  • Formatting:  The body of your cover letter should be single-spaced, with double-spacing between paragraphs for easy reading. 

Opening paragraph:  Like your greeting, your opening paragraph is where the recruiter will glean their first impression of you. State your interest in the job and mention one or two relevant credentials. Don’t be generic here, like: 

I am interested in the sales consultant role at your company. I have three years of relevant sales experience in an adjacent field. 

This doesn’t tell the recruiter anything they don’t already know, and if you’re trying to get a sale on the street with this introduction, they’ll walk past you without a second glance. Instead, try:

For each paragraph, discuss one clear and relevant accomplishment relevant to the job description requirements. Be detailed and specific, and quantify your results whenever possible like this:

Having developed specific experience in both B2B and B2C sales during 3 years at Adobe, I know how vital it is to foster the business-to-client connection, especially in our current digital age. My understanding of B2C marketing gave me a unique perspective in empathizing with our clientele’s pain points to help me exceed target sales metrics by 6% each year. To do so, I habitually nurtured viable sales leads by following up on them at designated intervals and establishing a two-way street by not just listening to their problems but also resolving them whenever possible. 

This paragraph tells the reader about specific, industry-relevant experience and links this experience with company values and metrics to further justify the candidate’s successful skill application. 

Closing paragraph:  You’ve done well introducing yourself and selling your capabilities as a competent candidate for the job; now, finish it with a sentence summarizing how your values and qualifications align with the company’s needs. Add a call to action at the end for some extra polish. This is bad: 

I think I’ll do well in this sales consultant role. Thank you for your time and kind consideration. 

It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, and as a salesperson, one of the key personality traits is confidence, both in your product and in yourself. Instead, try something like:

Signature:  This is the time to say “thank you” if you didn’t do so in the closing paragraph. Use a professional close like “sincerely,” or “best regards,” along with your real name. 

  • Formatting : If you’re sending any hard copies of your cover letter by mail or in person, make sure to quadruple-space, so you have room to sign your name in blue or black ink. 

Enclosure(s):  The sale isn’t final until all documents are complete. State “Enclosure(s)” at the end of your cover letter to let the reader know there’s more to come. 2. How To Greet the Employer

Here is where you greet your potential employer. It has two parts: the contact info and the salutation. First, include the same contact info you included for yourself, but relevant to the hiring manager: their name, basic info and company name.

Then greet them.

You can pick from a number of ways to do this, but if you know the manager’s name, that’s the simplest. “Dear Ms. Lannister” is always better than a “Hi there,” “Greetings,” “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” The former two are too casual, while the latter couple are old-fashioned and make it look like you haven’t bothered to look up their name.

Note: If you can’t be sure of someone’s pronouns, opt for a neutral “Dear Hiring Manager Lannister” or their full name.

3. The Introduction

As with anything else, you have very little time to make a good impression if you want the job. Whether you’re in software sales or yacht sales, you need to punch it right from the beginning.

The introductory paragraph should emphasize why you are an ideal candidate. Remember that this paragraph needs to entice the employer to read further, and readers will lose interest in a boring introduction. Include why you’re applying, any notable sales goals you’ve met or awards you’ve won, and a lead-in to the following paragraph.

Example: I was very excited to see the position of sales manager open at Winterfell Enterprises. In my ten years as an inside sales rep for Targaryen Inc., I have acquired a notable sales record, always meeting my quotas and earning Salesperson of the Year in 2020. I feel strongly that I’d be a great addition to your company as a sales manager.

4. The Body

Here’s where you flesh out your skills and achievements in more detail. Include items such as:

  • Work experience
  • Sales experience and sales skills
  • Communication skills
  • Time management abilities
  • Achievement or award track record

Note that you should avoid bullet points, though you can use them in your sales resume. The same goes for detailing aspects of your education, with the exception being your degree (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, etc.), which is appropriate to mention.

Mostly, this is a sales pitch that should include why you’re the best candidate for the job. Your existing knowledge and abilities are critical to whether or not you can land the role you’re looking for, so don’t hold back. While you should never brag or pass on compliments you’ve gotten, you should share exactly why you would be a good fit for the position.

Bad example: I’m told I’m the best salesperson if you have a difficult deal that no one can seem to close.

Good example: I have consistently proved myself as an asset to my employers, closing more than a dozen deals last year that other employees were unable to nail down.

