The King’s community is dedicated to the service of society. King’s Strategic Vision 2029 sets out our vision for the future, shaped around five priority areas: educate to inspire and improve; research to inform and innovate; serve to shape and transform; a civic university at the heart of London; and an international community that services the world. Our ambitious Education Strategy sets out the actions that we must take to transform how we teach, how and where our students learn and how we support them during their time with us.

We are excited to be recruiting to the role of Senior Library Assistant (Research Support) at a time when Open Research has never been more important. Our Open Research team is responsible for working with King’s researchers in an exciting, complex, and fast-moving area. The team works to support the curation and dissemination of scholarly outputs – support for open access publishing, REF, research data management, and copyright; alongside the provision of an interlending service and wide range of subscription-based library resources.

Libraries & Collections comprises four departments: Education & Learning, Research & Impact, Service Design & Delivery, along with Business Operations. We are part of the Students & Education Directorate, which manages the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond.

About the role

Open Research is an innovative and growing area of service provision. Senior Library Assistants within the Research Support wing of the team provide support to King’s researchers in curating and disseminating their scholarly outputs to a wide audience.

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to work within open research, who wish to utilise their skills in understanding, organising, and explaining complex information. This is an opportunity to grow skills in navigating the scholarly publishing landscape and helping to educate King’s research community about our services - supporting them with achieving impacts with their research findings.

We encourage applications from candidates who have experience from both within and outside of the higher education sector where they can demonstrate the skills needed to succeed in this role.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract if successful.

All grade 4 staff are assigned a placement brief within a particular team but may be moved across to a different placement brief elsewhere within Libraries & Collections in order to support service needs or your development.

All Libraries & Collections staff are encouraged to take responsibility for their own performance and development, through agreeing clear objectives, maintaining professional awareness, participating in professional networks, and reflecting on own performance. We expect all colleagues to role-model a positive, proactive, flexible, and committed approach that encourages others.

You will be required to participate in frontline services as required, including contributing towards a rota for evening and weekend working.

The King's Careers Blog

We're here to help you, whether you are in the discover, focus or action phase of your career journey., student placements in their own words: my application process.

Image of Gokce

Hi everyone, I am a second-year International Management student at King’s College London. As a part of my degree, in my third year, I am given the opportunity to either study abroad as an exchange student or pursue a year-long work placement. Wanting to apply my knowledge in the real world, I decided to undertake a year-long work placement in the UK.

Starting university, I was unsure of which area I wanted to pursue a career in. During my first year, I attended a wide range of events King’s organised for students -ranging from panel events with big firms to workshops to enhance my skills. All of these helped me explore my interests, and decide where I wanted to start my career. I came to realise that I am interested in finance and consulting because I derive the satisfaction of helping companies operate more efficiently. I am also intrigued by how technology has begun shaping our world.

At the start of October 2019, I had a few main companies in mind that I wanted to apply to before I started. As mentioned previously, I was focusing on researching the roles they offered especially in the financial or consulting sector. With these companies in mind, I booked an appointment with a careers consultant at King’s, and a few days later was able to have a one-on-one meeting with them. During the meeting, I explained what my goals were, and they gave me a lot of feedback on how to improve my CV, as well as some pointers on how to write successful cover letters.

King’s Careers & Employability are here for you, wherever you are on your career journey. You can read all about our services from our web pages, and learn how we can help you build success.

During the year, King’s would also organise different networking events. Some events being student-based, bringing fourth-year IM students (that had already pursued their work placement) together with us, second-years. This was great because the fourth-year students were more than happy to talk about their experiences and share some tips with us. Other networking events consisted of corporate firms visiting our university and giving us advice on our applications.

I came to find applying for jobs in the UK to be very intense, as in general most firms require you to go through the process of taking online tests, video interviews, and assessment centres. Since I was applying to firms mostly based in London, I knew that the process would be very competitive, therefore, I had to make sure I was performing to the best of my abilities. With the advice and feedback, I had received from my meetings with the careers consultants, as well as attending networking evenings with students and firms, I was well equipped when going through these application processes.

