How to Create a Homework Binder

Keeping all homework assignments in one place makes it much easier to find everything when it comes time to do your homework. You can simply open your binder, pull out the worksheets for the day, and get started. Dividing the binder into subjects also helps organize everything as you complete assignments. With a homework binder, you’ll never forget about or lose your homework again. Keep reading to find out how you can create your own homework binder to keep your worksheets organised

Organizing a Homework Binder

You might also consider a binder that zips shut, so you can’t lose any papers.
Determine if you want a large 3-ring binder or if you want thinner binders to use for each subject.

Using dividers with pockets can make it even easier to store your assignments.

Step 3 Put new assignments at the front of your binder.

Alternatively, keep each new assignment at the front of each subject so it is near your notes.

Step 4 Move completed assignments to each subject section.

For example, when you finish a math worksheet, put it in the math section of your binder.
You can also place returned homework assignments in the subject section.
Consider if you want to store your assignments in chronological order so you can easily page through them later on.

Using a Homework Binder

Step 1 Put only homework assignments in the binder.

At the end of the school day, make sure you put the binder in your backpack before you leave for the day.

Step 3 Put assignments in the binder right away.

Remember to keep all unfinished assignments in the front of the binder or in the front pocket so they are separated from work you’ve already completed.

I really love how you set up your folders! Thanks for the great ideas. Where did you get those amazing green folders??

How do you get your labels to stay on? I've tried them on poly folders and they seem to fall off.

Courtney- I've found the smooth plastic folders work the best! The ones that have a lot of texture stick, but the ends can peel up. Also, make sure you buy the GOOD labels! :) Hope that helps!

I did the same for my 1st graders one year, but mine said, "to be LEFT at home," "to be sent RIGHT back." They were placed on the LEFT and RIGHT sides of the folder.

What are brads in folders?

Brads in folders are the little metal clips inside of a 2 pocket folder.

You place the paper(s) onto the fasteners, then open the brads so that the pointed ends are facing away from one another (like a butterfly’s wigs when they are open).

Now you have locked in your materials into the two-pocket folder easily!

How to make your own folder:

Two 2-pocket folders , one WITH brads and one WITHOUT brads (make sure to check the back to school sales too in the fall!)
Three-hole punch
Labels to label the pockets (see below for some I already have made up for you!)

1. Take the folder that does NOT have the brads, and turn it inside out so the pockets are on the outside.

2. Three-hole punch the open EDGE (not the folded edge)

3. Insert the holes onto the brads in your other folder and close up.

4. Affix your labels and you are set to go!

I like to add a name on the front cover, and the description of the pockets on the inside.

Super simple, right? Of course since the middle folder is not closed up, you may see a gap, but it really should not matter. If it drives you insane, you can always take a few extra minutes to glue it shut though.

I did try to place more than one folder and when I did, the middle pockets were not able to be opened freely since they were attached at the brads.

You could certainly try some different combinations, but I found just one folder to work perfectly.

How can you use your new multi folder?

Different subjects in a self-contained classroom; examples – reading, math, science, social studies
Specials teachers can ask students to bring their specials folder; examples – PE, Art, Music, Computer Science
Writing folder for writer’s workshop; examples – brainstorming, rough draft, editing, final copy
Homework folders; examples – work to be left home, work to be reviewed, graded work, homework
Math story problem processes; examples – keywords are underlined, relevant numbers are circled, a picture is drawn, final sentence is written and final answer circled
Book reports; examples – book chosen, main ideas list, rough draft and editing, final copy and illustrated cover

Below, I have some labels and you are even able to customize the student names on the front folder label!

I have included labels for a writing folder to move the pages along in the writing process or for a multi-subject folder to keep those papers that are started, but not quite finished.

Just have students place their paper into the correct folder and then grab it again the next day when you are ready to start your lesson!

How to set up homework folders for students.

Homework has always been something that I’ve created at the last minute for the students. In the past, it usually ended up being an activity or reading passage that we didn’t get to finish for the day. But then, I wanted to more intentional about my homework. And I wanted to make sure I gave my kids an opportunity to spiral review their prior standards. Click to read this blog post about spiraling your homework! So, here we go. Let’s talk about setting up homework folders for elementary students!

Homework Folders for Primary Students

All students will get a homework folder. Homework folders should be the plastic material, which is a little more expensive, but if students are using them throughout the year, these hold up best.

