Consumers are becoming more aware of sustainability considerations in food production and consumption. In addition to the traditional dietary and nutritional requirements, consumers are seeking labels and certifications to know where and how food is made, what it is made from, its carbon footprint and sustainability credentials. UCL would like to investigate what information we should supply, how this should be displayed, communicated and marketed, to allow our communities to make informed decisions and promote a flexitarian diet. It is anticipated this would require the following activity:

  • Developing questionnaires for opinions on carbon footprinting, carbon pricing and other sustainability information they want to know about, to inform point-of-sale purchasing choices in outlets.
  • Comparing marketing of food as “vegan” or “plant-based” and the impacts on consumer’s perceptions.
  • Investigating the notion of “label fatigue “where consumers are overwhelmed by information on packaging, and the impact of the project on this.
  • Baselining data on food choices.
  • Developing a labelling system for packaging/ refectory display boards – using data and survey responses.
  • Trialling the labelling system.
  • Surveying responses.
  • Recording food choices and comparing to baseline, to identify behavioural change.

Living lab on biodiversity

Our aim is to create 10,0000m2 of extra biodiverse space by 2024 – equivalent to more than one and a half football pitches as well as increasing health and wellbeing for the Bloomsbury community.

  • Arrange a meeting with Sustainable UCL to ensure your project can make a valuable contribution to UCL.
  • Sustainable UCL can provide data and put you in touch with relevant operational staff such as catering members and plumbers to test out your ideas.
  • You can invite your supervisor to this meeting, but it is not a requirement.

Step 4: Undertake your dissertation

  • Sustainable UCL can meet a further 2 times or 2 hours maximum to support your dissertation or project.

Step 5: Sharing data and findings

  • One of the principles of the Living Lab Project is to make available any additional data you generate for others to build on, so the work can keep ‘living’
  • Once your dissertation is completed, we require a concise 2-3 page briefing or presentation on your findings so that we can implement your ideas onto campus or future students and staff can build on your research. Environmental/Sustainability bachelor & master thesis topic help

Finding a good topic for your bachelor or master thesis can be really difficult. Maybe your supervisor has an idea or two they advise you to write about. You might even have a few of your own that you’re thinking could be relevant, but you haven’t decided one way or the other.

But before I decided on that, I went through weeks of research to find a decent topic. This is what this article is about. I will let you know about all the different topics that you might (or might not) want to write about.

How to find a good topic for your environment thesis.

So here they are, the topics you can write about in your bachelor or master thesis when you study something related to sustainability or the environment.

Topic 1: Waste management

Waste management might sound boring. But it’s not. There is a lot to write about on this topic.

PS! I have divided every “master topic” into smaller topics. Remember that a school thesis on bachelor/master level should be quite narrow. The biggest mistake you can do is try to cover too much in one project, e.g. “What causes global warming?”.

A great example is what they do in Sweden where they turn their waste into heating:

*= A very good example here is the implementation of a tax that the Norwegian and British government both ruled out. The tax harmed consumers that wanted to buy single-use plastic items – and especially plastic bags from shops. In order to save money, people turned towards using reusable bags when they went shopping. And the result for the environment? Less plastic in the UK and Norwegian cost, according to scientists. Quite interesting.

Topic 2: Overpopulation

1) Lower mortality rates 2) Improved medical help in developing countries 3) Government regulations 4) And many more.

“Will we even survive?” type of topics

– Try to project how long it will take before we do not have enough natural resources to keep people alive . This could be done on a national or regional level, e.g. look at a developing country that sees a huge population growth, but at the same time got limited clean drinking water.

– Another idea would be to look at different projections for how many people there will be on this planet by year 2050. Hundreds of different scientists have made different projections based on what they believe will happen to humanity. Those can actually be quite interesting.

Topic 3: Food and drink

I would point out that I have previously written a long article about this topic. It is called: “ Why is eating meat bad for the environment? “. It contains a lot of useful information that you could use as inspiration to your thesis.

