Online videos are hotter than ever, making up a whopping 82% of internet traffic.

Due to the popularity of video content, almost every Netizen wants to be a video content creator.

As much as people have the urge to become video content creators, not everyone knows the techniques and nuances of video creation.

Traditionally, there are many ways to create a video - you can shoot a video in a DSLR camera or the latest smartphone, then record a voiceover using any device, and edit/sync them both in a legacy video production tool. However, amongst the various ways, the easiest way to join the content creator club without owning fancy tools or involving big budgets is by creating text-to-speech (TTS) videos.

So, let’s learn about TTS videos and how to create them.

What is a text-to-speech video?

A video created with a realistic computer-generated text-to-speech voiceover rather than a self-recorded voiceover or that of a professional voice actor is called a text-to-speech video.

For example, have a look at this video,

Plenty of TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube channels use text-to-speech voiceovers in their videos, which is often much faster and cheaper than recording your own narration or using a professional voice actor for recording.

‍If you have always wanted to create text-to-speech videos for YouTube or any other platforms without prior knowledge, then this blog will guide you on how to make text-to-speech videos.

For a better reading, we have split this guide into three sections:

Step 1 -   Create a TTS Voiceover

Step 2 - Add the TTS voiceover to the video

Step 3 - Publish the TTS video on YouTube

Step 1: Create a TTS Voiceover

There are a lot of text-to-speech applications available online to create text-to-speech videos. But, among the many, we would best recommend Animaker’s Text-to-Speech app!

Animaker’s text-to-speech app is the No.1 AI-powered tool to generate ultra-realistic, crystal-clear audio narrations just from your scripts.

It offers 250+ unique realistic male, female, and kid voices to suit all your needs.

Compared to other TTS tools in the market, Animaker Voice has the edge in terms of affordability, ease of use, precision, and the diversity of realistic human voices available.

Let’s see how easy creating a voiceover with just text/script using the Animaker Text to Speech app is.

Here are the steps to create voiceovers in the Animaker Text to Speech app:

  • Enter your text/script
  • Customize your voice
  • Preview and Download voice

1. Enter your text/script

First, sign up for a free account with Animaker’s Text-to-Speech app if you don’t have an account already.

how to create text to speech video

Upon successful completion, you will be directed to the voice project window. Here, you will find the workspace in the center, voice customization settings on the right, and the download option on the top right.

how to create text to speech video

The central workspace is where you will enter your script/text for the voiceover. Consider it like a text box and start typing your text.

how to create text to speech video

You can also copy and paste the script/text to save time.

2. Customize your voice

Once you enter the text, you can pick a Gender , Language , and Voice for your voiceover.

There are 200+ voices available in more than 40+ global languages. Take your time to check out the voices and select one that best suits your needs.

Click the round audio wave button to adjust your voiceover’s Speed , Pitch , and Volume .

In case you change the speed, pitch, or volume and want to undo them, you can click the Reset button.

Also, you can add a breath or break effect between each word and adjust how long it should last. Simply click on the dot between two words to add a Breath or Break between them.

If you subscribe to the Pro Plan, you can tick the Auto Enhance checkbox and let AI enhance your voiceovers instead of manually adjusting the voice.

The best part about this functionality is that it automatically adds the breath effect, speed, pitch, volume, etc., based on the entered text. Isn’t that awesome?!

Once you are done adjusting the voice, it’s time to download it.

3. Preview and Download voice

After the customization, click the Preview button to play and preview the voiceover.

how to create text to speech video

Once you’re satisfied with the voiceover, click on the Download button in the top right corner of the window to instantly download your voiceover to your local computer folder in MP3 format.

With the Voice Pro premium plan, you can download the voiceover in .wav and .aac format.

how to create text to speech video

Wasn’t that too simple?!

It’s super easy to create realistic voiceovers without having to go through the trouble of recording the voiceover yourself or spending hefty time and dollars hiring a voiceover artist.

You can also check out this video tutorial to convert your script to speech in the Animaker Voice text-to-speech app.

Now that you have learned how to create a realistic TTS voiceover, let’s move on to adding the TTS voiceover to your video.

Step 2: Add the TTS voiceover to the video

Once you have created and downloaded the TTS voiceover, the next step is to add the voiceover to your video.

You can use any of the video editing tools to stitch the voiceover. However, we recommend Animaker , an all-in-one DIY Video Creation app, to create professional-quality videos online without professional expertise.

Here are the steps to add the TTS voiceover to your video using Animaker:

  • Upload the video and voiceover.
  • Sync the voiceover and preview

1. Upload the video and voiceover

First, create a free account with Animaker. Once you log in, select the Create button > Create a video > Blank page.

Now, you will be directed to the project workspace. Here, you can upload the video by using the upload option on the left side of the screen. Clicking on the Uploads option will open the Uploads tab; use the upload button here to quickly navigate and upload your videos.

how to create text to speech video

Animaker allows you to upload videos up to 25 GB in size for free. That’s bonkers, right?

how to create text to speech video

Once the video has been uploaded and processed, click on it. Now, the video will appear in the workspace.

how to create text to speech video

Similarly, you can upload the voiceover audio file into the project, and it will appear right underneath the video layer in the timeline.

how to create text to speech video

Bonus tip - You can also create your videos from scratch using the Animaker Video Creation Suite.

Animaker offers you the option of adding animated characters, background music, custom audio files, subtitles, properties, GIFs, and much more right from within the app!