(Affiliate Link: Amazon Folders ) I suggest going with the plastic covered ones. They tend to stick around and stay in one piece the longest. I also suggest the three prongs on the inside, so that you can hole punch the homework and attach it to the middle. If you don’t have the three prongs, no worries. You can just slide the homework behind your assignment sheet.

Start with a three-prong folder. Plastic will work best because it’ll keep a little better than the paper folders.

Homework organization for elementary students.

On the left side of the folder, place the assignment list for the entire week.

On the right side of the folder, place the book the child is reading for the week. They have 15 minutes of nightly reading assigned to them, so that’ll be the easiest way to keep up with the book. The picture on the right shows me pointing to the area that parents sign to keep the children accountable for their reading.

How to set up a homework folder with a FREE folder labels.

Take the Math, Reading, Writing, and Language/Foundations and place them into the three prongs. Front/back is suggested to save paper!

This is a glimpse at one week of second grade with the assignment sheet (which is on the left of your folder), plus the four sheets of work (which either goes into the prongs or into the right side).

Having a neat, organized binder will set you up for success throughout the school year. Check out the tips below to learn the best, most effective way to organize your binder for school. Say goodbye to messy loose papers and lost homework assignments for good!

Buy dividers.

Dividers will help you categorize your notes and materials.

Clearly label each divider with whatever subject/class you want.

Tips from our Readers

Avoid using the pocket in the front of your binder. It may become the main place you store things, which will mess up any organizing you’ve tried to do. Consider closing it with tape.
In the beginning of the year, put your class schedule in the plastic pocket on the front of your binder. That way you can check it easily.
Go through your binder once a month and get rid of anything you no longer need.

Homework Calendar

When I was a student, I personally loved using a homework calendar. It helped me see the bigger picture and take all of my obligations into account. You can use the homework calendar template as is or you can edit it to suit your needs. Add your list of assignments below. Add each assignment to the calendar on the due date. This is a blank calendar that you can use for any month.

If you select the Excel version, then there is a dropdown list to select the subject, priority, and status. You can edit the list of subjects under the “subjects” tab. Each subject is automatically assigned a color code . All assignments that are due the next day are colored red. Assignments due that week are orange and those that are due that month are yellow.

This homework tracker can track your homework assignments, the subjects, due dates, and the status of each assignment. There is a dropdown list to select the subject and each subject will be marked with a different color. To change the list of subjects, go to the subject tab and list each subject. The priority can be either urgent, high, normal, or low. The status is either “to do” or “done”. You can change the priority or the status in the tabs.

Assignment Tracker

This Excel spreadsheet keeps track of assignments, who is responsible for each, and when each assignment is due. The color of each assignment changes according to the due date. When the assignment is due it will turn yellow. You can also open this spreadsheet on Google Sheets.

What is a homework planner?

This is a planner to track your homework and assignments to ensure that you prepare and submit everything on time. An assignment planner can keep track of all your assignments and is a great tool for priority management. However, if you have other obligations such as tests, social and family gatherings, etc, it might be better to prepare a planner that takes all your obligations into account. If you have a family gathering the day before a test, then you will know you will need to start studying one day earlier than you would have. If you don’t keep track of deadlines and everything you need to do, you might find yourself stressed or too late to get everything done. Planning will take the stress out of school and help you be more productive and organized.

How to use an assignment tracker?

Learning how to manage your time is an essential skill that will be needed later on in life as well. Time management is something that sets efficient people apart from those who do not manage their time well and get little done or even fall apart when stressed. Our job as parents is to give our children the skills and tools to manage their time well and get things done, even when they have a lot on their plate.

Start helping your kids to get organized when they are young. Help them write their assignments in their planner. Help them organize their time and schedule. The younger they are, the less they have on their plate. This is the time to help them acquire the skills they will need when they are older and obligations start to become more overwhelming. Remind your kids to review their planner regularly until it becomes a habit. By the time they are older, in high school or college, they will be able to manage their time efficiently.

It isn’t enough to write assignments and homework in a planner when you receive them. In order for a planner to be efficient, you will need to review it regularly. Start a daily habit where you check your homework calendar daily to see what needs to be done. This should be part of your child’s daily routine. If it isn’t feasible to check daily, then it should happen at least once or twice a week. If that doesn’t work, then try setting reminders on your phone.

How to make a homework planner?

