A thank you letter to my academic advisor, here is your well-deserved thank you..
In my previous experiences with academic advisors, I haven't had the best luck. Not once have I had an academic advisor that genuinely cared about me or that believed in me. Once I got to college that all changed. I'm not sure words can explain how grateful I am to finally have an academic advisor that is incredibly dedicated and supportive, but I'm going to give it a shot.
First off, thank you for being my academic advisor. I was not assigned to you. I reached out to you because I heard absolutely wonderful things about you in hopes of you becoming my academic advisor. You could have easily said no because saying yes meant adding another thing to your very busy schedule. But, you said yes and I'm forever grateful. Without you, I would not be able to handle everything that college and life throws at me. Having you backing me up 100% allows me to be at peace, at least a little bit.
Thank you for believing in me and supporting. Many advisors aren't too hopeful or supportive, especially when it comes to students who plan on graduating early. But with you, I feel like anything is possible. You have faith in me and will do anything to help me set and reach all of my goals including graduating early. Whether it is you helping me map out my next few years in college, approving course overload or simply helping me sign up for fall, spring and summer courses, I can always count on you.
Thank you for being just as enthusiastic as I am, which for those who know me is difficult. I always look forward to coming into your office. As soon as I see your smiling face I know I'm going to leave happier than I came in. Along with our similar attitudes, you and I can geek out over the little things like planners on Amazon and studying abroad in beautiful countries. You're much more than an advisor and our meetings never feel like meetings. Our meetings feel like two friends sharing things such as advice and/or stories.
Thank you for seeing me as my strengths and not my weaknesses. Also, thank you for pointing out strengths I didn't even know I had. Each time we meet you boost my confidence so much and in college, that is something I really need and appreciate. You know what they say about confidence: it's key, so thank you for unlocking opportunities for me through compliments like "you're awesome" or even just letting me know you enjoy advising me.
Lastly, thank you for being a wonderful person!
This one is for you, Dr. Cash. Thank you!
Your super appreciative advisee

Disney magic for new year, the "happiest place on earth" has a lot of characters with some pretty great advice..
Disney movies are well known and very popular in today's world. Although many people appreciate the plot and the storyline, not many people appreciate the wisdom these characters possess. Every Disney movie has unique advice that can be applied to everyday life. Here are 11 Disney quotes to help start your New Year off right:
Remember you’re the one who can fill the world with sunshine. — Snow White
Little Golden Book Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
— Snow White, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
The world has turned into a very dark place. Bad things overshadow the good and it’s hard to find something that isn’t negative. Try and be the one positive thing in a world full of negativity. It isn’t always the easiest thing, but it’s worth it.
The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it. — Rafiki
— Rafiki, "The Lion King".
Everyone has things in their past that they want to forget. Dwelling on the past only holds you back. To start the new year right, it’s best to move forward and forget it. Make new memories and experiences, and make them great. Soon 2018 will be the past, and you want to make it good.
You don't have time to be timid. You must be bold and daring. — Lumière

If watching is all you're gonna do, then you're gonna watch your life go by without ya. — Laverne
— Laverne, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
You can’t just sit back and watch your life go by. Most people are content going with the flow of society. Be different. Be hardworking. Take risks. Live your life by doing, not by watching.

— Pooh, "Winnie the Pooh"
So many people today are so concerned with their problems. Half of the time they don’t even solve them, they just complain. It’s about the experience you have, good or bad. Good experiences create good memories, and bad experiences make good life lessons . So focus on the experience, not the problem.
Let it go. — Elsa
— Elsa, "Frozen"
Best. Line. Ever. Don’t get caught up in your struggles or stressed out by life. Let everything go. Move on, and live life.
If you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all. — Thumper
— Thumper, "Bambi"
As I said before, there are many bad things happening in the world today. That’s because there’s a lot of bad people, but there’s also a lot of good people. Be a good person. Say nice things. Add to the good, not to the bad.
Today's special moments are tomorrow's memories. — Genie
— Genie, "The Return of Jafar"
Cherish each moment . Most things you experience only happen once in our lives, so you need to appreciate them. Take pictures. Get off social media. Life your life and make memories with people who care about you.
