Planning on buying an LG smart TV? It pays to know what issues you may encounter when using LG TVs so you can work around any problems that may arise.

Here are six of the most common problems encountered with LG TVs and their fixes.

1. False Contouring or Posterization

You may encounter some unrealistic strips of solid color within an image onscreen. This issue is called False Contouring or Posterization.

Unfortunately, LG has yet to address these issues, which many users have reported.

But you can spot this issue early on, before your purchase.

If possible, when buying a TV, it would be good to test the actual unit you are intending to take home to check for any display issues.  

2. Colors are Inconsistent

Problems with color usually start when the TV turns off by itself, followed by a popping sound. After this, you will notice some changes in color consistency.

Unfortunately, this happens when the TV is overused and is often rooted in the power supply in your TV.

Often, a capacitor inside the TV is the culprit. 

• Should that be the case, all you need to do is take the TV to an authorized repair center and have the damaged parts replaced.
• Don’t forget to ask for a repair warranty when available.

3. No Sound Output

There are instances that your LG TV may not have any audio signal or sound coming out from the speakers.

This may be remedied by a reboot of your TV.

• There are two ways of rebooting an LG TV.
• The first is to turn it off, unplug it, and plug it again after a minute or two.
• Another way of doing it is to press and hold the volume down and power key on the remote control at the same time until the TV reboots. Once you see the LG bootup logo, release the buttons on your remote control.

Should there still be no sound, try plugging in a set of external speakers and see if the audio comes out through the speakers.

If there is sound coming from the external speakers, you need to have the speaker connections checked.

Otherwise, it is probably a parts issue involving the amplifier inside the TV.

You will need to have it checked by a licensed repair center to replace the defective part.

4. HDMI 2.1 Ports Not Displaying Properly

Issues with the HDMI 2.1 ports are particularly troublesome for LG’s OLED TVs, particularly the 9 and X series. Luckily there is a firmware update for this issue.

That issue is particularly unusual since LG promotes its OLED TVs’ gaming capabilities , considering it has a high 48 Gbps bandwidth, with HDMI support on the 9 series and 40 Gbps HDMI support for the 2020 X series.

There are two issues you may encounter when it comes to HDMI 2.1 on the OLED TVs.

#1 First of all,

You only get a black screen when integrating Nvidia’s G-Sync Variable Refresh Rate at 120 Hz frame rate. This issue happens in all bit depth or resolutions.

#2 The second issue,

happens more often with the X series and reduces output signals in RGB/120 Hz/4:4:4 to 4:2:2 chroma subsampling.

The issue happens even when G-Sync is off and regardless of output resolution, as the image quality is notably degraded.

Some people theorize that the issue might be with the Nvidia video card, or the HDMI cables being used are not formally certified for 2.1 by HDMI.org.

Others also wonder if the second issue involves the X series having a lower bandwidth, but it turns out it also happens with 8 and 10-bit sources.

To fix this issue, LG released a firmware update in September 2020.

• You can access the firmware update by going to the Settings menu at the upper right corner of the Home screen. Go to All Settings, then select the General menu on the left.
• From here, you can scroll to About this TV, then look for the Check for updates option. Download and install the update, then reboot your TV for the firmware to take effect.

5. Streaming Apps not Working

Many LG TV users noted instances of some streaming services, like Netflix or Hulu, not working with their TVs.

• The first thing you need to do is make sure your LG TV is connected to the Internet.
• Assuming your TV is connected to the router, and your network is doing fine, consider checking if the streaming platform works on other devices, such as your smartphone or computer.

For this troubleshooting, let’s use Netflix as an example. (These tips will also work for other apps installed on your LG TV.)

• If the app works on your other devices, consider rebooting the TV, as outlined earlier.
• You may also restart your router by turning it off, unplugging the power cable, and plugging it in again after two minutes.
• Consider updating your TV’s firmware and the Netflix app. Ideally, you should be running the latest updates for flawless operation. They don’t update at the same time, so you ought to check periodically for updates.

Another thing to consider is to delete and reinstall Netflix.

• There are instances when files get damaged, rendering the whole app unusable. By deleting and reinstalling, you get to restore the app to its original working state.
• To uninstall Netflix, press the Home or Start button on the remote to open the launch bar.
• Go to the Netflix app and hover until an arrow appears. Click on the arrow, then choose the X symbol. Confirm the deletion of the app by pressing Ok.
• To reinstall, open the launch bar as in the uninstall process, then launch the LG Content Store.
• Look for the App tab and open it. Search for Netflix, then click install.

The next thing to check is the location settings on your TV.

• Location refers to the country that you set in the profile of your TV.
• When you first set up your TV, you were asked to input your location.
• If you set up your location to a different country, chances are it is conflicting with the location of your Internet provider. That will cause issues with Netflix.
• Remember that Netflix has content meant for different locations. You need to set it to your current country to resolve this issue.

To change the location:

• Press the Home or Start button and open the launch bar.
• Click on the Settings button at the upper right corner then go to All Settings.
• Open General on the left side of the screen, then go to Location.
• Select your country, and that should fix things.

