the family man telugu movie review

The Family Star Review: Star Doesn't Twinkle

The Family Star Review: Star Doesn't Twinkle

Movie: The Family Star Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: SVC Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Vennela Kishore, Jagapathi Babu, Rohini Hattangadi, Achyuth Kumar, Vasuki, Ravi Prakash, and others Music Director: Gopi Sundar DOP: KU Mohanan Editor: Marthand Venkatesh Production Designer:   A.S. Prakash Producers: Raju- Sirish Story, screenplay, dialogues and Direction: Parasuram Release Date: April 05, 2024

Vijay Deverakonda and director Parasuram Petla reunited after a gap of over five years following their successful collaboration in the blockbuster film "Geetha Govindam".

The hype and promotions were good. Has the film truly met the expectations and have the duo been able to recreate their previous magic?

Story: Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda), a middle-class young man, has many family and financial responsibilities to handle because his two brothers and their children rely on him. He is an architect who works for a small firm in Hyderabad.

Indu (Mrunal Thakur), a student at Hyderabad Central University, rents the upper portion of his home and quickly becomes close to the entire family.

Govardhan and Indu start to like each other. As Govardhan prepares to propose to her, he learns that she rented the house and became close to his family for the sake of her project.

Shocked by the news, Govardhan vows to teach her a lesson and accepts a new position at a large corporation run by an industrialist (Jagapathi Babu). As soon as he starts this new work, he encounters another twist.

The rest of the story is about Govardhan and Indu overcoming their misunderstandings.

Artistes’ Performances: Vijay Deverakonda delivers a credible performance, conveying a range of emotions including stinginess, aggression, and simplicity. Vijay Deverakonda also gets to do three fights (two of which are superfluous), although he generally plays a simple middle-class youngster. While his performance is spotless, his characterisation lacks strength.

Mrunal Thakur doesn’t get much scope. Her role and sequences with Vijay Deverakonda in the first half are entertaining, but she plays little role in the second half other than maintaining a solemn expression throughout.

Jagapathi Babu has very minimal screen presence.

Among the other actors, Rohini Hattangadi's performance as grandma lends value to the proceedings. There are numerous actors in the film, including Vennela Kishore and Achyuth Kumar of 'Kantara' fame, but none of them make a significant effect.

Technical Excellence: Gopi Sundar's songs worked well. Two songs, "Nandanandana" and "Kalyani Vacha Vachaaa," are both catchy to hear, although we only see the former in the film, while the latter is used after the end credits. The remaining tracks provide little value.

Veteran cinematographer KU Mohanan has provided lush frames to this family film with his distinct style.

Parasuram Petla is noted for writing humorous scenarios and emotive dialogues. However, he has failed in comedy this time, and the emotional dialogues are more preachy.

The film has an excessively long length and plodding narrative; the editing should have been sharper. The production's design and values are classy.

Highlights: Vijay Deverakonda Interval bang

Drawback: Cliched screenplay Lack of entertainment Lengthy runtime for thin story Times Square scene and total US sequences

Analysis Director Parasuram Petla is noted for narrating stories in an entertaining manner. His films, like Trivikram's, are centered on family drama and fun moments, with dialogues dominating the show. The combination was great in "Geetha Govindam," but he failed miserably in "Family Star." Director Parasuram Petla has run out of ideas, as evidenced by "Sarkaru Vaari Paata," and "Family Star" further proves that.

By the end of the film, you question what Parasuram was trying to convey with this story: 'the man' who will go to any length for his family, or the standard 'Geeetha Govindam' template of hero and heroine trying to clear their misunderstandings about each other.

The film opens with Vijay Deverakonda's story as a family man who accepts all burdens. There is a character played by Ravi Prakash, the protagonist's brother, who was preparing for civil services examinations but failed and turned to drinking. This track is similar to Chiranjeevi's "Gang Leader". But the explanation presented for the gap between Ravi Prakash and Vijay Deverakonda is ridiculous.

Despite the fact that nothing happens in the first half and the film moves slowly, Vijay Deverakonda's screen presence and Mrunal's love track keep the audience engaged. In addition, the interval twist is extremely interesting. This sequence is the highlight of the entire movie.

