role but also increases your chances of getting shortlisted for an interview.
Tailoring Tips
Use the Same Language as the Job Description One of the most important strategies when tailoring your resume is to use the same language and phrases as those in the job description. ATS systems are designed to match keywords and phrases from the job description with those in your resume. By using specific terms like “project management” instead of a more general phrase such as “leading teams,” you increase the likelihood that your resume will rank higher in ATS results.
For example, if the job posting mentions “budget management,” ensure that your resume reflects this exact term rather than similar phrases like “financial oversight.” Jobscan and similar tools can help you check your resume against the job description , highlighting any mismatched keywords so you can adjust your wording accordingly. The closer your language mirrors the job posting, the better your chances of passing through ATS and being noticed by recruiters.
Ensure Formatting and File Type Compatibility Another critical aspect of optimizing your resume for ATS is ensuring the right formatting and file type. ATS systems can struggle to read complex formats like tables, graphics, or unusual fonts. Keep your resume layout simple by avoiding columns, images, and fancy fonts. Stick to universally recognized fonts like Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman, and use a clean layout with clear section headings such as “Work Experience” and “Skills”.
When it comes to file types, modern ATS systems can read both Word documents (.docx) and PDFs. However, certain ATS systems perform better with Word files, as PDFs can sometimes cause formatting issues or fail to parse content accurately.
To ensure compatibility, use a Word document when submitting through an ATS, unless the job posting specifies otherwise. Jobscan can also provide feedback on whether your resume format is ATS-friendly, making it easier to avoid common pitfalls.
Additional Tailoring Tips:
- Customize Your Resume for Every Job : It might be tempting to use a one-size-fits-all resume, but this reduces your chances of standing out. Tailor each resume to reflect the unique requirements of the job description.
- Incorporate Both Hard and Soft Skills : Many ATS systems prioritize hard skills, such as “data analysis” or “marketing strategy,” but soft skills like “leadership” or “communication” can also be critical for certain roles. Be sure to include both when relevant.
- Add Measurable Results : When describing your past experiences, focus on quantifiable achievements. For example, “Increased sales by 30% in 12 months” is more impactful than simply listing responsibilities. This not only appeals to human recruiters but also improves your ATS match by including relevant metrics.
By following these best practices, candidates can significantly improve their chances of having their resumes pass through ATS and reach recruiters. The key is to check your resume against the job description carefully and make adjustments that ensure both human readers and ATS systems find your resume compelling and relevant.
In today’s competitive job market, aligning resumes with job descriptions is no longer a mere recommendation; it’s a necessity. Both candidates and recruiters benefit from this alignment. Candidates improve their chances of landing interviews, while recruiters save time by focusing on well-matched applicants. By taking the time to check resumes against job descriptions , job seekers can tailor their applications in a way that speaks directly to the requirements of the role, ensuring their resumes stand out to both ATS systems and human recruiters
The key takeaway for job seekers is the importance of using resume matching tools like Jobscan , Teal HQ , or CVWolf to help optimize their resumes. These tools allow you to assess how closely your resume matches the job description by identifying missing keywords, skills, and other important elements. By regularly checking your resume against job descriptions, you can make sure you’re including the specific phrases and qualifications that will get your resume through ATS filters.
Additionally, tools like the HireQuotient Resume Parser offer deep insights into how your resume performs against job-specific requirements. This tool not only scans for keywords but also analyzes the overall structure and relevance of your experience, helping you better position yourself for success
By leveraging these tools, you increase your chances of landing interviews and ultimately securing the job.
Call to Action for Candidates : Don’t settle for a generic resume. Use these powerful resume matching tools to optimize your resume for every job application. Tailor your language, update your formatting, and continuously improve your match rate to boost your chances of success.
For recruiters, integrating ATS systems and resume matching tools like Jobscan and the HireQuotient Resume Parser into the hiring process offers significant advantages. These tools not only streamline the process by filtering out unqualified candidates but also ensure that only the most relevant resumes are reviewed. This saves time and improves the overall quality of candidates entering the pipeline
The HireQuotient Resume Parser , for example, is a valuable asset for recruiters because it goes beyond basic keyword matching. It analyzes a candidate’s full qualifications, allowing for more informed decision-making early in the process. By utilizing these tools, recruiters can focus on attracting candidates who are truly suited for the position, which leads to better hiring outcomes and a more efficient recruitment process.
