Understanding Urdu Grammar for Effective Resume Writing

When preparing a resume in Urdu, it is crucial to follow certain grammar rules and structures to communicate information accurately and professionally. Mostly, the third person should be used, because it creates a formal tone and is more appropriate in professional writing. The use of the third person instead of the first person also helps to maintain an objective perspective. For instance, instead of saying "میں نے سیلز کی ٹیم کو لیڈ کیا" (I led the sales team), it is more professional to say "سیلز کی ٹیم کو لیڈ کیا گیا" (The sales team was led).

As for the tense, the past tense is usually used when describing past jobs, responsibilities, and achievements. The use of past tense emphasizes that these actions have been completed. For example, "میں نے مارکیٹنگ کی کمپیگن کو منصوبہ بندی کی" (I planned the marketing campaign) should be written as "مارکیٹنگ کی کمپیگن کو منصوبہ بندی کی گئی" (The marketing campaign was planned). However, for the current job or role, the present tense should be used. For example, "میں موجودہ طور پر سیلز کی ٹیم کو لیڈ کر رہا ہوں" (I am currently leading the sales team). This helps to clearly distinguish between past roles or achievements and current responsibilities.

Moreover, Urdu conjugation rules should also be kept in mind while writing a resume. The verb should agree with the subject in number and gender. For example, if the subject is feminine, the verb should be in feminine form. For instance, "میں نے کمپیگن (feminine) کو منصوبہ بندی کی" (I planned the campaign) should be written as "کمپیگن کو منصوبہ بندی کی گئی" (The campaign was planned).

Mastering the Art of Resume Formatting in Urdu: A Key to Stand Out!

  • Urdu CVs should adopt a professional and clear format. This entails a clean layout with distinct sections separated by lines or white spaces. The reason being, a well-organized format allows the employer to quickly scan through the document and find relevant information easily. ‍
  • Opt for traditional fonts such as Nafees Web Naskh or Jameel Noori Nastaleeq while writing a CV in Urdu. These fonts are typically used for Urdu script and are easily readable, hence, ensuring that the content of your CV is clear and legible to the reader. ‍
  • Margins should be set at 1 inch on all sides. This not only provides a neat and tidy appearance but also leaves room for the employer to make notes or comments alongside the text. ‍
  • Use bullet points to list down your skills, qualifications, or duties in previous jobs. This breaks down the information into digestible chunks, making it simpler for the reader to comprehend your qualifications and skills. ‍
  • Avoid using bright or overly colorful themes. Instead, opt for a simple white background with black or dark grey text. This color combination is considered professional and is less distracting to the reader. ‍
  • Lastly, always proofread your CV to ensure there are no typographical or grammatical errors. A CV free of mistakes comes across as professional and shows your attention to detail. ‍

Mastering the Art of Resume Writing in Urdu: A Focus on Structure

Urdu language

Creating a CV in Urdu for the job market involves incorporating key elements that are similar to those in English, but with a cultural context specific to Urdu speaking countries. The structure of the CV is critical in presenting a professional image to potential employers. Here are the main parts of a CV in Urdu:

  • Personal Information: This section should include your name, contact details, and a professional photograph if applicable. In Urdu-speaking job markets, it's common to include your father's name and your date of birth. ‍
  • Career Objective: This is a brief statement about your career goals and aspirations. For instance, if you are applying for a teaching job, you might state your goal as "Seeking a position as a Urdu language teacher that allows me to share my passion for the language and culture." ‍
  • Educational Qualifications: This section should list all your educational credentials, starting from the most recent. In Pakistan, a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university is often considered a minimum requirement for many jobs. ‍
  • Work Experience: Detail your previous job roles, responsibilities and achievements. For example, if you've previously worked as a manager, you might mention how you improved team productivity or incorporated new management techniques. ‍
  • Skills: Highlight both your hard and soft skills. If you're applying for a job in the IT sector in Karachi, you might mention your proficiency in software development or project management. ‍
  • Languages: This is particularly important in a multilingual country like Pakistan. Be sure to mention your proficiency level in Urdu, English, Punjabi, Sindhi or any other languages you speak. ‍
  • References: Include references from previous employers or professors who can vouch for your abilities and work ethic. It's advisable to inform your references beforehand that you're listing them on your CV. ‍