Should fixing the Location settings still not work, your last resort is to do a Factory Reset.

• A Factory Reset should be your last option, as this entails setting up, reinstalling apps, and logging in all your credentials from scratch.
• To do a Factory Reset, open the launch bar and open the Settings menu.
• Go to General, then click Reset to Initial Settings. You’ll be asked to input your password after.
• Depending on your TV, you will be prompted with instructions on how to proceed.
• Once the reset is done, you will have to set up your account and apps again.

6. Horizontal lines appear on the screen

Some LG TV users have reported seeing horizontal lines on the screen that are very noticeable when the TV is turned off and on.

The problem is often attributed to a low signal strength from HDMI ports. This issue may be remedied by swapping out HDMI cables.

General Pros and Cons of LG TVs

Oled tvs have better image quality.

While you may still get plain LED TVs from LG, the company is busy ramping up its OLED TVs.

• OLED, or Organic LED, is a technology that uses a carbon-based film that’s sandwiched between two conductors that light up the film.
• The primary benefit of this technology is that it lets the screen light up pixel by pixel without affecting the color quality of other pixels on the screen, unlike traditional LED panels that light up everything at the same time.
• That means you can get deep blacks while other pixels maintain sharp colors. Colors are more natural, as well.

And while other TV manufacturers have OLED TVs too, they all get their panels from LG.

You might be able to get OLED from other brands, but nothing beats the pioneer.

Better HDR Experience

LG TVs supports Dolby Vision and HDR10 content, which come in handy when watching content from Netflix and Apple TV.

• These image enhancements increase the dynamic range of the screen and improve the contrast between whites and blacks to deliver more realistic picture quality.
• If you compared it to one of its strongest competitors, Samsung, LG TVs delivers a 12-bit color gamut and 10,000 nits of brightness, while the latter can only handle a 10-but color gamut and 4,000 nits of brightness using its proprietary HDR10+.
• Likewise, Dolby Vision is used more often by streaming services.

Disadvantages of LG TVs

• LG TVs are slightly more expensive than their direct competitors.
• OLED TVs from LG are more prone to burn-in or permanent image retention than LED TVs. This is true of all OLED TVs. 
• The webOS interface is not as sleek as other smart TV platforms.

Final Thoughts

Many of the common issues involving LG TVs are common among other brands of smart TVs.

Having a TV that doesn't display what you want can be frustrating. There are many different reasons why your TV might not be working properly or why the image doesn't look right. Below are some of the most common issues with TVs we're asked about; even though troubleshooting your TV is on a case-by-case basis, hopefully this will help you.

Of course, the first step to any technology-related problem is to check if all components are properly plugged in. Check your HDMI connections, and if possible, unplug and plug them in again. If that doesn't fix anything, find your related issue below. Once you fix it, there's no need to do anything else.

TV not displaying the image

• For starters, make sure the input on the TV is set to the input your device is plugged into.
• Verify that the input is put in properly.
• Change HDMI cables.
• Enable the highest bandwidth setting on the TV. TVs will have settings for 'HDMI Mode', or something similar, where you can choose between '1.4', '2.0', or '2.1', or have other settings called 'Full Color' on Vizio and 'HDMI Ultra Deep Color' on LG. This represents the TV's bandwidth; an  HDMI 2.1  source won't display properly if you set the TV to '1.4', as you'll be limited in the resolution and frame rate. You should always enable the necessary bandwidth because even setting it higher than needed can cause compatibility issues.

HDR not displaying properly The proper HDR format isn't playing

• Make sure your source is playing HDR. You may see Dolby Vision or HDR10+ logos from streaming apps appear when you first play the content. However, not all TVs do this, and they don't specify which HDR format is playing, like on Samsung TVs.
• Check to see if the TV supports the  format  your content is in. LG and Sony TVs don't support HDR10+, while Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision. If it doesn't, it will usually end up playing in the basic HDR10 format instead.
• Enable full bandwidth settings. If it's set to the lower bandwidth settings, like HDMI 1.4, the TV may think you don't want HDR content to be played.

Note: TVs should usually automatically switch into HDR when content is played. If not, check to see if there are any HDR settings or contact customer support.

Experiencing high input lag when gaming

•  TVs only allow for low input lag when in Game Mode. Outside of Game Mode, input lag is higher, and although most people won't notice any difference, changing it into Game Mode has a positive effect on reaction-based games. Make sure the TV is either set to the Game picture mode or Game Mode is enabled; the specific settings depend on the brand. For example, Hisense, Sony TV, and LG TVs have a Game picture mode, but other brands like TCL have Game Mode toggles that you can use with any picture mode.
• Restart the TV. Even in Game Mode, there may be a bug that doesn't put the TV in Game Mode. For example, the  Sony X800H  has an issue where it has high input lag if you turn on the TV and it's already in Game Mode; you need to switch it out of Game Mode then back in for it to work.

Auto Low Latency Mode not working

• Check to see if it supports it. The Xbox Series X has support for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). This allows the TV to switch in Game Mode when you launch a game from a compatible device for low input lag, but you need to make sure the TV supports it. If not, there's nothing you can do. Sony TVs don't have ALLM support but can detect when the PS5 is connected, and they automatically switch into Game Mode, but only if you enable Auto Picture Mode.
• Enable Game Mode setting.
• Make sure it's enabled on the console.
• If ALLM isn't working, simply switch into Game Mode when you play a game.

