Stray Gods: Orpheus Review - Continuing The Original's Brilliance

Looped review: an overly simple love story lacking gameplay, neosprint review: marvelous modern improvements to the chaotic arcade classic.

The Cube films came out of Canada in the late ‘90s and the overlooked horror films create a truly unique universe, but the movies vary in terms of their quality.

Vincenzo Natali has helped bring to life such surreal horror projects as Splice  and In the Tall Grass , but his first major contribution to the horror genre is the mind-bending movie, Cube. The film sets seven strangers into a very unconventional prison that results in death at every turn as these prisoners pursue an escape. It’s a very creative blend of science fiction, horror, and emotional drama as the mysteries of the film eat away at the characters and the audience.

Related: Saw Is A Cube Ripoff (& It’s Worse)

Cube’s structure is remarkably simple and it’s why the film was able to make such a strong impression. The dark, mysterious premise has been returned to in similar puzzle-based horror films, like Saw or Escape Room . All of the Cube movies bring something original to the table, but they’re not all exactly worthwhile horror experiences. To help figure out which of these claustrophobic films are the most deserving of attention, here’s a useful look at how they all hold up.

3. Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)

Cube 2: Hypercube really goes nuts with the trippy mathematics of the prison and how theoretical geometry can be a killing force. A Tesseract -like cube of energy tears people apart and the constantly shifting physics of the room crush and absorb individuals. Cube 2 also plays around with alternate realities shown in the different rooms of the Cube. While the first film executes intense traps that are more akin to Saw , these are like the ways that Doctor Strange would dispose of someone. They're all very quantum realm and science-like. The big drawback here is the film's over-reliance on CGI effects and although the deaths are ambitious, they look very silly in retrospect and it cheapens the intelligence of the series. Cube 2 also has a death count in the dozens because there are so many alternate versions of the core group, which is a clever way around the limited size of the cast, even if it is a bit gratuitous.

2. Cube Zero (2004)

Cube Zero manages to course correct the series and it's the rare example of a sequel that is nearly as strong as the original. Instead of focusing on the victims that are stuck in the Cube, Cube Zero follows one of the technicians who are controlling the experiments within. Eventually, shaken by his own callousness, the technician ventures into the Cube himself to help a victim. Cube Zero features absolutely horrific gore and body horror (a guy literally melts to pieces after being exposed to gas), while also broaching crazier topics. It's smart in a way that Cube 2 isn't and it returns to practical effects for the most part. Coming out seven years after the first movie, it has the luxury of the best effects of the lot and many of these deaths actually look impressive for the time and still hold up. Until Cube Zero’s gonzo ending it actually cleverly adds to the original film’s ideas and connects back to the first movie in a way that feels earned (and also reminiscent of Saw ).

1. Cube (1997)

1997’s Cube is an amazing mix of a smart, simple premise (it's almost like a piece of theater) with absurd violence and torture. What makes Cube so engaging is that it truly creates a vast, mysterious killing field with its environment. Cube doesn't try to explain everything and if anything, it's ending is intentionally vague and open to interpretation, which gives the film even more strength. Many of the film’s kills are the result of the shifting physics of the Cube, but some are from cruel torture devices , all of which look incredible for a film from the '90s. What's so remarkable about Cube is that it's as much a gripping character study and meditation on humanity as it is a gruesome horror film. Cube is a weird, efficient film that refuses to be defined and it's a wonder that it even got made in the first place.

Cube [2023] – Movie Review (3/5)

Cube [2023] – Movie Review (3/5)

CUBE on Screambox is a Japanese remake of the iconic sci-fi horror movie by Vincenzo Natali. And yes, he is also on board this one as a producer. It’s a fairly close remake but with a few twists along the way. Read our full Cube  (2023) movie review here!

CUBE is a new strong Screambox addition. Many horror fans will already know the original 1997 movie which is a Canadian horror classic in its own right. Seeing a Japanese remake is a nice twist. Personally, I never mind remakes as they can bring something new to the table.

ANOTHER REMAKE WORTH CHECKING OUT The 2023 remake of  Last Shift  is titled  Malum  and by the original filmmaker >

Sometimes it’s as simple as an evolution in special effects and budget, while other times, it’s to put a new cultural spin on a good story. In the case of this remake, it’s mostly the latter as the actual setting is very much as in the original. And yes, the original filmmaker Vincenzo Natali is a producer on this remake, so he’s still involved.

Continue reading our Cube  (2023) movie review below. Find it on Screambox from April 11, 2023.

Japanese remake of Canadian cult classic

Just to manage your expectations; This Japanese remake of  Cube (full org. title: Cube: Ichido haittara, saigo ) does not bring much new to the table. Nor does it need to, but if you expect a crazy J-Horror version of the 1997 Canadian cult classic horror movie, you should consider yourself warned.

I was perhaps most surprised – or irritated really – that his Japanese remake had just one woman in the cast. She barely speaks a word and has very little screen time. In fact, it seems no one is really bothered with her as she moves around a bit in the background.

The original has two women – portrayed by Nicky Guadagni ( Ready or Not ) and Nicole de Boer ( Range Roads ) – and in this remake, there’s only the female actor Anne Watanabe. And yes, the last name does come from her actor father, Ken Watanabe ( Godzilla II: King of the Monsters ).

Cube (2023) – Review | Japanese Horror Remake

Not as crazy as expected

In a surprising twist – to me anyway – this Japanese remake is almost neater and less bloody than the original. I was surprised by this as Japanese horror movies can be very  brutal. A few of them have infamously resulted in people getting sick or fainting in theaters. Such as the 1999 horror movie Audition (org. title: Ôdishon ) by Takashi Miike.

Of course, had this Japanese remake been made by Takashi Miike , it probably would have included some crazy new scenes!

Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve watched the original Cube movie, then you know the “challenges” they come across have very physical consequences. And, of course, not everyone will make it in this movie.

Watch the Japanese  Cube  remake on Screambox

Yasuhiko Shimizu is the director of this Japanese remake of the iconic sci-fi horror movie by Vincenzo Natali. The writer of the adapted screenplay is Kôji Tokuo. Vincenzo Natali still gets credit for the original screenplay that this 2023 Screambox release is based on. That’s only fair as the two movies are very closely related.

As already mentioned, Vincenzo Natali is also on board in a more current role as an executive producer.

If you loved the original Cube movie, then you’ll definitely want to check out this one as well. Sure, it doesn’t offer much new, but again, it makes sense that a Japanese remake of a Canadian cult classic would stay true to the original. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just appreciate and honor it, which is exactly what this remake from Japan does.

Japan’s CUBE Remake will be out as a SCREAMBOX Original on April 11, 2023. Also, it will be available on VOD platforms via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting from this day.

Director: Yasuhiko Shimizu Script: Kôji Tokuo Cast: Masaki Suda, Anne Watanabe, Masaki Okada, Takumi Saitoh, Kôtarô Yoshida, Hikaru Tashiro

A group of strangers wake up in a mysterious room inscribed with an unfamiliar code. Looking for ways to escape, they discover the room is riddled with lethal traps. As fear and distrust swirl around them, the group must work together to survive the sadistic maze.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

cube 2023

I don’t have the same affinity for Vincenzo Natali’s Cube that some horror fans have (I’m more of a Splice man myself). A relic of the video rental era, Natali’s deviously gory dystopia had a tagline and box art to match. Cube and its many (admittedly convoluted) sequels follow a group of strangers plucked from their lives and plopped into the titular labyrinthine cube. The cubes within the cubes are filled with deadly traps, and participants must contend with dozens of rooms, hypercubes , and violent personalities if they hope to escape with their lives. Lionsgate, once poised to remake the original, has been MIA. Instead, director Yasuhiko Shimizu, with Natali attached as an executive producer, has crafted a Japanese remake of his own. Luckily, this Cube avoids most of the traps that plague many remakes.

Fundamentally, Cube as a remake does very little to distinguish itself from the original. In fact, its biggest divergences are simultaneously its biggest detractions. Cube is considerably less violent than its predecessor and inexplicably runs an additional 18 minutes longer. Cube , comfortable in the pathos of J-horror fare, endeavors to flesh out its cast of characters. Yet, the script gives no one aside from Masaki Suda’s quasi-protagonist Yuichi Gotomuch much of anything beyond an archetypal playbook.

Cube introduces Hikaru Tashiro’s Chiharu as the young savant equipped to assess the room’s prime numbers and develop a plan. Anne Watanabe’s Asako rarely speaks, satisfying the genre’s kind of regressive “she’s sympathetic because she’s a woman” role and little more. Among the core sextet, no one turns in a bad performance, exactly. Takumi Saitoh’s Ide is particularly good as the gruff, mysterious brawn of the group. Mostly, however, they amble about the rooms as tropes more than they do fully developed characters. Natali’s Cube wasn’t exactly a sterling example of characterization, though, in fairness, it didn’t dedicate an additional 18 minutes to developing it.

Yet, it’s in that adherence to the beats of the original that Cube excels. Shimizu and scribe Kôji Tokuo add some compelling wrinkles and cultural points of relevancy. They augment the more conventional routine of enter room, dodge trap, repeat. And, while most of the traps seen here are either inspired by or directly borrowed from the first, Shimizu exploits the familiarity to cultivate some effective tension, most notably in the group’s navigation of a sound-sensitive room. As an entry point for unfamiliar audiences, some fans might be disappointed to hear that the original’s use of prime numbers and Cartesian coordinates is acknowledged in the most perfunctory way possible, though the stripped-down approach works to thrill without overwhelming.

As Cube unfurls, the movie does belabor to make some points about inequality, discontent, and a general sense of misanthropy plaguing the present generation. It’s suitably existentially chilling. It won’t yield the same grisly efficacy as the original, though it tries to do its own thing. In a remake, that’s nothing if not laudable.

Cube isn’t going to win over any franchise diehards. There’s nothing new here. The few additions there jeopardize those elements that made the original so effective. Audiences with only a passing familiarity with the original, however, will find a lot to like. A kind of sanitized Cube , it works to acclimate a new generation to a horror classic. After decades of the West remaking and homogenizing dozens of Japanese horror movies, it’s only fair that Cube endeavors to do the same. And that it does so moderately well is no small feat. It’s not a trap, believe me.

Cube will exclusively premiere to stream on SCREAMBOX on April 11.

Fans unfamiliar with the original will find Cube a trap worth enduring.

We watched Cube from 1997 and it held my attention from start to finish with an interesting premise and very little in terms of budget.

Cube movie illustration by horror movie talk podcast

Cube has a simple premise, an assortment of individuals wake up and find themselves trapped in a maze of cubes. Each side and the ceiling and floor of each room they enter has a door on it.

Some cubes are booby trapped, and others are safe. Each individual brings a unique perspective and talent to the party, and they all must work together to escape the Cube.

