Writing essays is a skill you need to pass many high school classes and even college or university courses. However, not everyone has the greatest writing skills, and even then, great writers sometimes don’t have the time to write everything.
Plagiarism is another common concern when in school and should be taken seriously, considering it can get you kicked out of education. Instead of paying a hefty fee for essay writing services, take advantage of the best essay writing apps available to help you score your next A+.
Why software can help improve your essay writing
Using software, especially AI-powered platforms, can help streamline the writing process by offering features like templates, structured frameworks, content generation as well as grammar and spell-check.
Essay writing software allows you to organize your thoughts more effectively and often in a distraction-free work environment. They can also aid in enhancing the overall quality of your writing by offering savvy suggestions for improving sentence or paragraph structure, vocabulary usage and flow within your essays.

Elements of an A+ essay you can’t ignore
- Clear Thesis Statement: An A+ essay must have a strong and clear thesis statement that presents the main argument or point of view.
- Comprehensive Research: Extensive research with credible sources is crucial for providing in-depth analysis and supporting arguments effectively.
- Proper Structure and Formatting: The essay should have a well-organized structure with a logical flow of ideas from introduction to conclusion.
- Critical Analysis: Demonstrating critical thinking skills by evaluating information, presenting counter arguments, and offering insightful perspectives.
- Originality: Strive for original ideas and unique perspectives to set your essay apart and showcase intellectual creativity.

- Meticulous Proofreading: Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and overall writing mechanics to ensure clarity and coherence in your essay.
How to write a strong essay thesis
To write a strong essay thesis statement, you should begin by clearly identifying the main topic or argument of your essay. Your thesis statement should be concise and specific, providing a roadmap for the reader on what to expect in the rest of the paper.
Make sure your thesis is arguable and not a statement of fact. Next, consider the key points you want to make in support of your thesis. These points will guide the structure of your essay and should be logically organized for a coherent flow of ideas.
The final step in writing a strong essay thesis is to revise and refine it. This step is crucial because it allows you to improve the clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of your thesis statement.
During revision, pay attention to the language you have used and make sure it is precise and specific. Consider whether your thesis accurately reflects the main argument or topic of your essay.

11 Apps That Write Essays for You (and Improve Quality)
Last Updated on February 28, 2023 by Alex Birkett
Writing essays is a time-consuming task.
It requires research, structuring, formatting, and plenty of editing. As such, it’s no wonder that students often seek out help from external sources.
One of the most popular solutions in recent years are essay writing apps.
But what exactly are they? And do they work as advertised? Let’s dive into the details.
What Are Essay Writing Apps?
Essay writing apps are digital tools that help you to write better essays.
They typically come with features like spellcheckers, grammar checkers, and idea generators to help spur your writing process forward.
Some also offer pre-written content that you can use as a starting point for your own essay.
The idea is that these tools save you time and energy so you can focus on crafting great ideas instead of getting bogged down with tedious tasks like proofreading or finding research materials.
Do Essay Writing Apps Really Work?
The short answer is yes – but with some caveats.
While these apps can certainly be helpful in terms of providing assistance with proofreading and idea generation, they won’t be able to write entire essays for you from scratch like some people may believe.
Moreover, while some apps offer pre-written content that could be useful as a starting point for your essay, it’s important to remember that this isn’t an excuse to plagiarize or copy other people’s work without crediting them properly; if caught doing so, it could have serious consequences for your academic career.
What Are the Best Essay Writing Apps Available?
The best essay writing apps will have some of the following abilities:
- They generate net new content
- They help you format and ideate the structure of your essay
- They improve your writing style
- They have grammar, spelling, plagiarism, and style detection
- They can help you research factual information about the topic
- They’re “multi-purpose tools” that allow for custom functionalities
- They’re affordable.
I’ll judge the following of the best essay apps below on the above characteristics.
Editor’s note: I’m going to use some affiliate links when possible to try to earn some revenue from my content. These don’t change the opinions espoused in the content nor the style in which they are written. If I think a product sucks, I’m not going to say otherwise. This is just a bonus and a way to fund the whole operation. Anyway, enjoy the article!
11 Apps That Write Essays for You
- ProWritingAid
- Hypotenuse AI
Jasper is an AI-powered essay writing app that helps you organize, write, and format your essays faster.
It’s functionally an all-purpose AI text generator , with a Google Docs / MS Word style editor you can use in conjunction with custom commands.
You can also hook it up with Grammarly to find spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes, run on sentences, and other grammatical mistakes in real time.
They’ve got a few different modes (as part of their broader Boss Mode plan):
Focus mode is for pure writing, a simple word processor (but with an AI assistant attached). The focus writer is where I spend a lot of my time in this tool.