Mastering the Art of Crafting a Resume Header in Urdu: A Comprehensive Guide

Urdu language

The header in an Urdu language resume is crucial because it must be easily visible and include all necessary contact information. To create a proper header, start by writing your last name, followed by your first name. Following this, specify your profession and discipline to provide a brief overview of your professional identity. The next line should be dedicated to your mailing address, ensuring the potential employer knows where to send any formal correspondence. Your phone number should come next, providing a quick means of verbal communication. Finally, add your e-mail address, which is critical in this digital age where much of professional communication is done electronically.

Exploring the Impact of a Photo in Crafting the Perfect Urdu Resume

In the Urdu job market, the inclusion of a photo in a resume is not a strict requirement. Unlike some Western countries where it's considered inappropriate due to anti-discrimination laws, in Pakistan, it is accepted but not mandatory. The decision to include a photo should be based on the job description or the employer's specific request.

If a job applicant decides to include a photo, it should be a professional headshot. It should be passport-sized, preferably 2x2 inches, and in a color format. The photo should present the individual in a professional manner, meaning it should be a clear image, with a plain background, and the individual should be dressed in business attire. The facial expression should be neutral and the photo should be recent.

However, it is important to remember that the focus of a resume should be the individual's skills, qualifications and experiences. Including a photo can sometimes distract from the primary content. Additionally, there is a risk of discrimination or bias based on appearance. Hence, unless specifically requested, it is generally advisable not to include a photo in a resume in the Urdu job market.

Highlighting Experience in Your Resume: A Key Factor for Success in the Urdu Job Market

Crafting the experience section of your resume for the urdu job market.

The Experience section of an Urdu CV is of immense significance as it showcases the candidate's professional journey and expertise in a specific field. It presents an opportunity to impress prospective employers by highlighting relevant experiences, demonstrating the growth in skills and abilities over time, and showcasing the ability to handle responsibilities and tasks pertinent to the job.

  • Always arrange your experiences in a chronological order: Starting from the most recent job to the oldest one provides a clear picture of the candidate's professional growth and progression. This showcases the progression of responsibilities and skills, demonstrating a pattern of success and adaptability. ‍
  • Always include contract dates: Providing the dates of employment for each role establishes a timeline that helps potential employers understand the candidate's experience and longevity in each position. It also helps to clarify any employment gaps that might otherwise raise questions. ‍
  • Specify the job title: Clearly state the job title held in each role. This gives the employer an immediate understanding of the candidate's level of responsibility, authority, and rank within the organization. ‍
  • Use a bulleted list for responsibilities: Outline the key responsibilities undertaken in each role using a bulleted list. This allows potential employers to quickly scan the candidate's experiences and understand the scope of their roles. ‍
  • Provide a concise job description: A brief job description accompanying each role gives context to the responsibilities and achievements listed. It should clearly communicate the nature of the work and the environment in which the candidate has previously operated. ‍
  • Make use of keywords: Incorporate keywords from the job description into the experience section. This will not only draw the attention of the reader but also increase the chances of the CV being picked up by applicant tracking systems. Keywords could include specific skills, abilities, or job-specific terminology. ‍

Navigating the Resume Writing Process in Urdu When You Have No Experience

Understanding how to craft a compelling CV can be challenging, especially when you're just starting out. If your primary language is Urdu and you have no prior experience, it may seem even more daunting. Below, we provide simple and easy-to-follow tips on how to fill out a CV in Urdu when you don't have any experience. These guidelines will help you highlight your skills and potential effectively.

