78th Independence Day: North East’s crucial role in India’s freedom movement

Indigenous leaders from north east india's significant, though frequently overshadowed, contributions were crucial in resisting british colonial rule. their heroic efforts and leadership played a pivotal role in the broader freedom struggle, underscoring the essential part they played in india's fight for independence. their stories, while often underrepresented, are fundamental to understanding the full scope of the nation's journey to freedom.

The saga of India’s struggle for independence is often dominated by the towering figures of the national movement – Gandhi, Nehru, Bose, and Patel – whose contributions are etched in the annals of history. However, this narrative often overshadows the valiant efforts of lesser-known heroes, particularly those from Northeast India. As the nation celebrates its 78th Independence Day, it is imperative to acknowledge and honour the critical, yet frequently overlooked, role that the people of Northeast India played in the fight against British colonial rule.

1. Pre-Colonial North East: A diverse and autonomous region

The North East, comprising Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, has a rich history of resistance against colonialism. Before the British set foot in the North East, the region was a mosaic of independent kingdoms and autonomous tribal communities. The Ahom Kingdom in Assam, for instance, was a powerful state that successfully resisted Mughal invasions and maintained its sovereignty until the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826 marked its annexation by the British. The Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes in Meghalaya also enjoyed a high degree of autonomy, governing themselves through intricate socio-political systems.

The British colonizers employed a combination of treaties, coercion, and military force to bring these territories under their control. By the late 19th century, most of the North East was annexed, laying the groundwork for resistance from the indigenous communities.

2. Early resistance and revolts: The spark of defiance

The people of North East India were quick to rise against British encroachment. The Khasi Rebellion (1829-1833), led by U Tirot Sing, was one of the earliest and most significant uprisings. The Khasi tribes fiercely opposed the British attempts to build a road through their territory, viewing it as a direct threat to their sovereignty. Though the rebellion was eventually suppressed, it remains a powerful symbol of resistance.

Similarly, the Kuki Rebellion (1917-1919) saw the Kukis, a prominent tribe in Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram, rise in revolt against British recruitment drives during World War I. The rebellion underscored the tribal communities’ fierce independence and their refusal to bow to foreign domination.

The Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, led by Prince Tikendrajit Singh, was a pivotal moment in the region’s history, showcasing the heroic resistance of Manipuri forces against British colonialism. Despite the defeat and execution of key leaders, the war remains a powerful symbol of defiance against imperial rule.

3. Participation in the Civil Disobedience Movement

The North East’s involvement in Mahatma Gandhi’s Civil Disobedience Movement was marked by widespread protests, boycotts of British goods, and refusal to pay taxes. In Assam, leaders like Nalinibala Devi played pivotal roles in mobilizing women and spreading the message of non-cooperation. The region’s participation in this nationwide movement demonstrated its commitment to the larger cause of Indian independence.

4. Indigenous Leaders: Champions of freedom

North East India produced several leaders whose contributions to the freedom struggle were extraordinary. Among them, Rani Gaidinliu, born in a Naga village in Tamenglong, Manipur, stands out. She joined the Heraka religious movement at the age of 13 and began organising resistance against British rule. Her defiance led to her arrest in 1932, and she spent 14 years in prison, earning the title of “Rani” from Jawaharlal Nehru for her courage.

U Tirot Sing, the Khasi chief, and Kanaklata Barua, a young Assamese martyr of the Quit India Movement, are other notable figures. Matmur Jamoh, an Adi warrior from Arunachal Pradesh, led a revolt that resulted in the killing of a British official, while Maniram Dewan of Assam coordinated efforts to challenge British authority, ultimately paying with his life.

These leaders, along with others like Baisnab Charan Samantray, Sarania Phukan, Aziz Ahmed, Phungzathang Tonsing, Kushal Konwar, and many more, symbolize the indomitable spirit of resistance that characterized the region.

5. World War II: North East as a strategic frontier

During World War II, the geopolitical significance of Northeast India came to the fore. The region’s proximity to Burma (now Myanmar) made it a critical front in the battle against Japanese forces, who had allied with Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army (INA). The Battles of Kohima and Imphal in 1944 were among the most significant in the Asian theatre of World War II, with the INA’s participation adding momentum to the freedom movement within the region.

