There are several ways to determine whether you have a damaged presentation. You can try to open the file on another computer that has PowerPoint installed to see whether the unexpected behavior occurs on the other computer. You can try to create a new file in PowerPoint and see whether the unexpected behavior occurs with the new file. This section describes how to use existing presentations and how to create a new file in PowerPoint to determine whether the presentations have the same behavior.

Method 1: Open an existing presentation

• In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button .
• Select a different presentation, and then select Open.

If this presentation opens and seems to be undamaged, go to Method 3 in this section. Otherwise, go to Method 2 to create a new presentation.

Method 2: Create a new presentation

Step 1: create the presentation.

• In PowerPoint 2007, select Installed Templates , and then select Introducing PowerPoint 2007 .
• Select Create . This process creates a presentation that is based on the template.
• In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Save .
• Type a name for the presentation, and then select Save .
• Exit PowerPoint.

Step 2: Open the new presentation

• In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Open .
• Select the new presentation, and then select Open .

If you cannot open or save the new presentation, go to Method 3.

If you cannot create a new presentation, PowerPoint may be damaged and a repair should be initiated. (See Method 3, Part 2 below.)

Method 3: General troubleshooting

Windows 10, windows 8.1, windows 8, and windows 7.

This procedure allows your computer to restart without startup add-ons. For a clean restart, follow these steps:

Sign in to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

Select Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should type the password or provide confirmation.

On the General tab, select the Selective startup option, and then clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

On the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then select Disable all.

This step lets Microsoft services continue to run. After you do a clean restart, you should check Office performance and then resume usual startup.

This procedure will cause the Office program to check for issues and repair itself.

Select the Start button and type Control Panel.

Open the Control Panel, go to Uninstall or change a program (or Add or Remove Programs ).

Scroll through the list of programs and find your version of Microsoft Office. Right-select and then select Change .

We suggest that you do the online repair option.

Methods to try if you cannot open a presentation

Method 1: drag the presentation to the powerpoint program file icon, windows 10, windows 8.1, and windows 8.

Right-click the Windows icon on the Taskbar, and then select Run.

Type one of the following depending on your version of PowerPoint:

Select the Enter key.

Locate the Powerpnt.exe icon in Windows Explorer.

Drag the damaged presentation icon from one window to the Powerpnt.exe icon in the other window.

PowerPoint will try to open the presentation. If PowerPoint does not open the presentation, go to Method 2.

Select Start, and then select Documents. Or select Start and then search for Windows Explorer.

If you have the MSI version of PowerPoint 2013 installed, type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 64 bit) or %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 32 bit), and then press Enter.

If you have PowerPoint 2013 Select-to-Run installed, type C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 64 bit) or C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 32 bit), and then press Enter.

If you have the MSI version of PowerPoint 2016 installed, type %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\office16, and then press Enter.

If you have PowerPoint 2016 Select-to-Run installed, type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (PowerPoint 2016 64 bit) or %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (PowerPoint 2016 32 bit), and then press Enter.

Method 2: Try to insert slides into a blank presentation

Step 1: create a blank presentation.

• In PowerPoint 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click New .
• Select Blank Presentation, and then select Create.

This process creates a blank title slide. You can delete this slide later after you re-create the presentation.

Step 2: Insert the damaged presentation as slides

• On the Home tab, select the arrow next to New slides in the Slides group, and then select Reuse Slides.
• In the Reuse Slides task pane, select Browse. Select the damaged presentation, and then select Open.
• Select Insert Slide for each slide in the damaged presentation.
• In PowerPoint 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save .
• Type a new name for the presentation, and then select Save.

Step 3: Apply the damaged presentation as a template

If the presentation does not look the way that you expect after you try these steps, try to apply the damaged presentation as a template. To do this, follow these steps:

On the File menu, select Save as.

• In PowerPoint 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save as .

This will make a backup copy of the restored presentation that you can use in case the damaged presentation damages this new presentation.

On the Design tab, select More in the Themes group, and then select Browse for Themes.

Select the damaged presentation, and then select Apply. The slide master of the damaged presentation replaces the new slide master.

