Amid rapid industrial growth and escalating water scarcity, water management has become a critical concern for industries worldwide. India, with its burgeoning industrial sector, is experiencing acute water challenges.

According to a 2020 NITI Aayog report, over 600 million people in India are facing severe water stress, and 21 cities are predicted to deplete their groundwater reserves by 2030. The industrial sector, a major consumer of water, contributes significantly to this crisis.

Serial entrepreneur Ganesh Shankar realised the urgent need for innovative solutions in water management and founded FluxGen in 2019. The B2B startup provides end-to-end water solutions to optimise industrial water usage, enhance efficiency, and promote sustainability.

"The idea for FluxGen came from a deep concern for our water resources and a desire to make a tangible difference. I wanted to develop a solution that would enable industries to manage their water consumption more efficiently and contribute to the larger goal of sustainability," Shankar, Founder and CEO tells YourStory .

The startup began operations in 2021 after three years of research and development. It leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to help businesses monitor and optimise water usage in real-time.

Shankar was later joined by Emanuel Deepak, who was promoted from senior manager to COO.

Integrating IoT and AI

The Bengaluru-based startup has developed AquaGen, an advanced water management system that monitors water flow and levels in real-time to optimise water usage, enhance efficiency, and ensure sustainability in industrial settings.

Using IoT-enabled sensors and AI, AquaGen integrates with existing water infrastructure to monitor facilities. The system collects data from strategically placed sensors, transmitting it to a cloud platform to analyse consumption patterns and forecast future usage.

“We enable industries to gain real-time insights into water usage, identify inefficiencies like leaks or excessive consumption, and receive immediate alerts through a user-friendly mobile and web application,” says Shankar, who has worked for over 13 years in the sustainability and climate tech sectors.

He previously founded Airprobe.Tech (acquired by US-based Zeitview), a drone analytics startup for solar farm inspection, and The Sustainability Mafia, a network promoting collaboration among sustainability leaders.

The company says its data-driven approach helps industries reduce water wastage by up to 30%. One of the ways is by minimising non-revenue water loss, which is water produced but not billed due to leaks, theft, or metering inaccuracies.

Its AquaGPT feature offers prescriptive alerts and recommendations based on analysing historical data to predict future water usage patterns, allowing for proactive management.

Additionally, FluxGen launched 'Rainwater Intelligence' and 'Waste Water Intelligence' in April 2020, enhancing rainwater harvesting and boosting the efficiency of sewage and effluent treatment plants.

Business model

FluxGen started with Rs 1 crore funding from angel inventors and has a team of 35 people.

The startup generates revenue through the sale of its AquaGen system and yearly subscriptions to its software platform, which is equipped with analytics, reporting, and monitoring capabilities. The founder says cost varies depending on the specific requirements of each facility, including the number of sensors needed and the features selected.

The startup primarily operates in healthcare, manufacturing, commercial real estate, and public services sectors and serves over 110 customers including Tata Steel, Aditya Birla Group, Microsoft, Ashok Leyland, and Adani Group.

Its revenue grew from about Rs 1 crore in FY23 to Rs 5 crore in FY24  and saw an increase in booking value from under Rs 2 crore to Rs 11 crore, during the same period.

FluxGen recently partnered with Microsoft to implement a water replenishment project at St. Martha's Hospital and Whitefield Hospital in Bengaluru. The project uses sensor fusion, AI, and IoT technology to reduce water usage by 50% and won the Microsoft Entrepreneurs for Positive Impact Cup 2024.

Market and challenges

The water and wastewater treatment technology market in India is valued at $1.02 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $1.71 billion by 2029, according to Mordor Intelligence.

The startup is in talks with investors to raise around $5 million and plans to close it in the coming 2-3 months. It aims to achieve Rs 100 crore in revenue within the next three years.

It is set to deploy its solutions in Africa and the Middle East following pilots and expects to receive commercial orders soon.

While talking about challenges, Shankar explains, "Navigating the water sector in India was like trying to swim upstream. The perception of water as a low-cost resource meant there was little urgency to invest in conservation, and the presence of established giants in the industry made it even tougher for a startup like ours to gain a foothold.”

