Whether you're a school student or a college student, homework is an essential part of the learning process. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps that can help you get your homework done, the only trouble is knowing which apps are best to download. If you're a student, read on to take a look at some of the best homework apps for Android and iPhone.

Brainly homework help mobile app Search

Do you need help with math, biology, history, or physics? Brainly is the homework app for you. Using the app for homework help is as straightforward as taking a photo, typing, or voice searching the question or equation and then waiting for an answer.

All the answers come from Brainly's online community of other students as well as experts from around the world. However, if you aren't happy with the answers, you also have the option to ask the app's AI tutor, Ginny.

Moreover, you can assist other students with their own homework by answering their questions. Which questions you help out with can be filtered according to school level and subject.

Download: Brainly for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

2. Photomath

photomath math homework helper mobile app solving steps

Unlike Brainly, the Photomath app is a pretty straightforward homework app and has one single core focus—math. Photomath is truly one of the best apps to help you solve math problems , and it works similarly in that you merely have to scan the problem with your phone and the app gives you instant answers.

But Photomath doesn't stop there, the app actually breaks down the entire equation and gives you a step-by-step explanation of how it came to the solution. What's more, you can tap on each step to see an even more detailed animated lesson with voice instructions.

In addition, the Photomath app includes a built-in calculator where you can type the question out instead of snapping a photo.

3. Chegg Study

Chegg study homework helper mobile app

Chegg Study is an app that provides many different homework and study tools on various subjects. If you have a basic question, you can either snap a photo, upload an image, or type it out. On the other hand, you can just scan the barcode of the textbook you're using with your mobile phone to find answers.

Another tool Chegg Study includes is over 500 million free flashcards on subjects like astronomy, business, chemistry, and psychology. Alternatively, you can use the app to create your own set of flashcards.

But the Chegg Study app also comes in handy if you need help with a specific course. All you have to do is add the course and the app provides everything you need to ace it, like expert Q&A and exam prep. Alternatively, there are a selection of Chegg alternatives you can try , too.

4. Course Hero

Course Hero homework helper mobile app solution

To get help with your homework, all you have to do is ask Course Hero. And asking is super simple. You can type in your question, snap a picture, or upload a document. If you're looking for assistance with math homework, there's even a dedicated Scan to Calculate option.

Using the Course Hero app, you can keep a library of all your homework documents and any other learning materials you need if you're completing a course.

What's more, Course Hero is available in your web browser if you need access to AI-powered homework assistance and a range of study resources while using your laptop or PC.

Download: Course Hero for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

5. Bartleby

Bartleby homework helper mobile app textbooks

The Bartley app can solve your math homework problems in a single snap. Yet possibly the best part is the 24/7 homework help from actual tutors. Simply select the subject, type out the question, and add an optional image.

Once you've sent in your question, all you have to do is wait and pretty soon you'll get assistance from an expert with Masters or PhDs. However, there is another way to get homework help and that's by using the Search tab.

Type in what you're looking for, and you can filter through the solutions according to the solution type or subject. Alternatively, you can search for homework help based on the textbooks you're using.

6. ScanSolve

Scansolve AI homework helper mobile app explanation

Quick, uncomplicated, and to the point is what you can expect from this homework app. ScanSolve uses AI to answer your questions and covers subjects like math, English, and science.

As with many of the other apps on this list, using ScanSolve is as easy as taking a picture of the questions you are struggling with. From there, you can either read the explanation of the results or chat with the AI tutor if you're unsure of the answer you received.

Download: ScanSolve for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

7. Homework.ai

Homework.ai AI homework helper mobile app

The Homework.ai app offers homework help using the power of artificial intelligence. Some of the subjects the app covers include art, biology, computer science, math, music, and a selection of languages like Spanish and German.

To get started, choose a subject, type out or audio record your question, and AI does the rest. For a quicker solution, you can simply scan the question using your mobile phone. Keep in mind that everything in the app is generated by AI, so you might need to double-check the answers if you're not 100% sure.

Along with answering your basic homework questions, Homework.ai can help you with language translation, rewriting text, and summarizing text.

8. Zookal Study

Zookal Study mobile app home

If you need homework help immediately, but you'd prefer to get it from an actual experienced tutor instead of AI, then Zookal Study is the app for you.

The best bit is that you won't have to wait hours for solutions to your questions—Zookal promises to deliver in as little as 20 minutes. Zookal keeps track of all your questions and answers, and you have access to a library of online solutions on the Zookal website.

The app centers on one main tool, Ask a Question, which is where you can type out or snap a picture of your homework question. Additionally, Zookal is a study app you can use in any browser with an impressive selection of online tools ranging from test prep and textbooks to flashcards and videos.

We know that homework can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, and can be difficult to complete all on your own. So, what can you do if you’re struggling?

You might try looking online or in the app store! If you’ve already looked around you probably know that there are tons of homework sites for students and homework apps out there that all say they can help you improve your grades and pass your classes. But, can you trust them? And what are the best apps for homework help?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help apps–free and paid . We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help apps
  • The cost of homework help apps
  • The five best apps for homework help
  • The pros and cons of using apps that help you with homework
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using apps that help you with homework
  • Tips for getting the most out of homework sites for students

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

body-magic-wand-cc0

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

body-red-x-false-stop

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

Especially challenging is that many parents struggle to help their children with subject matter that they haven't been acquainted with for years. Photomath is an excellent solution for struggling mathematicians.

Children can scan complex or simple math problems, learning how to solve them with step-by-step instructions. A built-in calculator improves the experience, allowing for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting abilities. Linear equations, logarithms, trigonometry, functions, and basic algebraic expressions are only a few of Photomath's vast capabilities.

Students can practice their instruments along with the charts and diagrams that display on the screen. They'll receive real-time feedback when they miss a note or fall out of tune. Included step-by-step video tutorials are available to show your child how to be proficient in a specific skill set.

Quizlet digital flashcards allow students of all ages to practice and excel at various topics using their smartphones. In addition to basic flashcards, Quizlet offers multiple modes to encourage different methods of memorization.

If your child attends the same class as another student using Quizlet, the two can share flashcards. Those who use the app to study foreign languages can hear keywords spoken to them in 16 languages.

PowerSchool

Parents/guardians can monitor child's education.

Access to handouts, attendance records, etc.

Complicated interface.

Steep learning curve.

Here's an app that both children and parents can enjoy: PowerSchool Mobile. Many school districts use the PowerSchool system to manage grades and reports. If your child's school is a participant, you can use the mobile app to keep a close eye on your child's educational progress.

While not every school offers support for the PowerSchool Mobile application, it is worth checking with your child's teacher to see if the option is available. Depending on how a teacher chooses to use the tool in their classroom, you may also have access to handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

In addition to keeping up with teacher-provided classroom documents and updates, parents can manage what push and email notifications they receive from the child's school. This simple mobile app can help parents become more involved and aware of their children's school performance.

