TheUniversity of Dayton Business Plan Competition

A special thanks to our sponsors UD National Alumni Association

Overview of today’s presentation • What is a Business Plan competition? • Elevator Pitch • Cameo Round ◄ The new wrinkle! • Finalist round • Prize money ◄ $59k this year! • Key dates • Support

What is a Business Plan Competition? • It’s where you investigate an opportunity for starting a new business • Markets, costs, competition, benefits • You present a 1 minute overview of the opportunity • “back of the cocktail napkin” • Finalists write up their findings in a commonly used format (the business plan has 11 parts)

Ours is a 3-stage competition • Stage 1—Give a one minute speech, write one page of information about your product • Judges select ten semi-finalists, and also identify top ten oral presentations • Stage 2---The ten semi-finalists write up 2-3 pages and talk for five minutes. Judges select five finalists • Stage 3---Five finalists write a full business plan during the winter semester

3 Stage CompetitionPrize Money: $59,000 overall

Plus a chance for even more money! The three highest placing finalist teams will be invited to pitch the Connor Foundation Seed Fund for an additional $50k investment! We also network our finalists to other competitions and potential investors as well

How our competition works— • Three stage competition • Solo or team effort (teams 1-8 in size) • 1st& 2nd stages open to everyone-two entries per person • Finalist round must include current UD students or UD Alumni.

What is an Elevator Pitch? • It is a one minute presentation where you • Present your idea • Cover six general areas In our elevator pitch, Judges don’t ask you questions—you have one full minute to present.

What are the 6 areas of an Elevator Pitch? • Introduction • Problem Statement • Opportunity • Resources Required • Returns to Investor • Tag line and closing

What do the EP judges look for? • Novelty/Cleverness/Usefulness • Quality of Benefits provided • Competitiveness • Growth Potential • Ability to Execute • Quality of presentation

Elevator Pitch Stage:Application process • Application: • Opens 13 September, 2010 • Closes 20 October, 2010 • What we ask you to tell us • Demographic information • 6 areas of elevator pitch • Space limited to roughly one page.

Elevator Pitch & Cameo stages: Key dates • September 13th: Online system opens • October 20th: Application deadline • October 22nd, & 29th: Dress Rehearsals • October 30th: Elevator Pitch • November 20th: Cameo Round • December 3rd : Finalists announced

Final Plan Stage:Process • Finalist teams notified on 3 December, 2010 • Teams are paired with Mentors. • Each team given 15 hours of Mentor time. • Coordinator will conduct training sessions for all teams • Teams prepare Business Plan, presentation slides during the winter semester

Final Stage:Presentation • Each team given 20 minutes to present, plus ten minutes Q & A time • Props, multi-media are acceptable • Break after 3rd presentation • Order of presentations is random, and announced the day of presentations • Full team must be present, but not all team members are required to speak

What do finalist round judges look for? • Quality of the idea • Quality of the written plan • Quality of the oral presentation • Quality of the financial analysis • Quality of the team

Why enter a business plan competition? • Entrepreneurship courses teach three critical items • Spotting opportunities • Planning to seize those opportunities • Executing the plans. • Many people have great ideas, but are scared of parts “B” and “C”– our goal is to make those steps easier and simpler.

Why is this a good resume line? • It’s a competition, so you outperformed others • Spotting opportunities suggests leadership and creativity • Good presentations suggest good communications skills • Business Plans are “big picture”, they demonstrate how you can see the entire picture

Eligibility:Plan parameters • Work must be original. • Plans checked for plagiarism. • Start-ups acceptable up to one year old. • Non-Profits are acceptable, but judged the same as others. • Plans cannot violate Marianist values. • E.g. no payday loans, etc. • Plans must be legal • (e.g. no DVD pirates). • Plans cannot have a liquor license. • Anyone may enter up to two plans, but can only be a finalist once. • Students can’t be serving a university suspension during the competition

Support for entrants • Free individual instruction with the BPC Director • On-line coaching sessions • Optional rehearsals for elevator pitch • Coaching sessions for all finalist teams • Business mentor assigned to each finalist team • Access to market research, planning tools, etc.

What if you don’t have an idea yet? • We’ll help you generate many good ideas • We’ll help facilitate partnerships with people who do have ideas. • We can help you succeed

ud business plan competition

The Grace College Business Plan Competition is a Shark Tank-like event that challenges business students to think like a CEO, innovate like an entrepreneur, and pitch like a salesman for the chance to win up to $10,000 in prize money. All students are invited to participate in the competition, but entrepreneurial management majors are required to participate. Students begin preparing for the competition in the fall, and the college business plan competitors are narrowed down to the top four at the end of the semester.

In the weeks leading up to the competition, the Service Core Of Retired Executives (SCORE) visits the class and helps guide students through the process. When it comes to the final competition, five businessmen and women are brought in as judges to determine a winner based on value proposition, competitive advantage, profitability, and an intangible factor during the competition.

Melissa Chappell who teaches the class and runs the competition said, “The students have an incredible opportunity to develop their idea into a solid business plan that is prepared, studied, refined, and presented for competition. We look forward to what new ideas will be presented each year!”

11:49 a.m., Oct. 18, 2007--Aspiring student entrepreneurs at UD are invited to put their ideas to the test by entering the University of Delaware's 2008 Business Plan Competition.

