How to Archive a Google Classroom Without Losing Important Data

Archiving a Google Classroom is essential for keeping your digital learning environment organized, especially when a school year or term ends. Doing this without losing critical data ensures that all valuable class content, assignments, and student progress are securely preserved for future reference. The process is straightforward yet vital in maintaining order and accessibility.

This guide will show you how to archive your Google Classroom effectively while keeping everything you need intact and ready for retrieval.

Steps to Archive a Google Classroom

1. Open Google Classroom Settings Access the Google Classroom homepage and click on the three dots next to the class.
2. Select the Class to Archive Choose the class you want to archive from the list.
3. Confirm the Archive Action Click on “Archive” and confirm the action in the pop-up.
4. Access Archived Classes Go to the menu and select “Archived Classes” to view them.
5. Restore Archived Classes (If Needed) Click “Restore” to bring back an archived class to your active list.
6. Reuse Content from Archived Classes Select specific assignments or posts to reuse in future classes.

1. Open Google Classroom and Access Settings

Backup Google Classroom

Start by logging into your Google Classroom. The process kicks off on your homepage where all your classes are listed.

1. Sign In to Google Classroom

Head over to Google Classroom and make sure you’re logged into the right account. Your dashboard will show all your active classes.

2. Identify the Class to Archive

Spot the class you want to archive. You’ll see a list of your classes, so take a moment to ensure you’ve picked the right one.

3. Click the Three Dots (More Options)

To the right of each class name, there’s a button with three vertical dots. Clicking this gives you access to several options, one of which is “Archive.”

4. Choose “Archive”

Once you click the three dots, a dropdown appears with options like “Edit” or “Copy.” Select “Archive” and then confirm the action when prompted.

Why It Matters?

  • Tidying Up : End of the semester? Done with the class? Archiving clears your workspace so you can focus on what’s relevant now.
  • Preventing Confusion : It keeps old classes from cluttering your view and makes sure your students aren’t getting lost in outdated assignments.

Keep in Mind

  • Student Access : When you archive, students can still view the class unless you unenroll them. If you don’t want them to have access anymore, unenroll them first.
  • Calendar Cleanup : If assignments were tied to your Google Calendar , those reminders might still pop up. You can hide or delete them to keep things streamlined.

2. Select the Class You Want to Archive

how do you archive assignments in google classroom

Now that you’re in Google Classroom and have accessed the settings, it’s time to choose the specific class you want to archive. This step is simple, but getting it right is crucial.

1. Locate the Class

Scroll through the list of classes on your homepage. Identify the one you want to archive. It’s important to ensure you’re archiving the correct class, especially if you have multiple classes with similar names.

2. Click the Three Vertical Dots

Once you’ve identified the class, click the three vertical dots next to its name. This opens a dropdown menu with various options.

3. Double-Check Before Proceeding

Confirm that you’re selecting the correct class. Once archived, it won’t show up on your active classes list, although it can be restored later.

  • Finished a Course? If you’ve completed a semester or finished teaching a specific subject, this is the point where you archive it to keep everything organized.
  • Too Many Classes on the Dashboard? Archiving is an ideal solution to clear your workspace while preserving content for future reference.
  • Clear Naming : If you haven’t already, ensure your classes are labeled clearly with the semester, year, and subject (e.g., “History 2024 – Term 1”). This makes it easier to pick out the correct class later when searching through archived ones.
  • Review Before Archiving : It’s a good practice to check if there’s any work you need to return or assignments that need grading before you hit that archive button.

3. Confirm the Archive Action

Save Google Classroom data

After selecting the class you want to archive, the next step is to confirm the action. This is the moment where you officially archive the class and ensure everything is securely stored away.

1. Click on “Archive”

Once you’ve clicked the three vertical dots and selected “Archive” from the dropdown menu, a confirmation pop-up will appear.

2. Review the Pop-Up Information

The pop-up will inform you that once a class is archived, it can no longer be actively edited or accessed in the main dashboard. However, it’s still safe in your archived classes and can be restored anytime.

3. Confirm the Action

Click “Archive” in the confirmation box to proceed. This final click completes the process, effectively removing the class from your active view.

