How to use MyUnisa to submit your Unisa assignments online

unisa assignment 50

Are you an enrolled student at the University of South Africa (Unisa) who is having trouble submitting your assignments? Assignments for Unisa can be turned in online through the myUnisa dashboard, in a box designated for that purpose, by mail to the University of South Africa, or by courier.

Assignments at UNISA help you master the material and be ready for exams while also assisting instructors in determining your understanding of the subject.

They are necessary and required, and you cannot take the exam unless you have finished the corresponding tasks.

It is important to always keep a copy of your assignment in case the university does not receive an assignment and you are requested to re-submit a copy.

Watch this video which shows you how to prepare, format, complete & submit Unisa assignments or read the guide below.

Assignments help lecturers to see whether you understand the module, and they help you to learn the work and prepare for exams. They’re critical and compulsory – you won’t be allowed to write the examination unless you’ve completed the relevant assignments.

Assignments

NO, they are not, but is strongly advised that you attempt and submit all of the assignments. Research done at Unisa has shown that students who submit assignments has a far better chance of success because:
• assignments ‘force' students to work throughout the year, which in turn makes it possible to identify problems early;
• students build up a year mark, which might prove to be valuable if something goes wrong in the exams.
• the course, especially this one, may prove be to difficult to ‘cram' in the two weeks before exams.

Will the assignments contribute towards the final mark?
According to UNISA regulations, the assignments may count a small percentage of the final mark. In this course, our assignments can contribute a maximum of 15% to the final mark. The reason why it cannot be more than 15% is that we have no guarantee that the work submitted is the student's own work. Also, we allow students to work in groups, which implies that the work submitted is not entirely the own work of the student who submitted the work. However, we acknowledge the fact that most students work throughout the year and recognise your effort by making the assignments count. In most other courses at UNISA, assignments do NOT count towards the final mark, but simply serve as an entrance requirement for the examinations.

The maximum of 15% is allowed by letting each assignment count 5% of the final mark.

Nothing really, students will not be disadvantaged if they do not submit assignments. For this certificate course, ALL students have automatic entrance to the examination. If you have not submitted any assignments, you will simply have not year mark, and as a result, your examination mark will be the final mark. On the other hand, if you don't submit all the assignments, for example, If you submit only 1 of the 3 assignments, your year mark will only make up 5% of your final mark. We have a policy in this course, not to disadvantage students through their year mark, but use it to help them. For example, if your year mark is average (say 60%) and you gets 80% in the exams, your year mark will be disregarded.

If you have Internet access, please introduce yourself to the rest of the class on the discussion forum under the "Hello..."-thread. The reason for this assignment is twofold. First, it ensures that you have proper access to our discussion forum and knows how to use it. The second reason for introducing yourself is to get to know the rest of your classmates. Experience has told us that students benefit a lot by communication with their fellow students! If you have Internet access, please make sure that you become part of this group.

There are THREE formal assignments for each module (four in total). The first two assignments are comprised of multiple choice questions. All assignments must be submitted ON or BEFORE a specified due date for marking. NO late assignments will be marked. Due to the tight time constraints of fitting everything into a semester, we will NOT be able to consider late assignments for marking. If you cannot make a due date, remember that it will not be counted against you - you can only benefit by submitting it in time.

(Prepare for submission)

• WORKING FROM PAPER
Many people find it easier to work from paper than to work from a monitor. Web-based students might therefore find it easier to first print out the assignment before working on it.

You can use a copy of our DUMMY ANSWER SHEET, (found at the end of this document) to assist you in preparing your answers for submission. For each question, select only the BEST possible answer, and write down the number of that answer next to the question number eg. (1.) 4. Complete all questions on your dummy answer sheet. If you intent to submit your answers electronically, keep your dummy answer sheet ready.

If you are a correspondence student without Internet access, use one of the computerised mark-reading sheet that you have received with your registration papers, and carefully complete the mark-reading sheet from your dummy answer sheet.

(Prepare for submission)

Assignment 3 is a practical exercise based on the entire course. For this exercise, you will have to install (if you have not yet) and use the XML Spy editor that accompanied your textbook. You are expected to do the exercises, PRINT them and submit them through SOL or through postal mail. Only printouts of your practical work will be considered.

Please remember that submission must be ON or BEFORE the due date. If there is a consistent problem with the Unisa-servers two days prior to the due date, we automatically extend the due date for a week (Also the section on Possible Problems). Remember that the automatic extension of one assignment does NOT imply extension of the follow-up assignments, you must therefore continue with your study programme as initially planned and not adjust your schedule according to the new date.

