The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of fashion business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a fashion business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of fashion businesses.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the fashion business industry. Discuss the type of fashion business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of fashion business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types:

  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your fashion business. You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your fashion business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: college students, sports enthusiasts, soccer moms, techies, teens, baby boomers, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of fashion business you operate. Clearly baby boomers want different fashion items than teens.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other fashion businesses. Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes non-fashion oriented apparel and used apparel among others.

With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other fashion businesses with which you compete.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What products do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior products?
  • Will you provide products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to acquire your products?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a fashion business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : in the product section, you should reiterate the type of fashion business that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to clothing, will you offer items such as accessories, shoes, bags, etc.?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the items you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your fashion business and your distribution method. Document whether you will sell your fashion items yourself through a storefront and/or website. Likewise, document if you will sell your products via distributors and who you expect they will be. 

Promotions : the final part of your fashion business marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Making your fashion business’s storefront (if applicable) extra appealing to attract passing customers
  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local bloggers and websites 
  • Social media advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your fashion business such as serving customers, procuring inventory, keeping the store clean, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 10,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your fashion business’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company. 

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in the fashion business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in fashion businesses and/or successfully running retail and small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Fashion Financial Projections

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 100 customers per day or 200? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your fashion business, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100.000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a distributor approached you with a $100,000 order, that would cost you $50,000 to fulfill. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for supplies, equipment rentals, employee salaries, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180 day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a fashion business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like furniture, sewing machines, etc.
  • Cost of maintaining an adequate supplies and inventory
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Over the last two to three decades, the fashion industry has exploded. What used to be an industry of about 30 million people now involves more than 80 million people.

"Fashion is now more accessible for everyone, but it's also more difficult to set yourself apart from the competition," said Priyanka Prakash, a small business expert with Fundera, a provider of financial services for small businesses.

In a very crowded space like fashion, focus on a very specific audience, "not everyone or male/female," said Kyle Golding, CEO of The Golding Group, a consulting firm that advises businesses and nonprofit groups.

Understanding your best audience, knowing what they really want and how they want it can lead to more sustainable sales and the opportunity to create brand ambassadors, he adds.

"The business plan should include more than just how to make a single sale, but how to create a community around the brand. A generic approach will not accomplish any of that, ultimately wasting time and money in a highly competitive industry," Golding said.

Highlight Key Pieces

Got a few designs that really speak to the heart of your collection? Include a section in your business plan where you can provide images of your clothing, whether they're studio photos or digital images. Highlight these images with information about the style, textiles and how these clothes fit in with your overall brand story.

Name Your Brand Partners

Whether you're working with a business owner who's providing you with materials or teaming up with a shipping service, call out your brand's partners in your business plan. Give brief details about your partners, how they'll contribute to your business and financial information about each one. It's also worth noting what steps they have for quality control, as this information will be particularly interesting to investors, Bliss said.

Share Your Marketing Strategy

Here's the part of the business plan where you'll need to show off your marketing strategy. Whether you're planning on running an online-only shop, working out of a brick-and-mortar location, or a mix of both, dazzle your reader with your plans for getting your name out there. Make sure you mention all the acquisition channels you'll use to bring customers through your doors, like email, social media, digital ads, websites, search engine optimization and blog posts.

Do a Financial Projection

You'll need to show potential investors and lenders your plan for getting your clothing brand into the black. Your financial forecast should include a sales forecast, an expenses budget, income projections and a timeline of when you'll break even with your business (when your expenses will be equivalent to the sales you're taking in).

Include these key milestones in your forecast – your first six months in business, first year, second year, five years, 10 years and beyond.

"Breaking down the forecast by milestones can make all that financial information a lot more digestible, plus it illustrates your thinking around short-term vs. long-term growth for your business," Bliss said.

When drafting financials, be precise.

"Hire an accountant or financial advisor who can draft real-life financials for the company," said Brett Helling, owner of Ridester.

Go Heavy on Visuals

As an owner of a clothing brand, you've likely got an eye for detail and design. Show your talents by including plenty of visuals in your business plan. From sales forecast graphs to mockups of how your future clothing store will look, these visuals can make your business plan pop, Bliss said.

Emphasize Readability, not Length

A lot of advice centers on the ideal length of a business plan, but that can cause you to focus on the wrong thing. Instead of trying to hit an arbitrary page number, work on making your business plan as readable and interesting as possible.