Choose whether you want a weekly assignment planner or a daily or monthly planner. Whatever works for you. Scan the templates on this page and see which one you think will be the most helpful. Student Binder Supplies

Before we jump into the binder tour, here are a few of the items you’ll need to put together your student binder:

A 3-Ring Binder (I like this one and this one .)
Colorful Tab Dividers (I like these ones with pockets and these ones without .)
White Tab Dividers
3 Ring Binder 3 Hole Punch (I have this one .)
I like to use a label maker + clear tape to label my divider tabs.
Printer- I have this kind . I prefer to print my binder printables at home, but of course you could always send them off to your local print shop or office supply store to be printed as well.

The first thing that any binder needs to have is a pretty cover, and this binder is no exception! I made it bright and colorful with plenty of room for the owner’s name and/or contact information. I printed my cover out on white card stock just to make it a little sturdier.

Class Schedule

Next, I was sure to include a class schedule. You can keep track of what class is happening when, where, and with whom with this simple printable!

Student Binder: Planning

I then divided the binder into a few sections to keep everything neat and organized. The first section is planning, of course!

Goal Setting Sheet

You know I never create a binder without including a goals page! I am kind of obsessive about goals because I really think that they work!

Whether you’re a student or not, it never hurts to write out a few of the things you’d like to accomplish over the next year. I’ve also left room to write out some action steps you can take to get yourself closer to your goals.

Monthly Calendars- Dated and Undated

Everyone– students and otherwise– can always use a monthly calendar. This one includes July 2023-December 2024 for over a full year of pretty planning! And if you’re thinking even further ahead than that, I’ve included undated calendar pages so that you can create a calendar for any year you want!

Two-Page Weekly Planner

Another printable that everyone could use is this two-page weekly planner. Each day is broken down by hour to make it easy to use time blocking or just keep a close eye on your schedule. There is even room at the bottom to set some goals for the week and make notes.

Daily Planning Printable with Time Blocking

Daily Routines Printable

The final printable in the “planning” section is a daily routines printable. Sometimes it’s helpful to clarify which items need to happen each morning (like packing a lunch or filling your backpack), afternoon (like finishing homework or doing chores), and evening (like picking out clothes for the next day or planning the next day’s schedule). This little printable can help you do all of those things!

Everyone probably won’t need all of these different printables for planning their time, but I wanted to make sure I provided a bunch of different options so each person could choose the printable or printables that would work best for them!

Student Binder: Tracking

There are sooooooo many details to keep track of when you’re in school, and the next section of the binder is devoted to just that.

Assignment Schedule + Exam Schedule

I know I was always overwhelmed on the first day of class when I would get my syllabus from each teacher and immediately be bombarded by assignments and test dates. The next two printables– an assignment schedule and an exam schedule– will help organize those things so you never miss a deadline.

Reading Log Printable

If there is one thing I’m thanking myself for as an adult, it is that I was an avid reader from an early age. I know I’m a former English teacher, so this is expected from me, but reading is so, so, so important! This reading log makes it easy to keep track of your minutes/pages read.

Student Binder: Subject Sections

I divided up the next section of the binder into the different subject areas and included the same few printables in each subject tab.

Grade Tracking Printable

First, I included a grade tracker. It’s never fun to get to the end of the quarter or semester and be surprised by your grade, so this printable will help you keep track of all grades along the way so you know exactly what to expect.

There is a column to list each grade, and then one to keep a running total on the far right. Print one off for each class and get tracking!

Next I added a simple-but-pretty notes page so you can keep all of your class notes nice and organized. I would print out a bunch of these at a time to have them handy any time I need to take notes in class, make a list, or just get some thoughts down on paper!

In past years I had several requests from moms of boys for binder printables that weren’t quite so pink! As an online college student, it can be quite difficult at times to stay organized and on track. I ended up downloading the Assignment Schedule, Exam Schedule, and the Grade Tracker. I found your blog not too long ago while looking for some organization tips and subscribed right away. I was so excited to see the information about the student binder in my email today. My oldest daughter and I both have ADHD and organization/follow through is the area we struggle with the most. I used the Exam and Project printouts back in Spring semester and it was super helpful! I ended up printing out enough for each of my classes and sticking them in sheet protectors at the front of each tab for each of my classes. I keep everything logged in my actual planner, but being able to look at what I’ll be doing for the entire semester was great! My classes for Fall start this coming Monday so I’m in organization/prep mod and I immediately came back to your site to get some more printables! Wow that is absolutely beautiful! I love it! Makes me wish I was back in school again! LOL!! I have a question regarding your planners. I am new to planning and just getting ideas if I should go with a binder with all the beautiful printables, or one of those premade types? Or is there a way to work with both of them? You make such great printables and I would love to somehow incorporate them into a premade planner. What I don’t like about the binder type is that it’s so cumbersome because it doesn’t fold in half and takes up more room. So if you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi, Sandi! If your planner had the three rings in it, you could certainly add the printables to it. The new version of our Simplify printables are coming out in a few weeks, and they will include half sheets that fit in a small binder, so that would take up less space if that is the issue you’re having. How To Create The Ultimate Homework Station (So You’ll Never Have To Ask “Is Your Homework Done?” Ever Again)