Variable refresh rate support not working

• The same concept as ALLM setting: check to ensure both the console and the TV support the same  VRR format . The Xbox Series X supports FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR, so G-SYNC doesn't work with it.
• Enable any VRR or Game Mode settings. Sometimes enabling Game Mode alone enables the VRR.
• Verify to see if it's enabled with your console/PC.
• Contact customer support.

Note: For both ALLM and VRR, we check with the PS5 and Xbox Series X to see what signals the TV supports from the consoles. It's best to check our reviews to see if your TV is compatible with either. For example, you can see the Samsung QN90A QLED's compatibility photos with the  PS5  and  Xbox Series X .

Chroma 4:4:4 not displayed properly

• If it's a TV we tested, check to see if it properly supports  chroma 4:4:4 . This is a type of signal that helps increase text clarity when using it as a PC monitor. Sometimes, a TV simply cannot display chroma 4:4:4 properly.
• Set the TV to PC Mode. This is often the best way to display 4:4:4. Roku TVs automatically switch the TV into PC Mode when a PC is connected. For most TVs, you'll need to change the input label for the input you're using to PC for it to enter PC Mode.
• Enter Game Mode. Sometimes, Game Mode has the same effect as PC Mode with low input lag and chroma 4:4:4.
• Lower the frame rate or resolution in your PC. 4:4:4 requires extra bandwidth, so limiting the frame rate or resolution can help with it.

Can’t find your recommended settings

• Check to see if  we reviewed  your model.
• Click the ‘Settings’ tab at the top of the review page.
• If we did not review your model, visit our  calibration page .

The screen is too dark

• Increase ‘Backlight’ setting (‘Brightness’ on Sony and Samsung TVs). Keep in mind that some TVs have both the 'Backlight' and 'Brightness' settings. The 'Backlight' setting increases the intensity of the backlight, but 'Brightness' (or 'Black Level' for some brands) is an image processing setting, and we don't recommend changing it.

Note: Lower-end TVs aren't usually as bright as the premium models, so if you're in a well-lit room and the screen is hard to see, it usually means it's not bright enough to fight glare.

Colors don’t pop

• Increase ‘Backlight’ (‘Brightness’ on Samsung and Sony TVs)
• Change 'Color Temperature' to something colder. Colder colors have a blueish tint, giving them the appearance that they pop more. 
• Increase the ‘Color’ setting. This usually saturates the colors, so while it technically makes the image less accurate, it makes colors pop.
• Use the ‘Dynamic’ or ‘Vivid’ picture modes. These picture modes will use a combination of stronger colors and cooler temperatures to make the colors more vibrant.

Picture skips/jumps

• Disable  motion interpolation . Motion interpolation is a feature meant to increase the frame rate of your content to match the refresh rate of the TV. However, if it's not effective, it can drop frames and make the image look worse.
• Try different playback sources, like different streaming apps or another DVD. It can often be the problem of the source and not the DVD.

Ball/puck disappears when watching sports People/objects are moving too fast Motion is blocky

• Disable motion interpolation. Another downfall of motion interpolation features is that small objects can often get lost, or there are too many motion artifacts.

White objects/clouds too yellow or blue

• Reset white balance & color space to default. It's possible you accidentally played with some settings that affected the picture.
• Change the color tone. You should adjust each of these to your preference. What looks like perfect white to one person may look different to another.

Colors look wrong Skin tones look wrong

• Reset white balance and color space adjustments to default. If you understand how to calibrate the TV, you should be able to provide the best picture possible to you.
• Use different color tone/temperature according to your liking.
• Use different picture modes. Once again, adjust these to your preferences.

Blacks look gray

• Reset the ‘Brightness’ setting (‘Black level’ on Sony TVs).
• Make sure the source and TV RGB settings match.
• Enable  local dimming . For most TVs, setting it to 'High' is the most effective, but it's not always the case.

 Note: If it's an  IPS LED TV , blacks will always look gray. This is especially noticeable in dark rooms.

 Note: All LED TVs have lighter blacks than plasma and OLED.

Brighter spots in dark scenes

• Gently massage the affected area with a soft cloth to improve. Keep in mind TVs are delicate, and if you're unsure of yourself, it's better to simply not do it.

Note: This is a common issue, so if there's no improvement, only make a return if it's so bad that it ruins your viewing experience.

Blooming around bright objects in dark scenes

• Adjust the local dimming setting to your liking. Often, if a TV's local dimming setting is bad, it will cause blooming in dark scenes. Either lowering the setting or disabling the local dimming can fix this.

Note:  Black uniformity  on TVs varies between units, and it's all about the luck of the draw. You can't fix uniformity issues. Only LED TVs will experience these blooming issues as  OLEDs  have perfect black uniformity.

TV not displaying maximum resolution

• Usually, this has to do with the source and on the TV, so check the source's settings. If you're watching something like a YouTube video, it's as simple as checking to see what resolution it's playing at.