Experience scheduling automation for yourself!

Create a Calendly account in seconds.

If you're a student, you need a system to organize classwork, exams, and life in general. And it's true, there is an app for everything. But there are lots of apps for planning and time management. Which ones make effective school planner apps?

When deciding on a planner app, you should obviously look for one with features most relevant to your life and your schedule. It should have a distinct purpose. And It shouldn't be thought of as a one-size-fits all productivity app . Here are the qualities to look for in a good student planner app:

Visually clean user experience vs. info-dense

Highly customizable vs. highly structured

Integrated with other apps vs. self-contained, with all the features you'll need in one place

Specialized for students vs. transferrable to post-school life

Here, you can check out just a few of the best school planners currently available. Each is highly rated, affordable, and, in several cases, geared specifically toward school and study. And they’re easy to find. Most are available in the Apple App Store or Google Play store for use on your iPhone, iPad, Android, or other smartphone.

7 great planner apps for high school and college students

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with paid upgrades available

Todoist is a project planner and to-do list all in one. Used by companies like Amazon and Disney, and made for everyone from students to executives, Todoist is an app that can carry you through school and beyond.

Although you can pay to upgrade, the free version offers more than most students are likely to need. Todoist includes features that help you:

Enter important details or to-dos in a note-taking section before you forget them

Set up projects for each class and any other activities or hobbies you're involved in

Add "next action" items, so you can always look ahead to your next assignment

Cross items off your checklist without losing them for good

Student planner apps - blog - Todoist screenshot

Other helpful features include due dates for individual tasks and reminders that pop up on your phone or email. You can customize every feature, so you won't get lots of notifications without asking for them.

Todoist also allows you to label tasks. You can label by priority, context (laptop work, library, etc.), or any other system you want to create. You can also indicate recurring tasks, like weekly quizzes, so you never miss an assignment.

2. Microsoft To Do

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with Microsoft account

A reworking of the long-appreciated Wunderlist, Microsoft To Do has continued to evolve its features to make it stand out in the field of student planner apps.

Student planner apps - blog - Microsoft To Do screenshot

One feature that stands out in To Do is that things you didn't check off from previous days stay in the “Yesterday” box. That way you can specifically choose which items to transfer to "My day," and plan a better time for those that won't fit in today's schedule.

To Do allows you to sort tasks into basic lists that you set up, such as "Work," "Home," or "Lab." You can then add subtasks to the items on each list. For example, if your list includes, "Presentation for econ class," create subtasks for "Brainstorm subjects," "Find sources," or other project milestones.

To Do also includes some features that will please visually oriented people. Dark mode is helpful if you're reviewing your day just before sleep or when you first wake up in the morning. You can also change the background for each list, with lots of modern and inspiring designs.

3. Calendly

iOS, Android, and desktop: Free with additional features available on paid plans

Calendly simplifies scheduling with groups and individuals. As group projects have become the new normal, you’ll likely have to set up plenty of meetings with groups and individuals during the course of your time as a student. You can save a lot of time by scheduling and managing those meetings with Calendly.

Here's how it works:

Connect Calendly with your digital calendar, like Google Calendar , Outlook , and others.

Create a meeting request.

Set the parameters. For example, you can let recipients see your availability, so they can pick a day and time, or you can set a day and time and they can either accept it or request a different time.

Select recipients and send.

Calendly will gather responses from the people you want to meet with, and you'll have a meeting set up without the long texting thread that's usually required.

Other helpful features include the options of Round Robin or collective scheduling on the paid plans. If others share their availability, Calendly will show times that work for everyone, so you can pick. Or, you can use its Meeting Polls feature to let people vote on proposed times before setting your meeting . Also, you can set reminders both for yourself and for those who agreed to meet with you.

Calendly streamlines setting up meetings, so you can free up your time and attention for classes and other responsibilities.

Student planner apps - blog - myHomework screenshot

It's formatted for several types of class scheduling, such as block, period, or time-based schedules. myHomework allows you to not only input assignments and add tasks required to complete them, it also allows for prioritizing and categorizing tasks, so you can focus on what's most needed at any given time. You can set reminders for upcoming due dates too, so you don’t miss deadlines by accident (or procrastination).

While you do need internet connectivity to sync with other devices, this homework app still has full functionality even when you're not connected to WiFi. The free version has plenty of great features, but the paid version of this homework planner lets you get rid of ads as well as share assignments, add file attachments to assignments, and switch out your theme.

6. Power Planner

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with paid upgrade available

Power Planner is a well-established student planner app with many of the same features as myHomework and iStudiez, like entering your schedule, keeping track of your GPA, and viewing assignments and exams.

Student planner apps - blog - Power Planner screenshot

Though the app is full of useful features, one element that sets it apart from other similar apps is the responsiveness of the developer. Power Planner is updated regularly, offering continual improvements to its features.

The GPA calculator is more robust in this app compared to others, with its "What if?" feature, which calculates what scores you need on assignments to get an A in a class. It also includes notifications for due dates coming up. The paid version allows you to enter more grades and stores your GPA info from one semester to the next.

3 tips for getting the most from your student planner app

In addition to finding a great app for students, these tips can help you increase your productivity and keep your schedule running smoothly. No matter which app you choose, you’ll get more out of it if you use it alongside smart planning practices.

1. Treat yourself to a semester review

At the beginning of each semester, set aside a couple of hours to prepare yourself and get everything organized in your app and in your head. Make it fun: Take yourself out for coffee, turn on your favorite music, and turn off your texting and other notifications. This is time to get in the zone.

Give yourself time to look through your new app's features and figure out the best way to use them (or customize them) for you. It's helpful to read reviews, as people will talk about the most useful features. It's also an easy way to learn how to use the app.

Gather your syllabi, work schedules, and any other pertinent calendar info. First, enter all your calendar info for the semester. This helps you understand what your weekly schedule will be like. Then create projects or enter assignments (and due dates) for any big projects  your professors already have planned.

For example, the class may require a video assignment due at the end of the semester. Create a task called "plan out video project," and set the due date for around the time you want to begin the project. You don't want to get bogged down in planning the details of all those projects during your semester review. If you stay focused on the big picture, you may have time for more specific project planning at the end of your review session.

This is also a good time to set goals for yourself. Do you want to turn in more assignments on time or participate more in class? Do you want to learn a new instrument or join a team? Get inspired about doing more than just making it through the semester. With a powerful school planner app on your side, this could be your best semester yet — and there's more to that than just getting good grades.

2. Add a weekly review to your calendar

To keep your planner system functional, you have to keep giving it attention. Set up a time every week — about 30 minutes to an hour — for reviewing your projects and planning out your weekly schedule. Make this appointment as set-in-stone as your class times, so you aren’t tempted to put it off.

You can use this time to input any grades you've received if you've chosen an app with a GPA-tracking feature. Make sure that for every project, assignment or exam, you've entered specific tasks to prepare for them as well. You don't want to just remember that you have something due. You want to have a plan for turning in your best work!