By the end of December, I had received 4 offers from top firms in the UK to pursue my placement year at, which was very exciting. And finally accepted an offer from Deloitte to start this year.

I need an agreement for me to undertake an internship, placement or work opportunity

If you are participating in a structured internship programme , industry placement or consultancy project run by King’s (credit-bearing) , you will be expected to complete the King’s Host Agreement in order to formalise your involvement. Failure to complete this may mean you are unable to participate in the programme.

We know that many other students will take part in extracurricular internships – and sometimes your host employer will request documentation from King’s to confirm your student status ( or request that your university agrees to certain terms ) in order for you to undertake the opportunity.

  •   If your employer wishes to simply confirm your student status, you can download your Confirmation of Study Letter and share this with them.
  • You can download a Record of Agreed Results (ROAR) if your employer is requesting confirmation of your current modular results before you have completed your programme.
  • If you have already completed your programme, your employer may use your HEAR and the Higher Education Degree Datacheck (HEDD) to confirm your qualification at King's online.

If your employer requires additional documentation, the King’s Host Agreement is available for you to share with them.

Please be advised that King’s is unable to sign employers’ own documentation or that provided by external organisations. These documents will be rejected. Unfortunately, if your employer requires documentation from King’s – but is unable to sign our King’s Host Agreement, you may be unable to undertake this opportunity.

What is the King’s Host Agreement?

This tripartite documentation is facilitated by King’s Careers & Employability but may require you to seek involvement from your personal tutor or academic department as it requires that you, your employer and King’s all complete the document in order for us to formally approve.

The King’s Host Agreement satisfies our legal and regulatory requirements alongside providing a level of support to you whilst on your opportunity . O ur expectations upon employers are outlined in th e document to ensure your health and safety, compliance with policies and insurance regulations, guarantee of fair remuneration where legally required . It also outlines support with termination, complaints, misconduct and appeals.

It has been created in line with guidance from the Universities Safety & Health Association (USHA) and ASET, the Work-based Learning Association. The Agreement is approved for use by King’s legal and governance teams and is regularly reviewed to ensure compliance with all UK legislation and is sufficiently covered by European law.

What the King’s Host Agreement is not?

The Agreement is not a contract of employment and King’s maintains no contractual involvement in setting aspects such as pay, working hours, location , termination & notice periods other than ensuring our base minimum expectations are met.

It is not to be used in lieu of a contract of employment, which you may sign separately , directly with your host employer.

Who can use it?

You are eligible to use the King's Host Agreement if you are:

  • A currently registered student at King's College London, whose formal student status is retained until after the end of the relevant opportunity.
  • Enrolled in a programme of at least six months in length (either full-time or part-time)

Prospective students and offer holders are not eligible to use the King's Host Agreement, neither are alumni of the institution who completed their course more than two years (24 months) ago.

If the bulk of your internship takes place after you formally complete your studies at King’s please follow the guidance below for the Graduate Host Agreement.

You can check your formal course dates via your Confirmation of Study letter , to ascertain how much of your opportunity might be beyond your course completion.

Your registered student status is not connected to your graduation ceremony but to the end of your programme of studies. Therefore, you cannot delay your graduation to extend your student status.

Important to know: by completing the King’s Host Agreement, we expect you to act professionally, representing both yourself and King’s College London appropriately. Therefore, please consider the following best practices:

  • Be courteous and prompt when responding to communications from employers
  • Consider any offers you receive fully, asking any questions relating to the role, such as timings, salary (if appropriate) , expectations, training, etc., prior to agreeing an d signing a contract
  • Once you have secured an opportunity and started a King’s Host Agreement,  do not  renege on your acceptance and find a different opportunity
  • The way you choose to behave may impact the employer’s likelihood to work with you in future years, so behave in a way you would like to be remembered for

Important Information

An opportunity may only be undertaken during semester dates if part-time and up to 20 hours per week. Agreements received which do not meet this will be automatically rejected.

