Demonte  Colony is by far the most critically acclaimed and the best Tamil horror movie. It follows the story of 4 drunk friends who make the stupid decision of exploring a haunted bungalow. All hell breaks loose (literally) when one of them steals a diamond necklace from the bungalow. The movie is well made and the narration adds to the creepiness of the movie. Pillai nila is a 1985 reincarnation-based Tamil horror flick. This movie was considered to be one of the most terrifying horror movies of its time. It delves into the story of Dolly who commits suicide when she is rejected by the married man she is in love with and gets reincarnated as the man’s daughter. Dolly then through the child tries her best to woo the man which leads all of them to be in a strange circumstance.

Kanchana is a Tamil horror comedy that also throws light on a very important social issue. The movie revolves around the possession of a young man by three ghosts who lead the man and his family to uncover a dark truth. The movie sends a valuable message and gives a platform to the issues of the transgender community. கார்டியன் கதை: ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் நடிப்பில் வெளியான முனி படத்தில் எப்படி ஹீரோ தனது உடம்பை பேய்க்கு வாடகை விட்டு கெட்டவர்களை அழிப்பார்களோ அதே போலத்தான் இந்த படத்தில் ஹன்சிகா அதே வேலையை பார்க்கிறார். யோகி பாபு நடிப்பில் வெளியான பேய் மாமா படத்தின் கதையும் இதே தான். சிறு வயதில் இருந்தே அதிர்ஷ்டமில்லாதவராக விளங்கும் ஹன்சிகாவுக்கு திடீரென நல்ல வேலை, சந்தோஷமான வாழ்க்கை கிடைக்கிறது. அதற்கு என்ன காரணம் என புரியாமல் யோசிக்கும் அவருக்கு இதெல்லாம் ஒரு ஆவி தான் செய்கிறது என்பது தெரிய வருகிறது. அந்த ஆவி பழிவாங்க துடிக்கும் சுரேஷ் மேனன், ஸ்ரீமன், அபிஷேக் வினோத் மற்றும் ஸ்ரீராம் பார்த்தசாரதி உள்ளிட்டோரை பழிவாங்க ஹன்சிகா எப்படி உதவுகிறார் என்பது தான் இந்த கார்டியன் படத்தின் கதை.

படம் எப்படி இருக்கு?: ஹன்சிகா முன்னணி நடிகர்களுடன் இணைந்து நடித்த படங்களே சரியாக போகவில்லை. ஆனாலும், அவரது அழகை ரசிக்க தனிக்கூட்டமே இருந்தது. திருமணத்துக்குப் பிறகும் தொடர்ந்து பல படங்களில் நடித்து வருகிறார். ஆக்‌ஷன் ஹீரோயினாக வேண்டும் என ஹாரர் படங்களை தேர்வு செய்து நடித்து வருகிறார். தமிழில் தரமான பேய் படங்கள் பெரிதாக வராத நிலையில், பழைய கதையை பட்டி டிக்கெரிங் பார்த்து வெளியாகி இருக்கும் இந்த படத்தில் ஹன்சிகா முதல் பாதி வரை துரதிர்ஷ்டத்தால் வாடும் பெண்ணாக நல்ல நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி உள்ளார். 2ம் பாதிக்கு மேல் பேய் அவதாரம் எடுக்கும் ஹன்சிகாவின் நடிப்பு பெரிதாக கவரவில்லை. ஹன்சிகாவுக்கு ஜோடி வேண்டுமே என்பதற்காக பிரதீப் ராயன் வந்து போகிறார். பிளாஷ்பேக் காட்சி மற்றும் வில்லன்கள் என யாருமே பலமாக இல்லை.

பிளஸ்: ஹன்சிகாவின் நடிப்பு மட்டும் தான் இந்த படத்தில் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஒரே ஆறுதல் என்று சொல்லலாம். சாம் சி.எஸ். இசை ஓகே ரகம் தான். ஒளிப்பதிவு, லைட்டிங் எல்லாம் பரவாயில்லை. கே.எஸ். ரவிக்குமாரின் உதவி இயக்குநர்ளான சபரி மற்றும் குரு சரவணன் இயக்கத்தில் உருவாகி உள்ள இந்த ஹாரர் படத்தின் முதல் பாதி படத்துக்கு பலமாக உள்ளது.

‘Asvins’ movie review: Vasanth Ravi’s horror film has a half-decent story with impressive scares

Despite the shallow story with tried-and-tested tropes, ‘asvins’ impresses with its technical aspects and as a scary movie that does justice to its genre.

Vasanth Ravi, despite being just three films old, has made it evident that he wants to be affiliated with intriguing scripts irrespective of the genre or the talents calling the shot behind the cameras. After the impressive Taramani and Rocky , he’s back with Asvins , a psychological horror film, and it makes sense as to why he went ahead with the film — it’s got a fascinating premise, immense scope to showcase one’s acting prowess, and is genuinely scary. But whether these attributes come well together to make a well-rounded horror flick is a different question altogether.

Asvins is the story of a bunch of friends who take up the project of shooting an abandoned mansion in the UK to promote it as a black tourism site — tourism involving places historically associated with death and tragedy. The mansion belonged to Aarthi Rajagopal (Vimala Raman), an archaeologist who specialised in religion and ritual, who was found dead along with 15 people she had killed. The moment the friends enter the premises, they awake the otherworldly inhabitant who inflicts horror on the gang. Interestingly, the evil force that tortures these poor souls has an Indian connection and Arjun (Vasanth Ravi) has to “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain” his way out and save his friends.