  • Start with Personal Details: Make sure to start your CV with your personal details, including your name, contact number, and address. In Urdu, this section is typically written at the top of the CV. ‍
  • Write an Objective: Since you are applying for a job with no prior experience, it is essential to write a strong and clear objective in Urdu explaining what you hope to achieve in your career and how the specific job will help you attain those goals. ‍
  • Highlight your Education: In the absence of work experience, your educational qualifications become extremely important. Make sure to include all relevant details such as your degree, the institution you studied at, and your grades. This information should be translated into Urdu. ‍
  • Include Extracurricular Activities: If you have participated in any extracurricular activities during your academic years, include them in your CV. This could be anything from sports teams, clubs, or societies you were a part of. This will show that you are a well-rounded individual. ‍
  • Mention Skills: Even if you don't have professional experience, you may have developed some skills through your education, hobbies, or personal life. These can be things like computer skills, language skills (including Urdu), or any other skills that might be relevant to the job. ‍
  • Include Volunteer Work and Internships: If you have done any volunteer work or internships, make sure to include these in your CV. This demonstrates that you have some practical experience, even if it's not paid work. ‍
  • Use Simple and Clear Urdu: Ensure that you use simple and clear Urdu so that it is easy for the employer to understand. Avoid using complex words or phrases. ‍
  • Proofread: Always proofread your CV to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes. This is particularly important when writing in a language like Urdu, where a small mistake can change the meaning of a word or phrase. ‍
  • Keep it Short: A CV should ideally be no more than two pages long. So, keep your sentences short and to the point. ‍
  • Format Properly: Make sure that your CV is well-formatted. This means using the same font and size throughout, and making sure that everything is aligned correctly. In Urdu, this might mean ensuring that your text is right-aligned, as Urdu is written from right to left. ‍

Understanding the Importance of Highlighting Education in Urdu Resumes

The education section in a Urdu CV is of paramount importance as it presents your academic qualifications and achievements, which are crucial in determining your suitability for the job you're applying for. It is in this section where you highlight your educational background, including the courses you have taken, the degrees you have earned, and any honors or awards you have received during your academic journey. This section allows potential employers to assess your intellectual capabilities, skills, and knowledge related to the job post. Without this information, it would be challenging for the employers to gauge your potential, hence affecting your chances of securing the job.

Prioritizing Education Details in Your Urdu Resume

In a traditional Urdu CV, education should generally appear first, particularly for those in the early stages of their careers. This is because it is often the most substantial qualification a candidate may have, especially if they are recent graduates. For instance, if a candidate has recently completed a degree in Computer Science from a prestigious university, this information can significantly influence an employer's decision, hence its placement at the top of the resume.

However, there can be exceptions to this rule. For instance, if a candidate has a wealth of professional experience that is highly relevant to the job they're applying for, it may be more beneficial to feature this information before their educational qualifications. For example, a seasoned project manager applying for a senior role may choose to highlight their extensive experience and successful projects before listing their MBA degree.

In conclusion, while education is usually placed first in an Urdu CV, the choice of placement should be strategically decided based on what would most effectively showcase the candidate's qualifications and suitability for the role.

The Significance of Highlighting Skills in Your Urdu Resume

Urdu language

Skills are an integral part of a resume in Urdu as they demonstrate a candidate's capabilities and proficiency in their respective field. In Pakistan, where Urdu is widely spoken, a resume with clearly defined skills is considered a reflection of a candidate's professional competency and potential for growth. These skills can range from technical abilities specific to an industry, such as IT skills for tech jobs, to soft skills such as communication, leadership, and problem-solving. They provide recruiters with insights into what a candidate can bring to a role and whether they would be a good fit for the company.

Recruiters in Pakistan, like elsewhere, are looking for candidates who not only have the necessary qualifications but also the skills to excel in the job market. They seek individuals who have the ability to adapt, learn, and contribute in a dynamic work environment. Depending on the job, recruiters may look for specific technical skills, knowledge of local and international markets, fluency in multiple languages (especially English and Urdu), and proficiency in digital tools and platforms. In addition, soft skills such as teamwork, flexibility, and time management are increasingly valued in the contemporary job market. Therefore, highlighting these skills in an Urdu resume can significantly increase a candidate's chances of landing a job.

