2. Fully Funded PhD Position in SPACE/TERRESTRIAL COMMS AND SECURITY

In space communication infrastructures (satellite/UAV/High-altitude platform systems) there can be a wide variety of open integration options with terrestrial network platforms, introducing distinct research challenges in performance, energy efficiency and security and privacy in different scenarios. Network resources provided by global satellite communication systems can be simultaneously shared by multiple regional terrestrial networks, and hence, a PhD project on this topic will address key research questions on how we can engineer novel secure/resilient and high performing solutions against potential attacks whilst optimising the system performance.

Follow us for daily updates!

3. fully funded phd position in secure and trustworthy hardware.

We need to ensure that the hardware that will underpin future comms infrastructure is secure and trustworthy. Cyber vulnerabilities in hardware cannot be easily patched (unlike software). PhD projects on this topic will address the open research challenge of how to deliver trusted and resilient hardware for future fully virtualised communications systems. Research into post-quantum cryptography and linking advanced cryptographic approaches (e.g identity-based encryption) and hardware security to achieve hardware-rooted security could provide verifiability, anti-tampering, anti-counterfeiting properties to future communication infrastructures.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in TRUSTWORTHY AI FOR SECURE FUTURE OPEN NETWORKS

In recent years, AI has been proposed as a powerful tool for automating network management and orchestration operations. In the context of future open NoN-environments, interconnected or integrated network components contributed from homogeneous or heterogeneous operators (terrestrial, space, cloud/edge hyperscale providers…) are expected to be managed through distributed AI-based network intelligence with their own local operation policies and resolve possible AI-conflicts.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-ASSISTED PHYSICAL LAYER SECURITY

Traditional approaches in research of the physical layer of communication systems and their security rely on rigorous mathematical modelling of the system and environment. Such approaches rely on various simplifications that undermine the fidelity of the models and the efficiency of the designs in highly dynamic wireless environments. As the complexity of the environment, and the demand for more efficient and adaptable/reconfigurable physical layers, increases in the context of 5G and 6G, traditional approaches become less effective.

6. fully funded phd position in real-time patient flow management in hospital emergency departments.

Discrete event simulation (DES) is a method used to model the operation of a system as a sequence of events in discrete time [1]. It is often used to model healthcare systems because it can represent complexity and randomness in patient ow as a network of activities (e.g., triage, treatment) and queues (e.g., waiting for triage, waiting for treatment, waiting for a bed to become available) [2]. Once a model is developed, it can be used for scenario analysis, e.g. it could assess the impact of putting a hospital on ambulance divert on patient waiting times.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in SIGNS, SIMULATION AND CYBER TWINS

This project seeks to examine the pedagogical value of examining digital spaces within the boundaries and frameworks of archaeology. By examining the intersection between digitised society, digital twinning, the hyperreal, and heritage this project will expand the scope of current archaeology exploring new possibilities for archaeology practice.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in QUANTUM VISUALISATION WITH SINGLE PHOTON EMITTERS

This PhD project aims to harness the capabilities of solid-state emitters for integration with photonic devices and connecting them through an optical channel known as a waveguide. When coupled with the waveguide, emitters can interact with guided electromagnetic modes, exchanging energy and information. The term ‘cooperativity’ signifies the extent of their interaction with the guided mode and the mode’s capability to mediate interactions between distant individual emitters [1-3]. The research objective is to investigate the degree to which cooperative interactions among waveguide-coupled emitters enable them to withstand external decoherence effects in solid-state hosts.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in PREDICTION OF THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF A SALINE INTRUSION IN A TIDALLY INFLUENCED COASTAL AQUIFER

This project compliments the work of the EPSRC funded SALINA project, a collaboration between Queens University and Imperial College London and its associated collaborators. It will directly investigate at laboratory scale, using both experiment and simulations, the influence that the tidal cycle and extreme tidal events has on the movement a saline intrusion interface within an aquifer.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in APPLICATION OF ULTRA-HIGH RESOLUTION GEOPHYSICAL DATA

