Band 4+: Cash vs. credit cards: pros, cons, and impact on our spending.

In today’s day and age, credit cards themselves alongside online payment methods play a major role in the daily lives of most people, but while online payment as a means of transaction has only recently originated, Credit Cards have existed since much much before. Here, I shall aim to try and compare them against cash and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each payment methodTo begin with, both cash and credit cards get the job done, and pay the receiver, but what sets both apart is functionality, ease, comfort, and practicality, where the differences arise. In our daily lives, cash plays a fundamental role in most transactions and exchanges of goods and services. Cash is quite useful in most small daily exchanges, is not cumbersome to handle, and requires simple addition and subtraction to do business with it, being most convenient for the average user. But while that is true, to withdraw or get cash, most need to visit ATMs (not counting online payment), where credit cards come into play. Additionally, holding too much cash at any moment gets risky because of the risk of losing your wallet and displacing money. Also, most advocates of credit cards claim it to be just as easy to use as money, slide it in the card machine, enter your PIN, and voila! No need to worry about not having change or cash. After analyzing the pros and cons of both entities, it is clear to say that the debate of credit cards and cash is once again that of momentary convenience, and the needs and desires of an individual user keep changing from time to time. Safe to say, the best path forward is to use both judiciously in their own best way, and what would be even more important is to bring about some radical change, since online payment methods seem to be outdoing both and rising rapidly in most nations around the world, first world and third world.

Sample Answer: Band 8+

In the modern era, obtaining a credit card has become a simple process, granting individuals greater access to funds and enabling them to make purchases with ease. Despite the potential issues that may arise for those unable to repay their debts, I believe the advantages of credit cards significantly outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the primary advantages of credit cards is the convenience they offer. Credit cards enable users to make purchases without carrying large sums of cash, minimizing the risk of theft or loss. Additionally, credit cards allow individuals to make purchases online or in foreign countries, simplifying transactions and increasing accessibility to a wider range of products and services. Furthermore, credit cards provide financial flexibility, as they enable users to cover unexpected expenses and pay off the balance over time, thereby easing potential financial stress.

Another notable advantage of credit cards is the consumer protection they provide. Many credit card companies offer features such as fraud protection, allowing users to dispute unauthorized charges and avoid financial loss. This added security promotes consumer confidence in making transactions, both online and in person. An example is the fraud protection feature provided by Visa. Imagine a situation where a cardholder discovers a fraudulent online transaction. Visa’s fraud protection policy allows this cardholder to dispute the charge, and after a brief investigation, the credit card company confirms the transaction was indeed unauthorized.

In conclusion, while the misuse of credit cards can result in financial difficulties for some individuals, I believe that the advantages of credit cards outweigh the potential drawbacks.

Nowadays plastic money replacements such as credit and debit cards are extremely popular, even more than banknotes and coins. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this.

Advantage/ Disadvantage Essay

Introduction

Sentence 1: Introduce the topic.

Sentence 2: Analyse the advantages and disadvantages in the following portion.

Body Paragraphs

Paragraph 1 – Positive effects of shift to plastic money

Paragraph 2 – Negative effects of shift to plastic money

Summarize the points and mention the opinion.

Credit and debit cards are now extremely popular replacements for cash, outpacing the usage of banknotes and coins. This essay examines both the positive and negative effects of the shift.

Some people believe that using electronic cash is more practical, considering that this method has many advantages. Inevitably , either a credit card or debit card permits consumers to make purchases whenever or wherever they want, regardless of whether or not their wallet is stuffed with cash. Moreover, it is easy for people to carry around in their wallets and money is not at risk of being stolen or lost. Additionally, online banking is much easier than traditional banking. The availability of credit cards makes it easy to make payments, transfer funds, and do shopping online, which supports the growth of e-commerce. Furthermore, paper cash can cause health concerns as it can absorb bacteria from the environment and spread illnesses when some people get their hands on it. Therefore, in this manner, it is both convenient and safe to use plastic money.

However, these plastic cards do have some drawbacks. Fraud is the first concern. Essentially, in the case of a stolen debit or credit card, a thief or hacker can receive information about the card and then clone the bank cards using the stolen data, in turn causing them significant financial loss. As payment cards become increasingly popular, international corporations and governments now have a compelling opportunity to collect your personal details. Additionally, electronic cash transactions may be delayed or cancelled at any minute for an array of reasons, such as internet or system failure. During such times, paper money becomes the only acceptable form of currency.

In conclusion, digital credit and debit cards have merits and shortcomings , just like most other technologies. These cards are of great help, but people should understand that it is not always the case; we need to be careful when using them.
