So, let's say your roommate is on her 4th hour of TikToking with no headphones on in the living room. ...or maybe you have THE cutest dog in the universe that naturally, he’s the ultimate distraction. ...or the kids are singing the Paw Patrol theme song at the top of their lungs, over and over. ...and when you absolutely can NOT work from home any longer? ...or maybe you simply need a cup (or 3) of coffee? Whatever the case may be, sometimes we need to switch up our environment in order to focus and get some work done. 

Homework, monthly reports, and email inboxes around Tempe be warned... you're about to be *DUN DUN DUN* ... studied, completed and cleaned up.  Here are 10 spots you can hit up around Downtown Tempe to get your focus on and squash those tasks.  

2. Snakes & Lattes

When you can't just leave the kids at home, take them with you to this ultra-cool board game/coffee shop stop. Set up the kids with a board game (or six, they have over 1,000 borad games in the shop) at one table and set up your work station (free WiFi!) at another.  Treat yourself to a Nutella Latte or a Chocolate Cold Brew and an order of soft pretzel sticks or fried elote corn for the kids and you're all set. And don't be surprised if you find yourself searching the Game Library for your childhood favorites - Game of Life anyone?  Yep, they've got it!

3. Romancing the Bean A charming Coffeehouse Cafe, Romancing the Bean is tucked away at the base of one of the blue glass towers at Hayden Ferry Lakeside. Louann and Robert Withers chucked their corporate jobs years ago and created this oasis featuring daily specials featuring varietal coffees, flavored teas, soups, and sandwiches. Throw in a selction of baked goods to die for and views of Tempe Town Lake within walking distance and you'll fall in love with this bean!

4. Cup of Joe Market Cafe

Located in the Westin Tempe on 7th Street and serving Starbucks coffee, baked goods, salads and healthy sandwiches, Cup of Joe will soon be your new go-to. Sit outside on the front patio or do one better and head up to the rooftop for Skysill Lounge and the best views of downtown Tempe and the Valley - amazing!

5.  Original ChopShop Co. You’re going to want to check out ChopShop’s patio, which is perfect for group study sessions and brainstorming. With a front “porch”, string lights, and your choice of everything from wine to espresso, PLUS good-for-you food, you’ll quickly understand why ChopShop is so loved!

7. WFM Coffee Bar at Whole Foods Yes, Whole Foods. Grab a cup of Joe, a bottle of Kombucha, or an IPA from the beer wall and head upstairs above the check-out stands to the open air patio. Great people watching and room to get your work done. Bonus: pick up dinner from the hot bar before you head home. #Winning 8. College Avenue Commons at Sun Devil Marketplace Located at the corner of 6 th Street and College Ave, this public space is such a beauty, great for those days when you just need to be outside. With four-person tables and chairs under a glass canopy, this area is good for group study sessions, or for solo study. Tempe, Arizona – a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.

As my college town and a city where I spent some of the most formative years of my life, Tempe will always feel like somewhat of a second home to me.

But to people who don’t know Tempe as well as me, it’s easy to think to yourself:

Tempe, AZ is a vibrant city full of things to do, see, and visit, I’m excited to share some of my favorite things about this amazing city with all of you!

From the amazing food options to the beautiful hiking trails, there’s something for everyone in Tempe. Whether you’re into outdoor activities or prefer to spend your time indoors, you’ll find plenty of things to keep you busy during your visit.

1. Desert Botanical Garden

Think that Tempe is just tumbleweeds and cacti? Think again!

This desert city is home to the world-renowned Desert Botanical Garden, which features more than 50,000 plants worldwide. Visitors can learn about the different plant life through educational programs and classes, or simply take a stroll through the scenic gardens. In addition to the wide variety of plant life, the gardens are home to multiple walking trails, a gift shop, and a café.

One of my personal favorite parts of the Desert Botanical Garden is the butterfly pavilion, which is home to hundreds of different species of butterflies! As you walk through the pavilion, you can watch the butterflies flutter around you, and maybe even have one land on you!

Desert Botanical Garden also showcases several rotating exhibits and art installations throughout the year. Past exhibits include sculptures made of recycled materials and photos of the night sky.

Their current exhibit, Guelagetza, celebrates the indigenous culture of Mexico’s Oaxaca state with music, dance, and food. No matter what time of year you visit, there is always something new to see at the Desert Botanical Garden.

The Desert Botanical Garden is definitely one of the most popular Tempe attractions and a must-visit if you want to explore the beautiful scenery of the Sonoran Desert. The garden is open from 7 am to 8 pm daily, and admission tickets can be booked online in advance.

If you love spending time outdoors and exploring different types of desert plants, add this place to your Tempe itinerary!

2. Papago Park

Another one of Tempe’s outdoor gems is Papago Park. The park is home to a variety of different attractions, including the Hole-in-the-Rock, which is, quite literally, a hole in a rock that you can climb through! The park also features hiking trails, bike paths, a fishing lake, and the Papago Buttes.

Papago Park is a great place to spend an afternoon if you’re looking to get some fresh air and vitamin D. It’s also a popular spot for hiking and picnicking, and was one of my favorite places to spend a sunny day outdoors when I lived in Tempe back in college.

The park includes a variety of different walking trails, making it the perfect place to get some exercise while enjoying the beautiful desert scenery. For dog moms (and dads) visiting Tempe, Papago also features its own dog park where your fur baby can run around and make new friends.

And for those who want to learn more about the area’s history, the park also includes the Heritage Square Museum. The museum features a replica of an old-fashioned Western town, and visitors can learn about the area’s history through guided tours.

If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that will allow you to experience the desert landscape, Papago Park should definitely be at the top of your list!

3. Mill Avenue

An iconic Tempe landmark and a place where I may or may not have spent way too much time in college, Mill Ave is the perfect place to enjoy some shopping, dining, and nightlife. The street is lined with a variety of different stores, restaurants, and bars, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.

For those looking to do some shopping, the Mill Avenue district is home to a variety of boutiques and stores, including Frances, Lucy in Disguise, and plenty of ASU apparel stores. The street is also lined with a variety of restaurants, ranging from fast food to fine dining.

Some of my favorite places to eat on Mill Ave include Daily Jam (a Tempe brunch staple), Mellow Mushroom, and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Each of these restaurants offer a unique dining experience, and most have great happy hour deals. Be sure to try some of the unique beers on tap at Mellow Mushroom!

And for those looking to enjoy Tempe’s nightlife scene, Mill Ave is where you’ll find some of the best bars in town, including Casey Moore’s Oyster House, Rula Bula Irish Pub, and Fat Tuesday. If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe at night, Mill Ave is the place to be.

Start with some pregame drinks and tacos at Fuzzy’s, then head to Fat Tuesday for some daiquiris and $1 atomic cherries (vodka-soaked cherries, yum!). And finally, end the night with some live music and Irish whiskey at Rula Bula or a cocktail bucket at CASA.

Whew, sounds like quite the night! I may or may not be speaking from experience…

Regardless of what time of day you visit, Mill Ave is always worth a stroll. From the unique shops to the delicious food, there’s something for everyone on this iconic Tempe street.

4. Phoenix Zoo

This famous zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States, and is home to over 3,000 animals. The zoo is divided into different sections, each with its own unique theme and exhibits. Some of the highlights include the Monkey Village, which is home to a variety of different monkey species; the Ocelot exhibit, which is home to a variety of different species of wild cats; and the Stingray Bay exhibit, where visitors can touch and feed stingrays.

This zoo is a great place to visit if you’re looking for fun things to do in Tempe with kids. In addition to the animal exhibits, the zoo also features a variety of different educational shows and activities. And for those looking to cool off on a hot day, the zoo also has its own water park, Wildlife World.

And for those without kids, the zoo is still worth a visit in my opinion. Even as a grown adult, I still enjoy visiting the zoo and seeing all of the different animals! There’s just something about being surrounded by so much wildlife that makes me feel at peace.

If you’re wondering what to do in Tempe that will allow you to get up close and personal with a variety of different animals, the Phoenix Zoo is a great option. The zoo is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and admission tickets can be bought online or at the location.

5. Tempe Town Lake

A man-made lake in the heart of the desert may sound like an oxymoron, but Tempe Town Lake is one of the most popular attractions in the city. The lake is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, and there are a variety of different activities that can be done here.

For those looking to get some exercise, Tempe Town Lake is a great place to go for a run or walk. The lake has a 3-mile path that surrounds it, making it the perfect place to get in some cardio. And for those looking for a more challenging workout, the lake also has a variety of different obstacles that can be used for things like rock climbing and slacklining.