But the film entirely loses track once Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal leave for the United States. The entire proceedings in the United States are totally boring. The Times Square sequence in which some women mistake him for a male prostitute is cringe-worthy.

The second half is a cliched stuff with the hero and heroine attempting to clear up any misunderstandings. Even these segments would have been enjoyable if Parasuram had told them in an interesting manner. His primary strength as a director is comedy. But there isn't a single scene that makes you chuckle.

Furthermore, the runtime is too lengthy. As a writer Parasuram excelled only in the second part of the first half until interval. Rest of all is contrived, forced and mundane.

It is also a criminal waste to use the song "Kalyani Vacha Vachaa" after the film has ended.

Overall, despite Vijay Deverakonda's credible performance and pleasant interval bang, "Family Star" suffers from a slow-paced narration, a lack of emotional depth and lack of entertainment. If this film had been made in a concise style and featured comedy, it would have been a decent watch. Or else it would have been elaborated to make it as a TV serial. At the end of this 2 hour 45 minute ride, it provides little entertainment and more dullness.

Bottom Line: Lengthy Journey

A middle-class strict-budgeted Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda) meets Indhu (Mrunal Thakur) when she becomes a tenant at his penthouse. He falls for her but puts her away when he realizes she got close to him for a project work. Govardhan joins an elite company and to his shock, he bumps into Indhu there. How did things go after that? How Indhu handles Govardhan’s hate? All these questions are answered by the Family Man.

Performances

The Family Star has a very weak plot. Vijay Deverakonda is alright in a few scenes and over the top in many. He could have done better if the narrative is good. Surprisingly, Mrunal Thakur’s magic did not work in the Family Star. She just stole the show in her last two films in Telugu, but her character was poorly written and she’s got nothing great to perform here. Vennela Kishore could not bring any laughs. Senior actress Rohini is wasted. Jagapathi Babu gets a brief role, and his presence is not much felt. Other actors like Vasuki, Abhinaya did the needed.

Technicalities

The Family Star has good production values and everything else is a letdown. The background music is not impressive. Two songs are good. The screenplay is sluggish. The dialogues could have been a lot better. There is no emotional connection and it always appears like a series of scenes.

Production Values Two Songs

Thumbs Down

Weak Story No Emotional Connect Screenplay

With the producer of Shatamanam Bhavathi assuring The Family Star is a perfect family movie from the same production house, the expectations went a little higher than usual. But this Family Star is nowhere close to it and is disappointing. It is the story of a financially disciplined middle-class man who falls in love with a woman but part ways after knowing what she has done to him. The Family Star is completely lost in the narration.

The first half has all the cliched sequences to establish a middle-class family. The ‘budget’ cut is known in any middle-class family, but many episodes are simply over the top. His preaching contradicts his acts in many scenes. The narrative goes flat all along and the conflict between brothers is unconvincing. The ‘Irone vanchala’ fight sequence is good but lengthy. The conflict between the heroine and the hero looks very artificial.

The logic just dies when the person who counts every penny before spending spills a two-year advance salary just to boast he is not poor. The so-called twist before the interval is predictable.

While the whole first half appears like a staged setup, the second half goes to its extreme with just a series of unrealistic and unconvincing sequences. The USA scenes are very artificial and mostly boring. The so-called comedy with Vennela Kishore in the US did not work out. There will be a flood of impractical scenes in the US backdrop. For instance, the fight scene and the cause for it have been used umpteen times so far in Telugu cinema. Even the montage song has overused gestures and scenes. The ‘prostitution’ scene is tiresome and unwanted. The narrative goes clueless and finally, the clarification on the actual conflict between the lead couple makes no sense. The climax pulls down whatever is left with completely ineffective storytelling.

The Family Star has many flaws. The man who is so careful in everything falls for a girl whom he does not know anything about. Most of the conflicts in any middle-class family get sorted when they talk, but the conflict between this ‘peddodu and chinnodu’ takes months and leaves the former a drunkard. The chemistry between the lead pair did not work. Not just the template, but many sequences of the Family Star appear like that of Geetha Govindam, but unfortunately, it fails to recreate the magic.