This is also a great time to set up meetings you'll need for the week. Use an app like Calendly to send out requests for meetings, so you're not scrambling at the last minute to find a time when everyone can meet.

And don't forget to schedule some rest! One of the best ways to stay motivated and stick with your work is to know you have some quality fun time coming.

3. Plan daily check-ins

Every morning look over your daily schedule and your list of things to do. This usually doesn’t take more than five minutes, but it can do a lot to help you bring your best to the things that are important to you.

Improve your learning through great planning

Choosing the student planner app that’s right for you is a great way of keeping your mind focused and your grades high during the semester. A great app will help you stay on top of your classes and work, especially if you keep your app up-to-date with regular reviews.

A great calendar app can also help you to make the most of the other aspects of your life, for a less stressful, more rewarding student experience. The world needs what you have to give, and these apps can help you give your best.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Homework planner apps for iPhone shootout!

homework apps for iphone

If you're a high school or college student, your iPhone can make a great tool not only for learning, but for keeping track of courses, assignments, and projects. Whether you're in high school or university, the App Store is full of apps to help you succeed academically, and homework planners are no exception. iStudiez Pro, Erudio, and iHomework all offer ways to help you get and stay organized. But which one is best for you?

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: User interface

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: User interface

iStudiez Pro consists of four main sections, Today, Calendar, Assignments, and Planner. The Today tab gives you a look at not only any assignments, quizzes, or projects you have due within iStudiez Pro but a look at your Calendar app appointments and entries as well. It provides a nice way to see everything all in once place instead of trying to coordinate between two apps. You can tap into anything on the Today screen including events from your regular Calendar app to get more info.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone user interface

The Calendar tab is similar to the Today tab but gives you an entire calendar view of what you have coming up as a combined view between anything you have entered in your regular Calendar app and in iStudiez Pro. You can edit the way things show up on the calendar by changing the formatting options in the Settings section of iStudiez Pro.

Along the top of the Calendar view you'll see an option to toggle between Schedule and Assignments. The schedule view will give you a list of what you have going for the day as far as classes and other events in your calendar. Toggling to the assignments tab gives you a detailed view of what assignments you have due for that day. The calendar will also show a small paperclip on any day that an assignment is due.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone User interface

The Assignments tab does exactly what you'd expect it to do, show your assignments all in one place. You can sort things in a few different ways including by due date, course, and priority. Above that you can toggle between current and completed assignments. To bulk delete just tap the arrow button in the upper left and choose the assignments you want to delete, copy, or paste. The copy paste function is nice for assignments that are recurring instead of entering them new every time.

The planner section has three tabs along the top that allow you to view semesters, holidays, and instructors. You can tap into any section and add new data using the "+" icon located in the upper right hand corner. From the semesters tab you can tap into semester to view all the courses you have that semester. Viewing all courses will also bring up grids next to each class showing the days and times you have class. Tapping into individual courses shows the same grid but adds a toggle along the bottom to view assignments for that course as well.

From the main Today screen you can tap into Settings for iStudiez Pro at the top left. Here you have options to edit alerts, change formatting for the calendar, set up syncing, enable/disable grading, and more.

Erudio for iPhone user interface

Erudio treats courses, assignments, and grading differently than iStudiez Pro. Upon launching the app you'll see a gorgeous main screeen with a list of your courses. Tapping into any one of them will give you an overview of that course with information such as the course name, section time, dates and times for that class, current tasks, and completed tasks.

From inside an individual course screen you can also add tasks, mark them as complete, and switch between general task view mode and a view that shows when the assignment is due. Toggling the check mark box at the bottom of this screen will show and hide completed tasks.

From the main Courses screen you can tap the menu icon in the upper left hand corner to see a slide out navigation menu. You'll spend most of your time in this panel. The menu items consist of Timeline, Courses, Tasks, and Gradebook. Underneath these items you've got configuration options for academic terms, locations, and settings.

Before starting to enter assignments and courses you'll need to set up an academic term. After that you can add courses before finally starting to add assignments and projects. The one issue I have with Erudio is that you must enter a section number in order to add a course. It's frustrating and honestly, probably not necessary. Most high schools do not institute course numbers, only colleges. If you're in high school you can, however, just make up a section number.

Erudio for iPhone user interface

The first Timeline tab will show a list of what you have due based on a week view that is divided into subsections for each month. Tapping into a week will allow you to view all the tasks you have due combined with your schedule for that week.

The tasks section does exactly what you'd expect it to do, show all the tasks you have listed for all classes. You can further sort them by course or by due date. You aren't required to assign a due date if you don't want to. The last section is the Gradebook feature. This will give you a list view of all the classes you have set up in Erudio as well as an overall grade. Erudio takes an average of all the assgnments you've input grades for and gives you a percentage for that course.

The settings tab doesn't have too much to configure but you can choose to sync with iCloud or enable Calendar sync which adds all your tasks in Erudio into your stock Calendar app.

iHomework for iPhone user interface

iHomework's layout is more simliar to that of iStudiez Pro and utilizes a main row of icons along the bottom that allows access to all your main functions. By default the tabs along the bottom consist of Work, Reminders, Courses, Teachers, and More. You can tap into the More section and then tap the edit button in the top right corner in order to re-order tabs and drag them around in any order you want. You can change the tabs along the bottom or replace them with other options such as Reading, Completed, Calendar, Types, Sync, and Settings. This gives you more flexibility and customization which will be welcome by many users.

The Work section will show a summary of everything you have assignment wise. iHomework allows you to sort work by day, week, and course. The next section which is Reminders is a place to list things you need to remember to do but aren't technically assignments. Perhaps you need to remember to pick up some books at the book store or buy a new graphing calculator. Reminders is the perfect place to put tasks like these. You can choose to set a reminder but you don't have to for things that aren't time sensitive.

The Courses section in iHomework will show a view of all your courses with the icon you picked to represent that course. Underneath the course title and number you will see a grid showing which days you have that course. Tapping into a course shows the time, date, teachers list, locations, and any other information you've added for that course. You can also toggle along the bottom between course details, assignments, and grading.

iHomework for iPhone user interface

The Reading section is unique to iHomework and worth mentioning. You can add all your course books, icons for them, and then add reading assignments that will aggregate into the Reading section. Once in a reading assignment you can use the page marker feature at the top that looks like a curled page to mark what page you're on. If you're like me and hate curled and crimped book pages, this is a super nice feature. You can also tack on assignments, what pages you need to read, and any bookmarks related to that reading assignment as well.

The other tabs for iHomework are Settings and Sync. Settings allows you to edit icon badges, import or migrate iHomework data, and change sort and other preferences for assignments and reminders.

