Can You Really Buy A PhD Online?

Much attention has been paid in the UK to the petition aiming to ban the advertising and provision of essay mill services . This says that you can buy a PhD for £6,750 , a figure which has been floating around the media for some time.

But, is it really possible to buy a PhD online and for a price similar to this?

The answer, unfortunately, is yes.

You can definitely buy PhD level writing. And a student who is familiar with how the essay industry works can find a better value PhD thesis than that offered by a typical essay mill.

How Do You Go About Buying A PhD?

You can, of course, buy a fake PhD certificate, or use your “ life experience ” to get a qualification from a fake university . But such qualifications are unlikely to stand up to external scrutiny.

You might try and make connections directly with a writer and work with them.

But I suspect most people will see the type of advertising for PhD mills that appears when you search on Google. It’s hard to avoid it, as even a prospective student looking for advice about which university to study a PhD at will be hit with ads of this type.

cheap fake phd

The advertising for PhD writing services is nowhere near as advanced as for essay mills but many of the same marketing techniques are in use. You see guarantees , discounts , promises of fast turnaround times and the old favourite of “ 0% plagiarism “. But, with my marketing hat on, I think you can also tell that these services don’t really understand the prospective PhD market – although I’m not about to provide free consultancy for here to help them improve.

The less developed market for PhD writing services is also reflected in the cost per click prices charged by Google (the amount each advertiser pays every time someone clicks on the link). Advertising for PhD mills is generally cheap .

There are some high value keywords. For instance, Google in the UK suggests that advertisers bid between £11.22 and £20.49 per click for the search term “ phd thesis ” to get at the top of the first screen (the only position that really counts).

But many terms go for much less. A search term like “ buy phd online ” only requires a cost per click between £1.15 and £4.92. These costs are usually far lower than the equivalent terms for essays, coursework and assignments.

How Much Does A PhD Thesis Cost?

The web market for buying PhD level work is nowhere near as advanced as equivalent essay mills for undergraduate level. Many of the essay mills I checked advertise they will write PhDs, but do not have any detail or pricing information available on their website.

I did find a site which sold PhD by chapters. A 75,000 word PhD thesis would cost around £6,000 , not far from the headline figure used at the start of this post. However, the site also advertised having coupons available and I suspect I could have easily have pushed that price below £5,000 had I asked for a discount in the online chat.

There are much more developed PhD mills out there. Some show understanding of the contract cheating PhD level market.

One PhD mill, for example, splits its services to match the stages of the PhD journey where a student might want to hire support.

This includes everything from help with the initial application and proposal , through to chapter writing , to tutorials and mentoring for the final viva . It also claims to offer a premium service of publishable level work , produced in collaboration with an academic expert. For that level of service, enough to build the credentials for an academic job, the 75,000 word thesis would work out at £22,500 .

As my research investigating academic writers has shown , many essay mills find low priced writers and just act as an intermediary. Such budget price writers do exist at PhD level , even if they are harder to find. Presumably, some writers relish the intellectual challenge of completing advanced research as opposed to just writing basic essays.

And, you can buy a custom written PhD thesis much cheaper.

A report in the Indian media has shown that an original PhD thesis can be purchased in India for 50,000 Indian rupees (about £540) , with payment in installments possible. The source claims that PhD writing offers like this one are not uncommon and that academics will moonlight as PhD writers. I also understand that similar services can often be found advertising in newspapers in India.

PhD writing requests also occasionally appear on the major freelancing sites.

A (live at the time of writing) request for a PhD thesis on English Literature, from a buyer in Pakistan, saw 7 people, mostly from India, offering to complete this in six weeks at rates between £750 and £1,500 (with an average of £1114) for 75,000 words . 4 of the 7 bidders were from India. At face value, fulfilling the request in that time does not seem realistic for anyone, but this may be enough to secure a successful PhD completion in Pakistan.

What About Buying A PhD Literature Review?

Just as one of the PhD mills advertises its approach of completing a PhD thesis in collaborative stages, a student using a freelance site may also outsource their PhD thesis chapter by chapter . This may be because they feel able to complete part of the thesis themselves, but need help with some sections, or they may use it as an opportunity to audition a writer to work with throughout the process.

Here is another freelance site example, taking bids, with 40 people from around the world offering to complete a 3,500 word literature review for a PhD thesis .

cheap fake phd

The person making the request states that they are in the UK (this information is mostly reliable as the requester is verified). They are also pricing in pounds, which is not common for people outside the UK.

They have proposed a budget between £20 and £250, with offers received between £20 and £500. The mean (average) offer is at £165 (which would be about £47 per 1000 words – when I looked at essay pricing, I found lots of people willing to work for £7.50 for 1000 words ). Perhaps a better measure is the mode, where 17 offers are at £150 (or £43 per 1000 words ).