Soft Skills (نرم مہارتیں):

  • Communication Skills (مواصلاتی مہارتیں)
  • Teamwork (ٹیم ورک)
  • Problem-Solving (مسئلہ حل کرنے کی صلاحیت)
  • Adaptability (ادھار پذیری)
  • Time Management (وقت کی تدبیر)
  • Leadership (قیادت)
  • Creativity (تخلیقیت)
  • Decision Making (فیصلہ سازی)
  • Conflict Resolution (تنازع حل) ‍

Hard Skills (سخت مہارتیں):

  • Computer Programming (کمپیوٹر پروگرامنگ)
  • Graphic Design (گرافک ڈیزائن)
  • Foreign Languages (غیر ملکی زبانیں)
  • Data Analysis (ڈیٹا تجزیہ)
  • Project Management (پروجیکٹ مینجمنٹ)
  • Digital Marketing (ڈیجیٹل مارکیٹنگ)
  • Social Media Management (سوشل میڈیا مینجمنٹ)
  • SEO/SEM Marketing (SEO/SEM مارکیٹنگ)
  • Statistical Analysis (شماریاتی تجزیہ) ‍

Incorporating Additional Sections in Your Urdu Resume

In a CV written in Urdu, additional headings like Languages, Hobbies or Interests, Certificates, Driving Licenses, References, and IT tools can be included. These additional categories can provide a more comprehensive profile of the candidate. They can highlight the unique skills and experiences that make the candidate stand out from the rest.

Choosing Languages and Certificates as additional categories can be beneficial in many ways. Languages can show the candidate's ability to communicate with diverse groups of people and work in multicultural environments, which is a highly desirable skill in today's globalized world. If a candidate is fluent in multiple languages, it can significantly increase their employability.

Certificates, on the other hand, can demonstrate the candidate's commitment to continuous learning and professional development. They can also provide evidence of the candidate's skills and competencies in specific areas. If a candidate has certificates that are relevant to the job they are applying for, it can greatly enhance their chances of getting hired. Therefore, including Languages and Certificates in a CV can greatly enhance the candidate's profile and increase their chances of getting the job.

Crafting an Effective Cover Letter in Urdu for Your Resume

When applying for a job in an Urdu-speaking country, enclosing a cover letter with your resume is highly essential. This is because a cover letter provides a personalized introduction, allowing you to express in detail your skills, experiences, and why you are the best candidate for the job. It gives the employer a better understanding of your qualifications beyond what is listed in your resume. It also demonstrates your communication skills and shows your professionalism and serious intent to the prospective employer. Thus, a well-crafted cover letter can greatly increase your chances of being selected for an interview.

Olympics Opening Ceremony 2024: How to watch, start time, and everything you need to know

Over 10,000 athletes will sail down the Seine on Friday in what is poised to be most ambitious Olympic opening ceremony ever attempted.

The 2024 Olympics , which kick off this week in Paris, are intended to " revolutionize " the Games yet remain accessible to a broad audience.

To commemorate the official start of the Olympics, which were last held in Paris exactly a century ago, organizers have spent years orchestrating a dynamic, and distinctly French, affair.

Follow along for live coverage

Over a billion people around the world are expected to tune in. Here's everything to know about the ceremony, which, if all goes to plan, will go down in Olympic history.

Stream every moment and every medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Peacock, starting with the opening ceremony Friday at 12 p.m. ET.

What time does the Olympics opening ceremony start?

The live NBC broadcast kicks off with a pre-show at noon ET Friday, and the ceremony itself begins at 7:30 p.m. Paris time, or 1:30 p.m. ET.

The prime-time encore telecast, which features additional content, will air later in the day for U.S. viewers, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The ceremony is expected to be over four hours.

Follow here for live coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

How can you watch the opening ceremony?

NBC will have 40 cameras capturing the action in Paris, and live coverage begins at noon ET. The ceremony will be broadcast on TV and streamed in digital format on NBC, Peacock and NBC Olympics. (NBC News shares a parent company with those entities, NBCUniversal).