Dark portions are pixelated

• Enable noise removal settings. Often these settings help remove any gradients but can also cause a loss in fine details.

• If neither works or is possible, you will need to cope with the issue. This is a common problem with low-quality media.

Grain on the picture

• For content other than movies, enable noise removal settings. The main point of these noise removal settings is to remove gradients/graininess. 
• Improve the connection (if you're streaming) or the source quality (if it's already low-quality).
• Reset the color space and white balance settings.
• Try different HDMI cables and different HDMI inputs on the TV.

Note: Some movies, especially older movies, are naturally grainy.

Picture looks out of focus

• Disable motion interpolation.
• This makes the picture a bit less accurate.
• Adjust the aspect ratio setting. A stretched-out image looks fuzzy and would look better in its standard format, but that would mean having black bars at the sides, for example, with 4:3 videos.

Note: Low-quality media often looks fuzzy, so if those first steps don’t help, the only solution is to watch  higher-quality video .

Sparkles/banding appearing on screen after calibration

• Reset white balance and color space adjustments to default.
• Try a new HDMI cable.
• Try a different picture mode.
• Contact manufacturer support.

Stuck pixels on screen

• Pixels are hard to get unstuck. Trying connection a PC to the TV, and use  this tool  to try and unstick.
• Try applying gentle pressure on the stuck pixel. Turn the TV on, and then off, then check.

Often, if you open the TV and you see many stuck pixels, it's better to return it. Pixels are stuck when they display the same color, no matter the content.

Temporary Image retention

• Watch regular content for a few minutes.  Temporary image retention  happens after exposure to high-contrast elements, like the news, and it usually disappears after a few seconds. There's nothing you can do to fix it, and it varies between units.

Permanent burn-in

• Sadly, there's no way to fix  permanent burn-in , which only happens with OLEDs. Burn-in happens after constant exposure to static elements for many hours without watching other content. So if you only use your TV to watch the news a few hours every day, your OLED may experience burn-in. However, we don't expect this to be an issue for those who watch varied content.

TV not outputting sound

• Make sure HDMI or audio cable(s) are securely connected to both the TV and the receiver/headphones.
• Make sure TV is set to output audio to your source device (sound settings).
• Make sure the source device is outputting compatible sound (PCM, DTS, Dolby Digital are safe bets).
• Try a different audio cable.
• See if other devices can play on the receiver.
• If the receiver doesn't work for anything, contact the receiver manufacturer’s support.
• If the receiver does work for other devices, contact the TV manufacturer’s support.

Note: You also need to make sure your TV supports the specific audio format. As of 2020, LG TVs don't support passthrough for DTS formats, so you can't expect it to play that audio file.

Sound is delayed

• When using external speakers, try to see if there are ‘lip sync’ or ‘audio delay’ features on the receiver.
• If you're using the TV’s speakers, check to see if there are any 'lip sync' or 'audio delay' settings.
• Set the input to PC mode through the settings menu.

Note: If you're using a Bluetooth-connected soundbar or headphone, you'll likely hear delay because of the latency associated with Bluetooth devices.

Can't stream 4k video on 4k TV

• Make sure the service/subscription allows 4k streaming; some videos, like on YouTube, will have an option to choose the resolution, so make sure it's set to 4k.
• Make sure your wireless network and internet connection have sufficient bandwidth (usually at least 25 Mbps). If your internet is slow, it will take a while to achieve the proper 4k image.

Video won't stream in TV's browser

• There's no direct fix as the TV doesn’t support Flash video.
• Workaround: Connect PC to use your browser for videos.

Can’t connect TV to Wi-Fi

• Restart the TV and your internet router. Check to see if it works after.

• Another possibility is that one of your display drivers is corrupted. You can try updating your drivers to see if this fixes the problem. If not, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers or remove the batteries.
• Finally, the problem could be caused by a hardware issue in LG TVs. You should take your computer to a qualified technician for diagnosis and repair if you suspect this.

8. Sound With No Picture

10. Not Showing up on Airplay

Not Showing up on Airplay is among the common LG smart TV problems. The solutions for this problem are the following.

If you’re not showing up on Airplay, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the issue with your LG Tv. First, check to ensure your iOS device is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV or AirPort Express.

• Then, launch the AirPlay mirroring settings on your iOS device and make sure that AirPlay is turned on.

Without Wi-Fi, your smart TV isn’t really a smart TV. The display may still be working, but you can’t binge from your favorite streaming service without an internet connection.

In this guide, we’ll show you a few simple solutions for when LG TV Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting or when your Wi-Fi won’t connect in the first place. Let’s get started.

1. Power Cycle Your LG TV

Smart TVs are basically just computers, complete with many of the same quirks. When your PC is being buggy, you restart it, and that’s exactly what we’ll do with your TV.

Pressing the power button won’t completely reset your TV. Instead, we’ll need to cut off its power source long enough to force a restart.

• Unplug your TV from the power outlet.
• Hold down the power button on your TV (not on the remote) for at least 60 seconds.
• Plug your TV back into the wall outlet.