5. The Conclusion

The last paragraph of your sales cover letter should include a summation, references, and the fond wish that you hear from the hiring manager again. It’s okay to use humor here as long as it is tasteful and doesn’t become the focus on the letter.

Example: Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. My references are happy to hear from you at any time, and hopefully they will say nice things about me like they promised. I look forward to speaking with you if they do.

If you prefer a more serious tone, simply express your gratitude and desire to hear from them again.

Republican House members ask House speaker to investigate Ryan Walters — but speaker declines

Twenty-two members of the House of Representatives' Republican caucus have signed a letter asking House Speaker Charles McCall to launch a special investigation of state Schools Superintendent Ryan Walters , The Oklahoman has learned.

The letter, written by Rep. Mark McBride , R-Moore, has quietly been circulating among House GOP members for several days. It was still being circulated on Tuesday.

The letter was signed by McBride and Reps. Rhonda Baker, Mark Vancuren, Ronny Johns, Tammy West, Danny Sterling, Jeff Boatman, Mike Osburn, Daniel Pae, John Talley, Marcus McEntire, Ty Burns, Eddy Dempsey, Nick Archer, John George, Preston Stinson, David Smith, Josh West, Ty Burns, Ross Ford, Brad Boles and T.J. Marti. McBride said he provided the letter to other members of the GOP caucus to "add their names to this letter as a demonstration of the broad-based support that exists among our members to commence immediately with a formal investigation."

McBride said he sent the letter after news accounts reported the Oklahoma State Department of Education took away funds it had once promised to state school districts to make security improvements to protect students’ lives after the shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas.

However, Tuesday afternoon Republican House Speaker Charles McCall shot down McBride's request.

In a message sent to the GOP caucus, McCall acknowledged the letter, but said many of the areas requested to be investigated "are best addressed in the committee hearings which are conducted by the Legislature pre-session when we ask the agency to account for the dollars appropriated and the agency's plan going forward."

"I take elections very seriously, and anyone who was duly elected by the people of this state should not be removed from that office, given to them by the people, unless absolutely required by the constitution," the speaker's message said. "Unless and until 51 or more Republicans sign the letter and request the investigative committee be formed, I will not consider the request."

The Legislature, McCall said, does not conduct criminal investigations. "From the documentation attached to the request, it appears that the attorney general is aware of the potential violation. Investigations by the Legislature are limited to the use of appropriated dollars and internal discipline unless the AG finds a criminal violation did occur and the state superintendent is charged and convicted with a crime. In that case, the House would likely have something to consider," McCall wrote.

What to know about the letter calling for an investigation into Ryan Walters

McBride's letter asked McCall to create a Special Investigative Committee on the state Education Department, "whose responsibility is to investigate to the fullest the internal and external failures of the Superintendent and the State Board of Education to follow the law, to address budgetary concerns of the Constitutionally established appropriators and to make recommendations to the Legislature for the upcoming session regarding safeguards, reforms and, additionally, any possible willful neglect of duty or incompetency on the part of Superintendent Walters as described in Article 8, Section 1 of the Oklahoma Constitution."

McBride said he'd grown "increasingly concerned about the budget performance, spending priorities and transparency surrounding the Department."

He said conditions at the state Education Department, the manner in which the superintendent and the Oklahoma State Board of Education have treated members of the Legislature from both parties from both the House of Representatives and the state Senate "has been, to say the least, unprofessional, beneath the dignity of a statewide elected official and most importantly, contrary to the best interest of the taxpayers and students of the State of Oklahoma."

McBride's letter listed several other problems with Walters including:

  • Over past two months,  Walters has refused to allow state legislators  — both Republican and Democratic — into the board’s executive sessions, even though their presence is allowed under the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act and the attorney general’s office sent Walters  a letter  stating such. In the July meeting, the board skipped an executive session listed on the agenda, which the attorney general’s office believes could also be a violation of that law.
  • Refusal or significant delays in answering inquiries from the House and Senate education committees. "You are well aware of the long-standing issues of responsiveness by Superintendent Walters and the Department," McBride wrote. "This unresponsiveness required the issuance of two legislative subpoenas under your signature."
  • Failure to turn over complete information surrounding the expenditure of state funds for travel. McBride said members of the press have received more complete information from the Office of Management and Enterprise Services than members of the House Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Education.
  • Failure to fill in a timely manner numerous requests for records as required by the Open Records Act, which has resulted in Attorney General Gentner Drummond threatening civil and criminal action for such failure.
  • Defying the Legislature's appropriations authority by refusing to execute required funding for critical asthma inhalers . Such defiance has resulted in Walters blaming legislative leaders, including Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Chuck Hall.

