Pretty neat little American OVA featuring Hugh Jackman's Vatican-backed monster hunter in an adventure involving royal physician Dr. Henry Jekyll draining the souls of London's forgotten women in order to keep Queen Victoria mesmerized and supernaturally young. Cool possibly From Hell-inspired conspiracyish plot and some cool visual style, Van Helsing looks kind of like The Shadow. Almost certainly better than the movie it was created to promote.

Universal. DVD 1.78 :1 Color  Digital  12 A nice little prologue of the Van Helsing character with a decent amount of depth. Jackman's accent feels a little off but his voice work is great and dynamic with Wenham sounds and works well. The animation itself looks great and surprisingly violent throughout. It's twist on events in London was interesting but barely touched the surface.

I would have preferred this short cartoon to have developed into a Van Helsing movie because even this little bit we got is much better than the movie.

This short cartoon is a the story of Jack the Ripper combined with the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The cartoon starts mysteriously and provides a good basis for the further story, but due to its short duration, it quickly jumps to parts of the chase in order to make some kind of complete ending.

The animation is also well done, and I'm sorry that this cartoon isn't a bit longer, because it would have been much better and more popular.

Remember that Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie that was massive in 2004 and no ones really talked about it since? This was like a promo or cash in animated movie from around its release. It's not horrible, change the names of the characters and you're just watching an animated Batman movie.

Pretty cool, I actually this concept works better for animation than live action. I wish this were a series that got picked up.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment (2004) [short film, animation, action]

Demon hunter Gabriel Van Helsing is sent to London to investigate a series of mysterious murders. And soon he discovers a sinister plot that threatens the very heart of the nation…

This animated short film [30 minutes] does not really belong on my blog, because it is not a vampire film. Although with a lot of good will you could argue that you briefly catch sight of a vampire in one scene. The reason I reviewed this film was that it has been made as a direct prequel to the 2004 live action film Van Helsing .

That film featured a lot of vampires, of course. But, as you may remember, that Van Helsing character created by writer/director Stephen Sommers (who, along with his editor Bob Ducsay, is listed among the executive producers of this animated film) does not just hunt vampires but all sorts of demons – depending on the case his bosses assign him to. A decision no doubt taken with a view to possible sequels and spin-offs (which never materialised).

In the cold opening scene of the live action film, we saw Van Helsing battle Mr Hyde in Paris. This animated prequel is the story of the investigation that preceded this encounter in Paris; and the Paris scenes in the live action film thus serve as an epilogue to the animated short. So far, so complicated. What is interesting is that both the live action feature film and the animated short were released at the same time. So the productions must have been happening in a roughly parallel manner (which might explain how they managed to get many members the feature film cast to also voice their characters for the animation). Which means that the idea for the prequel was not an afterthought but existed more or less from the beginning; and I would really love to know what the thinking behind this was. Was this intended as a promotional vehicle for both the feature film and the computer game, thus justifying the production costs? Or was this short film made with the confident belief that it would make its money back on its own accord?

Be that as it may – and all my unnecessarily long “prequel-talk” aside – this short film also works perfectly well as a stand-alone. No-one encountering this film would feel lost just because they have not seen the live action film. The plot is self-contained, and it is rather well written and well told. I also like the animation style of the film, and well as its pacing. The only writing problem is the motivation of the Jekyll/Hyde character – a motivation on which the whole premise rests. It feels a bit silly, but since this is an animated film you are more likely to accept it than you would be in a “real” film.