For those looking to relax, Tempe Town Lake is also a great place to take in the sights and enjoy the Arizona weather. The lake is a popular spot for things like picnics and outdoor yoga. And for those looking to cool off on a hot day, the lake has a beach where visitors can swim and paddleboard. On a sunny day, you can find tons of people out on the water on standup paddle boards or in kayaks.

Tempe Town Lake is open daily from 5 am to 11 pm, and admission is free. Parking can be found in the various parking garages located around the lake.

6. Tempe Marketplace

Shopping, anyone?

Tempe Marketplace is an open-air shopping center that features a variety of different stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. Some of the stores located here include H&M, Forever 21, Sephora, and Victoria’s Secret.

And when it comes to food, there are over 30 different restaurants to choose from, including things like Cheesecake Factory, The Keg Steakhouse, and P.F. Chang’s.

My personal favorite restaurant at Tempe Marketplace is Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, which has amazing sushi and delicious hibachi.

In addition to shopping and eating, Tempe Marketplace is also a great place to enjoy some entertainment. The mall features an AMC movie theater, as well as a Dave & Buster’s, which is a great place to go if you’re looking for Tempe things to do on a night out.

Tempe Marketplace was one of my favorite places to pass time as a college student. I would often come here to do some shopping, grab a bite to eat, and then catch a movie with friends. And even after graduation, as a working adult, I would still enjoy coming here on the weekends to do some shopping and people-watching.

There are also sometimes events being held at Tempe Marketplace. For example, the center has previously hosted things like farmers markets and holiday festivals. So if you’re looking for stuff to do in Tempe that are both fun and festive, be sure to check and see if there’s anything going on at Tempe Marketplace during your visit!

7. Pueblo Grande Museum

Address: 4619 E Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85034, United States

Pueblo Grande Museum is an archeological park and museum that is dedicated to the history of the Hohokam people. The museum features a variety of different exhibits that discuss various aspects of Hohokam culture, including things like their agriculture, pottery, and trade. One of the most popular things to see at the museum is the replica of a Hohokam village that was created based on archeological evidence.

The museum also has a variety of different educational programs, making it a great place to visit if you’re traveling with kids. These programs include things like guided tours, hands-on activities, and demonstrations. And for those looking to get even more involved, the museum offers volunteer opportunities where you can help with things like excavations and site maintenance.

A visit to this museum is a great option for those for cool stuff to do in Tempe that is both educational and entertaining! It’s a great way to learn more about one of the many Native American tribes that have called Arizona home throughout history.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 4:45 pm. Entry costs $7 for adults and is free for those aged 5 and under.

8. Tempe Beach Park

Address: 80 W Rio Salado Pkwy, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

As you can probably imagine, Arizona gets pretty damn hot.

And when it comes to the best Tempe activities to partake in during the summer, one of the best things to do is head to Tempe Beach Park to cool off. The park features a large man-made lake where people can swim, boat, and paddleboard. There’s also a sand volleyball court, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a walking/biking path that goes around the entire lake.

Tempe Beach Park is also a popular spot for festivals and events. Some of the things that have been held here in the past include things like music festivals, food truck festivals, and Fourth of July celebrations. The Tempe Freestyle Festival is an 80s-themed dance party that is held at the park each year and features things like live music by local bands, food trucks, and costumed dancers. And the Innings Festival is a Spring Training baseball celebration for music lovers and baseball fans alike.

Whether you’re looking to cool off on a hot day or just want to enjoy some outdoor activities, the Beach Park of Tempe is a great option for fun places in Tempe! You can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the sun and the water.

The park is open daily from 5 am to 11 pm. Admission is free, making it a great option for those on a budget looking for free things to do in Tempe.

9. Arizona Mills Mall

Address: 5000 S Arizona Mills Cir, Tempe, AZ 85282, United States

For those that love to shop, one of the best things to do in Tempe is visit Arizona Mills Mall. The mall is huge and features a variety of different stores, ranging from things like H&M and Forever 21 to clearance options brands like the Adidas outlet. There’s also a food court with a bunch of different options, as well as a movie theater.

In addition to the regular stores, the mall also has a few attractions that make it a great place to visit with kids. There’s an indoor amusement park called Gameworks, an aquarium called Sea Life Arizona, and a lego store. The mall is also home to an animal adoption center called the Arizona Kingdom, making it a great place to visit if you’re looking to adopt a new furry friend.

Whether you’re looking for a place to shop ’til you drop or just want to find cool things to do in Tempe that the whole family will enjoy, Arizona Mills Mall is a great option!

Arizona Mills is a fairly small outlet mall, but it’s a good option if you’re looking for things to do on a budget as many of the stores offer clearance and outlet pricing.

For a more wide variety of stores and dining options, I’d recommend heading to Scottsdale Fashion Square mall. It’s the largest mall in Arizona and is only about a 20-30 minute drive from Tempe.

10. Arizona State University

Address: 1151 S Forest Ave, Tempe, AZ 85287, United States

This wouldn’t be a proper ‘Best Things to Do in Tempe AZ’ post if I didn’t mention my beloved alma mater and the largest university in the state, Arizona State University.

ASU is a great school for those looking to get a quality education at an affordable price (it’s one of the most affordable schools in the country!). The Tempe campus is also located in a great spot, right in the heart of downtown Tempe with easy access to things like public transportation, restaurants, and nightlife.

There are also a ton of things going on around campus at all times, especially during the school year. There are always things like farmers markets, concerts, and festivals happening. And if you’re a fan of college football, you can catch a game at Sun Devil Stadium in the fall!

Even if you’re not a student, there are still plenty of things to do on ASU campus. You can go for a walk or run on one of the many trails that wind through campus, stroll down the famous Palm Walk, visit one of the museums (like the ASU Art Museum or the Institute for Human Origins), or catch a show at one of the on-campus performance venues.

The Gammage Auditorium at ASU is known for being one of the best performance venues in the state and has hosted things like Broadway shows, musical performances, and lectures. Hamilton, Cats, and Miss Saigon are just a few of the things that have been held here in the past.

If you’re looking for things to do here that are a bit more active, ASU also has a recreation center that is open to the public (for a small fee). The rec center is located not far from Gammage Auditorium and has things like an indoor swimming pool, a rock climbing wall, basketball courts, and a weight room. There are also often things going on like yoga classes, intramural sports leagues, and other special events.

And for stuff to do in Tempe that is a little more low-key, ASU’s campus is also home to a number of different parks and gardens. The Japanese Tea Garden is a serene spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, while the many grassy areas on campus are perfect for picnics, frisbee, or just soaking up some sun.

Whether you’re a student, alumni, or just looking to explore one of the largest university campuses in the country, ASU is definitely worth a visit!

11. Tempe Diablo Stadium

Address: 2200 W Alameda Dr, Tempe, AZ 85282, United States

You simply can’t explore Tempe without checking out Tempe Diablo Stadium!

This 10,000-seat stadium is the home of the minor league baseball team, the Arizona League Tempe Angels (not to be confused with the Los Angeles Angels!). It’s also a popular spot for things like concerts, festivals, and other special events.

One of the things that make Tempe Diablo Stadium so unique is its location. The stadium is located in the heart of Tempe, right next to the ASU campus and just a few blocks from Mill Avenue. This makes it super easy to get to and there are always fun things going on around it.

If you’re looking for Tempe Arizona things to do that are family-friendly, Tempe Diablo Stadium is a great option! You can catch a baseball game (they’re usually pretty affordable), or check out one of the many special events that are often held here. The stadium is also a great spot for people watching, as you can usually find a lot of interesting characters milling about.

Even if you’re not interested in baseball or special events, Tempe Diablo Stadium is still worth a visit. The stadium has a really cool, retro feel to it and is one of the best things to see in Tempe.

It’s also located in a great spot for exploring the rest of Tempe, so you can easily walk to things like Mill Avenue or Sun Devil Stadium after taking a look around.

12. SEA LIFE Aquarium

Address: 5000 S Arizona Mills Cir Suite 145, Tempe, AZ 85282, United States

SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium is located in the Arizona Mills Mall, which I mentioned a bit earlier. The aquarium itself is pretty small, but it’s a great place to take kids (or adults who are young at heart!).

Some of the things you’ll see at SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium include sharks, stingrays, seahorses, and other sea creatures. There is also a really cool “ocean tunnel” that you can walk through to get up close and personal with some of the animals.