40 Gift Ideas for the Indecisive
It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. but also a time of stressing over the perfect gift..
It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer . Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.
Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family , memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care ."
Sometimes, I even get the answer of, "Anything." I can bet that a lot of you go through the same thing, or even have family members to whom you give this answer. Take some notes and send this to your favorite aunt and uncle...
Here is a list of gifts for the people (anyone & everyone) who just don't know what they want:
Of course, the easiest thing to do when unsure what to get someone is to slip a $20 into a card and call it a day. To make this a little more personal, you can give it in a beautiful money envelope or a brainteaser box . Pinterest also has cute ways you can give the money.
Who doesn't love a good pair of fuzzy socks? A good pair of cute or comical socks can be found anywhere. There are even online stores specifically for this.
Weighted blankets , heated blankets , comforters , or even those five dollar fuzzy blankets at Wal-Mart will do.
Possibly one of the best things to get are gift cards . They're easy for you to buy, and the person getting it can spend it at their leisure. Buy them a few $10 gift cards for their favorite places, or one Visa gift card they can spend anywhere.
Hoodies and Sweatpants
I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE hoodies. I have enough to fill a second closet, and I wear them all year round. If I've been around you and a hoodie of yours has gone missing, it was most likely me. What better to get someone than an oversize sweatshirt and matching sweatpants ?
If you know someone that does a lot of ' Netflix & Chill Napping ', this is the perfect gift for them. The best are the cozy pants that feel like clouds.
Candles are something that can be bought for anyone. Even some guys out there will pick out a great-smelling candle. They're cheap and there's so . many . to . choose . from .
Hear me out. A small beta fish in a little vase is the perfect gift for someone. If it's for a kid, be sure to run it by their parents first. I had no idea what to get my brother last year, so I brought him home a beautiful beta. He loved it, and still has it today!
I know almost everyone has Spotify, Apple Music, and more. However, a great CD (even a home-made playlist) is always awesome to have in the car.
Movie Tickets
A movie is a great idea for someone if you know their favorite genre. If you don't, just buy some pre-paid movie tickets or a gift card to the local theater! These are always good because you can use them whenever you want.
Grab a basket and fill it with the person's favorite candy. If you don't know what kind to get, you can get an assortment to cover all your bases -- or try getting the small individual candies that are 10 for $1!
It's always fun to take an idea and completely switch it up. You could get the cheap prank gifts at any store - Five Below has so many - or you could take it one step further. This gift is perfect for people who want 'nothing' for Christmas , or you can pick from a variety of other hilarious ones .
Dollar Shave Club
Do you know a man that just can't find the right razor? Look no further, Dollar Shave Club is here. Have razors and shaving accessories sent to the person's door for a low price. This idea is so cool, and they even have a line for women.
A Stocking of Toys
Shopping for kids no longer has to break your bank. Simply buy a cute stocking for cheap, and fill it with small toys, trinkets, and even candy.
What girl doesn't love cool pens , stickers , and notebooks ? They can use it to write letters or use it for note-taking or journaling. Either way, it's a sweet and practical gift.
Picture Frames
I can honestly admit that 99% of the time if I don't know what to get someone dear to my heart , I wind up getting them a picture frame. There are so many things you can do with picture frames. Designing your own or buying a pre-made one are both great ways to go. Plus, it costs less than a dollar to print a picture.
Sports Accessories
If you know someone that plays sports , what better than to get them things that go with what they do? Water bottles , mouth guards , anything that they can use would be a great gift. If you aren't sure what they could use, get them a gift card to their local sports store.
Bath Accessories
I love a good bath as much as the next person. How about buying that person a few bath or shower accessories? Bath salts , bath bombs , and fresh smelling shower gel will all do the trick.
Portable Phone Charger
Honestly, just fill my stocking with a bunch of these . These are so useful for literally EVERYTHING. Concerts, sporting events, vacations, and more. The person receiving this gift will thank you now, and most certainly later.
Men, women, adults, and children all wear hats. It's perfect as it gets colder outside. Go with a nice beanie or the classic Dad hat . Either way, it'll make for an awesome gift.