Overall, barring the performances of a few cast members and production values, there is nothing that this Family Star offers. The outdated story, lack of emotional connection, and sluggish screenplay become a bigger burden than a heavy EMI for the Family Star.

Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur starrer The Family Star hit screens today amidst huge expectations. Delve into our review to know how it is.

Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda) is an architect from a modest background, dedicated to supporting his brothers and their families. The arrival of Indu (Mrunal Thakur), a student, as a tenant in his home marks a significant turning point in his life. However, when everything seems to be going smoothly, Govardhan is confronted with a shocking revelation from Indu. Who is she, and what is her connection to his life? The answers to these questions unfold as the story progresses, which needs to be experienced on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Vijay Deverakonda entertains as a middle-class man, embodying the thoughts and behaviours typical of that societal stratum. His performance in family scenes is commendable.

Mrunal Thakur excels in her role as Indu, effectively portraying the character’s evolution before and after the interval. The lead pair’s on-screen chemistry adds charm to the proceedings.

The songs are well-composed and visually appealing on the big screen. Additionally, intermittent comedy adds to the overall enjoyment.

Minus Points:

One would anticipate compelling emotional scenes in this genre. However, the film falls short in delivering such moments. Despite Dil Raju’s claim of Family Star being a substantial love story, it fails to leave a lasting impression.

While there is potential for emotional depth, the movie primarily lacks it. Parasuram Petla’s minimal focus on the screenplay makes several scenes feel drawn out.

The placement of songs feels inappropriate, and Gopi Sundar’s background score lacks impact. The second half pales compared to the first, with a few scenes diminishing the viewing experience.

The comedy fails to elicit sufficient laughter, with Vennela Kishore’s talent being underutilized. Jagapathi Babu’s limited screen time and the fleeting presence of other characters further weaken the narrative. Also, there are a few loopholes in the script.

Technical Aspects:

Parasuram Petla’s direction and screenplay fail to engage, lacking strength and cohesion. Gopi Sundar’s music, though satisfactory in songs, falls short in enhancing key moments. While cinematography and production values are decent, editing could be improved for a better narrative flow.

On the whole, The Family Star entertains to a certain extent. Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur deliver fine performances. However, the film’s slow-paced screenplay, lack of emotional depth, ineffective background score, and weak storyline are the notable drawbacks. If you can overlook these aspects, it may still be worth a watch this weekend.

The Family Star (2024) Movie: What's Behind

Today marks the highly anticipated release of Family Star, starring the charismatic Vijay Devarakonda and directed by the talented Parasuram. Following their previous blockbuster collaboration with "Geetha Govindam," expectations are sky-high for this latest venture. Adding to the excitement is the inclusion of the stunning Mrunal Thakur as the female lead, known for her captivating performance in "Seetharamam."

With such a stellar cast and the promise of an engaging storyline, curiosity levels are soaring among movie enthusiasts. As audiences flock to theaters, all eyes are on Family Star to deliver another unforgettable cinematic experience. Stay tuned to discover what this film has in store for movie lovers everywhere.

The Family Star (2024) Telugu Movie: Story Review

Family Star tells the story of Govardhan (Vijay Devarakonda), a young man who shoulders the responsibility of supporting his middle-class family. He takes care of his two brothers, their wives, children, and grandmother, sacrificing his own desire to marry.

The narrative takes an interesting turn when Indhu (Mrunal Thakur), a charming young woman, enters his life. The film explores the consequences of this unexpected development and how it impacts Govardhan's life and responsibilities.

Vijay Devarakonda's Family Star: Artists Review

Vijay Devarakonda delivered a commendable performance, portraying his role with a natural and realistic approach. He displayed good mannerisms and dialogue delivery, effectively using expressions to leave a lasting impression. However, some viewers might find his character reminiscent of his previous roles.

Mrunal Thakur appeared stunning on screen and initially performed well. However, her character seemed to be typecast, limiting her opportunities to showcase her full talent and elevate the scenes. Compared to her earlier appearances, some viewers might notice a slight change in her physical appearance.