"This pattern of overreach, disregard for legislative oversight and policy making and lack of concerns for student safety and budgetary stability led me to write this letter," McBride wrote.

McBride wrote he repeatedly met one-on-one with Walters and "pled with him to please focus on the responsibilities and duties of his office and work with the Legislature to improve and advance the cause of public education in Oklahoma."

"These pleas have fallen on deaf ears," McBride's letter said. "And the superintendent has chosen to pursue and aggressively opposite path, one filled with name-calling, obstruction, defiance and secrecy."

How Ryan Walters has responded

Tuesday, Walters told the Oklahoma City television station KOCO 5 that if lawmakers launched an investigation, "it would be the most unprecedented move in state history to undermine the will of the Oklahoma voters."

"Oklahoma voters elected me wildly into office," Walters said. "It was over 10 percent of the vote that put me into office. What we've seen is a group of moderate Republicans that have partnered with Democrats. These are folks that want pornography in your kids' school. These are folks that don't want the Bible in school. They have been attacking Christianity. These are folks that do whatever the teachers' union tell them to and they want to bring back an era of the teachers' unions controlling our schools."

Walters continued, saying, "we're not going to allow that."

"We're going to put parents and grandparents in charge of their kids' education," he said. "We're going to continue to put Okahoma on a path to be successful in education. So I will never back down to moderate Republicans partnering with Democrats to try and overturn the will of the people. We're not going to allow it."

The letter is the second example of anger at Walters from House Republicans to surface this week.

On Monday, three GOP state representatives — Josh West, of Grove; Ty Burns, of Pawnee; and Chris Banning, of Bixby — released a statement reacting to the "disparaging comments made by State Superintendent Ryan Walters about Bixby Public Schools Superintendent Rob Miller after a disagreement over delayed Title I allocations."

The comments from the three lawmakers came after a back-and-forth between Miller and Walters. On the social media site X on July 27, Miller questioned why there has been a long delay in the state Education Department informing school districts about how the amount of their federal funding allocations under Title I.

Title I money is allocated based on the number of low-income students served by families. Those numbers, provided to districts by the agency’s past administrations in late spring or early summer, are vital in helping districts plan budgets and determining how many teachers they could hire. The fiscal year began on July 1.

After the board meeting four days later,  Walters called Miller “a clown and a liar”  and hinted of potential financial improprieties within the Bixby district. In response, the Bixby district released a clean annual audit and said Walters had engaged in “baseless defamation” of district employees. Miller demanded an apology for Walters’ personal insults.

On Aug. 1, the agency sent an email to school districts saying all federal allocations, including Title I, would be published by this Friday, Aug. 16.

"As former military leaders, we know the qualities that define good leadership: Loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Just as important are the lessons on how not to lead," the lawmakers said in their statement. "Over the past four years, we've witnessed Ryan Walters' often questionable leadership and tactics."

Ryan Walters draws complaints over closed executive session, Bible mandate

In addition to the comments he made about the Bixby superintendent, Walters has drawn complaints and concerns on multiple other issues in recent weeks.

Within the past two weeks lawmakers said Walters violated the Open Meeting Act when he denied legislators access to executive sessions, deprived districts of rolled-over money meant for school safety and now is putting children's lives at risk by withholding appropriated funds for emergency asthma inhalers.

In June, he issued a memo  mandating the Bible be taught  in every Oklahoma classroom, although the attorney general’s office has said that under state law, decisions about classroom curriculum are reserved to local school districts. Most of Oklahoma’s larger school districts have said they will follow state law regarding academic standards and thus won’t follow the directive.

Monthly meetings of the state Board of Education have cultivated controversy during Walters’ tenure. People often arrive in the wee hours of the morning — or simply spend the night — on the steps of the Oliver Hodge Building, hoping to grab a seat  in the small space  in which board meetings are held and perhaps address Walters and the board. Walters has ignored pleas to move the meetings to a larger space. In March,  building security used a cable  to tie together the entry and exit doors to the building.

In November, Walters began  limiting the amount of people  who could participate in the public-comment portion of the meeting to 10. Beginning in April, Walters also moved public comments to the end of the meeting, forcing those who wish to address the board to wait through hours-long closed sessions and other presentations. He’s also  instituted a lottery  for those wishing to speak, instead of allowing them to speak on a first-come, first-served basis.