There is little else to say about this short. I could see myself happily rating it at 7 out of 10. But as far as recommendations go, the fact that it is only 30 minutes long means that you have to consider what money you want to spend on it. Van Helsing: The London Assignment has been given its own, independent DVD release; and unless you can get a used copy for a buck (as I did), I am not sure the DVD is worth purchasing. This is, at the end of the day, a curio – some add-on material that by rights should be included in the bonus features of a DVD/BluRay release of the feature film (maybe it even is, today, in some cases, who knows?). As a stand-alone DVD it appears slightly preposterous, even though my Region1 DVD of Van Helsing: The London Assignment has been padded out with some bonus material; including one major featurette that has nothing to do with the animated film but is basically a “making-of” for the live-action film.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is an Animated “Diamond in the Rough”

Logo

While researching for my Van Helsing Mixes Monsters for Movie Magic post I found out that there was a cartoon short released in conjunction with the major motion picture. Van Helsing: The London Assignment tells the story of what Van Helsing is doing in the days leading up to the start of the film.

Van Helsing

Van Helsing

Van Helsing is on the trail of a vicious London-based murderer who not only kills his lovely female victims, but leaves their bodies twisted and mummified. But even after this string of heinous crimes, the order to which Van Helsing belongs demands that he try to capture the fiend and save his soul from damnation.

Hyde on train

Hyde on train

He soon meets the monster, none other than the giant Mr. Hyde who helps Hugh Jackman open the live-action movie. In an interesting twist, Dr. Jekyll is every bit as evil (or even eviler) than his alter ego, but he is doing all in the name of love.

gargoyle

I called this 30 minute short a “diamond in the rough” because a lot of the animation is jerky and reminiscent of Hanna Barbara cartoons (no offense Scooby Doo!) with intermittent flashes of brilliance. The action sequences clearly got more love (or maybe just a bigger budget) than other scenes, which is to be expected, but it was kind of distractingly lopsided. That being said, it is a fun story that made me alternatingly chuckle and say “whoa!” It really felt like a noir comic book come to life, which was cool to see.

Balloon

There is a nice documentary in the special features about the making of the live-action movie which is really cool. I learned that both Kate Beckingsale and Hugh Jackman did most if not all of their own amazing stunts.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment

van helsing the london assignment rotten tomatoes

Ever since The Matrix made a killing selling animated add-ons to its sequels called “The Animatrix” everyone has been out to cash in by re-treading the same idea, even though The Matrix sequels themselves are now regarded as somewhat of a failure. Van Helsing: London Assignment is just another iteration in a never ending trend of copycatting as a way to squeeze as much money as possible out of potential fans pockets. Only, how many seriously hardcore fans does a movie like Van Helsing actually have? Not enough to justify releasing a half-hour animated feature on DVD. But they’ve gone ahead and done it anyway. Van Helsing: London Assignment is something of a prequel to the theatrical movie that debuted this summer to mediocre reception and initially strong, but fast fading box office numbers. If you saw it, like me you probably enjoyed it. If you didn’t, you probably don’t feel like you missed out on anything… and will no doubt live happy lives without giving it another thought. But interested or no, London Assignment picks up right before the movie begins, with an animated Van Helsing (voiced by Hugh Jackman ) in his first encounter with the infamous Mr. Hyde. For this adventure, he’s again accompanied by the mousey friar inventor Carl. Of course if you’ve seen the movie this makes absolutely no sense since Carl’s first encounter with Van Helsing comes in the movie… maybe I should shut up, it’s just a cartoon. Shut up it’s just a cartoon seems to be London Assignment’s general philosophy, with the story shooting all over the map in tone and scattered storytelling being the order of the day. At times it’s pretty gory, no doubt trying to sucker in all those rabid anime fans and their disturbing obsession with blood. If that’s their goal, they’ll probably succeed, because bad animation without coherent plot progression and lots of entrails is generally standard fare for most of the beloved anime hanging around out there. Maybe this thing just wasn’t created for me. Anyway, Mr. Hyde’s dastardly plot is to murder young women, steal their souls, feed those souls to the Queen of England, make the Queen of England young, beautiful and stupid, and then marry her so he can presumably have sex with her in wedlock, thus avoiding pissing off god. Mr. Hyde’s lair is hell… or something that is a close approximation of hell and coincidentally exists in the basement of Buckingham Palace. You’d think the palace guards might notice the smell of sulphur. So Van Helsing tracks down the monster, shoots off all sorts of gadgets, sprays Holy Water, things happen and Mr. Hyde’s evil and confusing plot is defeated. Oh and Hyde turns into Dr. Jekyll once in awhile. I mean really, what’s the point here? The only good thing about London Assignment is the voice acting. So often in these things they get lame impersonators to mimic the voices of the actors who made the characters famous. But both David Wenham and Hugh Jackman show up to voice their characters. Heck, they don’t’ just show up, they do a fantastic job. Both sound like they’re really into it, which tells me that neither of them read the script in advance. Somewhere in the muddle of extra features thrown on this DVD, Hugh Jackman claims that they spent as much time making this thirty minute animated feature as they did on making the Van Helsing movie itself. This tells me that either they hired extremely slow animators or that Stephen Sommers is some sort of pepped up, high speed, super director because I can’t believe they spent more than a week or two creating London Assignment or the extra stuff on this disk. But first let’s talk about presentation. They let you skip the trailers. That’s always a good thing. On a budget release like this, you can’t take that for granted. Oh and the movie is on the disc… um and it’s clear I guess and also in widescreen. It’s just mediocre animation, I mean how much do you really care about things like visual quality or sound? You probably don’t, but it’s there and all done up typically sharp. Moving on, there’s some nice interviews with Hugh Jackman in which he deludes himself into thinking London Assignment is some great, important thing. He talks about how cool it is to be a cartoon character and then seems to be doing some sort of paid advertisement for London Assignment . Does he really believe it’s great? Hugh is such a nice guy, I think he’s just being generous. Still he’s affable and charismatic, so the interviews aren’t painful. He could be selling aspirin and I probably still wouldn’t mind listening. There’s extra info on Van Helsing the movie on here too in “Van Helsing: Behind the Screams”, a special which looks like it was designed to air on the WB and hosted by Josie Maran, one of the models who played as a luscious bride of Dracula in the film. Josie delivers all of her lines like she’s reading from cue cards, but stopped taking reading lessons some time after third grade. She’s pretty though, so whatever. Also included is a making of the Van Helsing video game… which is irrelevant and another feature called “Animatic to Animation”. Storyboards folks. Is there anything more boring than staring at storyboards? Ok, maybe production stills. Look, this isn’t a good cartoon none of you are going to buy the DVD, so what does it matter if it has extras? Actually, lets give them some credit for even bother with extras. I don’t think I would have.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is a 2004 action horror animated film by Universal Studios Home Video . It features the voices of Hugh Jackman , Kate Beckinsale , Tress MacNeille , Robbie Coltrane and David Wenham . The London Assignment is an animated prequel to the 2004 motion picture Van Helsing (released the same year). It tells of the events before the film.

Monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing and friar Carl travel to London to investigate a series of horrific, and decidedly supernatural murders, being committed by the mad scientist Dr. Jekyll, in the form of his evil alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. When tracing Hyde to his underground fortress, Van Helsing and Carl find a young woman who claims to be Queen Victoria, and they discover that Dr. Jekyll is in love with the Queen. In order to keep her young and thus immortal, she has been given a potion by Dr. Jekyll that turns her into a young woman for one night. But, in order to create the potion which causes the transformations, Dr. Jekyll needs the drained souls of his freshly killed victims and thus the killings will never stop.

Dr. Jekyll then kidnaps Victoria, using the Golden Jubilee Balloon to escape. Van Helsing uses his grappling gun to follow the balloon, then proceeds to board it. In the balloon, Dr. Jekyll becomes Mr. Hyde to kill Van Helsing and crashes the balloon in the process. While fighting on the in-construction Tower Bridge, Mr. Hyde is shot through the arm but manages to escape. Upon returning Victoria to Buckingham Palace , Van Helsing says that daybreak will break the enchantment, returning her to her real age.

To reward him, Victoria kisses him, at the precise moment of daybreak, causing her old self to slap him and call for guards. Van Helsing sends word back to Vatican City about what has happened while he tracks Jekyll to Paris .