Why it Matters?

  • No Going Back : Archiving a class is reversible, but double-checking before confirming ensures you don’t accidentally archive a class you’re still actively using.
  • Class Organization : Once archived, the class is moved to a separate section, making it easier to keep your active classes organized and focused.

Quick Reminders

  • What Happens Next : The archived class will no longer show up on your Classes page, and students won’t be able to unenroll themselves. All class content, including posts and assignments, remains intact in the archived section.
  • When to Use This Feature : This confirmation step is particularly useful at the end of a school year, or when you want to store away a class you no longer need immediate access to.

4. Access Archived Classes

Google Classroom archived classes

Now that your class is archived, knowing how to access it when needed is essential. Archived classes are safely stored but are no longer visible on your main dashboard. Let’s dive into how you can view and manage these classes.

1. Open Google Classroom and Access the Menu

On the Google Classroom homepage, locate the three horizontal lines (Menu) at the top left corner of the page. Clicking this will open a sidebar with various options.

2. Select “Archived Classes” from the Menu

In the sidebar, you’ll see an option labeled “Archived Classes.” Click on it to reveal all the classes you’ve previously archived.

3. Browse Your Archived Classes

Once you’re in the archived section, you’ll see a list of all the classes you’ve stored away. Each class will still have all its content intact, from assignments to announcements.

Why is This Step Important?

  • Efficient Organization : You might archive a class, but you don’t want it lost. This step ensures you can quickly retrieve any class content when necessary, especially if you want to reference old materials or assignments.
  • Reviewing Past Classes : Archived classes are often revisited when planning new lessons or preparing for similar topics in future courses.

Tips for Easy Access

  • Label Your Classes Clearly : Clear naming helps when you’re sifting through archived classes. If you archived a lot of classes, a consistent naming system (e.g., “Biology 2023 – Term 2”) will save you time.
  • Unarchive When Needed : If you need to bring a class back to active status, there’s an option to “Restore” it from the archived list, making it available for active use again.

5. Restore Archived Classes if Needed

Restore Google Classroom data

If you ever need to bring back a class from the archived section to active status, Google Classroom provides an easy way to do so. Whether you need to access old assignments, review student work, or reuse materials, restoring archived classes is simple and quick.

1. Go to the Archived Classes Section

On the Google Classroom homepage, click on the menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner. From the menu, select “Archived Classes” to view all the classes you’ve stored away.

2. Locate the Class You Want to Restore

In the archived section, browse through the list until you find the class you want to bring back. Clear naming helps here, so you can quickly identify the right one.

3. Click the Three Dots on the Archived Class

Once you’ve found the class, click the three vertical dots next to its name. A dropdown menu will appear with the option to “Restore” the class.

4. Select “Restore”

Clicking “Restore” will instantly move the class back to your active classes list. All content, assignments, and student data will be available as if the class had never been archived.

When to Use This Feature?

  • Reusing Past Materials : Teachers often restore archived classes when planning for a new semester or if they want to reuse specific assignments, resources, or lesson plans.
  • Reviewing Historical Data : Need to check how students performed in a previous class? Restoring gives you full access to grades, feedback, and other valuable data.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Unarchiving Doesn’t Change Student Access : If students were previously unenrolled before archiving, they won’t be automatically re-enrolled when you restore the class.
  • Reorganize After Restoring : Once restored, consider whether the class needs any updates or if certain materials should be refreshed before using them again.

6. Reuse Content from Archived Classes

How to Reuse Content from Archived Google Classroom

Once your class is archived, one of the most valuable features is the ability to reuse its content. Whether it’s assignments, posts, or announcements, Google Classroom allows you to efficiently bring past resources into new classes without needing to recreate everything from scratch.

1. Go to the Class Where You Want to Reuse Content

First, navigate to your active classes. Open the class where you want to pull in content from an archived class.

2. Click the “Reuse Post” Option

In the class, click the “+” button (Create) and select “Reuse Post” from the dropdown menu. This allows you to pull posts, assignments, or announcements from any of your archived classes.

3. Select the Archived Class

A list of all your classes, including archived ones, will appear. Scroll down and choose the archived class containing the content you want to reuse.