Using this method, the assignment must be admitted through the SOL server (https://sol.unisa.ac.za). Do NOT e-mail your assignment to the lecturers please since it cannot be marked by the computer program which marks the incoming assignments.

Put your assignment in a Unisa envelope and post it to Unisa. (Use the services and procedures booklet, that you have received with your registration papers if you have any queries in this regard.

All multiple choice assignments are marked electronically as a batch on a predetermined date. The system does NOT mark assignments as they are submitted, but all are marked at the same time as a single batch. This means if your assignment is not part of the batch it will not be considered for marking. The Assignment Department publishes the results of the marked assignment on SOL or send it by postal mail to correspondence students.

Assignment 3 is marked by hand. Our response will be sent back to you as soon as possible. Remember, since this assignment is due a few weeks before the examination, it will NOT be possible to extend the submission date, as this will not allow us enough time to assess and return your work.

Because the first two assignments are marked by batch processing, we cannot arrange for the marking of individual assignments. It is therefore very important that you submit your assignment ON or BEFORE the due. Please DO NOT ask for extension to submit an assignment. Because we cannot arrange for individual assignments to be marked, we also cannot grant extension. If you miss an assignment, please start working on the next assignment. The date of marking is usually set THREE days after the due date.

As explained in the previous section, we can unfortunately also not accept any late submissions for Assignment 3. Please be on time to be eligible for improving your term mark.

Can students work together in groups?
Absolutely! You may work together in groups, as long as each person submits his or her own work. The electronic submission does not make room for group submission, therefore each person in the group has to submit an assignment.

How are grades calculated in Gradebook?

Gradebook automatically calculates a course grade based on the number of points scored out of the total points submitted (i.e., a running grade). Ungraded items will not be included in the course grade calculation, so the course grade will not necessarily reflect the student's true score. To include ungraded items in the course grade calculation, you need to enter a 0 (zero) for those items.

To exclude a gradebook item from the course grade, you can edit the gradebook item and deselect Include this item in course grade calculations . A crossed-out calculator icon will appear next to the grade item title to indicate that it is not included in the course grade calculation.

Extra credit points are excluded from the total possible points available, but included in student grade calculations for points awarded. See How does extra credit work in Gradebook? for more information on extra credit gradebook items and categories.

Note: Students can't see their grades for an item unless you select Release this item to students when editing the gradebook item.

Example of a non-weighted gradebook calculation:

If your gradebook does not have weighted categories, the calculation is relatively simple. The Course Grade is the total number of points awarded divided by the total points possible. Let's look at an example of this below.

Assignment is worth 50 points.

Assignment is worth 50 points.

In this example, the Assignment has a total points possible of 50 points.

Only Assignment has been graded.

Only Assignments has been graded.

Notice the scores for each student.

  • student01 has a course grade of 70%. This grade is based on 35 out of 50 points on Assignment.
  • student02 has a course grade of 80%. This grade is based on 40 out of 50 points on Assignment.
  • student03  has a course grade of 90%. This grade is based on 45 out of 50 points on Assignment.

The Homework and Quiz are not calculated in the course grade since they have not been assigned any scores.

Homework is worth 100 points.

Homework is worth 100 points.

Cumulative grades after Homework is graded.

Cumulative grades after Homework is graded.

Now, notice the updated course grades for each student. The scores for Assignment and Homework are added together, and then they are divided by the total possible points for those two items combined.

  • student01 has a course grade of 83.33%. This grade is based on the following calculation:  (35 + 90) / 150 = 83.33%
  • student02 has a course grade of 80%. This grade is based on the following calculation:  (40 + 80) / 150 = 80%
  • student03 has a course grade of 76.67%. This grade is based on the following calculation:  (45 + 70) / 150 = 76.67%

Not all Quizzes have been submitted.

Not all Quizzes have been submitted.

Only the grades that have been entered are calculated. Student01 has not submitted a quiz, so her grade is still (90 + 35) / 150 or 83.33%.

The other students have submitted quizzes. Quizzes are worth 25 points. so their scores are:

  • student02 (40 + 80 + 24) / 175 = 82.29%
  • student03 (45 + 70 + 25) / 175 = 80%

The student did not submit the quiz.

The student did not submit the quiz.

