Can’t share audio during Google Meet presentation? How to fix

Presenting your screen or part of your screen is a fairly neat utility in Meet that can help you communicate ideas with the click of a button. If you are a teacher, then this will be your go-to tool to help your class follow along with your teaching pattern.

However, you might have noticed that while sharing a video feed is fairly easy during presentations, sharing audio is not. The attendees might be able to hear you, but they won’t get any audio from what you are presenting. Why does this happen? Let’s find out!

Why isn’t audio shared in Meet while presenting?

By default, Meet is set to share audio from your microphone no matter the meeting. This means that even if you decide to present your screen with content that has audio, Meet will only share audio from your Microphone unless the correct device has been selected in the Settings. Most PCs manufactured after 2013 have a nifty utility bundled along with their sound drivers called ‘Stereo Mix’.

Stereo Mix allows you to layer audio from different input sources into one single audio stream which can then be routed to any source. This will allow you to share audio from your presentation within Meet while also being able to use your microphone. Let’s take a look at how you can use this. 

Fix #1: Make sure you are not muted

The icon should turn white indicating that you are no longer muted.

Fix #2: Set up Stereo Mix

If you are still unable to share your presentation audio, then it’s time to set up Stereo Mix on your device. Follow the guide below to get started. 

1. Ensure that Stereo Mix is enabled

We will first need to enable Stereo Mix on your PC. If you have enabled Stereo Mix before and enabled it as a device then you can skip this guide and move to the next one. 

Stereo Mix has now been set up on your device and we are now ready to use it in Google Meet while presenting. 

2. Select Stereo Mix within Meet 

Join a Google Meet meeting as you normally would and then click on ‘Present now’ at the bottom of your screen. 

And that’s it! Your attendees should now be able to hear your presentation audio positively!

I am still unable to Share my audio

If you are still facing issues sharing your audio while presenting in Google Meet then there are a couple of things you should do:

• Restart your PC
• Ensure Microphone access is enabled for all apps in the Windows Settings. 
• Ensure no OEM software is blocking access to your microphone. 
• Use Chrome for the best results. 

If you still face issues, it might be time to drop in a support request to Google regarding the same. You should also try presenting audio from a different device to see if that works.

If this is the case, then it might be an issue specific to your device which will require further troubleshooting and in the worst case, could be an issue at the hardware level.

These issues usually appear the moment you launch the meeting, and people start arriving.

Cause of Google Meet Audio Not Working

There are many reasons you can encounter audio issues during a Google Meet session. These can include Google Meet audio settings, your own computer's audio drivers, or even problems with your microphone.

These issues can occur whether you're using a Windows machine, a Mac, iOS, or Android. In most cases, the troubleshooting tips below will help you resolve the problem, although the process to fix things like system settings or update drivers may differ from one system to the next.

How to Fix Google Meet Audio Not Working

The process to troubleshoot this issue includes validating which end the problem is occurring on and then having the person with the audio issues step through the process to fix it.

Before we get too far into this, and we mean this with all sincerity and no judgment, are you muted? One of the most common mistakes people make when joining Google Meet is keeping their microphone muted. Make sure your computer microphone is enabled or ensure your mobile device microphone is on . If the microphone icon with a slash across it is highlighted red in your Google Meet session, it means your microphone is on mute. Click the icon to unmute your microphone. If you are using an external microphone, check for any mute switch on the mic itself.

Before you get started troubleshooting your sound issues, begin with restarting your system first. If you're on a computer or laptop, make sure to reboot your Windows or your Mac system fully. If you're using a mobile device, restart your Android or your iOS device .

One tip to determine which user has audio issues in Google Meet is having everyone mute their microphone. Have each person unmute and speak, and all other participants write in the chatbox if they can hear them. One user will likely never hear any sound at all. That's the user who needs to fix their technical issues.

The best way to avoid Google Meet audio issues is by testing your microphone and your speakers before the meeting. If you're having microphone issues, then troubleshoot those microphone problems before the meeting.

There are unique steps to troubleshoot audio issues with your Android device or fix sound issues with your iOS device .