4. Pick the Specific Post or Assignment

Once inside the archived class, you’ll see a list of all posts, assignments, and announcements. Select the one you want to reuse, and it will be copied into your active class.

5. Edit and Customize if Necessary

After reusing the content, you can edit the details, due dates, and any other information before assigning it in your new class. This flexibility saves time and ensures the material is updated for the current term.

Where Is This Useful?

  • Teaching Similar Topics Again : If you’re covering the same unit in a new semester, reusing posts and assignments lets you quickly reintroduce tested resources.
  • Adjusting for Different Classes : You can tweak reused assignments to fit the needs of different student groups without starting from scratch.

Key Benefits

  • Time-Saving : Reusing content is a massive time-saver, especially if you’re teaching multiple classes with similar curricula.
  • Consistency Across Classes : It ensures you maintain consistency in the quality of resources, making lesson planning more efficient.

Archiving a Google Classroom is a simple yet crucial process for keeping your digital space organized while preserving essential materials for future use, like on Quizizz . By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can confidently archive classes, access them when needed, and reuse valuable content without any hassle.

What happens to an archived Google Classroom?

When you archive a class, it will be archived for all students and teachers that have been added to that class.

Once archived, the class will be placed in a separate area to preserve its contents. This includes uploaded materials, student work, and posts. The class won’t appear as active on the main Home screen anymore.

Teachers and students can still access the class materials via Google Drive. This includes attachments for assignments or other student work.

While teachers and students can still see the archived class via Google Classroom, it will need to be restored before you can start using it as before.

Can I archive a class as a student?

As a student, you don’t have the option to archive a class. Note that you won’t be able to unenroll from an archived class, either. If you need to do that, you’ll have to reach out to the teacher or your school’s administrator and ask them to restore the class temporarily so that you can unenroll.

What is the difference between archiving a class and deleting one?

Deleting a class means you will no longer have access to it. All class posts and comments will be deleted, although students can still access your class files in the class Drive folder. Deleting is permanent, as there is no way to undo deleting a class. Therefore, we recommend using this option only if you’re absolutely sure that you’ll never use this class again.

In contrast, achieving a class means you can still view it. It’s stored in a separate folder in your Google Classroom, and you can always restore it back to full functionality if you need to.

How to archive a Google Classroom as a student

Published on March 7, 2023

Google Classroom is one of many platforms for students to manage their classwork, assignments, and group projects online. As a student, you may want to focus on your current courses in your dashboard while keeping a record of your completed classes or courses for future reference. Archiving a Google Classroom does just that: it removes the course from your active classes page and stores all those course materials elsewhere for you to access.

The ability to archive a class depends on whether or not the teacher has granted relevant permissions, so sometimes, as a student, your only option is to unenroll from the Google Classroom if you want to remove it from your homepage. If you do have the option, we’ll show you how to archive a course, what happens when you archive a class, and how to restore or delete archived courses.

QUICK ANSWER

To archive a Google Classroom, click the three-dot icon on the class and select Archive.  You can find your Archived Classes from the main menu, where you can restore or delete them.

If you don't see the option to archive the course, contact your teacher or Unenroll from the course instead.

You can find your Archived classes from the main menu of your Classroom homepage.

All students in archived classes will still be able to view and access the class materials and assignments, but they won’t be able to post new comments or submissions.

Additionally, all archived classes are removed from your Google calendar, and the class code will be disabled, meaning no new students can be added to the class.

If you want to delete a class entirely, you must archive it first. Note that only the primary teacher can delete a course; students or co-teachers cannot delete courses.

Alternatively, you can restore archived classes to see the class card again with your current courses. That way, you can use its posts, assignments, comments, and materials again.

To delete or restore an archived class, navigate to the Archived classes page from the main menu and select the three-dot icon on the course. You’ll then see options to Restore or Delete the class.

If you can’t archive a class, it might be because you are not the owner of the course or do not have the necessary permissions. Contact the owner of the course or your teacher for assistance.

Archiving a classroom is a personal preference, but it’s a good way to keep all your class materials organized and easily accessible. It also helps to declutter your active classes list and makes it easier to focus on your current classes.