Admission to the aquarium isn’t too pricey and includes everything from a nose-to-nose encounter with sharks to a touch pool where you can pet stingrays. There are also a number of different talks and feedings throughout the day, so you can learn more about the creatures that call this aquarium home.

For those in need of fun things to do in Tempe with kids (or kids at heart), SEA LIFE AZ Aquarium is a great option. The aquarium isn’t too big, so it’s perfect for younger kids who might get overwhelmed in a larger one. And even if you don’t have kids, the aquarium is still a fun place to check out!

On summer days in Tempe when it’s just way too hot to be outside, SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium is a great place to go to cool off and escape the heat for a bit!

13. Hall of Flame Fire Museum

Address: 6101 E Van Buren St, Phoenix, AZ 85008, United States

What’s hotter than a museum full of firefighters? Not much, if you ask me!

The Hall of Flame Fire Museum is located in Phoenix, but it’s only about a 20-minute drive from Tempe, so it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. This interactive museum is dedicated to honoring the history of firefighting and features a number of different exhibits that showcase the history of firefighting.

One of the things that makes the Hall of Flame Fire Museum so unique is the fact that it’s home to the world’s largest collection of antique fire equipment. You’ll see everything from early hand pumps to horse-drawn steam engines, and you can even learn about how firefighters fought fires in the early days.

You’ll see things like old fire trucks, equipment, and even a replica of a 19th-century firehouse. There is also a really cool exhibit that shows how firefighters battled the wildfire that consumed much of Arizona in 2002. The Hall of Flame Fire Museum is also home to the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, a 3,000-square-foot tribute that honors firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

If you’re looking for things to do near Tempe that are a bit out of the ordinary, the Hall of Flame Fire Museum is definitely worth checking out. Even if you’re not particularly interested in firefighting, the museum is still really cool and has a lot to offer.

Plus, it’s a great way to escape the heat on a hot day in Tempe!

14. Tempe Improv

Address: 930 E University Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Calling all the comedians out there! If you’re looking for unique things to do in Tempe that are a little bit on the quirky side, you’ll want to check out the Tempe Improv. This comedy club has been around since 1974 and has featured some pretty big names over the years, including Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher, and Tim Allen.

The Tempe Improv is located right in the heart of Downtown Tempe and is a great place to catch a show or two while you’re in town. The club features a variety of different comedians, both local and national, so there’s sure to be something that will make you laugh.

The shows at the Tempe Improv are definitely not suitable for children, but if you’re looking for a night of adult-only fun, this is the place to be.

Tickets to the shows at the Tempe Improv are pretty reasonably priced, especially considering how much entertainment you’ll get for your money. And if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more low-key, the club also has a restaurant and bar where you can relax and grab a bite to eat before the show.

The Tempe Improv is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Tempe, so if you’re looking for a night of laughs, this is the place to go. And, if you wanna test out your jokes, there’s even an open mic night where you can take the stage!

15. Old Town Scottsdale

You simply can’t visit Tempe without taking a visit to its most popular nearby cities! And located nearby, Scottsdale is a great place to explore for the day. Scottsdale is home to a number of different things to see and do, but one of the best things about this city is Old Town Scottsdale.

Old Town Scottsdale is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Arizona, and it’s only about a 20-minute drive from Tempe. This outdoor shopping mall features a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and galleries, and is the perfect place to spend a day if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe.

There are plenty of things to do in Old Town Scottsdale, but one of the best things to do is simply walk around and explore. There’s so much to see and do, and you’ll definitely find yourself coming back for more. If you get hungry, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from, and if you’re looking for a place to grab a drink, there are plenty of bars and clubs to check out.

Old Town Scottsdale is definitely the place to be when it comes to nightlife in the Phoenix metro area!

During the day, Old Town Scottsdale is the perfect place to do some shopping. There are a variety of shops to choose from, and you’re sure to find something that you’ll love. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, clothing, or just about anything else, you’ll be able to find it in Old Town. The streets are lined with tons of local boutiques, and the massive Fashion Square Mall is also located nearby.

Old Town Scottsdale is also home to a number of art galleries, so if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more cultural, this is definitely the place to go. You’ll find a wide variety of art, from traditional Native American pottery to contemporary paintings, and there’s even an outdoor sculpture garden that’s worth checking out.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Old Town. From bottomless brunch at R&R to a night out on the town at INTL, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant and historic part of Scottsdale.

16. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Arizona

Another Arizona Mills attraction, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is perfect for families with young kids. This indoor play area is packed with things to do, including LEGO build and play zones, a 4D cinema, and even a LEGO raft ride.

The build and play zones are definitely the highlight of the LEGOLAND Center, as they allow kids to let their imaginations run wild. There are a variety of different themed build and play zones, including an underwater zone, a pirate zone, and even a princess zone. No matter what your child’s interests are, they’re sure to find something that they’ll love at the LEGOLAND.

The 4D cinema is also a great option for things to do at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center. This cinema shows a variety of different LEGO-themed movies, and the 4D effects make the experience even more fun. And, if you’re looking for something a bit more active, the LEGO raft ride is perfect. This indoor water ride is definitely a hit with kids, and is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

With so many things to do, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is the perfect place to spend a day with your family. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more educational, the center also offers a variety of LEGO-themed workshops, classes, and even birthday parties.

Admission to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is around $28 per person, making it one of the more affordable things to do in Tempe. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more unique, the center also offers an annual pass that provides unlimited admission throughout the year.

17. Eat Mexican food at El Paisano

Address: 1035 E Lemon St, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

I’m not being dramatic when I say that the best Mexican food in Tempe can be found at El Paisano’s. Seriously.

This family-run restaurant has been serving up authentic Mexican cuisine for years, and it definitely shows in their food. On any given day, this place is packed with people looking for a delicious and affordable meal. And since they stay open late, it has become the go-to spot for drunk college students looking for a late-night snack after a night out on Mill.

It’s safe to say the El Paisano (or El P’s as us locals call it) is a Tempe staple.

The menu at El Paisano is pretty extensive, so you’re sure to find something that you’ll love. And, if you’re not sure what to order, the staff is always happy to make recommendations. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. But, if you’re looking for something truly authentic, I recommend the carne asada fries. The steak is perfectly seasoned and cooked, and the fries are crispy and delicious. The California burrito is also a popular choice!

From enchiladas and tacos to quesadillas and burritos, there’s something for everyone at El Paisano’s. And, if you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, the restaurant also offers a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, like menudo and pozole. No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find it at El Paisano’s.

In addition to their great food, El P’s also has a great atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated with traditional Mexican art, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming.

El Paisano is located in the heart of Tempe, just a few blocks from ASU. And, since it’s so popular with students, it’s usually pretty easy to find a table. However, during peak hours (lunch and dinner), the restaurant can get pretty crowded. So, if you’re looking for a quiet meal, I recommend going during off-peak hours.

18. Casino Arizona

Address: 524 N 92nd St, Scottsdale, AZ 85256, United States

If you’re feeling lucky and looking for Tempe activities that are a bit more adult, then I recommend checking out Casino Arizona. This casino is one of the largest in the state, and offers a variety of gaming options, including slots, table games, bingo, and poker. They also have a number of restaurants on-site, as well as a showroom that hosts a variety of live entertainment.

Casino Arizona is located in Scottsdale, just a short drive from Tempe. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are free, the casino offers a free shuttle that runs between the two cities.

Admission to the casino is free, and you must be 21 or older to enter. However, if you’re looking to gamble, you will need to purchase chips. Table minimums start at $5, and slots start at $0.25.

Whether you’re looking to gamble or just enjoy some live entertainment, Casino Arizona is a great place to spend an evening. Just be sure to bring your ID and some cash!

19. Downtown Phoenix

No trip to Tempe is complete without exploring the nearby Downtown Phoenix area. This vibrant and historic part of the city is home to a number of restaurants, bars, shops, and museums. And, since it’s just a short drive from Tempe, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Start your exploration of Downtown Phoenix at the Arizona Science Center. This museum is great for kids and adults alike, and offers a variety of interactive exhibits. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Pizzeria Bianco for some of the best pizza in the city. Trust me, this place is worth the wait!

If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are free, be sure to check out the Phoenix Art Museum. This museum is one of the largest in the country, and offers a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. After you’ve explored the museums, take some time to stroll through the historic Roosevelt Row Arts District. This area is home to a number of galleries, shops, and restaurants.