When it comes to user interface, Erudio has the most appealing interface but iHomework has the most useable and customizable interface. It'll really depend on which is more important to you. From a productivity standpoint, iHomework wins.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Adding terms and courses

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: courses and terms

iStudiez Pro allows you to easily add your terms and courses via the Planner section. Once inside the planner, make sure the Semesters tab is selected at the top and then click the "+" symbol in order to add a semester. You can name it whatever you like and then define the date range. After you're done you can go into a term and add your courses. You can also add holidays and instructors in the same manner.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone managing courses and terms

Once you're inside a term you can click the "+" sign next to the term in order to add more courses. You'll be required to enter a course name and next to it you can pick a color label to assign it. Tapping the Add Class button under the Schedule section allows you to set up times and dates. You can choose between a regular repeating course or a single class. If you choose repeating you'll be asked to put days of the week and meeting times that will repeat each week. If you choose single course you can just assign a date and time to it. If you have a list of exam dates, you can quickly add them from this screen as well. Tapping into any course will then allow you to start adding assignments and other options.

Erudio requires all course information to be entered before you'll be able to start entering assignments. And before you start setting up courses you'll have to pick a term. Tapping on the Academic Terms option under the Configuration section allows you to do this. Just like iStudiez Pro, you can choose time frames for academic terms and give them a short name. Once this is done you can tap into that term and add holidays as well.

Erudio for iPhone managine courses and terms

Returning to the main screen you are now good to go in Erudio to start adding courses. Under the Courses section, just tap the "+" sign in the upper right hand corner to start adding course information. You can give the course a short name and a number. You can add in a website if that course has one for resources as well as set a reminder color. The one thing that really irritates me with Erudio is that you are required to include a section number. Considering you're the only one using the app I'm not sure why this is a must have field. It's nice that they offer it but it shouldn't be required. This alienates high school students and anyone who doesn't have section numbers. You can add a place holder in the event that you don't know or have a section number. Putting a placeholder like 1234 will let you proceed. You can also use this area to turn on and off weighted grading.

Once you've added your courses and returned to the main menu of courses in Erudio you can now start adding assignments and tasks under each course.

iHomework for iPhone managing courses and terms

iHomework has a courses tab along the bottom menu that allows you to easily get a quick view of all the courses you have set up. You aren't required to set up acadmic terms or any other information. You actually don't have an option for terms so if that's important to you and you'd like to have past data stored, you may not like the lack of this feature in iHomework.

To add a course just tap the Add button in the upper right corner. You can name the course and assign times and dates as well as teachers and locations. Locations can use either GPS or you can manually enter the information. Tapping the icon for course will also give you the option of assigning one of many pre-designed icons to it. At the very bottom you can add a course website.

Once you've added all your courses into iHomework you're ready to start entering assignments and tasks.

When it comes to adding courses and terms, Erudio is the most complicated due to the need for section numbers. iStudiez Pro and iHomework are very simliar in format but iHomework doesn't have a terms feature. iStudiez Pro offers the best balance between ease of use and feature set when it comes to adding and managing academic terms and individual courses.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Managing homework, projects, and reminders

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: projects and assignments

iStudiez Pro allows you to add items not only from the Assignments section but the Calendar and Planner sections too. Once you've chosen to add an assignment you can give it a name, choose a due date, choose a notification time, and add a partner. You can change default notifications for assignments, exams, and classes within Settings or you can go with the defaults which are on the due dates or a few minutes before the course starts.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone adding assignments and tasks

Partners will allow you to add someone from your contacts or a new person to an assignment. This is a nice feature for group projects as it gives you easy access to their contact information from directly within the app. Just open the assignment and click on the partner you need to contact and you'll be taken directly to their contact card in your Phone app. Once you're done with an assignment and have a grade to input, you can mark the assginment as done and a grading option will pop up as long as you have grading enabled under settings. You can enter a total number of possible points and the number you earned. iStudiez Pro will automatically give you the calculation in terms of percentage.

Erudio for iPhone adding assignments and tasks

Erudio allows you to add an assignment or task from within any course or the Tasks menu. To add one just give it a name, choose the due date (you don't have to put one if you don't want to), choose a reminder and the course it goes with, and whether or not the assignment is graded. Once you receive a grade you can pop back in and enter what you earned and just like iStudiez Pro and it'll automatically calculate the percentages for you.

Once nice thing that Erudio offers is repeat tasks under reminders. You can choose a repeat for every hour, day, week, month, or year. You can also choose to use location based reminders by ticking location instead of time along the bottom of the reminders menu. You can have the app use a list of places you've already set up or add a location. You can then choose to have the app remind you when you leave or when you arrive at a specific place. Erudio is the only app that offers location based reminders for assignments and tasks.

iHomework for iPhone managing assignments and tasks

iHomework is better at organizing and sorting projects, reading assignments, and other types of tasks within the app. You can add any assignment or project to the work section while you can have other items such as reading tasks under the dedicated Reading tab. Reminders is also a separate section and a great place to put school (or non-school) related things so all your reminders are within one app. Things such as "Pick up a new pair of shoes after Chemistry" are perfect examples of things that iHomework can handle that don't really fit into apps like iStudiez Pro and Erudio.

To add an assignment in iHomework just choose add under the Work section. Fill in the name, choose the course, and then a notification setting. By default it will be set to none but you can choose between many options including minutes, hours, or days before. Once you've completed an assignment and earned a grade you can pop back in and add grades and mark it as complete. You can always see and edit completed assignments under the Completed section anytime.

When it comes to organizing and managing assignments, tasks, and notifications, iHomework provides the most flexibility and fine tuned control.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Syncing and cross-platform support

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: syncing

iStudiez Pro is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad. They also offer a Mac counterpart as a separate purchase. iStudiez Pro syncs directly with iCloud so once you enable sync you're good to go and won't have to worry about whether or not your data is available on all your devices.

Erudio also has a Pro version for both iPhone and iPad but they'll be separate downloads. There is no Mac version so if you want access on your computer, you should probably rule out Erudio as an option. If you're only using iPhone and iPad, Erudio supports iCloud sync natively so all your assignments, courses, and projects will sync seamlessly between them with no effort on your part.

iHomework's app is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad and they also offer a Mac version that is available in the Mac App Store. As far as syncing goes, iHomework unfortunately only offers Wi-Fi sync while on the same network. While it's functional, it's nowhere near as convenient as native iCloud or private server syncing.

When it comes to syncing, iStudiez Pro is the only app that enjoys counterparts for both iPad and Mac as well as full iCloud syncing.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Pricing

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: pricing

iStudiez Pro will only run you $0.99 and will work on both your iPhone and iPad without requiring a separate purchase. If you'd like the Mac version to complete the suite it'll cost an additional $9.99.

Erudio's premium app for iPhone will run you $2.99. If you'd like it for iPad you'll also have to fork over another $2.99 since it's not a universal binary. While there is iCloud syncing, there is currently no Mac version to add to the mix.

iHomework is currently priced at $0.99 in the iOS App Store and is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad. If you'd like to pick up the Mac version, it'll only cost you an additional $0.99 which is a great deal for any Mac app, let alone one with as many features as iHomework offers.

