Every Little Deed Matters

On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. No matter how small a step you are taking to lead a greener lifestyle, it does make a difference. Because, if everyone starts doing little deeds one by one, it will turn into something big. As the saying goes every drop makes an ocean, it is true in this case as well.

As there are a lot of diseases that originate due to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water, we must begin there. For instance, when water remains stagnant or unclean for long, various insects and bacteria start growing there. This results in deadly diseases like Malaria, Dengue and more. So, we must make sure to cover the tanks, pots, coolers and more which may become a breeding ground for such insects and diseases.

Similarly, we have to talk about the issues of garbage disposal. Especially in our country, people litter around everywhere. It is essential to firstly dispose of waste properly and also segregate the wet and dry waste accordingly.

These little deeds will make you realize how wholesome your life will become. It is not always about the money and luxury, the little fulfilling things and change in habits can also prove to be very effective.

Thus, we have the World Environment Day which serves as a reminder to protect the environment at all costs. All the resources of nature from forests to oceans and soil to air, we must conserve.

To sum it up, always remember that the gifts and blessings which nature endows on us are priceless. It is rather essential to conserve them all for a better future and life for all. Always remember that small steps will help you reach your goal.

The UN Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day(WED) in 1972. It was done to create an awareness of the kind of environment we are living in and the need to conserve and preserve it for the present and the future. ‘Only One Earth’ was the slogan for the first celebration of the World Environment Day in 1974, and from then on, the commemoration of the World Environment Day has become a platform to create consciousness on the environmental issues we are facing on a global scale. It also turned out to be a chance for everyone to rethink the ways in which they are exploiting the environment we are a part of.

Environment Day through the Ages

Down the years, the WED has become a pathway to the restoration of the ecosystem which includes the recovery of destroyed ecosystems and preserving the ecosystems that are still in shape. Every year, the WED is hosted by a different country and has a different theme. In the year 2020, the WED was hosted by Columbia and Germany under the theme, ‘Time for Nature’.

As human beings, the environment we exist in plays a very important role in the well-being of every life possible on this Earth, and it is our duty to preserve and keep everything in check. Throughout the years, there have been many movements and awareness campaigns around the world that have been put forth to make people environmentally conscious. Chipko Movement, dated way back to 1970, carried out by rural villagers, particularly women, was directed towards stopping the government from cutting down trees and demolishing forests for various reasons. Van Mahotsav is yet another initiative, an annual tree-planting festival that goes on for a week in the month of July, which was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food. There were also many others like the Save Silent Valley Movement, the Jungle Bachao Andholan, Tehri Dam Movement and so on.

We, at our school, have been following the same path for the past few years. It is necessary that all of us, as inhabitants of this planet, understand the need to be aware of our surroundings and find ways to protect it in every possible way. It is not just enough for us to be aware but also let the others know that we owe a great deal of respect and concern for all that the Earth we live in is providing us with. So here we are today to hold hands in making every little difference we can, together. Protecting the environment and leaving a thriving planet to future generations is in your hands – literally.  

You might think these goals are too huge or too complicated for you to solve on your own, but on this World Environment Day, you can make an easy personal commitment to Beat Plastic Pollution and stop using single-use plastic. 

You may not know what single-use plastic is, but you likely used it recently when you drank bottled water or soda, used a straw, carried vegetables from the market in a bag, or stirred your coffee.   

In fact, single-use plastic is used so widely that a massive island of plastic 3 times the size of France is currently floating between California and Hawaii, and a plastic bag was recently found at a depth of 36,000 feet inside the Mariana Trench.  

And it gets worse: 83% of our tap water contains its particles, and its toxic chemicals can be found in our bloodstream.

With 1 million plastic drinking bottles purchased every minute and up to 5 trillion disposable plastic bags used every year, plastic pollution is threatening our ecosystems, biodiversity, and our health, at a pace and scale never seen before.   

Join the global movement and make a personal commitment to “refuse what you can’t reuse.”

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world. Designation of this Day

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

These harmful substances, known as pollutants, have become a significant existential threat to all living beings on Earth. Today, every nation, region, and community grapples with the challenges posed by pollution, a problem primarily driven by human activities that have been degrading our natural environment for centuries.