This is a prolific group of bidders, with 4884 successfully completed jobs between them, with most coming from Kenya, Pakistan and India, but also including offers from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Canada.

Just looking at the bidder profiles is interesting. I even found a graduate from a university I used to work at (but not someone I knew), using his MBA as a credential, completing assignments for students and even preparing fake reference letters for them (for which the going rate is around £20 per fake reference).

It just goes to show that there are many ways to get a PhD if you’re creative about it.

Should We Focus On The PhD Contract Cheating Market

The area is very much understudied. Although I’ve provided other examples in previous academic papers and talks the amount of data available is small, so it is difficult to study this systematically .

It does appear that PhDs are easier to achieve in some countries than others . We need employers to understand that not all qualifications are equal.

I’ve often discussed how an MBA is often just seen as a stepping stone to a higher level leadership job . So, people will contract cheat here. In some places, it appears that a PhD is also considered like this.

The good news is that, if academic integrity processes are suitably robust, simply buying a PhD level thesis in the UK should not be enough for its holder to be awarded a PhD title .

The student still has a spoken viva exam to get through.

Yes, students can train for this viva (and, as I’ve shown, there are services offering to prepare them), but here examiners need to have the confidence to fail the candidate if they do not have the in-depth knowledge and understanding that is required.

It all comes down to the academic integrity of the supervisory team and examiners , along with the institutional process this sits within. And getting the right student, with the motivation and ability to complete a PhD is important too. PhD students most certainly have a role to play in preserving academic integrity .

My work focuses on buying masters and doctorates in economics and development. These should be the freshest prices. Dont forget, because they are black market contracts, you may not always get what you expect.

‘PhDs for Sale’: The Thriving Business of Fake Doctorates

cheap fake phd

On 5 September 2022, Samith Mapalagama (46), the director of a sanitary ware company, was scrolling through his Facebook feed, when a message popped up. The sender was a local representative of a university based in the US.

His message read: “We offer honorary doctorate degrees. If you are a professional you can get the degree. Next graduation on November 6, 2022 (at) Taj Samudra Hotel. Cost only LKR 390,000. This is [sic] value-added qualifications to your life”.

According to company records in the US State of Delaware, accessed by the author, this university was among three entities that shared an agent based in Sussex, England. All three universities were set up in 2019 – two of them on the same day.

cheap fake phd

Persuasive messages like the one received by Mapalagama are a testament to a new booming trade: the sale of honorary doctorates and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) titles without the many years of exhaustive research to obtain such a qualification.

Research conducted by the author found that most self-proclaimed ‘universities’ like these, that are not accredited to run as higher education institutions, operate from countries like India, the US and Nigeria, and sell honorary doctorate titles for between USD 62 and USD 1200 and organise convocation ceremonies for the recipients.

While some Sri Lankans willingly pay for these titles, for purposes of prestige or honour, these ‘universities’ also approach professionals and persuade them to purchase a title to boost their profile.

And in some instances, there are underhand deals as well.

In a WhatsApp communication, the founder of one ‘university’ claiming to be based in India and the US, promises a professional three doctorates in exchange for persuading between 12 to 15 people to buy honorary doctorates from his university for INR 35,000 (USD 438), and to organise a convocation in Qatar or a nearby country.

“What about the event cost?,” the professional who wished to remain anonymous had asked the university founder, to which he had replied,  “you have to organise that”, suggesting the price for a doctorate is hiked to INR 50,000 (USD 626) to cover event costs and  “run the show”.

‘No online PhDs’

Just as honorary doctorates are being sold, many entities running operations from India are unlawfully offering online PhDs to candidates outside Indian territory.

“For doctorate programmes, we do not allow online or distance learning. You have to follow those programmes in India,” an official at India’s University Grants Commission told this author.

However, one India-based entity, when approached undercover, said it can issue a PhD certificate in 45 days for INR 85,000 (USD 1065) after a 250-page thesis is submitted.

“You may have [sic] backdated PhD,” the founder of the entity, said in a WhatsApp message. “We will send (the certificate) by speed post or courier”.

Contrary to the general practice of conferring honorary doctorates after a thorough screening, he said his university could sell the title in 30 days. “Only five thousand (INR). Please share your photo and name,” he said.

Another ‘university’ said it would offer a PhD certificate once the applicant submits a 300-page thesis and makes a payment of INR 40,000 (USD 500).

Both entities had not obtained mandatory accreditation from India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council to run as a higher education institution.

Spotting a bogus university

Many of the  ‘universities’ engaged in malpractices which we approached had failed to furnish sufficient details of their academic programmes or their academic staff on their website. Most content available was highly riddled with grammatical errors. There were also insufficient contact details on most of these websites. Although some had opted to include words like ‘USA’ and ‘British’ in their names – in what seemed an attempt to create the impression of a legitimate institution – the addresses listed were not in those countries.