Winter is coming, and I definitely want to stay in my pajamas all day. Slippers are perfect for the people that just want to stay cozy all day.
I honestly see everyone and their grandmothers collecting these. From children to adults, everyone can use a little extra Pop on their shelves.
Phone Cases and Pop-sockets
I know a bunch of stores that sell really cute phone cases for really cheap. You can even get them at farmer's markets! What better to go with that new case than a really cool pop-socket ? There are so many designs for anyone.
Precious Moments
My mom LOVES these. They're really sweet collectibles for everyone to enjoy. They have a lot of themes, movies, and colors to choose from.
Subscription Boxes
This one is perfect for everyone. There are so many websites that have monthly boxes you can buy. Usually, you start off paying for one at a time, and if you want to renew it you can. They have boxes for every interest: make-up , snacks , coffee , and even gaming boxes!
If you're of age, showing up to the Christmas party with a bottle of alcohol is the way to go. There are ways to decorate even a simple wine bottle to make it festive and put a smile on someone's face.
These are time-consuming but totally worth it. You can make one online for an easier route, or home-make them for a genuine feel. They're totally cheap, too.
Concert/Show Tickets
Do you know who your friend/family's favorite performer is? Why not buy them tickets to see them ? You can even find cheap tickets to Broadway remakes of children's movies for your favorite little nugget in your life.
Memory Jars
Try being crafty with these adorable jars. I have received so many of these from my friends and my boyfriend, and they all still sit on my shelf today. I love periodically looking at them to put a smile on my face .
'Open When' Letters
Another cute and crafty idea is 'Open When' letters. These are usually aimed toward a significant other, but they can be made for anyone really. There are even kits to help you make your letters if you're not feeling very crafty.
Nail/Hair Certificates
If you have someone that enjoys pampering themselves, get them a certificate to get their nails done. For ladies, you can get a cut or dye certificate and for men, you can get one for a haircut or beard trim.
Art Supplies
This gift is for all ages. Coloring is such a stress reliever, and everyone loves it! You could get scrapbooking supplies , adult coloring books , clay and sculpting tools , markers , or fabric paint . Depending on who it is, you have so many options.
Makeup Accessories
For those beauty-loving girls - and boys - who can never have enough makeup. There are so many things that define makeup, and because it can be expensive, go with some accessories. A new eyelash curler , some moisturizer , or some new brushes will do wonderfully.
Anything from Hallmark
Hallmark is like if you took almost every gift idea ever and put it into a store. You can find funny to serious gifts that'll make for the perfect addition under the tree.
Hairbands, Clips, and Bobby-pins
No, for real. Stop laughing and head to the nearest store for these items. I cannot express how many hair ties I go through in less than a month. It's an endless cycle of buy, use, and lose. The girl you buy these for will be forever thankful.
Stuffed Animals
What child doesn't smile when greeted by a cuddly stuffed animal under the tree? Actually, deep down, who at all doesn't smile from a stuffed animal?
Everyone loves a great poster hanging on their wall. From My Little Pony to Sports Illustrated , there's a poster for everyone and anyone.
Perfume and Cologne
I know a lot of people have specific scents that they enjoy, but why not buy them something new to try? I know one of my cousins buys everyone new scents each year, and it's awesome because I get to try different kinds. I've actually found some of my favorite perfumes that way. Don't be afraid to pick one for someone else.
Car Accessories
Air fresheners , their favorite design as a steering wheel cover , or even a cute thing to hang from their mirror. It's a unique idea that'll be used on the daily.
Suppose you don't have the money for any of this. Don't beat yourself up. Make a card and simply show that person love. Give them the gift of holiday cheer and your affection. Out of all of these things, this one will put the biggest smile on their faces.
Hopefully, this list gave you some ideas for the perfect present. If not, hopefully, you're sending this list to your favorite relatives to drop hints for them. Bring on the holiday season.

Bucket List To Live In The Now
Find excitement in your life and start exploring wherever you are right here, right now..
I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.
There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
So instead of sulking in my long days and longer weeks left until spring I decided to take some action – to bring some excitement into my life – an official bucket list .