A complete schedule of the events over the next two weeks can be found here .

What happens during the opening ceremony?

At the start of the ceremony, the French flag will be raised and the French national anthem will be played.

Next comes what is arguably the highlight of the ceremony: the Parade of Nations. Athletes representing 206 countries will make their ceremonial entrance into the Games. Historically, that involves marching into a stadium on foot, but this year, athletes will proceed by boat along the " main artery " of Paris, the Seine River.

"An opening ceremony has never been held outside of a stadium. There is no model; it’s absolute creation," opening ceremony artistic director Thomas Jolly told The Associated Press .

Each national delegation will ride in a boat equipped with cameras that enable immersive access for viewers.

The ceremony will begin at the Austerlitz Bridge and travel just under 4 miles down the river, landing at the Trocadéro near the Eiffel Tower. Along the way, the athletes will pass the city's most prominent icons, including the Louvre and the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral.

At the end of the route, the Olympic torch will be lit. French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to speak.

Several potential roadblocks, such as security and pollution concerns , have threatened to impede the extravagant opening ceremony. However, officials maintain that they are " more than ready " as they make their final preparations.

Who are the ceremony hosts? Who is performing?

NBC's Mike Tirico will host the ceremony for the fourth time, alongside three-time Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson and NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, hosts of NBC’s “TODAY,” will have an aerial view of the ceremony from a bridge on the Seine. Maria Taylor, a commentator for NBC Sports, will also be part of the hosting effort.

The official musical performers remain unconfirmed, but Céline Dion and Lady Gaga have both arrived in Paris, further fueling speculation that they may be among the headliners.

The French newspaper  Le Parisien  reported that Dion, who is Québécois and often sings in French, is rumored to perform “L’Hymne à l’amour,” by one of France's most famous musicians, Édith Piaf. It would be Dion's first live performance since she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in 2022.

When will Team USA appear? Who are the flag bearers?

Because the U.S. will host the next Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, Team USA is set to be the penultimate team down the river. France gets the honor of being the last boat for its home Olympics.

NBA legend LeBron James and U.S. Open tennis champion Coco Gauff are scheduled to bear the U.S. flag throughout the ceremony. Gauff, 20, will be the youngest athlete to ever carry the Stars and Stripes at an Olympic opening ceremony.

James is a three-time Olympic medalist, while Gauff will make her Olympic debut in Paris.

If Kamala Harris Is a D.E.I. Candidate, So Is JD Vance

A crowd seen from behind holding Trump-Vance signs.

By Lydia Polgreen

Opinion Columnist

Ever since speculation began that Vice President Kamala Harris might replace President Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, there has been a steady, ugly chorus on the right. The New York Post published a column that declared that Harris would be a “ D.E.I. president ,” and quickly the phrase ricocheted across the conservative media ecosystem.

The invocation of diversity, equity and inclusion programs meant to bring people from underrepresented backgrounds into institutions of power and influence clearly implied that a Black woman got power because of racial preferences. Black achievement, in this narrative, is always unearned and conferred without regard to merit.

Listening to JD Vance’s speech at the Republican convention on Wednesday night, as he laid out his remarkable biography — a young man with roots in an economically devastated backwater who scaled the heights of the American elite — I couldn’t help thinking to myself: If Harris is a D.E.I. candidate, so is Vance. It just depends on what kind of diversity you mean. It depends, indeed, on how you understand the role of identity in shaping the opportunities that define anyone’s life.

All politics is, at some level, identity politics — the business of turning identity into power, be it the identity of a candidate or demographic group or political party or region of the country. For modern presidential and vice-presidential candidates, one of their most valuable assets is their life story. Some elements of that story are bequeathed at birth, but what makes politicians successful is their talent at narrating that story in a manner that allows voters to see some version of themselves and their own aspirations in the candidate. This kind of storytelling, embedded in American archetypes and ideals, has shaped our politics.