It is the responsibility of students to undertake their own due diligence in advance of applying for an opportunity.

  • You should explicitly ask your employer when applying for , or are offered a role, whether the y expect King’s to complete any documentation for you to undertake the role
  • You should clarify whether the role will be available to you should you cease to be a student for all or part of the opportunity
  • You should clarify whether your employer requires you to undertake the opportunity for credit related to your course , or as part of a course of study . If it is not possible to undertake an opportunity as part of your programme , you will be unable to pursue the opportunity. King’s is unable to confirm that an opportunity will form a part of a students’ programme of study or is credit-bearing if this is not the case , and you are undertaking this as an extracurricular activ ity

Key things to know about the Host Agreement

  • An opportunity may only be undertaken by current students during semesters if it’s part-time and up to 20 hours per week. Agreements sent to King’s Careers & Employability or your academic department which don’t meet this will be automatically rejected.
  • You should explicitly ask your employer when applying for, or are offered a role, whether they expect King’s to complete any documentation so you can undertake the role.
  • You should clarify whether the role will be available to you should you cease to be a student for all or part of the opportunity.
  • You should clarify whether you're hoping to undertake the opportunity for credit as part of your course, or simply as an extra-curricular endeavour. If it is a contractual requirement of your employer to undertake the opportunity for credit related to your course, or as part of a course of study, but this is not possible on your programme, you will be unable to pursue the opportunity.
  • Your employer must possess employers' liability insurance (of at least £5m) and confirm this cover can be provided to you throughout the duration of your opportunity. This is a legal requirement in the UK and where students are undertaking opportunities overseas, King's expects an equivalence or parallel legal equivalent to be provided to cover for possible incident whilst undertaking the opportunity, as part of our duty of care.
  • It is not the responsibility of the university to engage directly with your host employer, neither can King’s be held responsible for an employer not being able to fulfil our expectations and obligations, or an opportunity which may be voided if your employer cannot accept the King’s Host Agreement.

Important to know:

  • Unfortunately, if your employer requires documentation from King’s – but is unable to sign our King’s Host Agreement, you may be unable to undertake this opportunity.
  • Changes cannot be made to insurance or health & safety clauses and are not guaranteed to be made.
  • King’s is unable to confirm that an opportunity will form a part of your programme of study or is credit-bearing, if this is not the case.

Taking up opportunities overseas

The details outlined above are particularly important if you are considering an internship in a country (e.g. France, Belgium, Italy, Spain) where they commonly use an agreement called a ‘ Convention De Stage’/’Acuerdo De Practicas’/’Convenio De Colaboracion ’.

  • These agreements are contractually binding and required because their employment legislation means that an intern may not legally treated as a full ‘employee’.
  • This means your employer is not required to undertake certain checks, may not be required to pay you, or have insurance or social security in place should something go wrong.
  • King’s cannot sign these Agreements supplied by your employer.

You should also check the latest King’s guidance on support for international mobility, and whether travel to that country may not be permitted by the institution at that time (e.g. in event of a pandemic, natural disaster or travel advisory warning). You may be required to also complete further risk assessment documentation for us to confirm an opportunity.

How do I obtain the King’s Host Agreement?

The King's Host Agreement is a digital form completed through DocuSign , a safe and secure platform that uses a qualified electronic signature that is unique to you.

There is a French King’s Host Agreement – you can access this via a form . Please note we require all answers in this document to be in English . You should contact your Host Organisation ahead of time to let them know they must respond in English.

You do not need to register to use DocuSign. You will sign it first, then it will be automatically sent to your employer and finally to the relevant King's authority. Please refer to the FAQs section in this article to understand how the DocuSign process works.