If you start to experience unexpected behavior after you follow these steps, the template may have damaged the presentation. In this case, use the backup copy to re-create the master slide.

If the backup copy of the new presentation exhibits the same damage or strange behavior as the original presentation, go to Method 3.

Method 3: Try to open the temporary file version of the presentation

When you edit a presentation, PowerPoint creates a temporary copy of the file. This temporary file is named PPT ####.tmp.

The placeholder #### represents a random four-digit number.

This temporary file may be located in the same folder as the location to which the presentation is saved. Or it may be located in the temporary file folder.

Rename the file, and then try to open the file in PowerPoint

Right-select the file, and then select Rename.

Change the old file-name extension from .tmp to .pptx so that the file name resembles the following file name:

PPT ####.pptx

Start PowerPoint.

On the File menu, select Open.

Browse to the folder that contains the renamed file.

Try to open the file in PowerPoint.

More than one file may correspond to the temporary file that was created the last time that you saved the presentation. In this case, you may have to open each file to see whether one is the temporary copy of the presentation.

If there are no temporary files, or if the temporary files display the same kind of damage or strange behavior, go to Method 4.

Method 4: Make a copy of the damaged presentation

• Right-select the presentation, and then select Copy.
• In the Windows Explorer window, right-select in a blank space, and then select Paste.

If you cannot copy the file, the file may be damaged, or the file may reside on a damaged part of the computer's hard disk. In this case, go to Method 5.

If you can copy the file, try to open the copy of the damaged presentation in PowerPoint. If you cannot open the copy of the damaged presentation, try to repeat Method 1 through Method 5 in the "Methods to try if you cannot open a presentation" section below by using the copy of the damaged presentation.

Method 5: Run Error Checking on the hard disk drive

• Exit all open programs.
• Right-click the Start menu and select File Explorer .
• Right-select the hard disk drive that contains the damaged presentation.
• Select Properties, and then select the Tools tab.
• In Error-checking, select Check Now.
• Select the check box Automatically fix file system errors.
• Select the check box Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
• Select Start.
• Select Start, and then select Computer.
• Right-click the hard disk drive that contains the damaged presentation.
• Select to select the Automatically fix file system errors check box.
• Select to select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Error checking may verify that the presentation is cross-linked and attempt to repair the presentation. However, this is not a guarantee that PowerPoint will be able to read the presentation.

Methods to try if you can open a damaged presentation

Method 1: try to apply the damaged presentation as a template.

• In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select New .
• Select Blank Presentation , and then select Create . This process creates a blank title slide. (You can delete this slide after you re-create the presentation.)

Step 2: Insert the damaged presentation into the blank presentation

• On the Home tab, select the arrow next to New slides in the Slides group, and then select Reuse Slides .
• In the Reuse Slides task pane, select Browse .
• Select the damaged presentation, and then select Open .
• Select the Microsoft Office button, and then select Save .

If the presentation does not look the way that you expect it to look after you try follow these steps, try to apply the damaged presentation as a template. To do this, follow these steps:

• On the File menu, select Save as .
• In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Save as .

Type a new name for the presentation, and then select Save .

On the Design tab, select More in the Themes group, and then select Browse for Themes .

Select the damaged presentation, and then select Apply . The slide master of the damaged presentation replaces the new slide master.

If the backup copy of the new presentation still displays damage or strange behavior, go to Method 2.

Method 2: Transfer the slides from the damaged presentation to a blank presentation

• In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Open .
• Locate the damaged presentation, and then select Open .
• Select Blank Presentation , and then select Create . This process creates a blank title slide.

Step 2: Copy slides from the damaged presentation to the new presentation

On the View tab, select Slide Sorter . If you receive error messages when you switch views, try to use Outline view.

Select a slide that you want to copy. On the Home tab, select Copy .

If you want to copy more than one slide at a time, hold down the Shift key, and then select each slide that you want to copy.

Switch to the new presentation. To do this, on the Window tab, select Switch Window in the View group, and then select the new presentation that you created in step 1.

On the View tab, select Slide Sorter .

On the Home tab, select Paste .