When it comes to cost, it's hard to beat iHomework's $0.99 price tag, especially because it's available for Mac and iOS.

  • iStudiez Pro for Mac - $9.99 - Download Now
  • iHomework for Mac - $0.99 - Download Now

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: The bottom line

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: the bottom line

If you aren't concerned with syncing and only need a homework planner app on your iPhone, iHomework provides the best solution at the most reasonable price. Separate reading and reminders lists make iHomework the go-to iPhone app for staying on top of things. The only thing that keeps us from recommending iHomework as the best homework planner app is its lack of native iCloud syncing -- Wi-Fi sync is a pain.

Erudio does not offer a Mac app and the interface, although gorgeous, lagged during our tests. And then there's that pesky section number issue that can become annoying very quickly.

That leaves iStudiez Pro. If iCloud sync and cross-platform support are must haves for you, look no further than iStudiez Pro. It's got a huge list of features that'll keep you organized and set you up for success not only this school year but every year after that.

Erudio - $2.99 - download now, ihomework - $0.99 - download now.

EduTech: The best iOS apps for keeping track of assignments, due dates, and more

Avatar for Chance Miller

EduTech is a new 9to5Mac weekly series that will focus on technology’s application in education, lower and higher level, both for productivity and enjoyment. If you have suggestions for topics or specific questions you’d like to see answered, feel free to let me know. Catch up on past installments here .

In this week’s installment of EduTech, we’re going to break down the best apps on iOS stay organized, keep track of assignments, and more. Some of these apps are specifically made with education in mind, while others were developed with a broader focus yet still offer benefits to educators and students alike.

This is arguably one of the best applications of technology in education. Keeping track of things like assignments, due dates, and tests used to be a tedious task that required the use of a physical planner to truly stay on top of things. With iOS, however, there are many apps that make it easy to stay on top of your work. Read on for my full list…

The Homework App

One of the most popular scheduling apps on iOS is simply called “The Homework App.” Available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, this app features a minimalistic design that offers support for your class schedule, homework schedule, and more.

homework apps for iphone

On the main screen of the app, you see a broad overview of what you have going on, including the number of classes you have that day, the assignments you have due, your schedule, and more. From there, you can dive deeper into the specifics of what you have going on with sub details for assignments, color coding, and more.

The Homework App also offers a widget in Notification Center, as well as an Apple Watch app for on-the-go tracking. There’s also notification support to ensure you never forget a due date.

The Homework App is free on the App Store .

myHomework Student Planner

This app, while still simplistic, offers a few more customization options than The Homework App. On the home screen of the app is a basic overview of all of the homework you have due, while you can filter it by class, priority, and type.

One thing that sets myHomework apart is its support for classes that occur every other day, like in a college environment. While The Homework App does support this, you have to set up each day individually as opposed to telling the app the alternation schedule. myHomework, however, allows you to choose which days a class occurs rather than assuming it occurs every week day.

myHomework Student Planner offers iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch support. It’s available for free on the App Store .

Class Timetable

Returning to the simplicity over features theme, Class Timetable is an incredibly simple app that allows you to keep track of classes and assignments. The home screen of this app is a simple list of your classes for that day, while a separate Tasks window shows your assignments and when they are do.

Class Timetable is color coded and supports a color coded week view when you rotate your device to landscape view.

While Class Timetable is free, there’s a “Pro” update available via in-app purchase for $0.99. With that upgrade, you get class notifications, timetable export, task reminders, and more.

Class Timetable is available on the App Store and supports iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

My Study Life

My personal favorite planning app is My Study Life. In my testing, I’ve found this one to be the most feature-rich apps available, while also offering a simplistic and easy to navigate design.

One of my favorite features is the “Tomorrow” preview at the bottom of the app’s home screen. This preview shows how many classes you have on the next day, the tasks you have due, and if you have any exams. My Study Life is also smart about handling exam and class interferences, alerting you of the conflict and allowing you to add revision tasks.

You can view your upcoming tasks and classes with month and week views, as well as detailed daily views with building numbers, times, and more.

My Study Life is available on the App Store for free , but there’s no iPad or Apple Watch app at this point.

Fantastical

While this app wasn’t developed with education specifically in mind, it’s still one of the best planning apps available. Available on both iOS and macOS, Fantastical is a beautiful calendar app with cross-platform syncing, Apple Watch support, and iMessage integration.

We’ve covered Fantastical extensively in the past and I continue to recommend it. You can import from other calendar services, sync between your various devices, and much more.

As for education-specific purposes, you can enter assignment due dates, exam dates, meetings, and more.

Fantastical 2 is available for $2.99 on iOS  and $49.99 on macOS .

Another app that wasn’t developed with education specifically in mind, but yet still is one of the best apps for assignment tracking and remembering test dates. OmniFocus is task management app that allows you to enter in a task, assign a due date, and receive notification reminders to complete that task.

The app centers around being easy to use and allowing you to get things done as efficiently as possible. For each day, you’ll see a number that represents the number of tasks that you have due that day.

The app is also location-aware, meaning you can assign a location to specific task and be reminded of it when you approach that location.

OmniFocus is available for iOS, Apple Watch, and iPad on the App Store , while there’s also a macOS app .

Other to-do apps

homework apps for iphone

To-do apps are a great way to remember tasks you have to complete. While OmniFocus is my personal favorite, there are a variety of other options, some of which are free, available on the App Store.

For education, to-do apps are relatively simple and work best for remembering assignments and exam dates rather than class meeting times. For many students, however, assignment and date tracking is the central need.

Below are some additional recommendations for to-do list applications:

  • Remember The Milk
  • Google Keep
  • Apple’s Reminders app

Those are just some of the apps that make it incredibly easy to keep track of assignments, classes, tests, and more. Everyone has their own methodology for tracking such dates and it’s really up to you to find the best app that fits your needs.

If you have any additional recommendations for organizing your school work and schedule, let us know down in the comments.

Scan your homework or documents with iPhone or iPad

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated March 28, 2020

When working or learning remotely, you may need to periodically scan homework or documents to your classmates, teachers, colleagues, or bosses. Or, you may find yourself needing to manually sign and add your signature to official documents. The good news is that you don’t need a scanner! Apple offers a few ways to scan almost anything using just your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and a few of the native iOS or iPadOS apps.

This article focuses on just how to scan any documents or homework on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using the Notes app or the Files app. And it’s pretty straightforward!

With more and more people working or learning from home often with children taking classes from home, you may run into some new problems. These range from getting your desk set up properly to be more efficient while making sure the children have access to everything that is needed.

One instance that may arise is the need to scan your homework or documents and share them with a classmate, teacher, co-worker, boss, or others. Instead of needing to download a third-party app, Apple turned both the Notes and Files app into productivity powerhouse applications where you can do just about everything you need.