A search on Google Street View on some of these addresses returned results of empty buildings, streets, and bare patches of land that did not even have billboards containing the names of such institutions.

The process of accrediting universities varies in each country. While state authorities are usually involved in the process, some countries — like the US — certify certain commissions to accredit higher education institutions.

However, it is clear that some of these bogus universities pretend to be awaiting accreditation from commissions — which are not even certified to conduct such processes. To further their claim to legitimacy, they often display the ISO 9001:2015 logo on their website – a standard that demonstrates the ability to consistently provide services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. But this logo does not certify that the particular business is accredited to operate as a higher education institution.

Laws on regulating foreign academic programmes

Sri Lankan authorities lack the teeth to crack down on entities that offer unrecognised higher education programmes to Sri Lankans directly, or through their local affiliate institutions, as the University Grants Commission ( UGC ) only oversees academic programmes of state-run universities.

On its website, the UGC says it recognises foreign institutions listed in the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook or the International Handbook of Universities , but the recognition does not “indicate the authenticity of the degree certificate”. This leaves a prospective undergraduate or postgraduate with the responsibility of establishing the legitimacy of such entities.

“The ministry of higher education only oversees local private degrees and not foreign ones,” K.T.S. Wijesiriwardena, an assistant director at the state ministry of higher education’s Non-State Higher Education Division that oversees local private institutions said.

She added that a bill on regulating all academic programmes, including those offered by foreign universities, is pending cabinet approval and that a commission would have to be set up to look into these matters after then.

“But that is going to take some time,” she said.

While Mapalagama had turned down the offer to obtain an honorary doctorate, many others however continue to claim such titles. “Malpractices in the foreign education sector threaten the well-being of society because it erodes social trust and worsens inequality. Therefore, it’s a must to have a proper system to mitigate these risks,” Mapalagama noted.

Until a proper mechanism is in place to stem such malpractices, the business of selling doctorates will continue to thrive in broad daylight, paving the way for a plethora of concerns in the academic world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest online doctorate.

In the age where online learning is becoming the norm, it comes as no surprise that more and more institutions are offering doctoral degrees online. Online education, by its nature, tends to be cheaper than in-person learning. To give you a better idea, some of the cheapest online doctoral programs are:

  • North Carolina A&T State University’s Doctor of Philosophy program  costs just $233 per credit, or $4,194 per year in annual tuition for in-state residents. However, tuition is significantly higher for residents of other states.
  • Columbia Southern University  offers doctorate programs at $435 per credit hour (or $391.50 for CSU Learning Partner members). The university tries to include textbooks  and eBooks in the total cost to lower your costs even more. Of course, this may not always be valid for those working toward doctorates.

It’s worth mentioning that many doctorates (even those online) offer financial aid opportunities to help you pay part or all of your tuition costs. It may be worth looking into programs where these opportunities exist.

Do Online Ph.D. Programs Provide Financial Aid?

If you want to earn your doctorate online, you can still apply for FAFSA  if the school or program accepts it. Consider online schools and programs that offer financial aid.

Most universities will offer scholarships and grants to qualifying students, whether they are attending in-person or online classes. For example, students at Missouri State University’s Doctor of Nursing program can apply for MSU’s annual scholarship.

Note: Although you can apply for various scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial aid, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to get them.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Legitimate?

Yes, there are a large number of legitimate online Ph.D. programs offered by reputable institutions. As with any higher-education program, it’s essential to check that the school is accredited before enrolling, as this is directly related to the value of any qualification. It’s also important to consider the institution’s reputation, which may influence potential future employers.

Can I Get a Ph.D. for Free?

Several fully-funded Ph.D. programs  offer doctorates with no out-of-pocket costs. These programs typically cover tuition and other expenses for the entire duration of the program through scholarships, grants, work-study, or a combination of these. Some schools even offer a stipend for living expenses.

However, many of these programs involve on-campus attendance. The options for fully-funded online doctoral programs are much more limited.

Key Takeaways

An online doctoral qualification not only helps you to advance your career but also encourages your personal development via critical thinking, leadership, and analytical skills. You’ll find that pursuing one of the cheapest online Ph.D. programs in 2022 will provide countless benefits!

Create PhD databases to flush out fraudsters, universities told

Lack of publicly available data on doctoral degree holders is allowing people to add fake credentials to their resumés, says research fraud expert.

Oxford United fan with a replica Cup Trophy to illustrate Create PhD databases to flush out fraudsters, universities told

Universities have been urged to create publicly accessible PhD databases to allow people to check whether individuals have the doctoral degrees they claim amid concerns over a rise in the number of fake CVs.

