Uploading Files to the Content Area in D2L

Files uploaded to Content can be viewed and downloaded by users. Instructors can upload files in the following ways:

  • Upload a File from a Computer
  • Upload a File from Google Drive
  • Upload a File from OneDrive

Upload Files from a Computer

D2L allows the upload of common file types such as PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, and PPTX. These files are displayed within a document viewer in the Content area.

A module must be created first before files can be added. See Creating a Module for instructions.

  • Go to a module in Content.
  • Select the  Upload/Create  [A] button.

Select Upload Files

  • The Add a File pop-up window will open. Select the  Upload button to locate the file or drag the file from the computer desktop and drop it within the dotted box.
  • Select the Add button.

Note: It is possible to select more than one file at a time in step 3. This will save time if uploading multiple files at once.

Upload Files from Google Drive

  • Go to a module in content.
  • Select the  Existing Activities  button.
  • Select  Google Drive  from the dropdown menu. Google will require login information to be entered if this is the first time using Google Drive in D2L.

Note: If the file is not publicly viewable, a notification saying "This file is private" will appear. Next to this, a checkbox will say "Change permissions so that anyone with a link can view." If this box is unchecked, students will not be able to view the file .

  • Choose  Select.
  • The file is now embedded in the module.

Note: If the file is set to "Anyone with the link can view," students will only be able to view the document. If it is set to "Anyone with the link can edit," students will be able to make changes to the document (e.g. a sign-up sheet).

Upload Files from Microsoft OneDrive

Files can be uploaded from Microsoft OneDrive directly into a module. This will create a live link to the Microsoft Web version. Any changes made to the document in Microsoft are pushed instantaneously to the live link in the course. A Microsoft account is required to use OneDrive, so a DePaul email address can be used.

Note: To link to a file in OneDrive, instructors must be the original owner of the file. If the file was downloaded from elsewhere or shared with the instructor, OneDrive will link to the entire folder in which the file is stored (sharing permissions as set on the folder will still apply).

  • Go to the module in content.
  • Select the  Existing Activities  button, then
  • Select  OneDrive  from the dropdown menu. Microsoft will require login information to be entered in order to allow access from D2L.
  • From the Add Activity window, select the file that needs to be inserted.
  • The file is now linked in the module.

Note: By default, files are set to "Read Only."

View  Reordering Modules and Topics  for more information on how to reorganize files.

How can we help you today, d2l assignment setup (faculty) print.

Modified on: Wed, 28 Jul, 2021 at 11:44 AM

This article demonstrates how to create a D2L Assignment. The D2L Assignment tool allows instructors to collect student assignment submissions electronically, allowing for easy tracking of student submissions. The Assignment tool allows instructors to view and evaluate assignment submissions within the D2L Annotation tool and return scores and feedback to students in an efficient manner.

Setting up a New Assignment Folder

Navigate to the Assignment tool by clicking "Assessments > Assignments" in the navigation menu.

On the Assignments page, click the “New Assignment”  button.

Assignments default to "ungraded." If this is a graded assignment, click "ungraded"  to enter the score value.

Click on "In Grades" to:

  • Choose from Grades -   Create a new grade item or choose an existing grade item to tie to this assignment.
  • Remove from Grades -  Allows the assignment to be scored, but the score will not be included in the gradebook.
  • Reset to Ungraded -  Changes the assignment back to the default ungraded assignment.

When choosing from grades, you can create a new grade item for the assignment, or associate it to an existing grade item.

Availability Dates & Conditions

  • Start Date  and End Date controls when the assignment is available to students.
  • Release conditions   control access to the assignment based on other conditions.
  • Special access can make the assignment available to individual students outside the normal assignment requirements.

Submission & Completion

  • Individual assignment – Each user submits files and the files assessed individually. (Default )
  • Group assignment – Any member of the assigned group can submit an assignment to a group folder. Group members are assigned a common grade during evaluation. Groups must be setup first to enable this assignment type.
  • File submission -  learners upload and submit a file to the assignment. A file upload is required.
  • Text submission -  learners post text, image, or a link to their work in a text box within the assignment. A file upload is not required.
  • On paper submission -  learners submit a physical copy of their assignment directly to their instructor. No file upload is required to complete the assignment.
  • Observed in person -  allows instructors to observe learners as they perform tasks, such as in-class presentations, and evaluate them using Assignments. No file upload is required to complete the assignment.
  • Set the “Submission Options”  to designate the number of submissions allowed and which submissions are retained by the system. Submission options will vary depending on the submission type.
  • Enter a notification email if you wish to be notified each time an assignment is submitted.

Evaluation & Feedback

  • You can attach a D2L Rubric by clicking “Add rubric.” For more information on D2L Rubrics, see the Rubrics Setup article .
  • KU is not currently using Learning Objectives.
  • Enables the Annotation tools for assignment assessment.
  • Enable Turnitin Feedback Studio (Originality Check and GradeMark) .

Assignment Categories

You can add Assignments to categories in the bulk edit mode. First check off the assignments you want to add categories for, and then click “bulk edit.”

On the bulk edit page, there will be a “category” drop down for each assignment to apply the appropriate category.

How to upload assignment files on behalf of student?

Etienne.L.304

How does an instructor upload the assignment on behalf of a student should there be a need? Trying to submit the file under evaluate does not actually add the file - just gives a preview of how the student would do the process. Impersonate as student does also not work.

  • Assignments
  • Roles and Permissions

Sam.B.358

Hi Etienne,

Your institution would need to allow the Instructor role to impersonate students and then under classlist, you should see a dropdown with an option for “Impersonate ”

This option creates a live session as the user, so that's just something to keep in mind.

Documentation for this:

Impersonate a User : A user can impersonate another user from the Classlist tool. For example, it would be beneficial to impersonate a user when submitting a quiz on their behalf. The ability to enable user impersonation is set in the Users tool's permissions. Contact your administrator for more details.

  • On the navbar, click  Classlist .
  • From the context menu of the user you want to impersonate, click  Impersonate .

Sangeetha.T.629

Hi @Gerald.T.717 ,

Thanks for reaching us through community!!

Did you tried impersonating the student and ran API call - POST /d2l/api/le/ ( version ) / ( orgUnitId ) /dropbox/folders/ ( folderId ) /submissions/mysubmissions/

If you have issues then you might need to raise a support case to check further.

Hi @Sangeetha.T.629 how does one impersonate a student?

I have gone thru the docs and the only way to get a student's user context is by having the student login first. We would like to find a way to impersonate a student w/o having the student having to login?

Thanks for the update.

A user can impersonate another user from the Classlist tool. The ability to enable user impersonation is set in the Users tool's permissions. Contact your administrator for more details.

Is there a programmatic way to achieve this impersonation?

There’s no real way to simulate impersonation via an API call