Another useful inspiration source is the previously mentioned movie “Before the flood”. If you got a couple of minutes, I would really recommend to at least watch the trailer:

– How bad are plastic straws for the environment? More and more cities and countries try to ban single-use plastic items, but how much damage do they really make? Also, are companies using the removal of single-use plastic items as a greenwashing tactic? We know that McDonald’s swapped out plastic straws with paper straws, but that doesn’t exactly make them an environmentally friendly corporation….

– Study the environmental impact of the global alcohol production. I have previously written an article about the impact that the illegal drug industry has on the environment. Doing research to that article was kind of scary. 🙁

Topic 4: Climate change

There are so many things to write about climate change. This is probably the number 1 topic when people are writing an essay or thesis about environmental issues. However, if you dig a bit deep into the topic, you might find some sub-topics that can be interesting to cover.

– What will be the consequences of a rising sea level and/or rising sea temperatures? Most of our ecosystems will be affected: people living in cities close to the sea, coral reefs that are dependent on a certain and stable water temperature, polar bears, etc.

– For the economic freaks: how much will climate change cost the different countries in the future? Some scientists have already pointed out various types of costs and the report was published in national geographic: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/09/climate-change-costs-us-economy-billions-report/

PS! Very interesting read if you got a couple of extra minutes. You could also get some serious inspiration there.

Topic 5: Tourism and traveling

– Make a historical report on how traveling have contributed to global warming over the last XX years. People have not only started to travel more frequently and over a longer distance, but we have also changed the way of traveling. More airplanes, fewer trains (in general).

– From a financial perspective, is it a good choice for the government to invest in bicycle infrastructure? You could use Copenhagen in Denmark and Amsterdam in the Netherlands as good examples.

Topic: Wildlife population & similar high-intensive research projects

Some topics are more difficult to cover than others. That is not only related to the information you have available, but also the complexity of coming up with something new during your thesis. Let us say that you choose the topic: “ Polar bear population – how will it look in the future? ”. The only information you could use are some simple projections made by one single source on how it will develop. The chances of you coming up with something revolutionary is very small. Unless you have good connections that can bring you to Canada, Russia or the North Pole to do some hands-on research in these areas.

1) Already have a lot of information available from various sources. 2) Presumably, a topic that has not been answered by any other research lately. 3) Something that does not require too much extensive research out in the field.

It would be interesting to find out, what type of people believe more in climate change and why, is it the younger generation that is thought about climate change in school, is it religion, is it dependent on age? Interesting, but how can I turn this into a worthy bachelor thesis question? – The difference in the water footprint of different diets, some diets pose themselves as eco-friendly, but this may not be so true as with the example of the avocado. My supervisor said this topic is not ethical, but I do really not agree with this. Could you please say what you think about this topic, maybe how could it be altered to fit a bachelor thesis?

1) I have never worked with water in households before. However, it seems to be a quite straight-forward thesis to write if you want to do a questionnaire. If your questionaire also contained information like salary, etc., you could use an angle of “do rich people waste more water compared to poor people”.

Turning on the heat? Global warming and corporate risk-taking

Heat is a common metaphor to describe interpersonal conflict. Strikingly, psychological research indeed suggests a link between heat stress and aggressive or asocial behavior. With global temperatures on the rise, one may wonder: what are the consequences of heat stress on corporate decisions? This thesis project will combine meteorological and financial data to test whether heat stress triggers systematic changes in corporate risk-taking, as one possible manifestation of aggressive financial decisions.

Shareholder activism and sustainability. Is shareholder activism a solution or a problem?

On the one hand, the term shareholder activism refers to an investment strategy of a small group of hedge funds which target underperforming firms in order to foster the implementation of financial or governance changes and capitalize on potential increases in shareholder value. On the other hand, shareholder activism refers to the actions of large institutional investors who engage with their target firms to push a non-financial agenda, e.g., better working conditions or higher investments into emission mitigation technologies. There are two possible variants of this thesis project: The first represents a systematic literature review in order to contrast both types of shareholder activism and identify positive as well as negative side-effects of both types of shareholder activism with respect to environmental, social and governance aspects. The second represents an empirical investigation into the non-financial effects of shareholder activism with respect to corporate ESG performance.