The call from Dorothy Bishop, emeritus professor of developmental neuropsychology at the University of Oxford , follows her frustrated attempts to check the credentials of someone claiming to have DPhils from her institution.

Professor Bishop, a leading academic fraud sleuth, was surprised to find that only “employers, prospective employers, other educational institutions, funding bodies or recognised voluntary organisations” could request verification of a doctorate and that the “student's permission…should be acquired prior to making any verification request”.

Checking the online university Gazette , which lists notifications of viva examinations, could be attempted only by those within the university, and this information was likely to be incomplete, she added.

Efforts to check the PhD credentials of someone else claiming to hold a doctorate from a different UK university also proved difficult, said Professor Bishop, who explained that data protection rules were cited as a reason for not releasing information.

While doctoral graduates are often required by their universities to deposit copies of their theses at their libraries, or the British Library’s EThOS service , which holds more than 600,000 theses, such databases are not comprehensive given a number of exceptions around commercial confidentiality, nor do they hold most dissertations published before the service’s launch in 2009.

“My own preference would be for all universities to have a database similar to that at Macquarie University in Australia, where you can just type in someone’s name and it responds with the date and type of degree they obtained,” said Professor Bishop, who added that this could “include all types of graduate and postgraduate degree”.

Similar verification portals also existed at Canadian universities, such as Toronto’s York University , noted Professor Bishop, while France’s national database has details for all doctoral theses published since 1985.

Such systems were unlikely to cost huge amounts because “presumably the database already exists” and people were already employed to field validation requests, said Professor Bishop. “Legal issues regarding data protection could be bypassed by requiring new graduates to give signed consent to their inclusion in the register,” she added.

Oxford, which says that it is mandatory for students completing doctoral degrees to deposit electronic copies with its research archive, was approached for comment.

Professor Bishop’s call follows several recent exposés by the Fake PhD Investigations blog, which has highlighted how fraudulent claims to PhDs have been used by people to get ahead in business, politics and academia. That anonymous blog claims that 45 per cent of doctoral students do not finish their doctoral studies , though a lack of a PhD degree is often glossed over on a resumé.

Professor Bishop said she agreed there were some acceptable reasons for not wanting your PhD information made public – such as living in an oppressive country that targets intellectuals, or the risk of being targeted by stalkers and fraudsters – but she said these cases were likely to be fairly rare.

Claiming that privacy rules were “protecting fraudsters”, she said: “This is a real problem, and my view is that the perils of not being able to verify credentials are far greater than any harms from making this information public.”

Pursuing an online PhD program can provide flexibility and convenience for working professionals and parents.

However, earning a doctoral degree remotely also raises many questions about cost, financial aid, legitimacy, and more.

The section below answers some of the most frequently asked questions about affordable online PhD options .

What are some of the cheapest online doctorate programs?

While tuition costs vary, some particularly affordable options include:

  • North Carolina A&T State University’s online Doctor of Philosophy program charges just $233 per credit hour for in-state students.
  • Columbia Southern University offers doctoral programs starting at $435 per credit hour, including textbooks and eBooks.
  • Many schools provide financial assistance, which can lower out-of-pocket costs for online learners. Checking a program’s aid opportunities is advisable.

Can I get financial aid for an online PhD program?

Yes, financial aid, including scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans, is often available for online doctoral students–some of which are known as “ fully funded online PhD programs “. Steps to take:

  • Complete the FAFSA if the program/school accepts it.
  • Research scholarships and grants specifically for online learners.
  • Ask about aid directly through the school or program.
  • Explore employer education benefits and professional development funds.

Are online PhD programs seen as legitimate credentials?

Absolutely. Top schools like Stanford, Columbia, and MIT now offer online doctorates. Be sure to verify:

  • The program has valid accreditation .
  • The school is non-profit and regionally accredited.
  • Past graduates found career success after earning their degrees .

A small number of schools provide full funding for select on-campus Ph.D. students. But free online options besides the GI Bill for veterans are very limited. Realistically, expect to pay some tuition costs unless you secure a full scholarship or grant.

Affordable online Ph.D. programs do exist but require diligent research. Seeking aid and evaluating total costs are key steps for remote doctoral students.

Finding an affordable online Ph.D. is possible with research and utilizing all financial aid opportunities available. Being flexible about the school and program can also help you find the best value.

Why Should You Get a Doctorate Degree?

A doctorate degree elevates individuals to expert-level knowledge in any field. You should get a doctorate degree to develop your skills and expand your understanding of a subject or field, preferably a field you are passionate about. Earning this advanced degree can open several career opportunities and can help you reach your career goals.

The academic training you receive from these campus programs will help you to develop critical thinking skills, presentation skills, and communication skills. Also, starting and finishing your dissertation and research will help you to develop project management skills which many employers look for in leadership roles.