6. The final push for Independence and the role of Assam

Assam played a crucial role in the Quit India Movement of 1942. The British crackdown on the movement was brutal, but it only strengthened the resolve of the Assamese people. Leaders like Gopinath Bordoloi, who later became Assam’s first chief minister, was very active in this phase of the struggle. Bordoloi’s leadership ensured that Assam’s interests were safeguarded during the tumultuous period of partition and independence.

For the tribal communities of the North East, the freedom struggle was not just a battle against British rule; it was also a defence of their land, culture, and autonomy. This period saw a heightened sense of regional identity and a refusal to be subsumed under a monolithic national narrative.

7. Post-Independence challenges and integration

The integration of North East India into the Indian Union post-1947 was a complex and often turbulent process. The region’s diverse ethnic landscape and history of resistance made it difficult to fully integrate into the new Indian state. Insurgencies in Nagaland and Mizoram reflected dissatisfaction with the terms of integration and the Union Government’s policies.

Gopinath Bordoloi’s efforts were crucial in ensuring a relatively smooth integration of Assam into India. His advocacy for Assamese rights and his role in managing the region’s affairs during partition and independence were instrumental in shaping the region’s post-independence trajectory.

In recent decades, there has been a growing recognition of the North East’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle. Statues, memorials, and academic research have increasingly focused on commemorating the sacrifices and struggles of North East India’s freedom fighters. These efforts aim to integrate their stories into the broader national narrative, ensuring that their contributions to India’s independence are recognized and remembered.

8. Cultural revival

The freedom struggle in the North East was not only a fight against colonial rule but also a cultural awakening. Movements emerged to preserve and promote indigenous languages, traditions, and art forms, reinforcing regional identities amidst colonial oppression. This cultural revival was as much about resisting British rule as it was about safeguarding and revitalizing the region’s rich heritage.

Women were central to this struggle, with figures like Kanaklata Barua and Rani Gaidinliu leading from the front. They challenged both colonial authority and traditional gender norms, paving the way for greater female participation in public life across the region.

9. Educational institutions spread modern ideas

Educational institutions in North East India, notably Cotton College in Guwahati (now Cotton University), were instrumental in the region’s participation in the freedom struggle. Established as centres of modern education, these institutions became hubs for the dissemination of nationalist ideas and political thought. They nurtured a new generation of leaders who would go on to play vital roles in the fight against British colonial rule.

During this period, the rise of regional literature also played a significant role in fuelling the independence movement. Newspapers and periodicals published in local languages became powerful instruments for spreading nationalist sentiments and mobilising the masses. These publications provided a platform for intellectuals and activists to communicate the ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance, making them central to the broader anti-colonial struggle in the North East.

The legacy of the freedom struggle in North East India profoundly impacts contemporary issues in the region. Ongoing debates about autonomy, cultural preservation, and political representation underscore the region’s complex relationship with the Indian state. These discussions reflect the enduring quest for recognition and respect for the North East’s unique identity and historical contributions.

The North East’s role in India’s freedom movement is marked by resilience, cultural revival, and political assertion. From early resistance against British rule to pivotal World War II battles and eventual integration into independent India, the region’s history highlights its significant role in the nation’s journey to freedom. As India celebrates its independence, it is essential to remember and honour the stories of the Northeast’s freedom fighters, ensuring their contributions are acknowledged as a crucial part of the national narrative.

Women's safety

Amid widespread protest against the murder and rape of an on-duty doctor in Kolkata , PM Modi called for publicising punishments for crimes against women.

“Need of hour is to widely publicise punishment for atrocities against women so that there is a fear of consequences,” said PM Modi in his Independence Day 2024 speech on Thursday.

75,000 more medical seats in five years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced the creation of 75,000 more medical seats in the next five years. The PM expressed concern over the difficulties faced by Indian medical students who often end up going abroad to pursue their education. PM Modi said that many middle-class children spend “lakhs and crores” on medical education abroad.

"In the last 10 years we have increased the medical seats to nearly 1 lakh," Modi said. “We have decided, 75,000 new seats will be created in the medical line in the next five years,” he added.

Missed PM Modi's Independence Day 2024 speech? What he said on Bangladesh Hindus, other issues | 10 takeaways

Independence day 2024: narendra modi became the prime minister to hoist the tricolour for the third highest time. it was his longest speech at 98 minutes..

Independence Day 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, August 15, broke the record of his immediate predecessor Manmohan Singh by hoisting the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive time on Independence Day.