Repeat steps 2a through 2f until the whole presentation is transferred.

In some cases, one damaged slide may cause a problem for the whole presentation. If you notice unexpected behavior in the new presentation after you copy a slide to the presentation, that slide is likely to be damaged. Re-create the slide, or copy sections of the slide to a new slide.

If the new presentation shows damage or strange behavior, go to method 3.

Method 3: Save the presentation as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file

If there is damage throughout the presentation, the only option to recover the presentation may be to save the presentation as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file. If this method is successful, it recovers only the text that appears in Outline view.

Step 1: Save the presentation in the RTF file format

• Open the presentation.
• In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , select Save As , and then select Other Formats .
• In the Save as type list, select Outline/RTF(*.rtf) .
• In the File Name box, type the name that you want to use, select a location in which to save the presentation, and then select Save .
• Close the presentation.

Any graphics, tables, or other text in the original presentation will not be saved in the .rtf file.

Step 2: Open the .rtf file in PowerPoint

• On the File menu, select Open .
• In the Files of type list, select All Outlines or All Files .
• Select the .rtf file that you saved in step 1d, and then select Open .

This procedure will re-create the presentation based on the original presentation's outline view.

Cannot Open PowerPoint Presentations in Windows 10

When the issue occurred, the following error message is displayed:

How To Fix “Sorry, PowerPoint can’t read” in Windows 10 / 11

At times we might have come across this error that says the PowerPoint file cant read and wondered what is causing the issue. This issue is generally seen under the following circumstances:

• The PowerPoint file is downloaded from an unknown source from the internet
• The PowerPoint file looks unsecured to the system
• The PowerPoint file is corrupt.

In this article, let us discuss various ways to fix the “Sorry, PowerPoint can’t read” issue in Windows 10. Here we see various issues to fix the first two issues mentioned above. However, if the file is corrupt, these Fixes won’t work.

Fix 1: Unblock the PPT file from Properties

Step 1: Right-click on the PowerPoint File you need to open and Choose Properties

Step 2: In the Properties window,

• Make sure you are in the General tab
• Under the Security section, Tick on the Unblock option as shown below
• Click on OK
• Finally, Press OK

Try if this works and check if you will be able to open the PowerPoint File. If not, try the below fix.

Fix 2: Disable Protected View from Trust Centre Settings

Step 1: Open a Microsoft PowerPoint and click on the File menu option as shown below.

Step 2: In the window that opens, click on Options from the left-hand side menu.

Step 3: From the PowerPoint Options window that opens,

• Choose Trust Center from the left-hand side
• Click on Trust Center Settings

Step 4: From the Trust Center Settings window that opens,

• Choose Protected View from the left-hand side menu
• Untick the option Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet
• Untick the option Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations
• Untick the option Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments

Step 5: – Now, Click on Save in Next window which is till open.

In the right side , Scroll down and click on Delete Cached files

Step 6: – Click on Delete cached files

Step 7: Click on OK in PowerPoint Options

Step 8: Try opening the PowerPoint File that had issues.

Check if this resolves the issue. If not, try the below fix.

Fix 3: Temporarily Disable your Antivirus

Some times, when the PPT is downloaded from unknown, not so secure sources, the antivirus program in the system blocks it. If you have got the PPT from a trusted friend of yours or a trusted site, disable the antivirus program. Try opening the PPT file and enable the antivirus program back.

Check if this fix works, if not, try the next fix.

Fix 4 – Repair Microsoft Office

1 – Press Windows key and R key together from keyboard to open RUN command box

Type appwiz.cpl in it and click OK

2 -Now, Locate your microsoft office from the list. Right click and select change .

3 -Now, click Quick repair and then click OK .

Wait for it to repair microsoft office. Now, try again.

Fix 5: Update the PowerPoint Application

Step 2: In the window that opens,

• Click on Account from the left-hand side menu.
• Click on Update Options
• Choose Update Now

Step 3: Restart your PC and try to open the file and check if the issue has fixed. If not, this might mean that the PPT is corrupted and cannot be opened.