Chat mode is just like ChatGPT (more on that later)
SEO mode hooks up with Surfer SEO to give you keyword suggestions in addition to your regular spell checking and generative essay writer functionality.
And power mode unlocks all of their use case templates, recipes, and commands.
Overall, Jasper is hands down the most powerful AI writing software. Premium features like SEO mode, Chat mode, and Power mode are only available on their Boss Mode plan, so I’d opt for that one.
It does seem to struggle with research papers and reference materials, so make sure you’ve got your citations on lock before you start writing. They also lack a web clipper tool, but their browser extension tool does give you the ability to write content everywhere.
They also have drawing tools and art generation capabilities , by the way.
Price : Starts at $24/mo. Boss Mode plan begins at $49/month
G2 Score: 4.8/5
Frase is a web-based writing tool that uses AI to help writers create high-quality essays quickly.
They’ve got a whole suite of SEO tools , including a content brief and content research tool, content optimization software, and generative AI tools to help you write content.
Their content brief and research tool is of particular interest here.
Most of the best essay writing app options on this list focus only on text generation or rewriting; few focus on actually helping you format your piece in the first place, which is often where the hard work is.
Then, for their AI writing tool, they feature a ton of helpful templates, including “explain why,” “bullets to paragraphs,” and a metaphor / analogy tool:
Price: Only $14.99/mo ($12 per month when paid annually).
ChatGPT was launched in 2022 by OpenAI (the creators of GPT-3, which powers most of the writing software on this list).
It has brought generative AI to the mainstream, and it’s already one of the best writing apps for all purposes.
It acts as a chat interface, so it’s much more intuitive than many of the dedicated AI writing software out there.
Basically, you can ask it or prompt it to write…anything. I’ve used it to generate creative stories, write love poems, make me ideas for essays, improve my writing skills, and build outlines for SEO-focused content.
Let’s walk through a use case. I took a history class in college called “US history from 1945 to the present.” I’ll ask ChatGPT to create me some topic ideas:
Pretty good! I like the cold war idea, so I’ll ask it to create an outline for me:
Okay, maybe I’d want to change up a few pieces of this, but let’s go with it. Here’s the full essay:
Crazy! And that’s just a first pass. I could further tweak the outputs with better instructions.
This stuff is getting scary good.
Price: Free
G2 Score: NA
4. Writesonic
Writesonic is a YC-backed startup that makes generative AI tools capable of writing essays.
I’m a big fan of this product.
They’ve got a ton of ready-made templates to get you started out (including a few that are great for writing essays). They’ve also got a few templates that can help you improve your writing style or even rewrite content so its better formatted.
Finally, they’ve got a Google Docs style editor for long form writers so you can use commands and write alongside the AI.
G2 Score: 4.8/5
Copy AI is another AI copywriting tool built on top of GPT-3.
It primarily writes essays through use case templates. A few that are popular for the writing process include:
- Essay intro
- Essay outline
- Explain like I’m 5
- Sentence rewriter
- Analogy generator
For example, look at this need little essay writer app that lets you build an outline for your essay:
The sentence rewriter and analogy generator are two examples that can help you improve your writing style.
Copy AI doesn’t have the same flexibility and power that Jasper and ChatGPT have, but it’s much easier to use. The templates are well set up and foolproof. And they have many that actually help you format text and design the scope of your piece, not just write it.
Overall, I’m a big fan of this tool.
Price: Free for up to 2000 words and then $49/mo for unlimited word counts.
6. ProWritingAid
ProWritingAid is a cool professional writing software that uses AI to generate content.
It’s great for academic papers and academic writing. Unlike many other essay writing services, this one incorporates grammar checking, spell check, style checking, plagiarism checking, and word count into the content they produce.
They’ve built custom solutions for higher education, teachers, non-native English speakers, and creatives.
I like this one because it lets users create content from scratch, but it’s also got features to improve your writing (this is powerful for college students especially).
Got some handwritten notes that you want to whip up into a good essay? This one is great at processing hand written notes and producing great content.
Pro Writing Aid works via browser, but they’ve got integrations that allow for offline access and desktop software as well – such as a Scrivener integration and an MS Word integration.
Overall, a great product with a free app that allows for up to 500 words.
Price: Completely free for up to 500 words, and then $10 per month for unlimited use.
G2 Score: 4.5/5
7. Speedwrite
Speedwrite is one of the most popular writing applications out there. It helps you write essays from scratch as well as rephrasing your existing content.
How’s it work? Basically, through “predictions.” You just enter text and hit the “predict” button (they call their text generations “predictions”). This then takes your content and paraphrases it using their artificial intelligence.
