** Take the time to read all the questions in the examination paper during exam paper checking before starting to answer the questions.

Tips to score Kimia Kertas 2 1. Answer according to the needs of questions. 2. Be familiar with the command words. 3. Answers must be simple and precise. 4. Do not do the SILLY MISTAKES.

Essay Questions [Experiment Description]: For the question involved description of experiment, the following matters must be attached: (a) Name of reactants. [for organic compounds, particular isomer must be stated] (b) Quantity of products. E.: 50 cm 3 , 100 cm 3 , 1 g, 5 g, 15 cm of magnesium ribbon ......[depends on apparatus / container used, do not use the word a little, much, many, a few] (c) State of reactants. E.: Calcium carbonate powder, chips, pieces, ribbon [for solid] Solution ...... concentration (1 mol dm-3, 2 mol dm-3/ concentrated) [for solution] (d) Suitable container. E.: conical flask, beaker, basin, test tube (maximum volume: 20 cm 3 total volume of reactants  12 cm 3 ), boiling tube (maximum volume: 50 cm 3  total volume of reactants  40 cm 3 ), crucible ...... (e) Procedure of experiment. [Must use the verb to show how you carry out the experiment. E. Pour, add, flow, place, ... Do not use the word test...] (f) Observation. E.: The mixture glows, ‘pop’ sound is heard, small explosion occurs, colour change & physical state of product. (g) Balanced overall chemical equation / ionic equation / half equation if required. (h) Calculation. [Use unknown in the substitution / calculation.] (i) Graph. [Graph sketching] (j) Conclusion.

Underline the keyword and the command word in the question and read the question again after writing 5 lines of answer.

ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS

Example 1: Diagram 8 shows a pie chart which containing the percentages of ions present in sea water.

(a) Salt consists of the combination between positive ion and negative ion. Based on the information in Diagram 8, (i) suggest two salts that are present in the sea water other than common salt, NaCl. Describe a chemical test to verify one anion presents in the suggested salt. [6 marks]

(ii) suggest chemical substances that can be used to produce insoluble magnesium salt and insoluble sulphate salt using precipitation method. Write the ionic equations involved. [4 marks]

(b) Describe an experiment to prepare common salt, NaCl in a school laboratory using suitable acid and alkali. [10 marks]

Example 4: Diagram below shows a conversion between Ayu and Ahmad.

(a) Based on the situation in the given diagram, explain why the pH values of Acid A and Acid B are different. [4 marks]

(b) The following diagram shows zinc carbonate is added to hydrochloric acid. The mixture is stirred and filtered.

Write the chemical equation for the reaction between zinc carbonate and hydrochloric acid. Calculate the mass of unreacted zinc carbonate. [Relative atomic mass: Zn = 65; C = 12; O = 16; H = 1; Cl = 35] [6 marks]

(c) An experiment is carried out to study the acidic properties and electrical conductivity of solutions A and B. Solutions A and B are the mixture of glacial ethanoic acid with two different solvents, solvents X and Y. Solution A: Glacial ethanoic acid + Solvent X Solution B: Glacial ethanoic acid + Solvent Y The diagram below shows the observation for two sets of the experiment.

Based on the given diagram, identify solvent X and solvent Y. Explain why there are differences in the observations. Write the chemical equation for the reaction occurs in Set I. [10 marks]

(ii) Write a chemical equation for the reaction that occurs in Set I and calculate the maximum volume of hydrogen gas produced at room condition. [Molar volume of gas at room condition = 24 dm 3 mol-1] [4 marks]

Example 3: Catalyst and size of reactants can also affect the rate of reaction between acid and zinc. Choose one of these two factors and describe an experiment to show how this factor affects the rate of reaction. [10 marks]

PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

Example 1: Diagram 8 and Diagram 8 show electron arrangement of atoms for two elements in Group 17 in Periodic Table of Elements.

Diagram 8 Diagram 8. (a) Based on Diagram 8: (i) Write electron arrangment for atom of the element and name the element. [2 marks] (ii) Write chemical equation for the reaction between the element and sodium hydroxide. [3 marks]

(b) Compare attractive force between nucleus and valence electrons in the atoms of Diagram 8. and Diagram 8 and write the reactivity of each element. [6 marks]

(c) Another element of Group 17 is a black solid. Predict its reactivity in the reaction between sodium hydroxide with the element in Diagram 8. [1 mark]

Example 1: Diagram 7 shows apparatus set-up and observation of substances L and M when heated in water bath. Substances L and M are two different types of compounds. Apparatus Set-up Observation 1. White solid of substance L melts after 10 minutes heated