Since student01 did not turn in the quiz and was assigned a zero on that item by the instructor, now the grade is (90 + 35) / 175 = 71.43%

Example of a weighted gradebook calculation:

On the other hand, if you have weighted categories in your gradebook, the calculation is a little more complex. First, all of the items within each category are averaged, taking the total points awarded within the category, and dividing that by the total possible points within the category. Then, all category averages are multiplied by the category weighting and added together to determine the final score.

The example below shows the grade for an individual student in a weighted gradebook with three categories: Assignments (50% of course grade), Discussions (20% of course grade), and Quizzes (30% of course grade).

Student01 course grade with ungraded items.

Student01 course grade with ungraded items.

In this example, student01 has not received a score for Assignment 3, Quiz 2, or Quiz 3. Those three items and their associated possible points are automatically excluded from the grade calculation. Therefore, the grade is calculated as follows:

Average within each category = total of awarded points divided by total possible points

  • Assignments = (80 + 90) / 200 = 0.85 or 85%
  • Discussions = (10 + 10 +10) / 30 = 1 or 100%
  • Quizzes = 13 / 20 = 0.65 or 65%

Weighted course grade = category averages multiplied by category weighting and added together

  • (0.85 x 50) + (1 x 20) + (0.65 x 30) = 82%

Student01 with no ungraded items.

Demostudent01 with no ungraded items.

Now, demostudent01 has received grades for all items, including a zero for Quiz 3 which the student failed to submit. The grade is recalculated as follows:

  • Assignments = (80 + 90 + 100) / 300 = 0.90 or 90%
  • Quizzes = (13 + 15 + 0) / 60 = 0.46 or 46%
  • (0.90 x 50) + (1 x 20) + (0.46 x 30) = 79%

Setting all ungraded items to zero.

Setting all ungraded items to zero.

If you would like to enter zeros for all ungraded items in the course, select the down arrow in the Course Grade column and then select the Set Zero Score for Empty Cells option to update all items at once.

Note: This option should be used with caution, as it will enter a zero for any items not yet scored. It is best used at the end of the term after all submitted work has been graded.

Get ready for assigned seats: Southwest Airlines ushers in big changes

unisa assignment 50

It's the end of an era at Southwest Airlines.

After more than 50 years , the airline is getting rid of its open seating policy.

In a press release Thursday, the Dallas-based airline acknowledged "preferences have evolved with more customers taking longer flights where a seat assignment is preferred." The airline hopes moving to assigned seats and revamping its boarding process will broaden Southwest's appeal to both new and existing customers, four out of five who prefer assigned seats, according to the airline, which did not give an exact date for the switch. More details are expected in late September.

Assigned seating is just one is one several major operational changes in store. Southwest also plans to introduce premium seating options on all flights and introduce red-eye flights.

"While specific cabin layout details are still in design, Southwest expects roughly one-third of seats across the fleet to offer extended legroom, in line with that offered by industry peers on narrowbody aircraft," the airline said.

Southwest already unveiled a cabin refresh earlier this year and is in the middle of upgrading its fleet with changes announced in 2022, including in-seat USB charging and stronger Wi-Fi .

Booking for the airline's new red-eye flights opened Thursday. The first overnight flights will land next Valentine's Day, in five initial nonstop markets:

  • Las Vegas to Baltimore
  • Las Vegas to Orlando
  • Los Angeles to Baltimore
  • Los Angeles to Nashville
  • Phoenix to Baltimore

The airline plans to eventually roll out red-eye flights to other markets and offer 24-hour operational capabilities.

The sweeping changes aim to add value for both customers and investors.

"Our goal is to restore industry-leading margins and historical levels of shareholder returns through our comprehensive plan to deliver transformational commercial initiatives, improved operational efficiency, and capital allocation discipline," Southwest's President, CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Bob Jordan said in a separate press release, announcing second quarter earnings . Operating revenues were up 4.5% year-over-year and hit an all-time quarterly high of $7.4 billion.

The airline's earnings have been under pressure in recent quarters, partly because of delays in plane deliveries from Boeing, which have impacted revenue and worsened cost pressures. Southwest is also facing pricing pressure as industry-wide overcapacity has dampened domestic airfares.

DALLAS (AP) — Goodbye, cattle call.

Southwest Airlines said Thursday that it plans to drop the open-boarding system it has used for more than 50 years and will start assigning passengers to seats, just like all the other big airlines.

The airline said it has been studying seating options , running tests and surveying customers. Southwest discovered that preferences have changed over the years and the vast majority of travelers now want to know where they are sitting before they get to the airport.

Southwest’s unusual boarding process started as a fast way to load passengers and limit the time that planes and crews spend sitting idly on the ground, not making money . It helped the airline operate more efficiently and even squeeze a few more flights into the daily schedule.