How to archive a Google Classroom on a computer or mobile device when you no longer actively need it

  • You can archive a class in Google Classroom on desktop and mobile using the Archive function in the Settings menu.
  • When you archive a Google Classroom, everything in the class will be preserved, but it won't appear on your Classes page and students can't unenroll from it.
  • You can also restore or permanently delete your Google Classroom on desktop and mobile.

As the end of your term or semester rolls around, consider archiving your Google Classroom. A feature available only to teachers, archiving is a way to keep you organized and preserve materials as you move on to a new section or other courses.

Archiving is a way to file a class and its materials away without permanently deleting it. You and your students will still be able to access class materials, but the class won't show up on your Classes page. Instead, you can find it in the Archived section of your Google Classroom menu.

Note that if you haven't archived any classes, you won't see an "Archived" option in the menu. And if you need to, you can reactivate the course later on through the restore function, or delete it permanently.

Here's how to archive, restore, and delete a class on Google Classroom.

How to archive a class in Google Classroom

1. Go to classroom.google.com or open the Google Classroom app.

2. Click the three vertical (or horizontal) dots in the top right of the class card for the course you want to archive.

3. Select "Archive."

4. Choose "Archive" again in the pop-up window to confirm.

5. To find the class that's been archived, select the stacked-line icon on the top left of the "Classes" page.

6. Click "Archived classes."

How to restore or delete an archived class in Google Classroom

1. Go to classroom.google.com or open the Google Classroom app.

2. Select the three-lined settings menu icon in the top right of the screen.

3. Choose "Archived classes" from the list.

4. On the archived course's card, click the three dots, and choose "Restore" or "Delete."

5. To confirm the restoration or deletion, click "Restore" or "Delete" again.

Archiving versus deleting a Google Classroom

When you archive a course, it will be stored in a separate area of Google Classroom and won't appear in your active classes. Class materials, work, and posts will be preserved, allowing students to still view and access them while not being able to update them.

Students won't be able to unenroll from an archived class, and the class will still show up in Google Calendar for both teachers and students. You can then remove it from Google Calendar or delete the class permanently . Unless you delete the class, it will remain in your archived list. You can then restore it to active status if necessary.

Deleting a course is only available to the primary teacher, with co-teachers unable to perform the action. You must also archive a class before you can delete it.

How to Archive a Google Classroom: Step-by-Step Guide

Archiving a Google Classroom can be a handy way to keep your digital teaching space organized. It’s like putting all your old schoolwork in a box at the end of the year. But instead of a box, it’s a digital archive. And instead of your schoolwork, it’s all the assignments, discussions, and materials from your Google Classroom. So, if you’re ready to tidy up your virtual classroom, here’s a quick guide on how to do it.

Step by Step Tutorial: How to Archive a Google Classroom

Before we dive into the steps, let’s understand what archiving a Google Classroom does. It removes the classroom from your active list but keeps all the content safe and sound. You can still access it later, but it won’t clutter your current teaching space. Ready? Let’s jump in.

Step 1: Sign in to Google Classroom

First things first, you need to be logged into your Google Classroom account.

When you sign in, make sure you’re using the account that has the classroom you want to archive. You can’t archive a classroom if you’re just a student or a co-teacher in it—you have to be the main teacher.

Step 2: Choose the Classroom You Want to Archive

Look for the classroom you want to tidy up by archiving it.

Remember, once a classroom is archived, you won’t see it in your active classrooms list. But don’t worry, it’s not gone forever! You can still view all the materials and work later.

Step 3: Click on the ‘More’ Menu

Find the ‘More’ menu, which is usually three dots stacked on top of each other.

This is where the magic happens. The ‘More’ menu is like a treasure chest of extra options for your classroom. Make sure you click on the right one for the classroom you want to archive.

Step 4: Select ‘Archive’

In the menu, you’ll see an option to ‘Archive.’ Go ahead and click it.

It’s like telling your classroom, "Okay, you’ve done your job. Now it’s time to rest." But just like a superhero, it can always come back when you need it.

Step 5: Confirm Your Decision

A pop-up will ask if you’re sure about archiving the classroom. Confirm it, and you’re done!