In the end everyone gets more cube than they bargained for.

Cube movie poster

Cube is an interesting low budget, sci-fi horror from the 90’s. While that low-budget feel is present in Cube , director Vincenzo Natali does a great job of masking it with a variety of clever choices.

Saw , which came out in 2004, feels as if it were modeled after Cube, or maybe a loving tribute to the Cube. But it’s interesting to see what feels like the start of the puzzle gore genre.

The setting and premise of Cube are compelling and force the audience to imagine the setting that they aren’t allowed to see. Whenever a movie makes me imagine the larger scale universes or sets that they hint at, it works quite well for me.

The primary focus of this movie is on a handful of Cube dwellers and their attempt to escaped the Cube.

These are very highly exaggerated stereotypical 90’s protagonists that can fit into their own little boxes. These protagonist tropes range in the following ways:

  • Nerdy student who wears glasses and can do math
  • Disaffected office worker
  • Overly aggressive cop
  • Empathetic doctor
  • Escape artist

The puzzle aspects of Cube are often explained through confusing dialog with questionable logic, but I never found myself hung up on these problems. Instead I just had a little chuckle to myself about “simpler times” and let the movie unravel.

At the end I found myself engaged and interested in the story and the reason for the Cube and I will be watching Cube 2: Hypercube .

Loved your take on Cube! I had forgotten just how intense and claustrophobic that film is until I reread your review. The special effects hold up remarkably well even today.

The Big Picture

  • Cube 's understated brilliance paved the way for a sub-genre of horror films exploring human nature through escape room scenarios.
  • The film's mathematical entanglement and social experiment elements set it apart from its more popular and gory successors like Saw and Escape Room.
  • Ultimately, Cube 's power lies in its ambiguity, leaving audiences in a state of uncertainty and reflection long after the credits roll.

As far as revolutionary horror movies go, Cube (1997) is far more underrated than it deserves to be , especially considering the fact it incited the creation of a widely popular sub-genre of horror. Director Vincenzo Natali 's debut film contained the precursors of the escape room genre while mixing in elements of social experiment horror. The puzzle-solving and entrapment side inspired the notorious Saw (2004) and, later on, a series of 2000s escape room films like the more recent Escape Room (2019) . On the other hand, the claustrophobia and meditation on human nature appear in later social experiment movies like Circle (2015) and The Platform (2019) . With a small budget of $350,000 and a largely unheard of cast, Cube fit snugly in this found-footage-adjacent horror sub-genre that liberally used realism and voyeurism to explore the human condition.

Despite its influence, decades later, Cube has been lost to time. Perhaps its overbearing sequel and prequel , created by different filmmakers, overshadowed the quality of the first. These subsequent films mangle one of the strongest qualities of the original move – its ambiguity. Following a group of strangers stuck in a cube with doors on each of the six sides that lead to more cubes inside a cuboid outer shell, Cube is as geometric and mathematical as it gets. While escaping, the group tries to find purpose and answers in this trap-laden cuboid labyrinth, but in the end, we and the sole escapee are engulfed by the blinding light of ignorance and uncertainty. While Cube leaves us wondering if the perpetrator is the government, mega-corporations, a random group of wealthy people or aliens, Hypercube (2002) and Cube Zero (2004) fill in the blanks for us, stripping the power out of the original film.

Cube (1997)

A group of strangers awaken to find themselves placed in a giant cube. Each one of them is gifted with a special skill and they must work together to escape an endless maze of deadly traps.

'Cube' Pioneered the Escape Room Horror Sub-Genre

At first glance, Cube is a fairly understated watch – there is no indication that it would spurn a sub-genre that includes critically acclaimed films and franchises that have earned billions of dollars. While the puzzles are nowhere as near grandiose as those in Escape Room or gory as those in the Saw franchise , it has its own unique charm. At first, it seemed like the only feasible way through the luminous cubes was to test for traps by throwing in boots. Eventually, the resident mathematics student, Leaven ( Nicole de Boer ), discovers three numbers on each of the entrances and constantly deciphers, then re-evaluates the cipher throughout the film. First, a prime number means a trapped room; second, they indicate the cube's co-ordinates on a three-dimensional plane; and third, they represent the movement of the mechanical cubes.

As the characters venture further into this mathematical entanglement, Leaven eventually figures out that the first room they began in was near the bridge (the exit). The damning realization of discovering that if they had gone against their human instincts to act and solve , and just stayed in the first room, they would’ve escaped sooner , is only comparable to the fate of Adam ( Leigh Whannell ) in the first Saw . His initial panicked movement driven by gut instinct is one of the reasons the key to his shackles slid down the drain of the bathtub, causing a unique kind of psychological torture. While in Adam's case – it was could have either been planned, Amanda's ( Shawnee Smith ) fault , or plain bad luck, in Cube , the theory of Occam's razor comes into play: sometimes the simplest solution is the right one. Logistically, the people that placed the strangers into the rooms would have placed them by the entrance and just hoped that the prisoners would drag themselves deeper into the cube, which they did. The simplicity and logic of it echoes Worth's ( David Hewlett ) nihilistic attitude and, ironically enough, perhaps if the others had followed suit, there wouldn't even be a movie to film.

The Escape Room Genre Meets Social Experiment Horror in 'Cube'

Along with the puzzles, Cube engages with the idea of a social experiment between its character archetypes and the emphasis on human nature . This is markedly different from Saw and Escape Room as they are more akin to experimental redemption ( if we are to believe Tobin Bell 's John Kramer ) and a murder entertainment show, respectively. Instead, the claustrophobia of shooting in a single room and the array of human fight-flight-or-freeze reactions that are displayed is more congruous with the social experiment horror staples, Circle and The Platform . Each involves distinct personalities that try to navigate the unfamiliar and harrowing situation before them, leading to deception, violence, selfishness and, in some, altruism.

Quentin's ( Maurice Dean Wint ) transformation from a public-serving police officer to a deceptive and violent paragon is the character arc that is most relevant to the film's exploration of the human condition. Wint masters Quentin's gradual descent into what Carl Jung would call his id (essentially primal instincts), from the more sinister undertones in his voice to the wild darting of his eyes. In fact, Quentin actually racks up more on-screen kills than the cube traps, with a body count of three to two, suggesting that it is actual humans that are the greatest threat to themselves. The Platform loudly echoes this sentiment in a more anti-capitalist take, as the volunteers prioritize self over the collective when they reach the higher levels with more food.

Worth also has a note-worthy transformation, from a sullen nihilist to an active member of the team. By the end, he actually begins to encourage Leaven and Kazan ( Andrew Miller ), demonstrating far more hidden empathy and compassion than we initially believed he was capable of. Worth and Quentin ended up switching roles in the group from a burden to a leader and vice versa – once again emphasizing the malleability of human nature under pressure.

'Cube' Tackles the Human Condition With Realism and Voyeurism

Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, & Maurice Dean Wint looking down at an object in Cube

Sitting somewhere in between the neighboring worlds of escape room and social experiment horror, Cube's ability to both entertain us with the possibility of an escape, yet also drown us in dreary philosophical views of the world turns us into the heartless voyeurs many of these films critique. We incessantly consume the realistic display of uncomfortable emotions portrayed by the cast, perhaps making us the elusive antagonist of the film. It feels like a device used by found-footage films, where the constructed realism makes us unwillingly a part of the plot and the commentary.

That being said, there is a sense of being a voyeur but also a prisoner of the cube, simultaneously. While we are distanced, the repetitive scenes and constant mathematical jargon being thrown at us, makes us as confused as the prisoners but also as reliant on Leaven as they are . We simply trust that Leaven's extensive vocabulary of prime numbers, factorials, and permutations is navigating us onto the right path. On the other hand, if you are as experienced as the mathematics consultant Natali hired, you're just as isolated as Leaven is, constantly being frustrated at the questioning and lack of help from others.

the-platform-slice

If You Like 'The Platform', Watch These Movies Next

From 'Snowpiercer' to 'The Raid', here are the best movies to watch if you're hooked on Netflix's new thriller.

Realism didn't only permeate the viewing experience and the mathematical accuracy, but also trickled down into the character's names. Each character was named after a renowned and real-life prison , which may be a little on the nose in terms of imprisonment themes, but it is a testament to Natali's commitment to details. Holloway ( Nicky Guadagni ) is named after a woman's prison in the U.K. – HM Prison Holloway, Quentin is after San Quentin in California, Rennes ( Wayne Robson ) is after a prison in France – Centre pénitentiaire de Rennes, Kazan is after one in Russia, and Leaven and Worth are from Leavenworth in the U.S.

'Cube's Ending Sets It Apart From Its Descendants

But what really sets Cube apart from its descendants is its ambiguity . There is no definite corporate entity that we can point our finger at, like Midas in Escape Room , or the dystopian government in Circle, or even just killers like Jigsaw et al. However, the characters repeatedly theorize who could be behind the cube, with guesses ranging from the classics (corporations and governments), filthy rich folks searching for alternative entertainment, aliens (had to be thrown in there) and my personal favorite, some organization who built it, scrapped it, then decided to use it on a whim. Rather than confirming or denying any of these theories, the film uses them as a function of characterization, providing us with insight into the prisoner's values and mindsets. This further proves the films' insistence on capturing the human experience, where most of the time we are clueless and never truly attain the answers we seek.

Essentially, all the power Cube holds is in its ambiguity– it's how the film manages to create such a quietly gripping 90 minutes, and it's how the sequel and prequel failed. Both Hypercube and Cube Zero increasingly indulged in revealing the mega-corporation that built and used the cube for experimental testing. With a premise that revolved around the organization's identity and mission, the essence of the original film was entirely lost . It is important to note that Natali only directed the original film and had never intended to create sequels. In an interview with Slash Films , he explains why: "First of all, I'm not a huge fan of most sequels. And then I just didn't think it was a story that sequelized well."

Even though Natali set out to film a "homemade... under-the-radar" film ( via a Dread Central interview ), he inadvertently ended up creating an influential piece with a ripple effect that can still be seen today . Melding two beloved horror sub-genres together, Cube strikes the perfect balance between sci-fi and realism, and voyeur and prisoner. But what really ties this largely underrated and riveting watch all together is its exploratory capacity of human nature and ambiguity, despite being a single-set film. As such, we are left with unease as the blinding light of true ignorance engulfs the screen – no matter how many answers the characters got right in the cube, they never really get the “bigger picture,” as Worth says.