Supporting actors like Jagapathi Babu, Vennela Kishore, Rohini Hattangadi, Victoria Grace, Marissa Rose Gordon, Divyansha Kaushik, and Ajay Ghosh all delivered performances that suited their respective roles, contributing effectively to the overall narrative.

Family Star Telugu Movie: Technicians Review

The storyline of Family Star, penned by Parasuram, seems to borrow heavily from previous films, offering little in terms of novelty. The portrayal of a young protagonist burdened with the responsibilities of a middle-class family is a trope seen many times before. The conflicts between the brothers and the hero-heroine seemed forced and unconvincing on screen. However, the presence of Vijay Devarakonda and Mrunal Thakur made the first half somewhat bearable.

Expectations were high for the second half to bring a fresh narrative, but it disappoints. The real estate track and the scenes of Vijay Devarakonda in the US seem to irritate viewers. Apart from a few dialogues in the beginning and during the pre-climax, the story feels thin, affecting the screenplay and direction by Parasuram.

Gopi Sunder's music fails to leave an impact. The songs lack entertainment value and fail to resonate with viewers. While his background score elevates a few scenes, overall, it is average. K.U. Mohanan's cinematography is decent but not exceptional. Marthand K. Venkatesh's editing leaves many parts of the film feeling dragged, missing the opportunity to make the narrative more engaging. However, the production values are commendable.

Family Star: Advantages

  • VD and Mrunal
  • Few Dialogues

Family Star: Disadvantages

  • Missing Emotions
  • Weak Conflict
  • Outdated Scenes

The Family Star Telugu Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether, Family Star falls short as a routine and outdated entertainer. Despite spirited performances from Vijay Devarakonda and Mrunal Thakur, the film fails to ignite due to Parasuram's inability to meet the high expectations set after "Geetha Govindam." The cringe-worthy narration, weak storyline, and lackluster script all contribute to the film's downfall. Taking all these factors into consideration, Cinejosh gives a 2.25 rating to Family Star .

'The Family Star' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Comments

Vijay Deverakonda's latest movie 'The Family Star' has been released on Friday. The movie has Mrunal Thakur playing the female lead with Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki, Abhinaya, Vennela Kishore and others in the supporting cast.

Gopi Sundar has scored the music, KU Mohanan has handled the cinematography and Marthand K Venkatesh has edited the flick.

The Family Star Review

Govardhan (played by Vijay Deverakonda) is an architect hailing from humble beginnings, committed to providing for his brothers and their families. The story gets a turning point with the entry of Indu (portrayed by Mrunal Thakur), a student who becomes his tenant. Just when life appears to be on an upward trajectory, Govardhan is blindsided by a startling revelation from Indu.

Who is she, and how does she intertwine with his life? The unravelling of these mysteries is a cinematic experience best savoured on the grand stage.

Review Vijay Deverakonda has done in role well as a middle-class man. Particularly, he shines shining in family-oriented sequences. Mrunal Thakur impresses with her portrayal of Indu, skillfully depicting the character's growth throughout the narrative. The palpable chemistry between the lead pair adds an extra layer of allure to the film.

The songs are meticulously crafted, offering both auditory pleasure and visual splendour on the expansive canvas of the big screen. Furthermore, well-timed comedic moments contribute to the overall delight of the viewing experience. On the flip side, the movie fails to engage the audience as it lacks strong emotional content.

The songs' placements and weak storyline do not help the cause.

What netizens say about the movie? Check out

Venky Reviews: #FamilyStar is an inferior template rom-com family movie that has a few time-pass moments but no real emotional connection nor feel good moments. First half is underwhelming and feels like a serial until the pre-interval. Second half starts on a more fun note but quickly turns uninteresting and preachy. Music is very ineffective. The blockbuster combo of GG disappoints. Below Par! It is high time that VD steps out of his comfort zone and stops doing these monotonous template roles. His performance and character worked very well in GG but in this it feels repetitive and leaves no impact at all.

Parasuram tried to copy the same template structure of GG but fails in recreating the same magic. There is a scene in America where American girls think VD is a prostitute and start attacking him in the middle of Times Square in New York... not sure what Parasuram was thinking when writing scenes like that.