Make sure your correct microphone is selected. In Google Meet, you can do this by opening Google Meet settings, selecting Audio from the left menu, and choosing the proper microphone and speakers from the two dropdown lists.

If your microphone or earphones are USB devices, you could also be having USB port issues. Make sure to confirm your USB port is working before you continue.

Close all open tabs in your browser . If you're having audio issues with Google Meet in the browser, you could have other tabs open that interfere with your speakers or microphone. Closing all tabs will fix this. While you're at it, consider clearing the browser cache as well to remove any lingering issues that could be causing problems.

Check if Bluetooth is enabled. If you haven't disabled Bluetooth on your computer , the sound will get routed to your Bluetooth device, and you may not hear anyone in the meeting. The same is true on your phone; make sure to disable Bluetooth on your mobile device . If you're using an iOS device, you may need to disable AirPlay as well.

If Google Meet audio is not working, you could be experiencing audio device driver issues. Take the time to update your sound card drivers. You can do this by using driver updater apps . Or visit a driver download website and install the driver that's right for your sound card.

How to Share Audio in Google Meet

Working from the comfort of your home has a lot of benefits, especially when you get to use amazing conferencing apps like Google Meet. However, when you share your screen, you’ll notice that the audio feature might be missing.

For now, Google Meet hasn’t come up with an ideal solution, but there are a couple of workarounds you can try. In this article, you’ll learn all about the various options available. The next time you start a meeting with a YouTube clip, everyone will be able to hear it.

Google Presentations with PC Sound

Preparing for an online work meeting is slightly different from doing it in the office, mainly because you have to ensure all the technical prerequisites are in order. If you’re a Windows user, you can ensure that the instructional video you’ve prepared has the accompanying audio or share other videos, animations, gifs, music, and more in your meetings .

Currently, you have three options. You can change the microphone settings in Windows 10 and Google Meets or use the “Present” option in Google Meets on Chrome. The “Present a Chrome tab” feature was “fully” released in May of 2021 . Here are your options.

Option 1: Adjust Microphone Settings to Share Audio in Google Meet

Here’s how to adjust your microphone settings in Windows 10.

After completing the above steps, the participants in the meeting won’t hear your voice because you set the studio for PC sounds. Therefore, ensure you let everyone know that’s going to happen before you make the changes. Otherwise, the scenario might create confusion.

After playing the audio you want, you can go back and switch the setting to your default microphone. Going from one microphone setting to another might not be the ideal solution, but it’s the only one available at the moment.

Option 2: Use “Present a Chrome” Tab to Share Audio in Google Meet

The official feed from the Google Workspace team shows that the “Present…” option is available for G Suite users, but we confirmed that it also works for general Google accounts. The feature only displays the tab you currently selected. However, a notification appears when you switch to a new one, asking if you want to switch to the current tab. Here’s how to use the “Present a Chrome tab” function.

Option 3: Use Another Device to Share Audio in Google Meet

Aside from changing your microphone settings in Windows 10 and Google Meets, it’s also possible to use your smartphone device simultaneously by using the “Use a phone for audio ” feature. Therefore, you can talk at the same time as presenting the video or images from your PC. However, using your phone for audio in Meets is currently limited to Google Workspace hosts only . It also mutes the PC’s audio while on the call.

How to Mute Participants on Google Meet

If you’re planning on sharing audio during your Google Meet presentation, you’re probably worried about too much noise or chatter. It would be nice if a “Mute All” button existed to click during active audio sharing.

Fortunately, Google Meet has just started introducing an option to mute everyone as of May 2021 by providing it to Google Meet hosts in Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals and Education Plus domains. All other users have to wait until further notice. For businesses and general users, it doesn’t mean all is lost. You can attempt to use a third-party browser add-on , or you can mute Google Meet participants individually with just a few clicks.

Google Meet: Mute Everyone using Individual Selection

The most guaranteed way to mute everyone during your Google Meet presentation is to mute each participant, one by one unless you can use “Mute All.” Here’s how to mute everyone individually.