Try powering on the TV again. If this worked, you were probably just dealing with some random bug. Unless the problem returns, it’s not worth spending any more time worrying about it.

2. Disable the LG Quick Start Feature

LG TVs have a couple of pretty cool convenience features that I would generally recommend taking advantage of. However, they can sometimes cause issues with Wi-Fi connections. In this and the next fix, we’ll turn these features off to see if that gets your internet working.

The first of these features, Quick Start+, changes the way your TV turns off. Instead of fully powering down, it will go into standby mode. That way, it can power back on faster.

Just follow these steps to turn off the Quick Start+ feature on your LG TV:

• Press the Settings button on your remote.
• Go to All Settings.
• Open the General tab.
• Navigate to Quick Start+ and toggle it off.

Now try your internet connection again. Turning off Quick Start+ will also decrease the energy consumption of your TV, so you may want to leave it off even if this doesn’t solve your Wi-Fi problem.

3. Turn Off Your TV’s Simplink Feature

Just like Quick Start+, Simplink can cause Wi-Fi connection problems on your LG TV. Simplink, which you may know by its more common name of HDMI-CEC (consumer electronics control), lets you control HDMI devices using your TV’s remote control.

These steps will turn off Simplink:

• Select Simplink (HDMI-CEC).
• Toggle the On/Off toggle to off.

Test your Wi-Fi connection again. Make sure that you still have Quick Start+ turned off, too, as it could have been either or both of these features causing the problem.

4. Restart Your Router

Wi-Fi routers are finicky. Rather than try to debug every little problem that could be going on, it’s easier to restart the device and let it sort itself out. You’ll generally want to do this once a month or so anyway to keep your network functioning at its best.

Before proceeding, make sure that nobody in your home is actively using the internet. This process will shut down all network and internet connections for roughly five minutes during the reboot.

Okay, let’s get started.

• Unplug the power cable from your router and modem.
• Wait 30 seconds.
• Plug the power cables back in.
• Wait a few minutes for the modem and router to boot up.

Once the Wi-Fi network appears in your TV’s network list again, try to connect. Most likely, the network issues won’t come back if a restart fixed them. However, we’ve still got a few more solutions left in case this wasn’t enough.

5. Eliminate Wi-Fi Interference

Your TV needs a strong Wi-Fi signal to operate. Dropped Wi-Fi connections often occur because of physical interference from walls or other obstructions or because of electronic interference from phones, microwaves, baby monitors, and other devices in the same frequency range as your Wi-Fi network.

Test your Wi-Fi signal by placing your phone near your TV and connecting to the Wi-Fi network. Even if that works, though, the signal may not be strong enough or constant enough for your TV.

We’ll try a couple of alternative connection options in later steps, so you can return here if those steps end up showing you have issues with the strength of your Wi-Fi signal.

Placing your router in the same room as your TV will definitely solve the problem, but it’s not always possible. Here are a few alternative options for dealing with Wi-Fi interference:

• Move your router  to an open, central location.
• Buy a better router.  This is definitely a good idea if you’re using a mediocre router from your internet provider. I suggest the  TP-Link AX6600  if you plan to have a lot of smart home devices. The  TP-Link AX1800  is an excellent budget alternative.
• Switch to a mesh Wi-Fi system . These systems are great ways to get strong Wi-Fi throughout even the largest homes. My recommended system is the  Google Nest Mesh Wi-Fi System .
• Use a Wi-Fi extender.  If your current network works for all but one area of your home, a Wi-Fi extender can boost the signal in that specific area. The  TP-Link AX1500  is a solid option.

6. Disconnect USB Devices from Your TV

Some LG TVs have issues with USB devices interfering with Wi-Fi connections. If you have anything connected to your TV’s USB port, go ahead and disconnect it.

See if the Wi-Fi connection works without your USB devices attached. Unfortunately, there is no long-term fix for this problem as far as I’m aware. You may just need to leave that USB device (or potentially all USB devices) disconnected from your TV.

7. Fix Your TV’s Time Zone and Date

Your TV’s time and date settings need to be in sync with those of your router, and it needs to be set to the same time zone.

The reason for this is somewhat technical, but the short version is that your router puts a time limit on the addresses it assigns to each device in your network. If your TV’s time is set wrong, it may inadvertently be telling your router that the connection should have already expired.

• Select Time and Date.
• Make sure the date and time are set correctly based on your time zone.

Now go ahead and connect again. Your router will immediately see the new timezone information, so there’s no need to restart any devices for this test.

8. Test Your Connection With a Hotspot

A mobile hotspot isn’t a good long-term solution for your TV, especially if you stream in HD or 4K. However, it can help us to determine whether the problem is with your TV or your network. It will also let us download some updates in a later step.

• Make sure cellular data is turned on on your phone (ignore this if you’re using a hotspot router).
• On iPhone, go to Settings -> Personal Hotspot and toggle Allow Others to Join. While on the Personal Hotspot screen, make a note of your hotspot network name and password.
• On Android, you can activate the hotspot by swiping down on the screen to open the quick settings drawer. To get the network name and password, though, you’ll need to go to Settings -> Hotspot & Tethering -> Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Open the Network tab.
• Select your hotspot network by name and enter the password.