From burning fossil fuels to deforestation, nearly every self-serving human activity contributes to environmental pollution. The cars we drive, the plastic products we use, the clothes we wear, and the waste we generate—all these actions play a role in polluting our planet. In response to this escalating crisis, various governmental and international organizations have been established to address pollution and mitigate its impacts. One notable entity is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which tackles pollution, its causes, and its consequences on a global scale.

‘Hello and welcome to all my mates and teachers. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on pollution. There is a lot about pollution in our Geography books. From the causes of pollution to its preventive measures. But have we ever followed any of these preventive measures? 

There are different types of pollution, such as air, soil, water, radioactivity, noise, etc. All these pollutions have different sources, which not only disturb the natural environment but also have adverse effects on human health, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the climate. 

Pollution is a fight that requires a collective effort from developed and developing countries. Recently, there was a debate where the first world countries were requesting others to equally take responsibility for environmental pollution. However, this is not the case, because the major damage to the environment is caused by developmental activities in these first-world countries. 

The damage is already down, and now is not the try to cry over spilled milk. We are in this together, and we have to take responsibility for our actions. With well-structured, alternative strategies and cooperation, we can combat pollution.

‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. As a conscious human being, I am happy to present my speech on pollution. Pollution is known as the introduction of unwanted substances into the environment, which disrupts the natural environment and overall health of the planet. One of the major concerns of the pollution is climate change. 

The history of pollution is older than one century. In 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius first predicted the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which may substantially increase the surface temperature and because a major cause of global warming. 

The first international summit to consider pollution as a global concern was the 1972 Stockholm Convention. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was the outcome of this international climate convention. UNEP deals with all environmental problems at the global level and organizes various environmental programs to raise awareness about pollution, climate change, global warming, etc.

Today, our terrestrial and marine ecosystems are facing existential threats due to pollution. Deforestation, industrial waste, and chemical pollutants are wreaking havoc on biodiversity. The loss of habitats, the decline of species, and the imbalance in our ecosystems paint a grim picture of the toll pollution takes on our natural world.

There are different types of pollution, such as air, water, noise, soil, radioactivity, thermal, plastic, etc. Burning of fossil fuels, industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and agricultural activities causes air pollution. Industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, untreated sewage, oil spills, and dumping of chemicals in rivers, ponds and lakes cause water pollution. Improper disposal of industrial waste, agricultural practices, use of pesticides and fertilizers, and contamination from hazardous substances cause soil pollution. The list goes on as new types of pollution are being discovered by scientists. 

Pollution not only affects our environment but also disrupts our daily life as it affects our health, and biodiversity and is a major cause of climate change. Every country and its citizens must recognize the importance of addressing pollution through regulations, sustainable alternative practices, and environmental conservation efforts.

In 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius first predicted the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which may substantially increase the surface temperature and because a major cause of global warming.  The first international summit to consider pollution as a global concern was the 1972 Stockholm Convention. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was the outcome of this international climate convention.

Our land. Our future.

All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point.

According to the  UN Convention to Combat Desertification , up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of  droughts  has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

Land restoration is a key pillar of the  UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration  (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the  Sustainable Development Goals .

This is why  World Environment Day  2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from 2 to 13 December 2024.

UNEP has published a practical guide outlining some of the collective, transformative actions that governments, cities, businesses, organizations and individuals can take to protect and restore our planet.

What is World Environment Day?

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2024, it is hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

A moment of truth for climate action

As climate records are shattered, and emissions continue to rise, the UN Secretary-General will set out some hard-hitting truths about the state of the climate, the grotesque risks leaders are taking, and what companies and countries – particularly the G7 and the G20 – need to do over the next eighteen months to salvage humanity’s chances of a livable future.

World Environment Day

Today, on June 5th, we celebrate World Environment Day. It is the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

Message on world environment day, 5 june 2023.

This World Environment Day is a call to beat plastic pollution.

Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide – one third of which is used just once.

Every day, the equivalent of over 2000 garbage trucks full of plastic is dumped into our oceans, rivers, and lakes.

The consequences are catastrophic.

Microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.

Plastic is made from fossil fuels – the more plastic we produce, the more fossil fuel we burn, and the worse we make the climate crisis.

But we have solutions.

Last year, the global community began negotiating a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.

This is a promising first step, but we need all hands-on deck.

A new report by the UN Environment Programme shows that we can reduce plastic pollution by 80 per cent by 2040 – if we act now to reuse, recycle, reorient, and diversify away from plastics.

