History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly. Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947. After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of the British rule and birth of India as a Republic State.

Then there are the tabulaes presented by the different government departments high lighting their achievements and the different states present special features of their local culture and ways of life. In this way, India as a unity even in diversity is amply demonstrated and presented. The children selected from different educational institutions put up cultural shows on the Rajpath and thus goes on the marvelous and worth-seeing spectacle for nearly three hours.

The most elegant part of the show is the tabulaes presented by the three wings — of the army, who put up the latest achievements and acquisitions of the army in the most modern and up to date weaponry which gives to the world at large a show of our strength as a nation prepared for any contingency and emergency if ever our national integrity is challenged. This is the only day on which it is done and the public of the country, the viewers on the T.V. screen are given a feel how strong our national defense is.

While on one hand we are shown our strength on the other hand on this day, during the show the highest military awards for outstanding gallantry are also presented. It is a touching sight when the widow of a soldier who gave up his life fighting for the country, comes up to receive the gallantry award on behalf of her late husband. Even children who get selected over the length and breadth of the country for exemplary courage are also rewarded and honored.

It adds glory and glamour to this grand spectacle when the airforce of the country presents marvelous and miraculous feats of aircraft maneuverings and formations. Even they shower rose petals over the Chief Guests and the spectators which receive a spontaneous cheering.

For 1.32 billion people on the planet, today’s a big day.

On this day in 1950, independent India’s Constitution came into effect. While it was an incredibly important day to all the freedom fighters who gave their lives to India’s independence 68 years ago, Jan. 26 isn’t just confined to the history books.

Today, as 17% of the planet celebrates this Republic Day, we are struck by symbols.

This day is symbolic of the time that independent India became a democracy.

It is a victory of the people, of democratic governance, and of freedom.

It is thanks to this day, all those years ago, that we at Global Citizen India are able to unite people’s voices from across the country to create a movement for change — because every voice counts.

It’s a day of patriotism for 1.32 billion people. That’s more than one in six people on the planet celebrating their nation — the same nation.

With those 1.32 billion lives come billions of stories of citizenship, nation, and fellowship. The annual Republic Day parade is a parade for all, where students watch their peers walk alongside the military displays, marching bands, and the country’s biggest leaders. This year, we will see 113 women from the Border Security Force perform a motorbiking stunt show down Delhi’s Rajpath. Eighteen children from around the country will also be celebrated for their incredible acts of bravery that have saved lives and demonstrated great civic duty in the tttpast year.

This is a celebration of history, and a generation of leaders who nurtured India to become the strong, independent democracy it is today.

You may have heard of B. R. Ambedkar. You might know him as Baba Saheb, or maybe under his original name, Ambavadekar… but his most famous moniker is the Father of the Constitution. As chairman of the team drawing up the document, he stood for people’s rights regardless of caste, gender or region, and was instrumental in launching India into its post-Independence state. And today is the day to celebrate figures of the past who have shaped our world.

This very Constitution, which continues to see amendments , evolution and debate, started off as a real mix of governing documents from around the world. You will find pieces of the Japanese, Irish, and French, inspiration from the German, grounding in the US Bill of Rights, and more.

This year, we’re reminded that India itself is a global citizen (in case you’d forgotten our epic times at Global Citizen India ).

In honour of 50 years since the creation of ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations that convenes 10 states from the region), India is hosting all 10 ASEAN Heads of State at the Republic Day parade. Between this and Prime Minister Modi’s speech in Davos at the World Economic Forum this week, we cannot overstate the importance of India’s leadership on the global stage.

The India Constituent Assembly adopted the constitution on 26th January, 1950. Since then, the republic day is celebrated all over the country with great pomp and show. The main attraction is the Republic Day parade at Delhi , where the President of India takes the salute.

The Republic Day parade I witnessed on the Rajpath was a memorable one. First of all there was the booming of guns. The National Flag was unfurled by the President, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Simultaneously MI 17 helicopter showered flower petals on the people. The king of Nepal, who was accompanied by his wife was the Chief Guest.

The Prime Minister paid homage to the martyr soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti.

The parade began with the Major General of Delhi Area in the lead. Winners of the highest gallantry award including the Ashok Chakra, Param Vir Chakra, and victoria cross followed the parade commander in jeeps.