I started brainstorming things of what I want to do right here, right now. Things that are feasible and achievable, because a lot of our wants will be expensive, timely, etc. So first, I came up with a solid list of ten things I want to do in the PNW (the Pacific Northwest, where I live). I am here for less than a year but that does not make my stay anymore welcoming. It has been hard for me to adjust, so finding things I can explore and do here is definitely and already helping me get excited about living here.
Now that I am approaching the state of Washington with some enthusiasm and motivation to explore, it has made this transition not so gloomy. I started jotting down simple things like to explore the Olympic National Park (free), camp on the Pacific Beaches (no more than $20 a tent), climb Mount Rainer (free), bike the San Juan Islands, spend time in Seattle and Portland etc. These are things I can accomplish with more or less a limited budget, but things that seem really awesome to me. Yours could be to visit all the farmers markets or national parks in your area or all the music festivals… whatever you are interested in.
I then decided what are the bigger things in my life that I want to personally accomplish… for me it is to be an author, visit all fifty states etc. these are things that I am currently accomplishing so I put them in a different category. This is a way to acknowledge that I am working my way to fully achieving these goals . It helps to make you feel better about where you are because you are in the middle of working toward that goal. It could be as simple as wanting to be an awesome chef, well if you are already cooking, you are on your way to accomplishing that part of your bucket list. My advice is to first think of things within yourself, without anyone's advice or opinion. Then you can discover things you personally really want to do and once you have a solid list from yourself then go expand your list by searching places around you, taking advice from friends, etc.
I finally made a list of expensive, timely and awesome things I want to do in life. Such as, backpack South America, go on an African Safari, sky dive etc. These are the long-term goals that will take time and finances to accomplish. But keeping them on your bucket list is important because it reminds you of your wishes, desires and what will bring more excitement to your life. For example, I do not plan on doing an African Safari in this decade… but it is something I would like to accomplish in thirty years. That is awhile down the road, but having it there as a reminder of the things you are working toward is a fulfilling feeling.
I decided since I have several months left to explore I need to take advantage. For these reasons precisely: I know I am never moving back to the PNW so I mine as well take the only opportunity I have to explore the most of this area so when I look back I can say, “Yes I lived there and I did this, this, and that." So when the time comes that I pack up my stuff for my next chapter I will know this past chapter of life in the PNW was properly written and an exciting chapter for anyone to read.
Because I have these several months I decided to make sure I do at least two exciting things per month until my departure date. This month I camped in the Olympic National Park and I snowboarded at Crystal Mountain. These are two things on my now bucket list.
For you, start jotting down simple things you want to do in your area that you have yet to adventure to. Make a timeline for yourself, to do one thing on that now bucket list once a month, or like me twice a month. Whatever works for you, start living outside your bubble. Trust me, it will make the days at work a little brighter knowing you are fulfilling your desires and growing your horizons.
I went to Michael’s and I bought a board I could hang up on the wall (any type will do, wood/plastic/paperback etc.). Then I bought super glue, clips, colored paper and stickers. You can do it anyway you want – for me, I cut up the pieces of paper and wrote my list on them. I color coordinated them:
Vibrant blue is the now… what I will accomplish before I move from the PNW
Light blue is things I am currently working at achieving, (I.e. visiting the 50 states, I am over half way there)
Dark blue is long-term activities
It was super easy and I think it looks nice. While it gave me something to do while it was raining outside it also puts a smile on my face every time I walk by it.
If you want to go even farther to acknowledge your achievements as you cross things off your bucket list you should create another board listing all the things you have done. I made another board so once I accomplish that goal I move it over to my "Accomplishments" board to remind myself that I am living in the now and doing what I can to make my dreams come true.
It is a great reminder because although we have to go to class or sit at a desk all day, life is still good. Life is good because we are working toward our goals. Do not let your work be stressful or tedious but fill it with passion knowing this work is bringing you closer toward accomplishing your life's desires.
When thinking about your bucket list, it is important to take action. A coworker the other day was saying, “there are people that can and people that do.” And I looked at her for an extra second to digest that. So true. We can all achieve our bucket list and goals but we have to do or else we will get nowhere. So the first step is doing, making this bucket list board or jotting stuff down on piece of paper and hanging it on your refrigerator. Inspire your roommates, inspire yourself and go explore all you can while you are here, right now.