Asvins (Tamil)

Tamil horror films have almost always had religion and/or mythology at their core while Hollywood’s tried-and-tested tropes are haunted houses or cabins in the woods where a bunch of friends (a minimum of one romantic couple among them) split up to make it easier for the ghost to take them out one after the other. Asvins takes both these ideas and blends them into one. It adopts both desi-rooted fables, religious rituals and containing the evil spirits from disturbing the ones alive, as well as Western satanic customs and symbols to scare the audience. And scare it does!

A hefty portion of Asvins is shot in found footage/POV style and along with dim lighting, eerie sounds and sudden camera moves, the film lends itself well to some brilliant jump scares. For fans of old-school horror and those who frighteningly relish watching it through the gap between their fingers, Asvins has a lot to offer as it’s undoubtedly one of the scariest films Tamil cinema has had in a long time. Only when the film tries to explain the reason behind the supernatural happenings does it falter.

Despite an interesting backstory involving the Hindu deities Ashwini Kumaras that the film narrates in its first chapter— the film is segmented into five chapters — by the time we get back to how it’s connected to the present-day happenings, we are already near the end of the film, causing the climax portion to be rushed. Just like the twist right before the intermission, the hurried unravelling of knots at the end doesn’t make the impression they’re supposed to create. While the concepts of astral planes, duality and dead people staying at an intermediate state aren’t elaborately explained to those who are new to it, those who’ve gotten used to those ideas (thanks to films like Us and the Insidious movies) would find them hardly fascinating. The fact that the film itself resembles classics like The Blair Witch Project doesn’t help much either.

The set-ups to the scares too feel rather too convenient. For instance, apart from the usual use of attics and basements as safehouses for ghosts, and the ‘lights aren’t working properly’ trope, the mansion is said to be far from civilisation and the only road that leads to it floods at night due to high tide, turning the estate into an island. For a story that majorly unfolds over just one night, scenes of brothers bonding, a wife planning on a surprise for her husband, and the team coming together to sponsor their youngest member’s education feel forced.

Aside from the scares, where the film shines is in its technical aspects. The lead cast’s performance is quite good and scenes involving their actions switching from fear and horror back and forth are compelling. After Iruttu , Vimala Raman once again scores in the horror genre despite her limited screen time. After a while, the film completely relies on Vasanth’s character and the actor pulls it off well. As was the case with Tarun Teja’s short film that Asvins is based on, sound designer Vijay Siddharth has done exceptionally in setting up the mood of the film. Despite a story that could’ve been more detailed and fleshed out, Asvins is a technically strong psychological horror film that does justice to its genre and that’s a win in the books of horror lovers.

Guru (Kavin) is an IT professional who is well-known for his dedication to his profession. He gets transferred to the Chennai branch as a Team Lead, where he meets Harini (Amritha Iyer), who is an HR professional. The duo has a past connection, that ended on an unhappy note.

One day, Guru stays overtime at the office in order to complete a project summary. However, he is shocked by the paranormal activities that happen in the office, especially in the lift, that prevent him from leaving the building. Later he finds Harini, who is also stuck on the same floor due to the paranormal activities. How the duo solves the mystery forms the crux of the story.

Script & Direction

Director Vineeth Varaprasad makes a decent debut with Lift , which is definitely a refreshing attempt in the horror genre. The film discusses a subject that is relatively new to the Tamil film industry. The director and his team deserve applause for pulling off a film that majorly revolves around a lift and just two characters, successfully. The horror element has indeed worked out well at most of the parts of Lift , which makes it a decent movie experience.

However, the biggest issue with the movie is that it takes its own sweet time to enter the main plot. Also, the inconsistency in the writing is quite evident all along, as some of the scenes turned out very well while the others just didn't work. Lift solely focuses on the occasional jump scares and thrilling moments right from the moment it enters the main plot and doesn't grow beyond that.

The backstory, that was introduced towards the end of the second half is deeply moving. But it would have kept the audience more invested in the film if it was placed a bit earlier in the narrative. In short, Lift definitely had the potential to be much more.

Performances

Kavin, the actor who made a comeback to films with Lift after a short gap, has delivered an excellent performance. His balanced performance that conveys even the slightest emotions without being overboard, makes his character Guru relatable. Amritha Aiyer has also delivered a mature performance, thus making an instant connection with the audience from the minute she appears on the screen. The rest of the star cast, including Kiran and Gayathri Reddy, are good in their respective roles.

Technical Aspects

S Yuva, the director of photography has created the perfect backdrop for this unusual horror thriller with his stunning visuals. Britto Michael's background score has created the perfect mood for the film. Tapas Nayak, on the other hand, has done a brilliant job with the sound design of the project. Lift definitely deserves to be watched on big screens, especially for its amazing technical aspects.

Lift is an unusual horror-thriller that shines at parts, thanks to great performances by the leads and excellent technical aspects. But the movie definitely had the potential to be much more.

Terror ensues when the spirit of Latha comes in to take revenge on her sister.

With an entertaining climax, this movie is a peach of comedy that will make you burst into laughter. They go to a beach house completely unaware of the fact that it is haunted and once the ghost tries to haunt Nisha the movie takes a super funny and thrilling turn.