• While you’re presenting, go to the “People” icon in the top right corner of the Google Meet window.
• On the list of participants, select a name you want to mute.
• You will have three icons show up, click on the middle one ( “microphone icon” ) .
• You will be asked to confirm if you want to mute this participant. Press “Mute.”

Now, this person’s microphone will get turned off. You can repeat the process as many times as you need if you want to mute everyone .

Google Meet: Mute Everyone using the “Mute all” Feature

When you use Google Meet for educational purposes, with many students participating, it’s helpful to know how to mute any unnecessary noise, primarily since teachers often use audio and video clips in classes. For those using Meet for Education Plus domains or Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals (as previously mentioned), you’re in luck. Feel free to mute everyone in one swoop. Just don’t forget that you cannot unmute . So, include something in your presentation to let participants know they can unmute their microphones as needed! Here’s how to mute everyone on Google Meet.

Google Meet: Mute for Listening, Then Unmute for Talking

Sometimes it’s hard not to want to jump in with comments, even when it’s not the right moment. If you’re the one sharing the audio, you want everyone to hear it first. Perhaps you’ll even have to resort to muting participants, especially if you’re dealing with students.

Second, until Google Meet figures out a better way for audio sharing, you can always switch from one microphone setting to another, as discussed above or use your smartphone to supply the audio. It’s not perfect, but it does the job.

Fortunately, Google Meet has come a long way in audio capabilities, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

How to fix audio problems in Google Meet

I've been singing the praises of Google's video chatting platforms like Google Duo and Google Meet for weeks now, talking about how they are both free and secure work from home conferencing alternatives to other platforms like Zoom . And while these platforms are great, like anything in tech, there are inevitable hiccups, hassles, and errors that can happen along the way. Some of the most common problems that people run into with video chatting software are audio bugs. We've all been on a video call where someone couldn't hear us, or we couldn't hear them (or both!). Luckily the fix is usually pretty simple. I'll walk you through some of the more common audio issues with Google Meet, and show you how you can troubleshoot and fix them yourself.

How to fix microphone problems in Google Meet

You might be muted

• If they can't hear you, check to see if the microphone button at the bottom of the screen is red with a line through it.
• If you were not one of the first five people to join the call, you were automatically muted. Click the mute button to speak (this works on your phone as well).

• Click on the settings icon in bottom right corner of Meet window.
• Click on Audio Options .
• Click on Input/Output , and see if the sound indcator moves when you speak. If not, then you're likely muted. Source: Android Central

Your microphone settings could be funky

If muting isn't the problem, check your device's audio input or microphone settings . Here's how to do it across platforms.

• Go to System Preferences .
• Click on Sound .
• Click on Input .
• Make sure the microphone is on.
• Adjust volume slider . Source: Android Central

• Open Sound settings .
• Click Recording .
• Double-click microphone .
• Select Levels .
• Make sure your microphone is on.
• Adjust volume slider and click OK .

On a Chromebook

• Follow the settings from the first section for checking and adjusting the microphone input on a Google Meet call.
• Alternatively, open up a Chrome browser tab .
• Click on the three-dot menu on the top right.
• Click on More Settings .
• Scroll down and click on Advanced .
• Under Privacy and Security, click Site Settings .
• Click on Microphone and check and adjust settings accordingly.

On your Android phone

• Open the Settings app.
• Scroll down and tap on Privacy .
• Tap on Permission Manager .
• Tap on Microphone .

• See if Meet is on the allowed list.
• Tap on Meet to allow microphone access.

Did you check your peripherals?

It may seem simple, but check your peripherals to see if you have been physically muted or your volume switches are turned down, whether it's on the keyboard or on any external microphones.

Last resorts

• Close other open tabs or apps that may be using audio in the background.
• Try leaving the video on your computer and joining audio via your phone through the dial-in phone number .
• If all else fails, restart your computer and try it all again!

In my experience, microphone issues tend to be my problem, not someone else's, and I've never had an issue that one of the steps above didn't rectify.

How to fix audio output/speaker problems in Google Meet

Your speaker or headphone settings could be out of whack

First, you need to check your device's audio output or speaker settings . Here's how to do it across multiple platforms.