Prashanth Rangaswamy: #TheFamilyStar Interval - simple story , beautiful narration . Easily the best @TheDeverakonda movie in recent times ! Will connect big time with family audience ! Awaiting second half !

Family Star review: Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur’s family drama tests your patience

Family star review: parasuram petla’s vijay deverakonda, mrunal thakur-starrer defies logic in a plot that’s already wafer-thin..

Family Star review: When it was announced that Vijay Deverakonda was teaming up with director Parasuram Petla for the second time, many hoped they would recreate the magic of Geetha Govindam (2018). That film had its own issues, but Family Star struggles to make a mark or even entertain. The Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur-starrer tests your patience, with things only going downhill as the film progresses. (Also Read: Vijay Deverakonda calls his father his Family Star; shares unseen old pictures: ‘You are my strength, my hero’ )

Family Star review: Mrunal Thakur and Vijay Deverakonda in a still from the film

Family Star story

Govardhan Rao ( Vijay ) carries a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. He might have two older brothers (Raja Chembolu, Ravi Prakash) and a grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi) but he takes it upon himself to run the family, despite being the youngest. He is careful with the family’s finances, constantly reiterating how many kashtalu (problems) he has. When Indu (Mrunal) rents a portion of his home, she changes his life in more ways than one.

Family Star review

The plot of Family Star is so wafer-thin; you can see through it like one of the CGI dosas Govardhan makes for his nieces and nephews early on in the film. But even within the realm of what it is, Parasuram’s film defies logic, making it difficult to sit through. Even worse, it almost feels like Family Star was written by someone who doesn’t know what living a middle-class life is like, making the whole attempt feel caricaturish.

The biggest issue Family Star suffers from is a lack of emotional depth. Everything in the film feels superficial. You don’t feel anything for the lead characters, let alone the supporting ones, with no proper explanation for their motivations.

The supposedly responsible Govardhan often lets out his inner man-child, yet you never understand why those around him put up with any of it. Indu also hides something from Govardhan, but the big reveals (yes, plural) involving her character, come across as plain silly. And the less said about the friction between Govardhan and one of his brothers, the better.

The chemistry

While the core point of Family Star is Govardhan’s pursuit of giving his family a better life, a lot of the film also hinges on his love for Indu and vice-versa. And yet, Vijay and Mrunal hardly have any chemistry, except in a few scenes. That’s not their fault though because Parasuram doesn’t give them space to breathe or a chance to flourish.

He instead chooses to focus on scenes that are meant to be funny, but the jokes don’t really land. There’s an unnecessary scene where Govardhan is mistaken for a prostitute which is played for gags, but all it does is make you cringe. So does his behaviour at the work place. This is why it’s ironic that the infamous ‘iron ee vanchala enti’ (do I need to bend the iron) fight scene unintentionally make you laugh.

Vijay and Mrunal

The only thing Family Star has going for it is Vijay and Mrunal ’s performances. Have we seen better performances from Vijay? Sure. But he’s earnest in playing Govardhan. So much so, that the character’s idiosyncrasies get on your nerves because he plays them so well. He stands out in the film's few emotional scenes, where his character is allowed to feel the hurt, instead of just anger.

Mrunal looks stunning as Indu and tries to give her best, but her lip-sync is so off in the film, that it distracts you from her performance. She gets an emotional monologue at the end, but all you can see is how the words don’t match her lip movement.

In conclusion

Family Star could’ve been a simple, earnest film about a man taking up the responsibility of a massive family and finding love. We could’ve also gotten a film where the protagonist is content with his circumstances till he’s forced to face reality. Instead, you get a film that feels stretched, filled with ridiculous plot points and speeches that make you feel like you're in a time warp. Overall, it’s a shame that Vijay, Mrunal and a cast featuring names like Rohini, Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki and Abhinaya were wasted in a film as middling as this one.

‘Family Star’ Public Review; Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur Fail To Impress

April 5, 2024 Daita Dasgupta Entertainment , Movie Reviews , South Indian Movies 0

the family man telugu movie review

Telugu film ‘Family Star’ starring  Vijay Deverakonda and Mrinal Thakur was released on April 5, 2024. The film is produced by Dilraju and Shirish under the banner of Sri Venkateshwara Creations and directed by Parasuram.