Think of it as the last goodbye before your classroom goes into hibernation. But just like bears, it can wake up and be active again if you decide to restore it.

After you complete the action Once you’ve archived your Google Classroom, it’s not visible in your active classrooms list anymore. But don’t worry, it’s still there, just in a different spot. You can find it under the ‘Archived classes’ section if you ever need to go back and grab something.

Tips: Archiving a Google Classroom Successfully

  • Be absolutely sure you’re done with the classroom before archiving it. It’s like packing away winter clothes—you don’t want to do it too soon.
  • Let your students know that the classroom will be archived. It’s like the end of a school year; everyone should be on the same page.
  • Double-check that all grades and assignments are finalized. Imagine leaving a textbook in a locker over the summer. You don’t want to do that with important work.
  • Know that you can restore the classroom if needed, but it’s a bit like digging through the attic. It’s easier if you don’t have to do it often.
  • If you archive a classroom by mistake, don’t panic! You can unarchive it, just like finding a lost toy under the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can! It’s like having a key to a storage unit. You can always go in and get what you need.

Can I unarchive a Google Classroom?

Absolutely, you can bring it back to life anytime you want. It’s like a TV show coming back for a new season.

Will archiving a class affect my Google Drive?

Nope, all your files stay put in your Google Drive. It’s like moving furniture around in your house. The stuff is still there, just arranged differently.

Can I delete an archived Google Classroom?

Yes, but be careful—that’s like shredding old papers. Make sure you don’t need anything from it first.

  • Sign in to Google Classroom.
  • Choose the Classroom you want to archive.
  • Click on the ‘More’ menu.
  • Select ‘Archive.’
  • Confirm your decision.

Archiving a Google Classroom is a straightforward process that helps keep your digital teaching space neat and manageable. It’s like a digital spring cleaning for educators. You may choose to only archive a Google Classroom (and not delete it) at the end of a term or semester, so you can preserve the learning materials and keep them organized as you move to other courses.

Note : Only a primary teacher can delete a Google Classroom.

What Happens When You Archive or Delete a Google Classroom

You can archive or delete a class when you’re done with it, but there’s a difference between these two actions.

Archiving a class is like “deactivating” it, so it’s dormant and unused. The class won’t appear in your active classes but still exists in a separate area of Google Classroom.

Plus, archiving a class will preserve your work — all class material, attachments, posts, and comments — in the class so you or your students can view and access them. However, they can’t update the materials or unenroll from the archived class.

You can also remove or delete a Google Classroom permanently. Unlike archiving a class, which can be done by a teacher or co-teacher, only the primary teacher can delete the Google Classroom.

Restore an Archived Google Classroom

If you restore the class (that hasn’t been deleted) and use all the materials, posts, assignments, and comments again.

  • Open Google Classroom on your computer or mobile device and select or tap Menu .

Archive Your Google Classrooms To Keep Everyone Organized

Archive Google Classrooms

Published: November 17, 2022

When you’re wondering what to do with an old Google Classroom, make sure not to delete it. Deleting it is a permanent action so instead, archive it! That way its content will be preserved. Archiving is the best way to streamline your Classrooms and de-clutter your Google Classroom views. It’s also helpful for students to have their classes archived as well so that they don’t see old assignments showing up on their to-do lists or in their day-to-day workflows.

The most common time for archiving a Google Classroom is at the end of the school year, or at the end of the term. Often, administrators archive classrooms on teachers’ behalf, to save them the trouble and to keep the overall workspace organized. Teachers can also manually archive a classroom if they need to with just a few clicks .

Archiving checklist

Here are some things to consider before you archive your classes:

  • Name your classrooms clearly so that you can easily identify them later.
  • Return any outstanding student work so that your Drive is not cluttered with students’ documents.
  • If you use the Google Calendar function for assignments, hide any archived classrooms from your calendar.
  • If you don’t want students to have continued access to an archived class, unenroll them. Think carefully before doing so because then they will lose access to their assignments and materials.

