This section describes how to set up a new presentation. The settings selected here are general/they apply to all the slides. The section Working with slides explains how to apply settings to specific slides. These explanations can also apply to some of the general settings.

Planning a presentation

The first thing to do is to decide what you are going to do with the presentation. For example, putting a group of digital photos together in a presentation requires very little planning. However, using a presentation to increase the knowledge of others about your topic requires much more planning.

This chapter has been put into presentation form and is available for download from . It was developed by using the steps in this chapter.

You need to ask and answer many questions before you begin creating a presentation. If you are not acquainted with creating presentations, the answers will be more general. Those who have created a variety of presentations in the past will want to have more specific answers.

Who is to see the presentation? How will it be used? What is the subject matter? What should be in its outline? How detailed should the outline be? Will an audio file be played? Is animation desirable? How should the transition between slides be handled? These are some of the many questions that should be asked, answered, and written down before creating the presentation. Sound and animation are more advanced topics and are explained in the Impress Guide .

Again, it is not always necessary at this point to have specific answers to every question. Making an outline is extremely important. You may already know exactly what some of the slides will contain. You may only have a general idea of what you want on some of the slides. That is alright. You can make some changes as you go. Change your outline to match the changes you make in your slides.

The important part is that you have a general idea of what you want and how to get it. Put that information on paper. That makes it much easier to create the presentation.

Starting the Presentation Wizard

You can start Impress in either of two ways:

  • Click the triangle to the right of the New Icon and select Presentation from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose File > New > Presentation from the menu bar.

When you start Impress, the Presentation Wizard appears.

If you do not want the wizard to start every time you launch Impress, select the checkbox.

Choose a design under Select a slide design . The slide design section gives you two main choices: Presentation Backgrounds and Presentations . Each one has a list of choices for slide designs. If you want to use one of these other than <Original>, click it to select it.

The types of Presentation Backgrounds are shown in Figure 2. By clicking an item, you will see a preview of the slide design in the Preview window. Impress contains three choices under Presentations : < Original >, Introducing a New Product , and Recommendation of a Strategy .

  • <Original> is for a blank presentation slide design.
  • Both Introducing a New Product and Recommendation of a Strategy have their own prepackaged slide designs. Each design appears in the Preview window when its name is clicked.

Select how the presentation will be used under Select an output medium . Most often, presentations are created for computer screen display. Select Screen .

Click Next . The Presentation Wizard step 3 appears.

Choose the desired option from the Effect drop-down menu.

You might want to accept the default values for both and unless you are skilled at doing this. Both of these values can be changed later while working with and . These two are explained in more detail later in this chapter.

Select the desired speed for the transition between the different slides in the presentation from the Speed drop-down menu. Medium is a good choice for now.

Click Create . A new presentation is created.

If you selected on step 1 of the Wizard, the button will be active on step 3 and other pages will be available. These pages are not described here.

How to Play PowerPoint Slides Automatically

Lia

The PowerPoint autoplay feature is an amazing tool for creating slideshows that advance automatically . Self-running PowerPoint presentations are great for leaving in kiosks or publicity booths. You can even show them with recordings or voiceovers to make sure your audience gets the most out of it.

Forget worrying about clicking from slide to slide, today we will teach you how to play PowerPoint slides automatically!

We’ll cover the following topics:

Why should you use the automatic slideshow PowerPoint feature?

  • How to Play PowerPoint Slides Automatically without Clicking - Option 1

How to automatically play PowerPoint presentations across devices

How to play powerpoint slides automatically without clicking on mac, elevate your presentation with professional designs: try 24slides today.

Using the automatic slideshow feature has many benefits . The main one is its practicality; it is a tool you can set up in advance so that you eliminate the need for ongoing attention and your presentation flow is better.

And that’s not all, you can even add voiceovers, recordings, and even laser pointer gestures to make sure your audience gets the most out of your presentation.