During the public-comment portion of the meeting in April,  six Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers arrested an unarmed woman  in front of her crying, disabled son, and left the child in the room, without a parent, after they said she was disrupting a meeting. Since then, a barrier has been erected in the small room to separate the board from the few members of the public who do make it into the meeting space. Those entering the building now must go through security checks and media members representing one local television station are not allowed in the main meeting room.

In mid-July, Drummond  sent a letter to Walters  expressing concern about the slow pace at which the state Education Department was filling information requests made under the Oklahoma Open Record Act, saying, “SDE’s inaction on these critical requests is unacceptable.” A spokesman for Walters blamed Walters’ predecessor for leaving a large backlog of requests and “far-left activists in the media” whose requests he portrayed as “the weaponization of the open records process.”

Walters is, or has been, a defendant in at least 12 lawsuits in state and federal court. In one of those cases, a judge has  issued a protective order , at the request of a Moore student, against Walters and the board, to keep them from revealing the student’s identity in court proceedings.

Though McBride's request for an investigation is the first time GOP members in the House have publicly called for an investigation of Walters' reign as the state's top education official, it follows a fifth request from House's Democratic Caucus, made last week.

On Aug. 9, the Democrats issued a media statement asking the Republican supermajority to create a special bipartisan committee to investigate the state superintendent after stories surfaced about how the state Department of Education is taking funds the legislature allotted school districts for security enhancements.

The House Democratic leader, Rep. Cyndi Munson, of Oklahoma City, has long believed Walters' actions and inactions rise to the level of impeachment. Democrats hold 21 seats in the House of Representatives.

Munson said Democrats have continuously raised the concerns of Oklahomans regarding the state superintendent.

"On August 29, 2023, we called for a special bipartisan committee to investigate whether there are grounds for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach Ryan Walters. We renewed that call on December 15, 2023. On March 27, 2024, we renewed our call again after a report OSDE was potentially misusing federal tax dollars. We have written the Attorney General to request an audit of how these taxpayer funds are being spent, and we formally filed House Resolution 1052 for a special bipartisan investigative committee on May 29, 2024. It is past time to hold the State Superintendent accountable."

Tuesday, she said she was pleased by McBride's efforts.

“I’m glad members of the Republican Supermajority are joining our calls for action against State Superintendent Ryan Walters,” Munson said. “After a long history of allegations of misuse of federal tax dollars, inciting bomb threats and deadly violence in Oklahoma schools, and routinely ignoring the Oklahoma Constitution, it is time for Republicans to take action. Republicans hold the power in both legislative chambers and the Governor’s mansion — it is time for them to use their power to hold the State Superintendent accountable to the people of Oklahoma. We have all waited long enough.”

ANCHOR season begins soon: Homeowners and renters in NJ to receive automatic payments up to $1,750

That's when the popular ANCHOR property tax relief program officially kicks off. The Treasury Department's Tax Division will begin mailing letters to about 1.5 million New Jerseyans to confirm their automatic eligibility for this season's benefit.

The program gives renters a one-time payment from $450 to $700 and homeowners a payment from $1,000 to $1,750.

If the personal information listed in the letter (name, mailing address, and banking information if their benefit was distributed via direct deposit) has changed since their last ANCHOR payment, taxpayers will need to file a new application by September 15, 2024.

"The ANCHOR program continues to deliver on our promise of increasing affordability for millions of New Jerseyans. I'd like to thank the hardworking staff at the Department of the Treasury, particularly the Division of Taxation, for their efforts to make this crucial program convenient and accessible," said Gov. What is Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) ?

This program provides property tax relief to New Jersey residents who own or rent property in New Jersey as their principal residence and meet certain income limits. 

This season marks the third year the State will distribute ANCHOR benefits.