To learn how to create a full-length animated video either from a blank project or with a pre-built template in Animaker, check out our blog - How to make animated videos .

Now, let’s head on to see how to sync the voiceover and preview the final TTS video.

2. Sync the voiceover and preview

Once you have both the video and voiceover audio in the workspace, you can adjust them in the timeline per your needs.

To adjust when the audio should start or stop playing, simply click and drag the corners of the audio file in the timeline to the left or right on either side.

This way, you can easily sync the video and voiceover files. Once you are done, click on the Preview button at the top pane of the workspace beside the Publish button.

It’s that easy to stitch your voiceover to your video using Animaker.

how to create text to speech video

Here’s a preview of the TTS video we created by following the above steps

That’s fantastic, right?

Now, let’s head on to publishing your TTS video on YouTube.

Step 3: Publish the TTS video on YouTube

After previewing the video, if you are satisfied with your work, it’s time to publish your video, Animaker helps you instantly reach your target audience comfortably by publishing your videos directly to social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

Click on the Publish button and choose your relevant social media platform.

how to create text to speech video

Once you upload a vertical video and publish it on YouTube, it will be uploaded to the YouTube Shorts section directly.

Apart from publishing on the platforms directly, you can also download your videos from here for future use.

It’s THAT simple to create and publish a text-to-speech video with Animaker!

I hope this helps you launch your content creation journey and proudly put your first video out there!

Remember that a Text-to-speech video with a personal touch is always a cool way to share stuff online as a content creator. So go ahead and start weaving your magic out there!

how to create text to speech video

Text-to-speech is a brilliant solution when you need a voiceover for your video, but don't have the time, equipment or the confidence to record it yourself.

Making text-to-speech videos can be a bit of a hassle - you have to create an audio file, then add text-to-speech to a video editing software and piece it together to make a cohesive video.

It's not rocket science, but it's definitely not something a complete beginner can make in an hour.

What if you could convert text not only into speech but also into video with an (almost) human presenter only using one tool? No cameras, microphones, editing tools or skills required.

Well, you can.

In this blog post, you will learn how to easily create a professional-looking video with a text-to-speech voiceover, all in one browser window.

For all of your visual learners, we have a video tutorial:

What are the benefits of using the text-to-speech feature in videos?

Naturally, nothing beats natural-sounding voice overs made by a real human.

But what if you need to translate your video into different languages? What if you don't like the sound of your own voice? What if you're working with a limited budget?

Let's discuss how a text-to-speech feature can solve all of the above problems.

Benefit #1: No need to record separate audio files

Have you ever recorded your own voice and couldn't handle the cringe when listening to it? We definitely have. 😬

Also, recording audio for a voiceover requires decent equipment (a microphone and a video editor software), which can cost quite a bit.

And let's be realistic, a voiceover recorded on your iPhone simply doesn't sound that great. 🙉

That's where text-to-speech software comes in handy: you don't need any equipment whatsoever, and you can avoid the oh-so-dreaded cringe.

Sounds like a win-win to us.

Benefit #2: Large variety of text-to-speech voices

A common fear is that text-to-speech voices sound robotic. 🤖

And that might have been the case 5 years ago, but in 2022 text-to-speech technology has gotten pretty damn good, and AI Voices don't sound as robotic as you think.

The added benefit to text-to-speech sounding (almost) human is that you can choose from a large variety of accents, dialects, and other voice variations. You can make your voiceover narration sound professional, easy-going, calm, or lively, all at the click of a button.

Besides, if you aren't happy with the way it sounds, you can always adjust pronunciation using Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML for short).

Benefit #3: Quick and cheap localization and translation

If you have any experience with traditional video production, you know that translating/localizing a video into multiple languages is a hassle.

Unless you speak all the languages you want to translate your video into, hiring a translator and voiceover actor will be costly. 💸

Oh, and if you need to re-edit or re-film the video to localize it... Get the cash ready. And be prepared to wait a few weeks for the end result.

With a text-to-speech generator, all you need is your translated text to generate audio in another language in just a few clicks.

And if you're using a text-to-video maker , you can create voice overs and videos using only text.

Well, let us show you.

How to make text-to-speech videos in Synthesia

Here's how you can transform text to speech and make engaging YouTube videos using a text-to-speech video maker called Synthesia.

Step #1: Create a video script

First, make sure you have your video text ready.

Whether you're transforming an existing article into a video , or you're creating video content from scratch, you need to have all the information condensed into a video script.

Use no more than 3-4 sentences per video slide to keep the video short and engaging.

Step #2: Choose a template

The easiest way to get started with creating amazing videos is by using video templates .

You can of course start from scratch, but if you have no video editing or design experience, templates provide a solid structure and visual language to your video.

For example, Synthesia has over 55 templates for various needs: explainer videos , how-to videos , training videos , marketing videos , and more.

To get started with a template in Synthesia, click on ' Templates' on the left-hand side, choose a template and click on 'Create video'.

Step #3: Paste your text and choose a text to speech voice

This is the part where you add AI text-to-speech to your video.

Copy your text and paste it into the script box scene by scene.

You will notice that the AI video editor automatically selects a text-to-speech voice and languages.

Feel free to click on the language selector, and choose the accent, dialect, and mood of the voice.

Just make sure that the language on the video editor matches the language of your text. Otherwise, we can't guarantee you will like the results. 😅

Step #4: Visualize your text

The voiceover audio part is now done, but narrated videos would be pretty boring without any visuals to accompany the text-to-speech voices.

Don't know how to edit videos ? No biggie.

