Learn About Kids’ Educational Games

What are educational games.

Computer games have been extremely popular over the last several decades. People of all ages enjoy playing games on the computer as a form of entertainment. Unsurprisingly, computer games are especially popular among children. Educators have taken advantage of this fact to create computer games specifically designed for children. These video games are often referred to as “educational games” or “edutainment”. They are designed to teach or reinforce concepts and ideas in the context of a computer game. This means that kids can learn while they are having fun.

Kids computer games often allow the child to interact with the characters in the game. They can manipulate objects and variables in an effort to solve a goal. Often, they must learn how to solve puzzles, learn facts, or learn new skills before they can advance to the next level of the game. Some computer games force children to plan ahead and can be effective at developing their strategic thinking skills. After working on and improving these skills in the context of a computer game, the skills can often be transferred over and used to solve problems in real life.

Computer games used for education are a hot topic among many educators. Computer and video games are often portrayed in the media as mindless entertainment that often does more harm than good. However, there have been emerging studies that actually show the opposite. For this reason, many school systems in the United Stakes and the United Kingdom have begun to include computer games as part of the educational curriculum.

History of Educational Games

One of the first and most widely known computer game for kids was The Oregon Trail. This game was originally developed in 1971 by three student teachers in Minnesota. One of the teachers had the idea to create a video game based on a history class that he was currently teaching. By 1974, the game was accessible by students across Minnesota. The first Apple version was released in 1978, and proved to be extremely popular. Subsequent editions were released in 1980, 1985, 1992, and 1997. As late as 2009, an updated version was released for the iPhone. Many adults today can remember playing The Oregon Trail on Apple computers when they were in school.

Another extremely popular educational computer game was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? developed by Broderbund Software in 1983. This game was originally designed as an effort to get children interested in geography facts. In this game, the player acts as a detective and tries to hunt down Carmen Sandiego as she travels around the world committing crimes.  Players would have to know geographical facts in order to follow the right clue leading to the capture of a criminal. This game, originally on the Apple II computer system, also spawned a wide variety of spinoffs, including Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego?, Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego?, and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? It also spun off several television game shows for children on the PBS network.

Another classic kids computer game was Math Blaster. Math Blaster was first released in 1987. This game made math fun for kids by forcing them to quickly solve math problems as an integral part of the game’s fast paced shooter gameplay. Based on the popularity of Math Blaster, a sequel was produced in 1989, and soon an entire suite of games we produced under the Blaster Learning System brand. These included Reading Blaster and Science Blaster.

Due to the popularity of these early kids computer games, many other titles were released with the intent to both entertain and educate children. Some of these titles included:

* Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree * The ClueFinders * EcoQuest * Storybook Weaver * Genomics Digital Lab * Treasures of the Deep * Gizmos & Gadgets * Reader Rabbit * Quest Atlantis * JumpStart * PlaceSpotting

Who Might Like These Types of Games?

These games can be great for teachers and parents. Many parents are reluctant to let their children play video games when they would rather have them reading or playing outside. When children ask for video games to play, these can be great. Parents can be sure that their children are getting a learning benefit from them as well as having fun.

Teachers also are constantly looking for ways to educate their students in a fun way. These games can be a way to accomplish that; engaging the mind, teaching skills, and solidifying the concepts using interaction, audio, video and entertainment all at the same time.

Sorting Puzzles for Kids image

In an era where digital interaction is ubiquitous, discerning the right kind of screen time for children, especially for 5-year-olds, has become paramount for parents and educators alike. Amidst a sea of digital content, our games emerge as a beacon of developmental aid, learning, and fun for young learners. Designed specifically with the cognitive and emotional growth of 5-year-olds in mind, these games blend entertainment with educational value, making them a unique asset in a child's developmental journey.

The interactive nature of our games serves as the cornerstone of their effectiveness. For 5-year-olds, the world is a sprawling canvas of questions and curiosities. Our interactive games are crafted to tap into this innate curiosity, transforming every click, swipe, or command into a learning opportunity. This interactivity is not merely about receiving immediate responses from the game but is deeply integrated with educational objectives that cater to developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and basic literacy and numeracy.

Moreover, the adaptability of these games to individual learning paces is a game-changer. Each child is unique, with their strengths, weaknesses, and speed of learning. Our games for 5-year-olds are designed to recognize and adapt to this variability, offering a personalized learning experience. This ensures that every child feels both challenged and supported, promoting a healthy learning curve without the pressure of competition.

Social-emotional development is another critical area our games address. Through storylines that involve cooperation, empathy, and understanding diverse perspectives, children learn invaluable life skills. These interactive stories and scenarios encourage children to think about how their actions affect others, fostering empathy and emotional intelligence from a young age.