Vance’s entire business and political career has flowed from his life story, which is embedded in identities he did not choose: Born a “hillbilly,” of Scottish-Irish descent, he grew up in poverty, son of a single mother who was addicted to drugs. Overcoming this adversity, these disadvantages, lies at the core of his personal narrative. His ascent would hardly be so remarkable if he started from a life of middle-class comfort. But no one is portraying Vance’s elevation to the Republican ticket as the outcome of some kind of illegitimate identity politics, nor is Vance perceived as having benefited from a political form of affirmative action.

And yet he almost certainly did. Race is not the only kind of diversity that gets noticed and embraced. Elite institutions love up-by-your-bootstraps Americans, and that archetype is all over Vance’s life story. A promising white candidate from a county that sends few students to an elite college like Yale would get a strong look, even if that person’s grades and test scores were less impressive than other applicants’. (To be clear, I have no idea what kind of grades or scores Vance had.) Regardless of race, applicants from working-class backgrounds, especially if they were the first in their family to attend college, are deemed to add class diversity.

Kamala Harris: Everything you need to know

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign event.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Kamala Harris’ life has been filled with milestones.

Her elementary school class in the 1970s was the second one to integrate Berkeley schools .

Harris was the first woman elected as San Francisco’s district attorney.

She was the first woman to be elected as California’s attorney general.

She was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. Senate from California.

She was first woman elected vice president of the United States.

Now, with President Biden announcing Sunday that he will step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee and endorsing Harris, she is close to becoming the party’s Democratic nominee for president.

The Times has been covering Harris extensively for two decades. Here is an overview of her story from our pages.

President Biden listens as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks.

California roots

From Oakland to Canada and back, with inspiration from India

  • Harris was born in Oakland to parents who had come to California to study at UC Berkeley. Her father, who has roots in Jamaica, was an economics professor; her mother, who had roots in India, was a cancer researcher. Harris spent several years as a child in Oakland and Berkeley, but after her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Canada.
  • Harris has spoken of her Indian grandfather as being a key force in her life, and of her interest in government. P.V. Gopalan was an Indian civil servant on assignment in an era of postcolonial ferment. As The Times reported, “Until his death in 1998, Gopalan remained from thousands of miles away a pen pal and guiding influence — accomplished, civic-minded, doting, playful — who helped kindle Harris’ interest in public service.”
  • From seventh grade to the end of high school, Harris and her mother lived in Montreal and its Westmount neighborhood.

Harris earned her bachelor’s degree at Howard University in 1986.

In 2003, Harris serves lunch while running for San Francisco district attorney.

  • After graduating from the University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, Harris passed the bar examination and worked her way up in the Alameda County and San Francisco County district attorney’s offices. Harris was San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2010.
  • Harris started dating entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff and permanently relocated to Brentwood by the time they married in 2014.
  • In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, leaving her California job to take office early in 2017.

Political beginnings

A prosecutor with an ambition for Bay Area politics

  • Harris got her start in Bay Area politics and law enforcement. She prosecuted murder, rape, assault and drug cases at the Alameda County district attorney’s office in Oakland from 1990 to 1998.
  • San Francisco Dist. Atty. Terence Hallinan had hired Harris in 1998 to lead his career-criminal unit. She ended up running against him and winning in 2003. The campaign was bruising, with critics citing her relationship with San Francisco’s colorful and controversial Mayor Willie Brown. Her record as a prosecutor included some progressive policies but other ones that critics would later say were too “tough on crime.”

In 2010, Harris moved to statewide politics, defeating Republican Steve Cooley for attorney general.

Kamala Harris and several other people look at a laptop screen.

  • As attorney general, she started implicit-bias training for law enforcement, and as district attorney she launched a program that enabled first-time nonviolent offenders to get their charges dismissed if they finished job training. Critics have faulted her, though, for working in court to uphold California’s death penalty, despite her personal opposition, her threats to jail parents of chronically truant schoolchildren and flop flops.
  • In 2016, The Times editorial board praised Harris for being willing to stand up for the little guy as attorney general. But it issued this warning: “Harris has at times seemed more focused on her political career than on the job she was elected to do. She has been too cautious and unwilling to stake out a position on controversial issues, even when her voice would have been valuable to the debate.”
  • Harris gained national attention for her efforts to have courts overturn California’s ban on gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to legally marry.