The most awe-inspiring was Agni, the intermediate Range Ballistic missile with the range of 2450 km, carrying 1000 kg load of explosive including a nuclear warhead Then there were 28 tableaux (jhansi) from states and public undertaking. They represented India’s variety, cultural diversity, and secularism. Then there were a national bravery award winner children and their march. Then there was “Flypast” termed the “Big Boy” comprising several planes.

Finally, there was the breathtaking “Vertical Charlie” by a Su-30 aircraft, I can never forget what I saw long long back.

Everything I saw in the Republic Day Parade was so fascinating that I have decided that I will attend the Republic Day celebration every year! And I am certain that I will next time too I will get to watch many clips of scientific advancement in the pioneering fields.

Honoring what our ancestors did to fight for the freedom and constitution of the nation, I pray for a nation that they dreamed of – A nation without religion, racial and regional tensions, where man’s miseries vanish and mankind can live with greater dignity, peace, and comfort in an atmosphere of national respect and greater equality. That may be just a form of hope, but I will work towards it.

In the India of my dreams, where all citizens are happy to get up for the national anthem and are delighted to be part of nation-building.

Years ago on this date, in the year 1950, the Constitution of our country, which today governs our nation, came into being.

In wake of the British declaring their exit from Indian soil, a Constitution drafting committee was appointed to draft the Constitution for India. The drafting committee presented the draft to the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 25 th November 1949, which was adopted by the constituent assembly the next day on 26 th November 1949.

On 26th January every year, India celebrates republic day. It was the day when the Indian constitution came into effect in 1950. This is a day which is observed with fervour & pride across all over India. To commemorate the day when finally India adopted its constitution & become independent republic country Republic day is observed. Almost three years after independence, India became a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic republic.

India obtained its independence from Britishers on 15th August 1947, though the country didn’t have any permanent constitution, the drafting committee was appointed to form a set of laws. Until then, Government of Indian act was modified in order to govern, which was more inclined towards the colonial set up laws. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was appointed as the chairman of the drafting committee on 28th August 1947.

The committee prepared a draft constitution & submitted it to the constitution assembly on 4th November 1947. The assembly met in open sessions in which public was also included for 166 days spread over a period of two years eleven months & eighteen days. After lengthy discussions & modifications, the 308 members of the assembly signed two copies of the handwritten finalised constitution on 24th January 1950. Out of the two copies, one was in Hindi & the other one was in English.

Finally, on 26th January 1950, the final drafted constitution came into effect in the whole nation. 26th January was chosen for the implementation because it was on this date in 1929 when the declaration of Indian independence, i.e. Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj. The constituent assembly became the Parliament of India under the new constitution. On that day the first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad officially started his term. It was a memorable day for the whole country.

The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, issued the Declaration of Independence, which was also known as Purna Swaraj. The complete Independence Day was recognized and commemorated on 26th January 1930 for the first time. It continued to be observed until 1947 when India finally became an independent country.

The Constitution of India

Even after India won its independence, the struggle continued. The country did not have any self-made constitution to rely on. However, a committee was built on 29th August 1947, to draft a permanent constitution for independent India.

Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the Father of the Nation , was made chairman of the committee. On 4th November 1947 , the committee drafted the Constitution and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly, which was then under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

The members of the Assembly reviewed the draft of the constitution for over nearly two years and on 24th January 1950, 308 members of the Assembly signed two handwritten versions – in Hindi and English – of the Constitution.

Just like India’s Independence Day, Republic Day is one of India’s greatest successes and achievements. It is one of the reasons why the people of India can practice their democratic rights and responsibilities. Republic day is a national festival of India which is celebrated every year on 26th January. On this day in 1950, the Constitution of India enacted after the removal of the Government of India Act 1935.

History of Republic Day in India

The resolution was passed and announced In December 1929 in which the British government would not give the position of autonomous authority (Dominion) to India by January 26, 1930, and then India would declare itself completely independent.

The actual day of Independence accepted as the Independence Day of India on 15th August. After the liberation of India, the Constituent Assembly announced, and it started its work from 9 December 1947.

There were 22 committees in the constitution writing, in which the draft committee was the main committee, and the work of this committee was to write the overall constitution.