How can I apply for this benefit?
  • You were a New Jersey resident; and
  • You owned and occupied a home in New Jersey that was your principal residence (main home) on October 1, 2021; and
  • 2021 property taxes were paid on that home; and
  • Your 2021 New Jersey gross income was $250,000 or less.
  • All applicants have until Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, to file applications.
  • Most homeowners may  file online  with an  identification number (ID), PIN , and Passcode, or by using the ID.me verification function. However, if you bought your home in 2021, altered your deed, or had certain life changes such as a divorce or death of a spouse, you must file using the Special Circumstance Application.
  • You were a New Jersey resident; and.
  • Your 2021 New Jersey gross income was not more than $150,000; and
  • Your name was on the lease or rental agreement; and
  • You paid rent; and
  • You rented and occupied a residence in New Jersey that was your principal residence (main home) on October 1, 2021; and
  • The rental property was subject to local property taxes ( see Qualified and Non-Qualified Rental Properties ).
  • All applicants have until Saturday, November 30, 2024, to file applications.
  • Renters may file using  the online option , and do not need an ID and PIN.
When is the deadline to apply?

The deadline to apply is Nov. 30, 2024.

The Division will send ANCHOR Application Mailers with information on how to apply for the program to over two million residences beginning August 26.

What are the options to send the application?

The Division of Taxation continues to improve the process to make applying for the ANCHOR program more convenient and accessible. New this season, the Division has effectively eliminated the necessity for paper applications and launched a new online application for residents required to provide supporting documentation, who would have otherwise needed to file by paper in past ANCHOR seasons.

These applicants will now be able to securely upload their documents online. Paper applications remain available for those who prefer, or have special circumstances.

How to prevent scams?

As part of ongoing efforts to prevent fraud and safeguard taxpayer dollars, many applicants will need to go through an extra level of identity verification when applying for the ANCHOR benefit this season. Those taxpayers include:

  • New applicants;
  • Anyone searching for their ANCHOR ID/PIN at anchor.nj.gov;
  • Anyone who did not receive an ANCHOR Benefit Confirmation Letter or Application Mailer;
  • Anyone who no longer has their ANCHOR letter/mailer or the information provided on it.

In these cases, taxpayers will be prompted to create or use an existing ID.me account to verify their identity. Applicants also have the option of visiting one of the Division of Taxation's Regional Information Centers to verify their identity by showing a driver's license, passport, or other qualifying material. Additional information will be provided at anchor.nj.gov.

The Division of Taxation has doubled the number of agents available to assist callers to the ANCHOR hotline, as well as implemented an automatic callback feature, allowing residents to be placed in a queue rather than waiting on hold.

Letter carriers have reported systemic heat illness issues, resulting in multiple deaths: 

  • July 6, 2018, Woodland Hills, CA: Peggy Frank died in a non-air-conditioned mail truck. The temperature hit a record-setting high of 115. 
  • July 22, 2020, Washington, DC: Louise Franklin died in a non-air-conditioned vehicle. The high temperature was 94 degrees, and the heat index was 104. 
  • June 17, 2021, San Jose, CA: Dalvir Bassi died from a heat stroke. The temperature was 94 degrees. 
  • June 20, 2023, Dallas, TX: Eugene Gates died when the temperature hit 98 degrees with a heat index of 116. 
  • June 6, 2024, Fayetteville, NC: Wendy Johnson died shortly after a shift working in an un-airconditioned vehicle in 95 degrees.

The members of Congress released a letter today urging USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to “choose action over delay” and save lives by implementing the federal heat protections in his workforce now. With USPS failing to protect so many of its own employees, Casar and 70+ Members of Congress lay out a simple solution: begin following the federal heat rule proposed by the Biden-Harris Administration immediately.

“Our letter carriers deliver the mail no matter the weather, many times without air conditioned trucks or access to water,” said Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas) . “I’m calling on Postmaster General DeJoy to implement heat protections now for these federal workers. Too many USPS workers have died on the job. DeJoy can do something about it.”

“USPS has more than 300,000 mail carriers delivering our daily mail in extreme temperatures that have reached triple digits throughout much of the nation this summer. Many risk suffering from dangerous heat illnesses, heat-related injuries and even death.” said Juley Fulcher, worker health and safety advocate at Public Citizen, which has endorsed the letter . “The goal of the USPS should not be to do the minimum required by current law. The USPS should immediately implement the life-saving heat standard proposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.”

The letter urges DeJoy to:

  • Immediately implement the proposed standards in OSHA’s workplace heat rule.
  • Address systemic falsification of records related to heat illness prevention training.
  • Prioritize postal vehicle repair and replacement in areas where extreme weather can impact letter carriers’ safety.

“While the standards in the proposed rule are currently optional, the final rule will have the effect of law when published by OSHA,” the members wrote . “In the interim, the Postal Service is still required to protect its workers from extreme heat and can guarantee that they are meeting this duty with these standards.”