You can create professional-looking YouTube videos in Synthesia without any special skills or knowledge.

There are 4 types of visuals you can add to make your text-to-speech videos engaging.

Option 1: AI presenter

Remember that audio file our text-to-speech software generated in step #3?

Well, you can add a human-like AI presenter to your video that will narrate your text-to-speech videos.

Basically, you can make a talking head video with no real humans or cameras.

Here's how to add an AI presenter in just a few clicks:

Click on ' Avatar ' on top of the video maker, and choose the one you like best.

Option 2: Text on screen

If you really want to emphasize a point, duplicate the voiceover with text on screen .

Add text to your video by clicking on 'Text' . Then, format it to your liking.

Option 3: Stock footage

Some ideas just need something extra to help bring them to life.

You can use stock videos and images in Synthesia to illustrate the information.

Or upload your own footage, if you have it.

To add images and videos in Synthesia, go to 'Media' and browse the selection, or upload your own images or video clips.

Option 4: Screen recordings

If you need to demonstrate a process on screen for a how-to video or show off your software's specks for an explainer video , screen recordings are essential.

To create a screen recording in Synthesia, simply click on 'Record'.

When you're done recording, you can crop, trim or loop your screen recording.

Watch our video tutorial for more details:

Step #5: Download the video

Woohoo! 🎉 Your text-to-speech video is almost ready!

All you have to do now is click on ' Generate video' , add captions if needed and let the tool do its magic. 🪄

Once the video is generated, you can share it, download it or embed it.

Ready to create text-to-speech videos in just a few clicks?

If you want to create professional videos without breaking the bank and without spending hours editing video content, why not give Synthesia a go?

How to Add Text to Speech to Videos: The 6-Step Process

Need narration for your videos, but don’t know the first thing about audio recording? No problem. Find out how to add text to speech to videos here.

How to Add Text to Speech to Videos: The 6-Step Process

The question isn’t whether or not to use video as a marketing tool— 86 percent of businesses do, and 92 percent of marketers call the channel “important” to their overall strategy. The question is: How do you make your videos more engaging than your competitor’s?

As anyone who’s ever tried to create an industry explainer video can tell you, narration—yes, the humble voiceover—is an indispensable tool for getting your messages across successfully. Used correctly, it can make your content that much more digestible than the competition’s.

But don’t start shopping for mics just yet. Text-to-speech (TTS) technology allows you to create quick video voiceovers directly from your script. Keep reading to learn how to add text to speech to video content—and all the ways it enhances the final product.

What does that final product sound like? Here’s an example of marketing content with a TTS voiceover:

How to Add Text to Speech to Videos (and Why You Should)

Why use TTS when you could record narration yourself? Well, unless you’re a trained voice actor, it’s surprisingly difficult to create audio content that sounds anything but amateurish—and hiring a voice actor, plus studio time, is both expensive and time-consuming.

Text-to-speech also has the advantage of being extremely flexible. If you need to update the content of your video, you can simply type out the new script and generate the audio from your own computer. That’s a lot faster—and infinitely more affordable—than tracking down your voice talent and booking another recording session.

Text-to-speech production tools let you swap out video narration on the fly. Contact ReadSpeaker to learn more about turning those scripts into speech without the hassle.

A black woman smiles while looking at her phone

In addition to the ease of use and flexibility that TTS provides content creators, a TTS voiceover helps your content connect with broader audiences. Create a video with text to speech to:

  • Make your video content more engaging. Viewers can’t absorb your message unless they’re paying attention. A blend of TTS spoken content and on-screen text gives viewers two ways to engage, drawing them in and conveying your ideas more effectively. Speech is more engaging than text for many consumers, and the combination of both will serve the broadest viewership possible—without anyone’s eyes glazing over. Clickable videos let viewers play TTS narration themselves, further improving engagement.
  • Improve accessibility and usability. With TTS, you can add audio descriptions of your video’s content for people with vision impairments. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) success criterion 1.2.5 requires audio descriptions for video. The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), which publishes WCAG, recommends integrating these descriptions into the narration script. For a dramatic scene, WAI suggests fitting visual descriptions into spaces in the main audio track of your video (and planning for those spaces if necessary). A TTS voiceover can also help viewers with dyslexia and other learning disabilities—and if someone has low literacy in your language, TTS is a powerful aid to comprehension.
  • Emphasize your main points. Viewers pay attention to speech, especially if it’s used sparingly. Add TTS narration strategically to introduce new topics, hammer home your main point, and highlight the value of whatever you’re discussing. Introduce TTS narration at key points in your video, or create an interactive video experience by allowing users to click on-screen buttons to trigger speech.
  • Localize your content with voiceovers in multiple languages. Text to speech won’t solve the translation challenge; you’ll still need to hire translators in all your markets. But with synthetic voices in more than 50 languages, ReadSpeaker TTS allows you to quickly generate audio files for each of these translations. That makes it faster and easier to localize your videos for audiences across the globe.
  • Create more effective corporate training materials. A combination of visual and audio content improves learning outcomes, while multilingual materials improve inclusion. Both of these benefits make TTS ideal for corporate training videos. If that’s not enough, consider that TTS lowers production costs while reaching more diverse audiences. That’s just what virtual training provider Jutten discovered when the company began using TTS for its retail simulation training programs. “With text-to-speech technology, we eliminate the set-up costs and the variable costs decrease significantly,” said Edward Bosma, technical director at Jutten. “And because Jutten’s strategy consists of doing more international business, text-to-speech technology makes the company much more flexible.”