Vijay Deverakonda and Parasuram have earlier given a massive hit with their film “Geetha Govindam.” Hence, there has been a lot of buzz regarding the release of “Family Star” amongst the audience.

Public response

Plot of ‘Family Star’

The film’s official synopsis read – “The highs and lows of family relationships in an Indian middle-class family. The life of Govardhan, who wants to achieve greatness in life but has to navigate through a myriad of relationship/trust/ego issues.”

The film features Vijay Deverakonda as the ideal family guy ready to put his life at stake to keep his family out of harm’s way.

The audience is fascinated at this avatar of Vijay, who does housework and takes care of kids, but at the same time, is strong and takes pride in sharing responsibilities with his wife, shedding off his male ego of restricting his duties only to monetary requirements and official work.

“Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘Family Star’ glimpse is proof that he’s not just an actor but a phenomenon. His charisma and mass appeal are unparalleled. This movie promises a blend of class and mass like never before”, wrote one fan.

Actors Mrunal Thakur and Vijay share on-screen space for the first time. This film marks the third installment in the Telugu film industry after Sita Ramam(2022) and Hi Nanna(2023).

Vijay’s movie release date coincides with his rumored girlfriend Rashmika Mandanna.

Vijay took part in a kitty party with other senior actresses as a part of the film’s promotion where he was asked whether the release date of his film had to do with anything related to Rashmika’s birthday.

Vijay smiled and replied – “Yes, it’s Rashmika’s birthday. I think it will be lucky for us.” This further stoked Vijay’s alleged romantic relationship with Actress Rashmika Mandanna. It is also said that the duo are expected to get married soon. However, the two have them have kept mum about the allegations.

‘Family Star’ releases on April 5, 2024.

The Family Star review: It is impossible to bailout this poorly-conceived family drama with Vijay Deverakonda’s unusually cool presence

Director Parasuram Petla shows Vijay Deverakonda as a responsible family man Govardhan who would die for his family.

The Family Star (Telugu)

  • Main Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Rohini Hattangadi, Vennela Kishore
  • Director: Parasuram Petla
  • Producer: Dil Raju
  • Cinematography: KU Mohanan

If you’re a fan of Vijay Deverakonda, you will never get tired of watching him playing silly characters — be it a corporate professional, a romantic hubby, or a family man.

And the role Govardhan that he played in The Family Star is something you will never want him to play again.

Govardhan is not the usual youngster you often see in your neighbourhood because his boy-next-door appeal is somewhat tweaked to suit the theme of the story.

He is more a family man than a romantic boyfriend — bogged down by too many responsibilities, his pocket is too tight to impress a girlfriend. He has his grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi), two elder brothers (an unemployed, drunkard Ravi Prakash and Raja Chembolu), sisters-in-law (Vasuki and Abhinaya), and their five kids to take care of.

Goverdhan prioritises every penny of his pay according to the requirements of his middle-class family. Here’s when a rich Central University student named Indu (Mrunal Thakur) enters his life.

What conflict arises when a typical middle-class man like Govardhan tries to forge a relationship with a girl from a rich family?— is the story.

The Family Star is a romantic drama

‘The Family Star’ is a romantic drama. (X)

This family drama, boasting a responsible protagonist, is unimaginably slow-paced in the entire first half.

Director Parasuram Petla shows Vijay Deverakonda as a responsible family man who would die for his family. The protagonist has a distinct personality with a set goal.

The story has a unique perspective, family dynamics, and a conflict that a story requires.

The film fails to convincingly establish the central conflict or tension that drives the drama forward — the soar relationship between Vijay Deverakonda and his brother Ravi Prakash.

Also, there is no proper reason why Ravi Prakash becomes quite normal after slapping Vijay in a scene!

But what makes the first half bearable is Vijay’s screen presence.

Mrunal’s introduction adds a feel-good factor to the already boring story. However, the interval scene of the quarrelling pair keeps the audience hooked to the screens.

The second half shifts to the US. Here is where director Parasuram must regret not posing a few fundamental questions himself about what makes The Family Star a compelling watch.