Two days later, on January 26, the Constitution was implemented throughout the country and to maintain the importance of January 26; the Constitution approved by the Constituent Assembly on the same day was recognized as the Republic Day of India.

The Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year to mark an important day in the history of all Indians. India became an independent country on August 15, 1947 and then on January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was established and the country was declared as Sovereign, Secular, Socialistic and Democratic Republic nation. This day reflects all the struggles of the people who fought for Indian independence.

Republic Day is celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm all over the country and this day is declared as a gazette public holiday by the government of India. It is a matter of pride and honor to celebrate this significant day. There are cultural programs in schools, speeches, and other competitions like quiz, essays related to Indian freedom movement are organized. All over the nation, people hoist flags and sing national anthem.

The President of India presides over the parade of Indian Armed Forces in the capital of the nation, New Delhi. The parade is organized on Rajpath from Vijay Chowk to India Gate. Teachers and students equally participate preparing for the Republic Day celebration in my school. The school building is decorated with pictures of freedom fighters, flower pots, and more. To witness the glorious Republic Day celebration in my school, we are asked to reach the school by 9:00 AM. The celebration begins by 9:15 AM with the unfurling of the national flag by the Headmaster. The N.C.C cadets proudly salute the ‘National Flag’. The flag hosting is coincided with the singing of the National Anthem by some pre-selected students.

Following the National Anthem, inspiring national songs are sung in chorus. Teachers, prominent local personalities and students take up dais for their respective speech in the praise of India’s struggle for the Independence. The speech is followed by an act on the freedom fight, cultural dance, and folklore.

A bunch of entertainment games and sports activity is held in the afternoon. The winners of the games are presented with awards and prizes. The participants of the parade and the celebration are offered sweets and certificate of participation by the school.

Republic day celebration in my school is a day of rejoicing and merry-making. At night the school building is illuminated and a tricolor flutters proudly on the building. The preparation for the Republic day celebration in my school commences many days before the eve as it is one of the most important historical events to remember. 26th of January 1950 was the day when India was announced a fully democratic republic following the reinforcement of the Constitution of India in the Indian Parliament. To honor the historic event a national holiday was declared for Indians to celebrate the date with enthusiasm. The constitutional commity presented the draft before the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. The entire process took 166 days, involving a tiresome process in which the committee organized sessions which were open to the public.

It was indeed a challenging act for the constitutional committee as the committee has to blend rightly and balance the interest of various religions, cultures, languages, social classes, castes, creed, even the minute details that can hamper the social fabric of the society.

Finally, on 24th January 1950, two handwritten copies of the document, one Hindi and the other in English were unanimously passed and signed by the three hundred and eight members of the committee. Incidentally, on January 26, 1950, the Indian constitution officially presented to the nation.

Also, the Indian parliament held its first session on the same day, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first president of the Republic of India. This event marked the birth of sovereign India symbolizing the end of British trails and India transformed to a Republic State.

Republic Day Celebrations

Every year January 26, Indians celebrate Republic Day with lot of enthusiasm. Why do we celebrate Republic Day?

The Republic Day is celebrated on 26 th January because it was exactly on 26 th January, 1950 that India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic and had a newly framed constitution for itself . It is this constitution that formed the base and a guiding document for independent India.

Importance of Republic Day

We all know that India got independence on 15 th August 1947; still leaders were not elected since we didn’t have a constitution on our own. Even after independence, India had no other option than to remain under the constitutional monarchy of King George VI. India was ruled by the British for many years and even the hard earned independence did not give the much needed democracy.

The Drafting Committee which was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was given the responsibility of framing the constitution. Dr.B.R.Ambedkar submitted the newly drafted constitution to the Indian Assembly on 4 th Nov 1947 but it took almost two and half years for the constitution to be fully amended. Finally it was on 26 th Jan 1950, the Constitution was fully enforced, and India was declared a Democratic Republic.

Many of us do not know the significance behind 26 th January and why this date was chosen as the Republic Day. It was on 26 th January, the demand for independence was made for the first time during the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress. Following the session, 26 th January 1930 was declared as ‘Purna Swaraj Day’ which meant Independence Day. Hence 26 th January was chosen as the date for Republic Day in order to honor the wish of freedom fighters. The constitution model was also named ‘Purna Swaraj’.