Most of all, TTS narration is easy . It really only takes six steps to add TTS to a video.

How to Add Text-to-Speech to Videos

Text to Speech Video Integration in 6 Easy Steps

There are two schools of thought on when to introduce TTS into the video production process:

  • TTS first: If you’re organizing your video entirely around TTS narration, generate the TTS content first, then edit to match. Similarly, if you can’t integrate your audio action descriptions into the narration, plan scenes with enough silences to add this accessibility feature later. That requires creating TTS files prior to shooting or assembling scenes.
  • TTS last: Usually, adding TTS will be one of the last steps before launching your video. If you’re using voice to introduce a video course, emphasize a central idea, or provide a translation, don’t worry about TTS until you have at least a rough cut together.

Regardless of when you add TTS to a video, follow these six steps to get the job done.

1. Write your script.

If you’re creating information-heavy content that has a lot of text on the screen, you might not have to write a word; instead, remove some of the on-screen text and add it to your voiceover script instead. That’ll give you more room for images and create a more engaging experience. If you’re using TTS for emphasis, identify your key points and write them down. Whatever you have to say, you’ll need to write it down before converting it to speech.

2. Choose your TTS voice.

Choose a TTS voice like you would an actor: What tone, accent, or performance style best expresses your theme? Listen to a few of ReadSpeaker’s TTS voices. To truly differentiate your brand, though, invest in a bespoke branded voice. The ReadSpeaker VoiceLab uses the latest AI technology to craft custom TTS voices, tailored to your brand traits. Use a unique branded voice to narrate your videos, smart speaker apps, digital assistants, interactive voice ads, and more: It’s like a brand logo for audio content.

3. Enter your text into a TTS production tool.

With your script in hand, generating audio voice files is as simple as pasting text into a ReadSpeaker production tool. ReadSpeaker speechMaker is robust, cloud-based TTS creation software. (For offline TTS generation, choose speechMaker Desktop. ) For all options, batch processing makes it easy to produce conversations between multiple TTS characters, or simply produce a whole video’s worth of short clips with a single upload.

If you plan to generate lots of video voiceovers, your best bet is speechMaker Desktop. See boxed text below to learn more about this TTS tool for video production. Or, if you already have your TTS production tool picked out, skip ahead to Step 4.

ReadSpeaker speechMaker Desktop: The Ideal Tool for Adding TTS to Videos

With speechMaker Desktop—a full-service, self-contained TTS-production application—lifelike, synthetic voices and a simple, user-friendly interface finally meet. After a quick installation on your Windows operating system, the application is ready to use—even when not connected to the internet. Contrast that with cloud-based TTS production tools (like our alternative offering, speechMaker) which are online-only.

The intuitive interface of speechMaker Desktop feels very similar to Microsoft Word. A blank screen greets you, ready for your video script. Once you insert the text, the fun really begins: It instantly converts your voiceover script into audible speech in the natural-sounding voice of your choice.

ReadSpeaker speechMaker Desktop - Text to speech video tool

And with 110+ voices in 35+ languages, you’re sure to find voices that are perfect for your video. Here are just a few of speechMaker Desktop’s TTS voices:

With speechMaker Desktop, you can create unlimited audio files, then save and export them for video production (see Step 6 below). You can always fix mistakes or edit older files, which helps save time and resources. Instead of hiring an expensive voice actor or recruiting an employee to re-record a message, you can quickly make the changes yourself within speechMaker Desktop, using a voice, or multiple voices, that feel familiar to your audience.

These capabilities make speechMaker Desktop perfect for video production, whether you’re creating corporate training content or your next big marketing campaign.

4. Adjust pronunciation.

ReadSpeaker’s production tools—including speechMaker Desktop—give you full control over pronunciation and performance. An integrated SSML editor (it’s like HTML, but for TTS) allows you to change emphasis at the word level with a point-and-click interface. Add pauses for dramatic effect or to simulate the breaths of a human speaker. Adjust speed, pitch, and volume. A custom speech dictionary allows you to specify pronunciation for acronyms, industry jargon, proper nouns, or regionalisms.

5. Download completed files.

Once the script sounds just right, download audio files in the format of your choice—MP3s are usually fine for text-to-speech video applications, but ReadSpeaker supports uncompressed and lossless file formats, too.

6. Import audio files into your video production software.

The end result of the top four steps will be a handful of audio speech files, ready for your editing timeline. Simply upload them to the video editor of your choice, mix with the existing soundtrack, and your narration is ready to go—without recording a word. That’s all it takes to add text to speech to video content.

Voice   Generator

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

Much research indicates that users are more willing to watch videos than text content. Converting your article into a video and posting it to different platforms will help you reach new audiences. Moreover, with the rise of AI technology, it is super easy and fast to convert text into video, allowing you to create high-quality videos quickly.

How to turn a blog into a YouTube video?

Converting your blog to a YouTube video is a great way to repurpose content and get some new viewers. Simply open the text to video tool, paste the blog content or the page URL and then you will get an ai-generated video. To make it more recognizable, you can choose from YouTube intro and outro templates to build your channel. Add some like and subscribe elements if needed. Finally, export the video and share it on YouTube directly.

Is the generated video editable?

Sure. You have full control over the generated video. You can adjust the video effect, add text, music, transitions, and make more custom adjustments as you need.

Musk’s new grok upgrade allows x users to create largely uncensored ai images, with grok's new ai image generator, x users put musk's "freedom of speech" to the test..

