Basic super chocolatey chip cookies.
Yields: 5 dozen (60) small cookies
- 2 ¼ cups (270 g) of flour
- 1 teaspoon (6 g) of salt
- 1 teaspoon (5 g) of baking soda
- 2 sticks (230 g) of butter
- ¾ cup (130 g) of packed brown sugar
- ¾ cup (150 g) of granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of vanilla extract
- 1-2 cups (170-340 g) of chocolate chips
Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yields: Approximately 5 dozen (60) medium sized cookies
- 2 cups white sugar
- 2 cups brown sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 2 cups (4 sticks) of butter (softened)
- 6 cups of self-rising flour (adapt this for elevation and humidity as needed; make sure the cups are level)
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking soda
- 1/4 cup milk
- 4 cups of chocolate chips
Vegan Dairy- and Egg-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yields: 40 cookies
- 2 cups (470 ml) flour
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking soda
- 1 cup (240 ml) margarine
- 3 ⁄ 4 cup (180 ml) brown sugar
- 3 ⁄ 4 cup (180 ml) vegan sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract (essence)
- Egg replacer equivalent of 2 eggs (Ener-G Egg Replacer works best, but you can also mix together 2 tsp. cornstarch and 1/4 cup water)
- 12 ounces (340 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

- 2 1 ⁄ 2 cups (590 ml) (315g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking powder

Mathew Rice, pastry chef, responded : "When I'm working on my dough, I use room temperature butter and room temperature ingredients, and I don't mix the dough too much after after I add the flour. These are all variables for better cookies."
- Do not over-stir the dough. While the dry ingredients should be added gradually, don’t do so little at a time that your dough turns to brick. Aim for adding the dry ingredients in four or five batches.
Making Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Use coarser sugar for thicker, chewier cookies. When sugar dissolves, it acts as a tenderizer that interferes with dough structure. This increases spreading because finer sugar dissolves more easily than coarser sugar. So if you want your cookies to remain thick and chewy, use coarse sugar (or use fine sugar for the opposite effect). If you decide to use powdered sugar for extra crispiness, make sure it doesn't have corn starch in it, or you'll get unexpected results. [1] X Research source

Troubleshooting Problems: Trying to Fix Your Cookies
- My cookies turned out dry and burnt... Chocolate chip cookies turn out dry for lots of reasons. Sometimes you over-mix the dough too much and they start to dry and harden. Avoid mixing the dough too much for better effects. Adding a little water or butter prevents the dough from getting dry or burnt as well. You may also need to reduce your heat on the oven, all ovens are different and vary. One more note: Because of the heat and temperature in your house, cookies continue to bake, even after you take them out of the oven. Try under-baking cookies for better results.
- My cookie dough is crumbly... Remember the temperature of your ingredients is important when making cookies. The butter must be at room temperature and should be soft. When adding the flour, mix slowly and never over-mix, even a little. This always ruins cookies and makes them crumbly. Another thing, follow each requested ingredient that this recipe is asking for. If it says use granulated sugar, use it. Don't go and switch to caster sugar, this ruins the cookie dough.
- The bottom of my cookies are burnt... Be careful of rolling your cookies too large. The time it takes to cook the larger cookie will burn the bottom. You might also want to see the cookie tray you used. Dark non-stick trays make cookies bake faster so this could be the case. Another problem could be the rack in your oven. If it's too low, the heat on the bottom gathers into the cookies and bakes faster as well.
- My cookies are raw but the edges are brown... Your oven is too hot! Cookie dough takes time to bake, but the edges usually brown quicker since they catch the most heat. Take the cookies out of the oven and lower the temperature on your oven. Have the cookies sit on top of the oven, they'll still bake outside of the oven but without getting the edges burnt. Another tip: Try freezing the dough before you bake them, since the colder dough won't spread and bake as fast.
- My cookies won't get off the tray... First, have the cookies cool before trying to tackle them. Next, use a spatula and slowly pick them up. If the cookies break mix it with ice cream. In the future, spread non-stick greasing spray or butter/margarine on the cookie tray before using it. Parchment paper can work as well.