It was one reason that Southwest alone among U.S. airlines remained profitable every year until the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s how it works: Instead of being assigned a seat when they buy a ticket, Southwest customers check in exactly 24 hours before departure to secure their spots in boarding lines. In the beginning, the first 30 to check in were put in the coveted “A” boarding group, guaranteeing them a window or aisle seat. Dawdlers landed in “B,” which was still OK, or “C,” which would often result in a middle seat.

Image

The system became less democratic over time as Southwest let people pay extra to guarantee a spot near the front of the line. Despite that, many Southwest loyalists still love open seating. The airline thinks they will adapt.

“I know there are going to be customers who say, ‘I want to stay with open seating.’ It’s a minority,” Southwest CEO Robert Jordan told CNBC, “but we had the same thing when we switched from plastic boarding passes. We had the same thing when we took peanuts out of the cabin. I’m convinced we can win them over.”

The airline said surveys showed that 80% of its customers — and 86% of “potential” customers — want an assigned seat. Jordan said open seating was the top reason that travelers cited for choosing another airline over Southwest.

Some Southwest passengers reacted with sadness and disappointment to news that open seating is going away.

“Hearing that announcement today, I was like, no, this is my favorite part of Southwest,” said Lindsey Magness, who works in college athletics in Oklahoma City.

Magness said that with open seating, she can try for a window seat or, depending on her mood, an aisle. And assigned seating doesn’t always work either. Magness said American Airlines seated her away from her husband on their honeymoon trip earlier this summer.

Brandon Bowser of Odenton, Maryland, said he flies on different airlines based on which one has the best deal, but he has found Southwest’s open boarding to be faster and less complicated than other airlines.

“The convenience that comes with being able to pick your own seat is what sets Southwest apart and makes them sort of a preferred airline,” he said. “A lot of my friends swear by Southwest, that’s all they will fly, and they are completely irate about this decision.”

At Chicago Midway airport, Kimberly King was happy to learn of the change. She was at a check-in kiosk with her four children for a flight home to California.

”I used to fly United a lot and I liked the assigned seats, especially with kids, kind of expecting and knowing where we were going to be,” King said. “The only reason really why I continue to fly Southwest is for the free bags.”

Southwest still lets passengers check two bags for free. It’s been a centerpiece of the airline’s advertising campaigns for years. CEO Jordan said Southwest has no plans to end bags-fly-free “at this point.”

There are drawbacks to Southwest boarding. It’s hard to get a good spot in line without paying an extra fee. Southwest executives said 60% of passengers check in the first 30 seconds. Those who miss the rush fear there won’t be room in the overhead bins for their carry-on bag. Late boarders can struggle to see an open seat anywhere, and start roaming up and down the aisle — Southwest calls them “spinners.”

There are a number of tricks that passengers use to game the system.

Some take advantage of early boarding for people who need extra time. Others ignore the age limit (6 or under) for children in families that are allowed to board right after the “A” group. Once on the plane, some passengers hold choice seats for mates who are far behind them in line.

Photos appear occasionally on social media of an unusually large number of people in wheelchairs at Southwest gates. They get to board early.

“It’s certainly one of the things that anger people even if it doesn’t have a material impact on them,” said Brett Snyder, a travel agent and author of the Cranky Flier blog. “In some cases those are people who have absolutely legitimate reasons. In other cases, it’s the ‘Jetway Jesus’ phenomenon.”

That’s a reference to recoveries so miraculous that the disability causing the person to need a wheelchair to reach the gate is cured during flight, and they walk off the plane like everybody else.

Snyder doubts that fans of open seating will abandon Southwest.

“Those people will still fly Southwest,” he said. “They may grumble about it, but there’s no one else they can go to that has open seating.”

In addition to the boarding change, Southwest also plans to convert about one-third of the seats on its planes to premium seating with more legroom, matching a practice that is standard among other large U.S. carriers.

The airline’s newest schedule also includes a few redeye flights — a first for Southwest.

The overnight flights will start in mid-February on nonstop routes including Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando; Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville; and Phoenix to Baltimore. More routes will be added over time, the airline said.

The changes come as Southwest is under pressure from Elliott Investment Management . The hedge fund argues that the airline lags rivals in financial performance and has failed to change with the times. It wants to replace Jordan and Chairman Gary Kelly.