Investor objections to corporate sustainability Financial professionals report that some investors respond negatively to sustainability-focused marketing strategies to the extent that relationship managers maintain two slide decks to advertise sustainable investment products. The empirical literature suggests a positive or at least non-negative effect of corporate sustainability on financial performance. Yet, some investors remain reluctant to sustainable investment products. This thesis project aims to review the theoretical literature and explore the motives and rationales of investors who shy away from sustainable investment products.

The effect of disaster experiences on sustainability preferences

Extreme weather events are becoming ever more frequent and severe. While much research has addressed the contribution of the global economy to anthropogenic climate change, the behavioral implications of exposure to extreme weather on economic decisions have yet to be fully explored. A small but growing literature suggests that exposure to extreme weather events and natural disasters can have significant and systematic effects on the risk preferences of economic decision makers. Moreover, the attention-based view of the firm suggests that extreme weather exposure may also emphasize the importance of a stable environment as a basis for economic growth and corporate success. Within the context of this thesis project, the candidate will develop and implement a suitable regression strategy to test the impact of extreme weather exposure on sustainability preferences of households or firms.

Does the weather at rating offices affect ESG ratings of local firms? Several empirical studies show that local weather conditions can have a systematic effect on investor decisions. However, little is known about the specific biases in ESG ratings. Applying the rationale of investors mood effects to ESG rating agencies, theory may predict higher ESG ratings when raters are in high spirits and lower ESG ratings when spirits are low, ceteris paribus. Within the context of this thesis project, the candidate will gather establishment addresses for the major rating agencies and connect these addresses with relevant climate data in order to analyze how weather variables affect sustainability ratings of local firms.

Does distance between HQs and plants predict pollution intensity? A proliferating number of empirical studies suggest that air pollution has a detrimental effect on local property prices. If top managers and employees in strategic positions live close to corporate headquarters, their own residential property may be affected by local production facilities. Consequently, rational choice theory predicts that they will prefer to keep air pollution as far away from home as possible. Moreover, firms reduce the risk of litigation by keeping firms away from residential areas. This thesis project will combine data on corporate air pollution reported in the toxic release inventory, financial data and corporate location data to analyze whether there exists a systematic pattern to shift polluting activities to facilities further away from corporate headquarters and/or local residential areas.

Assessing physical climate risks for Altana Management Services GmbH

The importance of sustainability continues to grow at Altana Management Services GmbH. Altana is currently dealing with CDP reporting. The EU taxonomy, CSRD and in particular the TCFD are further topics that Altana will increasingly address in the future.

The effects of climate change on the company's own production are to be investigated as part of the master's thesis, i.e. the physical risks will be qualitatively assessed for the 50 production sites. In addition, the availability of materials is an important topic for the company, as climate change will also have an impact on the supply chain (including delivery times and quantities). Sales markets will also be affected. For this reason, Altana wants to systematically address future scenarios (for different warming scenarios (1.5 as well as 2 degrees), two time horizons) at the production sites that identify the risks and opportunities for the company.

The TCFD will serve as a framework guideline for this project. In a first step, only physical risks and opportunities of climate change will be addressed (e.g. risk assessment regarding future availability of biogenic raw materials or cooling water for production). In a next step, transitory risks, for example, can be investigated, as TCFD reporting by Altana could take place from 2023 onwards (outside this project).

In close cooperation with the Investment Division of HDI Germany, this thesis sets out to explore ways of integrating sustainability into the investment decisions of a listed insurance company. Among other things, a market and opinion analysis is to be carried out for this master thesis. Possible focus areas include how the insurance company can have a positive impact on biodiversity through their investments and how to deal with data issues in measuring the sustainability of investments and the disparity of definitions of what exactly falls under the term sustainable investment.