Stay connected to the hotspot network for now if the connection works. If your TV won’t connect to your hotspot , you can try to debug that connection, but it’s probably easier to just proceed with the next fix.

9. Try Connecting With an Ethernet Cable

Wi-Fi isn’t the only way to connect your TV to your router. Hardline connections using an ethernet cable are faster and more stable than Wi-Fi connections.

However, an ethernet connection is only practical if your router is close to your TV. You can buy cables as long as 100 feet, but they get to be expensive and unruly at that length.

If possible, connect your TV to your router directly via an ethernet cable. You may need to temporarily move your router or TV to make this work. You could also use a powerline adapter to establish an ethernet connection through your home’s electrical wires.

Hopefully, the ethernet connection works at least long enough for the next step. If it’s a convenient enough solution, you could even leave it connected long-term instead of relying on Wi-Fi.

10. Update Your LG TV Firmware

Firmware updates often contain fixes for network problems and other LG TV issues. Usually, I’d have suggested updates as the first fix, but installing firmware updates requires an internet connection. Since your TV’s Wi-Fi isn’t working, you probably see the dilemma we’re in.

If either of the above two fixes worked, you should be connected to a hotspot or ethernet connection. You can use that new connection to download your updates according to the following steps.

• Select About this TV.
• Click Check for updates.
• Once the update is installed, power cycle your TV following the instructions above.

Now let’s talk about what to do if you can’t connect to ethernet or a hotspot.

You can download your LG TV’s latest firmware manually and install it using a USB drive. LG has lengthy instructions for that process, so I won’t repeat them here. This manual install is more involved, so definitely try the above steps first if you can.

With the latest firmware installed, go ahead and try your Wi-FI connection again.

11. Contact LG Support

We’re tried all of the steps that we can do on our own. You’ll likely need to file a service request with LG for further help.

Make sure you have your warranty and purchase information handy. Even if you’re not under warranty, Wi-Fi issues are often software issues or defects rather than hardware problems. That makes repairs a lot cheaper or potentially even free.

What’s Next?

These fixes should help you deal with most LG TV Wi-Fi connection problems. If nothing else works, though, this probably isn’t a big enough reason to get a new smart TV.

Instead, consider adding a Fire TV Stick or Roku Stick to replace your TV’s missing internet features. You could even get both Roku and Firestick so that you have access to the apps from both services and have an extra streaming stick for travel. Any of these solutions is cheaper than replacing a TV that still has a working display.

5 mistakes everyone makes with LG OLED TVs, and how to fix them

Get the best possible picture quality with a few small tweaks

Thanks to their irresistible combination of futuristic, super-slim designs and consistently outstanding picture quality, LG OLED TVs have become the darlings of the high-end TV world – they're not only among the best OLED TVs , but the best TVs of any kind. 

We’re not just talking about movie fans here, either; in recent times LG OLED TVs have also been heralded as the best gaming TVs , thanks to their ability to deliver all the very latest gaming features available from the Xbox Series X, PS5 and latest premium PC graphics cards.

As with all high-end TVs these days, though, the impressive and wide-ranging capabilities of LG’s OLED TVs make them fairly complex beasts that can be tricky to get the best out of. Especially when research suggests that the vast majority of TV owners scarcely touch their TV settings once they’ve gone through the initial installation routines. 

The problem is that few TVs are set up to deliver their best possible viewing experience out of the box, so if you haven't picked the right settings, you're not getting the most from your TV.

So let’s look here at some of the most common set up mistakes LG OLED owners make that may be stopping them from getting the viewing experience they deserve.

1. Not changing picture mode for different viewing conditions

We’ve never had it so good when it comes to both the range of sources our TVs have access to, and the variety of content available across all those sources. While this is great new in most ways, though, it does expose the fact that for all the cleverness of the latest video processing systems you get with LG’s latest OLED TVs, optimising an LG OLED’s performance means taking the time to choose appropriate picture presets for different types of content. 

Usefully, LG tries to help with this by creating different presets with names that reflect both the content they’re best suited to, and the current environment the TV is being watched in.

For regular daytime TV viewing, together with sports, the Standard preset that LG’s TVs default to is generally the best option. If you want to watch a film or high-quality streamed TV show, though,  you should definitely make the effort to switch to the most appropriate film-based preset. 

LG provides three options here: Cinema Home, Cinema and Filmmaker Mode. The first of these is a good option for watching a film in a fairly bright room, as it tracks closer to movie industry video standards than the Standard mode, but pushes colour and luminance up a little to combat ambient light in the room you're in.

Cinema is the preset LG has established to deliver a seriously accurate-looking image in a dark room, emulating what you would have seen if you were looking at the image as it was created in a mastering studio. Ideal for evening viewing when you've got the lights dimmed and the curtains shut.

Filmmaker Mode looks pretty similar to Cinema, but is designed by the independent UHD Alliance to recreate the conditions the filmmakers the Alliance represents use when creating their footage. Personally we’d lean towards LG’s Cinema Home or Cinema modes over Filmmaker Mode, as they take into account a bit more the specific capabilities of each LG OLED screen – the picture is a little more optimised.

