5 ways Google Assistant can help with homework
Take the headache out of homework with these tips.
I don't know how many times my teen has asked me a question about a topic I know nothing about during homework time and I've told her to Google it. It actually isn't bad advice.
Turns out, Google Assistant can help with a wide range of homework problems that hassle kids and parents every evening. These tips will make homework easier for everyone using Google Assistant.
Set study timers
Studies show that frequent breaks during tasks can lead to better concentration and higher productivity . To make pacing your child's study time easier, you can schedule homework breaks using Google Assistant's timer feature.
To set up a study timer, say, "OK Google, set my homework timer." Google will create a timer named My Homework and will ask you how long you want the timer to last. Once it gets your command, the timer will start counting down. Then let your kid know that when the timer goes off, it's break time.
5 new Google Assistant actions for your home and phone
Set reminders.
If your child is really bad about remembering when to study for tests, set up reminders using Google Assistant. To either the Google Assistant app or a Google Home speaker say, "OK Google, set a reminder." Then, just answer the assistant's questions to save the reminder.
At the beginning of study time ask, "Hey Google, what are my reminders?" to know exactly what needs to be studied that evening.
Foreign language classes can be tricky to study for, especially when mom or dad doesn't know the language. While it's not great at translating complicated sentences yet, Google Assistant can help with rudimentary questions like:
- Hey Google, what is the Spanish word for bathroom?
- OK Google, what does "n'est-ce pas" mean?
- Hey Google, how do you say milk in Russian?
Use it as a calculator
Have you ever checked your child's math homework and had no idea if the answer is correct? I've been there, too. Thankfully, Google has equation solving abilities.
For example, you can ask, "OK Google, what is pi times 49 squared?" Google Assistant will answer back, "The answer is 7,542.96."
Learn how to solve problems
Google Assistant can also teach you and your child how to solve math problems. For example, I've asked it, "Hey Google, how do you solve an algebraic equation with a fraction in it?"
For complicated processes like these, Google will search for a good YouTube video on the subject and will bring it up on devices with a screen, like Google Home Hub , Lenovo Smart Display or your phone.

Make back to school season easier with these AI features
Sep 03, 2024
[[read-time]] min read
Here’s how Google’s AI products and features can help students, educators, parents and guardians have their best back to school season yet.
Whether you’re perusing your syllabi, decorating your classroom or touring your child’s campus, back-to-school season can bring lots of excitement, and maybe a little stress, too. As three of my four kids head off to school this week, I wanted to share some of the new Google features and AI tools that can help us all make this school year successful.
For learners
With more ways to ask questions, learn new concepts and get interactive practice, these AI features provide powerful ways for students (mostly 18 and older) to deepen understanding and make learning more personal.*
- Chat with Gemini using school-issued Google accounts. We’ve heard from education institutions that privacy is top of mind when evaluating which generative AI tools to use. With additional privacy protections rolling out now, Google Workspace for Education users 18 and older can chat with Gemini knowing their data isn’t being used or reviewed by anyone to train or improve AI models. And in the coming months, we’re also bringing Gemini to teen students’ school-issued Google accounts after taking careful steps to help ensure it's safe and responsible for use in classroom settings.
- Study smarter with Gemini. Recent updates include responses from OpenStax textbooks and more opportunities for interactive practice. In Gemini Advanced , users 18 and older can upload documents and ask questions about them, and the new Learning coach Gem will provide study guidance tailored to you.
- Enhance your learning with YouTube. Now when you watch an academic video on YouTube, you’ll see relevant definitions of key concepts directly on the watch page. Our new conversational AI tool for users 18 and up makes it possible to figuratively raise your hand while watching a video to ask clarifying questions, get helpful explanations or take a quiz.
- Make materials approachable with NotebookLM. Users 18 and up can go from information to insights with the summarization features and chat functionality in NotebookLM , our note-taking and research assistant powered by AI. Now you can even upload image-based PDFs (like handwritten notes or visual diagrams), in addition to Docs, Slides, web URLs and more.
- Learn more about what you see with Google Lens . If you’re stuck on a homework problem in math, history or science, you can take a photo with Lens in the Google app to get step-by-step help, so you can learn to solve it on your own. Attending a class lecture virtually from your computer and want to find out more about an equation written on the board? Google Lens in Chrome desktop now allows you to select, search and ask questions without leaving your current tab so you can select that equation right from the video and learn more about it in the Chrome side panel.
- Understand topics faster with AI Overviews in Search : Earlier this year, we launched AI Overviews to help you find information more easily. Whether you’re studying math or art history, English or biology, you can ask questions like, “Explain the connection between lightning and thunder” and get the gist along with resources to click out and dive deeper.
For educators
AI can help give educators time back to invest in themselves and their students, while supercharging their creativity and productivity.
- Try out 30+ new Google for Education features. We recently released new AI-powered tools across Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Education to help educators make learning in school settings more personal and engaging, like bringing Gemini to Chromebook Plus and piloting Gemini in Google Classroom. With Google Classroom’s 10th birthday , we launched new features that help with reading, product integrations and data-driven instruction.
- Demystify AI with the Gen AI for Educators course. This two-hour self-paced course is designed to help teachers save time on everyday tasks, personalize instruction to meet student needs and enhance lessons and activities in creative ways with generative AI tools — no previous AI experience required.
- Personalize Gemini with Gems, custom AI experts for all kinds of topics. In a few easy steps, you can describe what you want your Gem to do and how you’d like it to respond. Gems will then help you complete tasks and reach goals based on your requests. Gems will also remember the instructions you provide, so you can access them to help save time on repetitive prompts or tackle complex tasks. Educators can create Gems for help with a variety of topics, like creating classroom lesson plans or differentiated activities for students with accommodations, or crafting emails to parents.
- Foster your students’ passion for AI and STEM. Share five tips with your students to responsibly level up their AI game. And check out the CS First Toolkit for everything you need to kickstart computer science education in fun and engaging ways for students in grades 4-8.
- Get tips on using our most popular education tools. With our Back-to-School Guide , make the most of Google tools to improve engagement, collaboration and classroom management. This guide gives you tips on using Google Workspace for Education, Chromebooks, Gemini and admin settings across apps, along with ways to keep guardians involved.
- Kick off the school year with engaging Digital Skill Lessons. The Applied Digital Skills Back to School Collection helps students get started in the classroom, express themselves, manage their well-being and stay organized, all while learning foundational digital skills. Each lesson comes equipped with easy-to-use lesson plans so you can jump right in.
For parents and guardians
These new controls and features allow families to manage their own digital ground rules and empower young learners to embrace AI safely.
- Reduce distractions during class with School time. This year, we introduced School time on Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatches . Over the next year, we’ll bring School time to even more devices including select Android phones, tablets and Samsung Galaxy Watches, enabling parents and guardians to limit their children’s device functionality during school hours.
- Help your teens navigate Gemini confidently and responsibly. Gemini has additional policies , safeguards and a teen-specific onboarding process to help protect young people from inappropriate responses. You can also explore resources together, like videos from our AI literacy video series explaining the five must-knows of generative AI and how to responsibly use AI to uplevel their learning .
Finally, no matter how you’re learning, teaching or supporting the students in your life, Chromebooks come in a variety of performance levels and price points, and they make great companions for a successful school year. Chromebooks have Google AI built in, and the new Chromebook Plus has even more next-level features powered by generative AI. Plus, schools can easily manage Chromebooks with admin tools, and parents and guardians can keep an eye on younger children’s activity with Family Link — so Chromebooks are simple and helpful to use, all school year long.
* Note that product and feature availability will evolve over time, may not be available in all markets and may not be available for users under the age of 18.

