Brita will donate to a school or charity of your choice when you recycle your old water filter system — here's how to try it

If you use a Brita water filter, you already know that you're getting all the benefits of the purest bottled brands from simple tap water. But when your filter reaches the end of its life, you might be tempted to throw it out, adding to the tons of plastic trash clogging landfills across the nation. However, Brita's free recycling program offers an alternative for filters, pitchers, and faucet systems — and it's been a major hit so far.

What's happening?

Brita has partnered with recycling platform TerraCycle to accept a wide range of Brita products for recycling .

The program is simple: First, create a TerraCycle account and start saving your used Brita filters or pitchers in any box you might have lying around the house. When you're ready to send them in, download and print a free, prepaid shipping label. Attach the label to your box and send it to TerraCycle to recycle.

This is when you can start earning TerraCycle points , which can be redeemed as donations to the U.S. school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. TerraCycle reports that it's raised millions of dollars globally through recycling programs like Brita's.

Once TerraCycle receives your items, they'll be divided by material. The plastic will be shredded and reused to make recycled plastic products like park benches and bike racks, and the carbon filters will go into carbon polymers, which are often used for strong but lightweight products like parts for cars and planes.

Unfortunately — or maybe fortunately — the program has been such a success so far that users currently need to join a waitlist to send in their items.

Watch now: Scientist responds to claim that volcanoes are responsible for planet's overheating

"We need to take a few months off and apologize for any inconvenience," a Brita spokesperson told The Cool Down. "Everyone in the program has done such a great job recycling that we've currently reached our maximum contribution."

The good news is, the program will be back up and running soon.

Why is Brita's free recycling program important?

This program has one huge benefit for participants and two huge benefits for the environment.

1️⃣ It takes an awkward piece of potential trash off your hands for free, saving you space in your garbage bin.

2️⃣ Recycling plastic responsibly instead of throwing it away is always a win for the environment. It helps prevent that plastic item from taking centuries to decompose in a landfill, and it ensures no toxic microplastics leak into the environment.

3️⃣ TerraCycle points can be redeemed for a donation to your favorite cause. As we mentioned above, that includes schools and a wide range of charities, and it also includes environmental nonprofits. It's up to you where your dollars go.

What is Brita's overall sustainability plan?

Brita filters are already helping the environment by providing a simple and clean alternative to bottled water. Cutting all that single-use plastic out of your life can make a huge difference in protecting the planet, while also saving you as much as $200 or more every year.

On top of that, Brita reports that in 2019 its customers filtered enough water to replace 12 billion single-use plastic water bottles — a massive impact.

Bottom line: Brita's free recycling program makes water filters an even better choice for the environment.

Moscow could get recycling program

qualified recycling program business plan

The village of Moscow could soon get a communal recycling container.

Paul Braasch, director of Clermont County’s Office of Environmental Quality, presented the recycling program to the village of Moscow council on September 3.

Braasch offered to have a front loading, multi-material recycling container installed in downtown Moscow. The bin and collection service would be free to residents and the village.

Clermont County’s Office of Environmental Quality owns and operates 38 bins throughout the county.

“This is part of an ongoing program we’ve had for years, providing local recycling to residents,” Braasch explained. “With the loss of the New Richmond bins, we have an opportunity to put a container in Moscow because Washington and Moscow are underserved.”

On May 12, the New Richmond Village Council voted to remove the village’s communal recycling containers due to illegal dumping.

Neither Washington Township nor the village of Moscow has curbside recycling available.

“This could be a nice service for people looking to lay down roots in the community,” said David Plummer, administrator for the village of Moscow.

The council expressed concerns about possible illegal dumping.

They also discussed potential locations for the bin, including behind the Moscow Village Hall, located at 30 Wells St., or near Washington Township Fire and Rescue Station 67, located at 2817 Mill St.

“I want to settle on a location before we approve the bin,” said Councilman Rick Beasley.

The council approved talking to the fire department before making a final decision.

“I’m hoping to hear back from the village. I’m assuming they will approve the container since it will be an option to provide residents a service at no cost to them,” Braasch said.

Cheryl Richards, a 15-year resident of Moscow, hopes the council approves the recycling bin.

She said her family generates far more recyclable waste than non-recyclable waste, and she used to drop off her recyclables at the bins in New Richmond before they were removed.

“What I heard today is that they don’t want to do it,” said Richards. “But, I hope they do approve the bins.”

The council is anticipated to make a final decision about the recycling bin during its next meeting on October 1.

Contec S.A.: The undiscussed step in tire pyrolysis (ELT preparation)

October 14, 2024

For too long, end-of-life tires (ELTs) have been treated as trash and discarded. ELTs make up nearly 2% of the total global waste, and an estimated one billion ELTs are discarded yearly. This waste flow is growing dramatically year after year. But businesses follow circular economy principles, they begin to view this trash as an opportunity. Through chemical pyrolysis, ELTs can be broken down into reusable commodities like recovered Carbon Black, recovered Pyrolysis Oil, and recovered Steel.

Ms finance menu, undergraduate 3+1 finance scholars.

Qualified incoming freshmen interested in finance can choose to enroll as 3+1 Finance Scholars, an accelerated program which allows students to complete both their bachelor's degree and the master of science in finance (MSF) degree in four years.

Through an evaluation of college-ready credits—for example, advance placement (AP) and international baccalaureate (IB)—these high-achieving students are fast-tracked for admission to the Lundquist College of Business one full year before their contemporaries. Students in this program can complete their undergraduate degree in three years, with the fourth year used to complete the MSF.

The 3+1 Advantage

By fast-tracking students through the undergraduate curriculum and allowing them to use the fourth year to pursue a master's degree, the 3+1 Finance Scholar program maximizes the value to students' careers while they are in college. It's a win-win. The MSF program emphasizes valuation and asset management and is ideal for those targeting a coveted career as a financial analyst—whether at a "sell-side" investment firm evaluating specific sectors or industries, a "buy-side" investment house managing its own funds, an investment bank, or a corporate finance department. Plus, the MSF is STEM certified and a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute recognized program. The curriculum is designed to provide students with insights from state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical research in finance while actively engaging in quarterly professional development seminars.

International students: Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) certification currently makes graduates of the MSF program eligible to work in the United States for up to 36 months after graduation (instead of the standard 12-month optional practical training period).

Curriculum and Academic Plans

Several 3+1 curriculum plans are available for students completing the business administration or accounting major in three years. Each respective plan assumes that students enter the University of Oregon with 30-45 credits earned from AP, IB, or pre-college programs. Students interested in becoming 3+1 Finance Scholars should work closely with an advisor to create an academic plan.