It becomes particularly beneficial in the following scenarios:

  • Business presentations: An automatically progressing presentation can help you focus on your content without worrying about going slide by slide, which can often be distracting and disrupt your rhythm.
  • Publicity: Self-running presentations can be great if you use them for publicity. For example, if you have a kiosk or booth, a self-running PowerPoint slideshow can help you reach more people without them having to speak one-on-one with a salesperson.
  • E-Learning: In e-learning modules or training presentations, autoplay can help learners progress through the material while listening to your lecture. However, they can also pause and rewind to go to the specific section they wish to revisit.
  • Photo or Video Slideshows: Autoplay is commonly used in photo or video slideshows for events such as weddings or birthdays. It can serve as a background loop, or you can present it at a special moment along with music or narration to enhance the experience.

How to Play PowerPoint Slides Automatically without Clicking: Option 1

There are a couple of different ways to make your slides run automatically, and we'll go over both options. This first option is for when you need a really customized presentation: personalized timing for each slide, voiceovers, or laser pointer gestures .

If this is your case, go ahead with this section, but if you’d like something a bit simpler, proceed to Option 2.

  • The first step is to go to the Slide Show Tab. On the Set Up group, you’ll find the Set Up Slide Show option to start customizing your self-running presentation.

open office play presentation

  • Once the Set Up Show Window opens, deselect the Presented by a speaker option, as it refers to manually advancing your slides, either by clicking or using keys. Next, consider several options for the automatic slideshow:

open office play presentation

  • Browsed by an individual is one choice for creating a self-running PowerPoint presentation. This option permits you to deliver your slides within a window, as opposed to the typical full-screen mode. Ensure that the Use timings, if present option is enabled for this feature to function correctly.
  • Another option is the Browsed at a kiosk , which allows you to run a full-screen, continuous slideshow automatically. This option locks in both the looping and timing settings, ensuring that your slideshow will continue until you press the ESC key.

If you’re not sure what option is the best for you, remember you can always select manually the loop and timings option . Try different options with these and try out how your presentation will look like with the different settings.

  • The next step is to set your timings. This means defining how much time you want your PowerPoint slideshow to spend on each slide before automatically advancing to the next one.

To set your timings, click on Rehearse Timings , which will allow you to go through your presentation slide by slide, and it’ll record how much time you spend on each one.

After you finish going through all your slides, a message will pop up to save your timings. Click yes so you can save the time spent on each slide.

Adding audio to your automatic PowerPoint is a fantastic feature to enhance your professional image and communicate your content without needing to be present. Let’s take a look at how to do it:

  • Go to the Slide Show Tab and select Record Slide Show . Choose Record From Beginning to start with the first slide.

open office play presentation

When the fullscreen opens, you will be able to see your first slide along with several options:

  • Start in Settings (1) and select the tools you will be using. You have the option to use a microphone, or you can record yourself talking on camera. Choose your microphone and/or camera for recording.
  • Next (2) , decide whether you want to have the microphone or camera you selected turned on. You can also choose to have a video preview.
  • When you're ready to start recording, go to the top left corner (3) and click Record to start, Stop to pause, and Replay to review how it went.
  • Once you finish with a slide, click on the right arrow (4) to move to the next slide.
  • If you have Speaker notes in your slides, you can view them in (5) while you record.
  • In the Pens and Markers section (6) , you can draw on the screen and make any annotations you want.
  • Finally, the Clear option (7) allows you to clear existing recordings on the current slide or on all slides if you are unsatisfied and want to redo your recording.

Check out some expert best practices for Automatic slideshows in PowerPoint

Now that you've learned how to make a PowerPoint slideshow run automatically, we'll give you the secrets to make your presentation stand out . Let's take a look at some insights from our expert designers .

Avoid too much text

Remember that your time per slide is limited , so it is important not to put too much text since your audience will not have time to read it. Try to express your message in the shortest possible text, and if necessary, revise and rewrite it as many times as necessary to synthesize it.

Limit interactive elements

Limit or avoid interactive elements such as hyperlinks that rely on user interaction since they may not function in PowerPoint autoplay mode.

However, if you want your audience or potential clients to take a specific action, consider using a QR code. Only make sure to leave the slide displayed for enough time for them to use it.

Practice, practice, practice

Keep in mind that your speech needs to fit perfectly with your timings for each slide. So, practicing your presentation multiple times is crucial to ensure a seamless and synchronized delivery.