Howdy friends, in the previous article we have shared on how to fix Microsoft word can’t be opened , after that many users asked that our PowerPoint not working do you have any solution?

So, in this article, we are sharing how to solve the problem of Microsoft PowerPoint Won’t Open On Windows 7, 8, and 10.

So, without wasting time let’s get started on the solution…

Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the most popular and most used presentation programs today.

Since the initial versions in 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2020 to the most recent version of Office 365, Microsoft PowerPoint still dominates the market.

This program is widely used by business people, educators, students, students, offices, trainers, and others.

The number of computers and laptops that use the Windows operating system makes Microsoft PowerPoint more reliable than other office programs.

Even so, sometimes some Microsoft PowerPoint users also complain about programs that are not responding to problematic Add-Ins.

Causes of Microsoft PowerPoint Won’t Open, Not Responding, Hang

• A program crash occurred. It is possible that the Microsoft PowerPoint you are using has a problem, either because of an imperfect installation or because of a virus/malware.
• Program error after Windows update. In some cases, there are some users who experience problems opening Microsoft Office programs (including Microsoft PowerPoint) after the Windows update . It may be that there are components that are no longer supported or incomplete updates.
• The program has not been activated. Microsoft Office programs that have not been activated (trial period) will definitely have a lot of problems. Usually, the program cannot be used for typing, many features are disabled, and others.
• The existence of a program component that is missing/corrupted. Another possibility, there is a Microsoft PowerPoint program component that is missing/corrupted. This is what sometimes makes Microsoft PowerPoint always not respond.
• The add-ins have a problem. Additional add-ins also make it easier for users to create presentations. However, if the add-ins have a problem, it usually makes the program run less optimally.

Fixed: Microsoft PowerPoint Cannot be Opened, Not Responding

To solve problems with Microsoft PowerPoint, there are a few tips you can do. Starting from restarting the computer , updating the program, repairing the program, to reinstalling the program.

I did these tips on Windows 10 (Microsoft PowerPoint 2019). If you are still using Windows 7 or 8, feel free to adjust.

1. Restart Your Computer / Laptop

The first simple thing you can do is restart the computer/laptop you are using. This method is usually very helpful in solving problems when opening programs/applications, whether because it hangs, is slow, to applications that are not responding.

2. Ensure All Windows Services (System Configuration) Are Running

Windows presents a System Configuration feature to view and ensure all services are running properly.

Disable some services actually does not interfere with system performance and programs with a record of knowing which services are most needed and which are not really needed.

Its function is actually very helpful for users in reducing CPU resource usage .

However, for those of you who feel that you do not understand the real use of the Service, it is better to activate all ( Enable All ) so that there are no programs with problems/errors when running.

• Right-click on the Windows Start menu , and select Run.
• Type MSConfig and click OK to enter System Configuration.
• After entering System Configuration, select the Services tab.
• Click Enable All to ensure all Service functions are running.
• Click Apply and OK.

After making sure all the services are running, restart your computer and try running Microsoft PowerPoint again.

3. Update PowerPoint to the Latest Version

Microsoft as the owner and developer of Microsoft Office continues to make improvements and add features.

For that, you can update the program for fixes ( bugs ), security, and stability. You can see the availability of updates through Microsoft PowerPoint’s Office Update feature.

Before updating, make sure your internet connection is smooth.

• Open the Microsoft PowerPoint program that you are using.
• Click File »Accounts, see the Office Updates section.
• Click Update Options »Update Now ( Check for and apply updates for office ).
• Please wait for Checking for updates until the update process is complete.

After updating Microsoft PowerPoint, please restart your computer/laptop.

Note: You can update options if it is still possible to open Microsoft PowerPoint. If the program really crashes and doesn’t open at all, it’s better to try the next tip.

4. Repair Microsoft Office

Next, you can also repair/repair Microsoft Office (including Microsoft PowerPoint ). Microsoft provides two options for repairing, Quick Repair (without internet) and Online Repair (using an internet connection).

My advice, it’s better to do the repair online to be more optimal in solving all problems.