Archived classrooms can be viewed and restored , and they’re technically available, but they’re not meant to be easily accessed. For teachers and students, archived classrooms are effectively hidden away in “storage.” This is usually fine, except that archived classrooms usually contain valuable content that teachers want to reuse.

Reusing content from archived classrooms

Copying classrooms is one way to reuse content, but it’s not the most optimal because it copies everything. You can also reuse a post from an archived classroom directly in Google Classroom, but it comes with limitations.

Instead, use Schoolytics to search and reuse assignments from any Google Classroom, whether it’s active or archived. This flexible option is user-friendly, and comes with the additional ability to share with other teachers too!

Create a List of Your Assignments in Google Classroom

Every year is a new opportunity to be better than you were last year. This is one of the advantages to teaching, unlike any other profession we get a fresh start every year. The kids from last year are not the same as the kids from this year. The technology possibilities are different. New research has emerged to help us to teach students better. We’ve interacted with other educators and stolen new ideas. We’ve reflected on our own practices and have new ideas. Do not just reuse a class, REVISE!

I’ve created an Add-on script to allow you to review all of your assignments from a class in a single list. This is super handy for helping you plan for next year. What do you want to keep? What do you want to redo? Update? Ditch? Do you want to teach it in a different order? See below for directions on the Add-on. Note: I have a newer template version alicekeeler.com/reusegc that you might like better.

Google Classroom online workshop

Do Not Be Filing Cabinet Guy

My teacher credential program warned us not to be “filing cabinet guy” who has all their work photocopied and ready to go before the kids even walk in the door. Are we distributing information or teaching and interacting with kids? The new group of kids we will see in the Fall SHOULD influence changes in our lesson plans.

[tweet]Don’t be filing cabinet guy[/tweet]

Dr. Fred Nelson at California State University Fresno teaches in Kremen School of Education. One thing he emphasizes is the importance of getting to know your students first thing so you can use that information to design and guide your lessons for the year.

Avoid “Copy Class”

[tweet]WARNING: Copying classes in Google Classroom will make a giant mess of your Google Drive and turn you into Filing Cabinet Guy![/tweet]

On the class tiles page of Google Classroom is the ability to click on the 3 dots of a class and choose “Copy.” What it does not come with is a warning that it will not only copy all of your assignments, it will copy all of the “attachments.”

there are no attachments in google classroom

“Attachments” are links from Google Drive. Copying “attachments” will copy your screenshots, copy your directions documents, copy your videos, copy your collaborative documents that are typed on by last years students, copy your templates…. YIKES!

Copies kill collaboration!

When you search Google Drive for a file from last year, how many copies of the directions document do you want? NONE! You only want the original. If you make edits to the document from 1st period you want 2nd, 3rd, 4th periods to also get the edits. This is the beauty of Google Apps! ONE VERSION, everyone on the same page.

While it can seem tedious to reuse your assignments from last year one at a time, it makes you a better teacher. In the new class, on the Classwork page, click on “Create” and choose “Reuse post.”

Select an assignment from last year’s class, even if it’s archived, and remember NO COPIES!

When the reused post comes up you it opens up in edit mode! THIS IS AMAZING! With other online platforms I always had the intention of updating the assignments but push comes to shove I often did not. With Google Classroom I have to at least for a moment consider… is this assignment designed for THIS year’s students? Could it be better? (Trick question, the answer to that is DUH. No matter how awesome it was it can always be better.)

Reuse an assignment in Google Classroom

  • Assign to multiple classes if you have more than one section of the same class.
  • Renumber the assignment. My best Google Classroom tip is to number your assignments with a hashtag. It is possible that the reused post is no longer the same number as last year. Edit the title and change the number.
  • In my reused post my first “attachment” is a collaborative spreadsheet from last year. Students can edit file. It has student responses all over it! Click on the title to EDIT the collaborative spreadsheet. It will open in a new tab. Use the File menu and choose “Version history” to reset the collaborative document to what it looked like before students collaborated on the document. You will also want to rename the title of the document to reflect the new assignment number.
  • Notice one of my “attachments” from last year is a video. Videos should not be copied!
  • My 3rd “Attachment” is a Google Doc in VIEW mode. This is a directions document. You only need ONE directions document in your Google Drive for an assignment. Click on the title to launch the directions document and edit for any updates for this year.
  • Not shown is an “attachment” to make a copy for each student. You don’t want copies of that template either. If you click on the title of the “attachment” you can modify the template before it is copied for students.

