Bowser administration and metro announce plan for enhanced metrobus service to help riders amid dc circulator phase-out.

(Washington, DC) – Today, the Bowser Administration and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced temporary service adjustments to support most of the DC Circulator bus routes that will end on December 31, 2024.    “By consolidating more bus transit under the Metrobus brand, we can strengthen the District’s overall transit network, avoid duplicative services, and operate more efficiently,” said Acting DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum. “These changes will allow our partners at WMATA to better serve thousands of bus riders while using resources more cost-effectively.”    Recently, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced the planned phase-down of DC Circulator service beginning October 1, 2024, with service ending December 31, 2024. In preparation, WMATA conducted a comprehensive review of its bus network and the proposed 2025 Better Bus Network redesign. DDOT and WMATA have identified ways to leverage Metrobus’s extensive network to ensure a seamless experience for DC Circulator customers, enhance service to key destinations, and provide additional capacity on routes that may experience crowding due to the shift of Circulator passengers to Metrobus. WMATA will use its best efforts to provide transitional service based on customer volume and key connections until the launch of the Better Bus Network in July 2025.    Key Elements of the Metrobus Service Proposal:   The first phase of adjustments will begin on October 1, 2024, with the elimination of the Rosslyn-Dupont route. The remaining modifications will start in December 2024 with the end of Circulator service. These interim route adjustments will continue through July 2025, when the Bus Network Redesign routes are implemented, bringing further improvements to the District’s transit riders.

The WMATA Board of Directors is expected to vote on the service agreement at its September 12 meeting, allowing DDOT and WMATA to begin final planning on the service adjustments.     The proposed adjustments will be implemented at a relatively low incremental cost, using WMATA’s existing fleet. The annual cost is estimated at approximately $10 million, significantly lower than the Circulator’s 2022 operating expense of $42 million. This proposal also allows the District to avoid more than $200 million in capital investments needed to maintain Circulator operations.    DDOT is also working with RATP Dev, WMATA, and other local transit agencies to support all DC Circulator employees during this transition. DDOT will continue to offer resources to ensure that contracted employees have multiple opportunities to find new jobs. DDOT will host a virtual public meeting later in September to present the final plans for the Circulator closure and WMATA bus service schedules.     DC Circulator riders who need assistance navigating alternative travel options are encouraged to visit  wmata.com and use the Trip Planner feature. Alerts in effect, mariposa grove of giant sequoias.

The Mariposa Grove closed in spring 2015 for a that was formalized through the . The two primary goals of this project were to improve giant sequoia habitat and improve visitor experience. This included addressing the declining conditions of the grove and nearby South Entrance that were adversely affecting the ecological health of the sequoias (e.g., roads, trails and other buildings encroaching on roots of the ancient trees, hydrology issues). The Mariposa Grove reopened on June 15, 2018.

Through this project, the Mariposa Grove was designed to accommodate a certain number of people in order to maintain the facilities, protect natural and cultural resources, and provide a quality visitor experience. We are carefully monitoring the grove to evaluate how the new services are operating.

A free shuttle provides service from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza, near South Entrance, to the Mariposa Grove. The welcome plaza has about 300 parking spaces and may fill up by late morning. Arrive by mid-morning to increase chances of finding a place to park.

Dates are subject to change according to weather and road conditions, which may vary from year to year. In any given year, shuttle service will begin no earlier than April 15 (possibly later), and will close on or before November 30 (depending on conditions). See below for this year's hours.

8 am to 7 pm (last bus leaves Mariposa Grove at 8 pm). Buses pick up every 10 to 15 minutes.

8 am to 5:30 pm (last bus leaves Mariposa Grove at 6:30 pm). Buses pick up about every 15 minutes.

Weather permitting, 8 am to 3:30 pm (last bus leaves Mariposa Grove at 5:00 pm). Buses pick up about every 15 minutes.

No shuttle service available.

When the Mariposa Grove Road is open (approximately mid-April through November), it is only open to vehicles displaying a disability placard. The road is open to near the Grizzly Giant (including the trailhead and arrival area).

Access to Mariposa Grove is via a two-mile hike (each way) on the Washburn Trail or the Mariposa Grove Road (each has approximately 500 feet in elevation gain). Several miles of trails are available in the grove from that point. During winter, trails may be snowy and/or icy.

Bicycles are not allowed elsewhere in the the Mariposa Grove.

The is an eight-hour tour operated by our park concessioner, Yosemite Hospitality, which visits Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Part of this restoration project focused on creating new trail systems that allowed for accessibility and overall visitor access, while protecting the sequoia ecosystem and promoting ecological health. Some options include:

While the Mariposa Grove Road closes to cars from the end of November until at least April 1, all trails in the grove remain open in the winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. When closed to cars during winter, the Mariposa Grove Road is open to hikers, snowshoers, and skiers.

Access to Mariposa Grove when the road is closed is via a two-mile hike (each way) on the Washburn Trail or the Mariposa Grove Road (each have approximately 500 feet in elevation gain). Overnight camping is allowed in the Mariposa Grove from December 1 through April 15 the Mariposa Grove Road is closed cars and there is enough snow for skiing. A is required to camp, and camping is only allowed above the Clothespin Tree.

Water is available at the welcome plaza only and vault toilets are available in the Mariposa Grove at the arrival area, near the Grizzly Giant, and near the Mariposa Grove Cabin.

Reservations are required for all commercial carriers with vehicle capacity of 16 or more arriving to the Mariposa Grove. are only available to commercial operators having a commercial use authorization (CUA) from Yosemite National Park, and private, nonprofit bus groups.

Schools planning to visit the Mariposa Grove by bus should the Educational Fee Waiver Office for parking information and do not need to make advanced reservations online.