The Ending Of Cube Explained

Leaven anxious in Cube

Good science fiction thrillers are a rare breed, especially when you consider the budget requirements needed to meet audience expectations of visual razzle dazzle. In 1997,  Cube opened in a modest 16 theaters, and pulled in a measly $500,000 in sales on a film budget of $350,000 . This dismal theater run was a humble beginning for what would become a cult hit. Thanks to word of mouth and intellectual curiosity, Cube continued on to see a wider release across the globe, and its returns soared into the millions . This sustained rise in popularity resulted in subsequent films Hypercube and Cube Zero,  a sequel and a prequel, respectively.

Cube follows several strangers who awaken in a mysterious series of rooms, all linked together to form a massive cube construct of unknown origin. An unsettling number of rooms contain elaborate death traps, such as flamethrowers, room-spanning death spikes, and face-melting acid. The people in the Cube don't seem to be connected in any way, and are oblivious to their place in the grand scheme. An ambiguous ending leaves viewers to ponder the film's meaning — and also work on their mathematics knowledge. If you are still questioning the intricacies of Cube all these years later, you've nestled into the appropriate corner of cyberspace. This is the ending of 1997's Cube , explained.

Waking up in the most elaborate escape room ever constructed

Before an ominous title sequence rolls, Cube offers a taste of what gruesome delight is in store. A man gingerly meanders from one room to another, when he is suddenly filleted into neat little meat cubes by a deadly trap. This glimpse of the device's awful capabilities adds palpable tension as we watch five people converge in a glowing white room within the Cube. Each person is baffled as to their circumstances, and has no memory of how they got there.

Standard escape-room operating procedure would call for probing any bookshelves and picture frames for hidden keys. But there is nothing distinct in any of the rooms, beyond differently colored lighting. All six sides of each room are equal in size, and feature a door leading to another room in every direction. The captives attempt to analyze each other's backgrounds in search of clues that could help them shatter the grand illusion, but each possibility only leads to more questions. They are forced to take the only route available: They push forward and move from room to room in search of an exit. Logically, this feels like the right move. Eventually, they should reach the edge — the rooms can't go on forever, after all. Right?

There are deadly traps in some of the rooms

As we see in our introduction to Cube , there is a possibility that moving into a new room might transform you into human sushi. Rennes, a resourceful member of the party, develops a rudimentary method to test for traps by throwing boots into adjoining rooms. It proves reliable, until Rennes steps into a supposedly trap-free room, and the Cube lobs a faceful of corrosive acid at him. This unexpected death demands a new approach, because obviously, there is more to the Cube than meets the eye.

We initially assume that the color coding of each room will factor into the Cube's machinations, but you should actually cast that assumption aside. The different colors of each room are only used as a cinematic tool — they're a clever way for the low-budget film to portray multiple rooms with the same set. The key to escaping the diabolical plot device is actually all about math. Each door bears a set of numbers etched into the metal. These numbers offer up a way to avoid any deadly traps. The resident mathematics major, Leaven, concludes that trapped rooms contain prime numbers on their door label. Testing the method proves fruitful. The group now has a sound method for moving inside the Cube. They only have to be careful not to collapse from within.

Fear and paranoia take the stage

Human beings have difficulty embracing chaos. The idea that circumstances could occur for no reason is thus unacceptable in the eyes of  Cube's  characters. When Rennes delivers his inspiring little speech about how "you gotta save yourselves from yourselves" and is promptly reduced to a meat crater, his death signifies the death of his ideology as well. A new dictum reigns: Only look at what's in front of you, and keep moving.

This incident also sparks an overwhelming desire to assign blame. Particularly susceptible to madness is Quentin, who proves to be a loose cannon, and starts to develop wild theories about their surroundings, such as their demise being "some rich psycho's entertainment". When Worth reveals that he contributed to the Cube's construction, you would assume he either has knowledge they need, or is a spy planted in the group to ensure their demise. In response to this uncertainty, Quentin becomes enraged and assaults Worth, then forces him to become the group's test dummy for entering new rooms. This development in the group's dynamics is a glaring statement about the movie's true intentions. Every person in the group wakes up in the same situation: trapped in the Cube. Yet, rather than aiming their frustrations at their surroundings, they begin viewing each other with suspicion and fear.

The metaphorical within the theoretical

While major elements of  Cube  have you struggling to remember geometry class , one of the film's underlying messages might slide right past you. The captives' prison is nowhere near as dangerous as they themselves are — as the saying goes, wherever you go, there you are. No one inside the Cube is in control. Yet they all possess a small piece of what could be the key to their release. Rather than work together for a better outcome, however, they end up turning on each other — and therein lies the point of the movie.

Not only is everyone in the Cube slowly succumbing to dehydration and starvation, but they're also angered by the annoying fact that there is no one to blame. "There is no conspiracy. No one is in charge. It's a headless blunder operating under the illusion of a master plan," explains Worth, attempting to spread his ideals of futility. This logic can be hard to accept while struggling to deduce reason from mayhem, but this is, in fact, the primary message of the whole film. Cube is one giant metaphor, packaged as a sci-fi horror film. The true mastermind behind this death machine is non-existent, unless you count humanity as a whole, and an inability to accept that dooms the characters.

The left hand never knows what the right is doing

The revelation that Worth played a part in the construction of the outer shell is information you would expect to reveal an escape route. But all it does initially is make Quentin angrier and supply a small bit of knowledge of how large the Cube is: 26 by 26 by 26, for a grand total of 17,576 rooms. Unfortunately, Worth only has knowledge about the outer shell and not much else. He can only expand on the film's point: No one has a clue as to what is going on. The resulting paranoia from this information is expressed by Holloway: "You keep everyone separated so the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing."

Holloway believes knowledge of the whole structure is kept hidden from each individual who has helped make it. This is only halfway true. Indeed, no single person working on the Cube has knowledge of everything involved, and that lack of information may seem like intentional withholding, which implies a grand scheme. But in actuality, these cogs make up a machine that's trudging along with no pilot — an equally terrifying headless horseman .

The Cube is pointless -- and that's the point

The overarching ideology of Cube gets a bit twisted when one considers the point of the central structure. The existence of the Cube seems extremely unnecessary: What possible use could people have for a monstrous prison filled with thousands of potentially deadly rooms? There has to be a reason it exists, because constructing a mechanism as vast as this would take the coordination of extremely wealthy individuals or governments. Right? Well, not necessarily.

The point of Cube  is that there is no point. Worth's dialogue helps drive this home, when he explains that the only reason people are put into the Cube is because not doing so would mean admitting that the Cube is pointless. "But it IS pointless!" exclaims Quentin, when he is presented with this logic. "That's the point," Worth replies dryly. Therein lies the quirky appeal of this sci-fi horror flick : The Cube is an enormous and unthinkably complex machine, churning along for no other reason than to merit its own existence.

The characters begin to destroy each other

Rather than aiming their resolve at the situation and working together to get out, everyone in Cube begins turning on each other — especially Quentin. The infuriating prison does nothing but stoke his anger. He succumbs to the delusion that he can see into people's minds, but in reality, he seamlessly projects his fears onto everyone around him. Holloway recognizes this, and rather than using it to her advantage, she uses it to verbally attack him and expose his true nature. In response, Quentin intentionally lets her fall off the edge of the Cube, and justifies the act with the logic that she knew too much about him, so she must be in on the whole thing.

For the most part, all the main characters in Cube are harmed by each other, and not their three-dimensional prison. The only thing that stops everyone from beating each other to death are the numbers in each room. They are the group's only real answer to what they all ultimately want: A way out. Thankfully, there is a mathematician on board, as well as a human calculator.

Using math to understand the Cube

Every teen who's ever wondered why they need to know math in the real world should be shown  Cube . Not only do you need math in order to count money, it also comes in handy when you wake up in a gigantic death maze. Initially, we think that the door numbers only reveal traps, but Leaven is able to use their knowledge of how big the cube is in combination with the door numbers to plot their position. This allows them to find the shortest route to the edge of the Cube, so they can make better sense of their surroundings.

The trip spins them around until they arrive back at the room that Rennes died in at the beginning of the film. Everyone believes they've just spent all their time going in circles, but Worth points out that the room Rennes had gotten an acid peel in is gone now, and they were at the edge. The room has vanished. This means the rooms have been shifting around them while they have moved through the Cube. This awareness changes how Leaven analyzes the numbers, enabling her to even more accurately decipher how they can escape.

Plotting their position inside the Cube

Every new piece of information reveals a more complex language within the Cube's number sequences. Now that Leaven knows the rooms have been moving, she realizes she must use Cartesian coordinates. We aren't going to pretend to be math whizzes, so we'll just say that with this knowledge, she is able to plot their position within the Cube. The group is able to figure out where they are, where they need to go, and how much time they have.

A pleasant surprise comes in the form of Kazan's incredible number-crunching brain: He is able to factor out extremely large numbers and accurately uncover which rooms are booby trapped. Everything becomes clearer about their surroundings once they know how to accurately analyze the number system of the Cube. Leaven and the others are now able to efficiently move through the Cube towards what they believe to be the exit.  All the pieces slide into place, and everything converges in Cube 's final moments .

Back to where it all began

Earlier in  Cube , Leaven is briefly baffled by a room having a coordinate of 27. This is puzzling information, considering they know the Cube is 26 rooms across: A coordinate of 27 would place that room outside of the Cube. It turns out that this particular room serves as a bridge towards the outer shell, where they can escape. For a short time, this room will allow them to exit, but afterwards, it plugs itself back into the rest of the Cube and begins rotating through the entire mechanism again. The characters are disheartened to thus realize that if they hadn't moved at all, the room they started in would have eventually returned to the exit.

Now that Quentin has the information he needs, he gradually becomes more domineering and controlling. It's obvious that Quentin views his fellow prisoners as tools he can use to escape. Recognizing where things are heading, the rest of the group traps him in an adjacent room and races towards the exit. Leaven leads the group towards the appropriate room at the edge of the Cube. Now, all they have to do is wait until the bridge room slides into place, and then they'll be homeward bound.

The final room

At last, the group reaches the final room, which is bathed in glorious sunlight. Worth hesitates for a moment, reluctant to return to a life he is unhappy living. During this brief moment of contemplation, Quentin slithers into the room with them and impales Leaven through the chest. He then stabs Worth, and turns toward Kazan. Kazan jumps out into the daylight, and Quentin begins to step through after him. Worth musters up his last bit of strength and grabs hold of Quentin as the rooms begin to shift. Quentin struggles, caught between the moving rooms, but to no avail. He ends up becoming a smear of red across the Cube's shell.