“But we knew that water scarcity was a ticking time bomb, so we focused on innovation, creating solutions that not only addressed immediate needs but also positioned us ahead of the curve as regulations and investor demands began to catch up," he adds.

LG Electronics weighs India IPO to chase $75 billion goal

Chief executive officer william cho said an indian market debut is one of several options it’s weighing..

LG Electronics Inc. is considering an initial public offering for its India business, tapping a booming stock market to help hit a target of $75 billion in electronics revenue by 2030.

Chief Executive Officer William Cho said an Indian market debut is one of several options it’s weighing to revitalize a decades-old consumer electronics business. It’s the first time the South Korean company, which competes head-on with larger rival Samsung Electronics Co., has spoken publicly about an Indian debut, the subject of persistent market and media speculation.

Cho — who ascended to the top post in 2021 after more than three decades with the flagship of the family-owned LG Group — has set a goal of growing the electronics business to an annual revenue of 100 trillion won ($75 billion) by 2030. That’s versus overall company revenue of about $65 billion in 2023. It aims to get there in part by earning more from enterprise clients — targeting about 45% of sales from other companies by the end of the decade, versus 35% now.

“It is one of many options we can consider,” Cho told Bloomberg Television. “I understand there’s increased interest among global investors,” he said, referring to a potential IPO in India. “As of now, nothing is confirmed.”

In India, LG seeks to sustain rapid growth. In the first six months of this year, revenue at LG’s unit within the Asian country rose 14% to a record 2.87 trillion won, while net income climbed 27% to 198.2 billion won.

Any IPO would coincide with a boom in India’s capital markets. More than 200 companies went public in IPOs that raised $7.1 billion this year, making it one of the busiest markets in this space. At least 30 IPOs joined the pipeline as demand powered by domestic money pushes companies to explore listings. Korean peer Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to raise as much as $3.5 billion in an Indian IPO, Bloomberg News reported last month.

“We have been watching carefully what’s going on in the Indian market in terms of IPOs and following similar industry and similar IPO cases,” Cho said. LG hasn’t yet calculated possible valuations for its Indian unit, he added.

Cho, 61, plans to nurture new businesses that can each bring in more than 1 trillion won of annual revenue. Among them is heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, for which the company has 11 production sites globally. Chillers — large air conditioners for buildings — have become key for artificial intelligence data centers, which are sprouting up across the world as companies pursue generative AI. Over the past three years, overseas sales of LG’s chillers have grown 40% annually, on average.

LG is also expanding its subscription service for home appliances. In Korea, consumers can rent products such as washing machines and laptops ranging from three to six years by paying a monthly fee. In theory, that improves affordability and convenience: Some 35% of consumers are now opting for subscriptions, Cho said. The company recently began offering subscriptions in Malaysia and plans to roll that model out to customers in Thailand, Taiwan and India starting this year, and potentially the US and Europe in the future. LG expects revenue from the subscription business to grow 60% to about $1.3 billion in 2024.

The company’s also planning to expand its free ad-supported streaming services. Cho said LG will invest 1 trillion won by 2027 to grow its webOS-based advertising and content business.

“Half of my career was spent outside Korea, and it is about understanding customers and creating new business models for them,” said Cho, who has worked with LG in North America, Germany and Australia.

India's refusal to take a side in the Ukraine war is frustrating the West. But it has its reasons.

  • Despite pressure from Western allies, India has refused to isolate Russia over the Ukraine war.
  • India's Narendra Modi this week spoke with both Ukraine's and Russia's leaders.
  • India is the world's largest importer of Russian oil and depends on Russia for military equipment.

Insider Today

When Narendra Modi visited Ukraine over the weekend, he greeted its president Volodymyr Zelenskyy with an exuberant bear hug.

He did the same to Vladimir Putin only weeks ago when he traveled to Moscow to meet the Russian president, much to the anger of Zelenskyy.

"It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world's largest democracy hug the world's most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day," Zelenskyy wrote on X at the time.

Modi's visits to both Ukraine and Russia characterize his relentless ambiguity on the Ukraine war. He has not condemned nor supported the invasion and is now acting as a peacemaker.

The diplomatic highwire act highlights the dilemma Modi faces as he seeks to balance pressure from the US to show more support for Ukraine against maintaining good ties with Russia.