Development of a Scope 3 estimation method for industry sectors

Reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, those under the direct ownership and operational control of the business is usually the first target in a company’s carbon reduction strategy. However, to become truly carbon neutral, Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions released upstream and downstream in a company’s value chain, need to be prioritised too as scope 3 emission often contribute more than half of the total GHG emissions. With the introduction of the CSRD in the EU it will become compulsory for companies to report on their Scope 3 emission.

The GHG protocol has developed the framework for quantifying scope 3 emissions. Within the GHG protocol 15 sub-categories are further specified to cover all upstream and downstream emissions in detail. However, quantifying relevant scope 3 emissions can be very challenging in practice due to data availability, complexity of calculation and possibly lack of inhouse knowledge with companies.

In order to address corporate needs, the objective of this Master Thesis is to develop a Scope 3 estimation methodology according GHG protocol and to quantify the GHG hotspots along the value chains of industry sectors (following NACE and GICS codes) .

Required activities of this desk top research are, e.g.

  • Review and analysis of GHG protocol, GHG ISO standards, CSRD, NACE and GICS, …
  • Development of a quantitative estimation methodology for industry sectors
  • Research of LCA studies that are representative for industry sectors
  • Development of an Excel-based tool for qualifying and/or quantifying GHG hotspots along the value chains of industry sectors
  • The student should have an interest in Scope 1, 2 & 3 GHG emissions, LCA/PCF/EPDs, environmental regulation, statistics as well as in methods development.

Understanding the State of Supply Chain Sustainability

  • Sustainability

The emphasis on sustainability within supply chains across industries has increased in recent years. Today, companies across the globe report on sustainability efforts and progress each year and set goals to reach ambitious environmental and social sustainability targets. This increased focus has prompted questions regarding how sustainability practices are interpreted and understood. How do different demographic groups (i.e., gender, language, location, age, and industry) interpret the current state of supply chain sustainability? Have the long-term implications of COVID-19 affected companies’ commitments to supply chain sustainability? Our analysis used response data from the 3rd Annual State of Supply Chain Management Survey and context gathered through supply chain executive interviews to answer the two main research questions. After slicing the survey response data into demographic categories – gender, age range, region, survey language translation, and industry – we performed non- parametric Mann-Whitney-U and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA tests to see if the different groups interpret sustainability commitments significantly differently. When testing within single demographics, results showed significant differences in responses by demographics. This seemed to explain some of the difference in how people interpreted supply chain sustainability; however, when isolating groups further, this became less apparent. Upon isolating the gender, age range, and location demographics by major industries, fewer responses showed significant differences. From this, we can conclude that comparisons of sustainability guidelines and practices should be industry-specific, rather than specific to other demographics such as gender, age, or location. Our capstone results could provide the basis for future research to understand the variations in how different groups of people interpret supply chain sustainability within the same company, industry, or outside of an organizational setting entirely.

Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Nsisha, a rural village located close to the shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania, this article analyzes how climate change and variability intersect with other stressors that affect rural livelihoods, particularly HIV/AIDS. The analysis integrates theories of vulnerability from both climate and HIV/AIDS literatures to show how these intersecting stressors compound livelihood vulnerability in complex ways. Climate change and variability are linked to declining agricultural yields and an increase in food and nutrition insecurity and poor health in this region. This situation heightens poverty and susceptibility to HIV/AIDS, compromising people’s abilities to cope and adapt. Because of social dynamics, single mothers and their children are particularly affected by these compound vulnerabilities. Climate change and variability are significant contributing vulnerability factors that sustain and exacerbate asymmetrical poverty, food and nutrition insecurity, and HIV/AIDS. By describing the links between vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and climate variability, findings highlight the importance of holistic and localized approaches to adaptation, instead of trying to isolate single issues. Prioritization of multidisciplinary research focusing on the socially differentiated and gendered distribution of vulnerability specifically in regard to poverty, food and nutrition insecurity, and HIV/AIDS is recommended as a means to enrich the understanding of climate change vulnerability. Adaptation strategies should address how climatic shifts interact with generalized poverty, food and nutrition insecurity, health, and gendered vulnerability in areas most affected.