In the end, Kazan is the only person to escape. He will not be able to describe everything that happened inside the Cube, which means that the entire machine will keep churning along. No one will be given the knowledge of how they plotted their location with numbers, or how they figured out which rooms had traps. It is likely that the dimensions of the Cube die along with Worth as well. As far as a linear plot goes, nothing that happens in the Cube changes a single thing, which is kind of the point. But when you say it like that, we can definitely understand the desire for a sequel.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

listen, i am a self described cube superfan. i could talk about cube for hours, i've seen the original over a dozen times and i know it by heart. it is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. naturally this means i am annoying when it comes to the film. i wanted to like this movie, i really did! cube content in 2021? you're joking! it's a fucking miracle. i think this really had promise and it could have been really fun... it just didn't hit the mark.

i unfortunately have a lot of problems with this remake. it feels like anything i loved about the original was stripped away and warped into something unrecognizable. i guess before i tear this…

At least there was some character growth. This could probably go in between the first and third Cube . The dude killed by the metal roots should’ve had a worse death.

The cube movies explained: analysis | meaning of the cube movies franchise.

Adrian Halen 10/12/2012 News

The Cube Movies Explanation

The Cube series is highly regarded as a fantastical and complex franchise that bases its films around the intricacies of a mystery cube. The initial cube is a 6-sided room that offers small doors on all sides (leading to other cubes) with lethal booby traps awaiting in some of them. A pattern to “which” rooms had traps was never established, though we know that they were activated with either motion or sound. The films are set up with captives that awake into this new environment challenged with trying to figure a way out.

This article was designed with a focus on the Cube film series and to bring some clarity to the cube enigma. For research this entailed the viewing of all 3 films and whatever filmmaker information I could dig up in regards to uncovering the cube’s purpose. While there are clues that were incorporated “into” the scripts, it should be noted that keeping aspects of the Cube ambiguous was intended and deliberate. This of course becomes a frustration to viewers who seek resolution. This article is not intended to resolve “all”, but to bring clarity on the points made in the films.

My purpose for this article could be extracted from the previous reviews on all 3 films, however I felt it might be better to lay the facts out in a single article that “connects” the 3 movies.

Note: The following provides SPOILERS that should only be referred to “after” viewing the films. The facts are provided to bring clarity to the enigma of the series.

For starters “ Cube (1997)”, was the first, “ Cube 2:hypercube ” was the 2nd entry with “ Cube Zero ” being the 3rd that actually acts as a prequel leading up to “Cube”. One could start with “Cube Zero”, but that would take all the fun out of it. The preferred viewing is as suggested.

To establish a foundation, it should be noted that each of the 3 films were directed by different directors. Vincenzo Natali was responsible for “Cube (1997)”, but passed when offered to direct the sequels stating that he wasn’t a fan of sequels. This is important as Natali’s initial concept was left as is in the film “Cube (1997)”. The follow-ups were “new” inclusions that were developed from the initial idea (All 3 films are quite different but still share the focal aspect of the Cube).

cube movie review reddit

In dialog he suggested “You keep everyone separated so the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing”, which referred to the series of contractors who were hired to construct various parts of the whole.

In fact the creators of this cube were never mentioned. It was “assumed” to be a private builder or a government project. This was left unresolved, though clarified with the inductions of the films “Cube 2” and “Cube Zero”

These points “may” have been the intention of first director / writer Vincenzo Natali, if the film was left “as is”. The location, the purpose, and those in charge were left to an ambiguous plotline that was intended to stay unresolved. The 2 sequels that followed were designed to tell more the cube’s story developing it into an elaborate franchise. So in “initial” summary, what we saw was what we got.

So what was the first cube in “Cube (1997)”? The cube was a three-dimensional puzzle much like a Rubik’s cube. It was made up of 14 foot square rooms enclosed inside an outer shell. Its total dimensions were cited as 434 feet square. An equation was made that if a cube was 26 rooms high by 26 rooms across by 26 rooms deep (leaving 35 feet between the rooms and outer shell to move within), it would total at 17,576 rooms. The rooms were lit with either red, amber, green, blue, or white.

Cube (1997) took on a mathematical tone with its solution resting on prime numbers to help point the way out. We learned in the first film that it required at least 1 mathematical mind held captive to solve the puzzle for the rest.

Cube (1997) was created on a low budget that used one complete cube and one partial (for camera angles). The room was lit differently as they entered a new cube to give the film the illusion of multiples.

The characters of Cube (1997) all held names that were taken from well known prisons. This was assumed to be a metaphor in the script for the idea of being trapped (or imprisoned).

Moving forward with the franchise………….

cube movie review reddit

It is fair to say that the intention, direction, and purpose would evolve and change by the time we reached the 3rd film. “Cube Zero” as a 3rd entry was created to be a prequel to “Cube 1997” telling the story from an inside perspective. “Cube 2: Hypercube” wasn’t followed by a sequel that picks up where it left off. The ending would prove to be frustrating and incomplete, but I’ve helped o fill in some of the gaps in this article.

If you’ve viewed all 3 films, you will have much more clarity than any single one on its own. Each is a different film with its basis being centered on the same construct. Since time has passed between the film productions, the sets and the technology used have been upgraded to bring in more complex scenarios. For instance in “Cube (1997)” we are confined to a extremely large construct that combines what “seems” like miles of rooms with an interchangeable one that is constantly in motion. The structure of “Cube (1997)” is an all mechanical architecture located in an unknown source. The powers behind it are quite ambiguous and never really revealed. We do gain clues thru discussion about the construction of this massive structure, but like all great companies, its a sum of parts that never connect as a whole (as mentioned prior).

The cube project is has been tested many times for research. In “Cube 2: Hypercube”, we learn that Kate Filmore is one of the only operatives to have survived (with the previous obviously being terminated within the cube’s time-based puzzle).

I do comment a bit on this more in the “ Cube 2: Hypercube” review.

So let’s break things down to where we are at: (This is important as some of the proposed perspectives tend to change by the time you get to “Cube Zero”)

Cube 1 is an elaborate mechanical construct, cube 2 is a quantum experiment that has a tesseract slowing closing in on itself. How the captives were placed inside this device isn’t mentioned (at this time), but we do learn that each captive was drugged and kidnapped from various parts of the world.

They were all chosen as having abilities that “could” collectively figure a solution on how to get out. (aka the fair chance) They were also hinted at all having various roles in the planning, construction, or creation of the cube. But with each, none seems to have fully known how all the parts would fit together. Some of the captives are more versed in the theory realities of it while others were related in simple architectural engineering tasks.

cube movie review reddit

We now learn that:

The cube project was originated by a weapons company called Izon. At some point, it is suggested that it becomes a government owned operation. (which is typical anyways of these weapon testing projects) The keyword to remember is “weapons”, since in “Cube Zero” we learn that the cube environment is used for this, but the cube itself is only a puzzle-prison of sorts.

In “Cube (1997)”, the construct featured “death rooms”, that triggered booby traps. The traps varied and were designed to weed out those worthy of figuring them out.

In “Cube 2: Hypercube”, the death traps were abandoned in place of the complexities of a quantum-based tesseract. So the dangers would revolve around the physics changing and the occasional execution motion-based configuration shape that could shred its victims.

Oh ya…..then there is the threat of dealing with the complexities of time warping. This aspect was demonstrated when captives would later return aged or in an alternate reality starved and deteriorated from old age. The clues for this threat pointed to the idea that the group should never stop moving (or possibly face time acceleration). As when the 2 lovers “engage in intercourse” over a short period, they also wind up aged corpses suggesting that time moved by very quickly for them (or slower for the others depending on the perspective).

How is this possible? a room with a slow time rate would of course offset the instantaneous difference from those that were faster

Was the series purposely ambiguous? Of course, in fact the original ending of Cube 2, left the ending unanswered which was better resolved (but not entirely) in the included alternate ending (this is explained in the “”Cube 2: Hypercube” review). The contemplation of 2 endings proves that the filmmakers “did” have a clear idea of what and where it was all going, but decided to keep things unresolved to create more tension.

cube movie review reddit

In the alternate ending we hear the words “Phase 2 complete” which gives us an idea of what stage we are at. Though with no follow up film from this point to forward, the “next phase” question goes unanswered.

We also learn from the alternative ending that Izon has been sending in operatives for various testing reasons (which most have not survived). Due to the nature of the cube, and the expression on Kate’s face before being shot, they (Kate) are assuming termination regardless of success.

“Cube 2: Hypercube” is a time based puzzle that closes in on itself (implodes) based on a quantum (parallel) reality. Alex Trusk is the hacker genius who first designed it for Izon thinking it was only to be used for a game and not in reality. The cube’s purpose in this case was to test teleportation. The puzzle ends on the exact time of 6:06:59 of which Kate jumps into. To further play with your mind, we are told that the whole experience lasted only 6 minutes and 59 seconds, which was obviously warped in quantum physics terms.

cube movie review reddit

It’s probably best to layout what new information we learn in a listing of new conclusions:

– the organization gets all its captives with the inclusion of a consent form (which we assume is doctored under drug injection) It is also worth noting that we assume some of the prisoners to be “prisoners on death row” who have consented to try their luck in the cube.

– the organization has no intention of letting any of its captives free without execution despite giving them hope and a mathematical challenge. (this is demonstrated when one does make it to the final cube and is executed (we have to assume that if they answered yes, they probably would die per another fate, hence stating disbelief in God triggers a flamethrower execution. My guess is that if they chose “Yes” that it would end in a light-driven execution)

We could also jump back to the original Cube film, where 1 survivor makes it out (assuming). Though if you remember correctly it was a brightly lit doorway (which is repeated in “Cube Zero”). We find in “Cube Zero”, that this is in fact just another room, hence the final execution room

– a file is kept on every captive, who is also recorded per hidden cameras – the organization kidnaps those who pose a political threat – the organization kidnaps those who get too close or are consented in some way (an ex-employee, ex-contractor…so on) – The employees are also cautioned and left in the dark on many things. (left hand separated from the right hand concept) – Those who pry too much are placed in the cube (thus deemed dispensable) – the location is assumed to be Earth rooted on an island or remote location – the location of the “cube” is underground – the cube has been tested, recorded, and analyzed for some time, but is also under future reconstruction – The soldiers who work for the organization are implanted with a mind control devices, that can be deactivated (per the soldier prisoner who was placed in the cube without “green eyes”)

– those who know “too” much are lobotomized and placed back into the cube (we can make the connection that “Kazan” from “Cube (1997)” was also an ex-employee who was lobotomized and placed in the cube)

cube movie review reddit

– We don’t know who is leading the organization, but assume the highest in political and military status (thus a former General was placed inside) – higher rank employees are re engineered with electronic devices implanted in them (per an eye or hand device inclusion)

– As per the dialog “I’ve even heard there are other facilities” – suggests other constructs, but not confirmed (this might explain the difference in appearances)

cube movie review reddit

Well, hopefully this personal study paints a clearer picture between the films and the clues left for us like a bread trail that needed to be followed. Others who read this may find a few “connect the dots” themselves which I encourage you to share. One thing was clear to me. The minds behind all 3 had their work cut out for them keeping a solidarity from one film into the next. Then again, they were also inventing points as they wrote next inclusions taking the original into new realms.