Benj Edwards - Aug 14, 2024 10:22 pm UTC

An AI-generated image of Donald Trump and catgirls created with Grok, which uses the Flux image synthesis model.

On Tuesday, Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, announced the beta release of two new language models, Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini, available to subscribers of his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). The models are also linked to the recently released Flux image-synthesis model, which allows X users to create largely uncensored photorealistic images that can be shared on the site.

"Flux, accessible through Grok, is an excellent text-to-image generator, but it is also really good at creating fake photographs of real locations and people, and sending them right to Twitter," wrote frequent AI commentator Ethan Mollick on X. "Does anyone know if they are watermarking these in any way? It would be a good idea."

In a report posted earlier today, The Verge noted that Grok's image-generation capabilities appear to have minimal safeguards, allowing users to create potentially controversial content. According to their testing, when prompted, Grok produced images depicting political figures in compromising situations, copyrighted characters, and scenes of violence.

An AI-generated image created with Grok, which uses the Flux image-synthesis model, of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in an airplane.

The Verge found that while Grok claims to have certain limitations, such as avoiding pornographic or excessively violent content, these rules seem inconsistent in practice. Unlike other major AI image generators, Grok does not appear to refuse prompts involving real people or add identifying watermarks to its outputs.

Given what people are generating so far—including images of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris kissing or giving a thumbs-up on the way to the Twin Towers in an apparent 9/11 attack—the unrestricted outputs may not last for long. But then again, Elon Musk has made a big deal out of "freedom of speech" on his platform, so perhaps the capability will remain (until someone likely files a defamation or copyright suit).

People using Grok's image generator for shock value brings up an old question in AI at this point: Should misuse of an AI image generator be the responsibility of the person who creates the prompt, the organization that created the AI model, or the platform that hosts the images? So far, there is no clear consensus, and the situation has yet to be resolved legally, although a new proposed US law called the NO FAKES Act would presumably hold X liable for the creation of realistic image deepfakes.

On Thursday morning, Musk weighed in on people using the AI image generator on X. In response to an open question from Mollick about why xAI chose to use Flux to allow users to generate images without extra content filters, Musk wrote , "We have our own image generation system under development, but it’s a few months away, so this seemed like a good intermediate step for people to have some fun."

With Grok-2, the GPT-4 ceiling still holds

Looking beyond images, in a release blog , xAI claims that Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini represent significant advancements in capabilities, with Grok-2 supposedly outperforming some leading competitors in recent benchmarks and what we call "vibemarks." It's always wise to approach those claims with a dose of skepticism, but it appears that the "GPT-4 class" of AI language models (those with similar capability to OpenAI's model) has grown larger, but the GPT-4 barrier has not yet been smashed.

"There are now five GPT-4 class models: GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, Gemini 1.5, Llama 3.1, and now Grok 2," wrote Ethan Mollick on X. "All of the labs are saying there is room left for continued giant improvements, but we haven’t seen any models truly leap above GPT-4… yet."

xAI says it recently introduced an early version of Grok-2 to the LMSYS Chatbot Arena under the name "sus-column-r," where it reportedly achieved a higher overall Elo score than models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4 Turbo. Chatbot Arena is a popular subjective vibemarking website for AI models, but it has been the subject of controversy recently when people disagreed with OpenAI's GPT-4o mini placing so highly in the rankings.

According to xAI, both new Grok models show improvements over predecessor Grok-1.5 in areas like graduate-level science knowledge, general knowledge, and math problem-solving in benchmarks that have similarly proved controversial . The company also highlighted Grok-2's performance on visual tasks, claiming state-of-the-art results in visual math reasoning and document-based question answering.

Grok-2 benchmark testing results provided by xAI.

The models are now available to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers through an updated app interface. Unlike some of its competitors in the open-weights space, xAI isn't releasing the model weights for download or independent verification. This closed approach stands in stark contrast to recent moves by Meta, which recently released its Llama 3.1 405B model for anyone to download and run locally.

xAI plans to release both models through an enterprise API later this month. The company says this API will feature multi-region deployment options and security measures, like mandatory multifactor authentication. Details on pricing, usage limits, or data-handling policies have not yet been announced.

Photorealistic image generation aside, perhaps Grok-2's biggest liability is its deep link to X, which gives it a tendency to pull inaccurate information from tweets. It's a bit like if you had a friend who insisted on checking the social media site before answering any of your questions, even when it wasn't particularly relevant.

As Mollick pointed out on X, this close link can be annoying: "I only have access to Grok 2 mini right now, and it seems like a solid model, but often seems ill-served by its RAG connection to Twitter," he wrote . "The model is fed results from Twitter that seem irrelevant to the prompt, and then desperately tries to connect them into something coherent."

This story was updated at 9:30 AM on August 15, 2024 to include a quote from Elon Musk about Grok's image generator.

FACT FOCUS: A look at claims made by Trump at news conference

Trump lashes out at Harris, recommits to a Sept. 10 debate at hourlong news conference

In his first news conference since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, former President Donald Trump said he would debate her on Sept. 10 and pushed for two more debates. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for more than an hour, discussing a number of issues facing the country and then taking questions from reporters. He made a number of false and misleading claims. Many of them have been made before.

Here’s a look at some of those claims.

CROWD SIZES

Image

CLAIM: “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken — I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.”

THE FACTS: Trump was comparing the crowd at his speech in front of the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the crowd that attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial.

But far more people are estimated to have been at the latter than the former.