And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe at night, Downtown Phoenix is the place to be. The area is home to a variety of bars and nightclubs, so you’re sure to find something to your taste. The Monarch Theater is a popular choice for live music, and Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour is the perfect place to grab a drink.

For sports fans visiting Phoenix, a trip to Chase Field is a must. This stadium is home to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and offers a variety of tours and events throughout the year. Basketball fans can catch a Suns game at Talking Stick Resort Arena, and football fans can watch the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

No matter what you’re interested in, you’re sure to find things to do in Downtown Phoenix that appeal to you. So, be sure to add this area to your list of places to visit while in Tempe!

20. Salt River Tubing

Address: 9200 N Bush Hwy, Mesa, AZ 85215, United States

One of the most popular activities in Tempe is tubing down the Salt River. This activity is perfect for a hot day, and offers a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Salt River Tubing offer tubing trips down the river and provide tubes and life jackets. Tubing trips typically last about 3-4 hours, and the cost ranges from $20-30 per person. All you need to bring is sunscreen, a hat, and some snacks!

I recommend bringing a cooler filled with drinks and snacks and renting an extra tube to place the cooler in. This way, you can float down the river and stay hydrated (and fed!) at the same time.

The water is fairly calm, and there are always other tubers around enjoying the river as well. The scenery is beautiful, and you’re sure to see a variety of wildlife along the way. Keep an eye out for wild horses – they’re native to this area and often seen along the river!

Tubing down the Salt River is a great activity for families, groups of friends, or anyone looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Just be sure to bring some rope with you if you plan on tubing with a group – this way you can tie your tubes together and float down the river as a group!

For a little bit of extra adventure, you could even take a kayaking tour down the Salt River . These tours are typically 3-4 hours long and cost around $60 per person. You’ll get to paddle through some rapids and see the river from a whole new perspective!

Tubing trips are typically available from March through October, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Although Salt River is open in summer, I don’t really recommend tubing during this time as summer temperatures in Arizona can climb upwards of 120 degrees Fahrenheit and being in direct sunlight on the river would be incredibly uncomfortable (not to mention dangerous!).

Whether you choose to tube or kayak, spending a day on the Salt River is an activity you won’t want to miss while in Tempe. And, since it’s located just outside of Tempe, it’s the perfect place to spend a day.

21. Topgolf

Address: 9500 Talking Stick Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85256, United States

Looking for things to do in Tempe at night? Then you need to check out Topgolf! This is a great activity for groups of friends or family, and is perfect for both adults and kids.

Topgolf is a combination of golf, bowling, and darts – and it’s a whole lot of fun. You can play in teams of 2-6 people, and the goal is to score points by hitting balls into targets. The targets are located in different zones, and each zone has a different point value. The farther away the target is, the more points you’ll earn.

Topgolf is a great way to spend an evening, and it’s perfect for all skill levels. Even if you’ve never played golf before, you’ll still have a blast at Topgolf. The staff is always willing to help and offer tips, and there are different levels of play so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Night games at Topgolf are the best – they have a great atmosphere and the lights add an extra element of fun.

After a few rounds of Topgolf, you can head to the lounge area and enjoy some food and drinks. The menu features a variety of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. And there’s a full bar with a wide selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Topgolf is open year-round, but hours vary depending on the season. In the summer, it’s open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. And in the winter, it’s open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends.

No matter what time of year you visit Tempe, be sure to check out Topgolf! It’s a great activity for groups of all sizes, and is perfect for both adults and kids.

22. Day trip to the Grand Canyon

What’s the best thing to do in Tempe? Well, leave Tempe. Seriously, one of the best things to do in Tempe is to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arizona, and for good reason. This natural wonder is truly breathtaking, and there’s no experience quite like standing at the edge of the canyon and looking down into its depths.

There are a few different ways to get to the Grand Canyon from Tempe. You could drive, but the drive is about 4 hours long each way. If you’re short on time and feeling adventurous, you could take a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix . This helicopter experience will take you soaring over the Colorado River and into the depths of the Grand Canyon.

It’s an amazing experience that you won’t soon forget!

If you want to visit the Grand Canyon but don’t want to have to deal with planning transportation there and back, consider taking a guided day trip tour of the Grand Canyon from Tempe . This all-day tour will last about 12 hours, and will take you to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The tour includes round-trip transportation from Tempe, including a cruise along Route 66.

You’ll also have plenty of time to explore the Grand Canyon and take in its beauty before being dropped back off in Tempe at the end of the day.

The Grand Canyon is a must-see for anyone visiting Arizona, and it’s only a short(ish) drive from Tempe. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe, consider taking a day trip to the Grand Canyon!

23. Hike Tempe Butte (“A Mountain”)

Address: E Rio Salado Pkwy & S Mill Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Another famous Tempe landmark is “A Mountain,” also known as Hayden Butte or Tempe Butte. This volcanic cinder cone is a popular spot for hiking and running, and offers stunning views of the college town. The mountain is relatively small and the hike is fairly easy, making it a great option for anyone looking for things to do in Tempe, AZ.

There are two main trails that lead to the top of the mountain – the Cave Creek Trail and the Gila Trail. The Cave Creek Trail is shorter and steeper, while the Gila Trail is longer and more gradual. Both trails are well-marked and easy to follow.

Once you reach the top of the mountain, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Tempe and the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Phoenix! If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are both active and scenic, look no further than A Mountain.

For the best views, I recommend taking a sunrise or sunset hike on A Mountain . The colors are absolutely incredible, and it’s a great way to start or end your day. Just be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight if you’re hiking at sunrise or sunset, as the trails can be a bit dark!

24. Sip wine at Postino

Address: 615 S College Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Another Tempe staple that got me through many a college exam is Postino.

This wine bar is the perfect place to relax with a glass (or bottle) of wine and some small bites. They have quite a few locations in Tempe and the surrounding area, but their Postino Annex location is actually located inside the former Arizona State University’s art annex building, where the founder of Postino attended her art classes in the 90s!

Postino has a great selection of wines, both by the glass and by the bottle. They also have a variety of small plates, including bruschetta, cheese boards, panini, salads, and more. My personal favorite is the prosciutto and fig apple brie bruschetta – it’s SO good.

The thing Postino is most well-known for is its deals – they offer $6 glasses of wine and draft pitchers before 5 pm during the week. But, my favorite has to be their “$20 Bottle & Board” deal, which gets you a bottle of wine and a bruschetta board for just $20! It’s an incredible deal, and the perfect way to relax with friends after a long day.

A fig apple and Brie bruschetta board paired with a bottle of Reisling after a long day of exams? Um, yes please.

A trip to Postino is a must for anyone in need of some wine-fueled relaxation. And, at just $20 for a bottle of wine and a bruschetta board, it’s one of the most affordable (and delicious) Tempe, AZ attractions!

25. Tempe History Museum

Address: 809 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ 85282, United States

The Tempe History Museum is a great place to learn about the history of Tempe and the Salt River Valley. The museum is located in the former home of Charles Trumbull Hayden, one of Tempe’s founding fathers. The Hayden House is a beautiful example of Territorial-style architecture, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum offers a variety of exhibits on the history of Tempe and the Salt River Valley, as well as rotating exhibitions on various topics. The museum is also home to an extensive research library, which is open to the public. With its collection of over 70,000 artifacts, the Tempe History Museum is a great place to learn about the rich history of this area.

The Tempe History Museum is one of the best things to do in Tempe for history buffs and anyone interested in learning about the origins of this city. Admission to the museum is free, making it a great activity for budget-minded travelers. Donations are accepted to help support the museum and its educational programs.

26. Culinary Dropout

Address: 149 S Farmer Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Oops, yet another Tempe activity regarding food! I promise, there are other things to do in Tempe besides eat and drink (although, those are pretty great things to do, too).

Culinary Dropout is a restaurant/bar owned by the Fox Restaurant Concepts group. The menu features a variety of American comfort food classics with a twist. Think gourmet burgers, wood-fired pizzas, roasted chicken, and more. They also have an extensive beer and cocktail menu, making it the perfect place to grab a drink after work or on the weekends.

Culinary Dropout has a fun, laid-back vibe with games like giant Jenga and cornhole. It’s the perfect place to relax with friends and enjoy some good food and drinks. The price point is a bit higher than some of the other places on this list, but the quality of the food is worth it.

So, if you’re looking for a fun place to eat and drink in Tempe, Culinary Dropout is definitely worth checking out. Just be sure to bring your wallet – it’s not the cheapest place in town!