We must work as one – governments, companies, and consumers alike – to break our addiction to plastics, champion zero waste, and build a truly circular economy.

Together, let us shape a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.

World Environment Day: turning point in our race to restoration

Your excellencies, distinguished guests, friends,

It is wonderful to be here in Riyadh.

On 5th June, five weeks from now, we will mark World Environment Day , which is graciously being hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Hundreds of millions of people will engage in this milestone moment for environmental action. 

Since 1973, World Environment Day led by the UN Environment Programme has helped to drive action on some of the planet’s most-pressing environmental problems.

This year, World Environment Day will direct the world’s gaze to three perilous, though often-overlooked, challenges: land degradation, desertification and drought.

One-fifth of earth’s land is now degraded. Our lakes are shrivelling up. Our forests are disappearing. Our farms are turning into dustbowls.

This degradation affects the well-being of more than 3 billion people – and the problem is only expected to get worse.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration – which is proudly supporting World Environment Day – is helping to counter this crisis.

Launched in 2021, the Decade is a global effort to prevent and reverse the damage humanity has done to the natural world.

Three years in, countries have pledged to revive 1 billion hectares of land , an area four times the size of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

That number is encouraging but it is just a start.

We need to restore at least 1.5 billion hectares by 2030 if we are going to safeguard the web of life on Earth and avoid real consequences for ourselves, like food shortages.

I hope this World Environment Day can be a turning point in our race to restoration.

Now is the time to move from committing to action to acting on commitments to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation

Friends, I take this opportunity to acknowledge the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is only the second country in West Asia to host World Environment Day.

This nation has shown leadership in addressing drought, desertification and land degradation internationally.

The Kingdom is the driving force behind the Group of 20 Global Land Initiative , an ambitious effort to reduce degraded land by 50 per cent by 2040.

The country is leading the Middle East Green Initiative, a USD 2.5 billion push to counter climate change by bolstering regional cooperation and financing green infrastructure.

And at home, the Kingdom is pioneering initiatives using nature-based solutions to reduce emissions, and restore and preserve its land and sea.

We at UNEP welcome our strong partnership with the Kingdom, and in particular our collaboration with the Kingdom’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture as it implements the country’s National Environment Strategy.

This comprehensive framework is a key part of the Saudi Transformation Program and the country’s Vision 2030.World Environment Day comes ahead of the 16 th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which will be hosted here in Riyadh, in December.

This is expected to be the largest-ever UN conference on land degradation and drought. This is an important opportunity to galvanize global efforts to address these critical issues because time is running short.

We are the first generation to now fully understand the immense threats to the land – and might be the last one with a chance to reverse the course of destruction.

Our priority now must be on restoring ecosystems – on replanting our forests, on rewetting our marshes, on reviving our soils.

Restoration can create havens for wildlife, helping to foil the extinction crisis gripping our planet.

It can counter climate change by reviving the ability of forests and rivers to store planet-warming carbon.

It can create buffers around communities, protecting them from climate-related disasters, which are becoming more common by the year.

Restoration can also be a boon for economies: every dollar invested in reviving degraded lands brings up to 30 US dollars in economic returns.

But for restoration to be successful, we need everyone onboard.

Governments, businesses, scientists, faith-based organizations, civil society and individuals all must join forces.

Friends, in 1992, the world came together in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to adopt three landmark conventions covering climate change, biodiversity and desertification.

These accords should serve as our North Star on the road to restoration. But we cannot stop the climate crisis today, biodiversity loss tomorrow, and land degradation the day after.

We need to tackle all these issues together – and acknowledge that healthy land is crucial for realizing the Sustainable Development Goals, which come due in six short years. How do we manage land more sustainability so that we build resilience and address poverty? How do we truly acknowledge the value of biodiversity in our economic systems? How do we build sustainability into the heart of decision-making? And how countries deliver on restoration commitments made?

The good news is, we have the solutions, the means and, with the UN Restoration Decade, the platform to restore our lands to their former glory.

We now need a global resolve to live up to our restoration commitments.

This World Environment Day is a golden opportunity to spur hundreds of millions of people to take action.

We are the generation that can make peace with land.

So let us undo the damage we have done, let us give our children and our children’s children a chance at a better future.