The imminent launch of our games on the web broadens their accessibility, ensuring that the developmental benefits they offer are not limited by device availability. This move towards web-based gaming is especially significant in today’s world, where equitable access to educational resources is a pressing need. By making these games available online, we are taking a step towards democratizing educational resources, making them accessible to a wider audience of 5-year-olds across different backgrounds.

Furthermore, the safety of digital spaces is a top priority. Our web-based games for 5-year-olds are designed with stringent safety measures to ensure a secure online environment. Parents and educators can have peace of mind knowing that children are not only learning in a fun and interactive way but are also protected from the potential pitfalls of the internet.

In conclusion, our games stand out as a valuable tool in the developmental arsenal for 5-year-olds. By seamlessly integrating education with entertainment, they offer a balanced approach to screen time, promoting cognitive development, emotional growth, and social skills. With the expansion into web-based gaming, we are excited to reach more young learners, providing them with a foundation of skills and knowledge through the medium they love most – games.

At Starfall, children have fun while they learn.

Starfall was founded by Dr. Stephen Schutz, who had difficulty learning to read as a child due to dyslexia. He was motivated to create a learning platform with untimed, multisensory interactive games that allow children to see, hear, and touch as they learn. read more...

Starfall was developed in the classroom by teachers and opened in August 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read. Since then it has expanded to include standards in language arts and mathematics for preschool through fifth grade and above. The program emphasizes exploration, play, and positive reinforcement—encouraging children to become confident and intrinsically motivated. Due to the engaging content that “feels like play,” Starfall serves as an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children. read more...

Starfall activities are research-based and align with state learning objectives for English language arts and mathematics. Its emphasis on phonemic awareness, systematic sequential phonics, and common sight words in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity is especially effective for teaching emergent readers, children of all ages with special needs or learning difficulties, as well as ELL (ESL) students. It is widely used in schools and homeschools.

Starfall’s low-cost membership program expands the free content to include additional animated songs, mathematics activities, and reading. Membership supports the production of new books, educational games, and movies.

If you're stuck inside and your kids are climbing the walls, but you aren't yet ready to let them watch Netflix from dawn to dusk, well, I don't blame you. Here are some games that are sometimes called "edutaining." Think of them as fun games that also teach something, but in a way your kids probably won't notice.

I do suggest setting some screen time limits before handing your children a device, but with these options you can at least rest assured that your kids are learning something.

I suggest getting a separate podcast app for your kids, so there's no way they'll accidentally end up listening to any adult content you don't want them to hear.

Furthermore, parents and kids know that just because the best free games for kids, as well as their tablet peers, are free, it doesn’t mean that they’re less entertaining and fun than their paid-for counterparts. The fact is, they are just as good, if not more, and often educational as well so your kids can learn while having fun

Here you’ll find the best free games for kids and the best no-cost titles for tablets for all children aged five to 11. Completely free at the time of download, some of these games build on skills like creative problem solving and critical thinking while others are more straightforward, engaging and entertain your kids without being overly complicated or overwhelming.

If you’re looking for the best free games on tablet and PC that you can leave your kids to play alone, just keep scrolling. We’ve kept things short and sweet, with 10 Android and iOS tablet games up first and 10 PC games over the page.

10 best games for kids on Android tablets and iPad

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

These days, kids are more likely to first experience computing and gaming on a tablet than a home computer. To that end, our tablet selection skews a little younger.

Everything on this list is rated 3+, according to Google , and should be safe for even very young children. However, Apple rates most of these games with a more conservative 4+, except for Super Stickman Golf and Spaceteam, which are 9+. The games are all simple to control, easy to get into, and fun to play.

A note on IAPs and ads: Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a free game that’s not out to make a buck somewhere, so several games listed here will offer in app purchases for in game currency. And, some others will feature ads. In the former case, you can disable IAPs at a system level on your device before handing it over to a kid. With the latter, you should play the game yourself to ensure the ads are OK to show to your kid.

1. Sago Mini Friends

This sweet-natured set of mini-games encourages creativity, dexterity, and puzzle solving. It starts with you selecting a colorful character, who then explores a neighborhood of cartoon houses.

Knock on a door and you’re invited inside for an animated, entertaining playdate. This might involve dress-up, hammering nails into a birdhouse, or enjoying a tasty snack.

Everything’s bright and cheerful, and the game promotes empathy, with one friend looking glum if spoils aren’t evenly shared.

Get Sago Mini Friends for Android and a paid version exists for iOS . A Windows PC version is also available. This game has no IAPs/advertising.

Lego Tower

2. Lego Tower

In all honesty, we’re sure most parents would be happier seeing kids playing with real Lego rather than virtual bricks on a tablet. But when the real thing isn’t an option, this game’s a nice substitute.

The game invites you to build and operate your very own dream Lego Tower. You'll create apartments and businesses in which Minifigure residents can live work and play as well as visit the towers of friends to trade items and help them build. There are thousands of pieces to collect and plenty of characters and items to unlock.