(b) Ammonia is a covalent compound. Ammonia gas is used as coolant in a refrigerator because ammonia is easily changed to liquid state when pressure is applied. Ammonia gas can be prepared through reaction between nitrogen gas and hydrogen gas. (i) Write the chemical equation for the preparation of ammonia. [2 marks]

(ii) 600 cm 3 of nitrogen gas reacts with 600 cm 3 of hydrogen gas at room conditions. Determine which reactant is used in excess. Calculate the maximum volume of ammonia produced from the reaction. [1 mole of ammonia gas occupies 24 dm 3 at room conditions] [4 marks]

(c) Diagram 7 shows the electron arrangements of compound A and compound B.

Diagram 7. Element R can react with element P and element Q to form compound A and compound B. Referring to Diagram 7, determine the type of bonding in compound A and compound B, then explain the formation of the compounds. [10 marks]

Tips for spm chemistry and physics, 48 comments:.

hye.. in chemistry section B n C.. could i write in point form but complete sentence.. i mean not in paragraph.. thanks

Actually, you can answer in point form, even if not in full sentence, as long as your answer is clear and complete. But if your paper is marked by some inexperienced examiner, they may deduct your marks because they are not sure what to do. So, to be safe, always answer in paragraph form. The same applies to Physics and Biology. But for Sejarah, you must answer in paragraph form, otherwise half of the marks you scored for the question will be deducted.

Hi, for section B/C in SPM chemistry paper 2, if the question asking you to describe a laboratory experiment( labelled diagram, procedure, half equations ), is it alright to answer the procedure in point form ?

also, what is operational definition in chemistry paper 3? and in paper 3, when recording the readings such as temperature or volume of gas etc, how may decimal places is needed? as I got two reference books, one of the model paper answer is 1 decimal place, while another one is two decimal places

When writing the procedure, you can use point form, in fact it is better to do so (this applies to both Paper 2 Section B/C and Paper 3 Design Experiment). But you must write the procedure in complete sentences. You should write the description of experiment similar to PEKA report. For all other sections, it is advisable to write in paragraph form, not point form. As for the readings in Paper 3, as I mentioned, the number of decimal places should be equal to half of the smallest scale division of the measuring instrument. For thermometer, the smallest division of scale is 1 C , so you should record the reading to the nearest 0.5 C , so 1 decimal place. For burette, the smallest division of scale is 0.1 cm3 , so you should record the reading to the nearest 0.05 cm3 , so 2 decimal places. The same applies to other instruments. Note that some reference books are wrong. As for the operational definition, it really depends on the question, but usually you have to relate it to the responding variable of experiment.

For the apparatus and materials, it is advisable to write them together and do not separate them. This is because if you separate them and you do not classify them correctly, marks can be deducted.

for the physics' reference book, which is more better? Essential,longman or the oxford one?

For physics, the best reference book is Success Physics SPM by Oxford Fajar.

I am weak at form 4 topics for chemistry. I try to read reference book but I still don't understand. I also dont have anyone to teach me for this weekend. How?

You have to understand the experiments and not just memorise them. Once you have understood, it will be easy for you to remember. I have not heard of anything about the new format, can you give me more details about the new format?

Do you happen to know what the minimum mark for an A+ is for both chemistry and physics? Is it confirmed to be at 90 each year?

The minimum A+ mark for every SPM subject changes every year based on the graph of the candidates' performance. For Chemistry and Physics, the minimum A+ mark is usually around 75 to 85.

If i am resitting for my science papers do i have to go through the new paper 3 format?????

Yes, the paper 3 that you are going to take will be based on the new format.

What would happen if I didn't write the unit for the calculation. Is there's no mark at all?

You don't have to write the unit in the calculation, you only have to write it for the final answer. If you do not write the unit for the final answer, 1 mark will be deducted.

Hi! So, I'm a 2016 SPM candidate and experiments are compulsory for the 3 science subjects. Any tips on how I can conduct a good experiment? I've conducted about 4 experiments now but the end results were not as good as I thought. In 1 experiment in chemistry, the data that I obtained for the mass of oxygen is negative. I'm frustrated with these results and I'm worried if I can't get enough marks to make me get even an A. Any tips?

I found it difficult to understand those physics concept like Archimedes principle and so on.. Does do more exercises really help or there is more way? SPM gonna reach soon and Im super duper depressed. Hope that you can help! Thanks!

Hi paper 3 will be the old format for 2015?