The growth in windfarm planning to meet net-zero sustainability targets means that large swaths of continental shelf offshore the UK are experiencing a renaissance in the collection of geophysical data. The shallow geology of the UK continental shelf is complicated by the the nature of landscape processes over the last ~500,000 years, meaning that it needs detailed investigation before windfarms can be sited, which requires the building of ground models from geological data.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in GROUNDWATER RESIDENCE TIMES FOR PEATLAND RESTORATION

Upland areas, covered by blanket bog, form the principal source of water for many towns and cities across Britain and Ireland, with approximately 85% of all drinking water derived from peatlands worldwide consumed in here1. Recent surveys have revealed that almost all catchment areas providing this water are degraded by human activity and now provide raw (untreated) water with elevated levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC)2. The cost of DOC removal has led water companies to use peatland restoration to improve raw water quality.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in THE RE-WIND MODEL

This PhD project offers the opportunity to work with the Re-Wind Network and the spin-off company BladeBridge to develop a UK wide geospatial supply chain approach for wind blade repurposing, containing embedded design options and their environmental, economic and social impacts. As such the project is closely linked to the Re-Wind Network which includes researchers from Georgia Tech (USA), Queen’s University Belfast (UK), University College Cork and Munster Technological University (Ireland), and our spin-off company BladeBridge. The goal of the US-Ireland funded Re-Wind Project was to compare sustainable end–of–life (EOL) reuse and recycling strategies for composite material wind turbine blades using a Geographic Information Science (GIS) platform coupled with environmental, economic and social Life–Cycle Assessments (LCA).

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in INVESTIGATION OF BASALT REINFORCED DIGITAL PRINTED (BRDP) STRUCTURES

This project aims to explore innovative reinforcement methods for digitally manufactured concrete structures using basalt composites. 3D concrete printing, a groundbreaking technology within digital concrete manufacturing, is driving a paradigm shift in the traditionally low-tech construction sector. The emergence of digital concrete manufacturing offers unparalleled flexibility, speed, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional methods. As the construction industry accounts for 13% of global expenditure but has an annual growth rate of only 1%, digitalization will boost productivity and open new possibilities for architects, engineers, and construction professionals.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in SEISMIC EVALUATION OF THE FLEXIARCH USING STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING (SHM)

However, holistic applications (Engineering Resource Planning – ERP, manufacturing Resource Planning – MRP) can often be limited by a need for customisation to suit the specific needs of individual organisations at a shop floor level where proven in-house processes have been developed over a number of years. At best, poor management of the interfaces between legacy approaches and new COTS, Industry 4.0 compliant systems, results in process delays and in-accuracies.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in low emissions aircraft

This will be a computational PhD investigating new approaches for simulating the whole powerplant system under a wheels-up landing event. This will require investigating how best to model the engine, pylon and nacelle components in such a way that enables understanding of how the components interact with each other during a dynamic impact event such as wheels-up landing, and enable prediction of how the impact loads are transferred and dissipated throughout the powerplant structure. Key to addressing this challenge is identifying the appropriate level of detail to include in the model – managing the trade-off between rapid simulation that is necessary for exploring numerous novel aircraft concepts, and accuracy of the simulation output.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biological Sciences

In dairy cattle, the transition period is critical for health, fertility, and productivity of dairy cows. This period is characterised by drastic metabolic, immune and endocrine changes, rendering cows extremely susceptible to diseases with subsequent high incidences of infectious diseases such as mastitis, which lead to increased production costs (>£100 million/year in UK) due to treatment and post-infection reductions in milk yield due to udder damage. To maximise profitability from milk production, the dairy industry is increasingly focused on improving the efficiency of feed and animal production through the use of alternate, natural, non-antibiotic plant-based feed additives and their extracts commonly known as phytogenics or botanicals.

24. fully funded phd position in environmental change.

In our changing world, there’s a pressing need to embrace ‘smart’ technologies and approaches to predict how infrastructure will perform under environmental change. Transport infrastructure in circumpolar regions is particularly at risk from climate change; here ongoing changes in ground ice extent and associated hydrological fluctuations are directly impacting highways and other structures (e.g. via subsidence, cracking). Although of relatively simple design, remote northern highways are often of high socio-economic importance, forming the backbone of regional supply systems and vital transportation corridors for isolated indigenous communities.