Best Doctorate Degree Career Options

The career prospects for doctorate degree holders are quite impressive. With a doctorate degree, individuals not only earn more than those with just undergraduate or master’s degrees, but they also don’t have to start from the entry level and enjoy better career advancements. Going through the dissertation process proves your advanced research and analytical skills.

While many doctorate degree holders pursue a career in academia, some still work in other non-academic fields such as media, consultation, and think tanks. Employers often value doctorate degree holders because they offer unique skills like the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Doctorate Degree Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, doctorate graduates earn a median weekly income of $1,885 . This shows that doctorate programs offer a good remuneration irrespective of the field or discipline. The report shows that employees with a doctorate degree can earn $94,000 per year.

This figure is far higher than what master’s degree holders earn on average. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree earn even less. In the long run, this shows that a doctorate degree is worth the trouble if you want a high annual wage. A doctoral degree is a terminal degree, meaning there is no higher university level.

Can You Attend a Doctorate Degree Program for Free?

Yes, there are some cases where you can attend a doctorate degree program for free. There are some fully funded doctorate degree programs, where graduate research students across different fields have the option to attend without paying anything.

Some are partially funded and this means the students will be required to foot some parts of the tuition rates. The programs often waive tuition and fees and provide students with annual stipends to support their living expenses.

Counterfeit versions of popular drugs used for weight loss are putting people at risk.

Experts have grown increasingly concerned about fake versions of Ozempic and popular weight loss drugs. These copycats can look deceptively real, and may contain dangerous substances or entirely different drugs altogether.

In June, the World Health Organization warned that fake batches of Ozempic were found in the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Also in June, Eli Lilly issued a letter expressing concern that counterfeit versions of its own drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound , were being sold online, through social media and at medical spas.

Those who study the counterfeit drug market say these findings are alarming, but not all that surprising. The drugs are expensive, often hard to find and highly sought-after.

“Such high demand and short supply and such a desperate population — that’s a recipe for disaster,” said George Karavetsos, a former director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations.

As a result, a counterfeit market has emerged, with phony drugs sold online at low prices without a prescription or any contact with a doctor. Some websites have storefronts to sell what they claim is semaglutide, the substance in Ozempic, which customers can add straight into an online shopping cart. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy said it had identified thousands of websites illegally selling drugs like Ozempic, including fake versions. Patients often have no way to verify what’s in these products.

Shabbir Imber Safdar, the executive director of the Partnership for Safe Medicines, said he worried about both the rise of fake drugs and also the popularity of compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, the substance in Mounjaro. These customized versions of drugs are made at compounding pharmacies and under best practices, contain ingredients that come from facilities registered with the F.D.A. But regulators have warned about adverse events linked to compounded semaglutide, and stressed that compounded medications are subject to less oversight than traditionally approved medications.

Artificial Intelligence

How to tap AI’s potential while avoiding its pitfalls in the workplace

Brian Eastwood

Jul 15, 2024

Since the Industrial Revolution, many of the biggest advances in how people work — from the org chart to the assembly line to the two-week development sprint — have emphasized getting the most from human capabilities.

Artificial intelligence has a different impact on the workplace, according to Ethan Mollick , SM ’04, PhD ’10. This presents a new challenge to leaders.

“When there’s only human intellect in the room, we need to have human monitoring, human coaching, and human performance,” said Mollick, an associate professor of management at the Wharton School and author of a new book, “ Co-Intelligence: Living and Working With AI .” “Now we have access to a different form of intelligence. How do we build a system of control around it that takes advantage of what it does well but avoids the disasters that might result if it does it badly?”

Speaking at the recent Work/24 event hosted by MIT Sloan Management Review , Mollick discussed what organizations should expect from their AI models, how companies can effectively and practically experiment with AI, and which concerns about AI warrant the most attention.

Account for AI errors

Using AI wisely requires an understanding of how it differs from other software processes. AI models receive inputs and generate outputs like most software applications, but they work more like humans because they’re trained on human writing, Mollick said.

This means organizations need to reset their expectations about reliability. AI models will make errors. The question is whether they’re better or worse than human errors, Mollick said.

“We obviously shouldn’t be using it to run a nuclear arsenal at this point, and I would not be taking it as your only source of medical advice,” he said. However, research has shown that GPT-4 can help diagnose complex medical cases , so it may offer a valuable second opinion. “How we work all those things together is an open question,” Mollick said.

He suggested using the Best Available Human standard: Is the AI more reliable than the most reliable human available at that moment? If so, then the AI model is worth using — but its output should still be checked, especially given the importance of the decisions that many workers make.