For K ing’s B usiness S chool students ONLY – if you are undertaking an opportunity that is NOT part of your course, please follow this link to complete your King’s Host Agreement .

If you are undertaking a Year In Industry and are from KBS (or NMES) – you will receive a diffe rent link from the Global Placements team.

To have a King’s Host Agreement approved, please be advised that:

  • You will need to provide your full name and King's email address ([email protected])  when setting up the contact details on DocuSign.
  •   You will need to provide the correct contact name and email address of the employer in the 'Request a King's Host Agreement' form. The agreement cannot be signed without this information. Please ensure the email address is correct, as DocuSign will automatically send them the agreement after you have signed.
  • Please refer to the FAQs section in this article to understand how the DocuSign process works.

Important to know:  It is your responsibility to ensure all parties sign the King’s Host Agreement in advance of your opportunity commencing. King’s representatives are not responsible for chasing your Host or the King’s Authority to sign the document.

You must initiate the Agreement at least 21 days prior to the start of your opportunity to ensure that all signatories have the opportunity to review the relevant sections. Failure to do so may jeopardise the chances of receiving the necessary documentation and it cannot be guaranteed that the Agreement will be confirmed in time.

To make full use of the terms and conditions in the Agreement, you must be registered as a student for the entire duration of the opportunity.

You can check your formal course dates via your Confirmation of Study letter , to make sure that the opportunity starts and ends within your official course dates.

Who signs on behalf of King’s?

If you’re undertaking one of our own programmes or an industry placement (The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences or King’s Business School) your Agreement will be automatically directed to the relevant member of staff responsible for that delivery.

Students on the Accredited Internships Programme will have that document sign by their Internship Module Academic convener .

For all other students, King's considers the Head of Department, or when they are unavailable, the Deputy Head or Personal Tutor, as the designated King's authority that reviews and signs the agreement for internships or placements . For KBS students, the KBS W ork- R elated L earning team will sign these agreement s .

PhD students and research staff should liaise with their tutor in the Centre for Doctoral Studies.

The King's authority will review the agreement and check that the opportunity meets the essential criteria of quality and health and safety, and will use their professional judgement to approve or reject agreements based on the information provided.

We have Guidance and Advice for Academic and Professional Services staff (PDF, Intranet) to support them in signing the Agreement, which you may wish to share.

I’m graduating during the opportunity or a graduate of King’s , or a dormant student who has interrupted their studies; can I access the Agreement?

The King’s Host Agreement terminates automatically when you cease to be enrolled as a student of King’s College London, as per paragraph 11.1 of the terms and conditions.

This means that King’s will not be able to support you in holding your employer accountable for your health and safety, compliance with policies and regulations, guarantee of minimum wage, support with termination, complaints, misconduct or appeals after your ‘course completion’ date has passed.

If you are a graduate, you are not entitled to the terms and conditions of the King’s Host Agreement as the formal relationship with King’s College London has ended before the start of the internship or placement.

We have a condensed Graduate Host Agreement which may be used by students who completed their course of study within the last two years.

To access this Agreement, you will need to be registered as an alumni with King's CareerConnect and follow this Pathway .

We have a French version of the Graduate Host Agreement you can use if you are undertaking this opportunity in France. You can access it via this Pathway , making sure you are registered as an alumni w ith King’s CareerConnect .

This Agreement will be signed on behalf o f the university by King’s Careers & Employability, who will receive the form automatically to approve.

Important to know: You will need to obtain any relevant health and liability insurance prior to the opportunity. You will not be insured against the risk of sickness and maternity, disability, and accidents at work by King’s and may not be by your host organisation, so please check with them directly. King’s College London shall not be liable for any accident involving the graduate or costs arising from this or provide any form of insurance. Both the organisation and the graduate shall obtain liability insurance with an insurance provider of their choice. King’s College London shall not be liable for any actions, errors, or omissions of the graduate.