This makes it useful for everything from writing notes to polishing up existing texts.
They’ve got tons of users (roughly 500k+). They claim to have written millions of lines of text, and all of this is fresh, original content with good style and grammar.
While Speedwrite has some downsides (it’s not great with structured diagrams or starting with a blank page), it’s still popular. Anyway, there are a ton of great Speedwrite alternatives you can check out.
One cool thing is you can use this tool completely free.
Here’s an example of a “prediction” based on the above text.
Price: Free and the only $19.99 per month
Lex is a new AI writer that I’ve just started trying out. I love it so far.
It’s different from the others. It’s aimed at writers. Many of the other tools help non-writers produce content. This one is no-frills, just a Google Docs / Microsoft Word style editor and an auto complete functionality.
And to be honest: the outputs are pretty darn good. I only write the first two sentences here and then let Lex finish it:
Lex can also be used on both ios devices as well as android devices (instructions in the app).
As far as I know, the tool is free, but I’m sure they’ll introduce a standard pricing model soon. You have to get on a waitlist to get access.
Price : Free
G2 Score: NA
Rytr is a similar tool to Jasper, Copy AI, and Writesonic. It was also built on GPT-3 technology, so it’s got many of the same outputs and templates as these tools.
The biggest difference with Rytr is its price. They’re one of the most affordable apps that write essays for you, starting at just $9/mo (plus a free plan).
This is a great starter app.
Price: free, and then $9/mo
G2 Score: 4.7/5
10. Hypotenuse AI
Hypotenuse AI started out as an ecommerce-focused AI tool, but it has since expanded.
Like other tools on this list, they’ve got one of the best essay writing capabilities out there.
The reason I’m adding them to this list, though, is their content detective feature. This allows you to research content with citations. Most tools suffer from factual inaccuracies, which is obviously a huge problem when it comes to academic writing.
Hypotenuse is working to solve that, and for that, I applaud them.
Price: Starts at $24/mo
G2 Score: 4.4/5
11. Word AI
Word AI is a sweet tool built for two things: content rewriting, and scale.
You can essentially do like 1000 rewrites based on your initial content. This is helpful for SEO folks hoping to do link building and guest posting at scale.
For the essay writers among us? It’s great for coming up with clear copy and rewriting your piece to enrich your text, split sentences, and improve the clarity of your writing.
I will say, transparently, this is not one of my favorite tools out there. I think it’s a little clunky for most use cases and it’s best for spinning up a ton of content for SEO.
However, I wanted to include it on the list because it’s one of the best at content production at scale.
Price: $57/month
G2 Score: 3.9/5
At the end of the day, essay writing apps can be incredibly useful resources if used correctly by students or writers who need assistance crafting their stories or arguments more effectively and efficiently than ever before.
However, it’s important to remember that these tools don’t replace actual human effort – they’re meant to supplement it – so make sure not to rely too heavily on them or allow them to take away from the creativity in your own work!
In that way, “apps that write essays for you” is sort of a myth. You’ll still need to provide the human intelligence 🙂
With all this in mind, don’t forget to do your own research into which app is right for you before committing – good luck!

Benefits of using AI essay writing vs. manually writing essays
Manual essay writing is challenging and time-consuming. You need to do a lot of research, create an outline, cite the sources, and a lot more. But with AI essay writing apps, it’s easy as 1, 2, 3.
AI essay writing apps analyze the text and then write an essay on any chosen topic. These apps can complete several jobs, including selecting keywords for the essay, adding transition words between paragraphs, organizing information according to argumentative structure, and distinguishing between facts and opinions to avoid mistakes like spelling mistakes or incorrect tenses.
Most AI writing apps work similarly: you enter a topic, and the program provides you with a thesis statement. You then need to input the supporting points for that thesis, and the AI app will generate accurate and unique essays based on your information and you can then edit them as per your preference.
These are some of the best apps that write essays for you. However, the one that stands out is Smodin due to several reasons.

- Turtle Truths about Writing
Photo by Jakob Owens on Unsplash If you’d like to receive my blog in your in-box each week, click here .
I heard a memorable analogy this week about life: that most of us approach it as if we are captaining a superyacht, mastering the unpredictable seas and going wherever we like, whereas really we’re all simply on a kayak at the mercy of the wind and the waves.
“To be human, according to this analogy, is to occupy a little one-person kayak, borne along on the river of time towards your inevitable yet unpredictable death. It’s a thrilling situation, but also an intensely vulnerable one: you’re at the mercy of the current, and all you can really do is to stay alert, steering as best you can, reacting as wisely and gracefully as possible to whatever arises from moment to moment.”