Everyday social dynamics and cultural drivers of women’s experiences with HIV/AIDS: voices from Buhaya, Tanzania is based on ethnographic research conducted in 2005-06 in the village of Nsisha, which is located close to the shores of Lake Victoria and is approximately twelve kilometers from the town of Bukoba. Nsisha is a rural village comprised of 184 households and approximately one thousand inhabitants. Like most households in northwestern Tanzania, which is referred to as ‘Buhaya’ and refers to the homeland of the Bahaya people who form the largest ethnic group in this area, each and every household in Nsisha has been indirectly or directly affected by HIV/AIDS, meaning that either household members have been infected by HIV/AIDS, or households have absorbed children from their extended family and clan who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. In Buhaya, ‘vulnerability’ is shaped by a multitude of bio-physical and socio-ecological challenges which synergistically intertwine, yielding varying levels of individual struggle and abilities to cope and maintain livelihood resilience. The physical terrain of this region is marked by high rainfall, undulating ridges and overused soils which are increasingly acidic and infertile. Given that most people in the area are semi-subsistent farmers, their ability to derive food, nutrition and health security from the land is critical to their survival. The more recent events of climate variability phenomena - which are projected to endure - compound the challenges posed by the physical landscape and result in unpredictable seasonality, erratic and heavier rains and longer drought periods - which can result in increased rates of malaria, cholera, food, nutrition and health insecurity and HIV/AIDS. Buhaya is a region with a heavy disease burden which affect plants, animals, and humans and which independent of other forces, pose great threats to livelihood security, and like climate variability, lead to declines in food, nutrition, arable land and widespread and chronic poverty. High population densities combined with land shortages and soil infertility escalate and perpetuate poverty and its emanations. When these aforementioned bio-physical challenges intermix, emanations of livelihood vulnerability escalate exponentially, especially for poor people who lack needed buffers - and specifically for women and dependent children in this patriarchal society where land is primarily still bequeathed patrilineally. Given women’s subordinate position in Buhaya in general, they lack as much access to basic human needs – land, food, nutrition, health and economic security – as compared to men. The HIV/AIDS epidemic emerged in Buhaya at a time of agricultural decline and socio-cultural change. At this time, bananas – the cultural staple food crop – were being ravaged by a variety of pathogens, leading to a significant reduction in yield and a change in the daily diet. In addition, cattle husbandry was on the decline due to disease and the inability to maintain their health. Given this situation, farmers lacked the green manure essential for maintaining soil fertility, and for the ample growth of bananas, as well as other important food crops. These compounding factors lead to permutations of household poverty and food and nutrition insecurity, including the scarcity of protein and capital traditionally derived from livestock and milk. Similarly, socio-cultural chaos and change at the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic was punctuated by an influx of refugees from the border countries and consequently, high competition over livelihood resources, poverty imposed by the aftermath of the Kagera War and historical neglect from mainland Tanzania. While not an exhaustive list of the bio-physical and socio-ecological challenges which synergistically react in Buhaya, these common challenges affect most farmers in Buhaya. In this context, those most vulnerable and susceptible to acquiring HIV/AIDS are the poor who lack buffers to livelihood challenges, and alternatives to their impoverished situation. The status of one’s age, dependency, health, marital and socio-economic status intermix, affecting their ability to buffer against widespread challenges. Due to socio-cultural and physiological reasons, women - and consequently their dependent children - are by far the most vulnerable to the cycle of poverty, HIV/AIDS and their manifestations, and the situation can repeat generationally. In whole, the tiers of research and the in-depth questions asked and detailed answers recorded yield four different cross-sectional analyses of the ‘ecology’ of poverty and HIV/AIDS in Buhaya: (1) one which cuts across social stratification within the community, arguing who has more social capital and how this affects their vulnerability; (2) a second which focuses primarily on food and agricultural issues, and more specifically – bananas; (3) a third cross sectional category which centers on climate factors; (4) and a fourth and final category for this thesis which cuts across age categories and focuses on the social variation of widowhood. This dissertation is comprised of six subsequent sections; an Introduction chapter which lays out the thinking behind the design of the research topic, field research methods used, and general thematic analyses which emerge; which is followed by four thematic chapters, and ends with the General Concluding Discussion. The four chapters appear as follows: (1) Gendered vulnerability in an ecology of poverty and AIDS in northwestern Tanzania; (2) Ethno-cognitive connections between HIV/AIDS and banana plants in the Bahaya agricultural society of northwestern Tanzania; (3) Compound vulnerabilities: the intersection of climate variability and HIV/AIDS in northwestern Tanzania; (4) Widowhood in Buhaya, Tanzania: livelihood challenges, strategies for coping and resilience. The General Concluding Discussion closes, highlighting how each chapter is a specific emanation of the thesis topic, and how collectively, they combine to comprehensively illustrate the everyday challenges women in Buhaya, Tanzania experience in regard to surviving and coping in the face of patriarchy, poverty and HIV/AIDS. As will be illustrated, this thesis argues that within a context of poverty and HIV/AIDS, multiple factors synergize, causing widespread poverty, and the threats and lived realities of land, food, nutrition and health insecurity, and to persistent and bequeathed cycles of entrapment. While poverty and its emanations are ubiquitous in Buhaya, a detailed focus on case studies reveals that while people are poor and suffering, they are still employing the strategies that they can and the resources that they can garner to buffer against livelihood challenges, and attempt to get ahead. I have chosen to focus on case studies because the detailed realities of people’s lives provide the best understanding to revealing where people are falling short, and how their lives can be buffered and improved. As the chapters and case studies collectively show, in an ‘ecology of poverty and HIV/AIDS’, those that suffer the most are those least equipped to deal with the poverty and marginalization bestowed on them by patriarchal and patrilineal customs and social stratification; the threats of agricultural decline and food insecurity; the negative effects wrought by climate variability; and ultimately, age and the social variation of widowhood. These four themes of socio-ecological vulnerability, as argued in this thesis, combine to perpetuate vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, poverty and its bequeathed manifestations and cycles.