Google’s Circle to Search will help you with your math homework
Circle to search on android can now help students learn to solve mathematical word problems thanks to google’s new learnlm model..

Google is enhancing Android’s Circle to Search — the feature that lets you literally circle something on your Android phone’s screen to search it on Google — with a new ability to generate instructions on how to solve school math and physics problems .
Using an Android phone or tablet, students can now use Circle to Search to get AI assistance on mathematical word problems from their homework. The feature will help unpack the problem and list what the student needs to do to get the correct answer. According to Google, it won’t actually do the homework for you — only help you approach the problem.
Over the past year, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT has become a hot topic in the field of education, with plenty of concern over how students can and will use it to get work done quickly. Google, however, is explicitly positioning this as a feature to support education, potentially walking around some of the concerns about AI doing all of the work for students.
Later this year, Circle to Search will also gain the ability to solve complex math equations that involve formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. Google is using LearnLM, its new AI model that’s fine-tuned for learning, to make the new Circle to Search abilities work.
Circle to Search first launched on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in January and then on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later the same month. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible .

Google's new math app solves nearly any problem with AI: Here's how to use it
Stuck on a tricky math problem? Google's newest app will use AI to help you solve it.
Two years ago, Google announced the purchase of a math problem-solving app called Photomath. And earlier this week, that app was officially brought under the company's app umbrella .
Also: How ChatGPT (and other AI chatbots) can help you write an essay
The app itself isn't new, having debuted back in 2014 and picking up over 100 million downloads since. But it is now officially a Google app. It works on a wide range of math, from basic elementary school problems like division and multiplication to advanced math like trigonometry and calculus.
Once a problem is scanned with the app, the AI starts working. After a few moments, an answer is displayed, along with step-by-step details of how the problem was solved. The latter part is likely the most useful part of this app. Not only is a solution given, but a student can also learn how to get that same answer on their own.
While several other apps do the same thing, Photomath is often regarded by users as not only the most accurate but also the fastest.
The app's camera can recognize both printed and handwritten problems and even shows multiple methods for problems that can be solved in different ways. And it works without needing a data or Wi-Fi connection, meaning parents can let their kids use it without worrying about them wandering off online.
Also: The best AI chatbots
If you're thinking that an app like this is nothing but a way for a student to rip through homework in record time, that's not all it's used for. While that certainly does happen, it has plenty of other uses -- a parent checking their kid's homework, a student practicing before a test or catching up on a missed class, or simply a 24/7 tutor.
Since Google Lens already has a homework filter that's designed to solve problems, what's the need for Photomath? As AI becomes more and more present in the classroom, Google is likely just making sure it stays ahead of its competition. While nothing has been announced, there's a good chance Photomath will be integrated into Google Lens and even traditional Google search, making those features even more reliable.