Introduction: Chocolate Chip Cookies
This is an easy recipe to make delicious chocolate chip cookies! :)
Step 1: Gather Your Kitchen Materials
- 1 large mixing bowl
- 1 small mixing bowl
-1 electric mixer
-Baking Sheet
-Wire cooling rack
-Wax or parchment paper
-Non-Stick cooking spray
-1 tablespoon and teaspoon from a set
Step 2: Gather Your Ingredients
-2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1 teaspoon salt
-1 cup (2 sticks) of softened butter
-¾ cups granulated sugar
-¾ cups brown sugar (packed)
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-2 large eggs
-2 cups chocolate chips (either milk, dark, or semi-sweet)
Step 3: Preheat Your Oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit
Step 4: combine dry ingredients.
In your smaller mixing bowl, combine your flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk it together and put it to the side.
Step 5: Mix Wet Ingredients
In your larger mixing bowl, beat together with your electric mixer the granulated sugar and your softened butter until it is creamy. Then, once your mixture is light and creamy, add in your brown sugar and vanilla. Beat it all together until everything is combined.
Step 6: Add Eggs
Add in the eggs one at a time to the butter, sugar, and vanilla mixture after it is all incorporated. Beat the mixture after each egg addition. Beat the mixture again once both eggs are mixed in. Beat this mixture until it is creamy.
Step 7: Combine Flour Mixture to Butter Mixture
Gradually beat in the flour mixture by 1/4 cup to the wet ingredients mixture. Every time you add a section of the flour mixture make sure you beat it fully into the butter mixture. Use a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to wipe down the sides of the bowl. Repeat this until all of your flour mixture is fully incorporated.
Step 8: Add Chocolate Chips
Stir in the chocolate chips to your cookie dough.
Step 9: Cover Your Pan
Once your dough is all mixed together, grab your baking sheet. You can either use a cooking spray or wax or parchment paper. If you use wax or parchment paper, get a piece and cover the bottom of your tray with it. If you are using cooking spray, just spray the bottom of your pan.
Step 10: Scoop Your Cookies!
Drop the cookie dough onto the cookie sheet by the tablespoon or 1/4 cup. Make sure they are at least 2-3 inches apart so that they do not merge together while baking.
Step 11: Bake Your Cookies
Cook the cookies for 9 to 11 minutes, or until golden brown. When the cookies are done take them out of the oven, off the tray and transfer them to the wire rack. Start your next batch with the leftover dough.
Step 12: Enjoy!

3 tips for making Donna Kelce’s chocolate chip cookies
If you’re ready to whip up your own batch, I’ve got a few tips to help you get them just right:
1. Dissolve the baking soda.
Donna’s recipe calls for dissolving the baking soda in hot water before mixing it into the dough. This helps the baking soda distribute more evenly throughout the dough, ensuring a good rise and chewy texture.
2. Chill the dough.

1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup pecans (optional)
Directions:
Total Time: About 1 hour, plus chilling
Yield: 6 to 7 cookies
Melt butter in the microwave. Pour into a bowl or stand mixer and let cool 15 to 20 minutes.
Add brown and white sugar to the bowl and mix for four minutes. Add eggs, one at time. Then add vanilla and mix. Add dissolved baking soda.
In a separate bowl, add all-purpose flour, cake flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt, and mix. Slow add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients ½ cup at a time. Add the chocolate chips and pecans, if using. Then chill the dough for at least 3 hours or more.
Preheat the oven to 350°F, then line a baking sheet. Let the dough come to room temperature, then scoop into balls, leaving 2 inches between cookies.
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until lightly golden around edges. The top should bounce back when touched. Remove and cool before enjoying.