In a delightful synchronicity, I read this while vacationing in Antigua this past week spending every morning kayaking over the Caribbean. (Please do feel free to be envious, as the trip was every bit as paradisical as you might imagine, but do know that it’s my first real vacation in years and it was much needed.)
The analogy was from Oliver Burkeman’s newsletter , one of my favorites, by one of my favorite writers on productivity and approach to life ( Four Thousand Weeks ), and it lingered with me as I paddled every morning over waters that, yes, really were this turquoise.
Every morning I checked out my kayak from the dive shop with a mission: I wanted to see some sea turtles.
The First Writing Lesson
Years ago I volunteered with an organization called Turtle Time , dedicated to the recovery and protection of marine turtles, and I’ve been enamored of these magnificent creatures ever since.
While out on a Hobie Cat one afternoon with one of the employees at the resort where we were staying, we learned that there were sea grasses along a certain stretch near this cliff where the turtles could often be found feeding, so each morning I paddled about 30 minutes to get there and then just let my kayak drift around the area for another 30 or 40, waiting to see some turtles.
And waiting. And waiting.
On day two I heard another resort guest drifting by on a paddleboard 20 yards away crow delightedly to her companion about the turtle that had just swum up alongside her board. My brother, with whom I was vacationing (long story involving a divorce and one very lucky sister) came back from his daily dive trips reporting on the ones he’d seen.
One morning I saw a flipper pop up, long gone by the time I paddled the 25 feet to where it was. Another morning I saw a head surface, a beautiful gentle Nessie quickly submerged before I got anywhere in the vicinity.
On my third day out, still free of the gentle, peaceful communing with a passing turtle that I craved, I realized that I was spending so much time searching for the turtles that I wasn’t letting myself simply enjoy everything else I was experiencing on the water: the sparkling sea beneath me, its gentle splash against the hull of my kayak, the pleasure and satisfaction of exercising my muscles to pull me across the stretch of shoreline. The sun on my shoulders, the breeze across my skin. The many other sights to see, like the way the water funneled through the rocks at the base of the cliff where I drifted, the graceful squid darting through the shallows, the silver mullet that burst from the water and danced 10 yards across its surface while I enjoyed the show and the enchantment of it.
My writing lesson from this: Sometimes you can get so focused on your goals that you forget to simply enjoy the pleasure of what you’re actually doing.
The Second Lesson
As calm as the Caribbean was on our side of the island, once you paddled past the windbreak of the cliffs the wind was pretty potent. I found it took every bit of strength my trainer and I have spent five years developing in my upper body for me to get the kayak where I wanted to go.
One of my dive-shop buddies watched me manhandle (or womanhandle, more accurately) the craft back to shore as I came in one day, and told me to stop fighting the wind. I was wearing myself out, he said, whereas if I followed the wind more it might take me longer to get where I wanted to go, tacking back and forth with it rather than in the straight line I was insisting on, but I would maintain much more of my energy.
When I followed his advice on subsequent days he was right, of course. Even though tacking extended my time paddling, I could do it much longer and much more easily if I stopped fighting where the wind was pushing me and instead took the zigzagging path it dictated. I still got where I wanted to go, and I didn’t wear myself out on the journey.
My writing lesson from this: In writing, and in a writing career, there are often plenty of forces pushing against you as you push toward where you want to go. Trying to fight them head on is only going to wear you out so you can’t complete the journey. Let yourself be pushed “off course” a bit if it lets you use those forces to help propel you. Even if it takes you longer than you hoped, you’ll be able to maintain your strength to stay the course long-term.
The Third Lesson…?
One day, chatting with one of my new local buddies, he mentioned a bay he knew of where turtles frequently came to feed, and offered to take me there.
So that day, instead of my usual vigil at the sea grasses near the cliffs, we traveled across the island to a quiet and beautiful inlet we mostly had to ourselves, and plunged right into the water with our snorkels and fins.
For 15 minutes or more I swam behind my friend, no turtles to be seen. But I’d learned my lessons well by that point. Even if we didn’t see one, I decided, I’d let myself enjoy the experience.
We saw a couple of stingrays burrowing into the sand, watched them glide away as we neared. Schools of fish darted by and along my body, unconcerned as I joined their group for a little way. The grasses in the relatively shallow water swayed in the green sea, and I let myself relish the feeling of finning smoothly through it as if I were one of the sea creatures surrounding me, feeling happy and satisfied.
And then, out of the soft green haze around us…a turtle, hovering over a patch of grass and calmly regarding us as we swam nearby.
As he pushed himself along through the water with impossible grace, I followed along behind, my new turtle friend content to allow me to swim along in his wake.