Image

Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service . The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address.

Moreover, Trump and King did not speak in the same location. King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , which looks east toward the Washington Monument. Trump spoke at the Ellipse , a grassy area just south of the White House.

CLAIM: “Nobody was killed on Jan. 6.”

THE FACTS: That’s false. Five people died in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and its immediate aftermath. Pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol that day amid Congress’ effort to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Among the deceased are Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter shot and killed by police, and Brian Sicknick, a police officer who died the day after battling the mob. Four additional officers who responded to the riot killed themselves in the following weeks and months.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by a police officer as she climbed through a broken part of a Capitol door during the violent riot. Trump has often cited Babbitt’s death while lamenting the treatment of those who attended a rally outside the White House that day and then marched to the Capitol, many of whom fought with police.

DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION

Image

CLAIM: “The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden, and I’m no Biden fan, but I tell you what, from a constitutional standpoint, from any standpoint you look at, they took the presidency away.”

THE FACTS: There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democratic Party from making Vice President Kamala Harris its nominee. That process is determined by the Democratic National Committee.

Harris officially claimed the nomination Monday following a five-day online voting process, receiving 4,563 delegate votes out of 4,615 cast, or about 99% of participating delegates. A total of 52 delegates in 18 states cast their votes for “present,” the only other option on the ballot.

The vice president was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by the party’s deadline following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race on July 21.

THE ECONOMY

CLAIM: Suggesting things would be different if he had been in office rather than Biden: “You wouldn’t have had inflation. You wouldn’t have had any inflation because inflation was caused by their bad energy problems. Now they’ve gone back to the Trump thing because they need the votes. They’re drilling now because they had to go back because gasoline was going up to 7, 8, 9 dollars a barrel.”

THE FACTS: There would have been at least some inflation if Trump had been reelected in 2020 because many of the factors causing inflation were outside a president’s control. Prices spiked in 2021 after cooped-up Americans ramped up their spending on goods such as exercise bikes and home office furniture, overwhelming disrupted supply chains. U.S. auto companies, for example, couldn’t get enough semiconductors and had to sharply reduce production, causing new and used car prices to shoot higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 also sent gas and food prices soaring around the world, as Ukraine’s wheat exports were disrupted and many nations boycotted Russian oil and gas.

Still, under Biden, U.S. oil production reached a worldwide record level earlier this year .

Many economists, including some Democrats, say Biden’s $1.9 trillion financial support package, approved in March 2021, which provided a $1,400 stimulus check to most Americans, helped fuel inflation by ramping up demand. But it didn’t cause inflation all by itself. And Trump supported $2,000 stimulus checks in December 2020, rather than the $600 checks included in a package he signed into law in December 2020.

Prices still spiked in countries with different policies than Biden’s, such as France , Germany and the U.K. , though mostly because of the sharp increase in energy costs stemming from Russia’s invasion.

IMMIGRATION

CLAIM: “Twenty million people came over the border during the Biden-Harris administration — 20 million people — and it could be very much higher than that. Nobody really knows.”

THE FACTS: Trump’s 20 million figure is unsubstantiated at best, and he didn’t provide sources.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 7.1 million arrests for illegal crossings from Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024. That’s arrests, not people. Under pandemic-era asylum restrictions, many people crossed more than once until they succeeded because there were no legal consequences for getting turned back to Mexico. So the number of people is lower than the number of arrests.

In addition, CBP says it stopped migrants 1.1 million times at official land crossings with Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024, largely under an online appointment system to claim asylum called CBP One.

U.S. authorities also admitted nearly 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela under presidential authority if they had financial sponsors and arrived at an airport.

All told, that’s nearly 8.7 million encounters. Again, the number of people is lower due to multiple encounters for some.

There are an unknown number of people who eluded capture, known as “got-aways” in Border Patrol parlance. The Border Patrol estimates how many but doesn’t publish that number.

CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris “was the border czar 100% and all of a sudden for the last few weeks she’s not the border czar anymore.”

THE FACTS: Harris was appointed to address “root causes” of migration in Central America. That migration manifests itself in illegal crossings to the U.S., but she was not assigned to the border.

NEW YORK CASES

CLAIM: “The New York cases are totally controlled out of the Department of Justice.”

THE FACTS: Trump was referring to two cases brought against him in New York — one civil and the other criminal.

Neither has anything to do with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The civil case was initiated by a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James. In that case, Trump was ordered in February to pay a $454 million penalty for lying about his wealth for years as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to stardom and the White House.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a state-level prosecutor, brought the criminal case . In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

___ Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin and Elliot Spagat and economics writer Christopher Rugaber contributed to this article. ___

An earlier version of this story mixed up “latter” and “former” in the third paragraph. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, drew a far larger crowd than Donald Trump’s speech near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump falsely claims Harris campaign used AI to fake crowd in Detroit

By Laura Doan , Erielle Delzer

Updated on: August 12, 2024 / 8:27 PM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump on Sunday falsely claimed Vice President  Kamala Harris ' campaign lied about a crowd attending her Aug. 7 rally in Detroit, Michigan. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said a photo of the crowd was created using artificial intelligence and that the crowd in fact "didn't exist."

However, numerous videos from the event at Detroit Wayne County Metropolitan Airport show a large crowd attended, and the videos show a crowd similar to the one seen in the photo. Local reporters for the news site MLive estimated 15,000 people were present as Air Force Two arrived.