First, go to the Slide Show Tab and select Set Up Slide Show .

open office play presentation

  • When the Set Up Show Window opens, deselect the Presented by a speaker option and consider the following options to set up your automatic slideshow:

  • Browsed by an individual : With this option, you can show your slides within a window instead of the typical full-screen mode. Make sure that the Use timings, if present option is selected.
  • Another option is the Browsed at a kiosk : This option locks in both the looping and timing settings, ensuring that your slideshow will continue until you press the ESC key.
  • Next, you need to set your timings. This involves determining the duration for each slide so that it advances automatically to the next one when you have finished presenting it.

To set your timings, go to the Slide Show Tab and click on Rehearse Timings.

open office play presentation

A window will open, allowing you to go through your presentation slide by slide, and it will record how much time you spend on each one . As you progress through each slide, it will confirm the time spent, and you can either agree or choose to re-record.

After you finish going through all your slides, a message will pop up to save your timings . Click yes so you can save the time spent on each slide.

New Platforms, New Players: Four Fan-Favorite Xbox Games Coming to Nintendo Switch and Sony Platforms

At Xbox, we strive to create games that inspire, entertain, and connect players from around the world. As a publisher and platform we are committed to meeting players where they are, by bringing more games, to more people, and on more devices. And at the heart of all we do are our players, and the vibrant communities that they build around the games they love.

Today we are announcing that four fan-favorite Xbox games will be coming to Nintendo Switch and Sony platforms this spring. The studios that built these celebrated games have drawn on their multi-platform experience to open the worlds they created to even more players and communities.

  • Pentiment from Obsidian Entertainment, a truly unique, critically acclaimed, and award-winning narrative adventure game with a striking visual style inspired by history itself will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch on February 22.
  • Hi-Fi RUSH , the award-winning and beloved rhythm-based action game where the world syncs to the music from Tango Gameworks/Bethesda Softworks will be coming to PlayStation 5 on March 19 at midnight UTC, with pre-purchase available on PlayStation 5 digital storefronts on February 22.
  • Grounded – also from Obsidian Entertainment – a co-op survival adventure phenomenon that has welcomed 20 million players into the backyard, will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch on April 16. Cross play will be supported across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.
  • Sea of Thieves , the shared world adventure game from Rare, will be coming to PlayStation 5 on April 30 – and will be available to wishlist by PlayStation 5 players starting tomorrow, February 22. Having built a passionate community of more than 35 million players from around the world, the support of cross play for Xbox, PlayStation and PC will allow players to experience epic pirate adventures with friends on more platforms.

These titles join franchises like Minecraft , Call of Duty , Overwatch and Diablo – which already reach players and fans on multiple platforms – and we’re excited for more players to experience these worlds and stories on more platforms.

Whether it’s Nintendo Switch and PlayStation players surviving in the backyard together in Grounded , or PlayStation players getting to live a pirate’s life in Sea of Thieves , with cross-play, these multiplayer titles available will bring more people together and continue to grow their communities of players.

Last week on The Official Xbox Podcast , we also discussed how our Xbox consoles will continue to provide a flagship experience for players . This is what it means to be a part of Xbox:

  • The biggest games in the world will be on Xbox.
  • Our first party games will come to Game Pass day one.
  • A robust and innovative multi-year hardware roadmap.
  • Compatibility with your library is a priority, inclusive of cross-play, cross-save, and robust cloud features.
  • Xbox will continue to help game creators find the biggest audience possible.

And as we shared at Developer_Direct , earlier this year, players can look forward to Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II , Avowed , Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and more on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass this year.

There’s never been a better time to play, and we can’t wait for more players to experience these great games.

Scottie Scheffler gets the Olympic gold medal in a thriller in Paris

Updated on: August 4, 2024 / 6:13 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Scottie Scheffler added an Olympic gold medal to his already astonishing season after he held off challenges from Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama in a thriller at Le Golf National.

The six-time winner on the PGA Tour this year – and the world's No. 1 player – rallied from four shots behind with a 9-under 62 to win and kept some 30,000 fans on edge for a wild final tour hours.

GOLF-OLY-PARIS-2024

In his search for Olympic glory, Scheffler had plenty of help.