A quick end to the war

In the wake of the Ukraine trip, Modi called Putin. In a post on X, Modi said he reiterated "India's firm commitment to support an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict."

Dinakar Peri, a fellow at the Council for Strategic and Defense Research, told Business Insider that Modi's Ukraine visit was high on symbolism.

"Although the image of India being a peacemaker is largely rhetoric, the fact of the matter is that India is definitely uniquely positioned in comparison to many other countries due to the kind of bandwidth they have with Russia," said Peri.

Rahul Bhatia, an analyst with the Eurasia Group, told BI that while India is reluctant to come down on one side in the Ukraine war, it sees grave dangers in a prolonged conflict in Ukraine.

"India has sought to take a balanced approach to the war in Ukraine. New Delhi wants to maintain its relationship with Russia regardless of its diplomatic isolation," said Bhatia.

India's ties with the Kremlin are tested

Modi's insistence on not taking a side in Ukraine is likely to baffle and frustrate many Western observers, but analysts say there are vital economic and strategic goals behind India's position.

India has long had close diplomatic ties with Russia . During the Cold War, it relied on the Kremlin for military support while the US-backed regional rival Pakistan.

It now depends on Russia for oil supplies, surpassing China this week to become Russia's top oil importer.

"Most of the oil India imports from Russia is actually going to Europe," said Peri. "India is just a conduit — the oil is refined here, and the refined petroleum products are going to Europe as we speak."

"In that way, India has played the middle role of stabilizing the larger global economy, which would otherwise have gone for a toss."

Peri also pointed out India's dependence on Russia for military equipment, as well as upgrades and spare parts.

"Around 60% of Indian military equipment is of Russian origin," said Peri. "We have received a lot from other countries in the last few decades, like France, Israel, and increasingly so from the US, but we're still heavily Russian-oriented."

But the Ukraine war has shaken up India's relations with the Kremlin.

The US is pressuring India to help isolate Putin as punishment for the Ukraine invasion, and India is worried about the Kremlin's increasingly close relationship with China, which has backed Russia amid the Ukraine invasion.

"India-US ties are not just about Russia or the war in Ukraine," said Peri. "They're also about trade and strategic cooperation, which in some cases is also underpinned by concerns over China or the larger developments in the Indo-Pacific."

India sees Russia as a buffer against China's aggression

India has long been concerned about China's increasing aggressiveness in Asia, with a Himalayan border dispute erupting into clashes that left 24 people dead in 2020.

Indian and Chinese militaries have been engaged in a standoff on the disputed region of Ladakh since 2020. Although the countries have disengaged on several points, the standoff has continued.

Peri said that is India dependent on good ties with the Kremlin to help mitigate that threat: "The standoff created new dynamics for India, and those are all factors which will be in Indian calculations on the stand it takes."

Bhatia agreed that India has an eye on China when it engages with Russia. "While New Delhi accepts that Russia and China will gradually grow closer, it believes that maintaining a good relationship with Moscow will ensure that Russia remains neutral when India-China border tensions flare up," he said.

It also relies on close ties with the US to help counter China's aggression, reviving the "Quad" dialogue with the US, Australia, and Japan in 2017 to counter China's threat.

In the meantime, Modi will likely continue India's tightrope act, maintaining its alliance with the US while seeking not to alienate the Kremlin as it warily watches China's growing might.

Let’s get started –

What is the difference between packaged water and mineral water plant.

Before getting into detailed business plan, you need to understand the difference between packaged drinking water plant and mineral water plant. Many people do not know the differences and get confused at the very beginning of their business venture.

Packaged Drinking Water or Bottled water Plant – In this plant, we process borewell water and we reduce the TDS(Total Dissolved Solid) in borewell water with the help of RO process i.e Reverse Osmosis Process. Packaged drinking water does not contains any minerals.

Mineral Water Plant – In this plant, we use water from natural sources like spring water and mountain water. These waters contain mineral which is beneficial for human consumption. In mineral water plant we process and add minerals to water if required. Minerals found in mineral water are sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.

In this article I will share information for setting up of packaged drinking water plant which is also known as bottled drinking water plant.

What type of licenses are required?

