Some of the significant figures involved in this movie are; Kareena Kapoor, who acts as Pia, Aamir Khan, who stars as Rancho, Sharman Joshi, who acts as Raju, Omi Vaidya, who acts as Chatur, Boman Irani, who acts as ViruS, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi and Mona Singh as Mona (Pia’s sister). The film mainly revolves around three college engineering students; Rancho, Farhan, and Raju. Rancho is the son of a wealthy Indian man, while his colleagues, Farhan and Raju, hail from an average background.

The main idea demonstrated in the film is the essence of doing what we are ambitious about rather than people’s suggestions. This is evident in the character of Farhan, whose dream was to do wildlife photography but instead did engineering to honor his parents’ wishes. However, his academic performances are not amusing. The film also illustrates the importance of chasing excellence instead of success, evident in Rancho, whose passion is earning knowledge. Rancho criticizes the school’s antics because the engineering college believed in good grades and termed failure a direct ticket to poverty, resulting in clashes with the lectures and the college dean, Professor Viru (ViruS). Through the film, we get the idea of the need to be more creative and how to study well at the University instead of memorizing books. It is evident in Raju, who believes in rote learning to get good grades.

Additionally, the film demonstrates the impacts parents, lectures and peers pose on students through pressure for academic excellence. It raises several challenges facing students, especially in India and other Asian countries, by clearly showing the impact of rote learning, high parental expectations, teachers’ attitudes, and peer influences. For instance, Rancho witnesses the death of Lobo, a student, who commits suicide after missing a project deadline and denial to graduate by ViruS.

I like how Rancho demonstrates the need to pursue excellence instead of chasing success when he starts a new school for inventors and passes his learning ideology to other generations. The film also shows us the need to pursue what we have passion for instead of other people’s suggestions. It is evident among the three engineering students. Rancho always tops in his academic performance while his two friends lag. The importance of being creative is also impactfully brought out in the film; it is better to learn and understand instead of memorizing, both from personal and professional perspectives. It is evident from the movie that earning knowledge of how things work and applying those things to improve other peoples’ lives is vital. I also like how the film showcases the innovations in India, for example, the scooter-powered flour mill.

However, despite how good the film is, it has some weaknesses portrayed in different scenes. For example, pranks; the prank pulled on Chatur was molesting and terrible. It occurs when Rancho changes some of the words in a speech presented by Chatur. He ends up getting embarassed in front of the crowd. This act would tear up anyone’s self-confidence and push them to depression. Scenes of students drinking are present in the film. This wrongly impacts the student’s psychology and puts the engineering college in question. In addition, students do not find solutions to problems but commit suicide making in the wrong way to address challenges. Although necessity is the mother of invention, I think doing baby delivery with a suction pipe is not ethical, which may be disturbing for some viewers to watch.

We can see this in the film when Rancho explains about the invention of "zero" in their excursion despite the fact that the western world insists its discovery was made by a scholar in the mainstream culture. Also, the diverse nature of Indians is portrayed by the fact that we have up to 70% of them staying in villages and yet they contribute less than 30% of the nation's GDP. This is totally different from the developed countries where a huge percentage of economical contributions are brought about by the city dwellers.

Rancho illustrates key elements of personal growth like self-actualization, desire for discovery, need for increasing depth of faith, a sense of crystallizing experience and the most important of all, the sense of sense and object of reverence and deep respect as he demonstrates. But what is happening? Our school systems are so focused on methods and traditional things which are good for exams and communication standards, so that students who study sciences must do the same subjects as those who study art. All of these ridiculous restrictions make certain that our tastes and talents are suppressed and our decisions are made through other people. It's putting us into these categories and boxes and making it harder for people to truly understand who they are. This is crazy and it's one of the aspects of the movie that really resonated with me. It definitely made me reflect on my own experiences at secondary school. I went to one of the "best" schools in my area and everything was so competitive: to get the grades, to get the recognition, to gain the titles. I felt like I had this social obligation to do what was expected of me. But as a result, I never worked out properly who I was or what makes me happy. I was just doing what was necessary, what was right. But by deciding to come to the UK and start my new independence over here, I've finally done something for myself that's led me to feel so much happier and more content. Much like the "3 Idiots", our current school systems are failing to move forward to suit the needs of the individual. I believe that student-centered teaching should be adapted everywhere, where each student can choose the different subjects of their interests and likes, and even be much more creative. New, different styles of learning and new experiences, with the focus more on group cooperation and social responsibilities, must be developed and put into practice. And most importantly, all students must be given the ultimate freedom to develop and mature both academically and personally as well. Well, this may be a long process, but once we get there, I'm sure that learning will be so much more enjoyable and education will become something like a life journey of individual's exploration and creativity.

4.2. Encouraging creativity and critical thinking

After all, the education that is designed to provide knowledge mainly in the form of academic content, at least in the traditional education system. Everything is pre-decided for the students to learn in the syllabus, and students are encouraged to pass their examinations by the ability of regurgitation of the content in the academic study. People are in danger of losing personal knowledge and the ability to find out about the world on their own through the encouragement of the capability of thinking, analyzing, and understanding to the academic, and it can be defined as a lack of creativity and critical thinking. In the movie '3 Idiots', it provides a valuable example of higher education in the film. The principle which is standing out in the motion picture, that has signified a view of which is student-centered and both creative and critical thinking are encouraged and embedded with the academic study. The main character of the movie "Rancho" has shown the understanding of education in the field of knowledge itself, he didn't learn the knowledge by memorizing in the traditional way but through finding and reasoning.