Big changes for ANCHOR property tax relief, and new deadlines. What you need to know.

The new ANCHOR property tax benefit season is officially underway.

The state Treasury Department will send notification letters on Aug. 19 to 1.5 million New Jersey taxpayers, letting them know their ANCHOR applications will be filed automatically , NJ Advance Media has learned.

The letters will tell homeowners and renters whose eligibility information the state already has that they don’t need to do anything to get their benefits as long as none of their information has changed since last year.

Then on Aug. 26, residents who did not receive a letter will get an application packet in the mail — green for homeowners and purple for renters — which will have the all-important ID number and PIN needed to complete the application.

New this year: Whether you get a letter or an application packet, if any of your information has changed, you’ll have a file a brand new application by Sept. 15, 2024, a deadline that’s earlier than years past.

Also new this year: Some taxpayers, including some who receive the notification letters and application packets, will need to go through an extra level of identity verification through ID.me . Those residents will be notified when they log in to anchor.nj.gov of the need for the extra step.

If you don’t receive a notification letter or an application packet, you can still apply, but you’ll first have to log in to anchor.nj.gov and verify your identity using ID.me. Once you do, your needed ID number and PIN will be provided on the screen.

The Treasury Department also said it has eliminated the need to file paper applications, something that used to be required, for example, by those filing on behalf of an estate or a trust, or by those who needed to share copies of documents to support name changes and changes in marital status. The agency is offering a new secure portal so people can upload their documents, it said.

But if you aren’t comfortable doing it all online, you can still download and print a paper application.

“You can still file by paper but there is no longer a need to,” the agency said.

The deadline to file a new application is nearly a month earlier this year. You have until Nov. 30, 2024 to file, the agency said.

All payments will be issued on a rolling basis beginning in November, the Treasury Department said in a press release. Last year, it initially said payments would start around that same time, but the first round of direct deposits went out on Oct. 12. More rounds of direct deposits and checks were sent in subsequent weeks.

The ANCHOR payments, which are for the 2021 tax year, will pay up to $1,500 to homeowners and $450 for renters, with senior homeowners and renters getting an extra $250.

ANCHOR Season Begins: A Record 1.5 Million New Jerseyans to Receive Automatic ANCHOR Payments

Division of Taxation Implements Innovative Changes to Simplify the Popular Property Tax Relief Program

(TRENTON) - Treasury's Division of Taxation will officially kick off the upcoming season of the popular ANCHOR property tax relief program next week, when it will begin mailing letters to about 1.5 million New Jerseyans to confirm their automatic eligibility for this season's benefit. The Division has also implemented a number of changes this season designed to further simplify the application process for new applicants and improve taxpayer experience.

"From day one, our Administration has strived to make New Jersey more affordable for residents across our state," said Governor Phil Murphy. "The ANCHOR program continues to deliver on our promise of increasing affordability for millions of New Jerseyans. I'd like to thank the hardworking staff at the Department of the Treasury, particularly the Division of Taxation, for their efforts to make this crucial program convenient and accessible."

"Since the launch of the program in 2022, ANCHOR has grown to be one of the most impactful property tax relief initiatives in New Jersey's history," said State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio . "ANCHOR is inclusive of New Jerseyans at all stages of life, from young people renting their first apartment, to retirees living in the place they've called home for decades. Continuing the streamlined application system implemented last season, the Division of Taxation will file applications automatically on behalf of most homeowners and renters who previously received an ANCHOR benefit. Beginning August 19, the Division will mail ANCHOR Benefit Confirmation Letters to approximately 1.5 million taxpayers to notify them that their application will be filed automatically. If the personal information listed in the letter (name, mailing address, and banking information if their benefit was distributed via direct deposit) has changed since their last ANCHOR payment, taxpayers will need to file a new application by September 15, 2024 by visiting anchor.nj.gov.

All payments will be issued on a rolling basis beginning in November. The deadline to file an application is November 30, 2024.

With the goal to reach eligible homeowners and renters who have not previously applied, the Division will send ANCHOR Application Mailers with information on how to apply for the program to over two million residences beginning August 26.

This season marks the third year the State will distribute ANCHOR benefits. Last season's program covering the 2020 tax year made history as the State's single largest property tax relief initiative, with over $2.1 billion in benefits distributed to more than 1.8 million homeowners and renters. Payments ranged from $450 to $1,500, with applicants over age 65 receiving an additional $250.