The following licenses and documents are required for setting up a bottled water plant in India:

  • Small scale industry registration certificate
  • AOA and MOA of the business
  • ISI certification from Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS )
  • Pollution control certificate from local pollution board office
  • Feed water test report from laboratory
  • Pest control certificate

Steps involved in packaged driking water production

  • Identify source of raw water – This is the first step in which you will decide about the source of water which you will use in production of packaged drinking water. The source of water could be bore well water, muncipal supply or other sources in which treatment is possible.
  • Store raw water – The next process is to store raw water in raw water storage tank with the help of pumping system. Submercible pump could be used in case of bore well water.
  • Water treatment system – In water treatment process, we use clorine dosing system, water softening process, reverse osmosis (RO), UV sterilization and Ozone disinfection.
  • Testing of water – In this process we test purified water in inhouse water testing laboratory. In the laboratory, water is tested for micro biological and chemical parameters. We will discuss about type of laboratory requiment later in this article.
  • Purified water storage (Bottles/Jars/Pouch) – Production machinery is required to blow blottles and store purified water in it. Similarly, machines are available for storage in jars and pouches.

Process Involved in purification of raw water (Technical Aspects)

  • Coagulation process – This is the first step in which we add Alum chemical in raw water to remove impurities. The Alum chemical produces positive charges which stick together with negative charge of the particals and forms large particles which can be removed easily. After coagulation process, water is allowed to settle for 1 hour.
  • Reverse Osmosis – With the help of RO process we remove dissolved impurities such as salts from water.
  • Chlorination of water – This process is used to kill bacterias and other micro organism with the help of bubbling chlorine gas in chlorination tank.
  • Sand filteration – The water is then passed through sand filters to remove undissolved impurities.
  • Carbon filteration de-chlorination – After sand filteration process, we then pass water through carbon filter which removes odour and colour. Dechlorification also takes place using carbon filters.
  • Packing and bottling – Packing and bottling is done with the help of machines.

Packaged Drinking Water Plant Cost Estimation

RO Plant – 2000 ltr 1 3.50
Alum Treatment Tanks 2 0.70
Chlorination Tank (STEEL) 1 0.50
Sand Filter & Carbon Filter 1 – 1 0.90
UV Disinfectant System 1 0.25
Raw water tank 1 0.30
Purified water tank 1 0.30
Pumping motors 2 0.40
Bottling Machine Automatic 1 6
Lab Equipments 1 1
Miscellaneous Tools 1

From the above table, we come to know that cost of machines for starting mineral water plant is around 15 lakhs rupess. Apart from machinery, you will need a proper location for plant installation and some basis furniture.

After the installation of plant, you have make a proper business plan for production of bottled drinking water. That business plan will include following details –

  • Salary and wages for staffs
  • Working capital per month
  • Production target
  • Other expensenses in raw materials if any

Production Capacity & Profit Margin Calculation

Total Production of your plant will depend on how many hours you will work i.e number of shifts assuming that 1 shift is of 8 hours. Suppose you will 2 shifts i.e 16 hours. Therefore, you can produce 8000 bottles in 8hrs.

Profit Margin Calculation –

Now we will calcute yearly profit in this business:-

  • Daily production is 8000 bottles i.e yearly production will be 8000 X 365 = 2920000 Bottles
  • No. Of crates – assuming one crate has 12 bottles – 2920000/12 = 24333 crates yearly
  • Selling price of one crate will be – Rs 80 per crate
  • Total turnover – 80 x 24333 = Rs 1 Crore 94 lakhs
  • Total profit = Turnover – cost of production

Now you have to calculate the cost of production of 24333 crates. The cost of production will include salary to staff, raw materials expenses, electricity usage, laboratory expenses and other expenses.

The cost of production of 24333 crates of packaged drinking water will come around 12 lakhs monthly. So annual cost of production will be 1 crore 44 Lakhs

Total profit = 1 crore 94 lakhs – 1 crore 44 lakhs = 50 lakhs Annualy

Branding and Marketing

As the demand of packaged drinking water is increasing rapidly, you have to capture the market and start promoting your brand as soon you start production. Include marketing expenses in your business plan and use it accordingly.

The process of setting up a mineral water plant typically includes obtaining a business license, renting or purchasing factory space, buying equipment, and hiring staff. Other considerations may include obtaining permits, conducting market research, and creating a marketing plan.