"Here's why: Business plans have to walk that fine line between being chock-full of important information, while being interesting enough that the reader won't be put to sleep," Bliss said. "So now that you've sketched out a rough draft for your business plan, go back and see if there are sections where you can really tease out your brand's story. If you're having a tough time doing it yourself, find a friend with a knack for writing who can help."

Put the Story in a Nutshell

The Executive Summary is the last part you'll write, but it frames your entire business plan. Think of it as the "book jacket" for your business, introducing key elements and sharing your passion for what you do.

"Even if you think you have a good understanding of your business at the outset, it's still a good practice to write this last; it will likely feel more organized and pull in more information once you have the rest of your business plan nailed down," said Kevin Sproles, CEO of Volusion, an ecommerce platform for small- and medium-sized businesses. "There might also be a particularly salient point or poignant benefit that emerges in the process of writing the plan, and you'll get to include it here."

Success Tip: Setting Goals

Good management is the key to success and good management starts with setting goals. Set goals for yourself for the accomplishment of the many tasks necessary in starting and managing your business successfully. Be specific. Write down the goals in measurable terms of performance. Break major goals down into sub-goals, showing what you expect to achieve in the next two to three months, the next six months, the next year, and the next five years. Beside each goal and sub-goal place a specific date showing when it is to be achieved.

Plan the action you must take to attain the goals. While the effort required to reach each sub-goal should be great enough to challenge you, it should not be so great or unreasonable as to discourage you. Do not plan to reach too many goals all at one time.

Establish priorities. Plan in advance how to measure results so you can know exactly how well you are doing. This is what is meant by "measurable" goals. If you can’t keep score as you go along you are likely to lose motivation. Re-work your plan of action to allow for obstacles which may stand in your way. Try to foresee obstacles and plan ways to avert or minimize them.

How to Generate Business Sales Leads Through Referrals

To get more and better business leads network with those clients you already have a relationship with. (Note: some professions are prohibited from making gifts for referrals.)

1. Create a referral form.

A fill-in-the-blank referral form that is distributed quarterly to the names on your database is guaranteed to land leads. To help customers zero in on appropriate prospects, ask questions that relate to your nitch:"Whom do you know who's retiring in five years? Who just bought a new home? Who's launched a business?" Send a thank you note to everyone who sends you a referral. If you win a large account, send them a basket of flowers, bottle of wine or a magazine subscription.

2. Host a salon.

A salon is a business mixer for the sole purpose of garnering new business. Invite your best clients and ask each of them to bring a friend along. Because it is not easy for customers to think up prospects names when they don't know your market, send a list of the type of client you are trying to target along with the invitation.

3. Ask during delivery.

No matter what you sell, your clients are most likely to be enthusiastic at the point of delivery. (Weylman) This is an excellent time to leverage yourself. In fact, ask for referrals at any point in the sale.

4. Offer incentives.

Rewards for referrals that turn into business can range from free estimates, samples, consultations, coaching sessions to a discount on future purchases, etc. Just be careful to not give more than the referral is worth.

5. Sponsor a contest.

Enter everyone who sends a referral that coughs up a lead in a drawing. Make the prize substantial. "Make giving referrals fun," says Robert Middleton. Examples might range from a meal at an elegant inn to a mini-vacation or such.

6. Give leads in return.

This is one of the best ways to get referrals. But be absolutely sure that the referrals you give are competent and reliable. Remember your reputation is on the line. You don't want good intentions to jeopardize your relationship with your existing clients.

7. Pump prospects who've passed up your services.

Most potential client/customers feel bad when they have to turn your business down, so why not make them feel better by requesting leads. They do not see this as a burden. Just be sure to acknowledge them when the referrals come in and especially when they become a customer.

8. Swap leads with rivals.

If geography or time restricts your ability to service all your potential clients, simply pass along jobs you can't handle to other businesses and ask them to do the same. Giving these referrals scores you points with potential clients who may come back to you some day.

9. Cultivate reciprocal referrals from non-competitors.

Find out who is compiling a database of related business and ask to be included. The opportunities occur in businesses which are somewhat collateral to your own.

10. Tap suppliers.

Constantly remind vendors of your need for referrals. Send out a letter or brochure which says, "When my business grows, your business grows." Likely, reason you don't get more referrals is because you don't ask. So, ASK!

The fashion industry is caught in a paradox. On one hand, it embraces cutting-edge technology, from digital fabric printing to virtual try-on experiences. Generative AI is the latest entrant, with companies like Mango using it to design campaigns and potentially even clothing itself. Yet, a stark reality persists: a significant portion of the world's garments are still meticulously hand-stitched, often under deplorable working conditions that wouldn't even be tolerated in a robot-operated factory.