27. Day trip to Sedona or Jerome

The best thing about Tempe is that it’s fairly centrally-located, making it a great base for exploring other parts of Arizona. If you’re looking for things to do outside of Tempe, consider taking a day trip to Sedona or Jerome.

Sedona is a beautiful town located about 2 hours north of Tempe. It’s known for its red rocks and stunning scenery. There are plenty of things to do in Sedona, including hiking, mountain biking, shopping, and exploring the many art galleries. In the winter, you can even go snowboarding or tubing at the Snowbowl.

If you do visit Sedona, be sure to check out one of my six favorite Sedona breweries while you’re there. Tell ’em I sent you!

Jerome is a small, former mining town that has been reinvented as an arts community. Located about 1.5 hours south of Tempe, it’s known for its copper mines and ghost towns. Today, Jerome is a popular tourist destination with a variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. The town has a bit of a quirky vibe and is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for things to do outside of Tempe.

Both Sedona and Jerome make for great day trips from Tempe. So, if you’re looking for things to do outside of the city, be sure to add these two places to your list!

If you want to spend a day seeing both towns, consider this guided day trip to Sedona and Jerome . You’ll have a chance to explore both cities with a knowledgeable guide, making it a great option for first-time visitors. You’ll even get to see the Montezuma Castle, an ancient Native American cliff dwelling that still stands today.

The trip includes hotel pick up and drop off from Tempe, making it a convenient way to see both Sedona and Jerome in one day.

28. Kiwanis Park

Address: 5500 S Mill Ave, Tempe, AZ 85283, United States

Kiwanis Park is a popular park located in Tempe. The park features a variety of amenities, including a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, and a fishing pier. Kiwanis Park is also home to the Tempe Butte, an extinct volcano that you can hike to the top of for some great views of the city.

Kiwanis Lake is located in the center of the park and is a popular spot for fishing. The park is also popular with birdwatchers, as it’s home to a variety of birds, including herons, ducks, and geese. Kiwanis Recreation Center, located adjacent to the park, offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages.

The park is a great place to come to relax, exercise, or spend time with friends and family. It’s also a popular spot for events and festivals, so be sure to check the calendar before you visit.

Kiwanis Park is free to enter and is open daily from dawn to dusk.

29. Four Peaks Brewing Company

Address: 1340 E 8th St #104, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Four Peaks Brewing Company is a popular brewery located in Tempe and a must-visit for all my beer connoisseurs out there. This brewery was founded in 1996 and is best known for its Kilt Lifter Scottish-Style Ale, which is available on tap and in stores across Arizona.

In addition to beer, the brewery also has a full menu with burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. And, if you’re looking for something to do on a Sunday, Four Peaks Brewing Company also offers free tours of the brewery. The tours are first-come, first-served and typically fill up fast, so be sure to get there early if you’re interested.

The brewery is open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 11pm, and Sunday from 12pm to 8pm. And, if you’re looking for things to do on a Wednesday night, Four Peaks Brewing Company also offers live music from 6pm to 9pm.

Where to stay in Tempe

• MK Hotels ASU

This hotel is a great budget option when it comes to where to stay in Tempe on a budget. The MK Hotel is located just minutes from downtown Tempe, ASU, and Sun Devil Stadium. It features an outdoor pool, free breakfast, and free parking.

The Graduate Tempe Hotel is located just steps from Arizona State University and Tempe Town Lake. The hotel features a rooftop bar with views of the city, an outdoor pool, and a 24-hour fitness center. Guest rooms offer free WiFi, minifridges, and microwaves.

The Tempe History Museum, located in the former home of Charles Trumbull Hayden, one of Tempe’s founding fathers is a treasure house to learn about the history of the city and the Salt River Valley. 

The Hayden House, the location of the museum, itself is worth checking out, which is a beautiful example of Territorial-style architecture, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the top and free things to do in Tempe Az, The Tempe History Museum is home to over 70,000 historical artefacts, archival footage, exhibits and photographs on the history of Tempe and the Salt River Valley.

The museum is also home to an extensive research library, open to the public.

The Tempe Center for the Arts is a visual and performing arts located on West Rio Salado Parkway along the Salt River in Tempe. 

Built between 2004 and 2007, the complex’s roof is dazzling, comprising intricate geometric folded plates.

The center serves as the home of dance companies from around the world.  

Browse the visual arts space that displays thousands of splendid works by local and international artists.

Watch a show at the theatre, visit one of the many exhibitions, witness an event in their 200-seater studio theatre, or attend the many performances held here.

There are usually open-mic nights, plays held here by local theatre groups, and even free classical concerts during the evenings and weekends.

WITNESS AN EVENT AT ASU GAMMAGE

One of the iconic attractions in Tempe, Arizona is ASU Gammage, a massive auditorium located on South Forest Avenue on the campus of Arizona State University. 

It is one of the top things to do in Tempe AZ as this historic building was the last publicly commissioned building designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. 

Built between 1962 and 1964, the auditorium is named after Dr Grady Gammage, president of the university from 1933 to 1959 and close friend of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The original flour mill was constructed in 1874 and rebuilt later as the building was brought down by a fire. 

Although not used since 1998, and you cannot get in, the Hayden Flour Mill is worth a quick stop on your way to A Mountain as it is on the way.

This 10,000-seat stadium is the home of the minor league baseball team, the Arizona League Tempe Angels, and a popular spot for things like concerts, festivals, and other special events.

Built in 1968, the stadium offers plush seating, clean lavatories, and cutting-edge lighting and audio systems offering excellent views of the landscape no matter where the seating is.

Located in the heart of Tempe, right next to the ASU campus and a few blocks from Mill Avenue on West Alameda Drive, Tempe Diablo Stadium is a fantastic spot to catch a baseball game that is usually affordable.

Head to the northern end of the lake, which has boat ramps and spaces for fishing, playing, and sunbathing.

There is a marina with boat rentals, picnic ramadas, multi-use trails, a playground and splash pads.

You can fish Walleye, largemouth bass, yellow bass, rainbow trout, bluegill, channel catfish and crappie regularly stocked. 

PICNIC AT KIWANIS PARK

Kiwanis Park, a famous park home to the big Kiwanis Lake, is one of the best urban green spaces in Tempe spanning 54,000 square feet.

It is one of my favourite free things to do in Tempe AZ as it has something to offer to visitors of all ages and travellers of all types.

If you want to enjoy outdoor games, choose between a playground, basketball courts, baseball, volleyball and tennis courts.

Want to picnic, head to the picnic tables overlooking stunning lush views.

If you want to have fun in the water, how about fishing in the lake? Or simply relax and watch colourful visitors including herons, ducks, and geese.

If you want to escape the heat if you are here during hot afternoons, head to one of the indoor and outdoor wave pools for cooling off.

Stroll along the winding trails to enjoy stunning sunset views over the lake.

Hike to the top of the Tempe Butte, an extinct volcano following a trail in the park.

Enjoy bowling with your kids at the bowling alley or play with your kids on swings and a zip line.

For people wanting more water sports, there is a three-story tower with multiple slides, or rent a pedal boat or kayak. 

If you are looking for a quiet romantic walk at night, stroll the pathways at night as the park is open until midnight every day!

You may even be able to join a local event as Kiwanis Park is a famous venue for all types of events and festivals.

HIKE IN HAYDEN BUTTE PRESERVE

Hayden Butte Preserve is one of the top attractions in Tempe. 

If you are an outdoor enthusiast wondering what to do in Tempe, Az, I recommend heading to this iconic cinder cone.

Hayden Butte Preserve is also a protected area home to over 500 petroglyphs, created by the Hohokam Native Americans between 750 AD and 1450 AD. 

Besides being a popular spot for hiking and running, Hayden Butte offers stunning views of the college town and is a perfect spot to watch golden sunsets painting the desert landscapes on the horizon spectacularly. 

On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Phoenix. 

Since the hike is pretty easy, it is one of the fun things to do in Tempe, AZ, with kids.

Also known as ‘A’ Mountain, or ASU Mountain due to its proximity to the Arizona State University Campus at over 400 meters high, the hike to the top of Hayden Butte takes around 30 minutes to climb, delivering panoramic views over Tempe.

Ensure to bring a headlamp or flashlight if you’re hiking at sunrise or sunset, as the trails can be a bit dark.

There are two, well-marked, easy-to-follow trails – the Cave Creek Trail and the Gila Trail. 

The Cave Creek Trail is shorter and steeper, while the Gila Trail is longer and more gradual.