The Republic Day is declared a public holiday and people from all walks of life involve in various celebrations across the country. All the celebrations start with hoisting of National Flag and ends with reciting National Anthem. Schools and colleges have their own way of celebrating Republic Day by conducting cultural programmes, competitions for students and distribution of sweets. Many take part in volunteering activities such as blood donation camps etc., but the most important celebration which almost everyone in the country look forward to is the Republic Day Parade that is held in Delhi , the Capital city of India.

People from all parts of India reach Delhi to witness this grand Parade that extends from Rajpath to Red Fort. The parade is a visual treat to the spectators as well as a proud moment to the citizens of India. The Parade highlights the rich cultural heritage of India and its unity in diversity . The march past of the three main wings of defense – army, navy and air force makes everyone sit dumbstruck. The Honorable President of India, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute from the defense forces. Every year the Indian Government invites a guest, normally Prime Minister, President or Head of friendly nations for the Republic Day Celebration.

The celebrations begin early in the morning amidst thousands of civilians, politicians, and celebrities gathering at Rajpath. The power and valor of the defense forces are showcased in various forms. The defense forces display their latest weapons, machinery, tanks, missiles, and other equipments of war. This is to prove the capability of the Indian Defense Forces to the world nations. There will be a new addition every year and it proves that the country is progressing. The tunes played by military bands, trumpets, and drums makes us even more patriotic. The Republic Day celebration last for three days and it ends on 29 th January. The last ceremony is the Beating Retreat Ceremony which is performed by the Indian Defense Force in the evening after officially declaring the end of Republic Day Celebrations.

The History Behind Republic Day

After the Indian Independence movement, on 15 th August 1947, India achieved independence from the British Raj. However, a permanent constitution was yet to be framed for India which was under George VI as head of the state, while the governor-general was Earl Mountbatten with India being a constitutional monarchy at the time of independence. At this time, the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935 was largely considered for the laws under which India was governed at this time.

In order to draft a permanent constitution, a drafting committee was appointed on 28 August 1947. Dr B R Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of this drafting committee. On 4 November 1947, the drafting committee, after having prepared a draft constitution, submitted it to the Constituent Assembly for review. The meeting of the assembly was held in sessions which were open to the public and spread over a period of two years, 11 months and 18 days, it met for 166 days in all.

Finally, on 24 January 1950, the 308 strong members of the Assembly, after some modifications and amendments, put their signatures of two copies of the draft document, one each in Hindi and English. This approved draft document which came into force after two days on 26 January 1950 throughout the entire country is what we all have till today known as the Constitution of India. This day is also recognised as the start of the term of the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad. From that onwards, every year, we celebrate 26 January as our Republic Day.

Celebrations on Republic Day

Although Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, the major celebrations are visible at Rajpath in New Delhi, with the President, the Prime Minister and other ministers in attendance. The Delhi Republic Day march is the biggest and most imperative of the processions denoting the Republic Day festivities in India. Happy Republic Day Speech 2024

Good morning to everyone who is present over here on the prosperous occasion of 26 January Republic Day. A Happy Republic Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of January. This year India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day 2024 .

Why do we celebrate Republic Day? India Republic day is celebrated to remember the historic moment when our nation became an independent republic country. As we all know that India got its independence on 15th August 1947 and the country didn’t have its own constitution, instead India was governed by the laws implemented by the British. However after many deliberations and amendments, a committee headed by Dr. B.R Ambedkar submitted a draft of the Indian constitution, which was adopted on 26th November 1949 and officially came into effect on 26 January 1950.

On the same day, Dr Rajendra Prasad also began his term as the first President of India. And the Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under provisions of the new Constitution.

Ever since Independence, the main celebration of Happy Republic Day has been held at the national capital, New Delhi at the Rajpath in the presence of the President, Prime minister, and other high-ranking officials of India.

As a tribute to India, on Republic Day ceremonial parades take place at the Rajpath. The celebration begins from the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan followed by Raisina hill on the Rajpath past the Indian gate is the main attraction on Happy Republic Day. After the ceremonial parade, there is a presence of various dignitaries like the President, Prime minister, and other higher government officials at the Rajpath.