11 Ways To Survive Finals As Told By Leslie Knope
Because you know you're going to be stressed out, and leslie knows exactly how to survive..
So finals are on their way. That's right everybody, finals are about to start.
But hey, don't panic. Start getting your affairs in order and prepare for a week of hell. Here's a few things Leslie Knope wants you to do to make your finals week just a little bit less stressful:
1. Make a study schedule
Yes, it's true. You will have people tell you a thousand times to organize and plan out your day to study. This schedule will make the amount of studying seem more manageable because you have a plan.
2. Eat breakfast
It's simple: start your day off right so that you have enough energy to get through all that studying.
3. Find a good place to study
Figure out where you can study properly. Study in a place where you know you can be productive and will not be disturbed.
4. Make time for breaks
Take some time to relax. You will get so much more done after a little relaxation.
5. Recognize that you may feel overwhelmed at times
It's okay to feel overwhelmed by all the work.
6. Let your frustrations out
Don't bottle all your stress up. You will feel so much better after letting it all out.
7. Don't be afraid to admit you don't understand something
If everyone else seems to understand a concept that you are struggling with, do not pretend to understand it because that won't help you.
8. Work with your friends for support
Even if you are not studying for the same exams, it helps to have someone to study with. Study with your friends so that you can support each other.
9. Feel fierce as you prepare for that final
You will feel stressed, but if you feel like you look good, you will feel more confident. Capitalize on that confidence, and know that you are going to rock your finals.
10. Get some rest
You may not be used to sleeping enough, but you need to be awake enough to take the exam. Get a good night's sleep so that once the exam starts, you can remember everything you studied.
11. Stay positive
Just know that you worked hard to study for your exams, and you will do well. Be confident in your abilities because Leslie Knope believes in you and so should you.
Good luck on finals!
10 Signs You Go To Kent State
You know you're a true kent stater when....
If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.
1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.
The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.
2. You get a smoothie every time you go to the rec center
Kent has an awesome recreational center, but what’s even better are the smoothies and juices you reward yourself with after your workout. I mean, did you really go to the gym if you didn't get a smoothie?
3. You're still not not sure what a Golden Flash is.
We cheer for the ‘Golden Flashes’ at every football , basketball, and baseball game and more. But honestly, most of us are still not completely sure what the Golden Flash is, even if it's been explained to us a thousand times.
4. You’ve witnessed or participated in some form of protest
Kent has seen its fair share of protests and you’d be lying if you said you haven't passed by a large group of protesters, or picked up a sign yourself and joined in yourself.
5. You’ve skipped class because it was too cold to go outside
To say Kent's winter is miserable is an understatement, and when classes aren’t called off when the weather is down to -12 degrees, you call them off for yourself.
6. Your meal plan is a joke
You're either almost out of meal plan money by midterms, or you have hundreds of dollars left by the end of the semester. There's no in between, but hey, now you have an excuse to eat out.
7. You avoid the library at all costs
Sure, you go for your finals and midterms, and maybe on Sundays if you get behind in your homework, but most nights, you stay as far away from the library as possible.
8. You've gone sledding on a dining hall tray
The campus is perfect for sledding, but there is not point in spending money on a sled when you can just walk out of Eastway with a lunch tray.
9. You've spent too much time waiting on your food at Rosie's
Rosie's is the only eating place that stays up as late as you do, but unfortunately, everyone on campus is aware of this, so that grilled cheese you ordered? Yeah, its going to take a while, but it's so worth it.
10. You absolutely love your school
Even if the weather is terrible, your classes are too hard, and you have to wait forever to get your late Saturday night snack, you have to love this place. The people are awesome, the teachers are great, and the experiences here are unlike any other school's. No place can beat this college in this little town. Go Flashes!

Writing acknowledgements for your thesis is an opportunity to express gratitude to those who have supported your academic journey.
This section, often overlooked, is where you can personally thank everyone from advisors and peers to family members who’ve provided both professional and emotional support.
This article provides structured examples and essential tips to help you craft meaningful acknowledgements, ensuring you appropriately recognise the contributions of all who aided your research and writing process.