• Click on Output .
• Adjust the volume slider . Source: Android Central

• Click Sound .
• Click Sound Control Panel .
• Click the Playback tab.
• Check to see which device is selected, and right-click to test audio.
• If no sound comes through, right-click to get to Properties and adjust the sound levels.
• Click on the settings menu (by the clock in the lower right corner) and make sure the volume is on.
• Alternatively, follow the steps in the first section to check audio output .

Check those peripherals

Check to see if you have any peripherals are using audio and adjust accordingly if something is off. You can adjust the volume settings on any plugged-in or Bluetooth external speakers or headphones you may be using, for example. If you are not actively using external speakers or headphones, make sure they're turned off and not connected as audio sources for the call.

• If those steps didn't work, restart your browser and rejoin the Meet session.
• If that doesn't work and you were using a different browser, try to connect to the Meet session in Chrome .
• Click the Turn On Captions button for a live transcription of the meeting.

Hopefully, one, or more, of these steps was enough to get your Google Meet audio working so that you can hear what is going on!

If it’s not Slack or Teams , it’s likely Google Meet. In today’s post pandemic world, you’re likely going to be using one of these programs for your next interview, office meeting, or big grant proposal. Getting prepared for these events today requires a lot more than dusting off a suit and picking out the office-suitable makeup. If you’re using Google Meet, for example, you’ll also want to pick out a professional 360-degree background and check to see that your camera and mic are working appropriately.

Problem: Can’t join or start a meeting

If you’re having problems joining an existing Google Meet video meeting or creating a new meeting, first make sure that you are signed in with a Google or Google Workspace account — you can do so by visiting the Google website, then clicking the blue Sign In button. If your account is one from your workplace, you may need to check with your administrator to ensure that Google Meet’s video calling is enabled for your organization.

At this time, only meetings set up by Google Workspace users will have a dial-in number, which allows meeting attendees to call into a meeting using their telephone. Additionally, while the U.S. does support the dial-in feature, not all countries around the world are included. It’s also worth noting that while all Google Workspace users have access to the dial-in feature for calls to the U.S. and Canada (and a list of other approved countries as well, if you have a supported Workspace account), dialing in internationally (for certain countries) requires an additional subscription to Google’s Meet Global Dialing service. If you have this subscription and wish to dial in with a country outside of the U.S. and Canada, be sure to check with Google to make sure that your desired country supports the dial-in feature .

Bug: Education users can’t join from outside the domain

If you are using a Google Workspace for Education account, there is a known bug in which a meeting creator must be present to approve or deny join requests from outside the domain. As a result, if the meeting creator is absent from the call, users from outside the domain won’t be able to join the call, and the Ask to Join page will crash. Until this issue is fixed, the best solution is to ensure the meeting creator stays on the call until all participants with external email addresses are present.

If you can no longer add additional people to your meeting, you may have reached the limit for your subscription. Personal Google accounts and G Suite Basic accounts have a limit of 100 participants. Education Fundamentals accounts are also limited to 100 participants, while G Suite Business, Business Standard, and Essentials accounts can contain up to 150 participants. (Business Starter is still capped at 100.) For Business Plus and Enterprise customers, Google Meet can support up to a maximum of 250 participants. Enterprise Essentials customers are still capped at 150, however. Education Plus accounts also have a maximum of 250 participants.

When you first join a Google Meet conference, the system will ask permission to use your camera and microphone. If you accidentally denied the system, you can change your response by following the steps given below:

Step 1 : Visit the Google Meet website , preferably using Google Chrome.

Step 2 : Click the New Meeting button and then select Start an Instant Meeting from the menu that pops up.

Step 3 : In the address bar on Chrome, click the Camera and Microphone Blocked icon (a small camera with a red X).

Step 4 : Click Always Allow https://meet.google.com to Access Your Camera and Microphone .

Step 5 : Click Done . A message may then pop up — just click Dismiss if it does. Then click on the Turn On Camera and Turn On Microphone icons at the bottom of the meeting window. Your camera and microphone should now be working properly.

Problem: People can’t see your camera when on MacOS

On the latest versions of MacOS (Mojave and later), you’ll need to permit Chrome or Firefox to use your webcam. This is a security measure to ensure no unapproved applications are using your webcam or microphone when they should not.