HIKE AT PAPAGAO PARK

Head to Hole in the Rock, a natural geological formation in Papago Park, one of the popular hikes and things to do in 

Hole-in-the-Rock is a series of holes carved out by millions of years of erosion by the wind into the sandstone hills.

Due to its location, this 1,500-acre park, only 15 minutes east of downtown Phoenix, is also one of the  best Phoenix sunrise spots  as well.

Plenty of trails are categorized into the West Side Trails and the East Side Trails. 

One of the most popular routes for enjoying a quiet sunrise is the trail to Hole-in-the-Rock.

You can climb inside the formations and watch one of the  best sunsets near Phoenix , casting brilliant hues over downtown and the desert oasis below. 

Since the park gates close at 7 PM, plan your hike accordingly.

AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park is one of the best museums known to preserve the history of Arizona, from the 20th and 21st centuries

Check out the days of the early settlement and a Copper Mine Exhibit, a scale model of an Arizona copper mine that shows how the copper ore was brought up from the earth and made into everyday products.

Tempe, also known as Hayden’s Ferry during Arizona’s territorial times, is named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece. The famous pioneer Darrell Duppa is recognized for suggesting Tempe’s name in 1879, after he compared a part of Salt River valley to the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece.

The town was home to US Airways until the end of 2013, when they then merged with American Airlines and moved to their new home in Fort Worth , Texas . It is the home of Arizona State University and always busy with sporting and other events of one kind or another.

There are many activities you can do and attractions you can visit in Tempe. I understand that choosing where to go can be a hassle. So to help you make your plan, I, an Arizona local who frequents Tempe, have prepared a list for you. Here is my list of the best things to do in Tempe:

1. Segway down Tempe Lake

Tempe Town Lake is a reservoir occupying a portion of the (currently) dry riverbed of the Salt River as it passes through Tempe. To get a really good look and feel of the lake, I suggest you take a Segway Tours of Tempe to find out all about it!

As you pass through the area touring the lake, your guides will narrate stories and historical facts while you learn how to negotiate this interesting ride.

Safety is a big priority and you will be taught the correct way to maneuver as you paddle along. A great experience for all the family.

2. ASU Gammage Auditorium

This stunning auditorium is thought to be the last public commission of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, having taken 25 months to complete. It is a popular theater venue with both patrons and touring performers, offering comfortable seats, wide aisles and very good acoustics.

It’s also worth viewing the three lobby galleries which feature paintings and photography from local artists. Official building tours are available too.

3. Tempe Center for the Arts

The Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) is indeed a sight for sore eyes! Bring the family and have a walk around this Center which features a roof made of complex geometric folded plates – wow!

In fact, the roof has become a real landmark of the city, being highly visible from the nearby freeways and to the many airplanes that land at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. But of course, the roof is not the only thing that made TCA popular. I hold it as one of the best places in Arizona to watch a play, live band, or concert.

The grounds are also beautiful, complementing the Center’s modern and chic interior. The kids will love the fountain overflow that drops off into the surrounding pool, making it an awesome wall for them to climb on!

4. Desert Financial Arena

The Desert Financial Arena is a 10,754-seat multi-purpose arena, and not only home to the Sun Devils men and women’s volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and wrestling, but  also host to many graduation ceremonies as well as a variety of shows and concerts.

This lovely campus is situated within a mile square space surrounded by pretty landscaping. There are some very interesting museums to visit here too. A majority of them is at no cost, so I recommend checking them out.

Bring the whole family and experience some sport, cultural or musical enjoyment – there’s something here to interest every member!

5. Sea Life Arizona

If you are like me who is fascinated with aquatic wildlife, you must take a trip to Sea Life Arizona. The family are bound to have great fun visiting Sea Life Arizona. The 26,000 square foot interactive aquarium is home to thousands of aquatic creatures, together with a 360 degree ocean tunnel and even some interactive touch pools!

The aquarium is filled to the brim with amazing sea life, including octopi (if you want to be posh about it), sharks and seahorses that swim in the educational aquarium facility.

Though not the largest of aquariums, it can certainly provide a few good hours of entertainment and, as it is situated within a mall, can be easily combined with some shopping! I had the time of my life here.

6. Tempe History Museum

This is a very well maintained center and a great find for families as there is plenty here to keep your kids entertained. The museum is home to plenty of actual information about Tempe’s past, with varied displays of interesting and thought provoking topics. I highly recommend to visit this place if you want to know what events occurred on this land.

The museum also has a lawn surrounding it on which live performances of all different music genres are frequently held.

There is also an attractive café inside where you can get some hot and cold refreshments along with tasty snacks.

7. Tempe Marketplace

Some days, you are not sure what to do but you know staying at the hotel or home is not an option. If you find yourself in this situation, I recommend doing what I did – spend an enjoyable afternoon at Tempe Marketplace. This place is a cornucopian mix of shops, restaurants, coffee houses and movie theaters, all comfortably sharing 1.3 million square feet of eye-catching retail space. There’s plenty of things to do!

The skillful architecture includes dramatic light and laser elements, unique water features and outdoor fireplaces which make for a very attractive environment in which to walk around.

The kids can head for the movies while mom and dad enjoy an afternoon of shopping, then meet up afterwards at one of the attractive outdoor dining areas.

8. Kiwanis Lake and Park – two lovely attractions in one!

I consider Kiwanis Lake and Park one of the best places in Tempe for recreation. Kiwanis Lake is situated in gorgeous Kiwanis Park, with many locals enjoying the various attractions available, which include boating, seasonal paddleboat rentals, sports fields, playgrounds and a recreational center with wave pool.

And there’s more! For the little members of the family there’s a small toddler area with a small climbing structure and music makers. There are swings and a zip line together with a 3 story tower with several slides. As an adventurous person, I loved the zip line and highly recommend you try it.

9. The music never ends at the Marquee Theatre

Marquee Theatre is a small-sized music venue that sits on the north side of Tempe Town. Popular because of its intimate and cozy setting, finding your way to your seat is a breeze, normally taking a very short time.

The Marquee is truly a type of old style music venue, hosting one bar, large standing area in front of the stage, (no seating) and a small merchandise area where the bands can sell their wares.

I think this really is a wonderful venue for music lovers, giving fans a chance to see good, live music at an affordable price. It’s nothing extravagant, but I believe that beautiful memories are oftentimes made in simple places like this. And indeed, I had fun in Marquee Theatre. Thus, I hold this place close to heart.

10. Diablo Stadium

The Diablo Stadium complex was constructed in 1968 and has since undergone extensive renovations. Overlooking the attractive Marriott Buttes Resort, it is very convenient for drivers to locate.

It is also a very popular stadium, hosting a number of sports events as well as being the spring training home to the Los Angeles baseball team and home field for night games of the Arizona League Tempe Angels. I suspect that piece of news has got the baseball fans interested now!

Every seat in the house offers excellent viewing opportunities; just make sure all family members are fully protected from the sometime searing Arizona heat!

11. Arizona Heritage Center

This is a showcase for multimedia and hands on displays, referencing Arizona history and city life. Recently renamed, it now acts as a gathering place for all age groups, focusing on twentieth and twenty first century history.

The family can learn about and enjoy exhibits which will take them on a trip through time, from early settlements to WWII, the post war growth of desert cities to a look at Arizona pop culture. If you’re a local like me who wants to be more connected to our culture, it is certainly a place to visit. And if you’re a tourist, I’d say learning about the culture in the place you’re visiting is always valuable.

Enjoy the new Copper Mine Exhibit, featuring a scale model of an Arizona copper mine with interesting facts together with mineral and ore displays, as well as the Geology Activity Booklets for kids. A fun learning experience for all!

12. Mill Avenue District

Popular with everyone for its constant choice of attractions, or simply the option to relax and people watch if you would rather, Mill Avenue District is a very well planned, pedestrian friendly locale.

Depending on your age group and what interests you, the area has a great bar scene with lots of dining options. It is well known for its fun and peaceful ambiance and choice of nice boutiques and retail stores also. I love going there, especially because there is reliable public transit to get you there! It’s very convenient. With all that said, I recommend you check Mill Avenue District if you want a hassle-free day.

You are also close enough to the lake to be able to take advantage of the many concerts and festivals on offer as well. A real sense of community can be felt here.

13. Papago Park

Papago Park has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride, and no wonder! I can’t help but smile from ear to ear whenever I’m there. It is a wonderful location for everyone; its stunning red rocks with their various rock formations and many hiking, biking and running trails make for a fabulous fun filled and active day out.