As part of ongoing efforts to prevent fraud and safeguard taxpayer dollars, many applicants will need to go through an extra level of identity verification when applying for the ANCHOR benefit this season. Those taxpayers include:

  • New applicants;
  • Anyone searching for their ANCHOR ID/PIN at anchor.nj.gov;
  • Anyone who did not receive an ANCHOR Benefit Confirmation Letter or Application Mailer;
  • Anyone who no longer has their ANCHOR letter/mailer or the information provided on it.

In these cases, taxpayers will be prompted to create or use an existing ID.me account to verify their identity. Applicants also have the option of visiting one of the Division of Taxation's Regional Information Centers to verify their identity by showing a driver''s license, passport, or other qualifying material. Additional information will be provided at anchor.nj.gov.

Additionally, the Division of Taxation continues to improve the process to make applying for the ANCHOR program more convenient and accessible. New this season, the Division has effectively eliminated the necessity for paper applications, working closely with Treasury's Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services and the State's Office of Innovation to launch a new online application for residents required to provide supporting documentation, who would have otherwise needed to file by paper in past ANCHOR seasons. These applicants will now be able to securely upload their documents online. Paper applications remain available for those who prefer, or have special circumstances.

Also in partnership with the Office of Innovation, the Division of Taxation worked diligently to make improvements to its call center operations to more effectively serve residents with questions about their ANCHOR application. The Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM), pursuant to the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945, as amended, facilitates the finance of the export of U.S. goods and services. As part of its continuing effort to reduce paperwork and respondent burden, EXIM invites the general public and other Federal agencies to comment on the proposed information collection, as required by the paperwork Reduction Act of 1995.

THOMPSON ANNOUNCES BIPARTISAN 79-MEMBER LETTER URGING SENATE TO PASS DISASTER TAX RELIEF, BILL ENDORSEMENT FROM BIPARTISAN POLICY CENTER ACTION

Washington – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) announced that a bipartisan group of 78 Members of Congress have joined him in urging Senate Leaders Schumer, Wyden, McConnell, and Crapo to take up the Bipartisan Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act (H.R. 5863). He also announced today that the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Action has endorsed the bill.

The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act passed the House in May and would retroactively exempt thousands of qualified wildfire victims in California, including PG&E fire victims, from having to pay federal income tax on their settlement money or pay tax on attorney fees that are included in the settlement. It also excludes from taxpayer gross income, for income tax purposes, relief payments for losses resulting from the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment on February 3, 2023 and designates Hurricane Ian, among other federally declared disasters, as a qualified disaster for the purposes of determining the tax treatment of certain disaster-related personal casualty losses.

“Through no fault of their own, too many Americans have incurred thousands of dollars in disaster-related expenses. It’s wrong to tax disaster victims on the settlement money meant to help them rebuild their lives,” said Thompson . “Thank you to my colleagues, Democrats and Republicans alike, for joining me to advocate for this much-needed relief for wildfire and other disaster victims. Thank you to Bipartisan Policy Center Action, as well, for recognizing the importance of this relief and endorsing this legislation. Now, Senate leadership must work with us to deliver tax relief to the disaster victims who have been waiting for it.”

The 79-member group sent a letter today advocating for Senate Leadership to take up the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. Rep. Thompson serves as the Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax. He introduced the original legislation to provide tax relief to PG&E fire victims in the 117th Congress and has worked to advance the legislation ever since.

In May, Rep. Thompson and Rep. Greg Steube (FL-17) led a bipartisan group of 218 Members of Congress to successfully advance a discharge petition which forced House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act to the House floor for a vote. The historic advancement of Thompson and Steube’s petition marked only the third time a House discharge petition has succeeded in the 21st Century. The bill passed with strong bipartisan support and Rep. Thompson and Rep. Steube continue to advocate for the Senate to take up the bill and pass it.

“Since the Senate failed to pass the bipartisan tax package, which included my bill to deliver tax relief, Senate leadership must now permit my stand-alone disaster relief bill to pass swiftly through the Senate on unanimous consent.” said Rep. Steube . “My bill precedes the larger package and received resounding support across the aisle in the House (382-7). Americans can’t wait for disaster relief. Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina sustained major impacts from Hurricane Debby, further underscoring the need to pass this bill as soon as possible. Millions of Americans affected by more than 300 disasters in 48 states will be helped by this legislation. The Senate must finish the job.”