Where can I get advice related to my visa?

Students holding a Student V isa must ensure they check their status means they are able to undertake an opportunity and should check with the Visa & International Student Advice Team for any support.

King’s is unable to provide support regarding visas in other countries to enable you to work . Y ou will need to seek independent advice from that country’s Embassy or Consulate .

How does the DocuSign process work?

  • C omplete all your details , sign, and click “Finish ”. Once you click on “Finish ”, the Agreement will automatically be forwarded to the Host Organisation
  • Once they complete everything, sign and click “Finish ”, it will be forwarded to your Faculty or relevant King’s department for final review and signature
  • You will not receive a notification once you have completed your sections. Y o u will only be notified once all 3 parties have signed. Please do not initiate the King’s Host Agreement several times as this will confuse your Host Organisation

Who should I speak to if my agreement is taking too long to be approved?

Best Year of my Life!

  • Infrastructure, College Bar (You’ll network with a vibrant mix of people there), Social Events, Kings Ball, Faculty, Staff
  • Course (As it was just theoretical)

Honestly, I didn't use our university's careers portal. Instead, I applied for jobs mainly through LinkedIn, which was very effective for me. The King's career team also provided invaluable assistance by helping me update and improve my CV.

King's College London was always my dream college. At first, my application was rejected, but then all of a sudden I got a mail saying I was acknowledged. I always wanted to go to King's because of variety of courses available there and as I wanted to get into marketing, I decided to pursue International Marketing but what came to my disappointment was that the Course Fee was too high and the course structure was designed in away that there was no practical experience included in the course. However, it was genuinely the best experience of my life. I made new friends, learned so many new things and got an experience of living independently.

KCL - MSc Banking and Finance

  • The program structure - 6 months of teaching followed by 3 months of dissertation. ,
  • The course was quite practical in terms of the knowledge imparted and the skills developed. ,
  • The faculty in the 2nd trimester was industry professionals who shared industry insights.
  • The dissertation support was minimal and it wasn't conducted in an ideal manner. ,
  • The cohort was mostly people with 0-1 years of work experience and not as diverse as I was expecting.

There are no placements in the university - placement support was offered in terms of interview preps, how to apply, etc.

I chose this college because of the reputation and rankings of the university and its location being London. My overall experience was good, with a few pros and cons as mentioned above.

Great experience

  • I like the Campus.
  • I dislike the Assessment Methods (More exams than practical application)

80% people placed in 6 months after graduation. I don't know the average salary.

My main motivation for choosing this college was that they provided a unique list of modules that were not available in other top-ranking colleges.

KCL MSc Neuroscience review

  • King's College London is an esteemed college, has a good world ranking, and is quite well known so that is beneficial. ,
  • Academically, the structure of the syllabus is very clear. You will always have an idea at the very beginning of the course, about when you submit each assignment and where the exams will be held. ,
  • You are well informed about the career options after the course. Opportunities to network with people in different fields. ,
  • King's College London has 4 campuses across main London, wherein the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IOPPN) is a separate campus in itself. ,
  • Travelling to any of these campuses is very accessible and you can use any of them. For example, there are libraries on all campuses. Almost all campuses have at least one 24/7 library. ,
  • Teachers are very warm and kind. You can always approach them.
  • There is no placement as such. You can find career fairs happening on campus and career mentors. However, there is no placement cell. ,
  • The lab experience for everyone will be different. Which can be considered good or bad. However, for a dissertation, you can rank the projects you want to work on, and if you end up getting a lower rank of your preference, then you might not get the kind of research experience you want. You can always opt to reach out individually to researchers in that case.

There is no placement cell as such. However, there are career fairs for part-time and full time where you can find good companies. Research-wise, it is easier to get research assistant/technician jobs through MSc Neuroscience degree.