Every year as a part of celebrations, India has been hosting guests of honour, that could be the head of the state or government of other countries, for the 26 January Republic Day celebration at the capital. This has been the case since 1950, for example on 26 January 2021, the former president of the united states of America Barack Obama was the guest of honour on 26 January Republic Day. Sadly due to the COVID outbreak, there wasn’t any guest of honour for the 72nd Republic Day celebration. In 2024, India will be honored to host France's President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest for a Happy Republic Day celebrations, fostering diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The flag hoisting ceremony at the Rajpath in the national capital takes place mostly at 8:00 AM, which is followed by a Republic day speech by the President and a Republic Day parade.

26 January Republic Day March is considered to be an eye-catching element of the festival and it showcases Indian cultural and social heritage. It also showcases the Indian Defence Capability. But beyond it all, the constitution declares that India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. It assures its citizens’ justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. It also gives us our rights and duties as citizens. On this Happy Republic Day 2024, I hope that no matter who we are, rich or poor, a powerful politician or a regular citizen, we continue to respect these basic principles and values given to us by our amazing constitution. So that, as we move forward and continue to build this nation, we do not leave behind the foundation on which our country is built.

I want to end this speech by saying that India is a democratic country. The citizens living in a democratic country enjoy the privilege to elect their leader to lead the country.

Although we have seen a lot of economic improvements and success as a country, we still have many hurdles in our paths, such as poverty, unemployment, and pollution. It is our duty as citizens to face these challenges and come out stronger on the other side.

Now we know why do we celebrate Republic Day. So one thing we all can do today is to promise each other that we will become a better version of ourselves so that we could contribute to solving all these problems and making our nation a better place. Thank you, Happy Republic Day and Jai Hind.

Good morning to everyone who is present here on this auspicious occasion. All of us are here to celebrate the 75th Republic Day of our country today. I am obliged and honoured to give a speech on India Republic Day. Happy Republic Day, celebrated every year on 26th January has a special significance in the history of India. To make the event memorable the national event is celebrated every year with a lot of joy, happiness, and pride in our hearts. As we know on 26 January 1950, the Indian constitution came into effect and so from that day we the people of India constantly praise it as the 26 January Republic Day of our country. We all know that India got independence on 15 August 1947 but the nation didn’t have any constitution of its own. However, after many discussions and considerations, a committee headed by Dr. BR Ambedkar submitted a draft of the Indian constitution which was adopted on 26th November 1949 and officially came into effect on 26th January 1950, As the first Republic Day.

I want to end this speech by saying that India is a democratic country. The citizens living in a democratic country enjoy the privilege to elect their leader to lead the country. One attack, two interpretations: Biden and Trump both make the Jan. 6 riot a political rallying cry

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump will spend Saturday’s third anniversary of the Capitol riot by holding two campaign rallies in leadoff-voting Iowa in his bid to win back the White House.

To mark the moment, President Joe Biden plans to visit a site near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, on Friday where George Washington and the struggling Continental Army endured a tough winter during the American Revolution. Biden’s advisers say the stop in a critical swing state will highlight Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 siege and give the Democrat a chance for him to lay out the stakes of this year’s election . Weather concerns led Biden to move up his appearance from Saturday.

Vice President Kamala Harris plans to echo Biden’s message in her own speech Saturday at a church convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A person familiar with her remarks, who spoke on condition of anonymity to preview the speech, said Harris will focus on the battle over American freedoms and principles.

With Biden and Trump now headed toward a potential 2020 rematch , both are talking about the same event in very different ways and offering framing they believe gives them an advantage. The dueling narratives reflect how an attack that disrupted the certification of the election is increasingly viewed differently along partisan lines — and how Trump has bet that the riot won’t hurt his candidacy.

What’s happening: It’s been three years since the Jan. 6, 2021, riot when the nation watched the U.S. Capitol attack unfold on live TV.
Fast forward: Now, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are making the anniversary a political rallying cry during two separate political events Saturday ahead of this year’s election.
Criminal cases: Authorities are working to identify more than 80 people wanted for acts of violence at the Capitol and to find out who placed pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic national committees’ offices.

Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s victory, and they forced lawmakers and then-Vice President Mike Pence to flee for their lives . Many Trump loyalists walked to the Capitol after a rally outside the White House in which the Republican president exhorted the crowd to “fight like hell” or “you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Nine deaths were linked to the attack and more than 700 people have gone to court for their roles in it, and more than 450 people have been sentenced to prison.