Here’s how you can use the Notes app to scan homework or documents.

Here’s how you can use the files app to scan homework or documents., there are also some great third-party scanning apps on the app store, drop us a line, use the notes app to scan your homework or documents.

Although the Notes app has this document scanning feature, you may not know where exactly how or where to find it. Apple has updated the interface of the Notes app itself to give the users easier access.

Open Notes to scan your homework or documents

  • Open the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the  New Note (+)  button.
  • On the toolbar above the keyboard, tap the Camera icon.
  • Select  Scan Documents

From here, you’ll need to line up the document as best as you can, and then tap the shutter button in the camera view. This will snap a quick picture of the document, and then you are given a few options.

The Notes app actually makes it possible for you to adjust the frame of the scan, so you don’t have a bunch of extra stuff in the background. Then at the bottom, there are options to Retake or  Keep Scan .

End result Scan Your Homework or Documents

If you keep the scan, it’s moved to the bottom left corner, and the camera view reappears in the event that you have multiple scans to make. Once all the pictures have been taken, tap the  Save button in the bottom right-hand corner. This adds the scan to the newly-created note and you can then add any other text, charts, or checklists to the Note itself.

Use the Files app to scan your homework or documents

The Files app is also extremely useful and powerful, and you can also scan documents and more directly from the app.

Scan your homework or documents in Files

  • Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • From the Browse screen, tap the icon in the top right-hand corner (circle with three dots).
  • Tap  Scan Documents  from the menu that appears.
  • When the viewfinder appears, line the document up and then tap the Shutter button at the bottom.
  • The scanning editor will then appear, giving you the ability to better lineup the edges of the scan.
  • After tapping Done, you can continue to scan more documents, or just tap the  Save button to save the scan.

Once you have scanned the document in the Files app, you will be asked to select the folder that you wish for it to be saved to. Simply go through the file manager, find the right folder (or create a new one), and tap  Save in the upper right-hand corner.

End Result Files Scan your Homework or Documents

The biggest benefit to this is being able to not only save it to your iCloud Drive instead of just inside of a note.

But if you have already logged into third-party cloud storage solutions like Google Drive or OneDrive, then you can choose folders in those services to save the scanned documents.

In the event that you are sharing this with your teacher or business associate, being able to choose a shared folder is extremely convenient.

Adobe Scan on iOS

Although using the Notes and Files app is great, enough can’t be said for the App Store. There is a slew of applications available that can help you scan documents. Some of these may even be quicker than using Apple’s solution.

Adobe Scan (Free w/ in-app purchases) –  Adobe Scan allows you to scan anything and turn it into a PDF instantly. But the app takes advantage of “Advanced Image Technology” to detect borders, sharpen the image, and recognize text. Once scanned, Scan lets you search the content if you need to find something specific.

Office Lens (Free) –  Instead of automatically determining what you are scanning, Office Lens offers options at the bottom of its scanner. These options include the ability to scan a Whiteboard, Business Card, Document, or just take a photo. And then the scan can be saved to OneDrive or your other favorite Cloud Storage solution.

Evernote Scannable (Free) –  The benefit of Evernote Scannable is its integration with Evernote. Scan a document, and export it directly into Evernote, or send it to colleagues or your teacher via email or text. And Scannable will automatically crop anything you scan, so that you aren’t left with extra space behind documents.

Scanbot (Free w/ in-app purchases) –  Scanbot may one of the more popular options on the App Store thanks to its versatility. You’ll get the standard document/PDF scanning features, but you can use Scanbot to send the document via Fax and more. The app even recognizes QR codes and offers password protection for your PDFs.

Wrapping it up

As a quick note, you’ll see a few controls at the top of the viewfinder when you are scanning. This toolbar gives you the ability to turn flash on or off, adjust the color of the scan, and  Auto . If your phone is set to  Auto , then your iPhone will automatically scan the document as soon as it’s recognized. But if this is something you would rather not have, just tap the Auto button and it will switch to Manual.

The best part about all of this is that it works with either the iPhone or the iPad. So you are not limited to what device you use to scan these and send them off.

Let us know how you manage to share your homework or work with your classmates, teachers, and colleagues.

If you have any questions, let us know in the comments below and we’ll be sure to help out!

College students head to campus with Mac and iPad

An illustration showing students using Apple products in various academic scenarios.

Head Back to School with Apple

MacBook Air shown in Silver and Midnight.

Text of this article

August 19, 2024

This month, students around the world are heading off to college, ready for the next chapter of their academic careers and beyond. As many delve into the intricacies of fields as varied as organic chemistry, the visual arts, and medicine, they’re trusting Apple’s ecosystem of products to power through their days. From creating apps, to taking bio notes, designing presentations, and editing video projects, college students turn to Mac and iPad for their longevity, portability, and reliability.

And with the rollout of Apple Intelligence — the personal intelligence system that puts powerful generative models at the core of Mac, iPad, and iPhone while setting a new standard for privacy — this fall, they’ll have even more tools to tackle the increasing demands of their fields. 1

“My MacBook Air goes with me everywhere I go and excels at all the work I demand from it, whether running AutoCAD to design a new machine, taking notes for organic chemistry, or building my next app in Xcode — MacBook Air unlocks completely new possibilities for me,” explains Brayden Gogis, a rising junior at Taylor University in Indiana and a three-time Swift Student Challenge winner who is studying mechanical engineering and biochemistry.

Research shows that students’ course of study plays a major role in choosing their primary device. In fact, 65 percent said this was an important factor, according to data from Futuresource Consulting. Below, three students majoring in STEM fields share why they have made Mac and iPad their trusted campus companions.

After attending the University of Notre Dame in Indiana for her undergraduate studies, Yoora Jung is now in her second year of medical school at Touro University California in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A longtime user of Apple products, she relies on iPad Air for her studies, and her MacBook Pro for creating content for social media, where she’s earned a sizable following with her inside look at what it’s really like being a medical school student.

“I use iPad Air and Apple Pencil to take handwritten notes using Notability, and to organize lecture materials for effective study sessions,” Jung says.

Jung is also looking forward to the rollout of Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, which can help students rewrite, proofread, and summarize text when tidying up class notes or crafting important emails.

“Apple Intelligence will be a game changer,” Jung says. “Being able to automatically generate summaries of lecture recordings and transcripts will make studying more productive, and help me quickly adjust my notes and emails for tone, in addition to grammar or spelling errors.”

To handle the intensive demands of his medical school curriculum at Central India’s Government Medical College, Nagpur, Anuj Pachhel opted for MacBook Pro. “One aspect I loved was the battery life on the device,” says Pachhel, who will continue his postgraduate studies this fall. “I had e-books for studies loaded on my Mac and used it extensively, and I was in awe of the speed.”

Throughout his undergraduate years, Pachhel documented his academic adventures with iPhone and Mac, earning more than a million followers as he discussed what it was like studying for exams, attending college during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and what he did with his scarce free time along the way.