“As soon as the AI model is good enough, everyone tends to fall asleep at the wheel. They stop paying attention to what the AI can do and can’t do, and they don’t check the results,” Mollick said. “Just like we build processes around human issues, errors, and results, we’re going to have to do the same thing with AI.”

Demonstrate successful, low-risk use

As organizations build processes for working with AI, leaders need to set careful parameters for how it will be used, Mollick said. There should be a clear distinction between using AI for financial, legal, or health care tasks that must meet compliance requirements and for less-risky applications, such as using AI for creative inspiration .

“What I’m seeing from a lot of organizations is very vague guidelines that absolutely discourage anyone from using AI,” Mollick said. “You want to model successful use, rather than shutting things down. People think of it in terms of policymaking but not in terms of culture or change.”

Experienced IT leaders know that all-out bans only lead to shadow IT, he said. It happened with smartphones and tablets, and now it’s happening with AI. Mollick recalled an ironic conversation with an organization that had a policy banning the use of ChatGPT. The policy was written using ChatGPT.

One recommendation for getting over the hump is to think about AI use in terms of accountability. Workers are held responsible for errors but not necessarily for bad ideas. If the risk associated with AI use is minimal, then it shouldn’t be discouraged.

Another tip: Ask executives to use AI so they understand what it’s good and bad at, learn how to write effective prompts, and can model responsible behavior from the top down. “Just have people use these systems themselves. This is the ultimate user innovation ,” Mollick said.

Worry about the right things

Amid AI’s potential, leaders likely wonder what AI will mean for the future of their organizations and the workers they manage. Mollick said some common concerns are overblown, while others are worthy of more attention.

“It’s a little weird to me that people are so worried about privacy,” he said. This worry is particularly misplaced given how many enterprises use cloud-based email and file storage services. Organizations should be fine if their employees know to avoid free chatbots that use data inputs to train models, he said.

Related Articles

The need for proprietary models is also overrated. “Bigger models are generally better,” Mollick said, because they’ve been trained on larger data sets. Mollick noted that Bloomberg’s $10 million custom stock-trading large language model was outperformed by GPT-4 , which had no additional customization.

On the other hand, Mollick noted that two areas of concern require significant discussion. One is how AI models can replicate human biases — for example, when the technology is used to make personnel decisions such as highlighting key qualities in letters of recommendation or making a job offer. Here, organizations will need to keep a human in the loop. (This also falls into the category of tasks that must meet legal requirements.)

The other is AI’s impact on entry-level work. Mollick said he worries that automation will “break” the apprenticeship model as AI continues to boost productivity and outperform humans on the low-level tasks that workers complete for hands-on training experience.

“In most cases, I would argue that AI is already better than most of your interns,” he said. “Are you still going to train people in the same way when the deal is broken? The deal is, I help train you, you do work. If I get the work done another way, am I still training people?”

The deceptive Biden G7 video was quickly debunked, but it kept going viral anyway

President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders look at the sky during a flag ceremony with paratroopers

Misleading videos and false claims that President Joe Biden wandered off aimlessly from the G7 conference last week continued to go viral despite debunkings and fact-checks that tried to correct the record.

Google recommended false versions of the story as “top stories.” Deceptive video clips continued to accumulate millions of views on X. Copies of the videos were replayed on TikTok and YouTube with little context. Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, applied fact-checking labels to some posts but not to all.

The persistent nature of the misleading videos illustrates how major tech platforms and partisan media are playing off each other in the 2024 election cycle, keeping viral stories in people’s feeds after they’ve been proven to be misleading or even false.

In a familiar playbook, hyperpartisan outlets will continually push a piece of misleading information on their platforms and on social media, causing motivated followers who are primed to believe the outlets to amplify it further. That inundates tech platforms, which are unwilling or unable to correct the record quickly enough. The bad information then continues to outpace efforts to fact-check it.

The story revolved around Biden and other world leaders being greeted by a skydiving demonstration last Thursday at the Group of Seven meeting in Italy . Video shows Biden walking away from the leaders and toward a group of parachutists who had just landed, giving them two thumbs-up.

But conservative media outlets and the Republican National Committee posted videos shot from angles that cut out the parachutists. Some of their posts said incorrectly that Biden “wandered off.” Without the skydivers Biden was addressing included in those videos, viewers could be left with the impression that he was walking absentmindedly.

The misleading videos were an example of so-called cheap fakes, in which low-tech editing or other minor changes to videos, along with incorrect context, can amplify false but convincing messages.

The episode illustrated the dynamics of the new information ecosystem, in which tech platforms are hesitant to emphasize vetted, factual information during an election year for fear of appearing partisan — even as partisan operatives take advantage of the platforms’ attempts at neutrality.