National stage

Breaking barriers with a rise to Washington

  • Her next move was the 2016 race to replace the retiring Barbara Boxer as U.S. senator. With Democrats dominant in California, it came down to a history-making battle between her and Southern California’s Loretta Sanchez. When Harris won, The Times declared that she tore “down a color barrier that has stood for as long as California statehood.”
  • In 2019, she began her campaign for U.S. president. Early on she built strong momentum, drawing a crowd of roughly 20,000 to a lavish Oakland rally. She raised $1.5 million in just 24 hours. She boasted a string of endorsements from California politicians.
  • But her campaign slowly sputtered. As The Times reported in March 2019, the fall “stems in part from Harris’ failure to present a compelling case for her candidacy beyond her background as a prosecutor, her buoyant personality and a deep contempt — shared by others in the contest — for President Trump.”
  • In December, she suspended her campaign. The Times called it a “lackluster end to an initially soaring presidential bid premised on the California senator’s personal biography and prosecutorial acumen. Ultimately, her run foundered with a muddled purpose, campaign infighting and an inability to sustain support from vital Democratic voting blocs, particularly African Americans.”

Sen. Kamala Harris waves in front of a U.S. flag.

  • Biden locked in the nomination, but there was no guarantee he would pick her as his running mate. Some felt the Biden team was angry at her treatment of him during the campaign. But Biden ended up selecting Harris. The Times said at the time: “In many ways, Harris is a safe pick — broadly popular in the Democratic Party and well acquainted with the rigors of a national campaign. But her selection also carries symbolic heft in this moment when race relations are at top of mind for voters.”
  • Harris held her own during her debate with Vice President Mike Pence and serving as an effective surrogate. The Times reported “Those who have spoken with Harris say she sees the changes — in style, in her approach to campaigning, in the faces surrounding her — worth the goals she now pursues: replacing Trump with Biden and becoming the first female vice president in history.”

Vice president

Struggling to find her footing in a big job

  • Harris made history when she took office.
  • But her term has been marked by successes and struggles.
  • After her first year in office, The Times offered this assessment: “Harris has struggled to tell her own story, leaving others to fill the void. Conservative media have attacked her while mainstream outlets have published a string of stories about low morale and high staff turnover in her office. Like many vice presidents, Harris is learning how hard it is to define herself as a No. 2.
  • She was handed a difficult assignment in those early months: Leading diplomatic efforts to curb migration from Central America. There were early controversies, such as when she told would-be immigrants not to come to the United States . As the immigration issue has become hot in the 2024 race, Harris faces tough questions about her role in Biden policies.
  • Democrats worried about Harris’ lackluster poll numbers as they considered a leader of the party after Biden. “Harris has become a source of tension among Democrats, as growing worries over Harris’ political stature collide with concerns that any move to sideline her would alienate the voters needed to win elections and undercut the party’s promise of equity,” The Times wrote in 2021.
  • After the Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade, Harris emerged as a leading voice in protecting reproductive rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage near a man in a suit.

  • Barabak in early 2024 rated her this way : “Harris finally seems to have found her footing in a role to which she is accustomed and adept: prosecuting attorney.”
  • Harris has endured unprecedented levels of hate on social media. “Research shows that Harris may be the most targeted American politician on the internet, one who checks every box for the haters of the fever swamps: She’s a woman, she’s a person of color and she holds power,” The Times found.
  • Before Biden’s disastrous debate performance, Harris was still struggling to present herself as a successor. “More than three years into the oldest president in history’s first term, his understudy has failed to win over a majority of voters or convince them that she is ready to step in if Biden falters, according to polls ,” The Times reported in April.
  • Harris’ star rose as Democrats began to call on Biden to step aside and end his reelection campaign. She had remained publicly supportive of Biden, even as calls for her to replace him at the head of the ticket grew louder.