This irony underscores a deeper issue: the fashion industry is a colossal waste generator. Recent estimates suggest the industry produces approximately 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions. It's estimated that a staggering 85% of textiles end up in landfills, with much of it never even worn. We've all seen the textile mountains in the Atacama desert in Chile. Clearly, the current system is unsustainable.

Further complicating the picture is the fashion industry's entanglement with body image issues. For decades, it has perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards, primarily for women but increasingly for men as well. Photoshopped images in magazines and heavily curated social media feeds present a distorted view of reality, creating a breeding ground for body dysmorphia, particularly among teenagers and young adults. This raises a crucial question: can AI, a technology capable of generating flawless, potentially even unattainable visuals, exacerbate this problem?

The question is, can AI be part of the solution or is a more fundamental transformation needed in our never-ending consumer system? The answer likely lies somewhere in between. Leading fashion houses are already embracing AI for various applications to reduce their impact. Luxury brands like Burberry are utilizing AI to predict trends and optimize inventory and minimize waste. Fast-fashion giants like H&M are exploring AI-powered personalization tools to recommend styles to customers before purchasing. These examples are just a start of a showcase of potential AI applications to streamline processes, reduce waste, and cater to individual preferences.

The true impact of AI in fashion may extend far beyond aesthetics and marketing. The industry urgently needs solutions to tackle its colossal waste problem, overflowing inventory, and unethical labor practices. This could eliminate the need for excess inventory and dramatically reduce waste within the long and often fragile supply chain.

Here's a glimpse into the future: Imagine choosing clothes in a virtual reality setting. Using LiDAR technology from your phone, you can get a precise, tailored fit before ordering your garment. Production could then take place in a local, collaborative workshop using a combination of human expertise and robotic efficiency. This workshop could even utilize recycled garments and textiles as the raw materials. While this scenario may seem futuristic, elements of it are already happening, with advancements gradually trickling down to the retail market.

The three pillars will help you be more prepared in the future-facing fashion industry and explore its intersections with technology, innovative business models, ethics and sustainability and other global contemporary issues.

The main module of the programme spans semesters one and two. In the first semester, you will explore the fundamental elements of the fashion business by covering the processes of fashion systems, sustainable and ethical approaches, fashion consumers and design thinking in management. The second semester will augment your fashion management underpinning by exploring retail and fashion marketing, data analysis, supply chain and creative research approaches. As you advance, the final semester will allow you to conduct a global fashion management major project, enabling you to showcase the sum total of all you have learnt over your studies.

Contemporary fashion management, values and consumption experience (30 credits) This module enables students to gain a holistic understanding of the dynamics of the fashion industry while developing retail management and marketing competencies. A broad framework of contemporary issues shaping the fashion sector will be delivered via research-led learning content, innovative teaching methods and real live simulation. Through exploration of key concepts such as internationalisation, retail management and marketing, students will delve into the strategies and approaches employed by fashion companies to create customer-centric experiences, that drive success in the global fashion industry. The module fosters proactive individual and collaborative learning and importantly enhances insights into the global nature of the fashion industry which will prepare students to become strategic and creative managers. 

Fashion Sustainability and Society (15 credits) This module will study the current management theories and practices within the global fashion and textile industry and examine the implications of sustainability efforts (such as net zero and the circular economy) on the industry, environment and society.  

Cross-Cultural Consumer Psychology (15 credits) This module aims at familiarising students with (1) the basic psychological concepts underlying consumer behaviour, (2) the concept of globalisation and how it is perceived by consumers around the world, (3) the importance of culture in understanding differences in consumer behavior across countries, and (4) consumer dispositions toward globalisation, in-group/out-group biases, stereotypes toward foreign countries (and their socio-psychological origins). Understanding these concepts is fundamental for the development of global consumer insights and the successful design and implementation of international marketing strategies.

Data Analysis in Management (15 credits) This module provides students with the opportunity to gain knowledge in methods and techniques of using data analysis. From this module students will learn which data can be used to answer management questions; how to analyse quantitative marketing data; how to make decisions based on this data. This module provides students with fundamental knowledge of quantitative skills and techniques in the marketing management context.

Managing Global Logistics and Supply Chains (15 credits) The aim of this module is to equip students with skills and knowledge to manage planning, transport, sourcing, distribution, logistics and supply chain management in a global context. This module aims to teach students about global supply chain management and the role of international logistics systems. 