I chose this college as I really loved their website specifically for Neuroscience. Exposure to using fMRI, and brain histology really motivated me to apply for an MSc in Neuroscience at KCL. This course allowed me to choose a speciality out of neuroimaging, neurodegeneration, cognitive neuroscience and neural stem cells - all topic very much in demand in neuroscience research. Out of three offers that I got, KCL was the best university ranking wise, exposure wise, location wise. My overall experience was definitely very good especially because of the support by teachers, who were always very helpful and kind.

Insight into KCL

  • Stellar Academics, Good Extracurricular activities, Inclusive campus and welcoming students, Proximity to the best locations (Corporate Offices help with open days), Stellar Faculty , Emphasis on Applied Learning
  • Major emphasis on self-studying (less hand-held support), Assessment arrangements can sometimes be "not ideal", Cost of Living

I personally won't be able to answer this because I am in my second year and have yet to face these, but I have seen companies coming to campus to encourage students to apply for internships and jobs and KCL is a target school for a lot of companies.

I chose my course, particularly King's because I did not know what I wanted to do at the time of applying but I had a rough idea that it would be something related to economics and the field of finance which is why I chose economics and management which has a good mix of both quantitative and qualitative learning.

Masters at King’s College London

  • It is a one-year course that is really extensive and creative in its structure. We have to work really hard but it keeps us motivated.

They are good, however, London right now faces problems as there is a lot of inflation and fewer job opportunities.

I chose this college because of it's ranking and referral from knowns. The university is in London. The college ranking (under the top 40) mainly.

KCL - PG review.

  • I love how the people and professors are.
  • I dislike that the entire exam system is just like schools while I prefer to have continuous assessment. ,
  • It is also that while there is a careers office to help you with resume writing, a university job portal and all, no placement team is there which brings companies to campuses. So it is quite hard to get jobs on your own.

Nothing to Say, no campus recruitment at all. Research opportunities are only dependent on how many professors you reach out to.

I chose King's because of the programme as it is interdisciplinary, as well as it was a blend of Economics and Policy, the two subjects which I preferred to do. The campus is also located in Central London which is perfect to network and connect with industry professionals.

Believe it, Do it, Achieve it!

  • Excellent infrastructure that helps the students to develop skills and remove any hindrances in their research. ,
  • Really equipped and updated with the latest technology. Great career-building activities providing real-world exposure. ,
  • Learned and experienced staff that are working in their respective fields for almost 20 to 30 years. So, you can understand the knowledge base they must have.
  • Placement cell not so efficient. Fewer opportunities and guidance.

Companies are - PWC, Barclays, Mazars, Deloitte. Many alumni are working in these institutions with successful careers and the median salaries offered are - 37000 pounds per year.

My university is known for the efficient and learned staff along with the unique body of researches conducted at the institute. It is known as the best for finance courses and industry exposure programmes. Hence, this was the main point that attracted me to select this university and gain profound knowledge.

Days in my Life at King's College

Campus placements are not a concept in UK universities. However, KCL has a careers and employability service that all students can sign up for which helps by giving advice on how to improve yourself as a job candidate and organizing several networking events for students to make connections. They are also able to help students secure part-time jobs during term time and will help students who approach them with employment queries. Overall, KCL has one of the highest employment rates for graduates all across the UK. Even within KCL, there are always several jobs advertised for research assistants and technicians which are open to all who meet the eligibility requirements. From the MSc Neuroscience graduates, most students go on to do Ph.D. in prestigious institutions. Some students pursue a medical degree after they complete the neuroscience degree and others go on to work in pharmaceutical and other science-based industries. The average salary for a neuroscience graduate is 30,000 GBP which is eligible for the increase. After a Ph.D., the salary can increase to 40,000-50,000 GBP.

No. I am focusing on applying for Ph.D. programs.

Incredibly Flexible program of Biomedical Sciences

There are great placement opportunities at major firms such Pfizer etc. They look at your first year score and predicted 2nd year score. There is great guidance from the faculty towards achieving these placements.