How To Write Thesis Acknowledgements
What is an acknowledgement.
What is a thesis acknowledgement, and why do people write them?
The acknowledgement section of your thesis or dissertation is an integral part of academic tradition. Here, you have the unique opportunity to thank those who have significantly contributed to your research project.
This section typically appears right after the abstract and before the table of contents in your thesis , placing it prominently at the beginning of your document.
In a thesis acknowledgement , you extend your sincere thanks to everyone who played an important role in your academic journey. These could include you:
- Family members
- Funders, or
- Supervisor.
Writing this section allows you to reflect on the collaborative nature of academic work and ensures that everyone who contributed feels appreciated.
Whether it’s the direct help from your research team or the moral support from loved ones, acknowledging these contributions shows your gratitude and recognises their importance in your successful completion of the thesis.
How To Write Acknowledgement Section For Thesis Or Dissertation?
Writing the acknowledgement section in your thesis or dissertation can feel like a breath of fresh air after the rigorous academic writing you’ve been steeped in.
Here’s a step-by-step approach that ensures you acknowledge all who contributed.
Step One: Start with Professional Acknowledgements
Your first move should be to thank your supervisor or dissertation advisor. This person likely had the most direct impact on your research and might also be involved in evaluating your thesis.
Mention any other academic staff who supported you. These could be anyone really, but usually include:
- librarians,
- lab technicians, or
Step Two: Acknowledge Academic Peers and Collaborators
Next, consider your peers, fellow researchers, or any collaborative partners.
If someone from your research team or another student contributed significantly, mention them by name and describe their input.
A typical line could be, “I like to acknowledge John Smith for his insightful contributions to the data analysis phase of this project.”
Step Three: Mention Funding Sources and Research Participants
If your research was funded by a grant or scholarship, acknowledging these sources is crucial.
You don’t need to delve into the specifics of the financials but do mention the organisation and how it supported your work.
If your project involved participants who contributed data or other valuable information, they should also be recognised here.
Step Four: Include Personal Acknowledgements
After the more formal citations, you can get a bit more personal. Thank friends and family who offered emotional support or even practical help, like proofreading drafts of your paper.
If you feel it’s fitting, you can also thank those who provided less tangible forms of support, such as inspiration or encouragement during challenging times.
Here, a more informal tone is acceptable. You might say, “I am immensely grateful to my family for their unwavering belief in my abilities and endless patience.”
Step Five: Consider Any Unusual Helpers
In some cases, people include acknowledgements of their pets for companionship or even places that offered a conducive environment for writing.
This should be brief but can add a charming touch to your acknowledgements, reflecting your personality.
Step Six: Review for Order and Tone
Revisit the order of your acknowledgements after drafting them.
The typical hierarchy goes from the most formal to the least, but your personal style and the nature of your project might influence this.
Ensure the tone remains respectful and professional but also warm where appropriate.
Step Seven: Conform to Your University’s Guidelines
Before finalising, check your university’s guidelines for the thesis format. Some institutions have specific requirements for the acknowledgements section concerning its placement or maximum length.
This step ensures your thesis complies with all formal requirements and respects academic protocols.
Step Eight: Proofread and Edit
Finally, proofread your acknowledgements carefully. Errors here, although less critical than in your main academic text, can still distract or give a poor impression.
You might ask a friend or family member to read through this section—they might remind you of someone you’ve overlooked!
The acknowledgement section, while less formal, is a significant part of your thesis. It not only allows you to thank those who supported you but also shows your ability to appreciate and recognise the contributions of others.
It’s your opportunity to reflect on the collaborative efforts that have shaped your academic endeavour.

Writing a thank you note to dissertation committee members, published by steve tippins on june 25, 2020 june 25, 2020.
Last Updated on: 2nd February 2024, 02:37 am
As much as your dissertation may have been a battle, and as much as members of your committee may have seemed unreasonable at times, their ultimate goal was to help you be a better researcher and finish your degree. They were your allies. So when you do finish, a strong thank you is important.