Of course, it’s not the picturesque locations of the US that make audiences sit for another hour.

You could expect Parasuram to make the character Govardhan undergo a slight change. But to the contrary, the protagonist becomes more cranky and cringe when he lands in the US. He is unmindful of the fact that it could cost him his job!

The characters of the lead pair have clear arcs, however, with poor writing. Some scenes depicting Govardhan as a successful man finishing his project in the US are poorly conceived.

Even in a scene in the first half, a corporate professional like Govardhan thrashing baddies black and blue does not make sense. Why would a cool, responsible family man fight a street thug for a property settlement?

Vijay Deverakonda, as Govardhan, is unusually cool. The perfection he brings in every frame is simply eye-pleasing for his fans.

Mrunal Thakur, as Indu from a rich business family, is appreciable. But for most of the second half, she remains mute.

Other actors, including Ravi Prakash, Vasuki, Rohini Hattangadi, and Ajay Gosh are good but have nothing to do.

Another disappointing aspect of The Family Star is its music scored by Gopi Sundar. The music does not stick with the audience long after you leave the theatre.

Of the three songs, “ Kalyani Vacha Vacha” is the only song closely associated with the fans. But it comes five minutes before the end credits, thus disconnecting with the flow.

KU Mohanan’s cinematography is good.

The editing part by Marthand K Venkatesh should have been good, at least for films which constantly fall back after every scene.

Banking solely on Vijay Deverakonda’s screen presence, this family drama is an attempt to mint money. It lacks an honest motive to tell a compelling drama as promised by producer Dil Raju.

The Family Star Review - A Pointlessly Loud Emotional Drama!

The Family Star Review - A Pointlessly Loud Emotional Drama!

The Family Star is a romantic drama starring Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles. The Geeta Govindam combo reunites, a Parasuram directorial and the music is scored by Gopi Sunder.

Premise: Vijay Deverakonda is a middle class man who lives by calculated budgets as he is financially responsible for his entire family. How the equation changes when Mrunal Thakur enters their house as an upstairs tenant, and the changes that follows is the crux of the story.

Writing/ Direction: The film missed out on holding onto some of the basics, right from the beginning. You name the movie ‘ The Family Star ’ that portrays the life of a middle class man, but how can the audience believe he is one when you give him a heroic introduction. Not just his entry, even the follow-up character establishment scenes are so exaggerated, like the hair-thin Dosa made in CGI to show his budget control, and an over-the-top fight sequence to showcase his short-tempered attitude. There are four action stretches in total, and there won’t be any changes to the story if they are removed as whole bunches; they were absolutely pointless to the flow. Initial portions of Mrunal Thakur are delightful and gave some sort of hope, but again the screenplay went off-track with so many deviations by forcefully creating problems for Vijay Deverakonda’s family members. Vijay’s brother is shown as an alcoholic, no one cares about the character including the viewers, he could have been left as it is, but they tried to justify it with the lamest flashback ever. Interval high is very much there, and the story actually takes a good step forward. But unfortunately, again the focus goes for a toss in the second half with many ridiculous situations that are irrelevant for the subject, like the male prostitution scene at Times Square, suddenly going path-away by bringing in a politician in the pre-climax, etc. There are some cutely staged romantic moments in the latter half, and sadly they are watered down when the director tries to serve it as full meals. It was hard to connect with the egoistic love-hate relationship between the lead pair, hence there was no emotional attachment over the characters.

Performances: Vijay Deverakonda does well and he is actually in the right stage of his career to portray such a character, but some parts of the execution feature him as a superstar, that drains out the values behind the intention. Mrunal Thakur shines yet again. She instantly captures the hearts with her subtle performance and sweet presence; she owns the little goodness that is there in the movie. Jagapathi Babu plays a business tycoon as usual, in a mindless character this time around. Vennela Kishore’s comedy doesn’t click to that extent, as the timing dialogues failed to bond well with the situations. The grandma character stood as a neat support till the end.