The extra good news is that the wide, paved trails make getting around extra easy for those who might have limited mobility, so nobody misses out! The surrounding grounds also have some stunning palms and cacti to enjoy viewing.

Good for everyone, even if you just want to meander slowly around this big park.

14. Pollack Theater

The Pollack Theater was devised by Mr Pollack himself, a dedicated movie buff who delighted in sharing his collection of movie artifacts which are distributed throughout the theatre.

Guests of all ages delight in taking photos with the life sized celebrity figures that line the lobby walls. I sure did enjoy that mini activity. I also love how it’s a real walk down memory lane when you check out the posters, statues and displays of movie characters and icons. The kids will love it!

There is also a remodeled snack bar and games area to keep everyone happy. And best of all, the movies shown here are slightly past their peak viewing period which reflects in the ticket prices!

15. Phoenix Rock Gym in Tempe

The Phoenix Rock Gym is the place to climb, and an attraction where you can experience the world of climbing as never before! The Rock Gym has thirty foot high walls with a vast amount of climbing service area. I love this place and other thrill-seekers will surely do too. Just thinking about the challenge makes me very eager to visit again.

And don’t worry if the family have never experienced rock climbing before, as the highly trained staff are there to teach you about all the skills needed to climb safely.

The gym has 56 top ropes with everything from easy routes to overhanging arm blasters, faces, cracks, chimneys, and lots more. It is a perfect venue for pre teens and teens to expend some energy and learn some really useful climbing skills.

16. Kiwanis Recreation Center

This beautiful 54,000 square foot complex has a bit of everything for everybody, from a fabulous indoor wave pool, gym, fitness center, awesome tennis center with 15 lighted courts, to dual courts for volleyball and basketball leagues.

There are various classes on offer too, so it’s worthwhile checking out the Center’s programs as well. This is really a great place for the family to spend some quality time together, perhaps even enjoy a float-in movie too!

I love that the center is sheltered. It makes play time in the pool without getting sunburned even better!

17. Painting with a Twist

This is an opportunity to experience a painting class in a BYOB setting, and a very comfortable experience it is too! For a reasonable price, bring your favorite bottle of vino (or soft drink if the kids want to come along) and enjoy an afternoon of painting with an instructor.

I love how you don’t have to buy and bring your own painting supplies. Painting with a Twist provide all painting supplies as well as cups and wine openers, and there is a large choice of painting subjects to opt for, from cityscapes and landscapes to abstracts, florals, animals, and many others.

For any hopeful artists, group pictures of your masterpieces are posted on the company’s Facebook site at the end of the class! I highly recommend going here for that exposure.

18. Full Throttle Power Sports Tours

Whether a novice, a little experienced, or an advanced rider, this company can offer you a fabulous family fun day out! For an adventurous person like me, this is what heaven looks like. With the choice of a four wheeler ATV or dune buggy, experience loads of excitement powering up and down the nearby sand dunes and mountains, and through the beautiful desert cacti! And, if you’re more of a water lover than landlubber, Full Throttle Power Sports also rent jet skis for you to glide along the waters in safety and with the full knowledge that the machinery is safely maintained.

19. Arizona Distilling Co

A fact still surprising to some; despite the prohibition repeal of December 1933, no whiskey has been legally made in the Phoenix metro area until Arizona Distilling Company arrived in 2013!

It wasn’t an overnight historical change, however, as the company then spent a good few years refining technique and sourcing local grains, the general (and first) result being Copper City Bourbon, which had been barrel-aged for two years and named after an Arizona brewery shut down during prohibition.

The company has since branched out with small batch gin and Desert Durum Wheat Whiskey. Why not drop by and enjoy a tour conducted by one of the very welcoming and informative owners? The one hour tour includes three 0.5oz pours. I tried it, and it’s good. You can tell so much work was put into that.

20. Changing Hands Bookstore

What I love about Tempe is it caters to everyone. No matter what type of person you are, there is a place for you. I have listed several places for adventure lovers. But how about the bookworms? Well, I’m glad to inform you that one of the two Changing Hands Bookstores is in Tempe. This bookstore chain has been a favorite stop for presidents, rock stars, diplomats, Pulitzer Prize-winning authors and the town of Tempe has been one of its lucky recipients too! This literary treasure trove has a continuously changing mixture of new, used and sale books arriving from many sources, including its customers! Books are sold at competitive prices and if slightly shelf worn, you can probably pick up some bargains at very reasonable prices, often between 30% – 60% below the original list price. A perfect way for the readers of the family to spend some time.

8 Awesomely Fun Things to do in Tempe, Arizona in 2024

If you’ve never visited Tempe, Arizona, now’s the time to plan a trip! I just spent a long weekend in Tempe exploring this artsy, outdoorsy college town of about 200,000 just east of Phoenix and to the surprise of no one at all – I loved it! Tempe has everything that makes a smaller city thrive – a bustling university presence (Arizona State), excellent food scene, art museums and theater venues, impressive architecture and even a lake for watersports. With so many things to do in Tempe, the only question is why you haven’t started planning a visit yet!

Where is Tempe?

Tempe is a city just east of Phoenix, in Arizona near the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert in the Salt River Valley. It’s pretty convenient to just about anything you might want to do in the Metro Phoenix area, plus it’s got charm all its own.

• Tempe to Phoenix – 10 miles / 20 minutes
• Tempe to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) – 4 miles / 10 minutes
• Tempe to Scottsdale – 6 miles / 15 minutes 
• Tempe to Sedona – 125 miles / 2 hours
• Tempe to Flagstaff – 150 miles / 2.5 hours
• Tempe to Las Vegas – 310 miles / 5 hours
• Tempe to the Grand Canyon – 240 miles / 4 hours

Tempe is about 10 minutes’ drive to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), known as America’s Friendliest Airport. It’s one of the US’ busiest, serving  45  million passengers a year as a hub for both American Airlines and Southwest. 

3-Day Tempe Itinerary

So you’re in town to drop a kid off at ASU or maybe you’ve got Hamilton tickets at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed ASU Gammage, but you want to know what to do with the rest of your long weekend in Tempe. I’ve got you covered with this fun things to do in Tempe itinerary, designed for summer heat, but applicable to any season.

Day 1 in Tempe 

Arizona heritage center.

First stop, the Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park . This is a must-visit for the first time visitor to Arizona! The 48th state has a fascinating history, spanning Native American cultures, agricultural innovation, desert life and explosive growth after WWII. A visit to the Heritage Center will give you context for the rest of your visit.

Explore Mill Ave 

Tempe’s main street is Mill Avenue, named for the Hayden Flour Mill at the northern edge of town. The 100-year-old mill is still standing as a landmark to Tempe’s early days, when the town was little more than a ferry crossing over the Salt River. Now, it’s filled with quirky shops, bars, restaurants, art installations and thoughtfully, lots of misting fans on the outdoor patios. 

Nighttime Flashlight Tour of the Desert Botanical Garden 

Plant ladies of the world unite! And hey, even if you’re not a plant lady, this was such a fun adventure for all ages. I grabbed a flashlight and made my way out to the famous Desert Botanical Garden just before sunset for a self-guided tour through 140 acres and 50,000 species of cactus, trees and flowers from a mesquite bosque, semidesert grassland and upland chaparral.

If you don’t know what any of that means, no worries. There are docents stationed throughout to guide you and answer any questions. Sunset in the desert is just not to be missed. What a treat!

Tip: This is the ideal way to see the Desert Botanical Gardens in the summer when daytime is too hot for extended outdoor explorations. 

The flashlight tour is available on Saturday nights throughout the summer. Tickets are required.

Day 2 in Tempe 

Hike “a” mountain.

One more “A” and it would be a mountain just for me! “A” Mountain is the nickname for Hayden Butte thanks to ASU’s “A” logo up top, and it’s a super popular hike. While steep, it usually takes less than an hour roundtrip to complete the mile-long trail. Many Tempe residents hike it at lunch time to get their steps in.

In the summer, it’s recommended that you not attempt this hike at midday. Every so often I looked out my window at the Tempe Mission Palms to see one lonely maniac RUNNING to the top of “A” Mountain in 115-degree heat. And that is just not advisable for the majority of humans. 

Tip: When temps are hottest, hike “A” Mountain at sunrise or sunset. Don’t rush the hike or you might miss the rock drawings left by Tempe’s earliest citizens!

The beauty of visiting the desert is that it’s sunny almost always, so factor in some down time at your hotel’s pool for frosty beverages and a splashy afternoon no matter what else is on the agenda. Just be sure to bring a big floppy hat and high SPF sunscreen. 