Call to Action for Recruiters : To maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of your hiring process, start incorporating ATS and resume matching tools like Jobscan and HireQuotient into your workflow. These tools will help you identify the best candidates faster and streamline your recruitment process for better results.
In summary, by aligning resumes with job descriptions, both candidates and recruiters stand to gain immensely. For candidates, it’s about improving their chances of getting noticed in a crowded market. For recruiters, it’s about finding the right match more efficiently. With powerful tools available, there's no excuse not to take advantage of the technology designed to improve this critical aspect of the hiring process.

The Perfect Resume Structure
Not sure how to structure your resume?
Here’s our tried-and-tested resume layout :
- Choose the right resume format or pick a template. If you’re formatting your resume yourself, follow the reverse-chronological format and make sure to follow the right layout rules. Alternatively, you can use one of our premade resume templates and not have to worry about formatting your resume one bit.
- Add relevant contact details and make sure they’re mistake-free. You shouldn’t be missing information such as your full name and job title, e-mail address, and where you’re based. Optionally, you can also include some relevant social media profiles, such as your LinkedIn.
- Include a resume summary or a resume objective. Done right, a resume summary will show the hiring manager you’re a relevant candidate from the get-go and have them read the rest of your resume.
- List your work experience, placing special focus on your achievements. Your work experience becomes more meaningful if you include your achievements in your past roles and manage to make them quantifiable.
- Mention your top soft and hard skills. List any skills you have that are relevant to the job you’re applying for in a seperate section.
- Keep your education section short and concise. Unless you’re an entry-level candidate with little-to-no work experience, keep your education section short and to the point.
- Leverage optional sections like “Languages,” “Certifications,” or “Hobbies and Interests.” Fill up the rest of your resume space with optional sections that can highlight your strengths and qualifications as a candidate (e.g. foreign languages you speak, certifications you’ve obtained over the years, or your hobbies and interests).
3 Examples of Resume Formats
#1. reverse chronological resume format.
This resume format highlights your experience and key professional achievements by listing your latest position and acquired skills first. It’s the most popular resume format among recruiters and the one we advise job seekers to use in 99% of cases.
#2. Functional Resume Format
A functional resume , also known as the skill-based resume, is a resume format that focuses on your professional skill test as opposed to work experience. You’re better off using a functional resume if you’re a recent graduate with no work experience, if you’re switching careers, or if you have a long employment gap .
#3. Hybrid Resume Format
A combination resume combines the two traditional resume formats: the reverse-chronological resume and the functional resume.
As such, this format places emphasis on a candidate’s skills and work experience.

F1 season resumes in Austin with McLaren’s Lando Norris in hot pursuit of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Verstappen and Red Bull are in retreat as the Formula 1 season resumes in Texas.
The series returns from a month-long autumn break at the United States Grand Prix with the Dutch driver still leading the championship, but his car has gone backward in terms of performance and results while McLaren’s Lando Norris pulls ever closer in the title chase.
The last time on the track, Verstappen finished second in Singapore, only to watch Norris drive off in the distance and win by a whopping 21 seconds . It was the kind of gap Verstappen crushed the field with all last season.
“After Singapore I just wanted to keep going. We were in a good rhythm. I think we still are in a good rhythm and have been for quite a while,” Norris said.
Verstappen still has a 52-point lead as he chases his fourth consecutive championship with six races left. That race gap to Norris in Singapore was worrisome, and raised more pressure on Red Bull to reverse its slide, or at least find something that can keep Norris at bay.
The race weekend at the Circuit of the Americas has a lot of points on offer that Norris can snatch if Red Bull continues to struggle. Saturday features the first sprint race since Austria in June.
Verstappen has won all three previous sprint races this season and has won the main race in Austin the last three years. But he hasn’t won this season since the Spanish Grand Prix on June 23 and has earned just three podium finishes in that span. Verstappen at times has described his once dominant car as “undrivable” and a “monster.”
McLaren has already overtaken Red Bull to seize the lead in the team constructors’ championship, and another win on a track where Verstappen has been dominant would be a dagger.
Red Bull is bringing a package of upgrades it hopes will get its once dominant car back to the front.
Verstappen stopped short of calling it a make-or-break race weekend in the title chase, but teammate Sergio Perez called it “crucial” for Red Bull.