The demand for mineral water is difficult to quantify due to the numerous factors that can affect it. Some of these factors include the price of alternative beverages, weather conditions, and health trends. In general, though, the demand for mineral water tends to be fairly high, especially in developed countries where clean water is readily available.

The challenges in setting up a mineral water plant include: 1. Finding a source of water that is high in mineral content. 2. Ensuring that the water is properly filtered and treated before bottling. 3. Creating a market for the mineral water.

The type of management required for a mineral water plant depends on the size and scope of the operation. For a small operation, management may only need to be concerned with daily production and quality control. For a larger operation, management may also need to be involved in marketing, distribution, and finance.

The cost of setting up a mineral water plant in India depends on a number of factors, including the scale of production, the raw materials used, the equipment used, and the location of the plant. A small-scale mineral water plant may cost as little as Rs. 2 lakhs, while a large-scale plant may cost as much as Rs. 20 crore.

There are several marketing strategies that can be used for a mineral water plant. One strategy is to focus on the health benefits of drinking mineral water. This can be done through advertising and using health professionals to promote the benefits of drinking mineral water. Another strategy is to focus on the taste and quality of the mineral water. This can be done through using celebrity endorsements, special events, and social media campaigns.

Not only the large-scale industries, but the small-scale businesses are also certainly proving an incredible profit these days.

2. Certification and License

Whether it be a small or large-scale industry, each of them requires certain and different kinds of licenses and registrations from the authorities of the government. As per the state government of a particular state, the certification and permit requirements may vary. So, to know the exact laws for setting up the industry in an individual state, you need to check up on the following points:

  • Firm registration
  • ISI certification
  • Standard authority and food safety measurements
  • Certification of pollution control
  • The test reports of water from an authorized laboratory

There is a wide range of machines available for the processing of mineral water. Go for the device that fits your budget, investment, and packaging as two options, mainly fully automatic and semi-automatic machines, are there.

6. Steps of water purification

While setting up the industry, one must know some of the basic steps of purification. It includes:

  • Storage of water

Through pumping, all the water gets collected in the storage pump to add alum for coagulation.

  • Osmosis technique

Let the water settle for 1 hour, and with the help of osmosis, remove all the impurities present in the water.

  • Chlorine gas process

The bubbling of chlorine gas removes all the disinfection of the purified water from the chlorine tank.

  • Sand filtration

Filter taps are used to dissolve the impurities after passing water from the sand water filters.

  • Carbon filtration

Through carbon filtration, the dichlorination process takes place for the removal of color and odor.

  • Microfiltration

For final disinfection, water is passed through microfilters followed by an ultraviolet disinfection system.

  • Bottle filling

Now, mineral water is ready. It is passed to the water filling machine, capping, and seals the bottles with an ozone generator.

Finally, the water from packaged drinking water plants is safe to drink and packed for transportation and selling.

7. Marketing and branding

The criteria of your success depend upon the quality of the product you sell. Moreover, marketing strategies are linked with selling. So, decide your target market and build a strong distribution network.

How to Start a Water Supply Business in India?

water business plan india

With rapid urbanization and increasing population, the demand for clean drinking water in Indian cities is on the rise. Businesses and civil societies are willing to pay for easy access to fresh, mineral-rich drinking water for daily consumption. That makes the water supply business one of the most profitable ventures to own. However, you need a well-planned strategy to be successful in your water distribution venture. This blog will explore the step-by-step process of starting a water supply business in India.

A step-by-step guide to starting a water supply business

Here are the steps you must take to establish a profitable commercial water suppliers venture in India:

1. Create a business plan

Before starting a business, you need a solid roadmap for success. First, perform market research to identify competitors, prevalent products, and prices. It will also help you assess the actual cost of starting and operating a water business. Then you can easily formulate a business plan and decide your target market and price of your product.

2. Create a company

The next step commercial water suppliers take is they formulate a company. You have to decide the name of your company and its structure. Most water distribution businesses opt for Private Limited Company and LLP Registration. But if you are a solopreneur, you can also register your business as a Sole Proprietorship.