Jon Rahm of Spain had a four-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood when he stepped on the 11th tee. Fleetwood caught him in two holes as the Spaniard had a stunning collapse.

That opened the door for six players — including Victor Perez of France, who came within one shot of the podium.

But it was Scheffler who charged to the front with four straight birdies down the stretch, none bigger than gouging a shot out of deep rough on the 17th hole and making the 18-foot birdie putt to take the lead for the first time all day.

He set an Olympic record for 72 holes at 19-under 265. Fleetwood, who fell out of the lead with a bogey from the rough on the 17th, got up and down for par on the final hole for a 66 to win the silver medal.

The bronze went to Hideki Matsuyama, in the mix on the back nine until closing with six straight pars for a 65.

Scheffler becomes the second straight American to win gold in men's golf, following Xander Schauffele in the Tokyo Games.

Schauffele was tied for the 54-hole lead with Rahm until he had a collapse of his own. So did Rory McIlroy, one off the lead until hitting a wedge into the water on the 15th hole.

Drag queens shine at Olympics opening, but ‘Last Supper’ tableau draws criticism

Controversial social media personality Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan held a demonstration near the French Embassy in Bucharest on Sunday. The pair were protesting the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, claiming the Last Supper parody during the ceremony “mocked Christianity”. (AP video shot by Nicolae Dumitrache)

PARIS (AP) — In an unprecedented display of inclusivity, drag queens took center stage at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, showcasing the vibrant and influential role of the French LGBTQ+ community — while also attracting criticism over a tableau reminiscent of “The Last Supper.”

Held along the Seine River, the spectacular four-hour event featured global stars such as Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, both considered queer icons. The ceremony blended historic and modern French culture with a touch of kitsch, culminating in a flotilla of barges carrying thousands of Olympians.

Nicky Doll, known for competing on the 12th season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and hosting “Drag Race France,” participated in a high-octane fashion runway segment along with “Drag Race France” Season 1 winner Paloma, Season 3’s Piche, and Giselle Palmer. Initially, they stood alongside the runway, gazing fiercely at the strutting models. Later, they joined in, showcasing their own style.

Le Filip, the recent winner of “Drag Race France,” expressed their positive “surprise” and “pride” at the ceremony’s scale and representation.

“I thought it would be a five-minute drag event with queer representation. I was amazed. It started with Lady Gaga, then we had drag queens, a huge rave, and a fire in the sky,” they said. “It felt like a crowning all over again. I am proud to see my friends and queer people on the world stage.”

Among their bold performances was a scene that seemed to evoke Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” featuring the drag queens and other performers in a configuration reminiscent of Jesus Christ and his apostles. This segment drew significant attention — and mixed reactions.

“The (French) government knows what it’s doing. They want to show themselves in the best way possible. They showed no restraints in expression,” Le Filip told The Associated Press.

On the other hand, prominent far-right politician Marion Maréchal denounced the performance on social media.

“To all the Christians of the world who are watching the Paris 2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation,” she posted on the social platform X, a sentiment that was echoed by religious conservatives internationally.

“... because decapitating Habsburgs and ridiculising central Christian events are really the FIRST two things that spring to mind when you think of #OlympicGames,” Eduard Habsburg, Hungary’s ambassador to the Vatican, posted on X, also referencing a scene depicting the beheading of Marie Antoinette.

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony, afterward drew attention away from “The Last Supper” references, saying that hadn’t been his intention.

Le Filip responded to the criticism of the scene with a touch of humor and sorrow.

“It feels like the words of somebody who didn’t get on the guest list. We could all be laughing together. It’s sad to me, honestly,” they said.

Inter-LGBT President James Leperlier was more circumspect, arguing that France still has significant strides to make in inclusivity.

“We know in the LGBTQ community in France we are far from what the ceremony showed. There’s much progress to do in society regarding transgender people. It’s terrible that to legally change their identity they are forced to be on trial,” Leperlier said.

He also highlighted the disparity in acceptance, saying that the community is not visible in other official ceremonies and “has difficulty being heard.”

“If you saw the opening ceremony last night you’d think it was like that normally, but it’s not. France tried to show what it should be and not what it is,” he said.