With this, Narendra Modi has become the prime minister to hoist the Tricolour for the third highest time. The record lies with first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru who did the honours 17 times from 1947 to 1964.

Speaking on the 78th Independence Day of India, Modi touched upon a number of domestic and international issues, including the current Bangladesh political crisis.

It was Modi's longest Independence Day speech at 98 minutes . Modi's Independence Day speeches average at 82 minutes — longer than any other prime minister in India's history.

His longest I-day speech before Thursday was 96 minutes in 2016 while his shortest speech was in 2017 when he spoke for around 56 minutes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi speech: Key takeaways

  • PM Narendra Modi hoped that the situation in Bangladesh will improve soon even as he expressed concern over the safety of Hindus and other minorities in that country. Modi said India will always be supportive of Bangladesh's growth and development. “As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope that the situation there gets normal at the earliest. The concerns of 140 crore countrymen to ensure the safety of Hindus and minorities there - India always wants our neighbouring countries to walk the path of prosperity and peace. We are committed to peace...In the days to come, we will continue to wish well for Bangladesh in its 'Vikas Yatra' because we think about the welfare of humankind.”
  • PM Narendra Modi made an unequivocal pitch for a uniform civil code in the country, asserting that a "secular civil code" in place of the existing "communal" one is the need of the hour.
  • Modi said there is a need to widely publicise punishments given for atrocities against women, so that there is a fear of consequence. The PM added that said his government has worked on a "women-led development model," but he was still concerned over incidents of rape and violence against women. The Prime Minister said there is anger among people against such incidents. "We have worked on a women-led development model. Whether it is innovation, employment, entrepreneurship, in every sector women are marching ahead," Modi said.
  • Modi also pushed for major reforms in the farm sector on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day celebrations and emphasised efforts to make the lives of farmers in the country better. The PM commended farmers for choosing organic farming and added that the country's farmers can make India the organic food basket of the world as it moves towards its goal of Viksit Bharat.
  • Modi said 75,000 more medical seats will be created in the next five years. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, Modi said even today, children, mostly belonging to the middle class, are going abroad for medical education. They spend “lakhs and crores” on medical education abroad, he said.
  • The PM said many global companies want to invest in India and asked the state governments to compete among themselves to attract them. Modi said most of the people he met in his third term wanted to invest in India.
  • Modi, in an indirect attack on the opposition, said while the nation is moving forward with a unified resolution, some people cannot "tolerate" the progress. "We are moving forward with the same resolution, but there are some people who cannot tolerate progress or think of India's progress unless it benefits them. They want anarchy. The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people," the Prime Minister said.
  • Narendra Modi slammed the culture of patronage and “termite” of corruption, saying that some people glorify it but he will persevere against them. Modi expressed concern over corruption and its glorification, describing it as a major issue for the society. “I know I have to pay a price for this battle, my prestige may be at stake, but national interests are more important than personal prestige,” he said.
  • Asserting that India has the ability to stage large-scale global events, Modi said the country is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to host the Olympics in 2036. Along with India, several other nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey are positioning themselves as strong contenders to host the sporting spectacle. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to decide the host only next year after holding its elections.
  • Modi emphasised bringing “one nation and one election” in the country adding that these days every welfare scheme is linked to elections. “Continuous elections in the country are causing headraces in development. Welfare schemes in the country are now linked to the elections,” the PM said.

Independence Day 2024 Highlights: India is celebrating its 78th Independence Day today.

Independence Day Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hoisted the national flag for the 11th time in a row from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day.

In his address on the country's 78th Independence Day, PM Modi said it is a day to pay tribute to the countless people who made sacrifices and struggled for the country's freedom.

"The country is indebted to them," PM said.

The theme of this year's Independence Day is "Viksit Bharat@ 2047", underscoring the government's goal of making India a developed country by 2047, which would mark 100 years of Independence. The focus is on government policy and programme announcements that generate headlines.

Multi-layer security is in place across Delhi with the cops implementing  advanced CCTV analytics around the Red Fort.

On the eve of Independence Day, several rallies were taken out across the country under the Centre's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign.