Southwest also faces increased scrutiny from the Federal Aviation Administration after a series of worrisome flights, including one that dove within 400 feet of the ocean off Hawaii, two that flew at extremely low altitudes while still miles from landing at airports in Oklahoma and Florida, and another that was discovered to have rudder-area damage after an unusual “Dutch roll” wiggle during a flight.

Southwest announced the seating move and other changes on the same day that both it and American Airlines reported a steep drop in second-quarter profit despite higher revenue. Airlines are struggling with higher costs and reduced pricing power, especially on flights within the United States, as the industry adds flights faster than the growth in travel demand.

Southwest, based in Dallas, said its second-quarter profit fell 46% from a year earlier, to $367 million, as higher costs for labor, fuel and other expenses outstripped an increase in revenue. The results met Wall Street expectations.

American Airlines also reported a 46% drop in profit, to $717 million. CEO Robert Isom said the airline was held back by a sales strategy that it is now rolling back and by an oversupply of domestic flights.

American said its earnings per share in the third quarter will be break-even, well below Wall Street’s expectation of 48 cents per share. American also cut its forecast of full-year earnings to between 70 cents and $1.30 per share, down from a previous prediction of $2.25 to $3.25 per share.

Shares of the leading U.S. airlines rose Thursday. Southwest Airlines Co. gained 5.5% and American Airlines Group Inc., based in Fort Worth, Texas, rose 4%. Delta, United, Alaska and JetBlue also gained.

Associated Press writer Wyatte Grantham-Philips in New York and video journalist Teresa Crawford in Chicago contributed to this report.

This story has been updated to correct that King was interviewed at Chicago Midway airport, not O’Hare.

Southwest Airlines Will End Its Longstanding Open-Seating Policy

The airline said it was scrapping its trademark, 50-year tradition of offering open seating, where passengers choose seats once they have boarded the plane.

Passengers stand in line inside an airport terminal.

By Jenny Gross and Danielle Kaye

Southwest Airlines will start assigning seats to passengers, ending its longstanding policy of allowing passengers to pick their seats once they have boarded, the airline said on Thursday.

The new procedure will be implemented to increase revenue and in response to feedback from customers, 80 percent of whom report preferring an assigned seat, Southwest said.

“This is the right choice — at the right time — for our customers, our people and our shareholders,” said Bob Jordan, the president and chief executive of Southwest.

Even though the airline has been known for its unique seating model for more than 50 years, preferences have evolved, with more customers taking longer flights where they prefer a seat assignment, the statement said. The new policy was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal .

The changes bring Southwest, which for years has distinguished itself by offering low prices and a simple business approach, more in line with conventional airlines like American Airlines and United Airlines.

Southwest makes a little less than $1 billion from fees it charges for the ability to board early and “ancillary” services, Mr. Jordan said Thursday on a conference call with analysts to discuss the company’s second quarter results. The company expects that earnings from the move to assigned seating and offering seats with extra legroom will be “substantially north of that,” he said.

It's Enshrinement Week in the NFL, which means it's time to celebrate the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024. This year's class includes seven new members who will be inducted in a special ceremony this weekend in Canton, Ohio, following Thursday's annual Hall of Fame Game.

The Houston Astros did their part, honoring new Houston Texans Hall of Famer Andre Johnson (the first one in franchise history) before Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Minute Maid Park.

Johnson, who was joined by friend and famous rapper 50 Cent, came out on the field in Astros jerseys. After chatting with special advisor Reggie Jackson, among others, Johnson threw out the first pitch to another Hall of Famer, Houston legend Craig Biggio.

How special is this?!?! Andre Johnson, who’s about to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, throws out a ceremonial 1st pitch before tonight’s Astros game to Hall of Famer Craig Biggio. It wasn't a great toss by Johnson, bouncing wide of the plate. But hey, that's why he's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame instead of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The third overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft, Johnson was one of the best wide receivers in NFL history. He spent the first 12 seasons of his 14-year career with the Texans, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro nods, all with Houston.

One of the most dominant players of his era, Johnson led the NFL in catches twice, receiving yards twice and receiving yards per game three times. After his final two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans , he finished his career with over 14,000 receiving yards and 70 touchdown catches. The only thing missing from his resume is a Super Bowl ring.

Meanwhile, Biggio needs no introduction to Astros fans. He amassed over 3,000 hits in his 20-year career (all with Houston), making seven All-Star teams and winning four Gold Gloves. Like Johnson, he's also missing a championship ring from his trophy room.

The duo embraced after Johnson's pitch before posing for pictures. Unfortunately, they didn't get to see the Astros win as the Pirates prevailed, 6-2.