You may even dislike members of your committee, but remember that after you finish your dissertation , your committee members don’t just disappear. You will be working in a related field to them and having a good relationship with them may be important for your career later on. For example…
- You may need a recommendation from them
- They may be able to introduce you to potential data sources for research
- They may know people that ask them about you
- You may do joint research with some of them in the future
Or, maybe you’ve received a ton of support from your committee members and feel nothing but gratitude for how they’ve guided you. In that case, all the more reason to express your gratitude!
Either way, an academic field is a small world. Maintaining good relationships with members of the field is important for your career. And saying “thank you” is just good manners, after all.
Here’s how to write a thank-you note to dissertation committee members who’ve helped you along the way.
Thank Them in the Acknowledgments Section
It’s important to include a thank you note for your dissertation committee members in the acknowledgments section of your dissertation . It doesn’t have to be very long–one or two sentences is enough. It’s vital to do this because it’s expected, and not doing so may seem like an intentional snub.
Thank Your Committee Members Personally
It’s also kind to thank your committee members personally as well. Even the person who’s been hardest on you has helped you get to where you are. A personal thank-you often feels more genuine, personal, and real than what can be communicated by written words. Even if it’s as simple as looking them in the eye, shaking their hand, and saying “thank you for everything,” it matters.
Write a Thank You Note for Dissertation Committee Members
Even if you’ve already done everything above, it’s best to write a separate thank you note for your dissertation committee members as well. There are a couple of reasons to send an additional thank you note. First, they may never look at the acknowledgments section of your dissertation. And secondly, it shows that you went just a little above and beyond.
With handwriting being what it is today, I’d say it’s acceptable to write it on a computer. Print it out, sign it, and deliver it (slide it under their door, put it in their mailbox, mail it to them).
Tips for Writing a Thank You Note for Your Dissertation Committee
Be specific. Show them that you paid attention by thanking them for the specific roles that they played and the specific ways that they helped you get to the end. Saying something like, “thank you for being on my committee, without you I would have had to have somebody else on my committee,” isn’t going to endear you to them.
Address them properly. Even though you’re technically a doctor now too, still say, “Thank you Dr. ___” Unless they’ve explicitly asked you to call them by their first name, default to calling them “doctor” until they tell you otherwise.
Be genuine. It’s important not to have your letter sound like a form letter. While it should still be professional, it shouldn’t be sanitized of any personal touch. If you have funny memories of your time working with them, it would be appropriate to recount these with a tone of appreciation.
Example Thank You Note for Dissertation Committee
Dear Dr. ___,
Saying thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough now that you’ve helped me complete this journey. You were an integral part of me being able to make it to the end.
Without the help that you gave me in developing my methodology and the emotional support you gave me, I wouldn’t have made it.
I hope that I can “pay forward” what you’ve done for me by helping other people. I will use your selfless support as a model as I move forward.
Best wishes,
Dear Dr. ____
I’m writing to offer my deepest gratitude for the guidance you provided me as part of my dissertation committee. From the time I took your History of Education in the Progressive Era course, I knew you would be the one to help me sort out my thinking on my topic. Your suggestions brought in threads of thought that made my research so much richer, and my dissertation something I can be proud of having written. You’ve also inspired me with your own body of research and the gift of helping me visualize a similar trajectory for myself. I feel confident that I can succeed, standing on your shoulders.
I look forward to working with you again in the future, as our research interests will undoubtedly invite future collaboration. No doubt, we’ll be at the same conferences year after year! May you continue to inspire and enrich your students. I will miss being among them!
With Deepest Gratitude, Me

Thank an Advisor
We know the difference an academic advisor can make in a student's academic journey. They play a major role in helping students navigate the world of higher education, can be critical problem solvers for a variety of issues, and often provide that much needed dose of encouragement to get students through a program, a semester, or even just the week!
If an advisor has made a difference in your educational journey, why not thank them? The "Thank an Advisor" program allows you to express your gratitude in writing to your advisor. You can remain anonymous (to the recipient) or include your name.
Notes will be briefly screened and then sent to the advisor at the beginning of each month. Excerpts from your note may appear on our "Thank an Advisor" webpage for inspiration as well as narrative "evidence" of both the impact and outcomes of academic advising at Wayne State University.