Technicalities: Two songs namely ‘ Nandanandanaa ’ and ‘ Madhuramu Kadha’ are pleasant, magic is missing in the rest. Worst background score by Gopi Sunder. Music at many places oppositely resonates the mood of the offered situation. The fight scenes are treated with random slogans and what not. Decent cinematography, not a fascinating work but the cameraman has provided what is apt for a love story. Poor editing with many jump cuts that disturb the continuity, and there are many unwanted scenes that lag beyond limits. Easily, the film could have been 40 minutes lesser. Fight sequences here give a mass film vibe, and with weak reasoning for the action portions, they land as nothing but big bummers.

There is a beauty in simple romantic stories packed by strong emotions. Despite having the scope, The Family Star tries to be so much more with needless exaggerations and grandeur, in which the basic thread is lost. Rating - 2.25/ 5

‘Family Star’ movie review: Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur cannot salvage this incoherent muddle

Director parasuram petla’s telugu film ‘family star’, starring vijay deverakonda and mrunal thakur, is an incoherent chaos that is neither interesting nor entertaining.

Towards the intermission of the Telugu film Family Star , when a crucial twist is revealed, the protagonist Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda) walks away, slowly realising the magnitude of what has just unfolded. He rolls his eyes, shrugs his shoulders and tries to walk with his swagger intact, letting reality sink in. A similar reaction and emotion might describe how this reviewer felt at different times of the film, trying to decipher what exactly the film’s director Parasuram Petla , who has co-written the film with Vasu Varma, intended to convey. The second collaboration of Parasuram and Vijay Deverakonda, years after Geetha Govindam , starring Mrunal Thakur as the female lead, is neither interesting nor entertaining.

True to its title, in the first hour, the narrative depicts how Govardhan, a middle-class family man who shoulders responsibilities, is a star who wears his attitude on his sleeve. He might be heavily budgeting his household expenses (he makes gossamer-thin dosas to make the batter last longer!) that includes his grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi), two brothers, sisters-in-law and their children. He considers his responsibilities as his duty rather than a burden. And, he is no pushover. He can flex his muscles and bend iron if needed; the #AiraneVanchalaEnti episode is designed to cater to the star playing the middle-class man. All these small things, one hopes, will eventually add up to the masala family entertainer.

Family Star (Telugu)

However, several questions arise as the film unfolds. Some of them, like his sour relationship with his older brother, are answered eventually, though superficially. It doesn’t help that except for Govardhan, the other family members have little room to make any impression.

The initial interactions between Govardhan, his family and their new tenant Indu (Mrunal Thakur), supposedly a student at the University of Hyderabad, provide some fun. Each time she calls Govardhan ‘yevandi’, something flutters in him. But the romance, even till the end, is never explored convincingly enough to make us root for them.

As the scene shifts to the US, the film completely slips into a zone where anything goes in the name of a plot. There is no reason why Indu, a CEO of a leading infrastructure company, does an anthropological thesis on a middle-class man. The differences in strata between Govardhan and Indu, with his aspiration to raise the standard of living for his family while not letting go of his egoistic nature, and she quietly asserting herself while also wallowing in guilt, are also not explored well. All we get are a series of patchily-written incidents.

Every now and then, the underlying aggression in Govardhan’s character is leveraged to underline Vijay Deverakonda’s image as a regular guy who can turn volatile. When he remarks that everyone is judgemental or has a philosophy, it nearly breaks the fourth wall.

Throughout the 2 hour 35 minute runtime, the film presents several dialogues about middle-class lives and aspirations, the struggle for recognition in corporate settings and the concept of middle-class superstars. However, these points lack a cohesive narrative to anchor them.

When the writing remains muddled, there is nothing the actors can do to salvage the material. Vijay Deverakonda remains charming and energetic, but this film does not tap into his acting potential. Mrunal is saddled with a sketchily written character and after Sita Ramam and Hi Nanna , the romance in this film is rather pale. Several others, including Divyansha Kaushik, Rohini Hattangadi and Vasuki, have nothing to do. The usually resourceful Vennela Kishore is cast in a role that can be described as decent but nothing memorable.

Family Star does no justice to the family quotient or the star material. It is an interesting idea to raise a toast to the star of every middle-class family but that idea is lost in a film that gets progressively boring and tests your patience. The family audience deserve better.