The opening ceremony came as drag and the voguing nightclub scene in France has experienced a revival. The cabaret club Madame Arthur, founded in 1946 in the ashes of World War II, is one of the world’s oldest continually running LGBTQ+ theaters. It opened as Europe was only just beginning to understand the extent of the widespread murder of members of the queer community in WWII and is currently experiencing a massive renaissance.

Drag is not just a pastime; for many minority French communities who feel alienated over tensions arising from divisive politics and scars from the anti-gay marriage protests a decade ago, it’s a statement of defiance. Many gay Black and Arab youths — especially those from Paris’ less affluent and religiously conservative suburbs — and others who feel a sense of disconnect with French society find voguing and drag events safe places where their identities can be expressed without fear of reprisal.

Despite the backlash, Le Filip believes the opening ceremony will ultimately transcend controversy.

“The message of the show is freedom, and it’s a good postcard for France,” they concluded.

Associated Press journalist John Leicester contributed reporting.

Winner: Novak Djokovic takes the gold medal

Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on Sunday, 7-6(3), 7-6(2), to win the 2024 Olympic tennis men's singles gold medal.

MATCH STATS l MEN'S SINGLES BRACKET

Djokovic did not drop a singular set throughout the tennis tournament. With his gold medal win, Novak Djokovic is officially the oldest person to win the Olympic singles tournament since 1908. Djokovic has also completed a career "Golden Slam," which is when a player has won all four Grand Slam titles and the gold at the Olympics.

Arguably the biggest success I've ever had.

— Djokovic on his gold medal win in Paris

Who else has won a career Golden Slam in tennis?

Besides the newly gilded Djokovic, only four other tennis players have completed the Golden Slam: Steffi Graff (GER), Andre Agassi (USA), Rafael Nadal (ESP), and Serena Williams (USA).

Set 2 updates

In an epic tiebreak to finally put a period on this match, Novak Djokovic won the tiebreak, 7-2, to win the match.

Tied at 6-all, Djokovic once again pushes Alcaraz to a tiebreak. This could turn very fast in favor of the No. 1 seed.

Alcaraz is up 6-5, and is so close to closing this set. He'll need to keep his forced errors at bay.

Three game points later and Alcaraz continues his lead in the second set. Can he break the Joker to put a set on his match card?

Djokovic serves to take the game. His serve has proven reliable when it counts throughout this match.

Alcaraz holds to continue his second set lead, 4-3. If there was ever a time for Alcaraz to turn the burners up, now would be it.

Alcaraz feeds off the crowd as he taps a drop shot over the net, holding his ear to the audience after, signaling he loves the crowd applause.

An interesting stat — Alcaraz has made 28 winners in the match, far exceeding Djokovic's 10. But he also exceeds Djokovic's forced errors, racking up 30 to Djokovic's 19. Match time has surpassed 2 hours.

Alcaraz serves to start the set, and manages to hold Game 3, a pivotal point to keep the Spaniard in the lead in Set 2. He'll have to break ahead at some point if he hopes to win the set. Match time currently at 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Set 1 updates

At 3-2 in the tiebreak, as Djokovic serves, the crowd chants, "Hold it."

Alcaraz tied the first set to 6-all, Djokovic starts serving the tiebreak.

Game 12: Djokovic closing in on Set 1

Djokovic once again holds — yes, this seems to be the pattern of the match, and is up 6-5 in the first. It'll be critical for him to break Alcaraz next game in order stave off a first set tiebreak. Set 1 currently timed at 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Game 8: The battle for a break continues

Djokovic's defense is relentless. Alcaraz pushed the game to six — yes six — break points, but Djokovic persevered.

Game 7: Alcaraz frustrated

Djokovic once again holds, 4-3.

After dropping the first point of the game, Alcaraz screams in frustration. The Spaniard can't seem to catch a literal break over Djokovic.

Fan fun : The fans are out in full force, some wearing berets to honor Paris, and one fan was shaking what looked like a bowl full of fake paella, supporting the Spaniard.

Game 6: Will the holds ever end?

Djokovic is up 3-2 in the first. He managed to fight back against two break points to hold. Closing in on 40 minutes on the court.  There appeared to be a glint of physical pain from the No. 1 seed, as he seemed to wince after one point, undoubtedly from his knee.