• Click Start » Select the Settings icon.
• Select Apps »Apps & features.
• Find and select the Microsoft Office program, and select Modify.
• There are two repair options, Quick Repair (without internet) and Online Repair (using an internet connection). Choose the one you want.
• If you have an internet connection, my suggestion is to use Online Repair so that the repair process is better and maximized.
• Follow the repair instructions until the Microsoft Office repair process is successful.

After doing the repair, try restarting your computer/laptop. After that, you just try to open Microsoft PowerPoint again.

5. Update Windows

Sometimes damage also occurs to the system so that the performance of the built-in programs in it is also problematic.

For that, try doing a Windows update for system repairs, security, and installed programs.

• Click Start » and select the Settings icon.
• Select Update & Security »Windows Update .
• Click Check for updates to see the latest Windows update version.
• If available, you can update.
• After updating, you can restart your laptop/computer.

6. Reinstall Microsoft PowerPoint

If all the above tips don’t solve the problem, try reinstalling Microsoft PowerPoint.

Download the latest Microsoft Office and make sure it supports the version of Windows you are using.

• Find and select the Microsoft Office program, and select Uninstall.
• Confirm with Uninstall and follow the Uninstall program instructions to complete.

After removing the program, clean the cache files and Windows registry until they are clean.

Restart the computer and then install again Microsoft Office (including Microsoft PowerPoint) that you have.

7. Use An Alternative Presentation Program

If you feel like you’re on a tangle and want to finish a presentation task quickly. In the meantime, use other presentation programs like Google Slides, WPS Office, Prezi, LibreOffice, and the like.

You can use the program for free and it has full support for the Microsoft PowerPoint format.

If you want to use Google Slides, you can access it online via Google Drive or via the google.com/slides/about/ site.

Make sure to log in using the Google account that you have.

FAQ’s on Microsoft Powerpoint Not Responding

Why can’t I open a PPT file on a laptop?

You need to determine what  error  message appears when the PPT file is opened. Try opening the file using Google Slides, can you or not? If not, it means the file is corrupted / the download is not complete.

Why can’t I open the PPTX file on an Android phone?

What application do you use to open the PPTX file? Does the application you are using support the PPTX format or not? Try using WPS Office to open it. Or send it to a friend and ask your friend if it can be opened or not.

Why can’t I edit PowerPoint files?

The possibilities are very many, it could be that the file is still in  read-only mode. You need to save it again so that it can be edited. Or it could be that the Microsoft PowerPoint trial period has expired so you can’t edit it.

4 Ways to Fix Microsoft PowerPoint Not Opening on Mac

• Let’s say you have used some font styles for your presentation. You must ensure they are compatible with Mac and Windows.
• Open Disk Utility > click on First Aid > Run > click on Confirm.
• You may create a new user account temporarily and open PowerPoint in that profile.

Basic Fixes

• Check file compatibility: The file type of your presentation should be compatible with PowerPoint that supports PPTX, PPSX or ODP.
• Force quit and relaunch PowerPoint: This will give the app a fresh start. Click the Apple logo > Force Quit > PowerPoint > Force Quit.
• Update or reinstall PowerPoint: Installing the latest version will remove any bugs or glitches from the app.

Step 4:  Select the file and drag it to the Recycle Bin .

Fix 3: Run First Aid in Disk Utility

If your Mac is experiencing storage errors after you’ve removed several apps, you can fix those errors using Disk Utility. These errors might be causing issues with the PowerPoint app, and they can also affect your Mac’s overall performance. Follow these steps.

Step 1:  Open Disk Utility and click on First Aid in the Disk Utility window.

Step 2:  Click on Run to launch First Aid.

Step 3:  Click on Continue to confirm your action.

After Disk Utility finishes running First Aid, relaunch the PowerPoint app.

Fix 4: Create and Switch to a New User Account

If none of the options work on your Mac, create a new user account temporarily. Switching to a new user account is also a good option to fix PowerPoint not opening on your Mac. Follow these steps.

Step 2: Click on Add User > enter your Mac password to confirm this action.

Step 3: Enter all the details and click on Create Account .

Step 4: Click the Info icon next to the user account name.