Research in Design and Enterprise (30 credits) This module provides students with an understanding and insight into research processes that can be applied to both design and academic research. It introduces a broad range of advanced research methods, focused on techniques and issues appropriate to academia, design, enterprise, management and marketing. Students will develop essential skills and competencies to enable them to become critical, reflective and creative researchers, able to problem-solve and contextualise research for a range of real-world contexts and applications. 

Global Fashion Management Major Project (60 credits) The teaching curriculum for this course has the potential to give rise to novel research questions and a wide scope of subjects which will have interest to the wider academic and professional community. The module provides students with the opportunity to independently investigate and produce a major project on a subject area of relevance to their programme of study such as an issue of contemporary academic and/or business interest. Students will utilise their learning from various core and elective modules, in order to design and complete an independent research project on a specific area relating to global fashion management. Through the major project, students will explore and interpret research information through critical review and analysis of literature and primary and/or analysis of secondary research to create a coherent and cogent argument leading to management recommendations.

Learning and teaching

You will gain a breadth of fashion management knowledge along with an expert focus in a specialised field. There will be a significant emphasis on the practical application of specialised knowledge of the fashion industry, and how it operates and interacts with its consumers.

Creative problem solving and design thinking methods are central our teaching in the School of Design.  Your learning will be enhanced by a range of contemporary teaching methods which encourage active learning and are underpinned by inclusive and authentic learning activities, including team working, creative sprints and industry facing scenarios. 

We follow a campus based blended learning approach; you’ll have a range of resources in the virtual learning environment which are accessible at all times, including videos and pre-work to help you prepare. You’ll attend lectures which are carefully designed to invite engagement and participation, seminars enable you to delve deeper into key topics, workshops to learn and practise design making, crit sessions and tutorials to discuss work in progress.  

Your module tutors have dedicated office hours, which means there’s always the opportunity to ask questions.  

Collaboration with staff and your peers is the foundation of our teaching and learning, giving students input into their learning journey. Two of your core modules will be studied with students from other design disciplines, here you will benefit from our community of learners, to contribute their diverse perspectives, and to encounter those of others, with global industry practices in mind.  

These activities provide a rich resource to support further investigation in your private study time.  Private study is important at university and a potentially significant change from the way you have been taught previously. This is space where you can reflect and critique materials from taught session, including further reading, writing, designing and making. You will be guided through this process by your tutors to help you develop your knowledge and research skills. The ability to work independently is key skill to your development as creative professional and thinker. 

You’ll also have the ongoing support of your Academic Personal Tutor. 

On MA Global Fashion Management course you’ll be taught by expert academics, many of which have also industry practise. There is an active visiting lecturer programme, formed on industry and academic experts, including alumni. 

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

In the School of Design you will be assessed through a variety of methods, these include visual 2D and 3D responses, portfolios of text and image, blogs, short videos, presentations as well as more traditional essays, reports and occasionally exams. Some of your assessments will be based upon collaboration with your peers. This collaboration could be in the development of artefacts, proposals and/or various forms of visual and textual communication in response to problem-based issues. 

The nature of assessment will change as you progress through your programme: 

  • Semester 1:  Assessments will focus on your understanding and acquisition of new knowledge, academic, digital and professional skills.  
  • Semester 2:  Assessments will focus more on establishing how well you understand, analyse and apply this new knowledge and these new skills in relation to real-world, local and global settings.    
  • Semester 3: Study will become more self-directed major project often being negotiated and agreed with tutors.  

Throughout the year, it is to be expected that you will find that assessments are progressively more challenging. To support you as you navigate assessment, we provide formative as well as summative assessment. Formative assessment gives staff an opportunity to give you feedback on personal progress, in good time before a summative deadline. Given the range of assessment types in any one level of study, formative assessment and feedback enables you to reflect upon your personal progress and establish which forms of assessment allow you to play to your strengths.  

Authentic assessment means relevant assessment; relevant in terms of contemporary contexts and also relevant to your personal interests and your future aspirations. The authenticity of assessment is an important consideration in how we design assignments and project briefs. This means that we think carefully about the relevance of assessment outcomes; not only in academic terms but also in terms of your chosen career path, skill development needs and the future of work in your chosen discipline. Where appropriate, there will be an element of choice in your assessment. Some projects will allow you to choose the focus and format of your submission.  