Game 3: Djokovic holds

After taking a two-point lead, Alcaraz makes four unforced errors in a row, helping the Serbian hold.

Djokovic got a knee surgery after the French Open, and despite getting on-court treatment during his match against Italy's Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals, he seems to be gliding around the court effortlessly.

Game 2: Djokovic fails to break Alcaraz

Game 2 goes to the young gun, with serves hitting speeds of 123 mph, Alcaraz is setting himself up for a victory.

At 30-15 in Game 2, Alcaraz approached the net, prepared to put a point away, but Djokovic blasted a cross-court shot right by him — Alcaraz didn't even reach for it.

At deuce, Alcaraz went big to finish the game, but served it wide. He came back the next point to bring it back to deuce with a deceptive forehand drop shot.

Game 1: Djokovic takes the first game

Djokovic takes the opening game in just four minutes.

Coin toss: Djokovic to open the match serving

Djokovic has won the coin toss and will serve to start the match.

The stadium is buzzing, and big names have taken a seat to watch this box-office brawl.

Attendees include the King and Q ueen of Denmark , Sharon Stone and Serena Williams , who has not only captured all Grand Slam titles, but multiple Olympic gold medals as well, making her a "Golden Slam" champion.

Pre-match: Novak Djokovic takes on Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Olympic tennis concludes today with a marquee match for the ages. All-time men's tennis title winner Novak Djokovic of Serbia goes head-to-head with the leader of the new era of tennis, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.

Even though the pair are both bidding for the same goal - their first Olympic gold medal, they come to the Games in diametrically opposite places in their careers.

At 21 years old, Alcaraz has already captured four Grand Slam titles, including the French Open trophy in May. Alcaraz burst onto the tennis scene at just 16, and in the ensuing years has postured himself to be the game's next great  leading man. Should he win the gold medal, he will become the youngest Olympic singles champion and would join Steffi Graf and Rafael Nadal in winning the French, Wimbledon and Olympic titles in the same year.

While Djokovic's trophy case is bursting at the seams with accolades aplenty, there is one precious piece of metal that has eluded him throughout his career: an Olympic gold. Some say the Serbian is long overdue. Djokovic has only managed an Olympic best of a bronze in 2008 in his five Games appearances. At 37, Djokovic is the oldest player to reach the Olympic men's singles final since tennis returned to the Games program in 1988. Paris may be his last shot to finally end his medal drought. Should he emerge the victor, Djokovic would complete the "Golden Slam" in singles, which is when a player has won all four Grand Slam titles and the gold at the Olympics. To elevate to a "Golden Slam" champion would put Djokovic in rarefied air. Only four other tennis players have completed it: Steffi Graff (GER), Andre Agassi (USA), Nadal (ESP), and Serena Williams (USA).

The pair are currently split in matchups, but Alcaraz took the win in their last meeting at the men's singles final at Wimbledon, decimating Djokovic in straight sets.

While Alcaraz comes to the clay with youth on his side, Djokovic brings with him something even more potent: a champion's final chance for glory.

This dream is long lived and fought for. I wanted to compete in the finals of Olympic games for such a long time. Representing my country at a global event is a huge privilege and honor that I cherish. Serbia will have a medal on Sunday!!! Ideeeemooooo 🥳🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸 pic.twitter.com/GLywjKPNNd — Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) August 2, 2024

Novak Djokovic beats Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Olympic gold medal

open office play presentation

PARIS – Novak Djokovic finally has an Olympic gold medal around his neck.

After chasing this last prize his entire career – the only major accomplishment in tennis he hadn’t been able to check off – the 37-year old Djokovic was down to his last chance at the Paris Olympics .

Summoning every bit of energy he had left in the tank Sunday, against the 21-year old who has taken his place on top of the sport, Djokovic managed to play one of the best matches of his career to beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 inside Court Philippe Chatrier.

When it was over after 2 hours, 37 minutes and one monster down-the-line forehand on match point, Djokovic dropped his racket and put his hands over his mouth. Then, after an embrace with Alcaraz, he dropped to his knees in exhaustion and emotion and stayed down for nearly a minute. Then he went into the stands, embracing his team and family.