Laura Edelson, an assistant professor of computer sciences at Northeastern University, said that the people behind the misleading claims are benefiting from tech companies’ cost-cutting. In the past two years, companies such as Google, Meta and X laid off large numbers of employees who worked on trust and safety teams , the core of the companies’ efforts to limit the spread of misinformation . “They eliminated the staffers who were enforcing those policies,” she said.

That puts the platforms in a relatively defenseless position against a partisan media outlet that decides to push a misleading claim, Edelson said. In this case, the conservative outlets were savvy about the topic, continuing to hammer the narrative that Biden is too old to be president.

“The reason this can be so successful is that it’s not trying to create a new narrative. It’s trying to reinforce a narrative that both people in the campaign and disinformation spreaders have been talking about for years,” she said. Biden is 81, and former President Donald Trump is 78.

Several independent fact-checkers debunked the video, including NBC News , PolitiFact , USA Today and The Washington Post .

The White House denounced the misleading videos as a “lie” spread by media outlets controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s conservative-leaning media organizations.

And British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was standing near Biden, said afterward that Biden was being polite to the skydivers. “As far as I know he went over to talk to some of the parachute jumpers, saying thank you or hello to them all individually,” he told Britain’s Telegraph .

Still, days later, Google’s search engine recommended at least two misleading versions of the story as “top stories” after a search about Biden and the G7. One version was published by the New York Post, owned by Murdoch’s News Corp., and another by New Delhi Television, a news outlet based in India.

Google defended the company’s search results, telling NBC News in a statement. “For searches related to this news event, our systems across Search and YouTube surface the latest coverage from a diverse range of high-quality sources. Results will change depending on what content is available on a topic.”

Asked for a response to White House criticism, a spokesperson for the New York Post said the publication would speak through its editorials, including one Tuesday about how Biden’s age-related decline is obvious. New Delhi Television did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Users of Elon Musk’s social media app X tried to add context to some versions of the video with X’s “community notes” fact-checking feature after the videos first went viral last Thursday, but most of the misleading posts did not have fact-checks by Monday. One post from the conservative website TrendingPolitics had more than 25 million views as of Tuesday and no community note.

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The misleading videos also got millions of views collectively on TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, as well as thousands of engagements on Instagram. It is not clear how many of those views and engagements occurred after fact-checks were published.

All of those tech platforms have policies against misinformation. Google and YouTube ban manipulated content such as clips taken out of context. X bans “out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm.” TikTok and Meta have established fact-checking programs designed to limit the spread of misinformation.

On TikTok, one video from the Daily Mail, a British tabloid, got more than 3.7 million views. Facebook provided more eyeballs, including more than 23,000 plays on a video from former Fox News host Glenn Beck. YouTube added more than 670,000 views on a video from Sky News Australia. And on Instagram, a video post from Fox News host Sean Hannity had more than 18,800 likes.

Instagram did apply its fact-checking process to some of the videos. It put a label on a post from Fox News host Jesse Watters, warning users: “Missing context. Independent fact-checkers say information in this post could mislead people,” with links to two debunkings. A similar label appears on an Instagram video from the New York Post.

Some debunkings did well on those platforms, too. A fact-checking video from NBC News had 5 million views on TikTok, and a similar Instagram post from NBC News had more than 15,500 likes on Instagram. But people who saw the misleading videos did not necessarily see the fact-checks.

A spokesperson for Fox News, which, like the New York Post and Sky News Australia, is owned by Murdoch’s companies, said its television programs “aired the unedited, wide shot footage of the president in Italy that was serviced directly from the White House pool.” Spokespeople for TikTok and Meta did not have immediate comment. The Daily Mail, Sky News Australia and Glenn Beck’s media company did not immediately respond.

Social media platforms remain a source of news for many Americans. On Facebook, 91% of U.S. users say they see at least some kind of news-related content, according to a survey in March from the Pew Research Center , and the numbers were similar for other apps.

That’s despite concerns about accuracy. A Pew survey from last year found that, among adults who get news on social media, 40% said inaccuracy was the part they dislike the most about it, up from 31% five years earlier.

How much does an online PhD in public health cost?

Doctorate degrees in public health typically cost graduate students anywhere between $17,000 and $53,000 (or between $385 and $875 per credit) depending on the type of university, the school’s residency rules, program length, and other fees, if any.

It is worthwhile to note that many online doctorate degree programs in public health may charge a higher tuition rate for non-state residents, but there are affordable online doctoral programs that charge a flat tuition rate regardless of graduate student state residency.

Doctor in a lab

Can I get an affordable online doctorate degree in public health?

Yes, there are a number of affordable online doctoral programs in public health. A growing number of highly reputable universities provide partially or fully online doctoral programs. Time management is one of the biggest challenges facing doctoral students. Balancing coursework, career, and family demands makes online PhD programs especially attractive.