Get Lego Tower for Android and iOS . IAPs are present but are entirely optional.

Best Free Games for Kids

3. Toca Kitchen 2

If your child regularly uses a tablet, you’ve likely already installed some Toca Boca games. They’re a smart mix of education and play, and Toca Kitchen 2 is no exception.

As you’d expect, Toca Kitchen 2 is all about cooking. This game invites you to create meals – however you prefer. Devise your own recipes and foist your creations on a colorful cast of characters, whether you’ve carefully constructed a burger, or decided to throw a watermelon into the microwave and cover it in sauce.

Get Toca Kitchen 2 for Android . This game has no IAPs/advertising. A paid version exists for iOS .

Best Free Games for Kids

4. Llama Spit Spit

Llama Spit Spit is an oddball shoot ’em up, featuring a flying llama blasting crazy cartoon enemies with a mix of spittle and high-powered weaponry.

The controls are incredibly simple, meaning even younger players can get on board. Power-ups and collectable llamas (with their own background imagery) keep things interesting over the long term.

The one snag is it’s the spit of Shooty Skies ( Android / iOS ), which is the better (and more surreal) game – although the lack of ads and IAP means the llamas get the nod for this particular list.

Get Llama Spit Spit for Android and iOS . This game has no IAPs/advertising.

Crossy Road

5. Crossy Road

Crossy Road cleverly reworks Frogger, with blocky characters hopping across chunky endless landscapes, trying to avoid a dunk in a river or getting flattened by a train. But the masterstroke is a raft of unlockable characters.

Over 100 characters are there to be found, and although IAP lurks you really don't need them to enjoy the game.

Get Crossy Road for Android and iOS . This game features advertising, and has non-essential IAPs.

Best Free Games for Kids

6. Frisbee Forever 2

You’d think flinging a plastic disc about would make for a rubbish video game. Fortunately, Frisbee Forever 2 is more akin to a set of rollercoasters, with you guiding your disc through gates, collecting stars along the way.

There’s a hint of Nintendo about this breezy arcade experience, with its vibrant visuals, smart level design, and a basic control system suitable for all. And although there are freemium underpinnings, you’re rewarded with in-game currency for every second played – even if an attempt at a level ends in failure.

Get Frisbee Forever 2 for Android and iOS . This game features advertising, and has non-essential IAPs for more rapidly unlocking discs and zones.

Best Free Games for Kids

7. Fruit Ninja

In the fast-paced Fruit Ninja, your digit becomes a virtual sword, hacking pieces of fruit lobbed on to the screen in two, and attempting to avoid cutting into game-ending bombs.

It’s ideal fodder for a tablet, since you can make pleasingly large swipes across the display. But also the game offers local multiplayer, so two kids can zealously pit their fruit-slicing skills against each other.

Get Fruit Ninja for Android and iOS . This game features advertising, and has non-essential IAPs for purchasing in-game currency.

Best Free Games for Kids

8. Mekorama

With its tiny isometric worlds you spin with a finger, and landscape-flipping mechanics, Mekorama brings to mind Monument Valley. But this game has no Escher-like optical illusions; instead, it concentrates on straightforward pathfinding as you help an ambling robot reach its goals.

It’s a charming, thoughtful, tactile experience, and on a tablet is suitable for parent/child play, with you working through the puzzles together. Once you’re done with the 50 built-in levels, you can download more from the internet, or make your own.

Get Mekorama for Android and iOS . This game features optional IAP for tipping the developer.

Best Free Games for Kids

9. Super Stickman Golf 3

For many kids, golf won’t excite. But the Super Stickman universe doesn’t partake in normal golf. Instead, you’re thwacking balls across larger-than-life side-on courses – massive castles; laser-strewn bases; floating islands.

Even though it’s fun to play by yourself, and makes full use of bigger screens (by letting you see more of each course and therefore aim more precisely), it also has fantastic multiplayer game types. You can play turn-by-turn matches with friends, or try your hand at frenetic, madcap ‘race to the hole’ skirmishes.

Get Super Stickman Golf 3 for iOS . This game features advertising, and IAP for unlocking a premium upgrade (more courses and slots for turn-based multiplayer) and in-game currency.

Best Free Games for Kids

10. Spaceteam

If you’ve several kids with devices, Spaceteam’s a delightfully bonkers way to have them all yell at each other in a vaguely productive manner that in theory helps them work as a team. Specifically, a ‘spaceteam’ in a ship trying to outrun an exploding star, with control panels designed by a sadist.

Once devices are connected, instructions appear on your screen – but the controls may be on someone else’s. So you’ll have people yelling nonsense like “someone turn on the dangling shunter”, while figuring out if their own screen has a ‘spectrobolt’ slider. Just like in Star Trek .

Get Spaceteam for Android and iOS . This game has a single optional IAP that unlocks new features and themes