Federal prosecutors in Washington have charged Trump in connection with the riot , citing his promotion of false and debunked theories of election fraud and efforts to overturn the results. Trump has pleaded not guilty and continued to lie about the 2020 election.

Trump has still built a commanding lead in the Republican primary, and his rivals largely refrain from criticizing him about Jan. 6. He has called it “a beautiful day” and described those imprisoned for the insurrection as “great, great patriots” and “hostages.” At some campaign rallies, he has played a recording of “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by jailed rioters — the anthem interspersed with his recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Republican strategist Alice Stewart said that “a lot of Republican voters don’t love Jan. 6, but they’re not obsessed about it either” and may support Trump because they oppose Biden’s economic policies.

“Republican voters can hold two consecutive thoughts and say, ‘Jan. 6, that wasn’t great, but that doesn’t affect my bottom line,’” she said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis , one of Trump’s rivals for the Republican nomination, called Jan. 6 a “protest” that “ended up devolving,” and has more recently said Trump “should have come out more forcefully” against the rioters. Another candidate, Trump’s former U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, frequently tells crowds that Jan. 6 “was not a beautiful day, it was a terrible day.”

But views overall of the attack have hardened along partisan lines.

In the days after the attack, 52% of U.S. adults said Trump bore a lot of responsibility for Jan. 6, according to the Pew Research Center . By early 2022, that had declined to 43%. The number of Americans who said Trump bore no responsibility also increased to 32% in 2022 compared to 24% in 2021.

A Washington Post-University of Maryland poll released this week found that about 7 in 10 Republicans say too much is being made of the attack. Just 18% of GOP supporters say that protesters who entered the Capitol were “mostly violent,” down from 26% in 2021, while 77% of Democrats and 54% of independents say the protesters were mostly violent — essentially unchanged from 2021.

A December poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, meanwhile, found that 87% of Democrats and 54% of independents believe a second Trump term would negatively affect U.S. democracy. Some 82% of Republicans believe democracy would be weakened by another Biden win, with 56% of independents agreeing.

Biden’s campaign also announced an advertising push starting Saturday with a spot centering on the Capitol attack .

In the ad, Biden says, “There’s something dangerous happening in America.”

“There’s an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs of our democracy,” Biden says as images from the insurrection appear. “All of us are being asked right now, what will we do to maintain our democracy.”

His campaign is spending $500,000 to run the 60-second ad on national television news and on local evening news in TV markets in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, as well as shorter versions on digital platforms.

It’s a theme Biden has returned to repeatedly.

He marked the first anniversary of the riot in 2022 by standing inside the Capitol’s National Statuary Hall — which was flooded by pro-Trump rioters during the attack — to suggest that his predecessor and his supporters had had “a dagger at the throat of America.”

Ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, the president repeatedly characterized Trump as a threat to democracy. That included a speech at Philadelphia’s Constitution Hall , where he said that the “extreme ideology” of Trump and his supporters “threatens the very foundation of our republic.”

On the second anniversary of the attack in 2023, Biden awarded presidential medals to 14 people for their work protecting the Capitol during the attack and decried “a violent mob of insurrectionists.” More recently, he said there was “no question” Trump supported an insurrection.

“Not even during the Civil War did insurrectionists breach our Capitol,” said Julie Chavez Rodriguez, manager of Biden’s reelection campaign, in a call with reporters this week. “But, at the urging of Donald Trump, insurrectionists on January 6, 2021 did.”

Trump now counters that the federal charges he’s facing related to Jan. 6 — as well as authorities in Maine and Colorado trying to keep him off primary ballots on grounds that he incited an insurrection — show that Democrats are the ones looking to undercut the nation’s core values.

“Joe Biden and his allies are a real and compelling threat to our democracy,” Trump senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles wrote in a memo this week.

Aside from the back and forth of politics, such arguments over who endangers America more could indicate a deeper problem.

“When each side starts talking about the other as a threat to democracy — whatever the reality is — that’s a sign of a democracy that’s deconsolidating,” said Daniel Ziblatt, a government professor at Harvard University and co-author of the book “How Democracies Die.”