“Of course I would like to win the championship, but it also needs to be realistic. We’ll try to do everything we can, and if we are competitive enough then we can do that,” Verstappen said.
“If we are not, then we’re not. It’s as simple as that, life goes on. It’s not like if you don’t win it’s a big tragedy,” Verstappen said.
Norris sounded confident McLaren will keep the pressure on Red Bull.
“I know people ask every weekend if this is a weekend that’s going to change something. It can go my way. It can go Max’s way,” Norris said. “But I’m happy with what we’re doing as a team and how we’re working together. … It’s not easy. I need more than just me first and Max second.”
Mercedes driver George Russell predicted Norris to win the title based on current form, despite the points gap.
“I think Lando can absolutely win this championship and I would probably say he’s (the) favorite to do so with their form right now comparing with Red Bull,” Russell said.
Verstappen said he will continue to give short answers in official race news conferences after he was punished by the sport’s governing body FIA for swearing in Singapore.
“I prefer of course to talk less, so it’s fine anyway for me.” Verstappen told reporters gathered Thursday on the porch of the Red Bull team hospitality tent.
Russell, who is a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, said the drivers will likely issue a statement on the matter next week ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
“We don’t want to be taking away the heat of the moment emotions that drivers show during a race,” Russell said.
“For the drivers, it is very challenging when you have a microphone, you’re talking with your team, you’re in the middle of battle,” Russell said. “But if it’s an environment like this maybe we have a duty to be conscious of our words.”
Smooth surface
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were disqualified from their second and sixth place finishes in Austin last year when their cars failed post-race inspections for worn down skid blocks.
Mercedes blamed the problem in part on the bumps around COTA, which other drivers, notably Verstappen, had complained as not worthy of an F1 venue.
The track has since then been completely resurfaced. And it has already seen some racing. The Lone Star Le Mans World Endurance Championship race last month broke in the new surface.
Austin is the first stop in a triple-header of races, with Mexico City and Sao Paolo in Brazil the next two weeks. … Williams driver Alex Albon will be racing his 100th grand prix. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso will be starting his 397th. … Verstappen won 19 races in 2023. … Five drivers have won multiple times in 2024.

FEMA resumes door-to-door visits in North Carolina after threats tied to disinformation
FEMA’s administrator says disaster workers have resumed door-to-door visits during their hurricane-recovery efforts in North Carolina, after a temporary suspension amid threat reports. She called on people to stop spreading falsehoods about their efforts.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Federal disaster personnel have resumed door-to-door visits as part of their hurricane-recovery work in North Carolina, an effort temporarily suspended amid threats that prompted officials to condemn the spread of disinformation.
Over the weekend, reports emerged that workers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency could be targeted by militia as the government responds to Hurricane Helene . A sheriff’s office said Monday that one man was arrested during an investigation, but that the suspect acted alone.
FEMA made operational changes to keep personnel safe “out of an abundance of caution,” agency Administrator Deanne Criswell said at a briefing Tuesday. FEMA workers were back in the field Monday, accompanied by Criswell, and she said disaster-assistance teams helping survivors apply for FEMA aid as well as state and local assistance will continue to go door-to-door. She emphasized that the agency isn’t going anywhere.
“The federal family has been here working side by side with the state since Day One. These are people who put their lives on hold to help those who have lost everything,” Criswell said. “So let me be clear. I take these threats seriously.”
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said he directed the state’s Department of Public Safety to coordinate law enforcement assistance for FEMA and other responders. He stressed the damage that internet rumors and falsehoods were causing and said officials may never know how many people won’t apply for assistance because of bad information.
“There’s still a persistent and dangerous flow of misinformation about recovery efforts in western North Carolina that can lead to threats and intimidation, breeds confusion and demoralizes storm survivors and response workers alike,” Cooper said at the briefing. “If you’re participating in spreading this stuff, stop it. Whatever your aim is, the people you are really hurting are those in western North Carolina who need help.”
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call Saturday about a man with an assault rifle who made a comment “about possibly harming” FEMA employees working in the hard-hit areas of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock in the North Carolina mountains. A man was charged with “going armed to the terror of the public,” a misdemeanor, and was released after posting bond.
The sheriff’s office said it received initial reports that a “truckload of militia” was involved in the threat, but further investigation determined the man acted alone.