A little later, another one, and another—none of the turtles seeming to mind us swimming nearby. As I finned along behind one, we rose to the top together, our heads surfacing simultaneously and then dipping back down below, until I ran out of air and went back to the surface and he swam on alone. (You can watch my video of it on Facebook or Insta .)
I suppose there’s a lesson here about being willing to try new waters if the ones you are rowing don’t offer what you hoped for…or maybe about accepting what you get for its own pleasure, whether or not it matches what you were so hungry for.
But at that point my heart was too full to worry about lessons. I was grateful for all of it: every day I’d spent kayaking in fruitless search and yet enjoying every moment; every time I shared the underwater world for a brief time with those who lived in it on each of our several snorkel trips that week; the new friendships formed on my quest…and the magic timeless moments swimming with the turtles.

To paraphrases the author and teacher Ryan Hardy, backstory is comparable to swimming. You swim along the surface of the water, then dive down into backstory, then come back up to the surface. This analogy works because a) it implies there’s “something” underneath you need to bring to the surface, b) you can only stay underwater so long, so you can’t make your backstory too long, and c) if you dive into backstory, you have to come back to the present story.
That is a fantastic analogy–a great reminder that backstory isn’t the story (even though it underlies everything in the story). I’m borrowing that imagery! 🙂 Thanks, Aline.

I jumped off a boat in Belize and landed too close to a giant sea turtle. I thought I’d hit the thing kicking away, so I froze while it swam by me, reaching its head to nip at me. It missed! Since I didn’t get bit, it was an unforgettable experience. I’m going to Cano Island near Costa Rica to snorkel in January.
Oh, wow…! Hope you have a wonderful time in Costa Rica–I lived there for a summer many years ago and fell in love with all of it.

I was out of town on a hiking adventure yesterday through abandoned train tunnels, so I’m seeing this a day late. What a heartwarming turtle tale. You actually had my heart racing as I cheered for you to find those wonderful creatures, but I also appreciated the lessons as your eyes opened to all else that was around you. See the moment’s value and cherish it. Memories make us rich, but not if we aren’t present in the moment. As writers, this is all the more important. I’m so glad the turtles are thriving!
Wow, that sounds like an excellent off-day adventure you had! And also slightly creepy. 🙂 Thanks for the comments, Christina–it was really a memorable experience–I keep thinking about it!

If you’re going to describe that place as so wonderful, I get to be envious. I’m glad you got your vacation and even gladder that you wrote about it. I used to dive in those turquoise waters, I still miss it, and I’ll never forget it.
Oh, Bob, you get to be as envious as you like–I can imagine you must miss diving those waters. It was my first time there and I already do too. It’s just stunning. Get yourself back there! It’s still waiting for you….

Computers and Writing 2025
May 15–18 | University of Georgia
Call for Papers
Athens, Greece is credited as the birthplace of the Western rhetorical tradition. Home of the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia was established intentionally as a university town, self-consciously named as an homage to the home of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle and his Academy. While our Athens does continue the enthusiastic athletic tradition of Aristotle’s Athens, we’re more interested in extending our rhetorical forebearers’ study of rhetoric and writing technologies.
The 2025 Computers and Writing Conference’s theme is "Agency and Authorship." We invite proposals that consider how computers and technologies impact concepts of writerly influence and identity, which might include "slow rhetoric," craft, experiential pedagogy, rhetoric tied to non-human actants, assessment and agency, social justice and written voice, and practices and platforms.
The 2025 conference will emphasize place and how specific locales work with digital technologies to provide platforms for expressions of agency borne out of lived, place-based experience. Such consideration for the relationships between place, writing, and the digital world call us to reconsider what it means to come together for this conference in a particular place. Adding to the regular conference programming, attendees will self-select to participate in a field experience in or around Athens, GA that emphasizes the rhetorics of particular places and how their inhabitants enact authorship and agency.
While artificial intelligence, and large language models in particular, are significant and ongoing subjects of consideration for teacher-scholars of digital writing, we encourage participants to theorize specific applications, concerns, or recommendations for machine-learning tools, or to consider approaches to the conference theme that work around or beyond AI. This conference and the conversations it fosters have existed for decades, and we also encourage proposals that connect to the historic concerns of rhetoricians and scholars of computers and writing.
In evaluating proposals, the organizers will favor fully conceived panels of 3-4 speakers over individual papers, though individual proposals are still welcomed.
Proposals Might Address:
- What does it mean to experience agency through writing, whether online or offline?
- How do technologies adjust our notions of the relationship between rhetoric and craft?
- How do particular places seed/support/sustain rhetorical and creative practices?
- Do we need a slow rhetoric?
- How do technologies, enforce, or challenge existing power structures and hierarchies?