Gaza City-bound UN aid convoy comes under Israeli fire, says UNRWA

A UN convoy has been hit by “heavy shooting” from Israeli forces at a checkpoint while en route to Gaza City, the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, said on Monday.

“ Heavy shooting from the Israeli Forces at a UN convoy heading to Gaza City. While there are no casualties, our teams had to duck and take cover ” in the incident on Sunday, according to the head of UNRWA , Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, in a post on X, which called for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

One armoured vehicle was hit by “at least five bullets” while waiting just ahead of the Israeli Forces’ checkpoint south of Wadi Gaza, which divides the north and south of the enclave, he noted.

“The car was severely damaged, it left the convoy. The teams re-assembled and finally reached Gaza City,” said Mr. Lazzarini, adding that the mission had been “coordinated and approved” by the Israeli Authorities “like all other similar UN movements”.

New evacuation orders impact Khan Younis

The development came as further Israeli airstrikes and heavy artillery continued to hit targets in villages east of Gaza’s Khan Younis. New evacuation orders by the Israeli military have been issued to people sheltering in areas that it had previously designated as a “safe” humanitarian area west of Khan Younis, where some 400,000 people are believed to be sheltering, according to local authorities.

Media reports citing the Israeli military have indicated that it would be dangerous to stay in these areas as it intended to respond to attacks launched against it from there.

According to the UN aid coordination office, OCHA , about nine in 10 people in Gaza have been displaced at least once since last October .

Many live in appalling conditions, the UN agency warned, amid “surging” infectious diseases. It cited the UN health agency, WHO , which reported that from 7 October to 7 July, nearly one million cases of acute respiratory infections have been recorded.

“Nearly 575,000 cases of acute watery diarrhea and more than 100,000 cases of jaundice have also been documented”, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in an update, although the real number of infections is likely far higher.

West Bank uptick in child killings

Meanwhile in the occupied West Bank, the UN Children’s Fund ( UNICEF ) reported on Monday that the killing of youngsters more than tripled since 7 October, compared to the first nine months of 2023, with one Palestinian youngster dying every two days , on average.

The UN agency said that 143 Palestinian children have been killed in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel sparked the war in Gaza , compared with 41 Palestinian children killed from January to September 2023.

Two Israeli children were also killed in the West Bank in conflict-related violence during the same period, UNICEF said, adding that more than 440 Palestinian children have also been injured with live ammunition.

“For years now, children living in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have been exposed to horrific violence ,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “The situation has deteriorated significantly, coinciding with the escalation of hostilities inside Gaza. We are seeing frequent allegations of Palestinian children being detained on their way home from school or shot while walking on the streets . The violence needs to stop now.”

Living in fear every day

Child casualties have been reported in 10 out of 11 governorates in the occupied West Bank; more than half of the killings were in Jenin, Tulkarm and Nablus. “ These areas have seen an increase in large and militarized law enforcement operations over the past two years , indicating a shift in intensity and scope,” UNICEF explained.

“The increasing tensions in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are also impacting the physical and mental well-being of thousands of children and families, who are now living in daily fear for their lives. Children report being scared to walk around their neighbourhoods or to travel to school.”

Prior to 7 October 2023, children in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, were already exposed to the highest levels of violence in 20 years, UNICEF maintained, with 41 Palestinian children and six Israeli children killed in the first nine months of last year. They have also been heavily affected by movement and access restrictions that disrupted their daily lives.

UNICEF renewed its call for parties to immediately end and prevent further grave violations against children, including the killing and maiming of children. Parties must adhere to their obligations under international law to protect children. Children’s right to life must be upheld and children should never be the target of violence, no matter who or where they are.

“The true cost of the violence in the State of Palestine and Israel will be measured in children’s lives, those lost and those forever changed by it,” said Ms. Russell. “What the children desperately need is an end to violence and a lasting political solution to the crisis, so that they can reach their fullest potential in peace and safety.”