“The Mac is so powerful at handling challenging tasks,” Pachhel explains. “I particularly love DaVinci Resolve Studio, as it uses many artificial intelligence features that tap the fast Neural Engine of my MacBook Pro, improving my editing speed.”

Across the Apple ecosystem, Continuity features like Handoff and Universal Clipboard help keep students like Brayden Gogis on task as they power through their busiest days on campus.

“The more I use my Mac, the more I get out of it,” Gogis explains. “I can go on my iPhone and see all of my notes for class that I type on my MacBook Air if I want to quickly study, and all of my texts, calendar events, and reminders sync between them. It keeps me organized and on track when I’m being pulled in a million different directions.”

During the school year, his most-used apps include Bear, a note-taking app; the Reminders and Calendar apps for staying on task; and Keynote for creating top-notch presentations. “Keynote has so many features for making a really impressive presentation in the simplest way possible,” Gogis says. “The animations make it a lot easier to communicate organic chemistry mechanisms that look intimidating as a static image.”

As Gogis and his fellow students head back to campus this fall with Mac and iPad, they’re prepared for the semester ahead, and for wherever their academic and future career journeys take them.

Whether students choose Mac or iPad , affordability is key. Apple is celebrating the student experience with a limited-time college student offer in Apple Store locations and online at the Apple Education Store . The offer includes a gift card up to $150 in the U.S. for purchase of Mac or iPad, including the new MacBook Air — the world’s most popular laptop — and the all-new iPad Air .

To add to their savings, college and graduate students, their parents, and all teachers are eligible to receive discounted education pricing year-round and 20 percent off AppleCare+ during this limited-time offer. They can trade in an old device to earn credit toward a new one and take advantage of 0 percent interest financing over 24 months.

To help students narrow in on the perfect laptop, Apple has also launched a new Today at Apple session available for students to take at their local Apple Store, and the “ Help me choose ” service online. Students can also shop with a specialist, who will guide them based on personal college goals, customize features and apps to fit their needs, and explore options to fit their unique budget, in stores and online. For more information, visit an Apple Store or the Apple Education Store online.

  • Users with an eligible iPhone, iPad, or Mac with Siri and device language set to English (U.S.) can sign up this fall to access the Apple Intelligence beta.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is my favorite iPhone ever

Published on August 21, 2024

Now that Pixel and iPhone fans are mad at me, I’ll say it again. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is — by far — the best iPhone ever made. Yes, that means it looks and feels more like an iPhone than ever, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. Instead of trying to take on a multitude of Android rivals, Google went after the most recognizable phone on the market, and I think it’s beaten Apple at its own game in both hardware and software. Here’s why.

Familiar, but better

Apple iPhone 15 Pro camera housing

If there’s one thing Apple gets right year after year, it’s hardware. No, the iPhone might not change a lot from one generation to the next — maybe just a new glass finish or frame polish — but it always feels sturdy and reliable. You could pick up an iPhone from five years ago or the top-end iPhone 15 Pro Max and immediately know where everything is with your eyes closed.

On the other hand, Google hasn’t put out two perfectly matching Pixels, well, ever. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve been a fan of Google’s camera bar design since it launched on the Pixel 6 series — but I’ve watched it change and evolve over the years as Google has slowly learned what makes a phone comfortable (and enjoyable) to use not just pretty to look at. I’ve seen the curved displays and rounded side rails flatten out, and even the signature camera bar has slowly shifted from a true visor to more of a camera island. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the finished product of all that learning, and the result is that it feels exactly like an iPhone.

Don’t take my word for it, though — look at the two phones above. Google has almost perfectly recreated the side rails that Apple debuted on its iPhone 15 series, right down to the antenna placements around the edges. Even better, it did so without switching to expensive, smudge-prone titanium, which probably would have bumped its price a few bucks higher. Instead, Google kept the lightweight, recycled aluminum frame that it’s used for a few years, creating a massive Pixel 9 Pro XL that’s far lighter in the hand than it should be. I have to give Google even more credit, too, as I prefer having the power and volume controls on the same side of the phone rather than Apple putting buttons all around.

Google’s rear panel of satin-finish Gorilla Glass Victus 2 feels decidedly Apple-like, too — and yes, I know Google had a similar panel on the previous Pixel 8 Pro, but this is different. Whereas that curved piece of glass met the aluminum frame with a rounded edge, the new, flat replacement sits tucked inside the frame, making it harder to accidentally damage an edge. The glass itself has just enough texture to contrast against the high-gloss frame, and Google’s color options, like Hazel and Rose Quartz, are much, much better than a few muted versions of titanium. I’d still like to see the return of a two-tone Pixel, but something tells me that’s no longer an option now that the Pixel 9 Pro XL uses a single panel on the back.

Honestly, it feels like Google started by copying Apple’s homework (which is not usually something I support) but found a way to make it better. I don’t think that every phone should look or feel like an iPhone, but Google managed to pull from Apple’s excellent quality standards while still keeping enough pieces of its personality, like the camera bar and one-sided buttons.

AI that’s actually (mostly) ready

Google isn’t just stealing Apple’s lunch when it comes to a refined design, either. It’s also doing its best to push Apple out of the AI race before it’s even entered. The Cupertino-based brand made a big deal about the launch of its Apple Intelligence beta as part of this year’s WWDC keynote, only for Google to one-up just about everything that Apple is still preparing to launch — and you don’t even need the Pixel 9 Pro XL to get access (though it helps thanks to the free year of Gemini Advanced).

Whether it was a long overdue update to its voice assistant or generative imaging, Google had an answer. Apple touted its new, more conversational Siri, only for Google to launch a similar, interruptable Gemini Live with several different voices to choose from. Apple announced an Image Playground where you can generate images based on text prompts only for Google to push its Pixel Studio, which lets you do the same thing — unless you want to generate humans — but adds the power of Magic Editor to the mix. Apple decided to infuse its writing tools with ChatGPT, Google — well, Google actually skipped that one in favor of letting its Gemini model learn and develop over time.

It’s not just the fact that Google is ahead in the present stage of AI development, either — it’s been giving users hands-on access for a year at this point. Yes, Apple Intelligence will probably start landing in hands with the launch of the iPhone 16 series, giving it a chance to catch up, but Pixel fans have been able to try things like Magic Editor and Circle to Search for a year or more at this point. Maybe Apple Intelligence will come with faster adoption as iOS 18 rolls out, but it still has a lot of ground to make up on Google in terms of hands-on testing.

google pixel 9 pro xl studio app 3

Whether or not Apple Intelligence actually catches up to Gemini, Google has certainly caught up to Apple in what used to be a Cupertino special — software support. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is in line for a full seven years of Pixel Updates , which includes security support, major Android versions, and, of course, feature drops to make the phone feel new for years to come. Now that Google is well into the swing of its in-house Tensor development (a very Apple move, if you ask me), it can stretch its support, giving you more value from a phone that costs less than a comparable iPhone and still offers more room for customization.