- How do we discuss or enact AI writing practices in the face of climate change and political turmoil?
- How can community engaged and place-based pedagogies intersect with the virtual to create connections across boundaries?
- How do writing technologies impede, foster, or expand agency and access for marginalized populations?
- Can AI assume authorial identity? Or, at the very least, how might AI defamiliarize the concept of an author and what it means to “author” a text?
- How does rhetorical agency inform lived experience—and what are the ways in which digital technologies mediate/manifest/manipulate this relationship?
Proposal Submission Deadline: November 22, 2024

We Were Home Internet Novices Until We Started Writing About It. What We Learned Might Surprise You
Broadband doesn't need to be complicated. Here's the basics of what you should know about home internet.
To most of us, the internet is a mystery. The internet has become a cornerstone of our lives and the way we communicate. But most of us don’t know the first thing about how it works, how to pick a good internet provider and how to spot throttling or sneaky hidden fees.
As new CNET broadband writers, we had a lot to learn about the overwhelming world of the internet and about internet providers in a short amount of time. After writing about the internet practically every day, doing research and interviewing spokespeople from the industry, we learned a thing or two that might surprise you. That's why we felt compelled to write this piece and hopefully answer some of your unanswered questions.
We’re here to help demystify the internet, starting with the basics.
Locating local internet providers
Trisha: At the beginning of this year, I couldn't really tell you the difference between download and upload speeds or figure out how much speed my household actually uses. While I am a college graduate now, the only time home internet would cross my mind were moments when I would be trying to finish up a paper, and my internet would suddenly stop working , or if I was struggling with slow and inconsistent speeds , deterring the work I was trying to accomplish. But after joining the CNET broadband team, I realized there's more to your home internet than just the speeds. My family and I have used different internet service providers, including Spectrum and Verizon Fios . If I had known what I know now, I could have helped my family choose the right ISP. Knowing where to start might be hard, but picking out the right internet service provider doesn't have to be complicated.
Cierra: It’s difficult for me to imagine living in a world before the internet. Dial-up is a mystery to me. So are the caches of early websites from the early 2000s . I got my first phone when I was 13 (an iPhone 4, pink case), a bit late by today’s standards, and ever since, I’ve been chronically online. A few months ago, if you’d asked me to explain how the internet works and why it matters, I would’ve been stumped for words. Ask me now, and there’s still a lot I don’t know, but I have a much better grasp on the technology that allows us to get online, as well as the confusing and frustrating antics of internet service providers and how they can make paying for basic internet service a headache.
If you have questions about your monthly bills and you want to outsmart your internet provider and get the most out of your internet usage, we're here to break it down for you.
How does the internet work?
The most fundamental question about the internet is, of course, about how it actually works . You may be surprised to learn that the internet relies on a vast network of fiber optic cables that transmit data through light signals. Yes, light signals. You’re reading this now and can binge Season 3 of The Bear because of the data transmitted by light signals, which connected your router to a much bigger network of cables, some of which travel underneath the sea .
Truthfully, you don’t need to know how the internet works on a technical level to use it. But the trick to knowing how your internet provider can charge you an extra $12 monthly for an infrastructure fee , as well as the key to boosting your internet speeds lies in understanding how the broadband network operates.
The internet, put simply, is one large network consisting of many interconnected public and private networks, routers, data servers and computers that communicate across the network using established protocols.
The internet is considered a wide area network (also called an interconnected network) and is a worldwide connection of millions of computer networks using millions of routers and data servers to accommodate a single request. Like ours, your head will start to spin if you try to disentangle just where this labyrinth of connections begins and ends. Even if parts of the backbone of the internet were to falter, the internet would continue to exist because of the sheer magnitude of the network.
The Pew Research Center breaks it down very simply, offering three main tiers of the broadband industry's network:
- The backbone: Remember those undersea cables we mentioned? They are essentially the backbone of the internet's infrastructure. They carry around 99% of data traffic across oceans and continents, funneling it into data centers and servers.
- The middle mile: The network that extends from the large data centers where information is processed all the way to "the last mile." A group of big ISPs owns this section of the broadband network, and it can be either a fixed wireless method of transporting data (like satellite or 5G) or a wired network. A good example of the middle mile in action is Google Fiber's extensive fiber network expanding through Charlotte, North Carolina .
- The last mile: An internet service provider secures the connection between the middle-mile network and the internet in your house. The last mile is accomplished either via cable (fiber-optic, copper or coaxial) or through a fixed wireless setup and is maintained through one subscription, e.g., your $50 monthly bill from Spectrum . The last mile is one of a broadband network's most expensive and contentious tiers. According to data from the FCC , 40% of Americans only have access to one internet provider, meaning that customers don't have many options regarding what internet services they can access.