3. Get all necessary licenses

When private water suppliers have formed a company, they must apply for various licences and registrations necessary to run a business in India. And since water is for consumption, you will also need additional safety permits. Here is a list of permits and registrations you must apply for when starting a water supply business:

I. GST Registration

II. PAN Registration

III. Digital Signature Certificate Registration

IV. ISO/BIS Certification

V. FSSAI Registration

VI. Pollution Control and Pest Control Certifications

4. Select a location for the factory

Location is also a key decision for commercial water suppliers because a mineral water factory requires adequate space for machinery and storage. Ideally, you will need a facility spread over 1000 square feet or more to fit all the equipment and storage units. Another factor to consider when choosing the location is the proximity to the target market. Make sure your clients are accessible within your serviceable radius.

5. Decide on the equipment

The next decision private water suppliers make is to decide the equipment they want for their factory. You will need a water pumping machine, a water purifying machine, and a water packaging machine. Depending on your needs, you can decide on the machinery based on its production capacity and level of automation it offers.

6. Acquire funds

At last, your water supply business needs adequate funds to function. One of the best ways to fund your business is to avail of a business loan. You can apply for secured and unsecured business loans to set up a business. You can also take loans tailored to meet specific business needs like purchasing raw materials, equipment financing, working capital needs, etc. Business loans give you instant access to funds and you can repay the loan as your business grows.

Wrapping up

That was the step-by-step guide to help you start a water distribution business. If you need funds for your water supply venture, check out Tata Capital, India’s most trusted financial service provider. How to start a packaged drinking water company?

  • Comprehensive planning – Starting a mineral water business is no mean task. To achieve satisfactory goals, you must be ready to put in hard work. You need to be ready with contingency plans for meeting any unforeseen circumstance. For this, adequate planning at all stages is necessary.
  • Market research is a must – If you desire to setup your own plant, you must have information about the mineral water business, permits needed, machines necessary, water processing technology and other associated features.
  • Getting funds – Interested candidates need to opt for credit from any financial institution. 1.50 Crore is not a small amount. Once you have the funds in hand, you can start the next phase of planning.
  • Opting for franchise – Opting for franchise is another way of starting your packaged water business. Each company has its specific rules for offering franchise. For instance, to get a franchise of Bisleri, you need to make sure that there is no other such service provider in the area. Otherwise, your application will be rejected by the company.
  • Selection of location – A packaged water manufacturing plant requires a significant area. After arranging funds, it is time to attain a suitable plot, where you have power supply, transportation, and adequate natural water resource.
  • Attaining the machines – All machines, which have been listed in the table, are available in the market. These high end machines can be custom made according to the requirement of the owner.
  • Attain permits – This business is directly related to health and wellbeing of people. Thus, government has strict policies to ensure quality products. You need to apply for and prove yourself worthy of getting the necessary licenses.
  • Hiring human resource – Next comes hiring people for operating the machines, and maintaining smooth functioning in the plant.
  • Actual manufacture – Once all these steps have been completed, it is time to start work on the actual water processing and bottling.

Packaging of the product

Packaging is another important aspect of the mineral water manufacturing industry. If the capping and packaging is not done properly, then the quality of water will deteriorate. There are separate machines for manufacturing water pouches. These machines can cost anything between Rs. 1.25 lakhs to Rs. 1.75 lakhs. Other than that, automatic capping and packing machines are also available. The cost of these bottling machines can range from Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs. 7 lakhs.

Once a set of bottled have been filled, capped and sealed, they are grouped and sent to the packing unit. Here, with the help of an automated machine, these bottles are packed in transparent packets. Once sealing is complete, these are placed in cardboard boxes. These cardboard boxes are then sealed with tape. In medium sized plants, it is done manually, but in bigger factories, automated machines are installed for this task as well. After this, these boxes are coded and stacked on delivery vans to reach their destination.