Speaking of customization, it feels like iOS has begun to pull features from Android rather than the other way around. Apple finally decided to add color-matched app icons and shift away from apps that always float to the top of your screen, proving that maybe it really can learn from someone outside of its own walled garden. Let’s be real, though — Google’s adaptive color palette is much easier on the eyes than the iOS 18 options that look brighter than a box of crayons.

Coming for the video king

homework apps for iphone

Somehow, Google’s most ambitious move to take on the iPhone has nothing to do with its design or growing lead in AI features. Instead, it might be that Google is after Apple’s videography crown. After all, Pixels are already some of the best camera phones , so why not go for one strength that usually belongs to Apple? And yes, Google’s updated approach to video still involves AI, but there’s more to it than that.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL packs a pretty impressive trio of rear cameras, with a 50MP primary sensor backed by 48MP telephoto and ultrawide options, each relying heavily on the Tensor G4 to push impressive results. They’re still excellent for still images (it’s a Pixel, after all), but the update to Video Boost might be Google’s main difference-maker. This year, Video Boost not only processes your clips to enhance lighting, color, and details, but it’s also capable of upscaling video to 8K resolution. Google’s smaller wrinkles, like Pan and Blur, which slow down your clips for smooth sideways pans and add cinematic bokeh around your subject, are just the icing on top when it comes to native capabilities.

Now, I’ll admit that I’m more of a quick-post-to-Instagram guy than a spend-hours-editing guy, so I’m not sure I’ll always have the patience for Video Boost. That said, Google’s straight-out-of-camera stabilization is remarkable, so I don’t think it’ll be a big deal to save Video Boost for special occasions.

Apple might also still have a leg up over Google when it comes to editing footage, at least when you want to do it yourself. The Pixel 9 Pro XL doesn’t let you shoot in Log, making it a bit harder to color-grade even when you do send a clip to your laptop. I know Google trusts its Tensor chip to figure out the right colors for your videos, and they’re usually true-to-life, but the ability to manually color-grade later on would make it easier to get a cinematic feel out of some shots.

Even still, I think the Pixel 9 Pro XL is the best Android phone for shooting videos right now. It has the right blend of excellent hardware and Tensor-assisted software to create clips that are ready to publish right away while also polishing your files for later use. I’ll have plenty of images and clips to share later as part of our full Pixel 9 Pro XL review, too, so stay tuned.

Which would you rather buy: The Pixel 9 Pro XL or the iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Google made an iphone, and i couldn’t be happier.

homework apps for iphone

So, has anyone calmed down yet about the fact that I think Google made a pretty excellent iPhone? No? Some of you are still yelling at your phones that maybe I should just buy an iPhone instead if I like it so much? I tried to explain myself as best I could, but I stand by my point. In many ways, the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro are everything I like about an iPhone, combined with the best thing of all — they aren’t iPhones. I’m a Pixel guy all the way down, but I still respect many of the things that Apple does.

Simply put, the iPhone works, and it works incredibly well. The hardware always feels good, the apps are always well-optimized, and the cameras are simple yet reliable. Google’s Pixel, on the other hand, has always seemed to have one major flaw — the Pixel 4 had terrible battery life, the Pixel 5 was underpowered (but lovable), the Pixel 6 ran hotter than a neutron star, and so on. They had good cameras and clever software wrinkles, but there was always something to undermine my favorite phones. Basically, the iPhone is the iPhone because it just works, and now the Pixel 9 Pro XL does, too.

Ultimately, it feels like Google has finally put two and two together, combining the strengths it already held in terms of cameras and clean software with an updated, top-tier design and lofty AI-powered goals, and the end product is a Pixel 9 Pro XL that feels like it can compete with any phone on the market. If that’s what it takes to make an iPhone out of a Pixel, then I’m in — now, if only it had iMessage (kidding, I promise).

No, but seriously, Google has finally put together a flagship phone in a way I don’t think it ever has before, and you should probably check out the best Pixel 9 prices and grab one.

Trivia Meets Kaleidoscopic Chaos!

Quizzard might just be the hidden gem in the app store, assuming you like your learning served with a heaping spoonful of whimsy and a side of technicolor mayhem. The interface could be described as a unicorn's dream, painted in every hue of the rainbow and then some. It's so cheerfully bright, you'll forget whether you're here to learn or to play a round of digital laser tag. But it’s not all about looks; Quizzard delivers content with a zesty twist that keeps you on your toes. Trivia questions that make your brain do somersaults are the norm here. Ever wanted to decode the molecular structure of caffeine in under a minute or guess Shakespeare's favorite cheese? Quizzard makes such intellectual gymnastics delightful, and you’ll chuckle as much as you'll ponder. Plus, the ads, while frequent, are an adventure in themselves, offering you snippets of the outside world at the most unexpected moments. It’s like getting commercial breaks during your personal game show—annoying but part of the fun. So, strap in for a quiz experience that’s as entertaining as it is enlightening, where every question is a surprise party for your neurons!
GREAT LEARNING TOOL MADE BY A GENIUS DUDE!!! Quizard reads your question and like searches the web for similar information to come up with an answer. Quizard provides a paragraph explanation along with the short answer. READ THOROUGHLY bc it is a computer and sometimes the wording makes it come up with “the wrong (short) answer” even though throughout the (longer paragraph) explanation you can figure out the true answer that Quizard happened to word incorrectly or chose a similar but wrong multiple choice option for. If you’re not trying using it for just the short answer not bothering to read and check the answer and dont read the paragraph then ya.. some of your answers are gonna be wrong. But if it doesn’t give you the right answer it’ll at least provide some explanation to put you on the right path.

DO NOT GET THIS APP!

So, I’m in 4th grade, 4TH GRADE! & IT COULDN’T HELP ME CORRECTLY! So, you know in elementary school papers, & the printer will add these little pictures to the side, well, when i took a picture of this paper, quizard told me that “ I’m sorry, there’s a object in this paper, i cannot tell you the correct answer unless you cover it” ….. IM SORRY! IS A SMALL PICTURE DISTRACTING YOU!? & HOW IS PUTTING SOMETHING OVER IT GOING TO HELP!? Mm!? Well, i cover it, & it is so stupid! It can’t even proofread! It told me that the words that were “incorrect” (by the way, i fact checked it, & the words were correct) & it tells me that the correct answer for gymnasium is “gymnasuim” …i’m sorry, did you just make up a word? WHAT KIND OF AI ARE YOU!? So, i tell it that it’s incorrect, it’s actually “gymnasium” & it tells me, “ I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but can you explain the answer’s to me?” ….. WHY DO YOU THINK I GOT THIS APP!? I mean like, it’s not like I wanted YOU to explain it to me! So, yeah, I'm not going to sit there & waist my time trying to explain a ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAPER TO AN AI! So, I definitely DON’T recommend this app. ( it’s not even worth 1 star )