I don’t know if this was mentioned and I didn’t notice it but when Wynn was about to undergo that surgery, the man says “me and him have agreed on some new terms”

They made him “disabled” but he kept his genius. He was the person who escaped in 1997

Wynn still escaped.

i still think there is something more important in the 3rd movie i think the end means more than just what the sugery result was

' src=

in my opinion, the ending of the first movie is an exit to an better cube an more challenging one for Kazan, after that they went cyber

' src=

I got the impression that the “Yes” answer administered to the escaped prisoners might actually set them free after all, or at least prolong their execution for some other test. Given Dodd’s propensity to say Praise before eating meals, and the generally oppressive and tyrannical nature of the environment where he and the main character (“Brainman”) work, I would guess that the government is some sort of “Big Brother” theocracy, where sinners and doubters are required to prove their enduring faith in God — do they still believe in him, after their memories are erased and they’ve seen the most horrible things that seem to disprove the existence of God? There are a lot of different ways you could go with this theme, if you decide to attribute more significance to the God question.

Another idea I had was that the workers, “Brainmann” Wynn and Dodd, were suffering in a Cube of their own, just like the prisoners they monitored. I noticed that Wynn and Dodd don’t have very clear memories, and suspiciously don’t remember the last time they were outside. Their work lives appear to be repetitive and cold, much like the cube rooms, and their coworkers seem to be disappearing at a surprisingly quick rate, much like the prisoners within the cube. And at the end of Cube Zero, the one-eyed man reveals that the workers are lab rates, just like the mechanical Cube’s prisoners.

This may not be the right way to interpret these clues, but perhaps the inner cube is a kind of mental and physical test, culminating in a test of faith, while the outer cube is some sort of moral test: only those who are receptive to the prisoners’ suffering and courageous enough to follow their moral intuitions have any change of escaping, or at least getting to the “Exit Room.” The others are demoted to the inner cube. What would the analogous question be in the Exit Room? Well, if one eyed Zakk and his studly techies are truly running the show as part of some evil totalitarian Church of Latter Day Saints or whatever, I really can’t imagine what they would ask. But, if you think about it, Dodd and Wynn didn’t really know or why the prisoners from the inner cube were tested using the God question. They simply administered the test, ignorantly, at the behest of the higher level. Perhaps, then, to keep things analogous, the evil-Mormon doesn’t really know how or why the dumb-worker level is being tested; they simply administer the test, by being evil-scary “Big Brother” creeps, and accept orders unconditionally from an even higher and mysterious source. Perhaps, then, the phone call that one-eyed Zakk receives from the work-room has some sort of symbolic significance, in showing the hierarchical nature of the movie’s reality. In that case, what would Zakk’s test be? And who’s above Zakk? There still appears to be a normally functioning world outside the Cube reality, so what’s that like? I really don’t know.

Very curious to here other thoughts on this theme, and any other interpretations of the plot. I feel like there are so many ways you can go with it.

i believe.. its been done by a religious group.. :), it owns a company izon.. which is of course connected to govt too.. :), whatever it is.. it clearly states that.. this world if filled with retards.. who are rich and powerful.. and religion is one making another class of retards that are actually poor :)

' src=

The name of the company, Izon, is even an anagram for the word Zion, which is the mountain in Canaan that plays a large part in Mormon/LDS culture. I think that you’re right on the money about the religious subtext theory.

' src=

They should have stayed in the white room, each of them where put in there at a different time, someone must have put them in there, did you not notice the names of the :prisoners: quentin aka san quentin, holloway its a women’s prison here in the uk, Kazan russia. The ren, renne France, Anderson need I go on. Each character is named after a prison!

If you can escape the cube, you are allowed the join the inner echelon of those who rule the world

' src=

You think so? I think they are pretty much the equivalent of lab mice in a maze. Even if by some chance they do get out, they won’t be rewarded with anything special; certainly not an invitation to join the upper ranks of some top-secret elitist cabal.

In fact, just the act of making it through that puzzle only ensures that they will have to be silenced in some fashion.

' src=

I think the Cube is a sort of metaphor for life; you’re thrown into a strange, new place without any memory of a world before. You are locked in the Cube with complete strangers, symbolizing the fact that you have to choose who you want to trust in life. The never ending, unpredictable traps symbolize how treacherous life can be. I think this is sort of evidenced by Worth’s comment on how the Cube has no creator and no purpose, despite looking so perfect and fine-tune. It’s a metaphor for religion, and how some people think that there is a way out of the Cube and to freedom, while others do not; but no matter if you believe or not, you can not know for sure what comes after the “exit”.

I guess Cube Zero made this a bit more obvious, with the “Do you believe in God?” question. The creators of the Cube are, in a way, God; nobody knows why they made the cube, or how. Of course, in the Cube series “God” isn’t exactly a nice guy, with the whole “burning people alive” thing. I also think it’s interesting that Jax refers to his superior(s) only as “the big guys” or just “above”.

But hey, that’s just my theory. If you want to be a little less abstract, I think it was built by either a government or some sort of religious organization that has gained almost government-like power. Still, the true purpose of the Cube will probably remain unknown.

Yeah you’re right…I think there’s more lessons we can figure out in this movie that we can apply in our lives.

' src=

so is Worth right about there not being a creator, or is it just metaphorical atheism? and why did the female doctor seem to have outside info about Quinton’s personal life?

' src=

Holloway proposed that Quentin abused his children based on his violent personality, it just happened to be a correct assumption on her part.

' src=

Holy crap, thank you so much for posting this! It is gonna be so helpful when I am thinking about going to AMC Orange Park 24 in Jacksonville! Rad!

' src=

the other facilities would explain why even cube have different traps and ways of escape,in other words there is more than one cube and each movie is based around a different one

It’s possible they all take place on different cubes or simply different versions of the same cube, at least Cube(1) and Cube Zero’s Cube seem to indicate this.

' src=

Wow, thank you so much for posting this! It is gonna be so helpful when I am thinking about going to AMC Regency 24 in Jacksonville! Awe Inspiring!

' src=

ok, here is my take on the movies: cube: facility for testing weapons on prisoners. Regardless on why they are there: as described in cube zero political reason or death sentenced , it does not matter. why the special construct of the team? they selected the best team to test their traps. The ending shows Kazam escaping probably to a final test. Cube zero reveals who Kazam is btw (spoilers)

cube: hypercube -although entertaining hypercube does not relate well with neither of the other cube films and is set in a distopian future where time-space anomalies can be generated at will. Also it does not reveal much about the cube itself.

cube zero: reveals most of the inner ideas behind the cube (weapon testing facility using prisoners) which in the original cube were only hinted. Also reveals who is Kazam. About the yes answer I believe that if the prisoner would have answered yes then he would be reinstated as a worker (the one eyed dude was probably a survivor of the cube), Is a great way to ensure loyalty in a totalitarian system. The whole part with the workers who are in itself prisoners is in some way a mirror of today’s life. Most people today work to survive (it does not matter how much you gain)having no clue on what’s going on in reality (the big picture); also the room where the two coworkers are is similar to a cubicle. Before the capitalist reign money were a measure of the work you made. Now due to a lot of economic laws including banking (which is theft in reality) money are held as value into themselves so you can make money with no work. If tehnology would disapear we would see the reality that money are just meaningless pieces of paper the same as the pelet of a hamster. But we are trapped in an economical prison were so called “democratic states” are no more than slave driven states. We become so dependant on these meaningless pieces of paper that we are like slaves. Also you will remark that most people today cannot survive outside this system because they have no skills: they do not know how to grow food, how to build a house, how to make a fire, etc.

Kazan could or could not be Wynn. In Cube Zero, Jax had mentioned that Wynn’s “sentence” was extended for “two more lifetimes”. Those lifetimes could have been as himself first, then as Kazan. His memory could have been erased twice. If not erased, the severe autism would have rendered the inability to properly communicate even if he were to warn members of the group about what they had to face.

' src=

Nah. I Think in all 3 movies that just It’s leaded by a goverment division. As it hinted in Cube 2 or Cube 3 It said C,I,A Which is the position of a cube. But the cube could be made by the CIA OR Funded by the CIA. It’s either run by the goverment Or military. Most likely The goverment is using alien technology. That..

Is my theory

Huh no. CIA was a random location within the cube, it could have been AAA or DEF.

' src=

Am I way off in suggesting that the whole film I’d an analysis of the human psyche and that each character represents a different part. Kind of like the film Identity. If we break it down to the simplest part we are left with the truest purest form. I found it suggesting that autism wasn’t a disease, but in fact the next step in human evolution.

Oops… is an analysis…

' src=

If autism is the “next step in human evolution”, then we’re all in deep trouble.

' src=

Actually I believe that if they answered yes then two possible outcomes can occur:

1. they can have part of the memory erased and placed as supervisors of the cube (themselves being supervised) 2. they can be killed or placed again in the cube if deemed too dangerous

Note that Kazan asked to be placed back into the cube because he felt guilty.

Kazan never asked to be put back into the cube. There were never references to who he really was except that he seemed autistic.

' src=

kazan, is the guy, that has his (memory erazed)

or some other nasty thing, who are meddling with his mind, in a relaatively free of sedations procedures

that’s why he appeas autistic , in the first installment, although he has attained a few abilities from his past, he was an excellent chess player, and had his way with numbers, so he is ‘helping them’ navigate through the maze, with his amazing skills (multiplying 3 digit numbers)

' src=

You wrote that the 3rd movie leads up to the 1st one which I believe is not true.

Given that different people created the movies I think it was just a bad try to “round” the trilogy up.

The first “retard” was more than likely not an ex-worker but autistic, hence his special ability with numbers.

Also, at the end it’s not Worth, Quentin etc. but a new bunch.

There are some similarities to how Kazan and Wynn act, but they are not the same person. However it can be seen that Kazan was an ex-employee who may have broken the “rules” similar to Wynn. The punishment was lobotomy causing autistic behavior while leaving their intellectual abilities in tact.

' src=

OK….. Is there another movie like this… But better….

Questions about Cube Zero:

Did anyone notice the human body silhouettes near the end of movie when Wynn was about to be lobotomized? Does anyone have a clue what the human body silhouettes are and used for?

-Based on the human silhouettes, is it possible that they are clones? Their memory could have been inherited/modified or induced. We don’t know for certain how the outside world is like, but if people disappear wouldn’t it cause others to look for them? If the “lab rats” were clones, no one would know they exist nor would anyone be worried if they were missing. In general the people who made them would own them and can do as they please, with a never ending supply of bodies, the human silhouettes, they could do any type of test or results as they please.