  • People need to understand that a few people with negative mindset conspiring to create imbalance in country.
  • Challenges are there within country and outside; as we become more powerful, challenges will increase.
  • India will always be well-wisher of Bangladesh's progress.
  • We hope situation normalises in Bangladesh soon; Indians want that security of Hindus, minorities there is ensured.
  • India's development not detrimental for anyone; we are country of the 'Buddh', 'yudh' (war) is not our path.
  • Nepotism, casteism harming society; have to get rid of these from politics.
  • Frequent elections creating obstacles in country's progress.Request everyone to come together to achieve resolve of 'one nation, one election'.
  • One very big reform, which our freedom fighters and forefathers dreamt of must be realised - of a common civil code for every Indian.
  • Every Indian must be same and equal in the eyes of the law. We must all be governed by the same laws.
  • Till today - for 75 years, we have been living with a communal civil code, now we need a truly secular civil code - where every Indian is same and is treated the same.
  • As India rises globally, there are several challenges surrounding it. I see it and understand these challenges very well.
  • I want to appeal to the global community that India's rise is never a threat to any nation.
  • Never in its millenia-old history has India ever been a threat to the world.
  • Never has India taken the world to uncertainty or war.
  • India has only defended itself when it has faced a threat.
  • India is a nation of peace - of Buddha, of compassion.
  • I want to appeal to the world that when India rises, the world rises, when India grows, the world grows.
  • India is an inclusive nation and considers the world 'one family'.
  • I urge the world to understand India, its culture, its history, its journey.
  • But should challenges continue for India, the world must know that India knows how to stand up to a challenge and overcome it.
  • It always has, and always will.
  • Challenging a challenge is in India's nature and DNA.
  • We will come together as a nation and triumph. We will stand up, face the challenge, we will continue to work, continue to grow. That is our resolve. A resolve of 1.4 billion people in unison
  • Urge states to draft clear policies to attract new investors, assure them about good governance, law and order.

