Onsite benefits like fitness and wellness centers embody our philosophy that taking care of Googlers is good for all of us. Build team skills with a group cooking class or coffee tasting, ride a gBike to one of our cafés, or work up a sweat in a group class. Here at the Googleplex, we’re looking for innovators, collaborators, and blue-sky thinkers. We’re looking for you.

We work in close collaboration with academia, with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this in two ways: by releasing software libraries, a way to build research findings into products and services, and through publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

Our team in Pittsburgh conducts research in natural language processing, machine learning, image and video understanding, and optimization, and our impacts range from academic paper publications to software systems used throughout Google. We collaborate closely with research and applied groups in many areas, and also work closely with Carnegie Mellon University and other organizations in the extremely strong computer science community in Pittsburgh.

As our company headquarters, Mountain View and the surrounding offices in Sunnyvale, San Francisco, and San Bruno are home to many of our world-class research teams and the innovative projects they work on.

Our research teams in Seattle and Kirkland work on a wide range of disciplines — from quantum computing to applied science to federated learning and health. In doing the above, and more, a large focus of our work also focuses on advancing the state of the art in machine learning.

Nestled between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the San Francisco Bay, with San Jose to the south, San Francisco to the north, and NASA right next door, you’ll find one of Google’s largest and newest global campuses in Sunnyvale. Here in the heart of the original Silicon Valley innovation is happening everywhere—from our Cloud team developing exciting new products and services, to moving into our latest office spaces which include interconnected building projects, the creation of green spaces connecting campuses with the community, and the creative restoration of local habitats. We love growing in Sunnyvale—and you will too.

We develop novel neural network architectures and learning algorithms, with applications to computer vision, natural language and speech processing, medical image analysis, and computer architecture and software.

Meetups in 2023

In 2023 RSE-AUNZ restarted organising regular local meetups. You can fill out this form to express your interest in a local meetup or volunteer to be a coordinator. Currently, we have coordinators for Canberra, Brisbane, Parkville in Melbourne and Monash in Melbourne. Coordinator roles take about 2 hours a month, 1 hour for choosing a regular date/time/location to meet and emailing reminders to the mailing list, and 1 hour for going to the meetup itself .

About the RSE movement

The Society of Research Software Engineering , originally coined the term “Research Software Engineer”, says the following about RSEs:

“A growing number of people in academia combine expertise in programming with an intricate understanding of research. Although this combination of skills is extremely valuable, these people lack a formal place in the academic system.” (link) .

Inspired by the success of the RSE Association in UK, we established the RSE Australia and New Zealand Association in 2017. Together with international bodies and support from our national organisations such as AeRO, New Zealand eScience Infrastructure ( NeSI ), the Australian Research Data Commons ( ARDC ), and research institutions, we aim to campaign for the recognition and wider adoption of the RSE role within the research ecosystem. We also want to advocate for appropriate recognition, reward and career opportunities for RSEs. We plan to organise regular events to allow RSEs to meet, exchange knowledge and collaborate on methods to create these opportunities.

We conducted an initial “Expression of Interest” survey in 2017 among Australian and New Zealand researchers and found that a majority of the respondents prioritised:

  • Increased recognition of the RSE role,
  • More appropriate, consistent and representative position descriptions and KPIs, and
  • Community development through regular events and gatherings.

Please join us to actively work on growing this community and advocating for others. Together, we can build a sustainable community that benefits research software engineers, and ultimately contributes to more efficient and reproducible research.

Code of Conduct

We are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all of our members. All participants in our events and communications are expected to show respect and courtesy to others. This is why we have a Code of Conduct .

The International Network of RSE Associations was established as a loose grouping of the people leading national associations, but in January 2021 the International Council of RSE Associations was created as a forum to communicate and formally meet to ensure cohesion between associations and to provide a platform for open discussion around international issues and affairs. For more information, please see the Council page.