At the end of the movie, one-eyed Jax didn’t say much about Rains escape even though Wynn believed that she got away. Is it possible that she also has the tracking chip in her brain as well? In her REM video feed, you could see a chip being put in the brain although it could have been induced plus the fact that she saw her daughter captured as well. During the video speculation, the screen does have a tracking ID for her.

' src=

There has to be a better conclusion than “they are being experimented on.” Well duh, but really who would go through all this time, effort and money to construct something so intricate and evolved as this without there being a major reason? “Just experimenting” is too obvious. These movies could be so much better if the audience was given more to work with. Also, if a more qualified director/screenwriter would be willing to take on this project (i.e. Christopher Nolan) we could actually have a quality series. I do like the overall feel of what has been done so far, but it could be polished with the right crew.

' src=

Cube illustrates the pointlessness of life It takes you through specific points through time and space that can be plotted but never with an actual point that can be determined. It shows us that we are all rats running on a wheel. “Nothing matters. What if it did?” Also for interest there are many many Egyptian themes. Entombed. Buried. God. Light. Engineers being trapped in their own devises. Cartouche “chips” and symbolism a. Labyrinth

It also compels one to question a modern notion of a benevolent God If we are created in his image and we play with other oeoplees lives like chess game. Then is that what a judeochristian God does?

Cube reminds me a lot of persons unknown’s “The program” except with no clear purpose.

' src=

So, three films into the franchise and the only conclusion that can be made is “they’re being experimented on”? I came to that conclusion ten minutes into the first film. Glad I didn’t bother watching the other two. I didn’t find the movie particularly thrilling or well made, and since there appears to be no discernible meaning or reason behind the plot, I can’t understand why these films are so popular.

It’s cult science fiction. The 3 films delve into things like quantum physics and time distortion which is appealing to science fiction fans. The trilogy simply offers an experience different than others and makes for some compelling discussions. If your not willing to check them all out then you are not gaining a full perspective

Is this thread still active?

If it is, i have to say I have watched all three series of Cube for number of times in my 28 years of life..

Much of old threads on IMDB are lost, most of fan art is lost, but I came to this thread because it seems still alive… So a few thoughts I would share with you all, in case someone is still reading and thinking about this great concept of the Cube..

I never liked third part, Cube Zero, so i will stick to the Cube 1 and Cube 2 Hypercube, as mentioned about, Cube Zero tried to “wrap up” the whole story, but diffrent writers, producers… just a NO NO..

There is a rumor going on that Natali (director of the first movie) deleted some parts that indicated the “alien” theory.. What do you guys think about that? People inside the first Cube finding some food, indicating that its not human? Also, where do you think Kazan ends up when the light shows? And please don’t say that this is explained in Cube Zero because I dont think thats what happened in the first part.. not by far.

There is a picture of Cube in alternate versions of movie posters which keep me boggling… WHERE cube exactly is, how… ? :)

https://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/18/A70-9427

If someone is still here, give me a ring so we can discuss this a bit..

I like the theory about Cube being a metaphore for life or also a “game for sick sadistic richmans” as Quentin hinted..

Hypercube was for me good, because it has solid begining and ending, not OPEN as Cube 1..

' src=

I actually liked Cube Zero, it didn’t just explain too much away, but ended up creating more questions that I felt further deepened the mystery. But I can see where it might ruin the original by taking away its open-endedness.

Anyway, I never had a solid theory on where Kazan ends up in the light, though one idea that intrigues me is that he is able to walk off without a problem because what Worth said is true: nobody is in charge, the cube is an abandoned project/facility that continues to operate on its own, and these people are here because of some system that keeps running by itself.

Another theory I like is that the cube exists in something like a pocket dimension. When Kazan walks into the light, he is returning to the real world, though the state of that world could be anything. For some reason, the original Cube film gave me the impression that whatever the outside world is like, there aren’t a lot of people left in it. Not sure why. I also think each film can be Canon or not with each other depending on the viewer’s interpretation, since they are all made by different people and don’t necessitate connecting.

As for the alien theory, I find that less likely but not impossible. The presence of human numbers and letters being the main reason, but it would also make sense since aliens would be more interested in experiments beyond our comprehension, the tech to build the cube is obviously advanced, and the light at the exit/darkness at the edge suggests an unnatural location.

' src=

I’m with Julian Smmoller way up there ^.

I think it’s all religious undertones in a Big Brother society – the cube is real, and those that go in the cube do actually die. But – why would anyone ever be released, even if they entered the Exit Room and answered the questions correctly?

You wouldn’t – if this person got out, there’s two scenarios that occur in my mind: They are memory wiped and put straight back in (or some other experiment), or they’re simply killed. Imagine if one of these people escaped and lived to tell the tale? There would, at least, be national scrutiny and satellite imagery would no doubt find the location of the Cubes, unravelling Izon entirely.

I think it’s real, but no one ever truly gets out.

' src=

the first movie freaked me out and the second i thought was silly. i enjoyed the cube zero expansion of the lore though.

it’s really pretty forward. cube zero is pretty much a stretched remake of the book 1984. people are put in a testing chamber for military weapons aka the cube. the observers (and the audience) at first are lead to believe that only bad people are put in and with their consent- but we soon learn any foe of the system is tossed in, and probably getting killed even if they do get out. Cube Zero is very close to the book 1984 in structure where you have Winston who, like in Cube Zero, is a part of the government and participating in the lie – basically question things and end up fighting the system he was a part of only to find himself in a doomed situation. and both over a women if memory serves.

' src=

Personally,I always thought it was some “alien” entity in charge. Remember the alien writing on the computer screens? i think it was in the 1st movie.

' src=

My take on the whole thing after viewing Cube Zero is that there are NO PHYSICAL CUBES. The entire experience is created via a virtual reality brain implant that the captors control. I think the proof of this comes in Zero when we see the woman ‘rescued’ by the main character living in the woods with her (previously missing) daughter. The girl had been taken (assuming she existed at all) so there would have been no happy reuniion simply by the woman escaping the Cube and its hidden omplex. The main character is shown this in his mind (I believe) as a reward for doing the right thing. These are all prisoners in a correctional facility, but they aren’t imprisoned by bars and guards, they’re imprisoned by brain implants that don’t allow them to distinguish reality from the virtual reality being fed directly into their brains. In each case in the movies where a good deed is performed, there is a corresponding reward AND punishment. The reward is for doing the good deed (like saving someone else or retrieving vital information) and the punishment is for further testing of the subject’s degree of change. I.e. will the change hold, or will the prisoners revert back to their bad ways if things don’t go their way? IMHO nobody actually dies in the films, but some people (like the daughter) may not actually exist. The fact that timing plays such a role in the ‘final’ movie Hypercube, suggests that the creators (of the virtual reality program) are trying to speed the ‘cure’ (perhaps getting a lifetime of psychotherapy in five minutes.) It’s also possible that the political aspects of the film are ‘real’ and that the object is to get people to conform to society overnight. That’s why those who are apparently ‘outside’ the cube get tossed ‘inside’ when they don’t follow the rules and procedures outlined for them. Conformity could also be the theme of all the movies, as we’ve learned that one of the initial rooms is also the exit room, meaning no course of action is the best course of action. Trying to ‘escape’ one’s fate just places you in more jeopardy. I think this also suggests that no one is ever really killed, as the theme suggests that every person is important in some way, has some contribution to make to society, and just needs to learn to work well with others. All in all it’s about a totalitarian society trying to bring its misfits into line.

they are redoing a lot of older movies (i.e IT) maby someone with pick up this movie one day and it will be remastered into something great :D

' src=

I haven’t read all of the responses, but could the lady in Cube Zero be the wife of Wynn? Maybe that is why she is as protesting and why he felt such a connection to her.

' src=

Cube Zero can work with cube 1 based on some of the theories above but they really need another movie to clear up cube 2. Cube 2 has Sasha aka Alex Trusk possessing something that Izon wanted and so she his in the one place that they would not look for her…. but they did. The weird part is that there is no special way to escape in cube 2, the exit just appears as the time is about to expire, which i think is a bit of a copout. The part that truly didn’t make sense though was that they execute the operative.

From a film making point of view, i think they needed to show that Alex Trusk was wanted for her knowledge (it doesn’t change the plot but reinforces it). As mentioned above they also need to have Alex and the agent escape via some means other than surviving till the exit appeared (all the movie did to reconcile their escape was explain the physics of why everyone else died of old age, which may have correlated with moving to escape the waves or been in the vicinity of Alex Trusks necklace).

Cube 1 suggests that there is no rhyme or reason, that’s is some forgotten project, Cube 2 plots that they are trying to develop futuristic technology and it is a testing ground not just for people but time and dimensions, Cube 3 has some religious backgrounds but mainly gears it’s plot to setting up Cube 1.

Good movies but they suffer from huge continuity errors as they are somewhat unrelated due to different directors and i believe that Cube 1 was never meant to have a sequel. Usually a sequel would follow up the last movie by continuing the characters story but since they want to make the cube the focus of the series they should have made some form of central character or organisation (the might have been fragmented to the point the “the left hand didn’t know what the right was doing”) that was running the cubes which would give a running purpose to base a series of movies on. Cube 1 and 2 simply aren’t related properly, they have different goals which conflict with each other.

' src=

For me the whole trilogy keeps in tact a Kafkaesque metaphor for human existence in general, applying various societal themes throughout. They actually did a great job of covering pretty much all bases, which created a lot of ambiguity and loose-ends, but honestly that’s exactly what great art is supposed to do.

The idea of arriving somewhere dangerous with no ‘manual’ and wondering why you’re there is literally exactly what we experience living on Earth, which is why stories like this are so gripping. I hate torture-porn type stuff, but I *love* cube, because it’s not about the gore (which is hilarious and creatively done throughout all three movies imho) it’s about the psychological torture of existing, and being convinced of a better place or a better situation that is worth working towards. Some characters choose to become nihilist in the face of such horror, and others turn to their primal survival instincts to keep them going, others commit suicide, while still others simply ‘run out of time’ looking for the answers and simply die.

Basically Cube is just a metaphor for existence put through a very harsh lens, but if you watch the movies with this in mind, you’ll realize how great they are, and why they seem to get under your skin so much.

Update to film makers

We cube fans – could surely benefit from either/and a new cube film or at least a trilogy Bluray set

C’mon Shout Factory, or other – let’s get this task(product) into the hands of viewers who would love to get them collectively packaged AND on BR!

or simply, tell me why these movies have so many passionate fans, but yet the product is ignored!

We finally saw the [REC] movies hit BR set……..so let’s get CUBE films added to that list!!!

I agree with the comments that, abstractly, the movies are about life.. You show up confused, some make decisions that weed them out early, others make relationships and work together.. But, even if you ‘win’ nobody gets out alive.