The photo Trump questioned was posted to X by a Michigan campaign staffer for Harris, who said he received it from a colleague.  A Harris campaign official told CBS News that the photo was taken by a campaign staff member, and the official sent what they said was the original photo along with other visuals captured by the staffer.

Photo of crowd waiting for Harris campaign rally

Metadata from the photo analyzed by CBS News showed it was taken on an Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max on Aug. 7 at 6:28 p.m. ET. A side-by-side comparison of the original photo and the version that appeared on social media showed that the social media version had been brightened and cropped. There were no signs of AI manipulation.

Similar photos were also taken by news agencies covering the event, including  Reuters  and Getty Images, like the one seen below.

Crowd of supporters wait for a Harris-Walz campaign rally at Detroit airport

Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in deepfake detection, said in a post on LinkedIn that he received multiple requests to analyze the image after it went viral online.

Farid said he found no evidence that the image was AI-generated or digitally altered. Farid said the text on the signs and plane show none of the usual signs of generative AI.

The Harris campaign responded to Trump's accusations on Truth Social, replying to one of his posts by sharing a video from the event that showed Air Force Two arriving. "In case you forgot @realdonaldtrump: This is what a rally in a swing state looks like."

But Trump supporters on social media continued to share debunked images and spread false claims.

One of those bogus images on Telegram and X showed AI-generated faces with a caption claiming they were "fake Harris supporters" allegedly circulated by the Harris campaign. However, CBS News found this photo was not circulated by the Harris campaign. An X user who runs a parody account claimed to be behind the image and said it was generated using AI.

A screenshot of what looked like a Craigslist advertisement for paid actors to attend a political event at the Phoenix, Arizona Convention Center, also circulated over the weekend. But the ad was fake, and versions of it have been debunked since at least 2017 by AZ Central , Snopes , and Reuters .

Trump has boasted about crowds at his rallies in recent days. At a news conference on Thursday, the Republican presidential nominee said he thought that more people attended his speech in front of the Ellipse near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, than Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.

Trump acknowledged official estimates showed King had a larger crowd size. According to the National Park Service , approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, where King spoke. Approximately 53,000 people attended Trump's speech on Jan. 6, 2021, according t o the House Select Committee that investigated the assault on the Capitol that took place later that day.

"Nobody has spoken to crowds bigger than me," Trump said.

Kamala Harris Addresses Economy In Speech—Here’s What To Know About Her Policy Agenda

Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled more details about her economic agenda in a speech Friday in North Carolina, proposing an “opportunity economy” as the Democratic nominee focused on lowering the price of groceries and prescription drugs and addressing the housing crisis with an eye on bolstering the middle class.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at Wake Tech Community College in Raleigh, N.C., on Aug. 16.

Grocery Prices: The candidate would work in her first 100 days to help Congress pass a national ban on “price gouging” for food and groceries, as well as give the Federal Trade Commission and prosecutors authority to go after companies they determine price gouge, support small businesses in the industry, take a closer look at mergers between big grocery companies and “aggressively” investigate price-fixing in meat supply chains specifically.

Housing Costs: Harris wants to provide $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time home buyers and is calling for the creation of three million new housing units within the next four years, proposing a tax credit for developers who build starter homes and investing $40 million in an innovation fund to tackle the housing crisis.

Rental Costs: Harris would also expand a tax credit for housing developers who build affordable housing rental units, and is calling on Congress to pass legislation that would stop predatory investors who buy up rental homes and collude with each other to raise rental prices.

Child Tax Credit: Harris proposed giving families a $6,000 tax credit for newborns in their first year of life, and restore a pandemic-era tax credit of $3,600 per child for middle and lower-class families.

Taxes: Harris also wants to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit for workers in lower-income jobs, which would cut taxes by up to $1,250, and has previously said she would continue President Joe Biden’s promise not to raise taxes on American households earning $400,000 or less annually, and does support raising taxes for high earners and corporations, according to The New York Times.

No Tax On Tips: Harris has separately endorsed a plan to get rid of taxes on tips for hospitality and service workers, echoing a proposal by former President Donald Trump—which has been criticized by some experts—though a campaign official told CNN tips would still be subject to payroll taxes, and would include an income limit and guardrails to prevent people like hedge fund managers from taking advantage of the policy.

Prescription Drug Prices: Harris proposed a $35 cap on insulin and capping out-of-pocket expenses on prescription drugs at $2,000 per year on Friday, also saying she would speed up Medicare negotiations on the price of prescription drugs—after the Biden administration announced a deal lowering costs on 10 medications—and crack down on anti-competitive practices in the pharmaceutical industry that cause higher prices.

Healthcare: The Harris campaign also announced her intention to work with states to cancel Americans’ medical debt, and she proposed expanding subsidies for Affordable Care Act plans that would save health insurance customers an average of $700 on their health insurance premiums.

Paid Leave: Harris has not released a specific paid leave proposal, but she has previously co-sponsored 12-week paid leave legislation, Politico notes, with Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., telling the outlet, “I absolutely believe that when they are in office, we will get a paid leave bill done finally.”

Minimum Wage: Harris called for raising the minimum wage in a Las Vegas speech earlier in August, but her campaign has not specified how high she believes it should be raised.

Fed Independence: Harris has vowed to maintain the Federal Reserve’s independence after Trump said he believed “the president should have at least [a] say” on the Federal Reserve’s decisions, with Harris telling reporters, “The Fed is an independent entity and as president I would never interfere in the decisions that the Fed makes.”