The Fifth Assessment Report of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released in 2014. It examines the impacts of climate change, inherent vulnerabilities and adaptation responses across the globe. The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are identified as being particularly vulnerable to climate change due to economic and capacity barriers. This paper examines the LDCs within the IPCC report to highlight how climatic impacts, vulnerabilities and adaptation are portrayed for these countries. It illuminates a need for a greater focus on the LDCs by the IPCC and for further research concentrated on the LDCs in general, in order to enhance the state of knowledge on LDCs and appropriately guide related policy.

Abstract Compared to other regions in the world, agricultural performance in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has for many decades been deteriorating. Theoretically, it has been argued that rapid population growth could be responsible for not only deteriorating agricultural performance but also to environmental degradation. On the other hand, the Asian Green Revolution of 1960s has been reported as a success story in terms of transforming agriculture and improving food security in the context of increasing population in countries such as China and India. This article reviews the Malthusian theoretical ideas and their relevance to agricultural transformation in the African context and sub-Saharan Africa in particular. It further discusses empirical evidence emanating from sub-Saharan Africa in relation to agricultural productivity, population growth and the integrity of the environment. Based on ensuing discussions, the agricultural sector in SSA needs to be transformed, and theoretical arguments that negate the Malthusian stance are really relevant in this sub-continent. It is further stressed that replicating the Asian Green Revolution will not work perfectly in SSA because of variations in context based on policy, institutional, and structural arrangements. Therefore, transforming agriculture in this sub-continent is not an easy and straight forward task; rather, its success will depend on the interplay between policy interventions, integrating the agricultural sector with other sectors of the economy, active participation of different stakeholders, as well as government mediations.