  • India's farmers can make country organic food basket of world, we will work towards it.
  • Need of hour is to widely publicise punishment for atrocities against women so that there is fear of consequences.
  • India rolled out 5G at very fast pace; have not stopped at that and are working on 6G tech on mission mode.
  • Need to give up old habits, come forward with clear policies for investors at a time when world is keen to invest in India.
  • We want to make India global hub for green hydrogen, it has potential for generating 'green jobs'.
  • It is India's dream that Olympics 2036 is held in the country, we are preparing for that.
  • India has an ambitious renewable energy target and is taking this very seriously.
  • India is the only G20 nation that has ensured that the pledge made at the Paris Climate Summit is fulfilled - and that too before time. India is the only nation that has achieved its climate target.
  • Today, I can assure the nation and the world that India will aim for 500 GW clean energy by 2030.
  • We all must ensure that the Indian Standard becomes the International Standard. We must work with the motto of 'Desing in India, Design for the world'.
  • India must lead the world in creativity and gaming. Not by playing games, but in developing gaming products that are exported to the world.
  • Today, India is seeing participation and leadership of women in every field - be it entrepreneurs, start-ups, space sector, armed forces, sports - women are leading on every front, but we also see and hear cases that are grave and saddening.
  • Today, I want to address the issue from the Red Fort. We see heinous crimes against women. We are concerned for the safety of our mothers, sisters and daughters.
  • This is a grave issue and we all must think and act with responsibility.
  • Fear needs to be in the mind of such demons who attack, assault and violate women - they should know that the death penalty (phansi) is what they will face for their crime.
  • The media should also prominently highlight such cases so that these demons are shamed.
  • We prioritised justice over punishment in new criminal laws.
  • Middle class gives a lot to nation; expects quality life; will be our endeavour to ensure minimum government interference.
  • Reforms in governance have to be pushed to realise goal of 2047; delivery system in governance has to be strengthened.
  • India's contribution in global growth has increased; country's exports have gone up.
  • Space sector is essential for making India powerful nation, it is becoming vibrant and we are giving strength to this sector.
  • For third term in government, only message is to serve everyone, every family and take nation to newer heights of development.
  • Today the entire country is 'Tiranga', every home is 'Tiranga' - When the national flag flies high in every home, we see that people come forward, rise above religion, caste, creed and colour for the 'Tiranga', then it reassures that the country is moving in the right direction.
  • Unity, mutual respect for each other and the underlying feeling of 'mam-a-bhaav' (kindly feeling) for one another is what guides our nation forward.
  • Hundreds of start-ups have come up in space sector; private satellites, rockets are being launched.
  • We have taken big steps towards modernising infrastructure, also given priority to ease of living.
  • Country's youth does not want to go slow, this is our golden era.
  • Earlier, people used to plead with govt for amenities, now they get them at doorstep.
  • Path of reforms chosen by us has become blueprint for growth and not just for debate clubs.
  • Today, India's northeast is becoming known for its scale of infrastructure development.
  • We are working to fulfil the aspirations of our middle-class population. We are taking steps to ensure that govt's dependence, interference and burden on the middle-class reduces, and I am confident that when we achieve a Viksit Bharat by 2047, we will achieve this as well.
  • Because of the significant reforms in India's banking sector, today, India stands among the world's best nations in terms of a strong banking system - And when banks are strong, then the foundation of the nation is strong. The Economy is strong.
  • For decades, India and its citizens faced a 'Mai-baap' system of governance - where people had to run pillar to post, requesting for what is their right.
  • But today, due to reforms across the board, we see an India where every Indian is getting a bank account, every home is getting electricity and water connections, when piped gas and gas cylinders are reaching every doorstep, govt services are sped up and services and conveniences are reaching the citizen's doorstep. Their banking needs are at their fingertips.
  • We are keeping global best practices and standard operating procedures as well as forging ahead with digitisation to ensure we lead the world in every field. We are implementing these best practices in every field, reforming every sector, every field.
  • Jal Jeevan Mission has reached 15 crore beneficiaries.
  • People's suggestions for Viksit Bharat include governance reforms, speedy justice delivery system, promoting traditional medicines.
  • 'Viksit Bharat 2047' are not mere words, they are reflection of resolve and dreams of 140 crore people.
  • When we take steps and plan the future, the words 'Mera Bharat Mahan' is the soul behind every initiative, every effort.
  • When I see electricity is reaching every home of every fellow Indians, when water connections are being given to every family and every home.
  • When I see the effort by all of my fellow countrymen to come out and achieve a Swachh Bharat - I understand that all this is because people are inspired to take India forward.
  • Today, those who brave and courageous and hardworking are working to take the nation forward - Be it our soldiers, our farmers, our youth. I salute them all.
  • In recent times, due to some calamities, many people have lost their lives. I want to assure their families that in this hour of grief and difficulty, the nation stands with them at every step.
  • Country indebted to freedom fighters, it is a day to remember their sacrifices.
  • 40 crore Indians had come together in the early part of the 20th century and threw out the most oppressive nation from their rule over us. They were 40 crore - today we are 140 crore.
  • If 40 crore could achieve the daunting task back in the day, then today, 140 crore can ensure that the nation surges ahead. Many in those 40 crore gave up their lives to achieve the goal of freedom and independence, today 140 crore have to live for the nation and take it forward.
  • So many of you have come forward and shared your ideas on how we can ensure a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047, when India celebrates completion of 100 years of Independence.
  • Many of you suggested how skill development should be prioritised, so many suggested ways how India can become a manufacturing hub to ensure development.
  • Several suggestions came about taking our traditional forms of medication and healthcare like Ayurveda to the world. Lots of suggestions came that the judicial processes needs significant reforms.

75th Independence Day 2022

(Introduction) :

(History of Independence Day):

(Why do we celebrate Independence Day?):

(The significance of Independence Day):

(Independence Day Essay 10 lines):

(Conclusion):

A dry spell of ten years ended on Thursday as this year's Independence Day celebrations at New Delhi's Red Fort saw Rahul Gandhi joining the ceremony as the Leader of the Opposition. Sporting a white kurta suit, the Wayanad MP was seen sitting with the Indian Olympics contingent which included medallists Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh, and PR Sreejesh among others.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019, the post of the Leader of the Opposition remained vacant as none of the opposition parties could fill up the required number of seats to hold the constitutional post.

India achieved independence on 15th August 1947, it is the day India became free from British rule for almost 200 years and after a continuous struggle by our freedom fighters.

On this day, the national flag was unfurled and hoisted on Red Fort Delhi by our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then we are celebrating Independence Day every year in every government department, school, and college.

So, today on this special day let’s take the pledge and make a promise to ourselves that we will always protect our country, by maintaining brotherhood, helping everyone, and educating ourselves.

At last, I again wish you all a happy Independence Day and hope together we can build a wonderful nation.