However, from a ‘purpose in that world’ perspective, the cubes seem to be set up as elaborate social science experiments. They seem to take a lot of inspiration from both the Stanford Experiment, where some students were guards and some prisoner, and each assumed their role over time to the point of the guards abusing the prisoners (they took on the mindset of their roles) nd the Milgram Obediance Experiments where they saw how far people were willing to abuse others if an authority figure told them to. These would be things a totalitarian government would want to know… How far can you make people go before they give up. How much affect does a panopticon have on people and their willingness to abuse others they can actively see to appease faceless masters theyve never met. A totalitarian govt runs on fear and getting citizens to police / monitor / punish each other. It also wants to see how cohesive people can be and why they would be cohesive vs turning on each other. A govt like that wants to know how the citizens can come together to be stronger, so it can counteract them and keep them under its thumb.

But, the experiment may have ended long ago, and the facility is still just going on, oblivious. If you pay a contractor enough cash, they’ll do somethibg forever without question.. Projects get lost in govt red tape all the time. It was probably kicked off for a reason, but the govt moved on, and now just uses it as a black ops place to dump people they dont want to hear from again. Izon is still running it all since theyre still getting paid, but theres no purpose anymore. And the govt has forgotten about it but its still on the books.

Like life, maybe it seems to have some kind of grand design, but in the end its all pointless but has been given a twisted meaning by the people running it now. Eg maybe the govt told Izon to make the cubes and do the experiments because THAT was the experiment.. The govt wantes to see if a company would gonthrough with it or queation the morality. And, seeing them gonthrough with it, the govt just sat back and watched what izon did… Power corrupts, and izon has corrupted to the point of chipping soldiers, and tossing kidnapped dissidants into cube to hush them up if they oppose izon. Corporations tend to have psych profiles of psychotics (greedy, self interssted, etc) so the cubes could have no purpose but to see how far a dyatopian company is willing to go with unlimited fundibg and no oversight.

If you chose yes you become a first level watcher and in time you can become a second level watcher like the dude without an eye and arm. Of course if you do not follow orders back in the cube you go.

' src=

Has anyone thought that ‘The Belko Experiment’ could fit somewhere in this universe?

' src=

i think that in the second movie they are trying to get Sasha/Alex Trusk out of the cube. Sasha did say she ran in there by herself trying to escape. If you watch closely at the begining besides Kate, Sasha is the only one not in a bag wich might mean shes still in there. At the end of the movie the guards say that they are gonna check the device for recording (probably to see where Sasha ended up so they can retrieve her from the maze she created).

Cube movie explained

Cube Movie Explained: What is the meaning?

When talking about revolutionary horror stories with a unique concept and a disappointing string of sequels, one just cannot avoid talking about the science-fiction thriller Cube . It’s  a story about a group of people who wake up one day in an unknown, hostile setting , trying to use all the information and resources at their disposal to find the exit. While  some people compare it to  Saw , the similarities themselves are pretty superficial and have more of an aesthetic nature.  Saw  is primarily a story of revenge and redemption. In  Cube,  the emphasis is put on the social experiment in play. Without further ado, let’s see what Cube is about and why it can rightfully be seen as a masterclass in storytelling. Here’s the plot and ending of the movie Cube explained; spoilers ahead.

Cube Movie: Plot Explained In Short

A group of survivors wakes up in  a maze consisting of   14×14 feet large, cube-shaped rooms . Each room is marked by a number, and some of the rooms are equipped with deadly traps. The prisoners don’t know how or why they reached that cubical room or that it is a maze.

The group tries to look for answers , developing their theories as to why they’re there and where they are. Except for Worth, who participated in constructing the outer shell of the Cube but knew nothing past his part of the job, everyone else seems to be selected semi-randomly.

One clear thing is that they’re selected based on their  archetypes, personalities, and talents , which strongly indicates that some sort of   twisted experiment , like in the movie  Circle , is actually at play.

Being  put to the test in a real-life environment  ensures they learn quickly and on their feet. That and use every last shred of their potential in this pursuit. It’s a similar concept to how, in a traditional learning environment, a student can never progress as fast as with a cleverly-put  community outreach program . Learning and seeing an example is just more efficient.

It doesn’t take long until  the group starts turning on each other,  and in the end, a mentally challenged member of the group is the only survivor who manages to leave the place.

Cube Movie: Ending Explained

Cube ending explained

The ending of the movie Cube shows us that had the group done nothing and waited long enough, they would have all been free and unharmed. The first Cube moved between the maze’s exit and interior sections.

But humans aren’t built that way. We must  solve  when faced with a problem. If you think about it, human intelligence can sometimes be viewed as the curse that, as a collective species, drives us towards our own extinction.

Cube Movie: Characters

Now, regardless of what you think about the story itself,  the storytelling is spot on . It’s like someone read an incredibly elaborate book of all the dos and don’ts of narration, character development, and story progression and did their best not to miss a simple thing.

Character Names in Cube

First of all, the characters’  names start with different letters . We have Quentin (Q), Leaven (L), Holloway (H), Rennes (R), Worth (W), and Kazan (K). This way, it’s easy to avoid confusing the audience with so many similar names (we’re looking at you, GRR Martin).

Not only that, the  characters are named after famous prisons , thus signifying that their imprisonment in the Cube might have been predetermined. If anything, this ties in quite nicely with Quentin’s theory of it all being organized for someone’s sick entertainment. Quentin is named after San Quentin. Leaven and Worth, put together, represent Leavenworth. Holloway is named after a known women’s prison in the U.K., while Rennes and Kazan are the locations of notorious penitentiaries in France and Russia, respectively.

Characterization and Development

Cube Characters

Their theories of the Cube’s purpose  play a key role in character reveal. Holloway, for instance, is quick to believe that it’s a government conspiracy, while Quentin immediately suspects psychopathic fantasies of a magnate are at play. Worth’s nihilistic outlook on life is revealed through his theory that it’s all just chaotic and ungoverned (perhaps even ungovernable).

It also shows  how different characters transform under pressure . For instance, while Quentin seems the most courageous at the start, he succumbs to panic and paranoia rather quickly. In the end, a person who initially seemed like a natural leader turns out to be a burden. Ironically, Kazan, who initially did look like a burden, turned out to be their best shot at getting out.

This is the author’s take on the  fight, flight or freeze response to critical situations . Worth, for instance, is a nihilist. However, when put on the spot, he turns into both a protector and a survivalist (even though it takes him a bit to develop in this direction).

Each character represents an archetype,  and the number of available characters is just enough for the story to work. There’s also minimum carnage and gore, and it’s all for storytelling purposes.

The death of Alderson at the very start is there, as a perfect example of  show-do-not-tell , to inform us that the place is dangerous, indeed. Rennes is killed so early on for two reasons. First, to avoid the group using him as a crutch, how he’s the most qualified to deal with the situation at hand. Had Rennes not been killed, Leaven might have stayed quiet for the rest of the movie. Second, it shows us that survivability or skill alone is not a free ticket for getting out of the Cube.

Cube Movie: Narration

Cube opening

The narration is so brilliant that  the viewer feels trapped inside the Cube too . You have no idea which room is rigged (same as them). An average viewer doesn’t understand the X, Y, and Z coordination or the derived equations, no more than Quentin, Holloway, and Worth do, which makes us dependent on Leaven to break it down and puts us in the same spot as the other characters. We find out if the room is a trap at the same time as they.

Internal Logical Consistency

The location of the “bridge” (exit) is also quite logical when one’s using  Occam’s Razor (a principle that claims that the most obvious solution is often the most logical). Why did they start near the entrance? When you observe from the logistical standpoint, someone (an employee behind the management of the maze/cube) had to carry them inside. If the rooms in the cube move on their own, then there’s no point in why the protagonists would have to be carried particularly deep into the cube. Someone could have just left them near the entrance and then relied on them (and the cube motion itself) to distribute them deeper and deeper (which is exactly what happened).

We Learn As They Do

Most importantly, the characters are imperfect, and their knowledge, like the viewer’s knowledge of the nature of the Cube, expands as the movie progresses. Initially, they make mistakes, as they make conclusions based on false assumptions and incomplete information .

The real antagonist in the movie Cube

The Cube movie’s message is also quite powerful, and it is delivered quite subtly to the viewer. When you start doing the math, you’ll stumble upon the realization that  Quentin killed more people than the Cube . The Cube killed 2 (Rennes and Alderson), while Quentin killed 3 (Leaven, Holloway, and Worth) before getting killed by Worth himself. In other words, no matter how hostile the conditions, the biggest threat to social groups often comes from the members themselves. The conditions, no matter how hostile, are something that one can adjust to.

Cube Movie: In Conclusion

Ultimately,  this movie doesn’t answer all the questions  the audience has.  Who built the Cube? Why was it made? However, this was never the point. First of all, in life, you never get all the answers you seek, and neither do the prisoners. Second, the experiment itself, a deeper look into human nature, and the atmosphere in the movie is that of fear and being in the dark about what’s going on. It’s as if the viewer themselves is trapped in the cube with the protagonists.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Review: Lavish Tollywood Sci-Fi Epic Is an Unabashedly Derivative Spectacle

Telugu cinema superstar Prabhas swashbuckles as a Han Solo clone.

Kalki 2898 AD

With “ Kalki 2898 AD ,” Telugu cinema filmmaker Nag Ashwin rifles through a century of sci-fi and fantasy extravaganzas to create a wildly uneven mashup of everything from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” to Marvel Comics movies, underpinned by elements from the Hindu epic poem “Mahabharata.” It’s billed, perhaps optimistically, as the first chapter of the Kalki Cinematic Universe franchise — which makes it part of a larger trend, since it launches the same weekend that Kevin Costner’s multi-film “Horizon” saga does in the U.S.

With a data licensing framework in play, rights holders can embrace ai , ‘confessions of a good samaritan’ review: penny lane delivers a documentary essay on altruism and its discontents, popular on variety.

Bhairava (Telugu superstar Prabhas ), a roguish bounty hunter who rolls in a tricked-out faux Batmobile equipped with a robotic co-pilot, yearns to earn enough “credits” to buy his way into the Complex, where he can crash the best parties, ride horses through open fields and avoid all the debt collectors hounding him in Kasi. He seizes on the opportunity to make his dreams come true when a colossal reward is posted for the capture of SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), an escapee from the Complex’s Project K lab, where pregnant women are routinely incinerated after being drained of fluids that can ensure Yaskin’s longevity.

While on the run through a desert wasteland, en route to the rebel enclave known as Shambala, SUM-80 is renamed Sumati by newfound allies and, more important, protected by the now-ancient Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), who has evolved into an 8-foot-tall sage with superhuman strength, kinda-sorta like Obi-Wan Kenobi on steroids, and a sharp eye for any woman who might qualify as the Mother, the long-prophesized parent of — yes, you guessed it — Kalki.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.