How to create a Homework Station for kids

Homework can be the bane of the school year and can often be the source of much drama in the household. “Where is my notebook?” “Have you seen my backpack?” and of course the often-used “Is your homework done?!”

Instead of playing into the drama, why not make your home set-up a point of calm amongst the chaos, and set your children up for success by creating (or updating) an incredible homework station.

Teaching your kids how to keep themselves organized is such an important skill. Tasks such as time management, tidying workspaces, and project preparation will not only help them with school work, but also with life and the challenges it brings as they continue to learn and grow.

As organizers, we have used these tips to create homework stations for elementary school aged children onwards and they can easily be applied to families looking to refresh their existing systems for kids of any age.

And big bonus – your kids will love their new work space so much, they may actually be excited to do their homework!

FIND THE SPACE

First things first, you’ll need to find a room or space in your home that works for your child. Depending on their age and how much assistance they require, this spot could be in a communal room (think kitchen or family room) or at a desk in their own room.

The ultimate goal is to get them working in a proper set-up with a table and chair instead of working from their lap – this way they establish good habits, can properly work on their handwriting and have room to spread out all their materials.

Wall Organization

Hang up a cork, magnetic or pin board for your kids to put papers, reminders and a calendar. This is a space that should be within reach of their desk so they can easily add/remove important items on a regular basis. It can also give them a chance to decorate and personalize their space – hopefully inspiring them to actually use it!

DESK ORGANIZATION

Having supplies within reach of the workspace is key to their productivity (there needn’t be twelve trips around the house looking for the tools they need to complete each project!).

A version of these supply caddies can also be made for the road as there are often times that your child won’t be home when it comes time for homework (ie. at a sibling’s after-school sporting event!). Capitalize on that travel and waiting time with a to-go bag of their most needed supplies. We especially love this portable storage one .

Make cleanup easier on everyone by using labels on your supply containers/caddy. This will help teach your children how to maintain their space and hopefully put an end to the continuing cycle of them asking where to put things when they are cleaning up.

As your kids get older, homework will often require the use of technology, which means cord and charging chaos! Keep their space tidy from the cord clutter by using some of these ingenious products and hacks to help cables stay neat and handy for when it’s time to plug in and charge.

ESTABLISH GOOD HABITS

Time Management

Give them the tools to manage their own time by keeping a clock or timer at their workspace . Setting time limits for each subject can help them stay on track and is a life skill that will bode them well in life after school.

If you haven’t heard of the Time Timer before, it is an ingenious tool that visually shows your child how much time they have left for a certain task. It is easy for them to set themselves, and they don’t need to know how to read a clock in order to understand the concept of time diminishing.

Subject Management

Help keep your child’s different subjects organized with color-coded file folders (1) — for instance, green for science, blue for english, etc. — so they can keep their notes organized on their desk and in their book bag.

A simple file folder organizer can help keep their most important documents at arm’s reach ( this one (2) even has some extra storage underneath!). If there’s not enough room on your desk for one, try this nifty cascade folder (3) that you can hang on the wall when working, and collapse and bring with you on-the-go!

In/Out Parent Bins

There’s always a plethora of school paperwork and updates that need to get safely into your hands. Consider setting up some in and out bins where your kids can drop off any papers that need to be signed or seen by a parent. You can then go through them each night, and put any that need to be returned to school in the “out” bin, ready for them to pick up in the morning and pack in their backpacks. With a little practice, this can be an extremely effective method that can be used all the way through high school!

It is vital for older children to start learning how to manage their own calendar. Whether it’s a desktop planner , or a large dry-erase calendar that can hang on the wall, it’s a great way for them to visually see what tests and assignments are coming up, so they can manage their time accordingly.