Tempe Mission Palms Hotel, where I stayed, has a gorgeous pool with cabanas, a snack bar and sunshine to spare. 

Shopping in Tempe

Tempe has excellent shopping, from all the big chains you’d expect at Arizona Mills, a huge entertainment and outlet mall, to Tempe Marketplace, an outdoor shopping area with water features and instagrammable art installations. 

Day 3 in Tempe

You’ve got several options if you’d like to get out on Tempe Town Lake and take in the views of the light rail crossing over the bridge, beautiful desert sunsets and the flight path into PHX. Stop in at Boat Rentals of America – Tempe Town Lake to rent kayaks, paddle boats, electric boats, stand-up paddle boards and some fantastic giant swans.

And if the lake itself doesn’t interest you but the 7 miles of paved path surrounding it does, there are scooter and bike rentals available, too. Tempe Town Lake’s surrounding park areas are the perfect spot for a sunset picnic and they’re dog friendly. 

Board Games at Snakes and Lattes Tempe

Stop here for yummy lunch with a side of competition! I didn’t have anyone to play boardgames with on my solo road trip, but I was so impressed by the setup – amazing food, craft beverages, coffee and hundreds of board games to choose from – that I thought about how I could bring Snakes and Lattes to Florida.

Then I got lost in my iced chai latte and the hilariously competitive friends at the table next to me playing Trivial Pursuit to the death – well, almost.

Is this all the things to do in Tempe, Arizona? Ha – I’ve barely scratched the surface! But it’s a great start for a weekend itinerary so you can get the lay of the land and plan a longer Arizona trip in the future – like I absolutely plan to do!

Where to Stay in Tempe, Arizona

Tempe mission palms hotel & conference center.

Tempe Mission Palms was one of the best hotels I’ve visited in a long time. The interior is reflective of the desert surroundings, with cactus wallpaper in the elevators, succulents in colorful pots on wood tables and some of the most beautiful chairs I’ve ever seen. (What – you don’t get excited about chairs?!)

The service was so good, so personalized, that I almost forgot travel isn’t always so lovely – ha! The hotel’s location can not be beat. Right in the heart of downtown, I was able to walk to Tempe Town Lake, all the ASU attractions and facilities and endless food/shopping options like Snakes and Lattes, Culinary Dropout and House of Tricks.

I stayed in an incredible corner suite overlooking downtown Tempe, the ASU Sun Devil Stadium and “A” Mountain. (When you go, ask for room 4090!) There are also courtyard view rooms overlooking the fountain and tall palm trees, and pool view rooms, too.

Weather in Tempe, Arizona 

Many of you have asked why in the world I chose to visit the American Southwest in the summertime. Arizona is one of the few states I haven’t been to (other than via layovers at PHX), so I thought: why not plan an Arizona road trip on the end of my Las Vegas adventure ? So what if it’s June… how hot could it be?

Friends, it was toasty … in the sense that I felt like I was a piece of cinnamon raisin bread in an industrial toaster. I imagine there are better months to visit Arizona in general than the dead of summer, and lucky me, I happened to be there during an extreme heat wave. All that said, the desert landscapes never cease to be breathtaking, even if the best way to view them is from the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle, which I highly recommend.

Believe it or not, summer is a wonderful time to take advantage of off-season travel deals in Tempe, Ariz., so if you can handle the sunshine (hey, it’s a dry heat!), then it might make sense for you to visit from June – August. 

Now, if crisping up like a Brussel sprout is not your idea of a good time, hang on a few months for what I hear is the most spectacular weather. After Halloween is when the temps drop and to a cool 75 on average through the end of April.

This 3-day Tempe itinerary works for all seasons, too, so feel free to use it any time of year. 

I know I just said that if I were ever to move again, I’d consider moving to Tupelo – the last place I visited before Tempe. But now I want to add Tempe to the list, too.

There are many activities at the Mill Avenue district, and watching the Arizona University games is part of them. You can also choose to stroll to the Tempe town lake with your partner or kids while you bask in the cool evening breeze.

4. SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium

16. Jump in the Waters at Big Surf

It’s all in the name, this waterpark is the perfect place to visit for an exciting day out in the waters with your whole family. It has a range of pools to get soaked in for different swimming levels.

With slides and a wave pool that are always on the move, you can easily spend your whole day at Big Surf without a worry.

1. Make A Splash

The  Kiwanis Pool , the Valley’s only indoor wave pool, does not disappoint when it comes to water fun. This climate-controlled pool features 3-foot waves in various patterns and a 122-foot-long spiral water slide. With raft and tube rentals available, this is the perfect pool for the entire family. 2. Sky-High Swimming

Tempe hotels offer a variety of sky-high options for swimming, soaking and sunning. One thing these rooftop pools all have in common is the exceptional views. So, grab a cocktail, a cabana, some light bites and a dose of vitamin D — then be sure to stick around for the stunning summer sunset too.

3.  Take to the Lake

The weather is warm, not too hot, and perfect for a lovely boating excursion a Tempe urban oasis in the desert: Tempe Town Lake and Kiwanis Lake.

Boats of all types can be rented at Tempe Town Lake, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pontoon boats, pedal boats and electric boats. They open at 10 a.m. every day.

The Kiwanis Park location rents kayaks and pedal boats and is open on Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

4. Get Sporty

In 2023, Grass Clippings at Rolling Hills debuted as Arizona’s only fully lit, 18-hole golf course and practice facility that’s available day and night. Located less than 2 miles from Downtown Tempe, this hilly course lives up to its name with quite a few elevation changes. Golfers will find a trendy, player friendly oasis — juxtaposed against the sandstone buttes of Papago Park. Take in views of the surrounding mountain ranges and skylines from the 8th hole (the course’s highest point) and keep an eye out for Sonoran Desert animals after dusk. 5.  Under The Sea

Located in Arizona Mills, SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium is designed to provide a fun, interactive and educational experience for kids (and adults, too). You can easily spend the entire day at Arizona Mills , as it is the state’s largest indoor, climate-controlled outlet destination. 19. Biking in Tempe

Take your bike out and explore 217 miles of bikeways, including bike lanes, desert trails and canal paths. Ride around Tempe Town Lake, down Mill Avenue or in Papago Park.  Visit the City of Tempe website for additional information.

20. Self-Guided Mural Tour

Enjoy the  City of Tempe’s public art collection , and you’ll be amazed at the creativity all around the city. From live theatre to concerts to museum exhibitions, you will notice art shows up in unexpected places.

If you want to explore Tempe’s street art scene, we suggest hopping in your car for a self-guided driving tour of a few of our favorite  Tempe murals .  You can see all of these works of art from the road or a parking lot. Germiest places in schools: How to help your students only come home with homework

NORTH TEXAS –  As the new school year gets underway, those fresh, sweet back-to-school faces won't stay that way for long. With the oppressive heat keeping students confined indoors, they're sharing toys, the "tea" and a lot of germs.

"I wouldn't say 'freaked out,'" said Kyle Oholendt, a Methodist Dallas internist, pediatrician and dad to an adorable toddler. "I am excited for kids to go back to school. But yeah, I definitely think there's ways we can maybe keep them from bringing those germs home."

For Pre-K mom Pilar Villalba, it all begins with prevention.

"Like eating vegetables, fruit… and yes, the vaccines, too," said Villalba, while adding that she's glad that 4-year-old Eduardo has been healthy. She says she trusts her school to help keep him that way.

Dr. Oholendt says the guidance for avoiding school-day germs will vary with the age of the scholar, but parents need to practice healthy habits at home.

"One hundred percent. I think modeling good behavior is something I would recommend for any parent," Dr. Oholendt said. "And as a parent myself, I know it is not easy to always do. But washing hands, covering your mouth when you cough, teaching them about germs and just telling them, 'here's how Mommy or Daddy keep themselves safe from this.'"

Doctors say including some hand sanitizer in that back-to-school supply list is also a good idea. So where are those school-day germs lurking?

According to Lysol, a manufacturer of disinfectant products, the germiest places in schools are the restroom door, cafeteria trays and lunch boxes, desks, classroom supplies and the drinking fountain.

"Going back to school is just the big time for colds. Flus," Dr. Oholendt said. "We've already started to see more COVID than we were seeing over the summer. So, I definitely expect—not a surge—but for there to be a bump in how many, you know, sick people we're seeing."

He said the best way to avoid a sick visit to the doctor is to stay current with recommended vaccines.