The competition encourages participants to take an idea from the concept phase to a full business plan and create the opportunity to build a new venture. The competition's first deadline is Saturday, Dec. 1. By then, a one-page business concept, which describes a business idea, must be submitted. Subsequent steps include business plan workshops and submission of fully developed business plans, with awards presented in April.

Created by UD's Lerner College of Business and Economics, the competition is designed to find new venture ideas and build successful businesses, as well as to provide education and networking opportunities for students.

Students from all disciplines and colleges at the University--not just students enrolled in an entrepreneurial or business curriculum--are encouraged to join the competition. Faculty and staff are eligible to compete, too, provided that at least one student is on the business plan team and an active participant.

How we know Quinyon Mitchell already won Eagles CB job − not Isaiah Rodgers or Kelee Ringo

ud business plan competition

PHILADELPHIA − Each day in training camp, the highlight is always the one-on-one competition when rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell goes against either star wide receiver A.J. Brown or DeVonta Smith.

On Tuesday, Mitchell went against Smith. On the first play, Smith went deep down the sideline, Mitchell stayed with him step-for-step, with inside leverage, shielding Smith from trying to catch the ball as it fell incomplete.

Smith looked at Mitchell and said, "Good play, Q."

On the second play, Smith dug his heels on an inside move, then broke to the outside as Mitchell was a step behind, and caught Jalen Hurts' pass as he turned upfield.

Mitchell told Smith, "What a route!" It was the opposite of Mitchell's "that route was trash" talk with Smith and Brown over the course of the summer.

For an NFL cornerback, sometimes the receiver makes a play. And Brown and Smith are two of the best as Brown has had 1,496 and 1,456 yards receiving in each of the last two seasons while Smith has had 1,196 and 1,066 yards.

Oh, why yes, we do have the 🔥 A.J. Brown catch https://t.co/SrKDjHSExa pic.twitter.com/8go4n3ANLu — Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) August 20, 2024

Brown had his moment, too, on Tuesday, when he hauled in a beautifully thrown pass deep down the sideline over Mitchell.

"I mean, it's been good work," Mitchell said about going against Smith and Brown. "Him and A.J. get me ready and get me prepared every day. It's been real exciting. They the best two in the game."

Still, the most significant part of practice Tuesday did not involve Brown or Smith.

In fact, it came on the very first play of team drills. The Eagles lined up in their base defense, and there was Mitchell on the outside opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. This was the first time that Mitchell opened practice on the outside.

Usually, it would be Isaiah Rodgers and sometimes Kelee Ringo. Then Mitchell would come in and play nickel, and occasionally take first-team reps on the outside while getting most of those outside reps with the second team.

On Tuesday, Mitchell was exclusively with the first team, whether it was outside or at nickel.

It certainly points to Mitchell starting there in the regular-season opener Sept. 6 against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.

And it's possible that Mitchell will play every snap on the outside if fellow rookie Cooper DeJean is ready to play nickel after missing the first three weeks of camp with a hamstring injury. If DeJean is not ready, then Mitchell will move inside on passing downs, and either Rodgers or Ringo will play on the outside.

"In a perfect world, (Mitchell) could play corner and corner only, but we got to have a nickel," Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "The nickel is going to be out on the field by today's standards 70-85% of the time. It's an important position, and whatever our best combination is, is what we'll go with."

The Eagles, of course, drafted Mitchell in the first round (No. 21 overall) as an outside corner. He had never played nickel in college at Toledo. Yet not only has Mitchell learned nickel, he is proving to be the best outside cornerback other than Slay.

And as another sign, defensive backs coach Christian Parker was asked if the Eagles would let Mitchell play both outside and nickel during a game.

"That’s something we’ll explore," Parker said. "We’ve explored that in practice reps. Nothing is finite right now. We’ll continue to explore that, but he has certainly showed that he can handle playing multiple positions."

Mitchell, at 6 feet, 193 pounds, has a size advantage over Rodgers, who's 5-10, 173. Ringo, at 6-2, 207, is bigger than Mitchell, but the second-year player isn't as polished as Mitchell or Rodgers.

That's saying a lot for a rookie. Just ask Smith.

"I ran a route on Q last week, and (Saturday) he read it, and he knew what I was running," Smith said. "Shout out to him. I told him that’s a good job of recognizing patterns and things like that, seeing something one time and not letting it get you again.

"So, just being a student of the game. When you get to this level, the talent is gonna always be there, but the smarter you become playing this game, the easier it’s going to get."

Mitchell's play has even impressed Rodgers.

"He's the kind of rookie who shocked me," Rodgers said. "He's a dog outside. He's a dog inside at the nickel spot. So wherever he's at, he's gonna make plays. ... He's a lot (more) advanced than most rookies would be right now."

For Mitchell, another test will come after top players like Brown and Smith make plays on him, or if the Packers' Jayden Reed or Christian Watson were to beat him deep.

That's why Parker said he looks at more than the result of a play with Mitchell.

"We’re more focused on the process, not the results," Parker said. "He can have bad technique and make a play on the ball, and I’m still not going to be very happy, and he shouldn’t be either. So we focus on, was his initial footwork good? Was our eye placement good? Was our leverage sound?

"Sometimes receivers are going to make plays. But at the same time, each one of those plays is a learning experience."