Dialogic teaching methods emphasise in-class discussion and support staff / student debate. This approach to teaching and learning enables staff to hear all student voices. In turn, for some modules, this in-class dynamic may facilitate and inform the co-production of assessment tasks. Co-production of assessment tasks means that staff and students work together to devise fair and inclusive assessment; both formative and summative. This allows staff to consider the requirements of a module alongside opportunities to allow students to harness their strengths.   

While remaining considerate of module and programme learning outcomes, where relevant and beneficial, we strive to adopt a flexible approach to assessment design. This flexibility allows us to respond to student voice, maintain an agility that allows us to react to global, social and cultural change and respond swiftly to opportunities to devise projects with our industrial partners. We aim for all assessment to be relevant, meaningful and engaging

The school has an excellent code of practice on assessment which is being updated every year. The principles and processes governing assessment and marking were being implemented in accordance. A balance between theory and practice is central to the assessments. In addition to the focus on the learner as a subject, an orientation toward action as a learning medium, is also essential in order to achieve training that is closer to practice (where theories can be practical). The programme also embraces the international and socio-economic diversity of both student and academic community as part of the assessment design. Assessments are constantly being improved to ensure better inclusive and authentic assessments and student success.

You’ll need a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent qualification specialising in one the following subjects: fashion, management, business, textiles, social psychology, economics.

This course includes a significant amount of quantitative analytical content, and we will give preference to applicants from these subject areas who have studied modules in a quantitative subject, or have undertaken quantitative research, either as part of their degree course or in the course of their industrial career to date – and who have indicated this in the supporting statement section of their application.

Computers and digital equipment  

To ensure you can make the most of your studies at Leeds, you’ll need to make sure your laptop  meets the system requirements for your course .  

Some of our courses require the development of work using Adobe Creative and other relevant software. If required by your programme, the School will provide you with a free Adobe CC account when you arrive. We also use a blended learning model where you’ll need to access course materials and video conference using a computer or mobile device (eg laptop, tablet, smartphone). Costs for a laptop will vary depending on the exact specification. You should expect to pay between £800–£2,500.   

If you’re buying a new laptop for your studies, then we recommend that you wait until you’re registered as a student so that you take advantage of discounts given to university students. Delaying purchasing also allows you to find out from your programme leader what you need and what you do not need. Depending on your circumstances you can benefit from a  laptop loan  or further support from our  Financial Assistance Fund .  

You’ll also have access to further digital equipment in our studios and using our loan scheme. But, you may decide to purchase your own equipment which will result in additional optional costs. Examples are: Drawing tablet (£50–£500); Digital camera (£200–£1500); etc.

The Business of Fashion Joins Forces With Australian Fashion Week 2025

SYDNEY, Australia — IMG -owned Australian Fashion Week , presented by Pandora, will return in 2025 from May 12 to 16 at Sydney’s Carriageworks — an urban arts cultural precinct in the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops. The fashion week’s content programming will be supported by The Business of Fashion (BoF) through a series of events on the official schedule, including panel talks, intimate designer conversations and presentations. The talks will be open to industry attendees, the public and live streamed at australianfashionweek.com.

“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Australian Fashion Week 2025,” says Nick Blunden, president of The Business of Fashion. “We are looking forward to putting together a series of events that will engage the Australian fashion community and highlight the extraordinary talent featured at such an important part of the global fashion calendar.”

“The Australian fashion market is incredibly dynamic and exciting, showcasing an impressive mix of creative talent from both well-established fashion businesses and a new generation of independent brands. It is no surprise that Australian fashion is reclaiming its rightful place on the global stage,” he adds.

Australian Fashion Week is the largest international fashion event in the Asia Pacific region. Held annually in Sydney in May, the event features many celebrated names in Australian design, from established brands like Bec & Bridge and Bianca Spender, alongside the next generation of talent shaping the Australian fashion industry, like emerging brands Alix Higgins and Ngali.

The fashion industry in Australia has historically faced challenges with its geographical positioning: logistically, a flight from London to Istanbul takes less time than a flight from Perth to Sydney, as one example. With a population of only 26 million, Australia also has a relatively small local marketplace — although the Australian Bureau of Statistics projects the population to reach between 34.3 and 45.9 million people by 2071.