We should add to this section that we’d advise against using LG’s Vivid preset for really any viewing, as it pushes colour, contrast and brightness to such extremes that the picture can become distractingly unnatural.

It’s also worth reminding gamers to ensure that their TV has switched into its Game mode when gaming if you want to take advantage of the fantastically low response times LG OLEDs are capable of. This should happen automatically, but it's easy to double check on newer LG TVs especially, using the Game Optimizer menu.

2. Sticking with default motion settings

The way different TVs handle motion, and the quality of their motion processing, can have a big impact on the viewing experience. Yet it’s one of the most widely ignored or misunderstood aspects of TV set up.

Many AV fans (and Hollywood luminaries) would argue all motion processing on LG’s TVs – or any TVs, come to that – should simply be turned off by default. At least when watching 24p films. Otherwise, the argument goes, you are no longer getting the natural 24 frames a second judder effect associated with a cinema experience, and instead you’re making films look like cheap soap operas.

Personally, though, while motion processing can indeed have a pretty unpleasant effect on picture quality in lots of ways, we’d argue there are motion processing options available on LG TVs that can help rather than hinder picture quality. 

The relatively new Cinematic Motion mode of LG’s TruMotion processing, for instance, can be quite astute about taking away the roughest effects of TV (rather than cinema) judder without over-smoothing the picture or throwing up too many unwanted digital artefacts. 

Another option worth experimenting with if you find yourself finding judder jarring after turning motion processing off is to choose Custom in the TruMotion menus, and set the Blur and judder reduction elements to a setting of three or four each. This again typically reduces (without removing) the effect of judder, without causing anything to look too artificial.

3. Leaving eco mode settings on

Pretty much all TVs now ship with so-called Eco settings. In fact, most TVs ship with Eco modes switched on by default. This is usually so that they can comply with the stringent power consumption rules set by electronics bodies around the world. 

Unfortunately, though, while the cost savings these modes bring are actually fairly small, they can have a big impact on picture quality. Typically they make the picture look much less bright than it would with Eco modes turned off – even when a TV has a built in camera it can use to modify pictures somewhat to the amount of light in the room.

In fact, the darkness of pictures in Eco mode can be particularly damaging when it comes to the impact you should see with HDR content if you’re watching TV with a light sensor in a dark room. 

All of which is a long way of saying that one of the first things an AV enthusiast should do when they get an LG TV is make sure all Eco features are turned off, so you're the one controlling how the image looks.

4. Not optimizing game settings

LG TVs are fantastic gaming displays capable of handling literally anything any current gaming devices can throw at them. There are a couple of settings, though, that gamers might not be aware of that can make a palpable difference to the gaming experience. Note that we’re assuming here that you’ve already made sure your TV is running in Game mode with Game sources, ideally with Auto Low Latency Mode and variable refresh rate modes set to ‘on’.

The first ‘hidden’ gaming trick to look out for is RGB mode. Setting the TV to accept RGB over the HDMI input your gaming devices are connecting to can deliver richer, purer colours with gaming sources. This feature can be activated by switching the HDMI you have your console or PC connected to into ‘PC Mode’ in LG OLED TV’s Home Dashboard menu. You will also need to set your console or PC to output RGB.

The other key but often missed gaming graphics setting is HGiG. Short for HDR Gaming Interest Group, this mode available in LG’s HDR menu options is designed to be used with game devices such as the Xbox Series X and PS5 that carry their own console level (rather than merely in-game) HDR setup systems. Basically, choosing the HGiG mode turns off the TV’s built in dynamic HDR processing features, which are designed to continually adjust HDR images to optimise their impact, so that the TV essentially hands over HDR optimisation duties to the console or PC that you’ve already set up to deliver their best HDR output. 

5. Using Dolby Atmos sound mode with built-in speakers

LG OLED TVs have a long and proud tradition of carrying built-in decoding of the awesome Dolby Atmos audio format. Unfortunately, though, for a few generations now the Dolby Atmos sound mode LG OLEDs default to hasn’t actually delivered the best audio results when using the TVs' built-in speakers.

For some reason (though things have been improved for LG’s new 2022 models), the Dolby Atmos mode on LG OLED TVs tends to sound rather swallowed and short of impact, even falling away in power terms when big Dolby Atmos moments reach a crescendo, rather than continuing to expand as they should.

A significantly better option, even when playing Dolby Atmos soundtracks, is LG’s AI Sound setting. This essentially reworks the sound to take full advantage of the known capabilities of each TV’s speaker set up, and typically results in a much more powerful, dynamic and impactful sound than the native Dolby Atmos mode can produce. 

The AI Sound system can get a touch too aggressive at times, it should be said. For most of the time, though, it delivers a much more all-round satisfying experience.

Why Does My LG TV Keep Blinking Or Flickering? 9 Fixes To Try!

No one wants to replace a broken TV if it can be fixed, especially an LG TV that most likely costs a lot more than it probably should.

If your LG TV is flickering and blinking, there may be a problem with your video source, TV settings, or hardware. There are many fixes to try to see what is causing your LG TV to blink or flicker.