Template for List Classes

When planning for the new class it can be helpful to reflect on what you assigned last time. Think through how you want to reorder and what you want to change. Of course you would want a spreadsheet for this! The Add-on script will allow you to create a list of all the assignments from last years class and you can add a column to make notes. Review the assignment. Think through the redesign.

Create a copy of the spreadsheet template. Wait for the “List Classes” menu to load. This can take up to a minute depending on internet speed.

Choose “List” from the drop down menu. You will need to authorize the Add-on to give YOURSELF permission to access your Classroom classes and Google Drive documents. It is possible you will see a screen of doom asking you to return to safety. Google is covering their behind to let you know that zero people from Google have reviewed my code. Instead, click on the tiny words “Advanced” and below that click on “Unsafe” (it’s safe, I coded it myself.)

Click on Advanced not on "back to safety"

This will create a list of all your current and archived Google Classroom classes.

I initially wrote this Add-on script to allow me to delete classes I no longer use and do not need to reuse posts from. To make it challenging to accidentally delete a class I force you to single click on the Course ID of the class you want to select.

List Assignments

Use the “List Classes” menu to “List Assignments.” This will create a new tab for the class whose Course ID you selected. All of your published assignments will be visible. A live link to the assignment is in column A to allow you to review the entire assignment.

Multiple Classes – Same Spreadsheet

You can reuse this same spreadsheet indefinitely. Find the tab with the list of classes and single click on the Course ID. Go to the “List Classes” menu and choose “List Assignments” again. A NEW tab will be created with the assignments for that class.

Since every year is a different set of students and I do different things I find it helpful to find multiple years of the same class and list out the assignments. Sometimes I did not do something last year that I did 2 years ago but want to revisit. It’s just nice to see the evolution of the class in lists.

How to Delete Multiple Tabs in Google Sheets

5 thoughts on “ google classroom: a guide to reusing old assignments ”.

I like the idea of making a spreadsheet that lists all of the assignments from my Google Classroom. Thanks for the Add-on script.

Can it go the other way, too? From spreadsheet to Classroom? That’d be a great option! Make a spreadsheet, then send information to GC.

Thanks for all you do.

Not unless you code it.

The coding doesn’t seem to be working the way it should and there doesn’t seem to be a way for me to leave screenshots. I’ve gotten one class to show up with all the assignments in a new tab but when I click on any of the other course ids in my second tab (which has all the classes listed), i get these error messages: “TypeError: Cannot call method “getDataRange” of null. Details. Dismiss.” When I click on “details”: “Message details, TypeError: Cannot call method “getDataRange” of null” OK”

Suggestions for retrieving the rest of my classes?

Also, I’m trying to figure out what some of the other columns are: “topic id” vs “ids” and the attachments section just looks really messy and I’m tying to determine how to use it better. I read in one of your blogs that you can edit the attachments or find the original or something along those lines but not really seeing the connection here.

Your notes section states: This spreadsheet is REUSABLE! Pin it in your browser to interact with Google Classroom all year long! Make one per class you teach. NOTE: Alice Keeler keeps making updates to this code. Every so often make a new alicekeeler.com/listclasses to take advantage of new features.

How do you suggest “interacting with GC all year”? You say to make one for each class but later you said you could have one spreadsheet for all your classes (which I personally like, if I can get all the tabs to get set up properly, of course). When you say “every so often make a new [one]”, how often and how would that affect the old one? We can’t simply update the coding from the original doc? What types of new things are you doing and where will we find the info?

I love the things you’re been teaching me but sometimes there are a few gaps in my brain so thank you for taking the time to answer questions on top of your other workload.

I am getting an error that I don’t know how to troubleshoot. Any suggestions? Thank you. API call to classroom.courses.courseWork.list failed with error: courseld: Course ID is required I don’t see the Course ID heading on the GSheet. I do have an empty column.

You have to first set the class. It makes the stripe (row) green
