Most of our support is based on using Microsoft Word. If you plan to use LaTeX for your thesis or dissertation we recommend starting with  a LaTeX template designed to meet Rackham’s requirements.

Requesting Dissertations or Theses

You can request dissertations and theses from other libraries using the library's interlibrary loan services. There are no fees for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, or staff to place these requests.

Step-by-Step Instructions for requesting dissertations or theses through ILLiad

Some libraries will lend hardcopy or microfilm copies of dissertations or theses. These items can be difficult to obtain depending on the policies of the lending institution or library, but follow these steps to request the physical item:

1. Log into  ILLiad  at  https://ill.lib.umich.edu/illiad/illiad.dll?

2. Click on the Thesis/Dissertation  link next to  Place a Request  at the top of the ILLiad Form

3. Fill out the form as completely as possible. Make sure to fill out required fields.

4. When you have completed the form, click the "Submit Request" button. 

  • Click on All Requests  in the left sidebar to check the status of your request

5. You will be notified by email when your request is available.

  • Click on Completed Requests in the left sidebar to view all of your completed requests.

A bubble chart like the one below can help you brainstorm different ways that your topic can be narrowed or broadened.

Narrowing Your Topic

Sometimes a topic that seems like the right size for your paper can seem way too big after you’ve learned a little more about it.   When this happens, you need to narrow the focus of your paper.   You can do this by considering different ways to restrict your paper topic.

Some of the ways you can limit your paper topic are by:

  • Who – population or group (e.g., college students; women; Asian Americans)
  • What – discipline or focus (e.g., sociological or historical perspective)
  • Where – geographic location (e.g., United States; universities; small towns)
  • When – time period or era (19 th century; Renaissance; Vietnam War)
  • Why – why is the topic important? (to the class, to the field, or to you)

For example, a paper about alcohol use would be very broad.   But a paper about reasons for alcohol abuse by female college students in the United States during the 1990s might be just right.

Goldilocker: An Online Tool For Narrowing Your Topic

The University of Michigan Library Learning and Teaching Team has created an online tool to help you narrow your topic.  The Goldilocker tool can be used as a stand alone/personal exercise to articulate your topic in a much more narrow fashion.  It can also be used in conjunction with University of Michigan courses and classes outside of the university.  

Broadening Your Topic

Sometimes you will find that your topic is too narrow - there is not enough published on your topic.  When this happens, you can try to broaden your topic.  There are a couple of strategies you can try when broadening your topic.

One strategy is to choose less specific terms for your search, e.g., standardized tests instead of SATs, or performance-enhancing drugs instead of anabolic steroids.

Another strategy is to broaden your topic by changing or removing limits or filters from your topic:

  • Who - population or group (e.g., instead of college students, choose a broader section of the population)
  • What  - discipline or focus (e.g., instead of choosing a sociological perspective, look at a number of perspectives)
  • Where  - geographic location (e.g., instead of Michigan, choose United States)
  • When  - time period or era (e.g., instead of 1984, choose 1980s or 20th century)

For example, a paper about alcohol use by college students at the University of Michigan in 1984 might be too narrow of a focus.  But a paper about alcohol use by college students in the 1980s might be just right.

Karen E. Smith is a fellow of the American Math Society, and a member of the National Academy of Science as well as the American Academy of Arts and Science. She has been a professor at the University of Michigan since 1996. She spent considerable time at MIT as a Moore Instructor and Assistant Professor, and still regularly spends time at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.

At Michigan, Professor Smith now serves as department chair. Previously, she was heavily involved in the graduate program, serving as Doctoral Committee chair and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies for close to two decades. She is still actively involved in helping graduate students explore non-academic careers, for example, through the Erdös Institute .

Smith’s mathematical work is in algebra, particularly algebraic geometry and prime characteristic commutative algebra. See Smith’s research .

Working with students and postdocs is her favorite part of the job.

Master's Thesis

The master's thesis is an original work that is creative, scholarly, and based on independent research. Theses usually include a literature review to delineate a problem or gap in knowledge, statement of objectives, formulation of hypotheses, explanation of methods, collection, and analysis of data, report of results, and discussion of conclusions. Results of a thesis should be publishable in a peer-reviewed journal.

Digital Dissertations through U-M Library Catalog Search

The U-M Library provides access to several databases that house dissertations.

  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses @ University of Michigan  describes most dissertations filed at University of Michigan, with full text for most since 1990.
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses @ CIC Institutions  describes dissertations and some master theses filed at CIC / Big Ten universities , with full text for most since 1997.
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses provides descriptions, sometimes with full text, of doctoral dissertations & master theses from US, UK, Canada, Ireland, etc.

Dissertations Not on Campus

  • If you need to consult a dissertation that was not produced at U-M, try requesting it through interlibrary loan .
  • For more information, contact the University Library Interlibrary Loan Office .
  • Dissertations may be purchased from ProQuest directly on the  Dissertation Express website.

Enrolling in Master's Thesis

Review our  Guide to Enrolling in Master's Thesis  for further information on how to start. Students should follow their individual program policies and procedures in order to successfully complete their program in a timely manner. Frequent communication with your committee members is essential. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of all relevant deadlines and to plan accordingly.  Deadlines cannot be altered and missing one will delay your graduation.

Archiving Master’s Thesis

The resources below will help you format your thesis in accordance with university guidelines and archive your final thesis upon successful defense.

The format check/archiving process is required in order to release your final thesis grade. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of all relevant deadlines and to plan accordingly. Individual department deadlines to defend may be different from the University's deadline to submit your defended thesis for the format check/archiving process.