Keep in mind that your LG Menus listed below might be slightly different based on which OS your TV uses.

1. Check your Video Source

If you’re streaming content on your LG TV, consider trying to stream the same video or program from your phone, laptop, or tablet. This is how we will check to see if its an actual TV problem or an issue with a streaming service.

If you notice the problem on an alternate device, it points to the issue being the content, not your LG Smart TV. If the problem indicates the TV, try the following suggestions below.

If you notice the sound and no picture on your LG Smart TV, we have a few other fixes for you to try.

2. Turn the LG TV Off and On

If you observe your LG TV blinking or flickering, the easiest thing to do is to turn the TV off and on again. You can do this using the power button on your remote or the button on your TV,

Powering your TV down for a full 60 seconds will soft reset it, and potentially fix flickering issue. Alternatively, we can press and hold the power button on the TV for a full 10-15 seconds to power cycle the TV. The TV should turn itself off, then back on, indicating it has reset.

Still having issues, let’s move on to the next thing to check.

3. Check the Power Source and Cables

Another relatively simple step to eliminate a flickering screen is to unplug the TV and plug it back in again. You should also turn the TV off before you unplug it from the wall.

If possible, you can also check the cord’s connection to the back of your TV to ensure that the cord fits tightly into the device. Also, make sure the power cord isn’t damaged in any way.

Once you have plugged the TV back in, power the TV on again using the remote to see if the problem has been resolved. If you are using a surge protector, make sure it securely plugged into the wall, and the TV power cord is securely plugged into it.

You can also try turning off other devices in the room, as flickering and blinking can be caused by electrical interference from other devices. Try turning them off to see if it helps!

4. Check Streaming Device Connections

If you’re using an external device like a Roku, Fire Stick, or Apple TV to stream content and notice flickering or blinking, make sure all connections are secure.

The connections will be on both the device and the TV, and you should check both sources. If you find a problem, you can purchase a replacement device or cord to fix the problem.

5. Perform a Hard Reset of your TV

A hard reset is a total reboot of your TV. However, it won’t change your presets or settings.

To hard reset your LG Smart TV, unplug the device from the wall and hold the power button for ten seconds. 

Keep the device unplugged, and do not reconnect for at least an hour. Once an hour has passed, plug in your TV and power it up again. 

6. Check your Internet Connection

If you are streaming content over the internet when you notice flickering or blinking on your LG Smart TV, reboot your router to rule out a problem with the internet.

Instead, practically all your smart TV problems can be solved with an external streaming device, such as a Roku player, Fire TV Stick, or Apple TV streaming box. Plug one of these devices into your existing TV, and you’ll get a much better smart TV experience without tossing your current set.

This might be an obvious point for the tech-savvier among us, but I’ve heard from lots of folks over the years who’ve assumed they need to replace a perfectly good TV because of slow software, outdated apps, or weak Wi-Fi connectivity. While the TV makers might prefer that you buy an entirely new TV to fix these issues, I assure you there’s a better way.

What to buy instead of a new TV

I even tried the headphones on a Panasonic tv in a different room and the sound share screen appeared on the LG tv ??? both tvs connected to the internet.

I bought my LG 32″ HD Smart webOS TV Jan.29, 2022. It constantly interrupts my viewing with a screen that reads “channel no longer available, please return to previous channel”. After doing this, my previous channel returns. Today, 10/05, I am unable to view certain channels, which gives me a black screen on several channels, and limited access to channels I viewed the day before. I remain dissatisfied with this TV and seriously considering sending it to the junk yard and buy a different brand model. The date to return this junk is past due.

my L G is a 2016 model49uh6100. The tv has a blue tint that I cannot g, I have tried many adjustments to get rid of the tint, even white objects on the screen appear to have a blue tint. Is there a easy to get rid of this problem.

A manufacturing fault in the blue LED backlight may be the origin of the blue tint on your TV’s screen. You will need to change your backlight in this situation. The last and most frequent reason for the blue tint—or any tint—is an issue with the image or display settings.

Our LG tv kept going off and coming on all by itself. I contacted customer service three different times and they were unable to resolve the problem. They asked me to take a picture of the tv and remote and send via messages and they would send a receipt for a replacement. Never heard anything back. Will NOT be buying another LG tv!

Your TV probably uses power-saving features like idle TV standby, on timers, and sleep timers if it goes on or off at regular intervals, such every 30 to 60 minutes. Check the Bravia Sync settings if the TV goes on or off whenever an HDMI-connected device is switched on or off.

Mine turns off and on by itself too. We were told to turn off tv and unplug connection. Hold in the turn on button for the TV for 2 minutes wait one minute plug back in and wait till process is back. Then turn tv back on. We have done this but now it still keeps turning off and on. what else can we do?

My LG television which I purchased less than a month ago no longer has any color. It only has a black and white picture which isn’t acceptable.

Please Advise

I have no color on my television. Black and white only, We have unplugged, reset fire stick. Most everything we can think of. It is still black and white. I did use the sleep timer last night. I have used it before with no problems.

Please advise.