Can artificial intelligence make a tastier chocolate chip cookie recipe than a human being?
At the risk of upsetting millions of grandmothers everywhere, we set out to find an answer.
We recruited Dan Souza, chief content officer for America’s Test Kitchen , for our experiment. He matched the Test Kitchen’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe against recipes from two AI programs, ChatGPT and DishGen.
Why chocolate chip cookies?
“Cookies, when you make small changes to ingredients, we find that you get some pretty massive differences,” Souza told Morning Edition ’s A Martinez. So, it's kind of a fun one to use as a litmus test for how successful a recipe development could be.”
How did the experiment work?
Souza asked each AI program to come up with a chocolate chip cookie recipe. The results were nearly identical. Souza said there’s a good reason for that.
“What it gave me was a pretty traditional chocolate chip cookie recipe. If you look on the back of Toll House [chocolate chip] morsels, which is where most chocolate chip cookie recipes kind of originate, it was a pretty good mimic to that. You have your classic ingredients, you have your flour, you've got white sugar and a little bit of brown sugar, a couple of eggs,” Souza said. “What you find with these engines is they're pulling from all over the place and so you get sort of an average output, and it looked like a really average cookie to me.”

Souza said both of the programs were fairly straightforward. He typed in prompts of what he was looking for and the results popped up quickly.
DishGen had a “modify” button if, for example, you wanted to change the recipe to make the cookies chewier. But there were some frustrations, as well.
"The craziest thing is I would do the search — I did it multiple times on different days — and I actually got completely different recipes. So, the same prompt but I had a different recipe, which I found like totally infuriating. If I had something that I liked and I wanted to make it again, I couldn’t.”
Artificial intelligence's thirst for electricity
The taste test.
In our view, the cookies from ChatGPT and DishGen were pretty good but a little boring. A variation on the ChatGPT recipe that was intended to make the cookies more chewy actually made them too chewy.
The Test Kitchen’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe lived up to its name. The cookies were crunchy on the edges and chewy in the middle. They had a nutty flavor with a hint of toffee.
Souza said the Test Kitchen recipe has many innovations that the AI engines could not pick up on.
“It's seemingly simple, but there's a lot going on there," Souza said. "One of the things we've done is we browned the butter , which does two things. It adds tons of rich, nutty flavor. But liquefying the butter also means that you get a denser cookie, which eats chewier. So, it's really, really valuable.”
Souza said the AI recipes have a lot of potential, but that the technology is not quite there yet.
“It’s missing the people part of it. So, if you're tasting a chocolate chip cookie recipe that your mom has made forever, there's a big emotional pull there. And that actually influences how you taste something. You know, we eat with our eyes, but we also eat with all of our emotions and kind of everything that we bring into the picture. You're never going to get that from an AI.”

Wally Amos, an indefatigable entrepreneur who in 1975 took a $25,000 loan from a few friends in Hollywood to start Famous Amos, one of the first brands to push high-quality cookies in its own stores and one of the world’s best-known names in baked goods, died on Tuesday at his home in Honolulu. He was 88.
His children Shawn and Sarah Amos said the cause was complications of dementia.
At a time when flavorless, preservative-packed cookies were about the only thing available to consumers not blessed with a baker in the family, Mr. Amos’s confections stood out. Derived from a recipe he had learned from his aunt, they used real ingredients, no coloring or chemicals added, and he kept them as close to handmade as possible, even as his company exploded into national distribution through the early 1980s.
What began with a single store in Los Angeles that made $300,000 in revenue its first year became by 1981 a $12 million company (about $42 million in today’s currency), with dozens of Famous Amos stores across the country and packaged products sold in supermarkets and department stores like Bloomingdale’s as well.
His cookies were small — bite-size, for most mouths — and came in three varieties: chocolate chip with peanut butter, chocolate chip with pecans, and butterscotch chips with pecan. All were handmade, at the store.
“You can’t compare a machine-made cookie with a handmade cookie,” Mr. Amos told MSNBC in 2007. “It’s like comparing a Rolls-Royce with a Volkswagen.”