Earning an online doctorate degree as opposed to a traditional on-campus doctorate degree makes it possible to save money on expenses like housing, transportation, and certain campus fees. However some schools may still charge a technology fee whether attending school online or on campus.

Online PhD programs also make it possible to continue working in your field, which means you can complete your degree program while still earning a living. This can ultimately reduce your dependence on student loan debt.

If affordability is a particular concern, and it is making you reluctant to pursue a public health doctoral program, you may be able to take advantage of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and loans.

For more information on financial aid, check out the Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid website. Note that to qualify for financial aid, the college or university that you attend must be accredited.

Many schools offering PhD degree programs have assistantship opportunities for their doctoral students. Assistantship may give teaching opportunities in exchange for tuition waivers and a stipend. Each school is different, so you will need to check into the online public health doctorate degree program you are interested in.

If a cheap online doctorate degree is important to you, you have options! Check out our other cheap degree rankings .

Bottom Line: Affordable online doctoral programs are possible when you factor in things like in-state tuition, financial aid, grants, and assitantships.

1 Top Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock That Could Start Soaring After July 31

  • Qualcomm stock has pulled back lately, but it could regain its momentum once it reports earnings next week.
  • The recovery in the smartphone market and the growing demand for AI smartphones could help the company deliver better-than-expected results.
  • Qualcomm stock is trading at attractive levels right now.
  • Motley Fool Issues Rare “All In” Buy Alert

NASDAQ: QCOM

Qualcomm Stock Quote

Investors looking to benefit from the growing adoption of AI smartphones should consider buying this chip stock while it is still cheap.

Shares of Qualcomm ( QCOM 2.66% ) have enjoyed healthy gains of over 20% year to date, despite dropping 20% from the 52-week high it hit on June 18.

However, there is a good chance this semiconductor stock could come out of this slump when it releases its fiscal 2024 third-quarter results on July 31. Let's see why that may be the case.

Improving smartphone demand could help Qualcomm post better-than-expected results

Qualcomm released its fiscal 2024 second-quarter results (for the three months ended March 24) on May 1. The company's top line was flat on a year-over-year basis at $9.4 billion. Revenue from the handset business was also flat on a year-over-year basis at $6.2 billion. So, Qualcomm generates nearly two-thirds of its revenue from selling smartphone chips, which means its fortunes are tied to the health of this market.

The smartphone market wasn't in great shape last year as shipments declined 3% on account of poor demand, according to market research firm IDC. However, 2024 is turning out to be a better year. Smartphone sales increased 7.8% in Q1, followed by an increase of 6.5% in Q2.

IDC points out that smartphones equipped with generative artificial intelligence (AI) features are growing faster than expected, and their shipments are expected to hit 234 million units in 2024. Even then, AI smartphones will have a lot of room for growth as they are expected to account for 19% of the overall market this year.

The stronger-than-expected growth in AI smartphone adoption should ideally be a tailwind for Qualcomm as it controlled 23% of the smartphone processor market at the end of 2023. More importantly, Qualcomm management pointed out in the May earnings call that it was witnessing strong adoption of generative AI smartphones in China with premium devices from manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, and Huawei gaining momentum.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi and Vivo's shipments increased substantially last quarter. While Vivo's smartphone shipments jumped 22% year over year, Xiaomi reported 27% year-over-year growth. The strong jump in shipments recorded by these Chinese manufacturers bodes well for Qualcomm as it has been supplying its AI-focused smartphone chips to them.

The company guided for $9.2 billion in revenue for fiscal Q3 when it released its previous results. That would translate into year-over-year growth of 9%. Analysts expect Qualcomm to report $2.25 per share in earnings on revenue of $9.21 billion, which is in line with the company's guidance. However, the strong growth in AI smartphone shipments last quarter could help Qualcomm beat Wall Street's outlook.

More importantly, Qualcomm can sustain a stronger pace of growth in the long run thanks to the rapid adoption of AI smartphones.

The bigger picture appears to be bright

IDC previously forecasted shipments of 170 million AI smartphones this year. However, it has significantly upped its guidance, suggesting that consumers are warming up to this technology faster than expected.

Shipments of generative AI-enabled smartphones could jump from an estimated 234 million units in 2024 to 912 million units in 2028. That translates to an outstanding compound annual growth rate of 78% based on 2023's shipments of 51 million units.

Such growth in the AI smartphone market would support a better-than-expected outlook for Qualcomm in its results next week. As such, there is a good chance this semiconductor stock could resume its upward climb for 2024.

That's why now is a good time to buy shares of Qualcomm. The stock is trading at 26 times trailing earnings, a discount to the Nasdaq 100 index's multiple of 32 (as a proxy for tech stocks ). It may not be available at such an attractive valuation for long.