Of course, there are a lot more complicated steps and established protocols that allow our devices to connect to the internet and send data back and forth. The main thing to know is that the companies that own networks on the various tiers of the broadband network determine how fast your internet connection can be.
Bandwidth, measured in megabits per second , is determined by how congested a network is. If your ISP owns a big chunk of the network, they may not have to throttle your speeds or charge extra monthly fees, unlike smaller ISPs, which may be paying to use networks owned by a bigger company.
What is the difference between Wi-Fi and Ethernet?
Wi-Fi and Ethernet are both ways to access the internet. The primary difference between the two is that Wi-Fi is wireless while Ethernet is a wired connection and will always provides faster internet speeds than a Wi-Fi connection because of the direct connection to an internet router.
There are obvious pros and cons to using an Ethernet cable. Although an Ethernet connection offers a much more consistent, secure and faster connection, Ethernet cables are pretty inconvenient and impractical: you don't want to connect your laptop or smartphone to an Ethernet cable every time you're trying to access the internet, do you? But if you're a gamer , however, an Ethernet connection is a sure way to get low latency and fast speeds. Plus you can incorporate an Ethernet cable into your gaming setup pretty easily.
Because Wi-Fi is not a physical link to your router, it's much more subject to congestion or slow speeds. Usually, the speed you get over Wi-Fi is often determined by the capabilities of your router or other equipment like Wi-Fi extenders or mesh networks . It’s much more convenient to use Wi-Fi, but if you’re having trouble with slow internet speeds (even if you're paying for multigig-level service), consider optimizing your Wi-Fi network with a few easy steps .
How do you choose the right ISP for your home?
Now that we’ve covered the basics, this next part comes down to three words: research , research, research . Knowing what to research is key, and it might even reduce the experience of decision paralysis.
Know your internet options
- Fiber : Fiber should be at the top of your list if you're looking for speed. Unlike other connection types, fiber offers symmetrical download and upload speeds. In addition, fiber is typically the more cost-efficient option since most fiber providers don't dole out price increases after a year. To learn more, read Cierra's deep dive on fiber internet .
- Cable : According to the latest data from the Federal Communications Commission , over 82% of households nationwide are covered by a cable connection. A cable connection is a go-to option for many households as it offers the widest availability out of any internet connection type. The downside is that cable providers are notorious for hiking their prices . On average, cable plans start at $50 a month. However, you can expect that price to increase after a year, sometimes by double the amount.
- Fixed wireless and 5G : Both rely on cellular phone signals and are vulnerable to network congestion and disruption. However, a fixed wireless connection is a better option than the inconsistent unreliable speeds from a satellite or DSL connection.
- DSL : Besides satellite , DSL might be one of the few options available to those who live in rural areas. DSL, also known as a "digital subscriber line," runs through copper phone lines. While DSL is a step above a satellite connection in terms of reliability, it still delivers very slow speeds ranging from 10 to 100Mbps.
- Satellite : This internet connection type usually ranks last in our list due to its inconsistency and unreliability. However, it's one of the only options that is accessible to those who live in rural areas. Satellite ISPs like Hughesnet , Viasat , and newcomer Starlink all have one thing in common: slower speeds. It's no match to what fiber or cable can offer. However, out of the three, Starlink boasts the fastest speeds, whereas Hughesnet is the more affordable option.
Find what's available in your area
Simply put, finding the right ISP starts by looking at what's available in your area. You can narrow your search by utilizing resources such as the FCC's Broadband Map , which displays various providers' coverage. This map also highlights information like internet connection types and the speeds offered. The top internet providers by availability in the country are T-Mobile Home Internet , Xfinity , Spectrum , AT&T and Verizon . Still, it all depends on where you are. For instance, Verizon Fios is available only in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic regions, whereas T-Mobile's 5G home internet service offers a wider availability, covering approximately 70% of the country. Most ISPs also have coverage maps on their websites, highlighting their service areas. Don't hesitate to seek them out.
Be picky with your hard passes
While availability is usually the deal-breaker for most, in other cases, being picky about what you want and don’t want out of your service is important, too. For instance, you have to factor in whether an ISP offers no contracts , unlimited data and charges for equipment fees. Most ISPs charge between $10 and $15 monthly for equipment. That said, you can save money on your home internet service by looking into providers that offer equipment included in their service. In addition, in many cases you can use your own equipment to avoid these costs altogether. CNET’s broadband expert, Joe Supan, saved hundreds of dollars on his home internet using his own equipment .