Note: Before following these steps, check to ensure that your camera is plugged in properly. If you can access your webcam in other apps, such as FaceTime or Photobooth, continue.

Step 1 : Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.

Step 2 : Select System Preferences .

Step 3 : Select the Security & Privacy setting.

Step 4 : Choose Privacy and then Camera .

Step 5 : Ensure that either Google Chrome or Firefox has a check next to it.

You can also follow these same steps if your microphone is denied. During step 4, select the Microphone option instead of the Camera option.

Bug: Drop-down menus won’t show during screen sharing

The team at Google is currently aware that when you share a window within Google Meet, drop-down menus will not show. If you need drop-down menus, the best option at this time is to share your whole screen instead of a certain window.

With MacOS Catalina or later, you need to allow your browser to record your screen before presenting. To enable this option via the System Preferences app, follow these steps:

Step 6 : Ensure that either Google Chrome or Firefox has a check next to it.

Several different factors can influence your video call quality. For starters, ensure that you’re using a high-definition webcam from a trusted manufacturer. (If you don’t have a great webcam , there isn’t much we can do.) Additionally, check to ensure the network you’re on is high-speed and can support the call. If you still have issues, attempt to close other browser tabs and applications that may be using up resources. Lastly, if you are using a VPN , attempt to disconnect from it, as it may be slowing down your connection.

A green icon next to Meet indicates that everything is operating as it should, while an orange/yellow or red icon will denote a problem that may explain why you can’t connect at the current time.

Visit the App Store on your iOS device or the Play Store on your Android device to make certain your version of Google Meet is current. Google only supports mobile Meet versions for six months, and older versions of the app may then cease to function correctly. Alternatively, delete the app and then reinstall it from your mobile device’s appropriate app store.

Google has said that meeting rooms added to all-day events will be “scheduled in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC),” which can lead to an error that prevents you from scheduling an all-day meeting. You can correct this problem by manually scheduling the event for 24 hours (using the drop-down Date and Time boxes) rather than selecting the All Day choice when you plan your meeting.

• Fixing Google Chrome: Google Meet is only available in Chrome. That means if you have any unaddressed issues with your Chrome browser, you might run into Google Meet errors. First, close down all of your tabs and restart your Chrome browser. Not only will this give you more memory for Chrome, a known memory hog, but it will also update Google Chrome automatically for Windows users. Next, try clearing your Chrome cache. Do this by selecting the three dots symbol next to user icon in the upper-right portion of your Chrome browser, typing “clear” in the search bar, and select “Clear browsing data”. From there be sure to select clear cache and restart your browser again.
• Google server issues could be to blame. Check  IsItDown to see if Google is working . If it’s not, it won’t help you attend your meeting, but it will save you some piece of mind. For added professionalism, set up a Zoom meeting and send an invite to the people you were meeting with, explaining the issue.
• Check your router and ISP: If Google Meet isn’t working, it could be a result of a poor internet connection and slow internet speeds. Try checking your ISP’s website to see if there are expected slowdowns, double-check your router’s status, and deal with these common Wi-Fi problems .

Fix 1: Lower the Display Resolution

Step 1: Open the Settings app on Windows using Windows + I keys.

Step 2: Go to System > select the Display menu.

Open Google Chrome and deliver a presentation during Google Meet. You should see a drastic reduction in lag.

Fix 2: Update Display and GPU Drivers

If your computer’s display and GPU drivers are outdated, you might experience heavy lag during Google Meet presentations. You must update the display and GPU drivers from the Device Manager menu to fix this. You can use driver update programs or follow the steps below.

Step 1: Right-click the Start menu and click Device Manager .

Step 2: Expand the Display adaptors menu, right-click on your display driver , and select Update driver .

Step 4: Click Automatically search for drivers , then reboot your PC and try delivering presentations over Google Meet.

Fix 3: Turn Off Hardware Acceleration

Turning off hardware acceleration is a valid fix if the GPU is outdated, weak, or overloaded. Hardware acceleration puts a greater burden on the GPU. By disabling it, you reduce the burden and kill the lag.