FEMA has faced rampant disinformation about its response to Helene, which hit Florida on Sept. 26 before heading north and leaving a trail of destruction across six states.
Asked what might be fueling disinformation, Cooper said social media has become more extreme, but he also pointed to politics.
“This is happening in the middle of an election where candidates are using people’s misery to sow chaos for their own political objectives — and it’s wrong,” he said.
Former President Donald Trump and his allies have seized on the storm’s aftermath to spread false information about the Biden administration’s response in the final weeks before the election. Their debunked claims include false statements that victims can only receive $750 in aid, that emergency response funds were diverted to immigrants, that people accepting federal relief money could see their land seized and that FEMA is halting trucks full of supplies.
Helene decimated remote towns throughout Appalachia , left millions without power, knocked out cellular service and killed at least 246 people. It was the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Katrina in 2005.
Terrie Daughtry, a volunteer handling therapy dogs Tuesday at a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Asheville, said threats and misinformation — including the militia rumors — made her feel unsafe for the first time in several trips to volunteer at disaster sites.
“I’m not coming to risk my life with it all, to be shot or hurt or trampled because of lunacy,” said Daughtry, who volunteers with Therapy Dogs International. She said she previously traveled to help in the aftermath of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, floods in Virginia and tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama.
She and another volunteer have been using their therapy dogs to calm people waiting in line to make FEMA claims. They hand out candy, let people pet the dogs and talk to people about their experiences.
Despite the extra stress from the “absolutely ridiculous” threats and misinformation, Daughtry said she’s seen some amazing moments of human spirit. At one point on Monday, someone in line started playing a guitar and singing about having no water, she said. Eventually, the whole line sang along.
“These are special people. They’re singing in horrible adversity,” she said. “It made me tear up being there and it’s making me tear up now.”

In the day's other news: Israel resumed punishing airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and across Central and Southern Lebanon.
More than 130 strikes targeted what Israel says were Hezbollah operatives and locations. Israel's military also said more than 90 Hezbollah rockets were fired into Northern Israel today.
Special correspondent Leila Molana-Allen reports.
Leila Molana-Allen:
Slim hopes for a cease-fire dashed.
Yesterday, Lebanon's caretaker prime minister said he'd had guarantees from the United States that the bombing of Beirut would cease. Today's skyline told a different story. After a few days of relief, the bombardment of the capital's southern suburbs resumed, heavier than ever.
There's been a huge increase in the intensity and frequency of the airstrikes here, and now much of these southern suburbs are devastated. It's one of the most heavily populated areas around Beirut. And that means that tens of thousands of people have been removed from their homes.
In the southern city of Nabatiyeh, a meeting of the mayor and his municipal workers became this region's next graveyard. The target of the Israeli strike here was the city's crisis Management hub, meeting to organize and distribute aid to displaced families.
Mayor Ahmad Khalil and his team were all killed. The death toll is 16 and rising. More than 50 were injured. As volunteer first responders tried to save their colleagues, they sent out desperate voice messages.
Man (through interpreter):
The mayor's inside. Everyone's inside. No one could survive this. They're all dead.
When the IDF told Nabatiyeh's residents to leave earlier this month, Ahmad and his team refused. They felt they had to stay to help the thousands of Lebanese still stuck and increasingly cut off by the bombardment in towns and villages across the governorate.
Dania is one of a group of mothers in Beirut raising funds to help provide essentials to the more than 1.2 million Lebanese made homeless by this war. She was coordinating with Ahmad's team.
Dania Dandashli, Volunteer:
They specifically said they wanted milk and baby diapers. Two hours later, we got the news that there was a raid on the municipality that was organizing all the relief efforts, and we learned that the person that we were on the phone with was killed.
Many here from across Lebanon's political and religious spectrum increasingly view this as a war waged against them, not just by Israel, but by its main backer, the United States, including some of its own citizens.
Dania Dandashli:
They had every opportunity to have stopped this war, and they refused. They refused. They continued to send weapons to Israel with taxes I'm paying for, because I am an American citizen. I mean, the carte blanche that the Biden administration is giving the Israelis, what it means is death, what it means is killing, what it means is destruction.
It means destroying villages, destroying homes, destroying our trust in the world. We have lost trust in the world.
And every day, as the world watches, more death and destruction unfolds here.