Permits necessary for the business

  • SSI registration – Appropriate license from the Small Scale Industries department is a must for starting the business. The permit helps in acquiring funding, equipment and related items with ease.
  • BIS registration – License from the Bureau of Indian Standards is a must to manufacture any item. The ISI is the mark of quality and purity. Thus, this certificate is all the more important for mineral water business.
  • Pollution control report – The state government issues Pollution Control Certification to several manufacturing industries. The experts test the water, surrounding, equipment, production process and packaging methods to ensure that the factory is not adding to pollution levels in the area.
  • Water sample analysis – Water is the main resource you need to start mineral water factory. For that, you need a clean source of water. Getting samples of this water tested at government labs is a must. If they are happy with the quality of water, then you will get the permits.
  • Pest control reports – Safety and hygiene is of utmost importance in a mineral water production company. Thus, you need to get permit from the pest control department
  • NOC certificate – It is the responsibility of the factory owner to get no objection certificate from the Gram Panchyat or Municipality.
  • Worker medical certificates – The owner of the company must get health reports of each employee. The owner needs to ensure that the workers are not suffering from any communicable disease. Otherwise, the health department will not give the license.
  • Trademark and brand registration – It is better to pot for brand name and logo registration. It will safeguard the identity of the company.
  • Land ownership registration – A significant land area is needed to establish the factory. Whether you own the plot or get in on lease, you need to submit the papers, and share the information with the state authority to attain land permits.
  • Layout grant permits – You need to get the layout plan sanctioned from the Municipal or Gram Panchayat. For this, you need to submit all architectural plans of the plant, after getting thumbs up from a registered architect.
  • Power certificates – Whether your mineral water plant is small or big, it will require a lot of electricity. All heavy duty machines require electricity to operate. It is not possible to do so with domestic connections. You must apply for commercial connection to the respective government department. Once you get this permit, the power company will install commercial meters at the plant.
  • Certification from power agency – You will not be able to start production until you acquire the safety certificate from the power enterprise and department. The experts will visit the plant, check the meter, wiring, and safety equipment. If they are happy with the report, then they will give the grant to start production.

Risks and management

  • Preventing underground water pollution – As these plants depend on ground or underground water sources, and waste water is drained out, steps must be taken to prevent any risk to these natural water sources.
  • Safe storage of fuel and chemicals – The commercial water purification plants use a number of chemicals. The machines also run on fuel. Better care must be taken to store these chemicals and fuel, to keep risks and accidents at bay.
  • No faulty storage of products – A lot depends on the storage facility. If the storage areas are not clean, then the packaged water can turn bad in no time. Risks can be averted by paying attention to capping, sealing, boxing and boxing activities.
  • Adequate quality control – Another risk, closely associated with the mineral water business is inability to maintain high quality of water. It is the responsibility of the R&D department to carry out batch tests to make sure that purification and addition of preservatives have been done accurately.

Waste management

The bottled water manufacturing plants generate a high percentage of liquid waste on daily basis. The effluents have high potential to increase soil and water pollution. To prevent environmental degradation, these waste products must be treated. The plants must ensure that only treated wastes are going out in the sewage drains. The slant of main drains, going out of the plant, must be adequate. These drains must be covered, and should not be placed adjacent to water processing and packaging units. Back run of dirty water, into the plant must be stopped at all costs. Chemicals must not be stored alongside bottled water boxes.

It is necessary to create awareness among people. But hoping that everyone will readily purchase a bottle of mineral water is not right. Drinking packaged water is not the only option. Boil and strain water before consumption. It will kill germs, as well as remove insoluble particles from the water. One should never take chances with his/her health. Those who can afford it must stick to consuming treated mineral water.

Purify and Pack the Natural Mineral Water

Here are the steps to purify and pack the natural mineral water:

  • Collect the water  in a storage tank from the source
  • Remove Impurities  by letting the water sit for an hour or two.
  • Bubble chlorine gas  in the chlorination tank. It is also the early disinfection process.
  • Let the water pass through the  sand filters  to remove the indissolvable impurities.
  • After that, pass the water from the  carbon filter  to remove colour, odour and dechlorinate it.
  • Then the water is passed through the  UV Disinfection system  and  micro filters  for final disinfection.
  • Finally, the water transfers to the water bottling plant, where the  filling machine  fills water into the bottles.
  • After that, with the help of the  ozone generator , the bottles are sealed with caps.
  • At the final stage, the bottles are  labelled  and are ready to drink and sell.

However, you can avoid few steps from this process if you are sourcing the water from the purest mountain like the Himalayas.

But, only after consulting an expert and approval from the BSI.

The price of natural mineral water bottle ranges from Rs. 40- Rs. 60 per litre in India.