Step 1: Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.

Step 2: Go to the System section and select Display .

Step 3: Click Graphics in the Related settings section.

Step 4: Click Change default graphics settings , then toggle off Hardware acceleration in the next windows.

Fix 4: Use Your Phone for Audio

If you organized the meeting through a Google Workspace account, use a phone for audio in a video meeting. This option is great if you have poor internet connections. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Once you are in the waiting room, before joining a meeting, click on Join and use your phone for audio .

Step 2: Input your phone number in the provided field and click on Call me and join . This should initiate a call to your phone.

Step 3: Answer the call and follow the instructions to use the phone as audio.

Business meetings are anything but fun. It’s all about the numbers, the KPIs, evaluating everybody’s performance, and so on. Meeting presentations are very boring, and everybody agrees to that. Even though everybody has moved to the digital realm, it seems that meeting presentations are here to stay.

But there are moments when the other meeting attendees can’t see the screen you’re sharing, or their presentation won’t show up on your screen. If you’re experiencing this problem on Google Meet, follow the troubleshooting solutions below.

How to Fix Google Meet Presentation Issues

Quick fixes.

One of the quickest ways to solve this problem is to quit the meeting, disable all the browser extensions, and rejoin the meeting using Chrome. Google Meet supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, but Google’s browser is less prone to bugs than other browsers.

On the other hand, other users confirmed they solved the problem by installing the Google Meet Grid View Fix extension . Check if this method yields positive results for you as well.

If you’re using the Google Meet app, log out and uninstall the app. Then restart your device and reinstall the app. Additionally, make sure your browser and operating system are up-to-date.

Several users solved this issue by hitting the chat icon on the right side. Do that and check if the presenter’s screen shows up.

Enable Spotlight View

Make sure you did not pin the host or the presentation screen. Instead, use the Spotlight layout. Go to Settings , select Change layout , and enable Spotlight Mode .

This full-screen layout gives you the option to display the presentation on the entire screen.

Set Video Options to Auto

• First, join your meeting and then click on Settings .
• Select the Video Option .
• Then click on the Receive Resolution option.

• Check if the presentation is showing now.

Power Wash Your Chromebook

Other users fixed this problem by deleting their local profiles. If you’re on ChromeOS, power-wash your device.

• Sign out of your account, and then press and hold down the Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R keys.

• Keep in mind this action will reset all your settings and wipe out all user information from your device.
• Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your Chromebook.
• Then sign back in and check the results.

Allow Your Browser to Record Your Screen

If you use a Macbook, you need to allow Meet and your browser to record and share your screen.

• Navigate to System Preferences , and select Security & Privacy .
• Then navigate to Privacy and select Screen recording in the left-hand pane.
• On the right-hand pane, tick the Chrome or Safari box.

If other Google Meet users can’t see your screen when you’re presenting, or the other way around, disable your browser extensions. Then switch to Google Chrome if you’re not using it already. Before you get started

If you have an issue with your audio in a meeting, here’s how you can fix it.

Tip: If you have microphone and speaker issues but there’s some audio, you can troubleshoot video and audio quality in a meeting .

• Make sure you’re not in Companion mode, where the microphone and speaker are unavailable. If you’re in Companion mode, leave and rejoin the meeting. Learn about Companion mode .
• To share audio from a presentation, on your computer, share a tab. You can’t share audio from your mobile device. Learn how to present during a video meeting .
• When you use a monitor, make sure that it's not your selected audio.
• Check your computer’s Bluetooth™ settings are correctly connected and devices are turned on.
• Make sure you’re unmuted.
• Other participants: It’s likely their microphone issue. Otherwise, there could be an issue with your speaker.
• Your tile: It’s likely your microphone issue. Otherwise, it could be an issue with the speaker of another participant.

Fix audio issues in Android devices

Allow meet access to your microphone and camera.

• Go back to the Permissions page.

Make sure to check if:

• You have the most recent version of Google Meet .
• Your device’s volume is up.
• You’re connected to the correct external microphone and speaker.
• You tried to disconnect and reconnect your Bluetooth devices.