However, Australian designers today are putting the country’s creative talent back on the fashion map. Notable success stories include Zimmermann . Recently valued in deal at more than $1 billion, it has over 55 international stores, investment from Italian backers Style Capital and offices and showrooms in New York and Paris. Other independent labels are gaining global traction: Camilla boasts 264 wholesales accounts in 65 countries on top of its 25 Australian stores; Aje has 75 overseas wholesale accounts and is growing at pace in the US and Middle East; Rebecca Vallance is growing its physical retail footprint both in Australia and further afield. All these designers have shown on the Australian Fashion Week schedule.

Scanlan Theodore , Carla Zampatti, Camilla and Marc and heritage high street label Cue are other notable names with a strong presence in all major Australian cities, while Maticevski and Alex Perry have strong international presence through wholesale channels.

Dion Lee is another notable Australian talent and export — the creative director and Tafe NSW graduate established his namesake label in 2009 and debuted at Australian fashion week at the age of 23. He has since operated out of New York and shown on the New York fashion week schedule since 2013, although the business went into voluntary administration earlier this year.

The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) shares the most recent statistics from a 2021 survey on the region’s fashion and textile industry, citing its economic contribution as AUD 27.2 billion, of which AUD 7.2 billion was in export revenue — more than the export value of Australian beer and wine. The Australian fashion industry employs half a million workers.

The local fashion industry has historically struggled with the lack of local manufacturing opportunities available, with the need to produce offshore presenting both creative, economic and environmental challenges to young designers.

However, the textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) sector in the southeastern state of Victoria alone has grown 9 percent year-on-year to $318 million, according to a new report ‘Moving the Needle: The State of Play of Victoria’s Textile, Clothing & Footwear Manufacturing Sector’, due to be published later this year. It also states that the sector currently generates over $960 million for Australia’s economy.

The country is also experiencing increased attention from major international players vying for growing consumer markets in even one of Australia’s most remote locations: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co and Gucci are among the brands expanding in the Western city of Perth, while Dior, Fendi and Cartier are reportedly opening stores there — all looking to benefit from its newfound status as a travel hub and relative economic stability with its booming mining and petroleum industries.

Perth also had the highest population growth rate at 3.6 percent from 2022-23. However, the state capitals all grew by 517,200 people, or 3 percent, in the same period, with overseas migration the largest driver of growth, accounting for 454,900. Consequently, local opportunities in the fashion space are growing — and Australian Fashion Week, in partnership with strategic sponsor Destination NSW (New South Wales) and with the support of the New South Wales Government, is looking to nurture the creative talent in this space accordingly.

Event organisers are also waiving designer participation fees for the 2025 event, to support brands showcase their latest collections. Australian Fashion Week also supports emerging designers through its programme DHL Next Gen, which has helped discover and launch the careers of leading names, including Akira, Anna Quan, Bec & Bridge, Camilla & Marc, Sass & Bide, among others. The prize is valued at over $100,000 and includes runway show production, runway photography and livestream.

Over the last four years, Australian Fashion Week has also included the Australian department store David Jones’ Indigenous Fashion Projects (IFP) runway event, in a celebration of culture, community and country, featuring some of Australia’s First Nations designers and brands: Ngali, Liandra, Miimi & Jiinda, Maara Collective, Joseph & James and Gali Swimwear.

2024 High School Activities and Sessions

A day full of engaging presentations, workshops and sessions across the disciplines of Fashion, Art, Theatre, Dance, Music and Game Design.

These activities offer a hands-on* experience for all high school attendees and are geared specifically to students looking at careers in the arts!

Art Without Limits Speakers:

  • Our speakers will be sharing their insights on how to grow as an arts entrepreneur and develop an entrepreneurial mindset in the arts.

Discover Theatre and Dance:

  • Watch a live dance rehearsal and get an inside look at the art of movement.
  • Discover the behind-the-scenes magic as theatre design tech students showcase their creative process.

Interactive Music Sessions:

  • Join a Q&A with guest musician Conrad Tao.
  • Dive into world music through interactive sessions involving singing and dancing centered around Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
  • Explore jazz improvisation.

Fashion Workshops:

  • Explore the Kent State University Museum on a tour with insights into career opportunities.
  • Attend a screening of the 2024 Fashion Show with a student panel discussion on the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the show.

Art as Activism:

  • Performance Poetry: Engage in sessions that explore the power of art and performance poetry as tools for social change.

Business Entrepreneurship Showcase:

  • See creativity and strategy in action as high school students compete in a pitch competition.
  • Hear success stories from our alumni as they share their journeys to professional success.

Guided Art Sessions

  • Discover the state-of-the-art Center for Visual Arts with guided tours of our studios.