Even for a man with 24 Grand Slam titles and nearly every significant record in the sport, this is the crowning achievement that he has long sought. Because this one wasn’t just for himself, it was for his beloved Serbia.

A lifelong dream realized. 🥹 Novak Djokovic is overcome by emotion after winning his first Olympic gold medal. #ParisOlympics pic.twitter.com/g7GI6cxmYa — NBC Olympics & Paralympics (@NBCOlympics) August 4, 2024

After gutting defeats in Rio and Tokyo, Djokovic wanted this badly. Even built his year around it. But after injuring his knee during the French Open and having meniscus surgery, it was unclear whether he would even be healthy enough to play the Olympics.

But Djokovic managed to return in time for Wimbledon, getting to the finals before Alcaraz crushed him in three sets.

This one was tightly played throughout, with no breaks of serve on either side. In the end, Djokovic was better in both tiebreakers.

  • Running a slide show

Slide transitions are the effects that take place when one slide gives way to the next one in the presentation, like Roll down from top or Fly in from left . They add dynamic flair to a slideshow, smoothing the transition between slides.

You can add transitions while in Slide Sorter view or in Normal view. To see the effect of a selection, you need to be in Normal view and select the Automatic preview checkbox on the Slide Transition page of the Tasks pane.

You can apply a single type of transition to all slides in the presentation or apply a different transition to any single slide, even having a different transition for every slide in the show. While using many different transitions may be fun to do, it may not give your show a professional appearance.

If you want most of the slides to have the same transition, but a few to be different, you may find it easiest to apply one transition to all slides and then change only the ones you want to be different.

Setting the timing of automatic slide changes

You can set up a slide show to run automatically, either unattended or while you speak. To set the default time for slides to be displayed before changing to the next slide, go to the Slide Transition pane, leave the transition effect set to No Transition, choose Automatically after in the Advance slide section, set a time, and click the Apply to All Slides button.

To vary the times for some slides, choose Slide Show > Rehearse Timings from the menu bar, or click the Rehearse Timings icon on the Slide Show toolbar. The slide show begins in full-screen mode, and a timer appears in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

When you want to advance to the next slide, click the timer. To keep the default setting for this slide, click the slide, not the timer. Continue for all slides in your presentation. Impress records the display time for each slide. Save your presentation. When you next look at the time set under Automatically after, you will see that the times have changed to match what you set when rehearsing.

If you want the whole presentation to auto-repeat, open the menu Slide Show > Slide Show Settings . Click Auto and OK .

Applying a slide transition effect

In the Tasks pane, choose Slide Transition .

In the Slides pane or Slide Sorter view, select the slides to which you want to apply the transition. If you want the transition to apply to all slides, you do not need to select them first.

In the Apply to selected slides list, select a transition.

Modify the selected transition by changing the speed or adding a sound, in the Modify transition area. If you choose to play a sound, select it in the Sound list. The Loop until next sound checkbox now becomes active. Select this checkbox to play the sound repeatedly until another sound starts.

Choose how to advance to the next slide: manually (on mouse click) or automatically. If you choose automatically, you can specify how long the slide remains visible before it automatically advances to the next slide.

If you want the effect you just defined to apply to all slides in the show, click the Apply to All Slides button.

To preview the transition effect, click the Play button.

To start the slide show from the current slide (so you can see all the transitions), click the Slide Show button.

Playing a sound throughout the presentation

You can use the Slide Transition pane to set up Impress so that a sound or a song is played throughout the presentation. To do that:

  • Select the slide where you want the sound to start and go to the Slide Transition pane.
  • In the Modify transition section, select the entry Other sound from the Sound drop-down menu.
  • Select the Loop until next sound checkbox if you want the sound to restart once it is finished.
Do not click the button, otherwise your selected sound will restart at every slide.
The sound file is linked to the presentation rather than embedded, therefore if you plan to display the presentation on a different machine, remember that you also have to make the sound file available on the machine where the presentation will be played and re-establish the link to the local sound file before starting the slideshow.

Removing a transition effect

  • Select the desired slides.
  • Choose No Transition in the list on the Slide Transition page of the Tasks pane.