Form a Routine

Now you’ve got their work space expertly organized, help your child form a routine of when they do their homework. It could be as soon as they come home after a snack, after ½ an hour of “down” time or after dinner. Whatever you decide, help them stick to their routine for the first few weeks by setting a timer or providing gentle guidance. Hopefully with their new homework station in place, they’ll feel a real sense of ownership and be excited to get down to work!

After their homework is complete, consider helping them put a routine in place that will help make the morning rush less hectic. It could be as simple as establishing a nightly backpack check ensuring that all the books and papers needed for the next day are all packed away. Or having them place their packed backpack in a designated space (preferably near the door!) so there isn’t a mad scramble to find it in the morning.

Fun Craft – How to Make a Back to School Homework Folder

School will be starting soon or in some places already in session. The kids may be eager to get started but don’t send them to school with an ordinary homework folder. Craft together to make a personalized and fun back to school homework folder.

Back to school homework folder

Rub on designs
Adhesive letters
Ribbon in two colors
Mini Bowdabra with hair bow tool and ruler attachment
Bowdabra bow wire

Instructions:

Begin by gathering all the materials you need to make this back-to-school craft. Next, glue ribbon strands onto the front of the folder. Tentatively, place pieces of the rub-on designs onto the front of the folder. Then, follow the instructions and begin to place the designs onto the folder.

Now, add adhesive lettering. Once, the folder is ready you can add a bow.

To make the bow place the Hair Bow Tool & Ruler onto the Mini Bowdabra. Cut 18″ of Bowdabra Bow Wire and fold it in half. Place the wire into the Mini Bowdabra.

Cut strips of ribbon, dovetail the ends, and place them into the Mini Bowdabra.

Place the end of the second ribbon into the Mini Bowdabra.

Fold the ribbon at the 1.5″ mark to make your first loop.

Continue to make loops and then trim the ribbon from the spool.

Scrunch down with the Mini Bowdabra Wand.

Thread the two wire ends through the loop.

Pull the wire tightly while the bow is still in the Bowdabra.

Remove the bow from the Mini Bowdabra and bring the wire around to the back of the bow and knot it.

Fluff the bow. Use the Bowdabra Bow Wire to tie the bow to the homework folder. Spiral the remaining Bow Wire with a pencil to create fun ringlets.

The Ultimate Writing Folder

What are brads in folders?

Brads in folders are the little metal clips inside of a 2 pocket folder.

You place the paper(s) onto the fasteners, then open the brads so that the pointed ends are facing away from one another (like a butterfly’s wigs when they are open).

Now you have locked in your materials into the two-pocket folder easily!

How to make your own folder:

You will need:

Two 2-pocket folders , one WITH brads and one WITHOUT brads (make sure to check the back to school sales too in the fall!)
Three-hole punch
Labels to label the pockets (see below for some I already have made up for you!)

1. Take the folder that does NOT have the brads, and turn it inside out so the pockets are on the outside.

2. Three-hole punch the open EDGE (not the folded edge)

3. Insert the holes onto the brads in your other folder and close up.

4. Affix your labels and you are set to go!

I like to add a name on the front cover, and the description of the pockets on the inside.

I did try to place more than one folder and when I did, the middle pockets were not able to be opened freely since they were attached at the brads.

You could certainly try some different combinations, but I found just one folder to work perfectly.

How can you use your new multi folder?

Different subjects in a self-contained classroom; examples – reading, math, science, social studies
Specials teachers can ask students to bring their specials folder; examples – PE, Art, Music, Computer Science
Writing folder for writer’s workshop; examples – brainstorming, rough draft, editing, final copy
Homework folders; examples – work to be left home, work to be reviewed, graded work, homework
Math story problem processes; examples – keywords are underlined, relevant numbers are circled, a picture is drawn, final sentence is written and final answer circled
Book reports; examples – book chosen, main ideas list, rough draft and editing, final copy and illustrated cover

Below, I have some labels which match my completed Jungle Theme Classroom Resources and you are even able to customize the student names on the front folder label!

I have included labels for a writing folder to move the pages along in the writing process or for a multi-subject folder to keep those papers that are started, but not quite finished.

Just have students place their paper into the correct folder and then grab it again the next day when you are ready to start your lesson!

I have a question about the directions. In them, you state to hole punch the OPEN edge of the non-brad folder,. However, the pictures clearly show the FOLDED edge is hole punched. Other than aesthetics, does it matter? I don’t want to mess up my folders.