Evaluate your data usage
According to OpenVault's Q2 report , the average American household uses roughly 585.8GB of data per month, a nearly 10% increase from last year. Most internet providers cap data usage at around 1TB a month, which should be enough for most homes. However, satellite providers like Hughesnet have tighter data restrictions, which can be pretty limiting for its cheaper plans. Understanding your household's data usage is pivotal to finding the right provider. Many things can eat away at your data, like excessive streaming in 4K , online gaming and using certain applications. If you go over your monthly data cap, you might have to pay overage fees, which can boost your monthly bill. While providers like AT&T Fiber , Spectrum , Verizon Fios , CenturyLink , and Quantum Fiber offer unlimited data , it can be tricky to find ISPs offering truly unlimited data . If you look into the fine print, some providers will throttle (or slow down) your internet speed once you hit a certain data mark. Sparklight , for example, claims unlimited data on all plans, but there is a 5TB soft cap on all speed tiers. After you use your allotted 5TB, your speeds will be throttled. To avoid this, find out how you can manage your data usage .
How much speed do you need?
Do you know how much speed you're paying for? Do you know how much your household is actually getting? Take a quick internet speed test to find out. CNET's speed test of choice is Ookla for its consistency and ability to show your speed test history for further insights.
While most of the top ISPs in the country offer multigigabit plans (speeds that exceed 1,000Mbps), your household likely won't need it. OpenVault's first quarter 2024 report shows the average US household uses 520Mbps downstream and 28Mbps upstream. That same report also indicates that over a third of Americans use the internet at gigabit speeds. In other words, most households should be just fine with gigabit speeds.
Understand the difference between download vs. upload speeds
You might hear ISPs use these terms, but what do they mean? Upload speed tells you how fast you can send data to the internet (for instance with video calls or online gaming), whereas download speed tells you how fast you can pull data from the internet (say, streaming Netflix). Fiber connections typically offer symmetrical speeds, meaning your download and upload speeds are the same, resulting in faster connections.
The misconception about speed is that the more you have, the less likely you are to run into issues with slow internet. But truth be told, many factors can impact your speeds, even if you are on your provider's fastest plan. These factors include router placement, network congestion and outdated equipment.
What's the bottom line on your home internet?
We all need to get online to perform the basic functions of our lives, whether working remotely, paying our taxes or attending online schooling. The more you know about the internet you use, the better you can improve that broadband connection and ensure you're getting the most cost-efficient, useful plan for your household needs. While this page outlines the fundamental things you need to get started, it doesn't cover the full breadth of home broadband. Stay tuned for more as we dive deeper into other details, like understanding pricing and how internet monopolies work.
What you need to know about home internet FAQs
The internet is a complex network consisting of many smaller interconnected networks. The networks consist of computers, routers and servers that communicate with each other to process requests using an established set of protocols. There is no single centralized location for the internet: it is a vast global web.
Interestingly, the accuracy and quickness of an internet connection relies on the use of undersea fiber-optic cables that connect continents and data centers. The broadband networks that stretch across the US are owned by a group of various big internet service providers, like AT&T and Comcast . These ISPs then connect your home to an existing network, depending on the internet connection type .
What's the difference between the Internet, Wi-Fi and Ethernet?
The key difference between the internet, Wi-Fi and Ethernet is that Ethernet and Wi-Fi are ways to connect to the internet. The term "internet" refers to the vast interconnected computer network of data that connects millions of data servers.
Wi-Fi is a wireless internet connection (short for “wireless fidelity”) that allows you to get online without a cable. Ethernet, on the other hand, refers to a wired connection using an Ethernet cable. One basic distinction between the two is that the speeds you get from an Ethernet cable are almost always faster than a Wi-Fi connection.
How can I pick the right internet service provider?
Availability is key to finding the right ISP at your address. That said, you can use the Federal Communications Broadband Map , which displays your area's different ISPs and services. Look at the internet options available and factor in service details, like whether those providers impose monthly data restrictions or charge monthly equipment fees.
What's the difference between upload and download speeds?
Upload speeds tell you how fast you can send data to the internet, while download speeds tell you how fast you can pull data from the internet. Both are imperative to delivering the advertised speeds that come with your service. Fiber ISPs like Google Fiber, AT&T Fiber, Quantum Fiber and Ziply Fiber offer plans with symmetrical download and upload speeds, delivering a fast connection.
How much speed do I need?
It all depends on the number of users (and devices) in your household. If you live in a multistory home with four or more users on separate devices, you might want to pay more to get your hands on a gigabit plan. That said, OpenVault's Q1 2024 report highlights that the average US household uses about half of that, at 520Mbps downstream and 28Mbps upstream. So, if you share a home with one roommate and neither of you does much more than browse the web and stream the occasional show, 500Mbps should be more than enough.