The Ministry of Education initially planned to use the new format for SPM 2015, but they later changed their mind and decided to postpone it to SPM 2016. So, SPM 2015 will be based on the old format.

hi,,, your tips are very useful thank u. i have an enquiry... in chemistry paper 3, how many marks will be deducted if an apparatus is wrongly used? for example... for the experiment : heat of neutralisation, where plastic cups must be used... if i used conical flask... is my whole experimental framework considered wrong? your reply is kindly awaited.

I think you will be deducted 2 marks, 1 for Materials & Apparatus and 1 for Procedure.

Daniel, should we momorise the image formed by the concave mirror and convex mirror or not in spm physics form 4 chapter 5?

You have to know them, but you should not memorise them. If you understand how light travels when it passes through concave and convex mirror, you would be able to construct the image yourself.

May I ask a silly question? Do u revise based on those so- called tips? I mean like focus more on those spotted ones.

No, I never trusted those tips because there is no way to know whether they are accurate or not. I always study everything to be on the safe side.

If my responding variable is wrong in section b , how many marks will be deducted ?

You will usually be deducted 1 mark for that.

Is it necessary to add the volume and mol of a solution in describing test question or just straight away tell , put a solution into a test tube and test it with litmus paper and so on? what type of question when it is really necessary to add the volume and mol of a solution ?? thanks for the tips by the way

When describing a chemical test or an experiment, you have to state the volume and concentration of every solution used.

Are you sure the decimal place for paper 3 is half of the smallest scale? I see pass year spm skema the decimal place for a normal thermometer(smallest scale 0.1celcius) is one decimal only. Based on what you say it should be 2 decimal. In my SPM Biology and Physics I did what you say. Am I going to get zero mark on there and the tabulation of data?

The correct number of decimal places for thermometer readings depends on the subject. For SPM Chemistry, it should be 2 decimal places. For SPM Physics, it should be 1 decimal place. I have mentioned this in the tips above. If you make a mistake in this for Chemistry or Physics, you will be deducted 1 mark. If you repeat the same mistake in the tabulation of data, you will not be deducted any more marks because there is 'error carried forward'. For SPM Biology, it does not really matter whether it is 1 or 2 decimal places. Either way is acceptable.

For chemistry paper 3 .part 2 . If they've given an example/diagram. They asked to plan an experiment. Must I follow the way they did in the example? Can I use another experiment?

Hello I want to ask a question.. where did you hear the news about the paper 3 format change for 2018 onwards from? Is it confirmed? Cause im taking spm 2018 and I did not know there was a change in format?

Previously, the Ministry of Education announced that the format for Paper 3 would be changed in SPM 2015. Later, they delayed it to SPM 2016. Eventually, they delayed that once again, but without specifying the year. It is possible that the change may be implemented in SPM 2018, but we can't be sure about that now. This will be confirmed only in year 2018.

Have you ever wondered how those people predict what will come out in SPM? Do you think they have some "insider information" ?

Leaking question is a criminal offence , so it is highly unlikely they would do that.

Then how on earth did they predict the questions with such accuracy?

They actually analyse SPM Trial Question of all states, as well as past year questions. From there, they try to come out with an educated guess on what is going to come out in exam.

If you had look into the thick book of "SPM TIPS", there will be some sample questions that it said is going to appear in the real exam.

But don't be surprised, those questions are nothing but some SPM Trial Questions. They actually do this for good reason.

SPM Chemistry is a subject that is offered to students in Malaysia who are in their final year of secondary school. The SPM Chemistry examination is one of the most important examinations that Malaysian students take, as it is used to determine their eligibility for entry into tertiary institutions, as well as for job opportunities.T he SPM Chemistry examination is divided into two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper, while Paper 2 consists of structured and essay questions. Paper 1 consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that are worth a total of 50 marks. The questions cover a range of topics, including experimental chemistry, periodic table, chemical bonds, chemical calculations, chemical reactions, and acids and bases. Paper 2 consists of three sections. Section A consists of structured questions, which require students to apply their knowledge to solve problems. Section B consists of essay questions, which require students to write detailed responses to questions. Section C consists of one essay question that is worth a total of 25 marks. The SPM Chemistry examination is graded on a scale of A+ to G. Students who obtain a grade of A+ to C are considered to have passed the examination, while students who obtain a grade of D to G are considered to have failed the examination. In preparation for the SPM Chemistry examination, students are encouraged to attend classes and tutorials, participate in laboratory experiments, and complete past-year examination papers. They are also advised to read widely and revise their notes regularly. Overall, the SPM Chemistry examination is a challenging yet important examination that tests students' knowledge and understanding of chemistry.