Crucial Quote

Harris said Friday she’d be “laser focused on creating opportunities for the middle class” if elected president, calling for “an economy where everyone can compete and have a real chance to succeed.” “Now is the time to chart a new way forward, to build an America where everyone’s work is rewarded and talents are valued, where we work with labor and business to strengthen the American economy, and where everyone has the opportunity not only to get by, but to get ahead,” the vice president said.

What To Watch For

Harris said in her North Carolina speech that she intends to unveil more economic proposals in the weeks ahead. The vice president has still not issued a full policy platform or unveiled proposals for policy issues beyond the economy, and those are also expected in the near future.

How Do Harris’ Policies Compare With Biden’s?

Harris’ economic policy agenda is largely in line with Biden’s economic platform, with some tweaks to emphasize causes that are more important to her, like the child tax credit. “Same values, different vision,” a Harris aide told The Guardian. “She’s not moving far away from him on substance, she will highlight the ones that matter most to her.” The initial plans from Harris’ campaign also suggest the vice president plans to be more aggressive in her policy approaches than Biden, however, as polls have suggested voters hold dim views of how the president has handled the economy. While Biden has also opposed price gouging, Harris’ proposal to enable the FTC and U.S. attorneys to go after companies that hike up prices goes beyond what the president has proposed, Politico notes , and her proposed $40 million investment in the housing crisis is double the amount the Biden administration spent.

Harris’ economic agenda released Friday didn’t go fully in depth about her proposals, which The New York Times reports is by design. The Times reported prior to Harris’ speech that the Harris campaign has adopted a “strategic vagueness” for her economic proposals, believing that being more of a “blank slate” will help ward off attacks and attract more support from business groups.

How Do Harris’ Policies Compare With Trump’s?

Trump’s economic agenda is largely focused on raising tariffs on imported goods, which Harris has said she opposes. The ex-president has also called for cutting taxes and regulations in hopes of lowering inflation, including lowering the corporate tax rate, and has encouraged increasing oil production in order to lower energy prices. In addition to his “no tax on tips” proposal that Harris has also endorsed, Trump has called for ending taxes on Social Security benefits, which Harris has not yet responded to. Experts believe the ex-president’s proposal could speed up Social Security and Medicare becoming insolvent, with the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projecting exempting taxes on benefits would result in Social Security and Medicare receiving $1.6 trillion less in revenue between 2026 and 2035. The Trump campaign opposed reports of Harris’ economic proposals Wednesday, with spokesperson Steven Cheung saying in a statement, “Kamala Harris can’t hide from her disastrous record of skyrocketing inflation … Americans are struggling under the Biden-Harris economy, and now she wants to gaslight them into believing her bald-faced lies.”

42%. That’s the share of voters who trust Harris more to handle the economy, according to a Financial Times/University of Michigan poll released Sunday, versus 41% who trust Trump more. That’s down from Trump holding a six-point lead over Biden in July, though the poll also showed 42% believe a Trump presidency would leave them better off financially, while only 33% said the same for Harris.

Key Background

Harris became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in July after Biden stepped down suddenly from the presidential race, following weeks of pressure over mounting concerns about his mental fitness. While the vice president has quickly garnered Democrats’ support and risen in the polls, Harris has released few concrete policy proposals in the first few weeks of her campaign—drawing some criticism as a result—with her speech Friday expected to be the most substantive remarks she’s given on policy so far. Her focus on the economy comes as polling has repeatedly shown it’s the most important issue to voters in this election cycle, with the vice president hoping to attract support amid low approval ratings for Biden’s handling of the economy. Harris’ speech also comes days after news that inflation fell in July to its lowest point in more than three years, with federal data released Wednesday showing inflation at 2.9% in July, the first time it’s been below 3% since March 2021.

Musk’s Trump Talk: After Glitchy Start, a Two-Hour Ramble

Problems in the livestream renewed questions about X’s ability to handle big events, but it also showed how the platform can still grab attention.

how to create text to speech video

By Kate Conger and Ryan Mac

Kate Conger reported from San Francisco and Ryan Mac from Los Angeles.

At 8:35 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, a live audio stream on X of a conversation between Elon Musk and former President Donald J. Trump flickered to life after a 35-minute delay — but only for a moment.

Mr. Trump’s mic came on, and a shuffling sound was heard. A second later, his mic cut out. Mr. Musk’s account, which had been logged in and ready, then momentarily disappeared from the conversation entirely.

Seven minutes later, the glitches appeared to be resolved and the discussion began. Mr. Musk, who has endorsed Mr. Trump ’s presidential run, and Mr. Trump greeted each other as “Donald” and “Elon.” They then began a friendly chat about immigration, the economy and President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. The two men talked for over two hours with more than one million people listening in at the same time, according to X.

“I congratulate you,” Mr. Trump, who appeared to lisp at times, said to Mr. Musk about the livestream’s audience. “Do I get paid for this or what?”

The conversation on X between Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump had been billed as a triumphant moment for the social media platform, which Mr. Musk bought in 2022. He had been trying to woo Mr. Trump to become active again on a site he once wielded like a megaphone before being barred in 2021 and then, by Mr. Musk’s doing, reinstated . In the end, the event’s bumpy beginning and ensuing banter showcased both the weaknesses and strengths of X under Mr. Musk.

The hiccups getting the livestream going renewed questions about X’s ability to handle high-profile events. Without providing evidence, Mr. Musk blamed the snafu on a “massive” distributed denial of service attack, a type of cyberattack that uses floods of malicious web traffic to overwhelm sites and knock them offline.