Minions (Pierre Coffin) in Despicable Me 4, directed by Chris Renaud.

In Despicable Me 4 , the latest installment of Illumination Studio’s popular franchise, Gru (a winning Steve Carell) confronts the subtle villainy of suburban life. There’s something about the charmed aesthetics of Mayflower that doesn’t sit right. Maybe it’s the near-identical cottage-style homes, all painted the same shade of eggshell white and retrofitted with pristine pools; or perhaps it’s the residents, a wealthy and entitled bunch bent on excluding the unfamiliar. Whatever the reason, the vibes are certainly off.

Despicable Me 4 begins with an exciting confrontation (courtesy of slick angles and tense music by composer Heitor Pereira) between Gru and a new villain, Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell). The pair’s history goes back to when they were students at Lycee Pas Bon, the premier institution for aspiring bad guys. They meet again at their school reunion, which, no matter the length of your rap sheet, is still fraught with aged tensions, awkward exchanges and not-so-subtle competitive small talk.

At the soirée, Maxime, a cockroach obsessive, unveils his new invention, a device that endows him with qualities of the near-indestructible vermin. Gru, newly reinstated to the Anti-Villain League after the shenanigans of Despicable Me 3 , only attended the reunion to arrest Maxime, which he does after the latter’s dramatic presentation.

The new identities are a tough sell and some of the most winning moments in Despicable Me 4 detail the family’s attempts to fit into Mayflower. Gru swaps out his signature dark garb and scarf for khakis and pink polo shirts. He’s now a part-time solar power salesman and stay-at-home dad. Lucy becomes a world-class beautician, working in the stuffy salon on Main Street. Margo attends a new junior high school, where popular girl Poppy (an excellent Joey King) reigns supreme. Meanwhile, Agnes and Edith attend a karate program run by a menacing instructor (Brad Ableson). That endeavor makes for some inventive sequences, including a surprisingly high-stakes supermarket chase involving Lucy and the girls.

The cast delivers engaging voice performances, with Carell and King leading the pack. As Gru, Carell retains the villain’s signature irritability while also touching on the vulnerable enthusiasm of raising his new infant. Trying to bond with Gru Jr., who rejects his paternal affection, becomes top priority for this dad. The other mission is to befriend the country-club family next door, who seemingly want nothing to do with their neighbors. Perry (Stephen Colbert) treats Gru with cutting disdain, and through their interactions the subtle cruelty of this suburb is evident. Patsy (Chloe Fineman) is friendlier, and even invites Gru and Lucy to the country club for drinks and tennis.

While the Grus adjust to a quiet life, Maxime hunts for them. He and his wife get into their own frenzied adventures, but this part of the narrative feels underdeveloped at times. Maxime plans to abduct Gru Jr. as payback, which is a far cry from the early threats of extermination, but still evil. Running a brisk 95 minutes, Despicable Me 4 doesn’t leave enough time for Maxime to enact his plans in a way that packs an emotional punch.

The fate of the Minions offers some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments and impressively detailed animation. Silas enlists the gaggle of yellow beings to train as the AVL’s top agents. A select group of them undergo an experimental treatment that turns them into super Minions. Their training sequences — both at AVL headquarters and in the city — stick to the tradition of Illumination animators having fun with the Loony Tunes-style bits. They also end up, somewhat ironically, grounding Despicable Me 4 , which can get dizzying with its twists and turns. When in doubt of direction, just trust the Minions.

Ice Cube ‘s popular three-on-three basketball league, BIG3, is setting down roots. Since its founding in 2017, the 12-team league featuring former NBA and international players has barnstormed around the country setting up shop in cities and playing a series of games, with last year’s contests rolling into Chicago, Dallas, Brooklyn, Memphis, Miami, Boston, Charlotte and Detroit.

The BIG3’s 2024 season marches on this weekend, with six games scheduled for Sunday (July 7) in Newark, N.J. at the Prudential Center, followed by weekend contests in Anaheim (July 14), Portland (July 20), Cincinnati (July 28), San Antonio (August 4), Nashville (August 11) and Boston (August 18). In March, Cube offered college superstar Caitlin Clark $5 million to join the BIG3, though she opted to sign a four-year contract with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever that was reportedly worth $338,000.

Cube (1997 Horror)

I thought about this movie today. Will recommend everyone to see it - even if horror is normally not your thing.

Cube is a movie that explores human nature and our instinctive urges for survival vs our humanitarianism. Not a new concept, I know, however this movie does it in style, with a plot so simple that it could only be the work of a conceptual genius. I don't intend to give too much away, as the power of the film lies in it's mystery, but I will say that this movie could almost be classified as disturbing, not due to its content, but rather the thoughts that it instills in the audience. I found myself rather shaken as I left the cinema, feeling as though I had been exposed to an ugly, hidden side of humanity and society. Don't get me wrong, this movie is definitely worth seeing, I would even be so bold as to say that it must be seen! I must admit that there are few movies I have seen that have had such a profound affect on me, and I don't think I am alone in my feelings.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July holiday, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the Second Continental Congress’ unanimous adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, a document announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain.

One year later, according to the Library of Congress , a spontaneous celebration in Philadelphia marked the anniversary of American independence.

But observations weren’t commonplace until after the War of 1812, when they quickly took off. Congress was late to the party, finally passing a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

Here’s what is open and closed this year on the Fourth of July:

Government Buildings

Government offices, post offices, courts and schools are closed.

Banks and the stock market

U.S. stock markets and banks are closed Thursday.

Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Independence Day.

Warehouse membership club Costco said it would be closed on July 4th , but the vast majority of major national retailers will be open, with some offering promotional sales to lure customers. Hours may vary by location, so check your local store.

Image

With the Fourth of July holiday falling on a Thursday, many Americans plan to take Friday off too, enabling them to travel for a long weekend.

Auto club AAA projects that 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday week from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. The projected number of travelers for that period is 5% more than last year and 8% more than in 2019.

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car during the holiday week, 2.8 million more travelers than last year. AAA is forecasting that a record 5.74 million people will fly to their July Fourth destinations, an increase of nearly 7% over last year and a 12% jump over 2019.

Review: ‘Despicable Me 4’ swirls with overplotted mania and should prove distracting enough

A girl with braces schemes with her minions.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

“Despicable Me 4” should come with a subtitle: “The Kitchen Sink.” That’s because this latest installment of Illumination’s mega-grossing animated franchise jams in a grab-bag of physical and visual gags and anything-goes action, plus a barrage of narrative dead ends, subplots and characters, as it strains to fill its 90 or so minutes of eye-popping, brain-draining mayhem.

Despite a few chuckles, some capable voice work and plenty of splashy color, it proves a largely empty and exhausting ride.

It’s doubtful that the average viewer — initiated or new to the series — will be able to recount a fully coherent summary of the film’s whirling-dervish plot, penned by Ken Daurio (a writer on all the “Despicable” entries) and Mike White (“The White Lotus”). The convoluted story won’t stop families from lining up for this one, but be forewarned.

Said plot involves “Despicable” series star Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), that lovably hapless, curiously accented supervillain-turned-hero (he of the ovoid head and woodpecker-like nose), who’s forced into a sort of witness protection program after running afoul of his old childhood nemesis, the uber-evil Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell). Le Mal, a eurotrashy Frenchman with an equally wicked and flamboyant girlfriend (an underused Sofia Vergara), has vowed revenge against Gru and his family, so steps must be taken. Although the origin story for their longtime feud is sure to go over the heads of any small fries in attendance, it’s hardly the stuff of do-or-die wars. But whatever.

Gru’s Anti-Villain League (AVL) boss, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), whose own head resembles a malleable eggplant, sets up Gru and his family — plucky wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), also an AVL agent; trio of adopted young daughters and feisty baby son — in the idyllic town of Mayflower under assumed identities. Gru becomes a solar panel salesman named Chet Cunningham. Lucy now must go by “Blanche” and, despite zero tonsorial talent, work as a hairstylist (a labored story segue with little payoff).

Animated tennis players make karate moves as they prepare for combat.

There are neighbors: super-snooty, swoop-jawed car dealer Perry (Stephen Colbert), his socialite wife, Patsy (Chloe Fineman), and their teen daughter, Poppy (Joey King). The latter, an evildoer-in-training, quickly susses out Gru’s true identity and blackmails him into a dicey heist at Gru and Le Mal’s alma mater, the imposing Lycée Pas Bon, a high school for villains. The result is another haywire set piece and the theft of an erratic honey badger.

What else? Well, Le Mal can turn himself into a giant, ultra-destructive cockroach because why not? Gru’s two youngest daughters join a karate class led by an inexplicably hostile sensei (Brad Abelson). Oh, and Gru ends up over his head in a tennis game with Perry and his country club friends but eventually shows them all who’s boss — to no great avail.

There’s a kidnapping (not the first in this series); a school principal in a wheelchair that transforms into a kind of monster truck; and a death-defying (read: consequence-free) climactic battle that feels Looney Tunes-ridiculous even for a movie like this.

Much more is stuffed into the proceedings, including the franchise’s famed Minions, those yellow, gibberish-babbling, capsule-shaped little pranksters (all voiced by their co-creator, Pierre Coffin), who largely exist to assist Gru. Yet they’re used here more as a chaotic diversion than any vital plot propeller.

How the power of the Minions and Gen Z propelled the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise

Against all odds, the beloved Minions of the “Despicable Me” franchise evolved from a childhood staple to a favorite of online moms to a Gen Z icon.

July 3, 2024

While Coogan’s Ramsbottom injects five of the creatures with a special serum that affords them a nutty array of superhero-like powers, the rest of the Minions are stuck at Gru’s house where they’re continually at odds with a vending machine. Whatever their purpose in “4,” they remain yappy, annoying and rambunctious — even if the mighty, so-called Mega Minions can now (ineptly) decimate a city.

Directed by Illumination veteran Chris Renaud (the first two “Despicable Me” films, “The Lorax” and both “Secret Life of Pets” movies are all his), one can’t fault the movie’s speedy pace. The picture may be wearying, but it’s rarely boring. (Patrick Delage is credited as co-director.)

On the music front, Heitor Pereira returns to provide the film’s effective, at times eclectic score. Pharrell Williams’ past “Despicable” themes are reprised, plus Williams wrote and performs the catchy new original song “Double Life.” There are also several fun needle drops and a lively, late-breaking use of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”

A tremendous amount of craft, talent, resources and, no doubt, affection goes into a film like this, all of which can’t be overlooked. One just wishes the final product evolved the series into something smarter and more dimensional and offered perhaps a timelier, more meaningful message for family audiences. Well, there’s always “Despicable Me 5.”
